Really Useful Guide

onwards and upwards! Hello and a warm welcome to readers old and new from all at the Covered team – we’re delighted to be merging our title with The Really Useful Guides and reaching thousands of new households with our monthly blend of hyper-local news, views and features – all supported by the area’s best businesses of course. I’m sure readers will join me in extending thanks to Chris Dance who steered the good ship ‘Really Useful’ for the last nine years. Chris has stood aside as publisher and we wish him the very best of luck for the future. Dave Smith is staying with the new look publication so please continue to contact him with any advertising requirements. You can expect some changes to your Really Useful Guide over the coming months including a name change to Covered. Covered has been publishing magazines in Leeds for years now and, having merged with RUG, now boast the biggest monthly distribution in the city. 90,000 copies per month in total. You can expect to read more local news as our team spends time out in the community; attending, supporting and reporting your events and activities. If you have an event you’d like some exposure for, just let me know and I’ll do my best to offer some support. Other changes will include new reader-friendly listings for non-profits and charities, features on fashion, hair & beauty, gardening, property, pets, arts & entertainment and much, much more. We’ll also include giveaways and cash prize competitions – everyone likes a freebie don’t they? Try and ‘Find Sid’ this month for your chance to win £100. If you’re a party person then there are two tickets for the city’s hottest New Year event up for grabs on Pg2. If there is something you’d like to see in the new look magazine then don’t be shy, let me know! You can also share your views with others in the community by writing to our Readers’ Letters page – there’s £10 up for grabs if you’re the Star Letter. I hope you will welcome the changes to your local magazine and I look forward to providing you with a quality publication for many years to come. The deadline for editorial submissions and advertising for the next edition is 22/11/13. Until next month,

Chris Barnham Editor

Councillor’s Comments: Chapel Allerton Councillors want residents to know about a fantastic scheme Leeds City Council is offering to help people get active and keep fit “Leeds Let’s Get Active”. There are lots of activities happening in North East Leeds: Scott Hall Leisure Centre (Scott Hall Road, LS7 3DT) has daily free swimming and gym sessions that anyone can attend. This is a great way to learn about the facilities on offer at the centre and other activities on offer throughout Leeds. The current sessions run up to December 2013, but there will be other sessions at a later date. If you are interested in attending at your Council leisure centre, you can go at the following times:

Free Swimming

Free Gym

Mondays – 2.30 – 3.30pm

Tuesdays – 2.30 – 3.30pm

Wednesdays – 2.35 – 3.30pm

Thursdays – 2.30 – 3.30pm

Fridays – 2.15 – 3.30pm

Saturdays – 1.00 – 2.00pm

Sundays – 11.00 – 11.55am

In order to attend any activity, you will need to apply for a Leeds Let’s Get Active card. All the details on how to apply and other activities across the city can be found at www.leedsletsgetactive.co.uk. You can also call 0113 3950160 or email leeds.lets.get. active@leeds.gov.uk to find out more information. If you have a Leeds Card or Breeze Card, or you have Bodyline membership, the website has advice on what you need to do.

Councillor’s Comments: Alwoodley The Dark Nights Return? You may know about the decision of the Council to switch off one street light in twelve during the hours of midnight to 5.30a.m. Some of us have big reservations about the whole idea but at present there are no plans for anything that affects Alwoodley. The exercise across the city will save a million pounds but this is over ten years and the set-up costs will eat up the first three years savings at least. If there are ever any specific proposals for us, we will let you know. So to the edited highlights of recent weeks. The wildflower areas on King Lane are being taken up, but they will be back next spring and the beds will be twice as big; the alternate week bin collections are

still planned to start on November 11; people from outside the ward appear to think that the High Ash estate is part of the Grammar School car park and we wish they wouldn’t; well done to Alwoodley Parish Council, who seem to have won the Battle of the Village Green. I still have almost a thousand pounds left of my annual LCC fund to be allocated to Alwoodley voluntary groups or charities. It’s your money, not mine, and at present it is sitting in a council bank account. I suspect there are still small groups that have never asked for help - please get in touch if £100-£200 would help. 5

Really Useful Guide

Councillors Comments: Fabian Hamilton the MP Moortown for Leeds North East Now the nights have drawn in and winter is on the way, it really limits the activities that young people can take part in. Many readers will play an important role in the local community by running after-school clubs and activities, providing a range of activities for young people to get involved in. The council is always looking for new and innovative ways to be able to offer support to the individuals, groups and organisations who run these vital services. If you provide community or voluntary activities for children between the ages of 8 and 17, you may be eligible for funding through the East North East Leeds Activities Fund provided by the area committee. To be eligible for consideration for this funding, your group must be non-profit and you need to be registered with the Breeze Culture Network. You can easily register for this by visiting https://culturenetwork.breezeleeds.org/home An application form and further information on this can be obtained by emailing east.north.east@leeds.gov.uk Finally, the preparations for Christmas are now well underway and many of you may have already seen the Christmas lights being put up in the city centre. We are delighted to announce again this year that residents in Moortown and Meanwood will be treated to not one, but two local Christmas lights switch-on’s. The Moortown switch-on will take place on 20th November and the Meanwood event will be on 25th November.

Of all the issues that constituents raise with me at my advice surgeries, housing is the one that outweighs all others. Put simply, the reality is that people who cannot afford to buy their own home have almost a zero chance of being able to rent a council house or one from a housing association. Virtually none have been built in this area for years. The only alternative is the private rented sector where rents are often high and accommodation poor. I believe that good housing for everyone is a characteristic of a just, humane and civilised society and I want a fundamental change of policy on house building. It would be good for those in need of a home and good for the economy creating tens of thousands of new jobs. Here in the Leeds North East constituency, a flying start could me made by building on land in Meanwood formerly occupied by the now closed and demolished Miles Hill Primary School. More new council houses could be built on this one site than have been built throughout Leeds in the last ten years. We must ensure that land where houses can be sensibly sited does not lie idle and that Councils are empowered to get on with the job of building. The growing practice of converting houses into separately let rooms or studios and the construction of micro apartments is symptomatic of a national crisis in housing provision. Years ago Leeds used to have an enviable reputation for being the city where there was a genuine choice between buying a house or renting a council house and there is no reason why this cannot happen again.

Planting shrubs with berries will brighten the garden and encourage wildlife.

There is still time to finish planting daffodils, crocus and other small spring bulbs, as these need to be growing now. Next comes the tulips, plant in groups of five at a depth of 8”, which will allow them to naturalise over the next few years. These may be inter-planted with wallflowers, winter pansies or violas to keep the beds looking interesting. Foliage and berries are essential at this time of the year, to provide colour in the garden. Japanese acers are slow growing, with their leaves turning yellow, orange and red. Similar to the smoke bush Cotinus, Euonymus and a number of other shrubs. There has been a good crop of bright yellow and red berries on the pyracantha shrubs, also on the Rowan trees which can be white, yellow, pink, red and orange. There are a number of other shrubs with berries, so look around and choose one to brighten your garden and feed the birds as well. Prepare to take all your tender pots under cover, checking they are not harbouring any disease or

insects before housing them. Then have your fleece, bubble wrap or plant covers handy, ready to insulate them when the first frost warnings arrive. Do not lift your dahlias until the first frosts have blackened the leaves, then take them inside and store them upside down for two weeks to dry out – followed by storage in a frost free area in dry peat. Garden chrysanthemums should also be lifted and kept in moist soil, ready for taking cuttings next year. This is an ideal time to plant bare root fruit stock, roses and perennials, as the soil is still warm enough for them to establish their roots before winter arrives. Prepare the site well, incorporating organic matter if necessary.

What our advertisers say:

What our readers say:

"We advertised in the first edition of Covered and the response was fantastic. We still advertise to this day and every advert brings more and more customers to our busy garage.

“After a life time of working in newspapers, your little gift through my letterbox is both welcome and awaited!

We've found Covered to be by far the most productive means of promoting our business to the local community - I would have no hesitation in recommending it to others" Phil Leeks M.D.Town Garage, Featherbank Lane, Horsforth.

Great local news content, beautiful quality glossy paper and its A5 size makes it perfect to read anywhere. The adverts have become my Bible, I refer to them for everything, and I have found brilliant, local, reliable contractors and lots of amazing deals, which have saved me money and give a feel good factor of supporting local businesses. I also share my mag, it is read from cover to cover first and then passed on to family who might need this or that, or simply enjoy "COVERED". Really Useful Guide

Property Matters: WINTER CHECKLIST It’s no coincidence that during winter’s harsh months you’re far more likely to need the services of tradespeople. Frost, rain, wind and snow are enemies of bricks and mortar. Trades-people tend to be at their busiest over winter too, so you might not get quick service should you have an urgent need. Here’s Covered’s Really Useful Guide for ‘winter-proofing’ your home, inside and out!

OUTDOORS Get a roof survey: If your roof leaked last year, the likelihood is that it will leak again this year - it won’t have magically self-repaired. Leaks can be cured by something as simple as replacing a tile, but left unremedied will create bigger problems. Call in an expert to survey and sort it.

Look after your gutters: Be it a bungalow or a threestorey town house, debris will find its way into your gutters. Remove sticks, moss and leaves regularly. If you don’t, then you risk water build-up, or worse still, ice, which may cause water to seep down walls. Gutter Guards (available from most DIY stores) will alleviate this problem for you. Take care of trees: Snow, ice and wind are all bad news for weak trees or fragile branches. If a tree topples, it could fall on your car, your house or injure a passing person. If you suspect your tree needs attention, don’t leave it until the high winds arrive – get an arborist or tree care specialist in to take a look. Holes & gaps: Use expandable foam to seal large gaps in brickwork (take a look around pipes, for example). Check around window and doorframes, and fill with caulking if needed.

INDOORS Pipes: Ever had a burst pipe? You’re lucky if not – the consequences can verge on catastrophic and resultantly require flooring, ceilings and furniture to be replaced. Keep the heating on low if frost is forecast and make sure you know where the stop tap is. Insulate: There are many initiatives offered to homeowners who want to wrap-up their homes. Take advantage of this opportunity. Add extra insulation to lofts/attics. Well-insulated cellars and garages will also keep pipes from freezing. Check smoke detectors: This is a must-do all year round but an increase in domestic fires during winter means extra vigilance is essential. Make sure your detector is working. Install a carbon monoxide detector too if you don’t have one already – better to be safe than sorry. Service your boiler: Boilers should be serviced at least once a year to make sure that they are safe and

functioning optimally. Have your heating system looked over too, and check pipes for cracks and leaks. Chimney: If you’re lucky enough to have an open fire, then an annual sweeping is essential. An unswept chimney is a potential fire hazard. What’s more, when it comes to Christmas Day you’ll want to ensure that Santa makes his descent without getting too dirty! As always, the best advice and solutions will come from local independent traders and retailers. If you are undertaking any work on your home it is important that you have professional advice.

Inkwell’s Saturday Café – “Supporting Wellbeing through Creativity” Inkwell is part of Leeds Mind, an independent charity whose aim is to enable individuals with mental health problems to flourish. It operates in refurbished premises in Potternewton Lane, which used to be the Shoulder of Mutton pub, traditionally the hub of the local community.

Regular visitors to the craft café enjoying Saturday lunch

A major feature of the operation is the Saturday Café, maintaining the pub’s role at the heart of Leeds 7. It was established in November 2012 and opens every weekend to provide a unique space that encourages creativity and offers nutritious food. The team is currently working hard to open on Sundays to provide a safe, creative and inviting space to enjoy all weekend. The food is delicious, healthy and colourful. All dishes are freshly prepared by a talented chef and trained volunteers. They work closely with local suppliers and small businesses to offer the best in local produce, and use fresh vegetables and herbs grown in Inkwell’s garden by The Conservation Volunteers. They love good coffee too; Union Roasted provides the best quality coffee bean and has extremely high ethical standards.

enjoying the buzz and the food in a truly happy and inclusive atmosphere. And, of course, every meal, craft or cup of coffee you buy contributes to supporting and funding the organisation which has such a positive impact.

Also on offer is a range of craft workshops and activities. Whatever their level of skill, all users can participate and nurture their artistic side. Visiting on a Saturday, you will find local families

Inkwell is at 31, Potternewton Lane, LS7 3LW. Telephone: 0113 3070108 email: inkwell@leedsmind.org.uk The craft café is open on Saturdays from 10am – 4pm

Alwoodley Arts Group Alwoodley’s Community Hall is just that. Opened in 1949, it was built from predominantly “secondhand material”. Nowadays we call it reclamation, but at the time it was, quite simply, post-WWII thrift and shortage of materials. Volunteers, many of them strangers at the outset, completed as much work as was possible. Notes from the time record the excavation of the first drainage trench as being their largest task. Alwoodley Art Group is one of the clubs that formed early in the association’s history. Going for 51 years, it now has 41 members aged from teens to retired. They meet every Thursday evening at 7.30 for a rotation of demonstrations, instruction, workshops and practical work. There are two important exhibitions, spring and autumn, when members put their best works

“You Can See the Sea” Alwoodley Art Group’s contact and webmaster Tony Driver puts the finishing touches to one of his oils destined for the club’s Autumn Show (16-17 November).

forward for viewing and purchase by the general public. This year the autumn exhibition is on 16 and 17 November with a ticket only, though still free, preview on the Friday evening. Alwoodley Community Hall, 60 The Avenue LS17 7NZ. Alwoodley Art Group – Tony Driver 0113 225 1546.

Booting at St Gemma’s There are two sides to St Gemma’s Hospice in Moortown. The first is of course medical. Yorkshire’s largest hospice had over 600 in-patient admissions last year. In addition to in-patient care, St Gemma’s also has a busy out-patient department and teams of nurses making thousands of home visits and social workers and counsellors providing wider support to families. With around 250 employees and 600 volunteers. The second side is the one with which the general public is more familiar – raising funds to support the medical side. Most in evidence are the twentytwo charity shops located throughout Leeds. But the fundraising doesn’t end there. There are more than a dozen physical challenges organised by St Gemma’s where people can raise funds with sponsored activities such as dancing, swimming or sky diving. And, typically with two events each month, St Gemma’s own buildings host a variety of boot sales and fashion, vintage and art sales. The last boot sale of the year was on 19 October with hundreds of visitors searching for bargains among the 60 stalls. The next indoor boot is on 25 January with a Christmas Market on 6/7 December. Their next Vintage Fair is on 16/17 December. Details Amy Middlemast on 218 5580.

Catering for all tastes. St Gemma’s Hospice is supported by over 600 volunteers.

There was no shortage of vintage bargains at the October indoor boot. St Gemma’s next vintage fair proper is on 16 and 17 December.

Alwoodley Parish Council Many people have admired the beautiful wildflower bed on King Lane. This was part of a three year pollination experiment involving several universities and was created and planted by LCC Parks and Countryside Dept. Because it has proved to be so popular the Parish Council has decided to fund more of these wildflower beds around the Parish. We are currently looking at suitable locations – contact us if you’d like to nominate an area. Thanks to a grant from the LCC Wellbeing Fund, there will be some festive lights displayed on lamp posts by the King Lane shops and The Avenue. We have been advised that the switch on date will be 2nd December. In addition, there will be tree lights in the large tree by the playground throughout the winter months. We hope they will bring some cheer to the long winter evenings. The allotments application has now reached the long and tortuous planning stage (after the long and tortuous earlier stages). We are sure that eventually

Getting into character on day three of six weeks of rehearsals – Jacob James Beswick (Mowgli) and Andrew French (Shere Khan)

Into the Jungle at West Yorkshire Playhouse To panto or not to panto? If you are looking for a family Christmas treat with a difference, head for West Yorkshire Playhouse. Running for eight weeks from 30 November is an adaptation of Kipling’s Jungle Book unique to WYP. Adapted by Rosanna Lowe, directed and choreographed by multi award-winning Liam Steel (of Les Misérables fame) and with original music by Niraj Chag, it is a fastmoving and dynamic production using physical theatre, dance and puppetry. Mowgli’s journey brings him into contact with friendly and fearsome characters, brought vividly to life. Watched over by a kindly panther and a clumsy (but well-intentioned) bear, he confronts a boa-constrictor, greedy dancing monkeys and, finally, the bloodthirsty tiger Shere Khan. Each encounter teaches him something about the world, other people and himself – and how to build on his gifts and qualities and curb his dangerous tendency to over-confidence.

There is a cast of twelve, including Andrew French as Shere Khan and Jacob James Beswick as Mowgli. Neither is a stranger to Leeds; Jacob’s sister lives in Armley and Andrew was here six months ago in the world première of Refugee Boy, based on the novel by Benjamin Zephaniah. Both are happy to be back in Yorkshire. Andrew told Covered, “the fish and chips are the best in the country – and people here even say thank you to the bus driver!” This Jungle Book is very much aimed at families. There is plenty of music and dance, but Disney it is not. The recommendation is for 7-year-olds and up as the story is very close to Kipling’s original, tracing Mowgli’s path to manhood. It is a tale of rites of passage, of a coming of age, fiercer and edgier than the softer film version. What about younger children? The Playhouse is also staging the well-loved Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs, running for six weeks from 6 December. All the giggles will be there in this version, along with song, live music and puppetry against a magical set. Information and booking on 0113 213 7700 or wyp.org.uk
