Welcome to another packed edition of Covered – the magazine with commitment to the community. We’ve a slightly new look for you this month – nothing too drastic but we hope you find the changes positive. We’ve planned a number of changes to your favourite local mag over the coming months, including a larger format and expansion into new areas. We’ll keep you posted. This month we report on the neglect of Pudsey Cemetery’s Twin Chapels – listed as one of the ten most endangered buildings in Britain by the Victorian Society. Whilst Leeds City Council wait for private or charitable investment the decay looks set to continue. Surely measures could be taken in the meantime? The Covered snapper visited Rodley Beer & Music Festival – if you were there then check out our Spotted! pages, you could be in the money! Autumn is well and truly making its presence known and with winter just around the corner we’ll be turning our focus to Christmas soon. If you’ve got plans then let us know about them. Likewise for Halloween and Bonfire night. We support local groups, clubs and societies with free editorial and plugs for events so get your event Covered by contacting me on: 0113 274 5639.

Busy Betty
The views of Busy Betty are not necessarily those of the publisher.
It has been a funny old summer, blisteringly hot one minute, bitter cold the next. And with all this rain I’ve been mainly keeping busy running in and out to the washing line: Clothes out, clothes in (and repeat until exhausted...)
This month I’ve been out and about in Farsley. As well as wondering just how long the orange safety barriers will remain outside Deeva Restaurant (we must now be into the third week) I have been admiring the beautiful new signage and railings at Sunny Bank Mills. I believe it is the intention that part of the logo will corrode and turn a lovely rusty red. It is great to see these beautiful Mills being lovingly restored and brought back to life. Unfortunately, I’ve also spotted some rather less beautiful sights – litter. This pic (see right) was taken at a spot that is a popular corner for teens to ‘hang out’ (or whatever the kids call it these days!). I wondered which the bigger problem to be addressed was; that kids have nowhere to go or nowhere to put their rubbish? We were all young once, and we’ve done the hanging round on street corner thing – yes even Busy Betty – but this particular corner is badly lit and it can be daunting walking past a large group, particularly after dark. I’d love to hear if any of you have any suggestions of things these kids can do – besides litter picking?! Finally, I hear a rumour that work is to finally go ahead on the steps up from Town Street between the old bank and Wilsons Solicitors. This is great news, all we need now a new business to move into what was the old bank. I’d love to hear what you think. Love Betty

Happy First Anniversary Creative Calverley! Creative Calverley celebrated their first birthday in September. It is hard to believe that the organisation has established so much for the community in such a small amount of time. Calverley Community Cinema, Local Produce / Vintage Fairs, Advent Windows Trail are just a few of the “projects” that Creative Calverley have brought to the village. As if that was not enough, workshops are regularly scheduled throughout the year for people to learn new skills and often include a talented Calverley resident passing on their knowledge to other people. All Creative Calverley events are run by volunteers who have donated their time to help to build a ‘better sense of community’. “We are definitely ‘something rather special’ ” stated Gael Timbers, Founder of the organisation. “We have had people from different parts of Leeds / Bradford and even London visit, interested in what we do. We also work in collaboration with established organisations in the village to bring different activities which can benefit their organisations as well. Every single penny we receive as part of our events / workshops is ploughed back in to the community”. For further information visit www.creativecalverley.co.uk

September has been a month of change for many in Westminster, myself included. Over the summer recess I was honoured to be asked to take the role of Private Parliamentary Secretary to the Rt Hon Francis Maude MP, the Cabinet Office Minister. This is a real privilege and I hope my knowledge of the charity sector will stand me in good stead in this position. The reshuffle has brought new faces into the Cabinet and I look forward to seeing my colleagues rise to the challenge of their roles. In addition to taking up my new duties this month, I have also had the honour of presenting my own Private Members Bill to Parliament, the Prisons (Property) Bill. This will close the current loophole allowing prisoners to reclaim illegally obtained property when they leave prison. When prisoners are found with an item which has been smuggled into prison they can request that this is stored for them until their release, forcing the Prison Service to cover the cost of storing these items, including mobile phones. The Prisons (Property) Bill creates a power for the governor or director of a prison to destroy or otherwise dispose of (including by way of sale) unauthorised property found in prisons. I am pleased to be bringing in a Bill which will stop this ridiculous practice.

Acoustic Night at Coopers, Farsley Cooper's Coffee Shop, in Farsley, opened their doors for another popular evening of live music on 5 September. This month the music ranged from quiet chill-out music to louder ‘listen-up’ performances from numerous artists, both local and from further afield. Drinks, cake and paella were available for the cost of a small donation. The next evening of music is scheduled for Wednesday 7th November, 8pm. Organisers ‘The Oak Church’ promise an enjoyable evening of live music, coffee, cakes, pizza and great company! Calverley Residents Group If you have lived in Calverley for a number of years you may be familiar with Calverley Residents Action Group "CRAG". The action group formed in 1975 to prevent a road from being built through Calverley Woods and was very successful in its aim to prevent building over "green areas". Recently it has become apparent that there are areas in and around Calverley that are prime locations for building. Some feel that such building works may have a major impact not only on access to the village, but possibly on village life in general. It is therefore proposed that the "residents group" group be set up/re-instated in order to inform and share information on proposed "physical/environmental alterations" to the village. If you are interested in joining this group, email: communityresidentsassociation@gmail.com.

Rodley’s Own Gold Postbox! In last month’s issues for both areas A and B, Covered was delighted to have a photograph of Pudsey Pacers paying tribute to Olympian Alistair Brownlee’s gold postbox in Horsforth. We are equally delighted to have been able to feature Paralympian David Stone’s gold postbox outside Rawdon Post Office, though this time in Area A alone. But wait – the present owners of The Old Post Office, now a private residence in Rodley, have treated passers-by to a gold postbox of their very own. Are readers aware of any similar artwork in the area? Should other postboxes or similar street furniture be repainted in other colours? Which colour, and in honour of whom or what?
Pencil It In! Diary Dates David Stone has been honoured with this gold postbox outside Rawdon Post Office. Local resident and Rotarian Barrie King is shown putting it to good use – perhaps just as well he was wearing his sunglasses.
Rawdon PO already has a gold postbox in honour of Paralympian David Stone – whom MP Stuart Andrew wished well in his column last month. The present owners of The Old Post Office in Rodley decided that they weren’t being outdone by Royal Mail and have repainted their very own. Who or what should be next?

Rodley ARLFC find themselves up against it The newly formed Yorkshire Junior League is not yet one full season old. When Covered magazine visited the Rodley Rockets vs Featherstone Lions match in September, the mumblings from both ends of the touchline were remarkably similar. “The under tens section of the league is a shambles. It isn’t competitive. Allocation to any of the six Divisions, and positions within them, are arbitrary and can change week by week. This has resulted in the most ridiculous mis-matches. We (Featherstone) have won each of our past three games by over thirty points. Our team isn’t getting any competition. “The process of player registration has been prolonged to a point where initial enquiries from parents and their enthusiastic children have been frustrated by unnecessary delay. The website is so changeable that teams need to check it almost on a daily basis to see who next Saturday’s opponents are likely to be.”
This match between Rodley Rockets and Featherstone Lions u10s was abandoned early in the second half due to Featherstone’s superiority in numbers – and size. But both teams have been losers in the face of a league system that hasn’t given either side an evenly balanced match in weeks, frustrates prompt registration and seems to allocate opponents and venues almost at random. And yes – that is a girl on the left. Mixed teams are permitted up to this age bracket.
The season now almost at a close, so let’s all hope that the organisers spend the next six months putting something better in its place. In the meantime, parents of prospective juniors may contact Dave Elson on 07774 844708. Sponsors are also welcome to get in touch.

14 Local Matters Turning in their graves. What would the captains of Victorian Pudsey’s industry and society have to say about LCC’s stewardship of the cemetery’s twin chapels? Feral pigeons and other vermin are the only visitors with access these days.
Pudsey Cemetery Twin Chapels Falling Deeper into Disrepair Local historian, family historian and genealogist Jackie Depelle recently contacted Covered magazine expressing concern about the continuing dilapidation of Pudsey Cemetery’s Twin Chapels. Her concerns are well founded. In 2009, The Victorian Society listed the twin chapels as among Britain’s ten most endangered buildings. Things are no better today. The twin chapels are the work of noted Victorian architect William Gay and date from 1875. Curiously, the cemetery itself (also Gay’s) is listed Grade II in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens but the chapels have no such designation. They were last used more than ten years ago. Since then they have been open only to the elements and vermin. The window arches are part bricked but otherwise unprotected and several areas of the roof are covered in flapping tarpaulin or PVC. Areas higher up are sprouting ground elder and rowan trees. Registered Veterinary Nurse & Member of National Association of Registered Pet Sitters
The word on the street is that Leeds City Council is waiting for a private or charitable concern to take responsibility for the chapels off their hands, renovate them and turn them into some kind of business or community facility – in the same way Kirklees Council offloaded Batley Cemetery’s Twin Chapels (rather successfully we should add). Though surely they should be doing more to arrest further decay in the meantime?

The lawn will benefit from scarifying and spiking, with the blades of your mower set slightly higher to assist with its slower growth. Then apply an autumn feed to the grass, which promotes strong root growth without making it grow longer. It is good practise to reduce your roses and other tall growing perennials by at least one third, to prevent wind rock which can lead to premature failure. If your plants have grown much larger this year, it is possible to split these clumps, replanting the new sections while the soil is still warm and moist.

Improvements are finally to begin on a popular right of way in Farsley. The proposed works to the ginnel, which is located just off Town Street, are being promoted by the Regeneration section of Leeds City Council. The overall aim of the project is to improve safety for users, and will include the renewal of cobble setts, installation of a safety barrier to the side of the ginnel, plus a heritage style pedestrian platform to the top.
Hello again,
On a more positive note, a consultation has started about introducing some residents only parking areas near Richmond Road. It's very important we hear from you - if you are affected you will have received a letter. Highways will deal with your responses firstly, then we'll meet with them to finalise a scheme. Residents' only parking is always a tricky business to get right, but we're increasingly concerned about the effect on people living in the area of daytime parking for Dawsons Corner offices - as well as the danger caused if emergency vehicles can't get through a street. After a delay caused by BT price rises (really, it's true) we confident the CCTV camera for Farfield Avenue shops will also be up and running soon. And in Rodley we've agreed alterations to Bridge Rd to improve pedestrian safety and hopefully reduce rat-running toward the Rodley Roundabout, whilst not limiting access for residents. We'll be in touch with people living nearby before the work commences. Don't forget it's easy to get in touch via leeds.gov.uk or come and see us 1st and 3rd Saturday, Calverley Library 10am, Farsley Library 11am.
Pudsey Antiques Fair Back on Track This Month Pudsey Civic Hall has for many years hosted numerous doll, miniature, transport memorablia, model train, stamps, coins, postcards and militaria fairs. Though a while ago a longstanding antiques and collectibles fair came to a close when the organisers were unable to agree revised terms with the venue. The event was sadly missed by trade and public alike. More recently, however, Andy and Jo Riley of Rodley, under the guise of their recently formed Warley Fairs, have spent the past six months researching – and confirming – the need for the return of similar events to the area. Accordingly, they have reserved the sixty-stand capacity Civic Hall for antiques and collectibles fairs on Saturdays 29 September and 11 November. The use of Saturdays is quite a departure from the usual oneday format on Sundays – ideally attracting trade and public otherwise engaged.

For years I have tried to get this ginnel refurbished. This project will see the work we commissioned as local councillors to improve Farsley Town Street finally completed.
- Councillor Andrew Carter (Conservative, Calverley & Farsley ward)
“
I am sure everyone will be pleased to hear that this long established, and well used footpath is to finally get the facelift it deserves.
“
Cllr. Joe Marjoram Calverley and Farsley
I'll begin with an apology to anyone who has tried to use the bench at the former site of the public toilets in Farsley (including you, Busy Betty!). It should never have been installed on a patch of grass. We're asking for a plan to be drawn up for some appropriate paving. Please bear with us while we rustle up the money - but it will be moved.
FARSLEY GINNEL TO GET LONG AWAITED FACELIFT
“
Cllr Joe Marjoram
Warley Fairs’ predecessors at Pudsey Civic Hall, Dualco Promotions, continue to attract top exhibitors of both antiques and collectibles at venues throughout the north. There is no reason why Warley Fairs shouldn’t be able to put Pudsey well and truly back on the map.

- Councillor Rod Wood (Conservative, Calverley & Farsley ward)
The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of October, until which time the ginnel will be closed to pedestrians.
Keri Cromack from Bramley belting it out at Rodley Fun Day in June.
Keri Cromack - on the Way to Stardom? Keri Cromack, from Bramley, could be one step closer to the big time on 13 October when, at Dewsbury Town Hall, she will be competing in the Regional Final of Open Mic UK 2012 – the UK’s largest musical competition for singers and solo musicians. The next dates would be the area final (same venue) on 24 November and then the Grand Final in London on 13 January. Seventeen-year-old Keri is a familiar face and voice at live music venues throughout north Leeds, including The Commercial in Pudsey and Grey Horse in Horsforth. At one time alongside three similarly aged musicians, now just the one, she is lead vocalist in the duo Roadside Light. Keri studies the performing arts, and music, at Leeds West Academy. Her talent as a vocalist came to light in 2009 when she was joint winner in the Bramley Has Talent competition. She will be performing again in Bramley on 28 October at its very first music festival. Keri has a further chance of getting herself noticed on 14 October when, as part of Roadside Light, she appears in the finals of Leeds City Council’s Breeze Has Talent competition at Northern Ballet Theatre, Quarry Hill. Let’s just hope that Keri shows more talent than LCC – in mid-September their Breeze Has Talent website was still showing dates, venues and contestants for the July/August eliminators – without any mention of the finals or finalists! Keri now has two chances of hitting the big time. As a solo vocalist she is competing in Open Mic UK 2012 Regional Finals at Dewsbury Town Hall, 13 October (tickets £8 on 07907 117184). The following day she is lead singer with Roadside Light in LCC’s Breeze Has Talent finals at Royal Ballet Theatre, Quarry Hill, Leeds 2.

Cycling: Never more popular, but never more dangerous?
• No win - no fee available • No hidden charges
Who would have thought we would be seeing the front pages our national newspapers given over to cycling? First, we had the papers heralding Britain's maiden victor in the 99th Tour De France, Bradley Wiggins, and now, as I write, they are celebrating a silver medal for Otley's very own, “Queen Elizabeth”; Lizzie Armitstead, in the women's Olympic road race. These great performances have helped further increase cycling's profile and have coincided with a number of other initiatives and factors that have see the participation and popularity of pedalling soar. We not only have commuters saving money by cycling to work, whole families being bitten by the cycling bug but we see our political figures almost fighting to be pictured with their bike helmet festooned on head.
• 100% Compensation • Speak to an independent solicitor for the best advice • Accident companies or insurance company referrals may not give you the best deal Rogan Ashton, Wilsons Solicitors
Whilst cycling is on the rise and the cyclist must be making a mark on the public consciousness there is no getting away from the fact that the cyclist remains our most vulnerable road user. The cyclist, in contrast to the pedestrian, who is frequently kept away from traffic, is right there, battling for space amongst the juggernauts, buses and cars. Cars too have also continued their increase, long since moved on from being a luxury item, there are now an incredible 33 million cars on the UK roads. The rise in both sets of numbers mean that accidents between cyclists and cars are more and more likely.

Whilst I will decline to enter the battlefield of cyclists v motorists, partly because the same people frequent both, the reality is that there is only going to be one winner in a collision between human bone and metal. I have dealt with many claims by injured cyclists and the effects can sadly be very serious. Otley’s own “Queen Elizabeth”, Lizzie Armistead (Photo by David Iliff)

CoveredCoach - with Susan Harper Todd
Did you know that you have a sixth sense which is your intuition? You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘it was my feminine intuition’ used to explain some seemingly crazy decision making process which turned out to be right! Your intuition is a feeling, a hunch, a knowing that something is the ‘right thing’, even if we can’t explain how we know. Our intuition is literally our internal GPS, our inner guidance system. A lot of the time we follow our intuition without knowing it. So when you act on a hunch, or because ‘it feels right’, if you have a gut feeling about something or you just ‘know’ that a particular course of action is the right one to take, then you’re following your intuition!
Are you an inspirational Local lady? Do you know of a local woman of achievement? Maybe you’ve set up a successful club or society, or grasped a challenge with both hands. We’re looking for Local Ladies with a story to feature in future editions of Covered so please let us know your story!
Our intuition is always right. It really does know best, but because we’re so used to listening to our mind, that insistent voice in our head, we tend not to hear the quiet, subtle voice of our intuition, which makes itself apparent in the form of a gut feeling and through our emotions. But if we can learn to tune in to our sixth sense, decision making becomes easier To learn more about overcoming life’s challenges and so does reaching our goals. visit Susan’s website: www.susanharpertodd.com

Leeds United Ladies
U S E
Leeds United Ladies got their new season off to a solid start as they notched up six points in their first three matches in the women’s Premier League National Division. Leeds also won their opening Premier League Cup Group match, beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 on the road.
Y O U R L O F T
The Ladies who play their home matches at Throstle Nest are likely to be regular visitors to the Farsley ground with five home matches in a row between September and November, giving the fantastic side their chance to jump to the top of the standings. Last season Leeds United finished second in the division, missing out on the league honours by just one point. Sunderland Ladies were eventually crowned champions, their second successive title victory. The gap between the two sides has been significantly closed however, and Leeds will be desperate to get revenge this time around by pipping their rivals to the 2012/13 honours. Last season’s top scorer Carey Huegett, who netted 22 goals in just 27 starts for the club last season has continued her predator like form in front of goal, already boasting three goals in the opening four matches for her side. Leeds will be relying on the likes of her and Jess Holbrook to weigh in with the goals as the team hope to emulate the success of reigning champions Sunderland. New manager Andy Burgess has a tough act to follow after last season’s high placed finish but is eager to build on the results under the previous tenure of Chris Welburn. Burgess told the Leeds United Ladies website: “I’m looking forward to building on that success, pushing forward this season and keeping the club at the top where it belongs.” Adult tickets priced at just £4, Over 60’s and Under16s £2 while Leeds United Season Ticket Holders can enter for just £3. Bramley Phoenix Off to a Flier Bramley Phoenix got their Northern Division, Yorkshire 3, season underway, winning the opening two matches. Bramley ended last year in sixth position but look to have the sights set much higher this year as they stormed to impressive back-to-back victories. Bramley kicked off with a nerve jangling 20-19 win away at Burley, the perfect, if somewhat hardfought manner to start off the season. Phoenix then impressively built on their first win with a 54-0 trouncing of a visiting York team. Next up for the impressive side are trips to Thornensians and Old Rishworthians with a home match against Rotherham Phoenix between the two away fixtures. If Bramley can continue their fantastic start to the season, then they could be difficult to dislodge from the top of the table.

Spiders Relish New Season
Stuttering Farsley Struggle Farsley AFC have begun their new campaign in stuttering fashion as they aim to fire their way to promotion in the Evo-Stik Division 1 North. New striker Adam Priestley, who signed in the summer has been a revelation for Farsley, a potent pre-season being built upon as he has notched up four goals already, including a brace in the 5-3 victory in the opening home fixture at Throstle Nest against Salford City. Neil Parsley’s side were also knocked out of the F.A Cup First Round Qualifying, as they were beaten 1-0 by Ossett Albion in a replay following a disappointing 1-1 draw at home leading to the replay. As a result Farsley will miss out on a trip to North Ferriby United and relinquish the chance to boost club coffers with the generous prize money that a run in the prestigious F.A Cup provides. The side from Throstle Nest faced Ossett Albion three times in a row, losing 2-0 away in the league before drawing 1-1 in the cup and then another away defeat in the cup. Farsley have a favourable couple of months, where they will play eight matches at home, looking for a positive response to the season which has so far seen them consistently inconsistent. Farsley ended last season with play-off agony, losing in the semifinals, however the team have strengthened and will be gung-ho to achieve the promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier Division A current dip in form must be overcome rapidly however if they are to keep the dream of promotion alive and challenge for honours come May. To keep up-to-date with all goings on at the club, you can visit their website at farsleyafc.co.uk entry to the home matches are priced at just £7 for adults while accompanied children can watch for £1
Kevin Bicknall and Dave Evans take on the elements at maiden rally
Pudsey’s Rally team get trophy in first race! The Pudsey team of Kevin Bicknell and co-driver David Evans competed for the first time together as they took to the dirt in the Opposite Lock racing at Manby Motorplex in Lincolnshire. The omens were never great, driver Kevin Bicknell had never competed in the event or even rallied on dirt previously, however, navigator David Evans had taken part in the event previously as the two tested out the car for the first time. The rally was divided into eight separate stages and after a cautious start the duo began to gain confidence as each stage passed by. With confidence brimming the team working in tandem Kevin Bicknell said after a successful fourth stage; “I absolutely loved that stage, we made up a lot of time on that one, any chance we can do that stage again!” Meanwhile navigator David Evans was probably less than impressed by the exuberance of his driver to use the handbrake and screaming down his ear; “WOW! Did you see that!” in all honesty it perhaps wasn’t the best idea. By the penultimate stage there was some great camaraderie in the car and the pair were brimming with confidence as they swung the car round some exhilarating fast flowing corners, getting progressively quicker throughout. The stage even provided a large jump, but after seeing a £80,000 Subaru demolished by the jump it was wise to take to the hazard with an air of caution rather than being airborne! The final stage saw the team experience some damage to the car after clipping the bank but all in all experienced a memorable first drive. Kevin and David finished 40th overall and 9th in their class. They were also the 1st Slaitewaite Motor Club team home, and were presented with a well deserved trophy at the end of the day. The next event is the Jersey Rally in October, a full tarmac rally, with over 30 stages, lasting an exhausting three days.

The team are continually looking for local sponsors, and urge interested parties to contact Kevin Bicknell on 07507648920 or kdmotorsport@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
Leeds Spiders wheelchair basketball team are getting ready to start their new season in the Wheelchair Basketball North Division 1 and 3. The Spiders begin the new season in October with the incredibly tough challenge of last year’s league winners the Sheffield Steelers. The North Division 1 is sure to be ultra competitive yet again this year, with many hopeful players, desperate to get their name in the hat for the GB Paralympic team and the Road to Rio 2016. Leeds Spiders 1st team can only go one way this season after finishing at the foot of the table last year, however, in such a competitive and strong division it will be another tough test, but one the players will relish again. As for the Spiders 2nd team, they can look to mount a challenge nearer the top of the North Division 3 after cementing 4th position last time around. The side can also look forward to a well deserved new kit this season following the generosity of Sainsbury’s customers in the Leeds who helped to fund the team’s attire. The continued interest, and the expectation of further interest following the Paralympics means that the Spiders are looking to start up a women’s side as well, developing the club further and driving them forward for the future.
