In

medieval times monasteries, including our local Kirkstall Abbey, played a leading role in

the production of beer. In a time when beer was safer to drink than water the monks ran the one organisation capable of producing sufficient to provide for the local community. And of course the money it generated helped to pay for running their churches.

In recent years there has been renewed interest in locally produced, traditional beers. The monasteries are long gone but churches up and down the land are now hosting ‘Beer Festivals’, community gatherings using the space churches

are so often best placed to provide. Once again the revenue produced is helping to maintain our church buildings for the benefit of everyone.

Just as the monks found sharing a beer or two proved very conducive to building community, sharing news and being a listening ear for their guests, so too churches are today finding these community events conducive to offering real hospitality and friendship to their local parishes. Welcome to St Margaret’s Church’s sixth Annual Beer and Cider Festival. We hope you experience a warm welcome, good conversations and of course great beer! Rev Nigel Sinclair Team Rector at St Margaret’s Horsforth The next Horsforth Beer & Cider Festival takes place on 6th & 7th March 2015. We look forward to seeing you there!

Stuart Andrew MP 94A Town Street Horsforth Leeds LS18 4AP T: 0113 258 5615 www.stuartandrew.com There is an enviable list of Beers and Ciders available at this year’s festival with many of the beers and ales coming from independent Yorkshire breweries such as Wharfebank, Kirkstall and Ilkley. There is a great tradition in this country of producing real ale and the number of microbreweries forming continues to grow. The Strangers’ Bar in the House of Commons often features ales produced from independent brewers and I am always particularly proud when I see my colleagues enjoying a pint that has been made in Yorkshire.
