Horsforth Matters with Bob Horsforth A huge “Thank You” to everyone who has taken the time to either write in or email following last months edition. It is clear that the problems of inconsiderate parking are a growing problem to many local residents and one that the authorities seem unwilling to deal with. Parking and Footpaths I was particularly pleased to hear from a group of residents who live on Broadway (see readers letters) and have been trying for years to get their Councillors to provide Block Paving or suitable Parking Bays outside their houses. This would solve the problems caused by the current necessity to park on the grass verge and footpaths along Broadway. I have passed their details and concerns on to our new Councillor Dawn Collins and hope for a more positive outcome in the coming months.
Road Repairs
Time for new signs?
Welcome to Horsforth
Horsforth Gala
Another issue that has been raised by a great many residents is the embarrassing state of the signs which welcome visitors to Horsforth. Many of these signs are over 35 years old and are in a poor state of repair. Why when places like Gipton and Hunslet have brand new clean signs does Horsforth have to put up with second rate signs? Surely a small amount of revenue could be allocated to resolve this problem, perhaps our Councillors could donate a percentage of their allowances to help fund replacements? I can certainly think of a way to vastly improve signage!
The highlight of the Communities year “Horsforth Gala” was a huge success this year with support from many sections of our Town. I would like to thank the Horsforth Gala Committee for all the hard work that goes into making this annual event such a success. It was wonderful to see so many people turn out for the fun and to be able feel the real sense of community on the day. Next month I will be looking in more detail at some of the problems caused litter and asking what can be done to combat this issue.

As we go to print I can confirm that there seems to have been no improvement in Horsforth’s “Street in the worst state of repair” Broadgate Drive, this despite being top of the poll for 5 months now.

‘Horsforth Matters’ Councillors’ response to expenses
Following our Horsforth Matters reveal on councillors’ expenses last month, one councilor has responded to wide concerns. Chris Townsley revealed that the figures produced for each councillor were from budgeted allowances set out by an Independent Panel and that the figures were in fact gross costs, before tax and National Insurance. He furthered his point by advising that the allocated money to each councillor was ‘fully’ inclusive and took into account all telephone calls and petrol costs for example. Councillors undertake a wide range of roles and receive financial allowances in accordance with a Members’ Allowances Scheme, which sets out the payments to be made for each role. Mr Townsley, is a member of the Licensing Panel, Licensing and Regulatory Panel, Licensing -sub Panel, N.W. Outer Area Committee, Safer and Stronger Communities Scrutiny Board and is on the board of governors at Horsforth School and Westbrook Lane School. Covered Magazine is pleased to offer clarity on the issue.

Leeds City Council has announced a total of £12,000 to give to local, grassroots voluntary and community groups for projects that focus on energy efficiency or make use of renewable energy technologies. Groups can apply for a grant of up to £12,000 for projects that will help reduce Leeds’ carbon emissions. Groups who can demonstrate that their project is a viable yet innovative idea to assist their local community may apply.
Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City Council executive member for environmental services said: “There are groups out there who have great ideas and ambitions to reduce emissions locally and we don’t want a lack of funding to stifle their enthusiasm or innovation. The grant will help those groups who do vital work to cut carbon and I’d encourage people to apply before funding runs out.” For more information, email: sajda.khaliq@leeds.gov.uk or call 0113 395 7159.

Not Entirely as Expected...
Karli Evans thought that Horsforth Park might make an excellent backdrop for a rehearsal of her big day - but she hadn't reckoned on Horsforth Gala being there on the same date. Mind you, one of the Gala's main attractions - Leeds City Pipe Band - hadn't reckoned on coming across a rehearsal wedding. Both Karli (whose grandmother lives nearby) and fiancé Stuart Nolan were delighted by the coincidence.
HAC – Public Meeting
Local campaigners, Horsforth Against Cuts, are having a public meeting to debate the academisation of schools in general but with a focus on Horsforth High School. Speakers will include union representatives and people involved in the anti-academies campaign. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an information service to the people of Horsforth about what is being planned for their children’s future and to act as an opportunity to meet likeminded people keen to build resistance to government plans. The meeting takes place in the Grey Horse Pub, Long Row, Horsforth at 7.30pm on the 14th of July.

Dear Covered,
STAR LETTER £25 Give us a call to claim Dear Covered, Some queries about life here in Horsforth: - Why is it permissible for a few people in light aircraft to gain their pleasure at the expense of the peace of thousands of people on the ground? Some days they whine and drone in circles above our garden for hours on end. - Why are our recycling bins emptied only monthly, when so much of our rubbish is recyclable? The council reply to my letter was rude and contemptuous. - Why do we still have to take our bottles to a bottle bank, when most councils in the country collect them? - Why has planning permission been granted at a property on Victoria Mount which more than doubles the size of the house, creating a monstrosity? Yours sincerely, A baffled resident of Victoria Mount. CoveredMagazine
We have just received the Covered Magazine and looking at the article on page eight [Accidents waiting to Happen - ed. 4] I thought I would email you. As we live in Blackwood Avenue we use Tinshill Lane often. Over the last few weeks it has got gradually worse and it is a nightmare if a vehicle is coming towards you having to pull in for it to pass (if there is room to do so). On may 12th 2011 after picking my granddaughter up from Holy Trinity School in the afternoon heading down Tinshill Road a child ran out between two cars parked on the other side of the road. Thankfully I did not hit him but he fell and grazed his knee. This child plus my granddaughter and myself were very fortunate praise the Lord. A lady saw what happened from her window and came out to tell me it was not my fault. I still feel nervous in going down Tinshill Road. I do hope this may help you. Thank you for all you are doing in our area. Regards Joan Ashcroft

Dear Covered,
Dear Covered,
May I make a plea for the 20MPH limit to be observed on the roads between the Ring Road and off Church Road, Church Avenue and Broadgate Lane? The police have told me it is a ‘gated area’ and they cannot put more notices inside! Bradford makes more use of lit warning signs, as on Brownberrie Lane.
Following your photo of Broadway in last month’s Covered I felt compelled to write to you.
S.A. Shippey King Edward Ave Dear Covered, I retired recently and have now seen local parking issues at first hand - my wife has complained about this for years... i.e. inconsiderate parking by people (usually dropping off & picking up children from school), and the illegal action of long term parkers. Churchgate is a small cul-de-sac that gets more than it's fair share of long term parking, but during school dropoff/pick-up times it gets completely overrun by drivers thoughtlessly parking (some would say abandoning) their vehicles. These vehicles are left partially and sometimes wholly on pavements; they are 'parked' directly on corners, both on and off the kerb. Homeowners petitioned for 'resident only' parking, but have been turned down. The council thinking at the time was that 'if they can't park there, they will park somewhere else'! I would rather view this remark as 'if they can't break the law there, they will break it somewhere else'. I have provided a photo to demonstrate the problem. The car is parked in Church Lane, on double yellow lines, on the kerb, opposite a school zig-zag, and outside two car parking areas. This is a main bus route but the carriageway is reduced to a single lane with buses, lorries and cars backing up in both directions. Although there has not been a major accident there, it certainly isn't through lack of opportunity. Name and address supplied.
Our neighbours and I contacted the council and the highways agency to try to improve this area. We don’t have the access at the back of our properties to park our cars like many properties on Broadway and the council refuses to support us in achieving this. The highways agency is very unhelpful and we are left with no other alternative but to use the grass verges to access our front driveways. We have submitted applications to put in driveways and have been knocked back time and time again. I just wanted to reassure local residents of Horsforth that we are not intentionally trying to create an eye sore. We are looking for solutions and share everyone’s concerns with this issue. The ideal solution would be to allow us residents, to pay and install our own driveways at the front of our properties, like many other properties on this side of Broadway already have. Without the support of the council, this is not an option, we don’t want to have to park on the main road, as this would cause no end of problems to busy traffic. We welcome any ideas, views and opinions to help us in resolving this issue. As you can imagine it is becoming a deep concern, especially in the wetter months of the year. Best Regards Dawn McTasney - Broadway, Horsforth Covered LS18 offers the right of reply to any organisation or individual mentioned in our Horsforth Matters and readers letters pages. There are three maxims to good gardening, sow regular, feed regular and crop regular. The salad season is in full swing, so it is important to sow small quantities of lettuce, rocket, radish and all the other crops every few weeks to ensure you do not have a glut or a period of nothing to eat. In the vegetable area, continue to sow beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, sprouts, carrots Swedes and turnips – for cropping into the autumn and next year. Everyone should be able to enjoy fresh food from their own gardens, from a raised bed or large plant pot – to a specific area in the garden or allotment. The soil will need feeding at the start of the season, with CoveredMagazine
additional fertilizer being added to maintain good productive crops. Growmore granules and fish, blood and bone are the two most common sources of nutrients for both edible crops and flower production. Soft fruits will appreciate a dressing of sulphate of potash to stimulate production of fruit, and in some areas it will be necessary to net the bushes to stop our feathered friends eating all the berries. Many flowers will be looking good at the present time, do keep dead heading them to ensure a succession of blooms. Large dahlias, chrysanthemums, lupins and delphiniums may require staking in windy areas.
It is important to guard against slugs and snails with these soft stemmed perennials, together with spraying other plants against mildew and aphids. Super Susan to scale Everest...Again! After suffering from the pains and despair of losing a loved one, extraordinary ‘Local Lady’ Susan Harper Todd decided to conquer one of life’s toughest challenges and scale Everest. Susan became only the fifth British woman in history to reach the 29,029 foot summit and the first British female to lead an Everest expedition. While there have been around 3,000 who have made it more than 200 have died in their attempts. Susan’s achievement was nothing short of magical, coping with desperate isolation and fighting against all extremes is something which many will never experience in their lives. Her success came after the premature death of her first husband who died of cancer at just 38 years old. Gutsy and determined, Susan turned her life around and has accomplished Cho Oyu

She claimed “this was truly the most beautiful experience of my life.” Susan will now continue her amazing acts of courage and bravery, leading a trek of women to Everest base camp. The base camp lies at 5,300 metres and provides all involved with a once in a lifetime opportunity. Message from Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council
Local People
Welcome to the Summer! During the Summer, the Council committees continue their work supporting the many activities in Horsforth – these include the Gala, the Sports day (a great shame the weather didn’t help), Hope in the Park, the Horsforth in Bloom competition, and the now famous Band Concerts. A very big “Thank You “to everyone who volunteers to help at these events. As we know, even a small event takes a great deal of effort & good will to make the happening enjoyable & a success. Thank You again to everyone. On another note, these volunteers are those people the Council would like you to think about, to nominate for the Council Good Citizens’Award. If you know of some one whom, you feel, deserves to be celebrated for the work they do for Horsforth, then please contact the Town Clerk. He can be contacted, Monday to Friday 10 am to 12.30pm, at the office below the Library or by phone on 0113 2580988, for a nomination form. The council continues its cycle of meetings. Most of the committees meet about every 6 weeks, apart from the Planning Committee, which meets every month. The Planning Committee discuss applications for new developments, house extensions and appeals to decisions made by Leeds City Council. Any concerns and objections are forwarded to Leeds City Council Planning Department to form part of the decision making process. The Planning Committee looks Licensing applications and makes comments where appropriate. The committee also monitor major issues in Horsforth, such as prospective
large developments and conservation issues. The committee also has contact with local residents groups, Horsforth Civic Society, and other interested bodies. Planning meetings are currently moving from paper applications to electronic copies, and so are literally moving with the times! When ever you have a chance to take your Summer break, enjoy the change of activity this will bring! Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council

St Mary’s School of Sanctuary
Pupils from St Mary’s Primary Horsforth came together with refugees and councillors from across the city at an event to celebrate Refugee Week. Each year, Refugee Week is the opportunity to look at the contribution of people who have come to Leeds seeking safety and to recognise the achievements and contribution they have made. St Mary’s joined was awarded ‘School of Sanctuary status’, in recognition of the work done to make the school welcoming to children seeking safety. Councillor Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council deputy leader, said, “It was a great experience to host a Refugee Week event in the Civic Hall. To see people who came as refugees many years ago now contributing so much to life in Leeds, as well as more recent arrivals talking about the welcome they have received. “Of course there remains so much more to do
Slabs Stolen Members of the public are being asked to be vigilant after a spate of thefts of Yorkstone from around Leeds. With Horsforth and Cookridge having its fair share of traditional paving, residents are asked to keep a watch for any suspicious behavior. Over the last 12 months Leeds City Council has received nearly 300 calls to report stolen or missing Yorkstone slabs from footpaths in the city. Councillor Richard Lewis, executive board member for development and the economy, said: “There have been numerous incidents of Yorkstone being stolen from locations across Leeds. Each theft costs the council money and causes disruption to local people. Where possible we will replace like for like but we currently have no new Yorkstone flags which makes this task almost impossible”. Anyone who suspects Yorkstone is being stolen should report the incident to the council or the police.
The Horsforth Gathering Once again the Horsforth Charity Committee is funding the Horsforth Gathering. This is a tea party and entertainment for the over 75’s of Horsforth. This year’s event is being staged as usual at Trinity & All Saints on Tuesday the 23rd August.
Pupils from St Mary's primary in Horsforth with Cllr Gruen (far left)".
– both globally and locally – but Refugee Week really gives us the opportunity to look honestly about how we’re doing. And to celebrate not just refugees, but a celebration of all of the people across Leeds who continue to provide the warm Leeds welcome to those who most need it.”
Unfortunately this is likely to be the last such event the Committee can put on due to the economic climate affecting funding. Our next fund raising event will be a Ceilidh on Saturday 17th September 2011 at St Margaret’s Hall. Invitations for this year’s event will be sent out early in July to eligible pensioners on our list. If you haven’t received your invitation by the 22nd July and you are over 75 and live in Horsforth please contact Sheila@horsforthcharity.org.uk or call: 01132 583282 where you can also order tickets for the Ceilidh. Invest in energy With energy suppliers planning price hikes of up to19% over the next year, energy for your home or business is now becoming a considerable expense. This doesn’t have to be the case – you can now produce your own energy and get paid for it! Solec-UK, who are based in Horsforth have 25 years experience of working in the domestic and commercial industry. Partners Robert Wilmot and Michael Carrick told us “the installation of of Solar PV Panels makes complete sense in today’s world. Not only do you reduce your carbon footprint and avoid price hikes by generating your own electricity, but you can also make returns by selling surplus energy back to the national grid with the government sponsored Feed In Tariff scheme (FIT)”. Installation now can guarantee income for the next 25 years and returns of up to 12% are far more attractive than many other investments. The FIT scheme payments will be reduced for
installations after April 2012, so now is the time to sign up. As experienced contractors, Robert & Michael can design, supply and install the system quickly, professionally and with the minimum of hassle. Solec also provides a wide variety of electrical services for the domestic and commercial sector and are accredited by the NAPIT, MCS, REAL and Trustmark schemes, which ensure the company must adhere to high standards. Conservatory Clean Richard Glendinning of Conservatory Clean wanted to find a way to improve the look of the UPVC in his property without spending a fortune on replacing his conservatory, windows, facias and soffits. “Everything looked green, tired and old” he told us. The problem was, without spending thousands and going through the hassle of replacement there didn’t seem to be another way. Not to be beaten, Richard developed a method, which was so successful he now offers a service to clients all over Yorkshire. Richard told us: “Using our specialist, biodegradable cleaning solution we can remove all ingrained dirt and stains from UPVC, also moss and algae buildup from your conservatory roof. We don’t use harmful solvents that can damage UPVC and also discolour frames. After using our solution all the frames are washed down we then buff all your frames by hand leaving them looking brand

new”. Richard’s system is also highly effective on solar panels – which need to be maintained to achieve maximum output of solar energy. “Cleaner panels mean cheaper bills” added Richard.
“Everything looked green, tired and old” The Conservatory Clean service doesn’t stop there, using specialist equipment they can also tackle gutters, patios, swimming pool covers and driveways – including block paving and Yorkshire stone. The company is locally based and offers free survey and quote at a time to suit you. If you’re thinking of replacing UPVC in your home, give Conservatory Clean a call for a free quote and advice – it could save you a small fortune. Youth Developing at Hall Park Hall Park Cricket club’s under-17s and under-15s have had some indifferent form since the start of the season with some memorable wins and positive performances. The under-17s experienced great wins over last season’s league winners Old Leos as well as dismissing Pool with a comfortable 9 wicket victory. However losing twice to Adel in league and cup defeat at the hands ofwhilst rivals Horsforth were hard to take for Simon Barraclough’s lads. Captain Ali Walshaw’s outstanding form will have pleased everyone at the club though, notching up two 50’s and now gaining invaluable experience in the Hall Park First XI.
Fairweather Finish as League Champions!
The under-15s led by coaches Faheem Bedford and Alex Postle have also struggled with consistency but have secured wins against Pool, Olicanian and Woodhouse so far this season. Alistair Shaw’s 50 and Matthew Bell’s incredible five wickets for nine runs in just four overs with the ball were as Hall Park dominated at Woodhouse. The side lost at home to Pool and their first away match at Green Lane but can take solace in performances so far in the season. Correction! Last month we reported that in the 3rd team match between Horsforth Cricket Club and Hall Park Cricket Club, Horsforth came out the winners. We’re glad to put the record straight – the match ended 175 – 8 from 40 overs in favour of Hall Park.
Manager Martin Woods commented that ahead of the 2010/2011 season; “I was hoping for us just to compete in every game last season and finish as high up the table as possible. As the season progressed, with the strength and quality of our squad, I felt more and more confident that we could finish top and take the title.” With pre-season training already in its beginnings, the players and manager are hoping to hit the ground running for the new season with friendlies already in the pipeline for the black and green side.
Having won the Leeds Combination league last season, Horsforth Fairweather will now look to build on the foundations and mount an assault on this year’s title. A late decision to switch leagues, changing from the Whafedale Triangle to the Leeds Combination brought much deliberation at the club, however to be crowned champions at the first time of asking proved the change was the best move for the club. CoveredMagazine
As the successful Horsforth side prepare to go into the new season Woods said, “Primarily I just want the team to go out and enjoy playing. The passion and desire in the matches will reflect where the club finish this year.” Fairweather have been running for over 30 years and under the helm of Woods, have a side that look keen to fight on all fronts and take every match to their opponents. They are also keen for any sponsorship for the season and hope to generate interest from local businesses.

A Night to Remember for TASC Badminton Club The badminton club celebrated its 30th birthday last month and organiser Sylvia Sellers described it as ‘truly a night to remember’ with more than 50 club players both old and new attending.
With a perfect balance of eating, reminiscing and playing the night ebbed and flowed with ease with laughs and joy aplenty from start to finish.
Bubbly and enthusiastic as always, Sylvia beamed with smiles for the entire night -catching up with ex-players some of whom she hadn’t seen for 24 years! While others who hadn’t been in touch for 15 years were there as well.
An end of evening speech was warming and rounded things off nicely as Sylvia and Graham gave their thanks to each other and all members over the club’s 30 year history. With special thanks going to Sarah Studds and her fantastic team at Trinity Fitness.
The reunion was a huge success with so many faces at the Leeds Trinity University College Sports Centre, rolling back the years and sharing their own nostalgic memories from the past throughout the night.
The evening was one which will never be forgotten by all at TASC Badminton, who’ll now look to their next celebration reunion, hopefully in the near future.
Mag Appearance Inspires Mabb
It has been a mixed month for Horsforth Cricket Club's various teams, with some excellent wins and personal performances alongside some disappointing results. The 1st Team only managed one win in June, although that was a superb victory away at New Rover. Leading wicket taker Andrew Robinson took 5-36 in that game and Aussie Adam Mabb cracked an unbeaten 80 to see Horsforth home by 5 wickets. Adam, obviously inspired by his appearance on the front the last issue of Covered, has had a great month with the bat, making scores in excess of 80 three times for the 1st & Twenty20 sides.
As for Horsforth's other teams, the 3rd XI clinched their first win of the season against Upper Wharfedale, thanks to Ben Wainwright's excellent 7-15 on his comeback following serious injury. Our Under 17 side's challenge for the title has sadly foundered with back-to-back defeats but the Team of the Moment is the Twenty20 Evening league side, captaind by Peter Lawrence, who have gone top of the table and look well-set for the end of season play-offs.
Horsforth 2nd Team had been hitting some form with 3 wins out of 4 before losing at Knaresborough at the end of June. Highlights of this run include Matthew Wainwright's breathtaking century in the defeat of So with fingers crossed for some good weather, there's high-flying Bilton and the demolition of Collingham in a still plenty of exciting cricket ahead at Horsforth CC this game where all 10 opposition wickets where taken by season! Horsforth St. Margaret’s Tournament Report On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June, Horsforth St. Margaret’s JFC hosted their annual tournament. The forecasted torrential rain held off for both days of the 6-a-side tournament which was held at the Lawnswood YMCA playing fields. A number of teams from the local area such as Farsley Celtic, Guiseley and Thackley, to name a few, turned up to show their support. Horsforth St. Margaret’s won in two of the age categories: the Under 8s and Under 14s boy’s
Yarnbury to Build on Successful Season
tournaments. A number of Bradford teams were also successful in the competition with Bradford Park Avenue taking the Under 10s whilst the Under 12s was won by Campion and Albion Sports took the Under 13s title. The Under 16s boy’s competition was won by Guiseley. In the girl’s competition Hemsworth were champions of the Under 11s and the Under 12s was won by Boldon. Finally, Gomersal won the Under 13s girls title beating Horsforth in the final and Sunderland Girls were victorious in the Under 15s section. This year’s Yarnbury Beer Festival also takes place at the ground on 29th – 31st July with over 40 real Yorkshire ales and ciders on offer.
For more information visit Yarnbury RFC enjoyed a successful season with the 1stXI, www.yarnburybeerfestival.co.uk/ Hornets XI, ‘B’ XI and the Vets having some creditable results over the course of the season. The first XI suffered a huge blow early on in the season, struggling to get going and succumbing to a heavy 60-0 defeat away at Barnsley in their first game. Three additional loses in a row put the lads in an ominous position but their form after that was excellent including a run of 10 straight wins, which started with a imperious 52-5 victory over Skipton at home. The Hornets XI had a much better opening to their league campaign which saw them win their first three match-ups with a 57-17 win over Morley 3rds being by the biggest winning deficit. However a crushing 40-0 away loss at York and an agonising 38-36 defeat at the hands of Moortown were particularly hard to take for the Hornets’ side. For the Yarnbury ‘B’ XI, it was a magical season which saw them lose just three games all season and racking up an impressive 16 triumphs which even saw them close in on a ton, demolishing Hemsworth 92-7 in an outstanding display.
CAPTION COMPETITION
WIN £25! Rugby
League is reputedly the tougher of the two codes, with women playing every bit as hard as the men. So, why did these three players get a fit of the giggles during the match between Leeds Akkies and Boissière Nantes at the Old Modernians Sports Ground on 5 June? Might something have been said by the Nantes player (centre) or either of the two Leeds players trying to relieve her of the ball? Suggestions please to: Caption, Covered. Hillside. Leeds.LS11 8ND or email: chris@covered-magazine.net
With the club having a strong season across all levels, it will be important to maintain and improve performances in order to stay competitive in the 2011/2012 campaign and hopefully provide Horsforth with the best rugby union side in West Yorkshire, in both results and set-up. CoveredMagazine
(Photo: Ivor Hughes)
The Vets also secured maximum points more often then they lost or drew and will definitely look back on the 75-5 success over Halifax Vandals at home as a major highlight from the 2010/2011 season.

Old Modernians
The Old Modernians Sports Club - on Otley Old Road, Cookridge - is one of Leeds' hidden sporting and social club treasures. Officially, they field representative teams in the sports of cricket, football and rugby (both codes). And with both ladies' and junior sides. Unofficially, they also have close ties with activities as diverse as bowls, cycling, golf and motoring. Last month they hosted a return visit by one of France's best known amateur rugby league sides, Boissière Nantes. Here are a few shots from the matches between the respective First and Ladies's XIII teams. The Old Mods won both. Look forward to further coverage of Old Mods, and all of their teams, in future issues of Covered.
