Wills Wilsons can help with major changes or challenges in your life. We make things easier for you and your loved ones when change happens. Some people don’t like to think about making a will, others see it as good preparation - death affects the people around you too. Wills - The Important Facts If you don’t have a will don’t assume everything will go to your partner if you die. This isn’t necessarily so, especially if you are not married to them. • If you don’t have a will some people might inherit from you purely by being a blood relation whether you would have wanted them to or not. • Houses in joint ownership are automatically inherited by the other joint owner even if your will says differently, unless you have taken proper legal steps to prevent this happening. • If you have a will and then marry your current will is automatically cancelled so you need to make a new one. • If you are getting divorced your husband or wife may still inherit from you until the divorce is final and this can take a while. Change your will immediately to take into account your current wishes. • Tax rules change at least every year and sometimes more often so it is important to take these into account and amend your will accordingly • If you have more children or grandchildren then you may wish to include the new addition(s) into your will • Has a beneficiary of your will got failing health or perhaps they may need to go into a care home. Do you want the money you leave them to be claimed for care home fees. Making a will is an opportunity to consider all sorts of things such as who you would want to wind up your affairs when you die, who would look after your children and so on. Making your wishes clear at the outset means there are no arguments later about what you would or wouldn’t have wanted. It makes the whole process so much clearer and easier for those who are left behind and gives you peace of mind for the future.

A Letter from the Editor
Covered
Welcome to another packed edition of Covered – the magazine with commitment to the community. Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night are but a distant memory and the countdown to Christmas is well underway. Many local businesses rely on the festive period so please, before you set off to the White Rose Centre, take a look around your local retailers – you might find just what you’re looking for without driving to the other side of the city. Our local businesses generally offer a friendly smile and great customer service too – another couple of reasons to keep it local.

Busy Betty
The views of Busy Betty are not necessarily those of the publisher.
It has been an eventful couple of weeks in the ‘Busy’ household. And it seems that we’re not the only ones who have been busy. This month, I’ve been out and about in Pudsey and I’m delighted to see that scaffolding is up at the old Pudsey Grangefield School. Work may have began a while ago unnoticed, but the scaffolding is a clear sign that work to redevelop the school into apartments is progressing.
Building work has also commenced at what was the Baby Clinic in Farsley. This is another old ‘gem’ that I’m glad to see being brought back to life. I just hope some of the original features of these buildings will be retained. I think it is great to see old buildings coming back into use and providing new homes – much better than the destruction of green fields to erect a new toytown development. Kirklees Knoll anyone... Also busy this month were the hard-working dears who cleared up every last piece of litter in the area I recently highlighted. This particular spot is a popular place for teenagers to hang around – and dispose of their rubbish. Well done to those who were responsible for the clean-up. I bet it wasn’t an easy task but I (and I’m sure others) appreciate it. This month I have been alerted to the fact that access through Pudsey market during the Sunday morning car boot sale is not permitted – unless you pay a fee. Surely this is a public thoroughfare that should be accessible seven days a week? When my informant queried the fee he was told to ‘mind his own business’. I’d love to hear if anyone else has encountered this problem – and what your thoughts are.
I compared the splash of water when a car drove through a pothole to being like a tsunami. Some of our readers took offense to such a trivial event being compared to a tsunami. My comments were never intended to offend. As always, I was simply thinking of our community and highlighting an area that may be improved.
Finally, last month I appealed to drivers to consider pedestrians when driving in wet conditions.

carpetbaggers Guiseley’s Carpetbaggers Theatre group offers something for the whole family, with the chance to see local talent tread the boards right on your doorstep. The emphasis is on community with support from local people and businesses, such as the Wetherby Whaler.
Stars of the show: Jane Steadman as Robinhood and Lynne Howell as Maid Marian
President Martin Holmes formed the group in 2010 when he was inspired to create a non-profit theatre group in which anybody could have a go, Carpetbaggers introduced their sell out pantomime The Wizard of Wharfedale. In 2012 after another smash - When the lights go on again the group showcased their versatility with One Day More, a cabaret evening featuring popular songs of the shows. Carpetbaggers’ new production is Robin Hood, and given they had an Elvis impersonator in their first ever show, you get some idea of the fun surrounding this merry band of people. Robin Hood is at Guiseley theatre Nov 29th – Dec 1st See advertisement for booking details and remember to quote Covered magazine! 35,000 Roofs And Counting! The worst rainfall for more than 30 years has brought misery and mess to many. It may have damaged a flat roof in your home or business. The Flat Roof Company has fitted more than 35,000 roofs on homes, schools and commercial premises around Yorkshire. This success is, in part, due to its use of new materials such as ‘Tuffdek’ (reinforced polyester laminate) and its new complementary system, ‘Tufflex’ – encapsulating the roof with no joins and minimising the chances of a leak. They have gone even further by introducing a super efficient insulating material into new or repaired flat roofs. The appropriately named “Warm Roof” is a foil-backed insulating board up to ten times more efficient than the fibre glass quilting normally used. Up to 30% of heat can be lost through a flat roof, but the “Warm Roof” reduces that to under 5%, an obvious saving on heating bills.
“Over 25 years, we have built our expertise and reputation for quality work and material” said director Kevin Moody. “In the unlikely event of problems in the future, they know we’ll be here. Some companies do a job offering a 25 year guarantee and then go bust, leaving a worthless warranty. Our 25 year warranty is insurance-backed, so will be honoured no matter what”. The Flat Roof Company built up such a good reputation in the industry that it was often approached by others wanting to emulate them. The company now operates carefully trained and regulated franchises and has a network of 20 around the county. “We are fully licensed by the British Board of Agreements, a watchdog in our industry” says Kevin. “We are subject to regular quality checks before re-licensing, so we know we are doing things right”. Bramley’s First Music Festival Despite the cold weather, crowds gathered at Bramley Park this month to join in the fun at Bramley’s first music festival. At peak times there were an estimated 600-700 people enjoying the live music which included rapper Smokey Roomz, Punk band ‘The Kingcrows’ and Leedslocal male vocalist Danny Kittsen. Many of the crowd were not even born when Black Lace’s party anthems ‘Superman’, ‘Agadoo’ and ‘Do The Conga’ topped the ‘hit parade’ (or are aware that such a term even exists!) but everyone joined in the fun as the band’s lead singer Dene Michael got the crowd singing along and learning a few new dance moves!

It took months of hard work to organise the event but The next Bramley Music Festival will be held on organiser Terence modestly said ‘We are just normal 1 and 2 June 2013.

Bramley Reading Tutor Volunteers According to the National Literacy Trust, one in six adults in the UK has a reading level no better than that expected of an eleven year old. Illiteracy leads to low employment prospects, disengagement and in turn, in some cases, criminal behaviour. Halloween Craft Fun at Children’s Centre Home Tweet Home It was a morning of crafty fun with a Halloween flavour at the Farsley/Calverley Children’s Centre during half term. Children were invited to come along in their scariest Halloween costumes to make masks, cut our pumpkins and decorate treat bags which they got to take home. Grandmother of two, Val Burke, said: ‘The staff have worked so hard to make sure that everyone has had a really good time. There has been so much to do, we haven’t had time to do everything, but we’ve really enjoyed the morning’.
Earlier this month, Pudsey Park became the home of a quirky and very unique, interactive family art trail, ‘Home Tweet Home’. The installation which was organised by the ‘I Love West Leeds Festival’ comprised of 15 originally identical wooden bird boxes that were transformed by artists. Organiser Jane Earnshaw, who handcrafted each of the fifteen bird boxes herself, said ‘The Art Trail has been a great success. We’ve had over 1000 visitors come to see us. Some people have come [to the park] specifically to see the installation while others have had a pleasant surprise while just out for a walk’. With its beautiful backdrop of autumnal leaves, Pudsey Park was an attractive setting for the art trail. It was also chosen to be the venue of the art installation as compensation to Pudsey locals who may have been disappointed when the Summer Festival scheduled earlier in the year sadly had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Popular bird boxes included the box that was redeveloped to become a marble run by German artist Bea Rohle and a bird box that was transformed into a mini post box complete with postcards for viewers to post their opinions on the art trail. Local Dad, Christopher Dickenson, who attended the event said, ‘The kids have had a great time looking for the bird boxes and choosing their favourites. What a novel idea! I hope it will be an annual event’.

If you have any other bulbs still unplanted, dig them in at the same time before the ground is frozen. Continue to dig over any vacant soil areas, spreading your own home made compost over the top of the soil – or digging it in – together with any farm yard or mushroom compost to enrich the soil This is a good time to plant new bare root rose bushes and fruit trees, enriching the planting hole with compost and bone meal or other slow acting fertilizer. Broad beans may also be planted now for the earliest crops, preferably with some form of winter protection or in a sheltered area. Ensure all ponds and water features are regularly cleaned of fallen leaves and other algae, using a net to catch falling debris where appropriate. The greenhouse is another cleaning project, using Jeyes Fluid or similar to wash down the whole structure – including your seed trays and pots ready for next year. Then if you are keeping plants in over the winter, fix bubble wrap of garden fleece to the framework to maintain a frost free environment. If
The trees are looking beautiful with their orange colours, so as the leaves fall gather them into black plastic sacks for rotting down – putting holes in for air. If space is available, make a chicken wire cage and let them rot down naturally in a large a pile as possible. Stuart Andrew MP It has been a busy month in Westminster, with MPs back in the thick of it with the end of the conference season. Leeds MPs have once again been able to raise the issue of Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Unit following the announcement from the Secretary of State for Health that an independent panel would be looking at the Safe and Sustainable Review into children’s heart surgery services. I have long spoken out in Parliament about the countless flaws and inaccuracies of the Review and am pleased that the process by which the decision to close the Leeds Unit was reached will be examined by an independent party. As Private Parliamentary Secretary to Rt Hon Francis Maude MP I have been learning more about the excellent work which the Cabinet Office has been carrying out since the election and have been amazed at some of the results which Francis and his team have achieved. For example, the Government exited over 1.2 million square miles of property and reduced the size
of its estate by 12%. That is the size of 174 Wembley pitches. £3.7 billion of efficiency savings were made in the first year of the Efficiency and Reform Group, a group set up by this Government, with a further £5 billion is expected to be saved for 2011-12. Finally, as I write this column, Remembrance Sunday is just a few days away, with services to be held all over the constituency, several of which I will be attending along with many others from the area. It is so important that we honour those brave men and women who laid down their lives defending ours and I hope that as many people as possible will come out and show their support on the day.

Marie Curie Cancer Care Fundraising Group Needs You! Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing, totally free, to give people with terminal Cancer and other illnesses the choice of dying at home supported by their families. Last November the communities of Pudsey, Bramley, Farsley and Calverley joined together to form the first Marie Curie Cancer Care fundraising group in the area. Their first year has been rather busy to say the least with two major collections and a blooming Great Tea Party, raising an impressive £6500 so far! To continue their success the group are looking for more volunteers to join their fantastic team. The work of volunteers is varied, it may include collecting now and then, or giving a few hours a month at the group’s monthly meetings or maybe even organising fundraising events.

Exhibitors Invited to Sunnybank Mills New Exhibition Centre Already home to a community of small businesses, Sunnybank Mills in Farsley now has a light, bright, large and airy permanent art exhibition area on the first floor of a refurbished cloth warehouse. Brainchild of co-director John Gaunt, the first longer-term single artist exhibition opened on 13 October when local artist Shane Green unveiled his sculpture Triathletes II. The work was inspired by his interest in London 2012 and his friendship with Jack Maitland (both pictured). Jack is a freelance triathlon trainer, also lecturing at Leeds Metropolitan University - the multi medal and title winning Brownlee brothers are among his clientele. The large exhibition of Shane’s prints, large oils and sculpture runs until 23 November. John Gaunt explained to Covered; “This is presently an exhibition area and not a gallery per se. We don’t have sufficient resources or experience to open it on a permanent basis, only for limited viewing at set times. Here at Sunnybank Mills we support local art and artists. We’d like to hear of any other local artists who would like to be displayed – and from anyone with suggestions of how the space might be put to more regular use”. John Gaunt is on 0113 2563239 and 07977 571784.
Local singer-songwriter-guitarist Boff Whalley (of Chumbawumba) provided the musical entertainment.
Around 400 local art enthusiasts visited the opening.

New Headingley pitch will guarantee fixtures Jason Booth, award winning Head Groundsman of Leeds Rugby is confident that the redeveloped playing surface at Headingley Carnegie will guarantee home fixtures are playable for many years to come.
Should all go to plan people can expect to see more high profile fixtures, “In year one it will be a learning curve for everyone as we get used to the new pitch and how it works. Further down the line in years four and five we can expect to see more events here.” Booth and his team have been working long hours to ensure that the playing surface is ready for the annual Boxing Day fixture which will see the Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos play for the first time since their Old Trafford triumph. Many may expect the long hours to have taken their toll but Booth insists every day is exiting as his team continue to find hidden treasures. “When we dug up the surface we found some water bottles dating back to 1888. Its quiet exciting because no one actually knew what we would find.”
Eyebrows were raised when the world’s first dual code rugby partnership announced a huge one million pound investment into the redevelopment programme. However Booth claims that it was a necessary business decision. He said, “I have been asking for a new pitch since I came here 13 years ago. For many years now we have been 10 shots behind some other grounds. The new pitch will allow us to Leeds Rugby have high hopes for the standard guarantee that we can stage events all the year round of their new turf. “The pitch will be maintained on a world class surface.” to Premier League football standards. We have announced a partnership will Everris which means It was announced recently that the famous that the cost of seed and fertilizer will be covered. Headingley stadium would host one of the quarter This will give us more time to focus on the pitch,” finals at next years Rugby League World Cup. added Booth.
Mixed month for Farsley Farsley AFC sit sixth in Evo Stick North Division One after a month of inconsistent results. Despite going on a fine run of six wins in a row, the Throstle Nest side has hit a few stumbling blocks of late including a heavy 4-0 away defeat by Bamber Bridge. The scoreline was not helped by injuries to several key players including goalkeeper Tom Morgan. They also suffered a shock early exit from the West Riding County Cup when they were beaten at home by Albion Sports.
In the coming weeks Farsley AFC faces tough away fixtures against New Mills and Salford City, though home ties against the likes of Ossett Albion look winnable. At this stage of the season it is impossible to predict where Farsley will finish due to the fact that many teams have played less fixtures. Farsley have played sixteen matches this campaign with others as many as five behind. Farsley has added to their media team two student journalists from Huddersfield University in a bid to raise the profile of the club off the pitch, if not on.

Edwards: It’s too early to judge success of ‘On The Road’ games Leeds Carnegie Head Coach Diccon Edwards insists the success of the club’s new ‘on the road’ initiative will only become apparent at the end of the season. The club announced at the beginning of the season that a certain percentage of their home games would be taken to smaller grounds across the region, in an attempt to foster better working relationships with local clubs. The first ‘home’ fixture to be staged away from the Headingley Carnegie Stadium was the narrow British and Irish Cup defeat to Championship newcomers Jersey at York RUFC. Despite the fixture attracting a crowd of just 820, Edwards is adamant that such a scheme should not be judged purely on attendances and results.
Speaking to Covered magazine he said, “The success of the "on the road" should not be judged purely on results but on the overall day as an event, the opportunity to build county wide relationships and strengthen our partner clubs whilst raising our profile and reengaging with fans across the county.” The RFU Championship side have also announced that their two home fixtures in December will also be played away from LS6, with the match against Bedford Blues on December 2nd to take place at Otley RUFC with a 2pm kick-off, while the British and Irish Cup match against Pontypridd is moved to West Park Leeds RUFC the following week, starting at the
