Latest News from around the Town. I am delighted to report that following last month’s article on the continuing failure of Leeds City Council to empty bins and cut the grass in the St James estate that, within days of going to print, I received notification the offending waste bins had all been emptied and the grass verges had also been cut and tidied! A great result. Local residents hope that the outside of the Council owned flats are tidied up too in this often neglected area.

An Englishman’s Home is His Shed We will have all heard the old phrase “an Englishman’s home is his castle”. More and more though, it has also been said that an Englishman’s real home is his shed. The humble garden shed is fast becoming an extension of the family home, with garden tools and flower pots making way for TVs, comfy chairs and any item that does not quite fit anywhere else. Sheds now come in all shapes, sizes and colours and for those of us who just cannot make do with that, they can be custom built to your own design and budget. Sadly though, from a policing point of view, very few shed owners are giving their wooden ‘castle’ the security a ‘castle’ deserves. Shed burglaries are on the increase and this is not surprising given what is being kept in them. Stop and think for a moment about what is in your shed. Think about what it would cost to replace the contents. Is there a £1000 mountain bike being protected by a £1 padlock? Simple measures like chaining bikes together or chaining them to an anchor point can dramatically reduce the chances of them being taken. It is quite common for thieves to walk to their target area with the view of cycling back – deny them their means of transport! Another tip is to keep power tools and hand tools in a locked cabinet. Or perhaps consider getting a shed alarm or heavy duty locks with a door bar for your shed. There will be some readers who feel they have nothing more valuable than a spade in their sheds. Well, a spade may not be valuable to you, but to a burglar it is a very useful tool for forcing a door or a window. So as summer approaches and we return to our gardens once again, spare a thought for your humble shed before a burglar does.

Smiling Faces at Queensway Primary School, Yeadon

The Otley-based Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) visited Queensway Primary School, Yeadon, at the end of March – taking SID with them.

SID is a stand-alone speed indication device and can be set according to the speed limit in the locality – in this case 30 mph. SID can pick up the vehicle’s speed at around 100 metres and displays it every couple of seconds – with a smile if the vehicle is within the limit and a frown if not. The duties of a series of pupils on the day were to record the registration numbers of vehicles attracting SID’s displeasure and hand them over to PCSOs Nikki Woods and Rob Southwood. Anything more than marginal transgression is likely to result in the issue of a warning letter to the vehicle’s registered keeper. This safety initiative is ongoing. If you represent any primary school or similar youth group which you feel might benefit from a visit from SID then do give your local NPT a call – or have a word with a local PCSO.

Disruption Caused by Rail Works at Horsforth Station - Who to Ask?

The Leeds Trinity University College Business Network meeting on 4 April was a little smaller, more intimate, than usual – part Easter holidays, part the heavy snowfall overnight. But that gave those present the privilege of engaging more closely with guest speaker Lucy Goetz of Reach Further, a social media consultancy based in Weetwood Hall.

LTBN next meets at 12.30 on Wednesday 23 May. Trinity’s own lecturer and broadcaster Richard Horsman will be leading the session “Becoming News; finding the story in your organisation”.

Lucy, a Trinity graduate, took the group through the importance of businesses networking on social media, giving details of a few tricks and tools of the trade.

Mischief Films’ presence at Horsforth Station for a couple of days in February pushed half a dozen or so cars out of the car park and onto adjacent streets. But what of Railtrack’s major works continuing until November?

On 7 March Andrew Hall of LCC Transport Policy forwarded to local Councillor Barry Anderson a letter he had received from Railtrack. It was a copy of the letter being issued by Railtrack to residents within 100 metres of certain sections of the Harrogate – Leeds railway line. It gives notice of major works in various areas and gives contact details at Railtrack. Major works in the “Horsforth Station area” between March and November are to include heavy construction earth works, excavation, track installation and demolition of a signal box. Much of the work will be done overnight and at weekends. But what if local residents have concerns not covered by the letter? What if businesses, organisations or individuals outside the 100 metres have any questions? Well, Railtrack’s letter gives their 24 hour National Helpline number 08457 11 41 41.

Helpline indeed! Cllr Barry Anderson forwarded LCC’s letter on the day of receipt. Covered magazine contacted Railtrack that same day. After negotiating their automated switchboard, and then explaining where Horsforth was, we asked how people outside the 100 metres might subscribe to the letter and any updates.

The 24hr Railtrack National Helpline was unable to answer our enquiry immediately. Their reply, eight days later, included another copy of the letter but gave no answers to our questions.

Trench Warfare in Woodside

Reader Katina Georgiou contacted Covered about the general state of the state of the Lickless Drive area in Woodside, Horsforth. Her similar letter to Leeds City Council had been met with a standard response; thank you for writing, we’ll get back to you within fifteen working days. But that was back in February. She has since telephoned but is still waiting.

Local Matters

Litter in Lickless Drive was not a major problem when Covered visited, though three deep ruts along the drive seemed to attract more than their fair share. These ruts were caused, and being made worse, by large vehicles (allegedly refuse) having to mount the verges to get past legally parked cars where the drive is at its narrowest. (Photo: Ivor Hughes)

Over and above Katina’s concerns about litter, she is most concerned about the way large vehicles persist in driving on the verges. There are three verges affected, the worst being the one at the bottom of the drive, nearest Low Lane. The road is fire engines would be blocked. A simple answer, very narrow there, so large vehicles have to mount possibly the only one, would be to yellow-line the length of two cars opposite. the verge if a car is parked opposite. The usual fix-it of putting kerbstones or other obstructions on the verge would work, though only up to a point. Access for refuse vehicles and

Covered has written to LCC repeating their resident’s concerns and asking why it has taken so long for them to respond. We’ll keep you posted.

Last month we featured Phoenix Concert Band, an orchestral brass, woodwind and percussion orchestra based at West Park Centre. This month it’s the more traditional brass band based at Leeds Trinity University College. Horsforth City of Leeds Brass Band was formed, as far as present members recall, by a 1970s merger between the two in question. Though now it’s more Horsforth than Leeds.

An encouraging amount of stands turned out for the event, dotted round the perimeter of the car park. A typical, though small, range of spring clear-out goods were on offer. Phil intends holding the boot sales on a regular basis throughout the year and welcomes anybody interested in having a stall to call the pub for details. The Abbey Inn also hosted their own beer festival on the April 13 and 14, the pub hosted real ale and ciders, porters and lagers and finished the event off with some live music on the Saturday night with food served throughout the two days. “Subject to legal agreements being completed, it has been agreed that the drama collection will move to Leeds Libraries to be based in their Central Library and the music will be housed in Kirklees Library HQ on Red Doles Lane in Huddersfield, with the collection to be managed by the social enterprise Fresh Horizons.

“NO COLD CALLING” ZONES

Leeds Leisure Services have also advised me “We are working towards moving the Drama collection across and having it publicly available from the beginning of May; this will mean there is little if any down time. We will also write to the Leeds groups as soon as we have more information to pass on

OPAL at Holt Park run a number of exercise classes for older people. They would like to develop these classes further. Funding was approved by the Adel & Wharfedale Councillors and this will part-fund these classes and provide other health information for older people.

Funding has been secured to set up No Cold Calling Zones throughout the area, in partnership with West Yorkshire Joint Services (Trading Standards) and West Yorkshire Police. The aim is to provide some protection from rogue traders and intrusive callers. Please contact me if you feel your street or cul de sac would benefit from this scheme. Cllr. Local Matters

Forum 2000 meets on May 2nd to hear Brian Newbould, recently celebrated on Radio Three, as a world expert on Schubert, talk about ‘Vegetarianism.’

Organisers, helpers and representatives from the beneficiary, St Margarets Church, met on 21 March at The Abbey Inn, Newlay LS13, to discuss the fourth Horsforth Beer festival held earlier that month in St Margaret’s Church Hall. 1500 visitors over the two days consumed 650 gallons of real ale and 400 litres of cider, raising £13,000 towards the cost of replacing St Margarets’ heating system.

The Hors5th Beer Festival will be on 1 and 2 March 2013.

Forum 2000 On the 9th Kath Harwood will return to report on life in Palestine - on the Gaza Strip and Bethlehem in ‘How long, O Lord, How Long!’ The 16th is the last session until autumn and there will be a trip to Nostell Priory with its superb collection of Chippendale furniture. Jack Metcalfe, expert on Chippendale and marquetry will lead. The trip starts at Fink Hill car park at 9.00 am and returns about 6.00pm.

Readers’ Letters STAR LETTER WIN £10 Give Covered a call to claim Dear Sir, Apropos the on-street parking difficulties caused by commuters parking in the environs of the Horsforth station there is a possible solution to relieve the pressure on Low Lane. Between The Stephenson Group and the Evans Halshaw Garage there is the empty office block which was used by British Gas. It has ample parking facilities for a good number of vehicles. Metro and Network Rail could hire this parking area as a short term solution to their minimal parking facility at Horsforth Station. That particular building has been vacant for several years and may well be so in the foreseeable future. At least it would be worth pursuing to alleviate the pressure on residents. Garden Guru with Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment & Garden Association The longer days and warm sunshine, has encouraged many plants to burst in to growth and flower early. It is exiting to think this is the time to rush outside, and start to sow seeds, plant salad leaves and start to enjoy the new growing year. A word of caution, make haste slowly, it will certainly grow colder before the summer and there may be an occasional frost. If you have daffodil bulbs in clumps which have not flowered well, they will have gone blind (stopped flowering) due to being congested. Dig them out now, then replant them in loose groups with plenty of feed. Snowdrops and other bulbs should receive the same treatment where you wish to increase colour around the garden. With the new shoots of delphiniums and other juicy shrubs starting to grow, the slug and snail population will start to come out of hibernation to feast on your plants. There are many ways of controlling them, so

One of my favourite quotes is “The danger is not in aiming too high but in aiming too low and achieving it”. We can create whatever we want in life - you might find that hard to believe, but having climbed Mount Everest I absolutely know that we can. You really CAN live the life of your dreams and I want to help you do that. Sailing across the Atlantic and climbing Everest taught me that we already possess all the tools and wisdom that we need to be able to create the life we want to live, we just don’t realise it. My role as an Intuitive Life Coach is to shine a light on the wonderful gifts you have hidden away within you, to give you back your selfbelief and help you to get from where you are now to where you want to be. For those of you who want to change something in your life, throughout April I am offering free introductory coaching sessions. Stuart Andrew MP Talks

Local Matters

From my time as a Leeds City councillor I have long been interested in planning issues and planning policy. I am therefore pleased that the Government is seeking to simplify the process on this very important matter; protecting greenfield sites and giving local communities the final word on development issues in their area. There have been a number of such planning issues which I have encountered since becoming an MP and I am involved with several local community groups, such as Wharfedale and Airedale Review Development (WARD), working to protect the interests of the residents in areas threatened by overdevelopment. Currently Menston is at risk of having its infrastructure pushed to its limits with two new developments permitted by Bradford City Council on greenbelt land and there is talk of similar developments taking place on the Billings in Rawdon. A number of colleagues and myself recently wrote to the Prime Minister regarding the draft National Planning Policy Framework, asking that the Government ensure that brownfield sites are prioritised for development over greenfields and a solid commitment to sustainable development is made. I therefore welcome the final NPPF guidelines published in March as a clear sign of the Government’s commitment to protecting our countryside. This will make sustainable development a priority, putting local people in charge, building more affordable homes, supporting local jobs and local firms, stopping urban sprawl and protecting the character of local neighbourhoods. Protections for the Green Belt, for National Parks and Areas of Outstanding National Beauty will continue. It is vital that we take steps to protect the countryside and our local communities for future generations. However, as a note of caution, we must keep a close eye on things and ensure there are not unintended consequences as a result of the changes. Stuart Andrew MP Member of Parliament for Pudsey, Horsforth & Aireborough

Chicken and Egg Situation at Iveson Primary Pupils, parents and staff at Iveson Primary School, Cookridge, enjoyed an Easter related fun and activities day on 1 April - the Sunday before Easter weekend. Activities included handling and feeding the school’s chickens – last year six were rehoused from a battery farm and the current flock is now laying and breeding. An Easter cake competition had been judged in the morning – with most of the evidence eaten by the time we got there. Fundraising stalls included one for B3P – a charity supporting tourism and, in turn, the community in a cross-border peace park in The Balkans.

Pupils tend two of Iveson Primary School’s flock of chickens while some of their classmates start on the egg and spoon obstacle course. (Photos: Ivor Hughes)

The main exertion on the day was a series of egg and spoon races, with obstacles added on parts of insult to the hard work being put in by the school’s the course. Don’t wonder where the eggs are in the chickens. And a waste of good eggs. No, small pictures, they aren’t any. It would have been an dummies were used instead.

Leeds CC New Approach to Noise Nuisance

Following Covered’s report last month of the problems being experienced by residents in Quarry Terrace, Horsforth, Leeds City Council has written informing us that they will now be responding more effectively to problems with noise by using a new approach that gives them a broader range of options and powers. LCC has recently moved responsibility for noise nuisance complaints to their Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team – with more powers to take action against those causing persistent noise nuisance. Additional remedies include ASBOs, anti-social behaviour contracts, ASB closure notice and possession proceedings against serious persistent offenders.

Safer Leeds is also developing an out of hours response service for persistent noise nuisance problems, the aim being to enhance response rates and improve customer satisfaction. Developing closer links with Neighbourhood Policing Teams and other key partners is also taking place. Cllr Peter Gruen – LCC executive board member with responsibility for neighbourhoods, housing and regeneration; “Noise nuisance is a problem that blights many communities in the city, and can really affect peoples’ home life. The new arrangements will enable us to take a more robust approach to deal with this problem, and reduce the disruption that it causes to residents. As this is a new approach we are looking to make improvements as we move forward and find what works best for the service to ensure that our customers receive the best possible service.”

Hello Hello Hello

Final warning The “mini-police” event on 29 February involved the three PCSOs and six Year Five pupils. Errant parkers were given 10 lines of "I must park considerately" instead of a £30 fixed penalty ticket. Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Team has indicated to Covered magazine that those visitors who continue to park illegally are now far more likely to be ticketed. Still, they can’t say they weren’t warned.

In last month’s Covered we mistakenly advised that ADBC met on a Monday. The club actually meet on Tuesday. We’re happy to set the record straight.

Stefan Rushworth (pictured centre) has been working closely with the school over the past few years. The current Road Safety Initiative started with the school sending letters to parents, reminding them to park legally when collecting their children. Stefan Rushworth and Julie Richardson have also addressed several classes within the school, giving advice on road safety and staying safe. Rawdon Fun Day

The 3rd Rawdon Fun Day takes place on Saturday 9th June. Following the success of last year’s event, the Fun Day Committee has been hard at work raising funds to make the day possible. As featured in Covered recently, the committee held a charity auction, hosted by Emmerdale’s Chris Chittell (Eric Pollard) where over £9,000 was raised toward funding this great community event which also benefits Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Tommy’s The Children’s Charity. The day’s running order for RFD 2012 is now well underway and the range of events has been announced. The day will include: Galloping Acrobats, Birds of Prey Demonstration, Dancers, Majorettes, Fire Engine Display (including live demonstration of car accident extractions), Activity Tent (arts, crafts and entertainment for all), Live Music, Real Ale Bar, Kiddies Corner, Bouncy Castles, Trampolines, Fairground Attractions and the ubiquitous Rawdon Fun Day Welly Wanging championship, and much, much more. For this year, entrance for adults will be £3, and it will be £1 for children under 16. Infants brought to the site in pushchairs get in free!

Volunteering The Fun Day Committee are now looking for people who are able to help support the day by giving up a couple of hours, either on the day itself or on the run up to the event. All your efforts, even if you can only spare an hour, will assist the committee in making the day the success it is.If you wish to volunteer your time, bring along your expertise to the event, or just suggest ideas, please email: enquiries@rawdonfunday.com as soon as you can so that planning of the day can begin.

“Time and money. Two things I wish I had more of before I moved and now I have both I lived in a three bedroom bungalow before I bought my apartment but it’s amazing how the little jobs that need doing add up. I was forever forking out for someone to fix this or that. Now I don’t have to worry about a thing. I reckon I’m at least £50 a month better off since moving. No gas bills as everything is electric. Just one service charge means no separate water rates, no individual window cleaner or gardener to pay for. And as for external maintenance that’s all included. Even my personal alarm I used to carry with me is redundant thanks to the 24-hour emergency call system. Saving money has also given me more time to enjoy myself and that’s worth more to me than anything else.“

Local Businesses Limited sponsorship opportunities are available. Help nominated charities, Tommy’s and Yorkshire Air Ambulance by supporting the day and raise your company profile too. Opportunities include: main event sponsorship, advertising within the RFD programme, signage around the arena and roadside or sponsorship of a beer barrel or hand pump. Sponsorship opportunities start at just £30 so please get involved if you can. Contact Mark on: 07515 918926 or email: enquiries@rawdonfunday.com

Horsforth Harriers Ready for ABC

Fairweather Finale Horsforth Fairweather have finally conjured up some form and performances as the season begins to draw to a close in the Leeds Combination Division 1. Injuries, unavailability and commitment troubles have seen Fairweather slide from champions elect of last season to relegation battling this term. However, they have seemingly found a working formula in their toughest month of fixtures. Fairweather went into March with away fixtures at league leaders Young Guns, second placed Morley Cricket and Sports, third placed Pudsey Liberal Club and 5th placed Old Tree. Fairweather saw off Old Tree 2-1 in an extremely spirited display and fought back from 2-0 down at Pudsey Liberals to snatch a well deserved point. Despite defeats against Morley, Young Guns and Swillington Welfare the Horsforth outfit could easily have returned as victors with a series of guilt edged chances wasted in front of goals in both fixtures.

Manager Martin Woods finally looks to have shaken the monkey off his sides back as they begin to pick up valuable points with pleasing performances to match. Woods will be happy if he can keep this current crop of new and young players for next season and avoid a similar situation of losing key players in the summer. Fairweather have just two matches remaining of the season and end the campaign with a home fixture against Swillington Welfare on April 22.

High Flying Lions Guiseley AFC enjoyed an incredible month as they inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Hyde and overturn a 1-0 deficit at the Shay to put eight points between themselves and newly promoted FC Halifax in 3rd. The Lions now go into the final month of the season chasing for the Blue Square North Crown and the also face Bradford Park Avenue in the West Riding County Cup Final at Valley Parade. Steve Kittrick’s men will be buoyed going into the final month of the season hot on the heels of Hyde who have been top of the league since August. The Nethermoor outfit are close to striking distance now, five points away but holding a precious game in hand on the Greater Manchester rivals.

Yarnbury RFC “FOR OLI” on Easter Sunday On Easter Sunday Yarnbury Rugby Club held its second annual fundraising event in memory of Oli Simcoe-Shelton. Oli, who had been a club member from the age of 11, succumbed to cancer early last year aged only 20. This year the aim was to raise funds for a memorial bench, Teenage Cancer Trust and to support Nathan Cubitt, the Keighley Colt confined to a wheelchair following an injury this season.

Guiseley have just a handful of league fixtures remaining and will need all the support they can get between now and the end of the season as they push for promotion, so make sure you help the lads and get down to Nethermoor and cheer your side onto victory! The Lions have also now completed their new stand which provides an additional 200 seats for the home crowd!

This year’s event, on the pitch, was a rotation of matches between Oli’s former team mates, present Yarnbury members and Colts and a junior squad touring from Abertillery RFC in Wales. Off the pitch attractions included a cake stand, barbecue, tombola, raffle, a couple of “guess how many Easter eggs” competitions and an auction generously supported by local businesses. Most entertaining, though not for the plucky volunteer, was “chestwax Suanu Lebari for £5”. The day raised £3300 – more than double last year’s total, and included one benefactor’s donation of his wages on the day. Here are the rugby shots – the social side can be seen on our Spotted! pages.

The club continue to attract new fans and have placed a Student and Staff offer for all universities and colleges in Leeds and Bradford for the final home match of the season against Bishop’s Stortford on April 21.

The offer allows staff and students entry to the match, a pie and a pint all for just £10 on a day when Guiseley may need to win for the league title. Make sure to take a student or staff ID Card to show at the turnstiles and quote COVERED at the gate too!

Mods in Hot Form

Leeds City Juniors Vs. Farsley AFC

Leeds City Juniors U/14s went to Farsley Celtic to play in the Garforth League Supplementary Cup Semi-Final on Sunday 1 April and, against all the odds, pulled off one of the results of their lives! With no subs and several players far from fully fit, second division Leeds City went head to head with first division high flyers, Farsley Celtic. They battled hard to grind out a 1-0 win to secure a place in the final against first division leaders Pontefract St Josephs. Sheer grit, determination and discipline from a Leeds side also in with a good chance of winning

Leeds City Juniors U14 Squad

the league this season saw them win through to the final which will be played at Ossett Town Football Club on 20 May. Manager Jem Lee was over the moon with his team who he believes will give St Joe’s a really good run for their money come the final. “If we show that sort of passion, desire and team spirit, we can give anyone a good game, and I'd back my lads all the way to lift the Supplementary Cup this year!” This has been probably Leeds City's best season so far and some silverware at the end would be just reward for the hard work and efforts put in by players and coaches alike. As ever......Come on Leeds!

Earthquakes’ Storm to Trophy Final

Aireborough have just two matches left of their season including a trip to 2nd placed Sheffield Medics before entertaining mid-table Old Rishworthians in the final game of the season on April 21.

Old Modernians FC continued their end of season burst as they beat Calverley United 2-0 away at Aireborough have Rotherham Pheonix and Baildon Victoria Park in the Yorkshire Amateur League just behind them in the league and looking to strike Senior B. on any lapses Aire may make in their final two matches. Fourth place Baildon approach their final Mods had been lethal approaching the fixture and two matches having won 15 in a row and travel to entered the game off the back of a thumping 8-1 lowly Hessle before hosting Sheffield Medics in a over Collingham Juniors. tasty encounter on the last day. The hosts never really got started and Modernians took the lead [pictured] with a scrappy goal from a couple of yards following a spilt cross from the left hand side. Calverley’s closest effort of the first half came from a Matthew Hall free-kick that forced the Modernians keeper into a decent save. After a stern talking to at half-time by the home team manager, it could have seen the home side make a vast improvement, but Mods forced them into making a hatful of mistakes and Calverley were again guilty of contributing to their own downfall when early in the second period Modernians notched their second goal. Calverley tried to mount a comeback but were limited by a solid Modernians back four. A looping header from the hosts’ substitute looked to give them hope but his effort hit the bar as Calverley tried in vain.

For Aireborough, their fortunes lie in their own hands and know that winning their last two matches should be enough to hold off the chasing pack behind them to finish in a highly respectable 3rd place.

Aerial, Satellites & Solar

Mods currently sit in 4th at the time of writing but with a game in hand on 3rd and just a point behind, Mods are eight points from 2nd but will see a 3rd placed finish as a successful season in the main.

Horsforth St Margaret's under-13s Earthquakes’ bounced back from a disappointing exit in the Garforth Cup to book their place in the Leeds & District F.A Millennium Trophy final. The cup final will see the side running out at Elland Road to play Pannal Sports on Monday 14th May. 49 sides started the competition and Horsforth will be counting down the days to the final next month. The Earthquakes have beaten five sides in their run to the final, scoring an incredible 21 goals including a magnificent 11-0 win over Pudsey Juniors with striker Max Ryan netting seven. At the other end St Margaret’s have been miserly in defence, conceding just three times!

Aireborough RUFC continued their excellent campaign by winning all four matches in March and see them occupy third place in the Yorkshire Division Three table.
