I’m going to have to be brief. The magazine is again bursting with original local content, for which I must thank our contributors and the continued interest of so many local clubs, societies and organisations. Busy Betty continues her mission to highlight areas for improvement around our community. If you feel that a long-standing problem with litter, graffiti or anti social behaviour could benefit from exposure please let her know by contacting us. Our Olympians, and their supporters, have done us proud. Many of you will have attended celebrations at Millennium Square. If you that haven’t yet managed to get a glimpse of a gold postbox, Pudsey Pacers kindly posed for our cover shot. Hats off to the three of them that ran all the way to Horsforth in the rain! Our Paralympians now prepare to do battle so let’s get behind them too. Don’t forget to look at this month’s ‘Diary Dates’ in Covered. Local organisations value the support of all the community and we’re sure to be at some of the events. You might even get ‘Spotted!’ by the Covered snapper and be in with a chance of winning £25 - see the centre pages. X-factor is back! And this year you may well spot some local talent as girl-band VOXE featuring Calverley local Sophie Wysoczanski are already making a big impression. More on that in this edition. For me, X-factor heralds the countdown to Christmas. Enjoy the last throes of summer - where did it go? Chris Barnham Editor

Six times prize winners of ‘Leeds Gardens in Bloom’ are holding an open garden fundraising event on Sunday 2 September. As well as the opportunity to enjoy cream tea in this award-winning garden there will be a variety of stalls including tombola, cakes, books, plants, raffle and much more.

It has been the school holidays and like many parents I’ve spent a lot of time in our local parks. We’re spoilt for choice in our area for parks and playgrounds – and believe me I’ve visited them all – along with lots of you.

If you’re a budding gardener and looking for inspiration or perhaps need a bit of motivation to get your own backyard in order, why not go along and look through the photographs of how the garden developed from an overgrown field to its current splendour?

Litter is frequently seen in lots of our parks despite the number of bins. Leeds Council do collect some litter but it costs thousands of pounds a year for them to do so – imagine how that money could be better spent!

All the money raised on the day will be donated to Leeds Mind and help the support and awareness of mental health in Leeds. The event will be held at Longfield House, HalfMile Lane, Bramley LS13 1DA from 11am-4pm. Entry is £2.

It’s also been a shame to see that lots of the soft matting on the ground of our play areas has been deliberately damaged. I presume this is thanks to ‘big kids’. These mats are designed to serve a purpose, they’re expensive to replace and look ugly with great big chunks missing. Pudsey Park seems to suffer from this problem more than most. The problem is highlighted in Pudsey by the use of coloured matting which when repaired is usually filled in with a black patch. Unfortunately I don’t see how we overcome this problem. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

On a positive note, top marks to Pudsey Park where there are not only beautiful, well maintained flower displays, but picnic tables and a small pets corner. And what a great idea to paint some white race lines on the grass! I have seen so many people – young and old - enjoying racing each other. Every park should have a race track! More please LCC! Finally, thanks to all those that have pointed out that the seating area in Farsley now has flowers topping its bins. I have to admit the splash of flowers has improved this little patch of land but still... there is still room for improvement.

Leeds Doll & Teddy Fair – Britain’s Oldest

Covered Magazine Local Matters

Britain’s oldest doll and teddy bear fair recently changed hands Pudsey Civic Hall has been a very popular venue for all manner of collectors’ fairs over the years. Transport memorabilia, books, militaria, stamps/ coins/postcards, model railways, doll’s houses and miniatures and, until recently, mainstream antiques and collectibles.

Some modern dolls have become alarmingly realistic – this offered by Ellies Babies

Despite the never failing interest in dolls and teddy bears, the country’s oldest dedicated fair, now 31 years old, had lost interest and impetus. New organiser Debbie Woodhouse (Birmingham) was understandably anxious about her first at the venue. Not that she had stage fright – Debbie is herself a regular exhibitor at antiques fairs and has been running a similar fair at Birmingham National Motorcycle Museum for the past 18 years. On the day With Debbie’s established contacts and followers among the trade and public, it is hardly surprising that the fair went very well on the day – Saturday 7 April. Already with a waiting list, the number of exhibitors was more than doubled to 87. The number of visitors was better than quadrupled to over 600.

Pudsey Comedy Club Pudsey Comedy Club was the brainchild of Mick Broadbent, of Fulneck Golf Club, and stand-up comedian Sam Brady from Warrington. Mick and wife Mandy are great fans of live comedy and, after seeing Sam on stage, tentatively booked him for a one-off show in April last year. Sam’s performance proved so popular that Mick followed to his suggestion that they should start a monthly comedy club – August and December being exceptions due to the Edinburgh Festival and the club’s other seasonal demands. The formula proved so successful that Sam went on to form Cracked Up Comedy, a touring company that provides comedy nights throughout Midlands and the North.

purchases before reaching the checkout. Hilarious. A quality act followed by three more – all from the North, though, more often than not, the club has overseas stars too.

July’s show was as successful as ever. First up was Scott Bennett from Pontefract, or Ponte Carlo as he preferred to call it. Scott treated the audience to his incisive takes on, among other things, Yorkshiremen in a fixed price carvery, the bizarre selection of endof-aisle goods in cut-price supermarkets and the compulsion of some shoppers to start eating their

With Sam Brady at the helm, the next Pudsey Comedy Club is from 8.30 on Thursday 13 September. Daliso Chaponda from Malawi is the headline act, of four. Daliso has recently returned from filming a TV comedy special in Johannesburg. Not to be missed – anyone who can make a South African audience laugh…

Organiser Debbie Woodhouse with some of her own display at Pudsey Civic Hall

Trade early entry is £10 from 8.30, public £3.50 from 10.30, school age 50p. Next fair Saturday 6 October. Debbie Woodhouse 01530 274377, 07973 760881 and dollandteddyfair.co.uk

QUALITY SOFA, CHAIR & BED SHOWROOM

2 St Andrews Close, Rodley LS13 1JE Pudsey Tea Party There’s nothing quite like a good cuppa. It’s even better when shared with a slice of cake and some friends whilst attending a fundraising charity event in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. The residents of Pudsey did just that as they flocked to Pudsey Parish Church earlier this month for a ‘Blooming Great Tea Party’. The party was arranged by the Pudsey and District Fundraising Group for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The group currently has 6 volunteers, and the aim is to raise vital funds for the charity by organising a range of activities from local street and shop collections to tea parties and sponsored events.

Unit 54 Upholstery is celebrating 30 years in business in 2013, to this end we have opened our sister showroom THE GABLES showcasing our hand made sofas and chairs. If you are looking for quality please call in and view our suites, also on show the new classic range of beds from Silent Night.

The Tea Party raised just over £330, with 20% of this being donated back to Pudsey Parish Church Raindrop fund, which is raising money for essential roof and rainwater service repairs. The remaining amount will go straight to help the Marie Curie Nurses in our community, and every pound raised is vital in supporting these nurses in the valuable work they do. As well as cake stalls, there was an array of stalls selling crafts, books and jewellery. For those who were keen to work off the cake there was also the opportunity to try out Zumba with local Zumba instructor Dayne leading the way. Event Organiser Victoria Pawson said: ‘We would like to thank all the members of Pudsey Parish church who helped to make the event a huge success as well as everyone who attended’. New Bramley in Bloom Group – Get Involved! Bramley residents have recently joined forces to brighten up the streets and public areas of their village with flowers and plants. Bramley in Bloom is gearing up to get local people working together and is looking for new members and ideas for improvements that could be made. The group are supported by Moorside Tenants and Residents Association who also run a gardening club at their community centre in Bramley. Chair of Bramley in Bloom, Julie Botham said “We are really excited to get local people together to improve areas all across Bramley. We already have a healthy number of people involved in the group and we met for the first time only last month. We would really welcome any other local residents who would like to be involved.”

Covered Magazine 15 Local Matters

The group’s first project will be to plant bulbs in new areas and tidy some existing planting areas around the village. The next meeting will be at 7pm on 12th September at Moorside Community Centre, St Catherine’s Drive LS13 2JX. Everyone welcome. BramleyinBloom@hotmail.co.uk

Calverley’s “Crop Idol” is Crowned

BBC’s The One Show Speak Out with the at Bidders Auction White Rose Ladies Room, Guiseley Speakers Club Researching and reporting the less well known world of police auctions, BBC’s The One Show (weekdays 7pm) paid visits to Bradford Police and then Bidders in Guiseley. In Bradford the team heard that only a small percentage of recovered property was returned to the rightful owners – mainly because the amount of time and effort spent on relatively low value items would be disproportionate. At Guiseley, the reporter (pictured) interviewed Bidders co-director Mark Huckerby. Bidders holds the contract for auctioning goods recovered or seized by West Yorkshire Police and is therefore well placed to comment on the final destination of seized and recovered goods. The piece is due to be broadcast in mid September.

The ladies meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 7.45pm at Farsley Library. To find out more visit www.the-asc.org.uk/ clubs/whiterose

70 UPPERMOOR, PUDSEY. LS28 7EX

Twenty six entries to the festival were received, and a map of scarecrow locations was provided for people to follow. In addition, there was a guest appearance by “Bob” (a cardboard cartoon cut-out of man wearing only a fig leaf). Bob became a popular pastime throughout the festival, as no one quite knew where and indeed when Bob would pop up.

Local photographer, Karl Birrane, who kindly provided our photos said: ‘The event was a great opportunity for the village to come together. In times when the news is nothing but doom and gloom it is nice that we can overcome it as a community with creative projects such as this’.

Build up your speaking confidence with the support and encouragement of friendly, enthusiastic people at The White Rose Ladies Speakers Club. Based in Farsley, this is the only all-female club in the Yorkshire region. The Club’s vision is to give women, regardless of age or background, the opportunity to learn and develop their speaking skills in a relaxed, friendly environment.

THE MARSH

Over the weekend of the 11th and 12th August hundreds of people visited Calverley for the village’s first scarecrow festival. This year, the four themes were Royalty, Olympics, Traditional and Creative.

Votes for Calverley’s Crop Idol were made by the public and the winner of the competition was “All Was Quiet In The Deep Dark Wood”, featuring kids’ favourite scary beast, The Gruffalo. Other entries included tributes to British Olympians Linford Christie, Bradley Wiggins and Rebecca Addlington.

Are you tongue tied and nervous at interviews? Do avoid any situation where you might be asked to speak in public?

Creative Calverley Founder Gael Timbers said “We were absolutely delighted with the response we have received to this event. So much work and effort has been put into the scarecrow entries by the “crow makers”. We have also had the added bonus of people wandering around Calverley with smiles on their faces - that is what we wanted to achieve”.

It has been an incredible summer for our country and I for one have been glued to the screen cheering on our athletes in the Olympics. From the extraordinary Opening Ceremony to Mo Farah’s nail biting victory in the 5000m, London 2012 has showcased the best of Britain to the whole world and I think it fair to say that it has been a complete success. Critics have been proved wrong and the whole country has come together in celebrating the athletes who have done us all proud. More medals were won this year by Team GB than in any Olympic year since 1908, including 29 golds, with many world records set in the process. Yorkshire has shone through with athletes from across the region winning medals and it was particularly great to cheer on Leeds born Nicola Adams, Lizzie Armistead and all of our athletes from the city. The homecoming celebration in Millennium Square was a real highlight for me and I was so proud to see a post box painted gold in our own constituency in Horsforth to mark the achievements of the Brownlee brothers. People from across the country have been involved from the start, from Olympic Torchbearers to Games Makers in London and the volunteers have drawn praise from around the world. We have more excitement to come with the Paralympics and I hope everyone in Pudsey and Aireborough will join me in supporting our own Paralympian and Rawdon resident, gold medallist David Stone, when he competes to hold his title at road cycling, along with all of the athletes from Leeds.

New Bramley Cycling and Youth Clubs Children that have been inspired by our talented Team GB cycling team are invited to attend a new cycling and youth club on Saturday afternoons at Moorside TARA Community Centre, Bramley. The group will meet at 10am – 12 noon and will be open to children from 5 to 11 years old. Children under 5 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent

Cllr Joe Marjoram Hello again,

Local Matters

I hope that many of you have been able to enjoy a holiday, whether at home or away over the past month. For those at home (like us) the Olympics provided a wonderful spectacle and perhaps like me, you went to the Millennium Square homecoming. I was very impressed that the athletes from this city, many already in training for their next competitions, took time to meet the public. I’m sure you’d agree they did us proud. Closer to home some good news for residents of Dawsons Corner and users of New Pudsey Station. An improvement scheme will now finally go ahead, including over 170 additional parking spaces and changes to the building and road network. We’ve been pushing for this for some time and although there will be some disruption during the building work it really will be worth waiting for. Also, in Farsley, Cllrs Carter and myself opposed the application for a small supermarket at Sunny Bank Mills on Town Street. This required the cutting back of woodland nearby to create parking spaces. The application has now been withdrawn. We’ll let you know if it comes back but it’s certainly good news for now.

Covered’s Guide To... Extending Your Home Here at Covered we are always keen to learn new things. And what kind of a community magazine would we be if we didn’t share our knowledge with our readers? So in the first of our new series, let us guide you through the process of extending your home. Firstly, think about what you hope to achieve from your extension. Look at the extensions other people in your area have built recently, especially on homes of a similar style and age to yours to get not only inspiration but to learn from their experiences Secondly, think about employing an architect. Architects train for a minimum of seven years to qualify – so you’ll be in safe hands! Architects provide much more than just a set of drawings they’ll guide you through the planning and building process and bring value for money, peace of mind and imagination to your project. Some extensions are allowed under Permitted Development, others will require Planning Permission which involves submitting your proposals to the council. You will also need to apply to the council for Building Regulations Approval. Ask friends and neighbours to recommend a builder. Your builder should be someone with the right skills and experience, a great reputation and the proper qualifications where necessary.

Enjoy the rest of Summer and do get in touch if you need us,

Finally, be prepared for mess! Dust gets everywhere during a build! Accept that this is unfortunately just a necessary part of the process and it will all be worth it in the end!

Pudsey Civic Society Dedicated to Sunny Bank Mills Sunny Bank Mills, at the bottom of Farsley Town Street, started life in 1829 as Farsley Club Mill when local clothiers combined resources and bought a little over one acre of land on an existing farming and mill site. Successfully trading as a collective, Robert Ross & Co, they added more land, buildings and machinery. The concern was sold to Edwin Woodhouse in 1882 for £9540. Investing a further £17000, he bought adjacent land and had significantly expanded the business by 1884. In 1895 he sold a small interest in the business for £57967. He sold his controlling interest in 1912 which was, in turn, sold on in 1917 to one Billy Gaunt – grandson of one of the mills’ original trustees and already very successful in the Bradford textiles industry. Billy Gaunt’s immense and diverse business portfolio extended to include theatres, car sales and marine insurance. It collapsed in the wake of the Wall Street Crash and in 1929, to avoid bankruptcy, he was forced to relinquish control of Sunny Bank Mills until his debts were paid off. Billy died in 1942, just as light was appearing at the end of the tunnel.

Billy’s son Alfred returned from India, where he had been serving as a Royal Artillery gunner. A quick reshuffle of Billy’s estate, including the sale of other assets, left Alfred debt-free and in 1943 returned control of Sunny Bank Mills back to the Gaunts. The mills prospered, apart from a period in the 1970s, when the entire Yorkshire cloth industry was hit for a while by recession, large retailers forcing down prices and extremely strong competition from overseas – in those days Italy. Then there was another dip in 1990, at the time around the Gulf

Childrens Centre Trip to Skelton Grange The summer holidays can often feel like a long time for parents as they try to keep little ones entertained and out of trouble. Thankfully Farsley / Calverley Childrens Centre has hosted several events and day trips to offer parents a chance to get out, meet other families and have fun. Due to the popularity of the centre’s events (and the huge catchment area), demand has been high, especially for the extremely popular day-out to the environmental centre Skelton Grange. Skelton Grange is a nature reserve, on the outskirts of Leeds, which is managed for wildlife. It offers children, and adults alike, the opportunity to learn about nature through play, exploration and discovery. Activities on the day included pond-dipping and searching for mini-beasts (which isn’t as scary as it may sound – these mini-beasts largely consisted of centipedes and slugs!). Children also made jewellery from the natural ‘treasures’ they found in the woodland and decorated their own nature postcards. For many, the highlight of the day was den-building. Whilst the kids ran free, many of the adults indulged their fantasies of being the next Bear Grylls making elaborate shelters from tarpaulin and rope. Thankfully there was not a cloud in the sky or a whisper of wind for these shelters to be put to any kind of test! One local Dad commented: ‘It’s been a fantastic. The kids have really enjoyed themselves. Thanks to everyone at the Childrens Centre for arranging such a great trip’. This year Skelton Grange celebrates its 20th anniversary For more information visit http://www.tcv.org.uk/skeltongrange and will hold an open day on Saturday 8 September.

I loved every minute of the olympics. It gave me such a good feeling. It was a perfect demonstration of how amazing it is to achieve something you have worked so hard for. You could palpably feel the emotion of the athletes who won. The elation, the relief and the disbelief that they had done it, that their hard work had after all been worthwhile. So what do you want to achieve? Losing weight, running a marathon, getting a job? Whatever it is, when you finally succeed you will have the same fantastic feeling of elation as the athletes who won a medal. But remember the amount of effort put in is equal to the reward. I found that out when I climbed Everest. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, but the incredible feeling of achievement I got will be with me forever. Personal achievement gives you a feeling that never goes away, it’s amazing and you can have it too. But you can’t buy it, you have to make it happen. So whatever it is you want to achieve take the first step today. Stop thinking about doing it and just do it!

Take A Trek With Susan In 2004 Susan Harper Todd became the first British woman to be leader of an Everest Expedition and only the Fifth British woman in history to stand on the summit of Mount Everest. Covered reader, Richard Clarke, joined Susan’s last adventure and he told us “ In summer 2011, whilst waiting for a friend in a north Leeds bar, I read an article in Covered magazine regarding the trek to basecamp. Months, telephone calls and a few face to face meetings later I was ready to go in Spring 2012. This was out of my normal day to day life but I am so delighted that I did it, this adventure is an amazing and rewarding experience that awakens all of your senses. The planning and logistics were far better than on a package holiday.” An Everest Base Camp Trek is planned this autumn and Susan Is looking for recruits. The trek is suitable for reasonably fit walkers who are able to walk for on average 4-5 hours in a day. The Trek

Golden Brownlee Post Box

Alistair Brownlee ran out as the comfortable winner ahead of his younger brother Jonny who claimed bronze despite suffering a penalty during the race. The Brownlees later enjoyed a helicopter entrance back into Leeds for a homecoming party and Alistair now has his own golden post box! However, it all could have been so different however. Alistair suffered an Achilles tendon tear in February and had to miss several of the world triathlon events through injury in the early stages of the year. In his absence, younger brother Jonny became took the reigns, winning in Madrid and San Diego before Alistair returned to win at Kitzbuehel, Germany. That was his first elite race since injury, less than two months before the Olympic final in London which saw the brothers finishing 1st and 2nd in Germany and collecting Gold and Bronze in Hyde Park, London. The golden post-box will be something which Horsforth can be extremely proud about, after all only gold medal winning towns have the privilege!

Pudsey Looking For Strong End to Season Pudsey St Lawrence has suffered a dropdown the ladder following a run of defeats which has seen them down to 5th position in the Bradford Cricket League Division 1. Despite losing three consecutive matches to Bradford and Bingley, Hanging Heaton and Woodlands respectively, the team had clocked up a lot of runs - normally enough to win matches earlier in the season. Captain Mark Robertshaw (pictured) has again been in action, hitting 83 in a comprehensive win over Undercliffe and 101 in the defeat to Bradford and Bingley who bowled out St Lawrence for 264. James Smith and Chris Marsden have also been in fine batting form, Smith hitting 81 against Woodlands and 78 against Bradford while Marsden clocked up a superb 150 runs as Pudsey slipped to a four wicket defeat.

up the table, and with the batsmen in fine form, who’s to say they won’t get some heavy victories which could give them a high number of points.

St Lawrence are still to face lowly Pudsey Congs, Saltaire and bottom of the league Undercliffe in their final few fixtures and will be looking to captain Mark Robertshaw to rack up the runs in flowing fashion once again. The side also face extremely tricky trips to 3rd placed Lightcliffe and Pudsey have just six matches left of the 2012 season East Beirley on the final day of the season, a side and will be hoping to end on a high and climb back who currently sit pretty in 2nd position.

Parsley’s Farsley Ready to Roll Farsley AFC began their pre-season by hosting the local force of Leeds United at Throstle Nest and despite defeats to Leeds and Halifax they bounced back exceptionally by beating Blue Square North high-flyers Guiseley. New striker Adam Priestley looks to have brought his goal scoring form with him from Garforth where he banged in more than 30 goals last season.

troops will be determined to finish top of the pile this time around. Key games on the calendar for Farsley will be the December months where the face a host of nearby sides in a row, starting with Garforth on Boxing Day and Ossett Albion on the 29th, both at Farsley’s Throstle Nest. Farsley will also be hoping to go one step further in the annual West Riding County Cup, where they were knocked out at the semi-final stage to eventually winners Guiseley AFC.
