Busy, as ever, the Covered team have made no fewer than 40 visits to community events over the last month! That’s some going for an independent publisher like Covered. It is this commitment to the local community that sets us apart – we attend, support and report on community initiatives, groups, clubs and societies. Other publications copy and paste press releases and run stock photographs – from a reader perspective, where’s the interest in reading something third or fourth hand and most likely seen elsewhere? This is the last edition we will distribute before Christmas so I’d like to take the opportunity to wish all readers a happy and healthy close to the year. Our next edition will be with you in the second week of January. The deadline for editorial submissions and advertising for the next edition is 20/12/13. Until next month, have a wonderful festive break.

Alwoodley Parish Council Alwoodley Parish Council arranged for a new finger post at Five Lane Ends to replace one that was removed many years ago. The post shows directions to local villages and Eccup Reservoir. Within a few days of the post being erected someone decided they didn't want everyone to know the way to the reservoir along Eccup Moor Road and they have carefully, but crudely blacked out the lettering on both sides of one of the five fingers. Eccup Moor Road is a public road, although the actual road to the dam a mile further on is not a highway and, unless you have special permission, you can only walk, ride or cycle along it. West Yorkshire Police have been informed about the defacing of the sign. Many of you have seen the tree lights on King Lane and we have had a lot of positive feedback already showing that the lights are proving to be very popular. They look stunning and we hope that next year we are able to have lights in other trees around the Parish. Leeds City Council has given us permission to name the field at the junction of The Avenue and King Lane Alwoodley Village Green. This land is safe from development as it has five levels of protection including being a site of Ecological or Geological

Importance and forming part of the Meanwood Valley Trail. The Parish Council is hoping to improve and enhance this area over the next few years. Our application for the World War One Commemorative Flowerbed with sundial and bench to be situated on King Lane is now with LCC and we hope they will approve our plans. Our next meetings will be on Monday 13th January – Planning Committee at 6.30 and Parish Council at 7.30. We wish all residents an enjoyable festive season and a very happy 2014. It’s Panto Time at Leeds City Varieties! This season Leeds City Variety Hall’s vehicle for their winning rock ‘n’ roll panto formula is Peter Rowe’s Jack and the Beanstalk. Running until Sunday 12 January 2014 with lots of audience interaction and heaps of corny gags, the show is also peppered with classic pop and soul hits from the sixties and beyond. The versatile actormusicians perform all numbers live on stage. Dame Dolly Durden is played by Simon Nock, perhaps the most versatile. Simon’s CV includes numerous roles on the classical stage, in popular TV series and in cinema. A baritone singer, he also plays clarinet and saxophone. Simon is joined on stage by dancer, singer and multiinstrumental Joe Vetch (Jack) and mezzo-soprano and highly skilled trombonist Rachael Garnett (Jill). Interestingly, Rachael graduated in 2010 with a BA degree in “Actor Musicianship” and specialises in musical theatre. The audience can look forward to a quality performance.

The multi-talented Joe Vetch, Simon Nock and Rachael Garnett promise to have audiences rocking in the aisles at Leeds City Varieties’ Jack and the Beanstalk: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto – running until 12 January photo Ivor Hughes

The Good Old Days Last month in Covered Areas ABC (NW Leeds) we featured a subsidised food stall supporting the 1921 miners’ strike. This month we are looking back at the Leeds’ annual “Family Allowance Toy Fairs”, also known as “Christmas Toy Bonanzas”. The picture shown was taken on 10 December 1982 at Wykebeck School, Gipton. A similar fair was sometimes held on the same day at the Henry Barran Centre nearby. People donated toys, sometimes second hand and sometimes from wholesalers, enabling local parents to buy toys for pennies rather than pounds (Family Allowance is an old name for Child Benefit).

Covered magazine would be delighted to publicise any in need of support.

The fairs appear short-lived, closing in the mid eighties. Why might that have been? Are there any equivalents these days, or won’t today’s kids settle for anything less than the latest sports kit or electronic gadgets? At this time of year, toy banks are almost as important as food banks. Indeed, the provision of one might relieve pressure on the other.

Do you have any old pictures you’d like to share? Perhaps you’d like other readers to help you fill in some of the detail. Please confirm that the image is copyright free and let us know if you have any objection to it being forwarded to Leeds Library and Information Services for inclusion on their LEODIS website

Councillors Comments: Chapel Allerton The festive season is now upon us in Chapel Allerton and this was marked in style at the Chapel Allerton Christmas Lights Switch On last month. We would like to thank everyone who came along to see us and Ronnie the Rhino turn on the lights, despite the bad weather. It did begin to snow towards the end of the night and there were plenty of exciting acts that performed on the night, including the Memphis Cruisers band and the Chapel Allerton and St Matthew’s Primary School Choirs, so we are sure everyone enjoyed themselves. The turning on of the Christmas lights has marked the beginning of the festive period in Chapel Allerton, and we would like to wish everyone season’s greetings and all the best for the New Year.

The organisers put on a fantastic march through the city to raise awareness of women’s rights and around 150 women took part. The event ended at Leeds Metropolitan University where there were stalls from groups including Women’s Health Matters and the Leeds Met Women’s Committee. The cake sale, badges and raffle raised £121.25 which was spilt between Women’s Health Matters and Reclaim the Night’s Christmas Present appeal for children refugees. Reclaim the Night does a fantastic job promoting women’s rights throughout Leeds and we look forward to their future events. There are many ways to enjoy the garden over winter

Your roses should have finished flowering by now, so strip off all the old leaves and pick any off the ground which have already fallen. This will stop any blackspot and rust bacteria from overwintering in the soil, and infecting the new growth next year. Inspect regularly your stored plants, dahlias, chrysanthemums, gladioli etc, treating any small signs of decay with sulphur powder, alternatively disposing of the item completely. Potatoes in store should be checked for signs of blight, disposing of any which show signs of dark patches, sunken areas and grey mould. Parsnips and leeks still in the ground should remain in good condition, and will taste sweeter after each frost. If you are unfamiliar with the conditions for any plants received over Christmas, it is worth checking in a book or on Google. Cyclamen for example like it light and cool, where many other plants require normal room temperature and regular misting.

As you start to dream of spring and summer, start to make a list of your favourite seeds – including plants and shrubs – making a plan of how you would like to see your garden in the sun. The sowing season will be with us sooner than you think, so order early and keep them handy for when the day comes. This especially applies to vegetable seeds, were we will be sowing small quantities in two week batches to spread the harvest and avoid large unusable quantities. Enjoy your Christmas, look forward to a wonderful New Year, and if you have any spare time on your hands – clean and sharpen all your garden tools.

Really Useful Guide

Readers’ Letters Star Letter Is Covered magazine a disappointment? To the Editor I don’t often contact organisations but I was so disappointed when I received the latest edition of The Really Useful Guide to Alwoodley area that I had to express my opinion. I have used the advertisements in The Really Useful Guide on several occasions - and always looked forward to Councillor Harrand’s page because he is our local Councillor. As often happens when organisations amalgamate the quality deteriorates. In this case there is so much information crammed into the available space that it becomes a mess. The print is so small that I (and I have very good sight) cannot read it without a magnifying glass. Because several areas are covered much information is irrelevant - and Councillor Harrand has been squashed to bits. I cannot believe how small the print is in order to include all the information you wish to impart - but I’m sure lots of people cannot easily read it. Readers lose interest with so much crammed information. Incidentally I attend St Paul’s RC Church and the information is incorrect. You have 2 entries for St Paul’s Church in Alwoodley and actually they are both the same church. So I bemoan the loss of The Really Useful Guide series of booklets and hope the Covered series does not try to include too much information. Yours Mrs Eileen Ludlow

Editors Response Dear Mrs Ludlow Thank you for your letter. I am sorry to hear about your disappointment, though it gives me an opportunity to clarify some points and reemphasise others. Covered magazine is committed to supporting local community activities and news with original content. It was already doing just that in the communities between Bramley and Adel, and out to Ilkley, before we extended to the communities along the ring road as far as Garforth. I hope you enjoyed our piece about Alwoodley art group in the last issue and Alwoodley singers in this one. The increase to 90,000 copies, delivered as 15,000 in six areas, wasn’t without its problems. RUG and Covered each received multiple notices of some events and that is probably why there was duplicate reference to St Paul’s. Duplication of parish news is less likely to happen in future. Not only will it become easier to spot, we are moving away from publishing what is in effect the duplication of several existing parish newsletters. Parishioners must already be aware of regular services and activities. Our intention is to focus on news or one-off events where the church is the community hub. There will be similar changes to political columns. Covered magazine regularly reports, and often supports, individual town and city councillors’ and MPs’ work in the community. Cllr Barry Anderson’s concerns about planning applications and Fabian Hamilton MP’s support of Oakwood Farmer’s Market and REAP are among many recent examples. Councillors

The Covered

Really Useful Guide remain welcome to let us know what they are doing for their communities. Covered magazine is more likely to report that than be a platform for one-sided local party politics. I have noted your comments about print size but can’t make any promises. Though I am encouraged by your comment about the amount of information contained in the first edition for your area. The three new editions for the communities east of Adel are in fact relatively small in comparison with the three already established in the areas around Pudsey, Horsforth and Ilkley/Otley. Each of the three versions will grow in time, so readers can look forward to reading even more local news features. But we can’t do it without the help and interest of readers, which is why I’m pleased to congratulate you for your letter of the month. Yours sincerely

The sound was excellent and the atmosphere electric. Traffic and parking proved no problem. Friends who’ve been to see Rod Stewart, Elton John and Cirque du Soleil have been equally enthusiastic about the Arena. We’re looking forward to Classical Spectacular. Dave Atkins (By Email)

editor’s note Great plug for Leeds Arena Dave! Do readers have similar or differing experiences? What’s the best venue in Leeds? What about local venues in your area – where would you recommend? Where’s best avoided? Contact us at the usual address (see P3) or email: chris@covered-magazine.net

Chris Barnham, Editor

Dear Editor, I’d like to take this opportunity to comment on how successful I think the Leeds First Direct Arena has been so far. When it was suggested that it should be built in the centre of town, a number of doubts were expressed about the problems there would be with parking and traffic. It was thought that an out of town location would be a better option. Well, I think having it as an integral part of the town centre works very well. I was lucky enough to attend the opening night, the Bruce Springsteen concert, and found it a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We parked away from the Arena, walked up into town for a drink before the concert and found our place inside easily. It’s on a relatively small site, so the accommodation has been achieved through height. Consequently you still feel quite near the stage, which meant we were actually able to see Bruce and the band, rather than looking at a screen as you have to in the big sports arenas.

Tell us what you think! Share your views on any subject with other readers in your community. Let us know your gripes, tell us about great things in your corner of Leeds, point out areas for improvement or share your favorite memories of Leeds. You might even start a debate! Over the last 18 months, the Friends have planted 10,000 daffodil and crocus bulbs along the central reservation on Lidgett Lane outside Moor Allerton Hall Primary School and the shops on Lidgett Lane Parade. This is in addition to 5,000 bulbs planted in autumn 2011 on the Lidgett Lane and Allerton Grange Avenue junction as part of the community led ‘Lidgett Lane Gateway’ initiative. The Friends hope that 15,000 bulbs along Lidgett Lane will help create a warm and welcoming gateway to Allerton Grange Fields this coming spring! Charlotte said “It is great to see local residents come together and support the Friends over the last couple of years. We have even more exciting projects coming up in 2014 which includes installation of new welcome and interpretation board signs at the entrances to the fields, as well as the planting of new trees and hedgerows at Allerton Grange Fields following the recent success in securing the RHS-

Seven Jazz Seven Jazz is an independent promoter of jazz and big band music. Based in Chapel Allerton, it was formed in 2007 and is run by five volunteers. This year they won Jazz Yorkshire’s “Jazz Club of the Year” – a remarkable achievement for an organisation that doesn’t have its own premises or the advantage of being in a city, town or even village centre. The main Seven Jazz venue is Seven Arts at 31 Harrogate Road. They also use Inkwell Café at 31 Potternewton Lane. It was at Inkwell Café that our photographer caught up with organiser Steve Crocker and photographed the Standard Deviation Quartet. Seven Jazz has to use larger venues for their most popular concerts, particularly when featuring big bands such as the nineteen piece Ronnie Bottomley’s Jazz Orchestra. Internationally acclaimed singer Lee Gibson will be appearing with them on 12 December at Leeds Irish Centre on York Road. Then back to Inkwell Café on Sunday afternoon 15 December for Festive Jazz, when a number of the club’s

Let there be light Moortown Community Group had the switching on of their Christmas lights planned very tidily indeed. With a gazebo, Santa and a musician in attendance, sweets for the children and mulled wine and mince pies for the adults. But the skies misbehaved. Strong winds with a mixture of heavy sleet and rain put paid to all but the refreshments – meanwhile causing flash floods from Moortown to the ring road. And the LCC lighting engineer was engaged elsewhere, so the lights were switched on remotely by a timer. It is testimony to MCG’s community spirit that they saw the brighter side.

Moortown Park Many of you will already know that Moortown is to have a park. It has been the wish of local residents for many years that the former Yorkshire Bank Sportsfield should be used for such a purpose and it is possible that work could begin in autumn 2014. In an ideal world, the whole area would have been available for community use. However, the compromise solution is the outline planning permission, now approved by the Secretary of State, given to Scotfield for 29 houses. This includes a requirement to provide a park of 3.2 hectares on 78% of the area, which will then be adopted by Leeds City Council. Moortown Community Group is involved in the discussions about the facilities in the park and details have yet to be finalised. They are likely to include: provision for Moortown Primary School, a wetland area (not a pond) to alleviate drainage problems, entrances from Shadwell Lane and

Allerton Grove/Lime Tree Avenue, play areas for children and toddlers and wildflower beds. The aim will be to create a pleasant, low maintenance family environment and to increase wildlife diversity. Covered will provide regular up-dates as details become available, as will our website moortowncommunitygroup.org

Fabian Hamilton MP The pain of our energy bills Recent price hikes by all the large energy companies are causing anguish and hardship at all levels of society. Some people fear a stark choice between paying for heat or paying for food. Lack of warmth or food in winter months is particularly damaging for elderly people. I am trying to steer clear of the high profile controversy on this issue that is centred around government green levies and the profits of the supply companies. This obscures the fact that there are things that might be done to alleviate the burden on stretched households. As energy is a market driven industry we need to give greater power to customers. At present we are all stuck with not much of a choice between just

six major suppliers and the individual consumer's account carries no great weight. The answer is community bulk purchasing. It is not a new concept but it requires some leadership and I believe that local authorities are in the best position to do this. Basically it would mean that householders would elect to buy their energy from the authority who, armed with the purchasing power of thousands of households, would have the clout to demand cheaper prices from the main suppliers. The local authorities would also be able to explore other sources of energy directly from solar panel owners, generation from refuse burning and even geothermal supplies. In the Victorian era, it was local government that first brought us our public utility services of water, drainage, gas and electricity to the people. We need a revival of such social civic entrepreneurialism and the government legislation to make this possible. Big is not always best.

NEWS FROM SAFE HAVEN Sometimes in the Tempest there is a storm, sometimes there is every indication of a rising trouble which never actually materializes... so why worry when everything is in order and everything has a reason? Let the One who knows do all the thinking for you and sit back and relax. If you venture forward into a mishap aren’t you the one who is to blame or are the sick and needy responsible for their own plight . Whenever need arises someone has got out of bed on the wrong side and fallen at the first hurdle, only to find themselves ill prepared for what they are about to face. Heaven only knows who is to blame but the essence of Goodness has blessed the scene long before the event was even hatched all that time ago …..long long ago in a forest near you, dwelt a fierce wolf who never got on with anyone but himself… he found a way out though! He nestled under a

tree until the storm broke all around him and ventured out in disguise again, to outwit his followers. To be mistaken for himself would’ve been an outrage so he chose to be someone else instead and defied gravity. If you pretend it’s not happening you’re well out of it, if you choose to be recognised for a farthing to a lost child then Heaven blesses you and yours forever. Have a heart and help those around you by giving like never before, go against the tide of … who needs help anyway? They ARE out there … believe me! Til next time…God Bless

Covered Meetup – West Yorkshire Snappers Last summer, Covered magazine photographer Ivor Hughes took a wrong turn and found Leeds Mountain Bikers about to embark on their weekly run. He discovered that LMB is one of around 800 web based social activity groups in the Leeds area and decided to have a peep at some others. Covered magazine is running this as a regular monthly feature. So, what better starting place than West Yorkshire Snappers – a group of around 200 keen amateurs meeting for monthly shoots and comparing notes afterward? The group meets always at 11am on the first Sunday of the month. In November it was a wet Sunday, with only a dozen of the usual twenty or so making it to Ripley, near Harrogate. The idea to photograph the town hall, castle and surrounds was made all the more interesting by the Ripley Guy Fawkes ten mile road race. Plenty of action, colour and mud.

One Harrogate Harrier clearly pleased to see the finishing line

Three West Yorkshire Snappers photographing the finish of Ripley’s Guy Fawkes ten mile run; organiser Ken Clark (compact), Irina Arcas (SLR) and Mike Short (iPad).

Organiser Ken Clark told Covered; “WYS has been going two years. The emphasis is on originality and composition of images. We are dedicated very much to the amateur end of things. Some members use SLRs but others use compacts, iPads and even mobile phones. We’ve had a few professionals along but some have tried to dominate. That’s not what we’re about.” It’s easy to find, and join, West Yorkshire Snappers on meetup.com – would your meetup group like to meet up with Covered magazine?

Leeds Mencap Reaches Out to the Asian Community Sarbjit Kaur, the mother of a young son with learning difficulties, decided to do something to raise awareness among Asian communities by putting Leeds Mencap’s Me2 (mixed ability dance group) in touch with Leeds based SAA-uk Dance Academy (South Asian Arts) – she attends events at both organisations.

A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

The result of Sarbjit’s initiative was a joint venture on 9 November; A Slice of India held at TJ’s Social Club in Woodhouse, Leeds. There, the two dance groups put on a joint performance during the afternoon and evening’s non-stop fundraising celebration of Indian culture. The event also included music and dance workshops, henna artists, face painting, holistic therapies and a variety of food and craft stalls. Guests could also be photographed in front of the Taj Mahal, the evening being rounded off by guests dancing Bollywood style on the dance floor. Leeds Mencap is an independent charity affiliated to Mencap UK and supports more than 300 families each week. Anyone wishing to support them or suggest other fundraising or awareness initiatives should contact Ruth Fawcett on 0113 2351331. SAA-uk is a charitable arts foundation. They offer numerous weekly classes in South Asian arts, hold monthly classical concerts and organise three or four social events each year, often in conjunction with organisations representing people with special needs. Leeds Photographic Society The Leeds Photographic Society had a busy November which included hosting the second round of the West Riding Inter-Club Colour Competition, as well as holding its own annual dinner, an evening which included the judging of two of the society's most prestigious events, the Robinson and Awmack Trophy competitions, both of which test a photographer's ability to produce images across a range of different genres. Judge Michael Newton said the standard of images was very

The society has over 100 members of all abilities who practice a wide range of photographic genres. It meets most Tuesdays at 7.30 pm. in

St Edmund’s Church Hall, Lidgett Park Road, Roundhay, Leeds LS8 1JN. (Please note there are no meetings on 24th or 31st December) Please visit http://www.lps1852. co.uk/ for more details and you can also follow the Society on Facebook at http://www. facebook.com/lps1852 and Twitter @lps1852

Alwoodley Singers Alwoodley Singers is one of the dozen or more community clubs and groups centred at Alwoodley Community Hall in The Avenue, Leeds 17 – last month Covered magazine featured the art group. So it was their first rehearsal evening for the Christmas concert, this year on 14 December. Separating couples – choosing the right path for you and your family If you are considering ending a relationship and you are anxious about how this will impact upon you and your family it is important to be aware that there is a process which may assist you and your ex-partner in resolving issues surrounding children and finances other than through lengthy negotiations between your solicitors and expensive Court proceedings. Family Mediation is a future focused process which enables you and your ex-partner to reach joint decisions about your

family’s future. Mediation allows you to talk openly to one another about your concerns, exploring what options are available and coming to a mutual decision as to what should happen to any property and finances and where children are concerned, making decisions which you consider to be in the best interests of your children. Mediation enables you to retain some control, as opposed to putting your future in the hands of a judge. In any event, before an individual can make an application to Court to resolve issues surrounding children or finances, that person must first of all go along to a mediation assessment appointment to see if their matter would be suitable for mediation.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm – a breath of fresh air Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is an amazing resource for the whole city. Established in 1980 to provide services to inner city communities, it began operating from two old caravans and now covers 24 acres. It is a working farm with a wide variety of animals, and a major centre for community and environmental work. Animals are central and the focus is on conservation and biodiversity. The farm has a successful breeding programme for endangered animals such as the Whitefaced Woodland sheep which originates in the hills around Yorkshire. Farm policy is to plant native trees, such as English oak, alder, silver birch and field maple. To sustain them, there is regular hedge laying and coppicing. The trees provide important habitat for birds, insects and bats, for both food and shelter. As much deadwood as possible is left to encourage small mammals such as hedgehogs and field mice and invertebrates such as worms, woodlice, slugs and beetles. Many wild creatures visit or live at the Farm. There are foxes, badgers, rabbits, small rodents and roe deer as well as many species of birds (finches, tits, robins, wagtails) and minibeasts (bugs, insects, frogs, newts) along with butterflies and bees.

Woolly creatures graze happily

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm has a great deal to offer schools and other youth groups. It has sheep, cows, pigs, goats, chickens and a variety of smaller animals as well as woodland, meadowland, a wildflower garden and three ponds. The EpiCentre and Farm offer many examples of sustainable development. The Farm offers a wide variety of half and full day projects, suitable for a range of abilities and ages. It also works in partnership with Leeds City Council Adult Social Care in providing a community care scheme where adults with learning disabilities receive training in gardening, literacy and numeracy. From time to time there are volunteering opportunities at MVUF for those who would like to share their skills or knowledge and help staff with day-to-day duties on the Farm. The Garden, Education and Events Teams all welcome volunteers and there are one-off Action Events most months. For all details and information on room hire, corporate events, parties and so on, check the website mvuf.org.uk

Go Glam! This Is Chelsea, The Only Way Is Essex. If these programmes have taught us anything it’s that glamour is on-trend. Whilst the ladies of Chelsea might be more understated than the glamourpusses in Essex, the message is clear – Go Glam! If you’re more akin to jeans and a jumper, don’t worry – here’s Covered’s 5 top tips for getting ahead in the glamour race.

1 Get a tan Orange is not a natural skin tone, nor is it particularly appealing so try and steer clear of budget methods for home application. Under the sun is of course the best place to get a natural tan (taking precautions such as skin block). If you can’t rely on a regular dose of sun or want an instant glow, visit an established salon for a spray tan or jump on a sunbed. Salon’s will offer a range of advice and should have your safety in mind too.

41

2 Put some bounce in your hair ‘flat’ or ‘lifeless’ are not positive words when it comes to glamour. ‘Volume’ and ‘shape’ are. And the good news is- back combing your hair is back on the menu! Blow dry your hair upside down, add loadsa hairspray and pin up appropaitely for a mane worthy of Farrah Fawcett! – or Cheryl Cole- depending on your genaration…

3 Paint your lips Remember the bluish tinge your lips took on during the long winter months? Well no more pale mouths! Paint your lips using this seasons brightest colours, whether that be scarlet, apricot, fuscia or wine, don’t forget a slick of moisturisng colour when stepping out of the house this Summer.

4 Don’t forget your fingertips We are all guilty of neglecting our nails, but remember they say a lot about our general health (brittle, dry with white spots anyone?) Lets treat our nails with a bit of respect and give them centre stage for once. Bright nail polish gives a playful, fun and lighthearted twist to your outfit and should be considered a must have accessory!

LUSCIOUS Have a Shellac manicure & get a Shellac pedicure 1/2 price, all for £34.50. For an extra £10 add a Spray Tan. (Only with this magazine) Luscious Salon 139 Stainbeck lane LS7 2EB Tel 0113 3187442

5 Please yourself! Ditch the pastels and earthy tones. Cast out neutrals and show the world your confident side! There’s nothing wrong with wearing a beautiful, understated blouse, or perfectly put togther trouser suit- but it doesn’t scream FUN! Step out of your comfort zone this Summer and dress to impress. Choose bright colours to reflect your mood, choose a flattering cut to make you feel good, and select those shoes that are just that extra inch higher than your everyday shoe, just to shake things up a bit. If you’re still struggling for inspiration, bob in to an independant salon or boutique. You’re far more likely to receive true customer service and genuine advice often lacking in the chain stores.
