Bramley Carnival 2013
Wow how the time goes by. We are now in our 7th year bringing you the revived Bramley Carnival. What a success last year carnival was with an estimated attendance of 4500 people. All were able to enjoy the carnivals attractions, dance displays and bands, not to forget the expanding parade. Lo Terence (Chairman) and Lady Helen (Secretary) for Bramley Carnival would like Lord to welcome you to this year’s event on Sunday 21st July 2013. Fun and amazement is the aim of this year’s event which we hope will be bigger and better than last year. Our theme this year is Flower Power. In this present climate of financial economic recession the carnival has obviously had a tough time financially. We would like to Thank the Inner Area West Committee for funding of £4250 and Bramley First funding of £2500. along with local sponsorship from businesses. With continued support from local councilors Ted Hanley, Caroline Gruen and Neil Taggart we have again been able to stage this years events. Big thanks goes out to these people. Without this financial help there would be no Carnival. Please do consider giving us a donation on the day as this helps with the ca following years carnival. I would also like to thank the committee especially Lee Ingham (Treasurer), Christine Butterfield (Accountant), Michaela Stevenson for their hardwork and commitment. This year's printed program has been edited and printed by Covered Magazine. Chris Barnham and his colleagues have worked hard to get the advertisers so that they could sponsor the production. A big thank you goes out to them all. Finally I would like to say a big thank you to the late Bill Rowe of Radio Poplar who unfortunately passed away recently. His help along with Chris Eagle helped to make the dreams come true of our past Queens and Princesses as they picked their names from a hat and interviewed them on the radio. He will be missed greatly but in fitting tribute to him , this year , presenter Wes Butters and newsreader Michael Henderson from BBC Radio Leeds had the honour of picking the carnival queen and princesses. A brilliant day is lined up for you with performances from live bands and singers, displays from majorette troupes not forgetting the return of Chester the clown. Whatever you choose to do let's make Bramley Carnival 2013 the best it's ever been , a day of peace, fun and enjoyment for all the family. Have a good day and just as importantly, let the day be sunny and warm. Lo Terence (Chairperson) Lord Lady Helen (Secretary)

Angels in Chaos formed at the beginning of 2012 as a four peice, urban act. Two girls and two boys, who throughout the last year, and plenty of member changes, have settled with today’s final line up: Ellie-Kate, Ashleigh and Yasmin - three girls with plenty of personality! The girls have been working hard recording their first album, including photoshoots, rehearsals, gigs and alot more. They have performed throughout Yorkshire, and have plenty more gigs booked in. Recent highlights for the band have been competing in Teenstar - reaching the regional finals at the Sheffield City Hall, also performing at a huge outdoor event in Bramley, Leeds. The girls are signed with Bravesoul records and will be releasing their e.p. soon - keep an ear out for them! Mike Raffone & The Bluetones are a Rock & Roll Tribute band from Leeds who reformed after 15 years apart. After a successful 5 years gigging around West Yorkshire they continue to take bookings. Look out for their performance of Wipeout - one of their most requested numbers! 12 years old LucieWhitmore comes from a musical family. Her Great Nan, Emily, was a piano teacher in the 1940s and Great Grandad, George, was in a black and white minstrels troupe. Grandad Tony was in several Jazz Bands. Nan ,Jean, was in Sheffield City Choir, and performed as a dancer.

Bramley Carnival 2013 2387 (Pudsey) Squadron ATC 2387 (Pudsey) Squadron welcomes those between the ages of 13 and 20 to join us in a wide range of activities and courses that will challenge and develop your skills to help you succeed in whatever you want to do. The ATC is the RAF’s cadet force, divided into six regions, 36 wings and more than 900 squadrons within communities around the UK. Pudsey Sqn is part of the South and West Yorkshire Wing, which is included in the North Region. For two years running, Pudsey Sqn has been awarded the accolade of “Best Squadron in South & West Yorkshire Wing” and we are constantly developing and adding to, the activities on offer to our cadets, to continue to live up to this title.
Overview of the ATC
As a cadet you’ll have the opportunity to do things that others only dream about. Want real flight experience? No problem. How about heading out on adventurous training and camps, sometimes overseas? Normal for cadets. Competitive sports, drill, shooting, music, abseiling, engineering projects? Our list of activities is long, varied pr and open to all cadets. Yes it’s a challenge, but that’s what life’s all about.
Get a head start
We are not a recruiting organisation for the RAF but if you’re thinking about a Service career, cadet membership will put you ahead of the competition. Many cadets go on to great success in the RAF (and the other Services). Around 40% of officers and 50% of all aircrew (including pilots, navigators and engineers) in the RAF now are ex-cadets. Research shows that they do better in basic training and stay in the Service longer than their colleagues. Likewise, if you chose a civilian career our research proves you can go on the great things…employers just love the skills and experience that air cadets offer. of
Let’s face it – where else would you be given the opportunity to fly solo in a glider or powered aircraft when you’re 17? Whatever you do with your life, at the end of your time as a cadet you’ll be self-motivated, confident and ready for anything. To find out more about the opportunities on offer at 2387 (Pudsey) Squadron please get in touch!

Bramley Carnival 2013 Bramley & Stanningley Ward Councillors Bramley Carnival Management Commitee would like to thank the three local Councillors for their support in part funding of the Community Carnival in Bramley. Without their support te Carnival would not take place. The Local Councillors have supported Bramley Carnival for many years now and we are very keen to network with them in order to maintain a Peaceful Carnival for all of our Community creating Harmony for everyone. The Ward Councillors have funded the Bramley Carnival with Mice Money and Inner West Area Committee Funding. Bramley is becoming a great place to live as we are keen on using our Green Spaces for events such as the Bramley Carnival, Bramley Music Festival, and the Bonfire Event. Terence and Helen would sincerely like to Thank Ted Hanley, Caroline Gruen and Neil Taggart for their continued support. Would you also keep Neil Taggart in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from a long standing illness.
RACHEL REEVES MP Rachel is the Member of Parliament for Leeds West and Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Elected in May 2010, she is the first female MP to represent a seat in Leeds since Alice Bacon, who served between 1945 and 1970. Rachel was previously Shadow Pensions Minister, from October 2010 - October 2011. In Leeds West, Rachel has worked hard to continue the community work pioneered by her predecessor, John Battle MP. She has led the fight to save local swimming pool Bramley Baths, successfully argued for better bus services in the constituency and lobbied for the future of Kirkstall Forge. Rachel brings a wealth of experience to her role. She is patron of Bramley Elderly Action, and has sat on the board of Bramley and Rodley Community Action and the Leeds Healthy Living Network. Prior to her election, she was a governor at Kirkstall Valley Primary School and Leeds West Academy. Rachel is currently writing a biography of Alice Bacon, and spends her spare time swimming, reading and travelling. Rachel certainly enjoys Bramley Canival and we are delighted to ask her to join us at the Bramley Carnival where she will give a speech to the Community.

Bramley Carnival 2013 Community Enterprise in Bramley In January 2013, Bramley Baths became a community enterprise after local people in West Leeds came together to secure a long, healthy and happy future for this muchloved Edwardian bath-house, gym and community space. Manager Danny Whiteley and his team are already seeing a growing number of people making use of the baths. Shaun Chatterton from West Leeds said, “I’ve lived in the area for about 10 years, but only just discovered the gym at Bramley Baths. I really like being a member there because you get fit while you support a local enterprise that’s about people not profit. It’s a really good feeling.” “The community response has been amazing and the support from our partners, Barca, Bramley Elderly Action and Leeds West Academy”, says Danny. “We’ve been approached by so many people offering to help, asking to get involved and bringing groups or friends to visit and use the Baths. It’s important that we’re working with the community to respond to what people in West Leeds need and want.” Bramley Elderly Action now holds a regular film screening for their reminiscence group in the Recreation Room at the baths, Rec and plans are in development for school and youth groups to make use of the gym and fitness room. Funds raised by the Friends have enabled the team to buy a giant floating obstacle course for the pool, which has been a hit during half terms and holidays, and has allowed the staff to reintroduce pool parties to Bramley Baths.

A new programme of kids activities has been created, with a popular Saturday morning Zumba class for kids aged 4-12 years, and Street Dance, Soccer, Circus Skills and booster swimming lessons running through the Summer holidays. In March 2013, Bramley Baths partnered up with I Love West Leeds Arts Festival, to produce the first swim-along-cinema which included a late night screening of Jaws, supported by Bramley First funding. News of the event reached Jaws enthusiasts in Canada and New Zealand. “We’re planning our second swim-along-cinema now” says Danny, “and we’ve been inundated with suggestions of what films to show next. I’ve never seen anything quite like it and it made people think creatively about how to use the space here.” “Since the swimama, we’ve been approached by Yorkshire Life Aqua to run Mermaid lessons in the pool this summer, and the Friends held a Garden Party in June, with live music and cream teas. Lots of people hadn’t ever used the garden before, and it was lovely to see people wandering out from the pool in their towels to hear the band before they went back in for a dip. People round here are really imaginative and long may that continue. ”

PRS for Music licences the use of copyright music across the UK, giving businesses and organisations the legal permission they need to play the music they want. These licences ensure that music publishers, songwriters and composers are fairly rewarded with royalties so they can keep making music - and mean that we’re able to support music at events like this.
