Really Useful Guide
onwards and upwards! Hello and a warm welcome to readers old and new from all at the Covered team – we’re delighted to be merging our title with The Really Useful Guides and reaching thousands of new households with our monthly blend of hyper-local news, views and features – all supported by the area’s best businesses of course. I’m sure readers will join me in extending thanks to Chris Dance who steered the good ship ‘Really Useful’ for the last nine years. Chris has stood aside as publisher and we wish him the very best of luck for the future. Dave Smith is staying with the new look publication so please continue to contact him with any advertising requirements. You can expect some changes to your Really Useful Guide over the coming months including a name change to Covered. Covered has been publishing magazines in Leeds for years now and, having merged with RUG, now boast the biggest monthly distribution in the city. 90,000 copies per month in total. You can expect to read more local news as our team spends time out in the community; attending, supporting and reporting your events and activities. If you have an event you’d like some exposure for, just let me know and I’ll do my best to offer some support. Other changes will include new reader-friendly listings for non-profits and charities, features on fashion, hair & beauty, gardening, property, pets, arts & entertainment and much, much more. We’ll also include giveaways and cash prize competitions – everyone likes a freebie don’t they? Try and ‘Find Sid’ this month for your chance to win £100. If you’re a party person then there are two tickets for the city’s hottest New Year event up for grabs on Pg2. If there is something you’d like to see in the new look magazine then don’t be shy, let me know! You can also share your views with others in the community by writing to our Readers’ Letters page – there’s £10 up for grabs if you’re the Star Letter.
Councillors Comments: Crossgates We would like to update residents on the current developments with Cross Gates Post Office. The Post Office was due to close and many people have fought to keep it open. Cllr Grahame attended a public meeting at the Cross Gates Methodist Church Hall to discuss this issue. Cllr Asghar Khan, representatives of the Communications Workers’ Union and Post Office staff were there to work out an agreement to keep the service running. Cllr Grahame is delighted to announce that until a franchise is brought in to offer a replacement service, the Cross Gates Post Office will remain open. This means that residents will not lose this vital service which will continue to be provided after the Post Office closes. Residents will also be aware of the parking issues on the Kennerleigh estate. We have worked with the Council’s Highways service to introduce a series of parking restrictions in the area. Affected residents have received letters advising them of the details. We hope this will address the problems many residents have been experiencing with parking and traffic in the area. Don’t forget the Cross Gates Christmas Lights switch on which will take place on 14th November at 7pm on Austhorpe Road. We hope many of you will be at this fantastic event! We are always happy to help people with any issues they might have. If you would like our assistance then you can contact us via the details below.
I hope you will welcome the changes to your local magazine and I look forward to providing you with a quality publication for many years to come.

Councillors Comments: Judith Cummins Part of my role as a local councillor is to engage with the council’s Area Team in my role as Area Lead for Employment, Skills and Welfare. You may have read about the expansion of the Thorpe Park development and I wanted to let you know more about what this will mean for our area. The proposed development is a mix of retail and offices and it is scheduled to start over the next few years. As your councillors we have insisted that the developers produce an employment strategy that makes sure local people have a fair share of the estimated 10,000 jobs that will be created. This does not include the construction of the link road that will also offer job opportunities for local people, as well bringing relief to the congestion that we all suffer on a daily basis from heavy goods vehicles and lorries using roads designed for local traffic. We are also in negotiations with the developers to make sure that young people from our schools have work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.
I do hope that we will be able to keep you up-todate with this and other developments in our area over the coming months and years.

Planting shrubs with berries will brighten the garden and encourage wildlife.
18
There is still time to finish planting daffodils, crocus and other small spring bulbs, as these need to be growing now. Next comes the tulips, plant in groups of five at a depth of 8”, which will allow them to naturalise over the next few years. These may be inter-planted with wallflowers, winter pansies or violas to keep the beds looking interesting. Foliage and berries are essential at this time of the year, to provide colour in the garden. Japanese acers are slow growing, with their leaves turning yellow, orange and red. Similar to the smoke bush Cotinus, Euonymus and a number of other shrubs. There has been a good crop of bright yellow and red berries on the pyracantha shrubs, also on the Rowan trees which can be white, yellow, pink, red and orange. There are a number of other shrubs with berries, so look around and choose one to brighten your garden and feed the birds as well. Prepare to take all your tender pots under cover, checking they are not harbouring any disease or
insects before housing them. Then have your fleece, bubble wrap or plant covers handy, ready to insulate them when the first frost warnings arrive. Do not lift your dahlias until the first frosts have blackened the leaves, then take them inside and store them upside down for two weeks to dry out – followed by storage in a frost free area in dry peat. Garden chrysanthemums should also be lifted and kept in moist soil, ready for taking cuttings next year. This is an ideal time to plant bare root fruit stock, roses and perennials, as the soil is still warm enough for them to establish their roots before winter arrives. Prepare the site well, incorporating organic matter if necessary.

What our advertisers say:
What our readers say:
"We advertised in the first edition of Covered and the response was fantastic. We still advertise to this day and every advert brings more and more customers to our busy garage.
“After a life time of working in newspapers, your little gift through my letterbox is both welcome and awaited!
We've found Covered to be by far the most productive means of promoting our business to the local community - I would have no hesitation in recommending it to others" Phil Leeks M.D.Town Garage, Featherbank Lane, Horsforth.
Great local news content, beautiful quality glossy paper and its A5 size makes it perfect to read anywhere. The adverts have become my Bible, I refer to them for everything, and I have found brilliant, local, reliable contractors and lots of amazing deals, which have saved me money and give a feel good factor of supporting local businesses. I also share my mag, it is read from cover to cover first and then passed on to family who might need this or that, or simply enjoy "COVERED". The name say's it all, you've got it Covered!” Anne Huckerby LS16

Property Matters: WINTER CHECKLIST It’s no coincidence that during winter’s harsh months you’re far more likely to need the services of tradespeople. Frost, rain, wind and snow are enemies of bricks and mortar. Trades-people tend to be at their busiest over winter too, so you might not get quick service should you have an urgent need. Here’s Covered’s Really Useful Guide for ‘winter-proofing’ your home, inside and out!
OUTDOORS Get a roof survey: If your roof leaked last year, the likelihood is that it will leak again this year - it won’t have magically self-repaired. Leaks can be cured by something as simple as replacing a tile, but left unremedied will create bigger problems. Call in an expert to survey and sort it.
Look after your gutters: Be it a bungalow or a threestorey town house, debris will find its way into your gutters. Remove sticks, moss and leaves regularly. If you don’t, then you risk water build-up, or worse still, ice, which may cause water to seep down walls. Gutter Guards (available from most DIY stores) will alleviate this problem for you. Take care of trees: Snow, ice and wind are all bad news for weak trees or fragile branches. If a tree topples, it could fall on your car, your house or injure a passing person. If you suspect your tree needs attention, don’t leave it until the high winds arrive – get an arborist or tree care specialist in to take a look. Holes & gaps: Use expandable foam to seal large gaps in brickwork (take a look around pipes, for example). Check around window and doorframes, and fill with caulking if needed.

INDOORS Pipes: Ever had a burst pipe? You’re lucky if not – the consequences can verge on catastrophic and resultantly require flooring, ceilings and furniture to be replaced. Keep the heating on low if frost is forecast and make sure you know where the stop tap is. Insulate: There are many initiatives offered to homeowners who want to wrap-up their homes. Take advantage of this opportunity. Add extra insulation to lofts/attics. Well-insulated cellars and garages will also keep pipes from freezing. Check smoke detectors: This is a must-do all year round but an increase in domestic fires during winter means extra vigilance is essential. Make sure your detector is working. Install a carbon monoxide detector too if you don’t have one already – better to be safe than sorry. Service your boiler: Boilers should be serviced at least once a year to make sure that they are safe and
functioning optimally. Have your heating system looked over too, and check pipes for cracks and leaks. Chimney: If you’re lucky enough to have an open fire, then an annual sweeping is essential. An unswept chimney is a potential fire hazard. What’s more, when it comes to Christmas Day you’ll want to ensure that Santa makes his descent without getting too dirty! As always, the best advice and solutions will come from local independent traders and retailers. If you are undertaking any work on your home it is important that you have professional advice.

Great Support for NSPCC in Barwick The annual autumn fair in aid of the NSPCC in Barwick-in-Elmet on 12 October was a wonderful community event, with the Village Hall buzzing all morning. There were cakes, books, toys and games, gifts and bric-a-brac, a stitch-and-knit stall along with local produce and home-made preserves. The raffle had some seriously desirable prizes – a TV, a child’s scooter, meal and garden centre vouchers... It was a real family event with all ages participating, from teenagers Rebecca Wood and Niamh Kerry running a teddy tombola to Muriel Rushton helping to man the busy café. Muriel is 91 and has been an NSPCC supporter for well over half a century. The produce stall was doing well and was very well-supplied with home-grown fruit and veg from carrots to quinces. There were bargains to be had all round the room and a certain amount of goodnatured haggling was part of the fun. A great atmosphere and an unqualified success.

Scholes in Bloom celebrates gold “The hugely enthusiastic and active Scholes in Bloom group, along with their plentiful supporters, should be proud of their many achievements”. So said the Yorkshire in Bloom judges, awarding the village a Gold Rose in 2013. Enthusiasm and support were much in evidence at the fund-raising coffee morning, held in the Village Hall on 12 October. The group raised just over £700 – an excellent result for a small community. Scholes in Bloom was set up a decade ago by Parish Council members and has productive links with the school, churches, sports groups and societies. It communicates regularly with every home and has funding from Leeds CC, the Parish Council and local businesses and individuals. Bloomers meet near the church on Mondays at 9.30 all year round. Come the spring, Covered will be joining them to report on plans and activities for 2014. The Scholes Village Show group was a notable presence at the coffee morning in October and works closely with Scholes in Bloom. The group was set up three years ago to revive the Show, which had not taken place for three years and was in danger of disappearing altogether. Once again, thanks to the dedication of eight hard-working committee members (loyally supported by family and friends), it is an established feature of village life and usually takes place on the second Saturday in September. The 2013 show drew nearly 600 entries with over 100 in the Children's section and a lot from the school. November’s AGM will confirm the date and Covered will keep you posted. Ben Hogan is chairman of Scholes in Bloom and Lilla Womack (left) is planting coordinator. Here with group member Joan Burgon at the coffee morning in October

Lions – at home and abroad Garforth & District Lions are part of Lions Clubs International, based in Oak Brook, Chicago and founded by Melvin Jones in 1917. It is now a worldwide organisation of around 1.35 million, with some 21 000 members in 1000 clubs in Great Britain & Ireland. A small proportion of funds raised here supports the activities of the International Foundation, which distributes tens of millions of dollars annually to major projects, including work with the United Nations, sightrelated programmes, Water Aid, and catastrophe grant aid around the world (including the UK). Garforth & District Lions Club was formed in 1972 and celebrated 40 years’ community service in 2012. The club has 38 members, all unpaid volunteers devoting some spare time to helping others in the community, while having fun and developing friendships. All money raised goes into charitable activities, admin costs being met by members. Fund-raising and voluntary work take place across the district, including Aberford, Allerton Bywater, Barwick, Great and Little Preston, Kippax, Ledsham, Ledston, Micklefield, Scholes and Swillington. Lions support many local causes, including scouts, guides and other youth organisations, disabled people, sports teams, schools, elderly persons and other community groups. They also undertake environmental projects and health campaigns, such as the Message in a Bottle, used spectacles’ collections and diabetic screenings. A recent event in Leeds
Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Tom Murray, has represented Garforth and Swillington since 1992. Here the Lions take him on a blindfold walk to raise awareness on World Sight Day
saw the Lions blindfolding the Lord Mayor of Leeds for a walk from the Civic Hall to the Town Hall on World Sight Day – to promote the Lions Eye Health Programme, the issues faced by the visually impaired in Leeds and the services available to them. The Garforth and District Lions are well known from community events such as car boot sales, race nights, beer festivals, the summer gala and the November bonfire. Some of these are public service rather than fund-raising; it is clearly a good idea to have a community bonfire instead of a multitude of rockets going off at a tangent in back gardens... The Lions come into their own in the run-up to Christmas, with Santa’s grotto at Strikes’ garden centre from 16 November, the Garforth lights switch-on on 29 November, and the Santa street collection from early December. The Lions meet at Garforth Country Club on the first and third Mondays each month. They can be contacted via their website at www. garforthlions.btck.co.uk or by calling 0845 833 5825.

Getting into character on day three of six weeks of rehearsals – Jacob James Beswick (Mowgli) and Andrew French (Shere Khan)
Into the Jungle at West Yorkshire Playhouse To panto or not to panto? If you are looking for a family Christmas treat with a difference, head for West Yorkshire Playhouse. Running for eight weeks from 30 November is an adaptation of Kipling’s Jungle Book unique to WYP. Adapted by Rosanna Lowe, directed and choreographed by multi award-winning Liam Steel (of Les Misérables fame) and with original music by Niraj Chag, it is a fastmoving and dynamic production using physical theatre, dance and puppetry. Mowgli’s journey brings him into contact with friendly and fearsome characters, brought vividly to life. Watched over by a kindly panther and a clumsy (but well-intentioned) bear, he confronts a boa-constrictor, greedy dancing monkeys and, finally, the bloodthirsty tiger Shere Khan. Each encounter teaches him something about the world, other people and himself – and how to build on his gifts and qualities and curb his dangerous tendency to over-confidence.
There is a cast of twelve, including Andrew French as Shere Khan and Jacob James Beswick as Mowgli. Neither is a stranger to Leeds; Jacob’s sister lives in Armley and Andrew was here six months ago in the world première of Refugee Boy, based on the novel by Benjamin Zephaniah. Both are happy to be back in Yorkshire. Andrew told Covered, “the fish and chips are the best in the country – and people here even say thank you to the bus driver!” This Jungle Book is very much aimed at families. There is plenty of music and dance, but Disney it is not. The recommendation is for 7-year-olds and up as the story is very close to Kipling’s original, tracing Mowgli’s path to manhood. It is a tale of rites of passage, of a coming of age, fiercer and edgier than the softer film version. What about younger children? The Playhouse is also staging the well-loved Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs, running for six weeks from 6 December. All the giggles will be there in this version, along with song, live music and puppetry against a magical set. Information and booking on 0113 213 7700 or wyp.org.uk
