Contributors Ivor Hughes vicTORIA kulczycka Dawn Kilner Eric Wells Hello and welcome to this month’s edition of Covered. It’s HOT, HOT, HOT as I sit here and write this. Too hot, some might say. Some, but not me – without this glorious weather many of the events and activities we’ve had the pleasure of visiting recently wouldn’t have been so well attended. Take a look through our Diary Dates for details of upcoming activities over the next couple of months. If you’re stuck for something to do with the kids this summer, check out our Health & Wellbeing section for some inspiration - you’ll find plenty to do in and around the city. Our inaugural Fashion, Hair and Beauty feature went down a storm last month – thanks for all your positive comments. See this month’s FHAB for more tips and for our feature on Leeds based James Seward, designer to the stars! The summer months present all sorts of opportunities for thieves as we’re more likely to leave doors and windows open. I should know, only this morning some toe-rag has cleared all the loose change out of a drawer in my car (about £2.78). My fault entirely, I shouldn’t have left the window down and should have taken the advice put forth in our Property Matters section this month. As the feature explains ‘It only takes a minute’. I hope you enjoy this month’s edition – packed with plenty of unique, hyper-local news, views and features as usual. If you want free and favourable publicity for your event or activity, let us know – we’re proud to support the community! Editorial and advertising deadline for the next edition is: 02/08/13 Until next month,

The Fleece at Otley The Fleece at Otley may look like your average unassuming pub from the roadside, but this little gem has many hidden depths, which are definitely worth closer inspection. Owned by nearby, award winning Wharfebank Brewery since 2011, The Fleece was re-invented as a good example of what today's gastro-pub should offer, fine dining and an excellent selection of drinks in a comfortable, yet stylish environment. The design and layout of the main bar area works well around two seasonal feature points, a central roaring fireplace for winter time and a sliding glass wall, which opens in summertime to offer better views over the River Wharfe below. And, if you fancy a closer look at the river, then lunch on the terraced beer garden could well be for you. With a light, summery menu designed especially for this tranquil, little suntrap, it's very easy to wile away the hours whilst enjoying a few pints of Wharfebank's finest.

the Goat's Cheese Most popular dishes include Onion Bruschetta and Red

Head chef, Simon Miller, has obvious flair and love of creativity. Having trained at The Box Tree in Ilkley, known for it’s connection with Marco Pierre White, Simon then went on to the renowned Antony's Leeds, before bringing his enthusiastic and fresh approach to The Fleece. Not shy to experiment, he recently teamed up with Vanilli’s Harrogate to produce a Wharfebank Stout sorbet, which compliments the seasonal dishes on offer here. Pretty much everything is prepared onsite by the team, from the chocolate and almond brownies to the handmade chips, and all of the sauces which help to bring the flavours alive. as a starter, whilst the rump steak with blue cheese butter is always a popular main. All products are sourced locally, where good quality is available, and the Texcel lamb has been chosen from Waterford House Farm because of the consistent quality and flavour. And if you're uncertain which beer or wine will best compliment your food, then Bar Manager, Oliver Renton, is on hand to help out. Oli also brings a wealth of experience, having managed his familyowned bars before going on to work at Wharfebank Brewery to expand his knowledge of cask ales and the brewing process, then taking up his role at The Fleece. Oli’s a man who likes to get involved and when we arrived he was tending the impressive flower baskets, which he proudly informed us he’d planted himself. If it all sounds a little too decadent and expensive for a mid-week treat, then you'd be wrong. Whilst the varied menus and dishes are carefully prepared and presented, they are also affordable. And whilst the decor is stylish, with a good mix of old and new, the main emphasis is on comfort, even extending to the 'tap room', which really isn't any less inviting than the rest of the pub, but does welcome walkers

and dogs. There's also a good selection of games, newspapers and chatter. Cosy, just how a local pub should be. For further details visit the website www.fleeceotley.co.uk, Facebook or Twitter @FleeceOtley. And if you'd like to know more about Wharfebank Brewery, then look out for our forthcoming feature.

Local Food

Ingredients: Buy Local We’re used to finding ingredients on the supermarket shelves all year round but out of season produce is likely to have travelled miles - often thousands of miles. Asparagus, for example, is wonderful stuff when it’s grown, picked and served in Yorkshire. The out of season supermarket varieties that travel from as far away as Peru are dire in comparison. Any restaurant worth its salt will base its menu on the current seasons offerings so follow suit – buy local and

7

buy seasonal. Over the next few weeks you’ll find that broad beans, cherries, cucumber, cos lettuce, raspberries, plums, radishes, strawberries and watercress are all at their best. Duck is in season and grouse are (pardon the pun) fair game from the 12th of August too. Pop along to your local farm shop or farmers’ market. You’ll find the produce will have traveled less and will taste all the better for it. What’s more, you’ll get plenty of genuine good service, value and advice from independent traders who have a passion for produce, not for profit.

Check mackerel for bones. Next mix water and salt and pour over mackerel. Leave for 3 hours. Bring vinegar and sugar to the boil, add thyme and coriander. Thinly slice carrots and onions, add to boiling water for 30 seconds and then straight into iced water before adding to the vinegar and allowing to cool. After 3 hours remove mackerel from salt brine and run under a cold water to remove salt. Pour over vinegar, clingfilm and leave in fridge for 2 days. Serve sliced with beetroot salad.

Braise lamb in stock on low heat for 3-4 hours, until tender. Blanch carrots and asparagus and cook new potatoes with a little thyme and butter. Reduce lamb jus by half, slice tomatoes in half and add to lamb jus with a knob of butter and basil. Set aside. Remove lamb from stock, and roast in a hot pan. To prepare the garnish, melt remaining butter, add carrots, asparagus, thyme, beans, and sliced ham and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add mushrooms and garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes longer, season with salt, pepper, add dash truffle oil. Wilt spinach with little water in a separate pan. To plate the lamb, put the spinach in the middle and arrange the garnish around the outside. Thickly slice the lamb and place on the spinach, pour over the lamb jus and serve.

100 ml water 250g sugar 3 large egg yolks 400g cream cheese 200g double cream 500g strawberries 1/2 lemon (juiced)

Cream Cheese Parfait with Strawberry Soup Serves 8 Make a pate bomb, heat 150g sugar and 100ml water to 121 degrees. Beat egg yolks until thick and white. When syrup reaches the correct temperature slowly add the syrup to the eggs, with blender on high, to remove the air. Blend until the egg mix thickens up and goes cold to the touch. Whip cream to soft ribbon stage, beat the cream cheese with a whisk and fold in the cream, then fold in the cooled egg mix. Clingfilm a terrine mould and pour in the mix, cover with cling film and leave overnight in freezer to firm. To make the strawberry soup, remove the green stalks from the strawberries. Blend with the rest of the sugar and the lemon juice until smooth, then sieve.

10 Animal Matters

Animal matters Everyone knows that you shouldn’t leave animals unattended in a car on a hot day. But what should you do as the days get warmer?

Combat Fleas, Ticks, Mites and Flystrike

Time outdoors in hot weather increases the likelihood of getting these. To combat give animals a suitable product regularly to reduce their risk, keep their sleeping and eating areas clean and check daily for any signs of infection.

Increase Water and Shade and Do Not Over Exercise

If possible on hot days keep animals indoors or make sure they have plenty of shade and water if they have to stay outside. Keep f ish tanks and bird/small animal cages out of direct sunlight. Remember conser vatories can also heat up quickly. When walking your dog take a portable water bowl and don’t over exercise. Dogs will collapse before giving up, at which point it may be too late.

Signs of overheating include increased panting/ breathing, listlessness and drooling.

Stop Skin Problems including Sunburn

Pets with fine/light coloured hair may need petsafe sunblock, particularly to noses and ears to stop them burning. Be careful of hot surfaces like pavements and sand as pets can burn their paws. Hair can be trimmed but no shorter than one inch to keep sun protection and groom frequently.

Don’t Forget…

If you see an animal in distress contact the RSPCA immediately and give the animal relief by providing water and shelter. For more information on any of the above contact your vet or local friendly pet shop.

Animal Matters

Pets Need Holidays Too

Top Tips: 1

If you’re planning a break away you’ll have a long checklist to get through. Passports, tickets, currency, travel insurance and sun cream will all be high on the list. What about your beloved family friends of the four legged variety? It’s best to put them top of your list and make arrangements sooner rather than later.

Check your pet’s vaccination schedule is up to date to prevent infection being spread. Most reputable kennels, catteries or sitters will not accept dogs without up to date jabs. To help your pet settle in, take bedding and

2 toys that will remind the animal of home.

If your pet is undergoing any routine

3 treatment make sure you’ve got plenty of supplies in to leave with them.

Elaine Scrompf of The Dog House, Leeds gives us advice about making sure your pets get a good break too. “At the Dog House we look after family pets in our homes. Our team holds all the relevant licenses from leeds City Council - you should ensure that anyone you entrust with your pet holds a Home Boarding License and that they are fully insured. A huge love of pets is a good indicator of how your pet will be cared for too! Before you embark on your holiday, the Dog House invites owners and their pets to visit so you can see how settled and happy your pets are and then you can enjoy your own holiday, guilt free.”

11

4

Make sure that the company or person caring for your pet whilst you’re away has the contact details for your usual vet – care records may be invaluable in the unlikely event of a crisis.

5

Ensure that the pet’s regular food is in plentiful supply – by keeping things as routine as possible you will reduce the amount of stress placed on the flat.

6

Don’t worry! If you choose the right place for your pet then you should be able to enjoy your holiday and your pet will also enjoy theirs. Animals will pick up on your stress so if you show that you’re not worried, they’re less likely to be too. The Dog House is a family business, operated since 2004 and they also offer an excellent professional dog walking service. All walkers are fully insured, police checked and are very experienced at looking after precious pets. If your day is filled with meetings at work and rushing around with the kids, then you should take steps to ensure that your hound gets the exercise he needs – a dog walker would do just that.

A huge love of pets is a good indicator of how your pet will be cared for too!

Car Boot Sales – a Greener Way to Fight Austerity

Fifteen of the forty or so Abbey Runners that turned up for their usual Tuesday night run at Adel Sports and Social Club – fewer than usual due to the rain.

Summer is eventually upon us. With it comes a wealth of seasonal car boot sales. Well run car boots provide sellers an opportunity to clear space and raise more than a few pounds in the process. Greener than consigning the stuff to landfill and more immediate than a card on a supermarket community notice board. For most buyers there is money to be saved. Why commit hundreds of pounds to household goods, toys or baby stuff when some of the items on your shopping list might turn up at a fraction of the new prices? It’s worth taking a look. And some buyers can make a profit by selling on – often online or at another boot or market.

Abbey Runners Take a Day Off…

There is a weekly summertime Sunday boot at the crossroads on the Harrogate side of Leeds Bradford Airport and another adjacent to Pannal roundabout. The ones at Otley Farmers’ and Pudsey Markets are all year round (Otley’s runs from 12 until 4). Occasional summertime boots include Ilkley Grammar School PTA at Ben Rhydding Cricket Club (21 July), Ilkley Cricket Club (28 July) and Abbey Runners came into existence over 25 Burley in Wharfedale Cricket Club (1 September).

years ago – so long ago that chairman Martin Browne isn’t entirely certain how the group got its name; “We train at Leeds Met and our last base was Lawnswood YMCA. We moved to Adel a little over ten years ago.”

Emmerdale star Jane Cox (right, Lisa Dingle) joined forces with sister Amanda at Otley boot in June, raising money for charity.

The club now has 160 members, drawn from across north Leeds. For all ages and abilities - from social/beginners to fell running and triathletes - they meet at Adel Sports and Social Club every Tuesday evening from 6.45. Further details about the club, other events and membership contacts can be found either on the web – abbeyrunners.co.uk – or by turning up on the evening. Most of Abbey’s own runners took the day off on 7 July, at least from running, when they hosted the Eccup 10 miles Road Race. Started in 1993, the race has been in its present format since 2005. It is recognised and rated by the national running community and incorporates the Yorkshire County and Yorkshire Veterans Athletics Associations official 10 mile championships for both men and women.

Finance Matters Editor Chris Barnham investigates financial issues that might affect the residents of this area. If somebody asks you to be an executor of their will you will likely see this as a potential hassle, but also I hope as an honour, as an expression of faith that you will carry out their wishes diligently after they have gone.

A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

The same is true if you are asked to be a Trustee, though the responsibility doesn’t just begin when the “Settlor” dies. Trusts can be used to protect assets not just from inheritance tax but also from bankruptcy and divorce, or to support those who might not be able to earn an income themselves such as those with disabilities. They are a means to keep control of assets without them formally belonging to any one individual until that time that the Trustees decide. Becoming a Trustee involves more though than signing a piece of paper, it means taking on a legal and moral duty to act in the best interests of the trust. In most cases where the life of the trust is likely to be over five years this will mean investing the assets properly, using an investment advisor to cover your duty of care but also to make your life considerably easier. Trusts need monitoring by professionals, but this doesn’t mean they need expensive annual audits by an accountant if the right format is used. Trusts needn’t be complex or expensive to either set up or to run. With the right structuring trusts can solve a lot of problems without causing headaches, letting you complete your duties according to the trust that has been placed in you.

Leeds Author’s New Series Enhanced, the first entry in the new series “The Aescar Chronicles” follows the story of Alexander Howell, a young man who joins the army to provide for his family and create a better life for his beloved Jessica. The exciting adventure thriller unfolds in the fictional nation of Aescar, where a war with neighbouring Darien that has lasted a generation and a huge spike in population growth threatens already overstretched food supplies. The State, Aescar’s seemingly benevolent totalitarian rulers, have taken charge of food distribution, utilities, manufacturing and many other aspects of everyday life for the sake of the war effort. Aescar’s burgeoning population is divided into two distinct social tiers, the Citizens, who enjoy most of the freedoms of any normal society and the happily oppressed Churls, who must apply for government permission to marry, breed and own property. As the son of Churl parents, one of the few ways for Alexander to become a Citizen is to serve in the armed forces. But joining the Aescaran army comes with a price, or as The State would tell it, a gift. The higher brain functions of every soldier are chemically suppressed and replaced by a synaptic transceiver which connects them to a single, central mind operated by the mysterious and enigmatic Controllers. In this way, a soldier will never experience pain or fear and crucially, will never refuse an order. However, when Alexander is accidentally set free of his Enhancement, he is unwillingly recruited into the AFA, a fledgling rebellion against The State. He is forced to accompany Blue Six, the rebel militia’s ragtag elite, who fear and despise him in equal measure as they encounter starving bandits, abandoned cities, the unflinching Enhanced soldiers of The State and a secret that will break apart their entire understanding of the world around them. Enhanced is the creation of Chris Tasker, an author born and bred in Bramley, Leeds. Chris has been fascinated by storytelling for all of his twenty eight years and spent much of his childhood scribbling down stories and ideas as they came into his head. A product of Intake High School and later Leeds Met University, Chris’ main passion at school was history, particularly Russia in the 1920s. His biggest influences as an author are Bernard Cornwell and

C.S. Forester. Chris is a very proud Yorkshireman, much of his inspiration for the fictional Aescar came from growing up in the White Rose County. Enhanced is available in paperback from Amazon, and as a download for Amazon Kindle, Kobo and Kindle for iPad.

competition We’ve got a personalised copy of Chris’ book to give away to one lucky reader. Simply tell us: Who is the main character in Enhanced? Is it: A: Alexander Howell or B: Alexander the Meerkat? Send your answer to: Enhanced, Covered, Butonia House, Clayton Wood Close, LS16 6QE or email: info@covered-magazine.net (The winner will be picked at random from all correct entrants. The Editor’s decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into).

Adel Neighbourhood Forum

The Focus begins

The Neighbourhood Forum will, as you read this, be consulting with the Adel community through six Focus Groups. The purpose is to clarify its views on future land development in the area and the impact on local services and infrastructure. These groups will build upon the findings from the successful “Open day” held earlier on 20th April this year. Although they will work from a national brief their objective will be flesh out the needs of Adel residents, businesses and those with an interest in the area. The Focus groups will harness local knowledge with further additional research as the needs are clarified. The Focus Groups are covering the main issues of Housing, Traffic, Education Provision, Heritage and Environment, Community Services and Business Support. It was clear from earlier work that residents love the leafy, green environment and its vibrant community life. High on the concerns were the impact of developments on traffic flows (or lack of them), primary school education provision and protecting the historical setting of the Grade 1 listed Adel Parish Church. Please contact Ian Bond (bondster@btopenworld. com) or Nick Brown ( nick.brown@2B-architecture. com) with your views or interest on these or indeed on any relevant issues. Also check out: www. adelneighbourhoodforum.co.uk for the latest news.

Post Natal Exercise One of the most frequently asked questions is “how do I get my tummy back?” The simplest rule is to not rush things and over strain. Doing 100’s of curl ups is not the answer to a flat tummy and will over strain your abdominal muscles. Here are a few simple exercises to wake up the abdominal muscles and strengthen the back muscles: Pelvic tilts are a great way to get your tummy back!

Pelvic Tilts Laying on your back with knees bent, press the spine into the floor, tilt the pelvis towards your tummy button. Draw the tummy muscles towards the spine and hold for 6 seconds. Release and repeat

Static Contractions On your hands and knees in a ‘box’ shape. Ensure your spine is in its ‘natural or neutral’ position. Pull the tummy up towards the spine. Hold for up to 8 seconds Release and repeat

Head Lift Place a pillow under your head Draw the navel to the spine and lift up your head as you breath out Ensure the tummy does not push out. Lower and repeat

Have your 6 week check up prior to starting an exercise programme. Doing these exercises daily along with walking, swimming and other activities will ensure you stay fit and healthy physically and mentally.

Keeping the Kids Active This Summer Proposals have just been put forward to allow schools to set their own holidays, meaning the potential end of the six week break. For now though how are you going to keep the family active this summer without break ing the bank? Thankfully in Leeds there’s plenty going on. Here are some ideas to suit all budgets and tastes.

1

Breeze Festivals

If you’ve never been the Breeze Festivals run by Leeds City Council have an excellent range of activities geared to everyone from 0-19 years, including a portable climbing wall, dance competitions, mini go-karts, craft tents, live music and more. What’s more the festivals are totally free. All you need to do is bring a Breezecard or if you haven’t got one sign up on the day. Breeze on Tour is at Roundhay Park on 7th & 8th August or Kirkstall Abbey on 14th & 15th August.

2

Rodley Nature Reserve

For a quieter day out, Rodley Nature Reserve is a bit of a hidden gem. The Wetlands Reserve has been created on a floodplain in Kirkstall Valley. The reserve is home to wildfowl and waders on migration and younger children will enjoy pond dipping and exploring. Entry is free whilst there is an opportunity to book on to night time bat walks with an expert. The reserve can be found via a brown sign over a swing bridge leading over the canal from Rodley Town Street.

Summer Sports Camps

No longer do school, college and University facilities sit empty across the summer, instead playing host to range of sports camps run by qualified coaches. Prices can start from as little as £12 per day at Trinity Fitness for their multi-sports Holiday Sports Camps, £48 for a 4 days at one of the many Leeds United holiday courses or £57.50 on a WR Active Learning course.

4

Family Skating Session

For something a bit different take the family roller skating. SK8 Leeds Academy offer family sessions on a weekend with lessons for those a bit wobbly on their feet whether it be for toddlers or adults. When they or you are ready there’s even a chance to get retro with a roller disco.

Chevin Forest Park

Finally another free activity, if you can resist the Yorkshire Dales ice cream van in the car park, is to take the family on the Chevin. The Bridleways provide opportunities for walking or mountain biking, whilst Surprise View offers views all the way to York on a clear day. Can’t persuade the children to go for a family walk? Then tell them if they go they’ll get to see an elephant in the woods (one of eight timber sculptures on the Heritage Time Trail). Froebelian Future Athletes Horsforth’s Froebelian School held its Centenary Sports Day events recently which included half a day of competition and fun for the pre prep (ages 3 – 6) and a full day for the juniors (ages 7 to 11). There was a buzz of excitement as the children gathered in their respective house teams and opened the day’s proceedings with a cheerleading performance, which the older children had written and choreographed themselves. The pre prep enjoyed traditional races such as egg and spoon, balancing a beanbag on the head and the sack race, while the juniors took part in athletic events such as long jump, throwing and sprinting. There were some very impressive individual results with Kate Mighell from Year 5 beating all the girls in the long jump with an impressive jump of 3.6 metres, Sanele Kweyama powered to the finish line winning his sprint races with ease, while in the throwing event the girls showed unbelievable strength sending the balls hurtling down the field.

Year 2 boys competing in the sack race. Strong competition in the long jump.

It really was a closely fought competition for the individual medals as well as the house cup, so close in fact that it came down to the last nail-biting relay race to decide the house cup winners who were Windsor winning by just 4 points ! Holly Barber of Year 6 won the Victrix Ludorum medal from the girls and Sanele Kweyama of Year 5 the Victor Ludorum medal from the boys. The Headmaster, Mr Tranmer, said “it was so wonderful to see so much enthusiasm with all the children eagerly taking part. I was very impressed to see such outstanding individual results and feel we may have some future national athletes in the making”

History Matters Who are they? Outside the Black Bull Horsforth. Over the door is written the name of W.Stead publican of the Black Bull in 1888. He left around 1900 aged sixty five with his wife Emma and family to live in Holbeck where he found employment as a teasel setter. Charles Somers a former bus conductor succeeded him. Charles had an American wife Emmie Louise Rossvally born in Detroit. In 1891 Emmie was living with her German born father in Potternewton Leeds. We can surmise that the photograph was taken on the occasion of Mr William Stead (the old gent on the left of the doorway) and his wife Emma (with the apron) exchanging tenancies with Mr Charles Somers and Emmie around 1900. Emmie must be the sophisticated lady in the American style spotted dress age thirty nine. Charles is to her right with the heavy moustache, and the white whiskered chap with the tall hat and sharper cut clothes is her father aged around seventy two. Emmie Louise Somers was a widow on the 1911 census

the Licensed Victular of the Black Bull. Charles died in 1910 age forty seven.

READER TESTIMONIAL After a life-time of working in newspapers, your little gift through my letterbox is both welcome and awaited. There are no dirty newsprint fingers as your mag is beautiful, quality, glossy paper and the A5 size makes it perfect to read anywhere. The content is full of great local news and in the last edition I found out about Horsforth Cricket Club’s open day which I took my little Grandson along to. Without your mag I would never have found out! The adverts have become my Bible, and I refer to them for everything. I have used brilliant, local, reliable contractors and have found lots of amazing deals which have saved me money - giving me excellent local service and a feel good factor of supporting local businesses. To be eco-friendly I share my mag, it is read from cover to cover first and then passed on to family who might need this or that, or simply enjoy “COVERED”. The name says it all, you've got it Covered!

Fashion, Hair And Beauty

Shimmer In Summer can be an awkward time for us Brits. Do we dress up or tone it down? And if we tone it down, how many of us can pull off hippy chic or boho babe as easy as Sienna Miller and Kate Moss without looking like a we've lost our blusher and forgotten how to take a shower? Here are Covered's 5 top tips for achieving a hot but natural look over the Hot Summer months.

1

Add Shimmer to Eyes

If you do go with the shimmery eye, don't go overboard with the shimmer. Apply shimmer to no more than 2 places. For example, shimmer your eyelids and your cheekbones but don't also add a batch of shimmer to your dĂŠcolletage, nobody likes a walking disco ball.

2

Highlighter Should Be Your Best Friend

Highlighting pens should be a staple of any girls make up bag. Here's how to apply: Put your chin to your chest and look into a mirror. Swipe a line of highlighter on the shadows, usually under the eye, along the nose and under the chin. Also apply a line above each brow, which will give the illusion of pulling your face up. Blend the lines in by dabbing with your middle finger.

Fashion, Hair And Beauty

nto Summer!

3

Mouth or the Eyes?

When choosing holiday makeup, decide if you're going to play up your eyes or your mouth. If you emphasize both, you'll risk looking like a clown. If you use a bright red lip, keep the face light and use only mascara and a light shadow on lids. Don't go overboard with bronzer, smokey eyes and blush. If you opt for a dark, smokey eye, lighten up lips with a light, sheer lipstick.

4

Groucho Marx a no-no...

You can have perfect makeup, but if your eyebrows are a mess, you'll look unfinished. A couple days before your holiday, get your brows waxed, threaded or tweezed. Keep them in place by spraying a bit of hairspray on your finger and running them over the brow or opt for a brow gel based product.

5

Oily Skin?

Carry Oil Blotting Papers, Not Powder. Apply powder before you head out to set make-up, but don't keep applying it during the night, it ends up caking up and looking mask-like. Blotting Papers are the oily girl's best friend. Press a paper to the oily spots and watch as the paper soaks up oil without messing your make-up. Keep the papers in your purse for touch ups as the night goes on. As always, if in doubt then bob into an independent local salon for good advice and the best in beauty treatment.

32 Fashion, Hair And Beauty

Farsley’s Designer to the Stars In the last issue of Covered we featured milliner Beth Hirst’s display of hats, found adjacent to the fashion show at Wetherby Racecourse Ladies’ Evening. Beth mentioned at the time that she shares a Farsley studio with dressmaker James Steward. We had to go and take a look – and found far more than anticipated. Thirteen years ago James, originally from Hull, moved to Leeds to set up the popular boutique 'Aqua Couture' in the city centre. His credentials were impeccable. He had graduated with a degree in fashion design and trained at a top Italian couture house located in the heart of Rome. He quickly made a name for himself creating one-off pieces for the Leeds fashionistas . Word spread beyond Leeds at national and then international level. James’ celeb fan list rapidly grew to include fashion icons such as the Spice Girls and Kylie Minogue. Having decided that his passion lay in the bespoke side of his business, rather than off-the-peg retail, James parted ways with Aqua Couture to concentrate on his own made to measure couture. That was soon to include a successful range of bridal wear, quite unlike anything that can be bought from boutiques. James received acclaim not only from his clientèle. For two years running, James Steward Couture was voted "Yorkshire Brides Couture Designer of the Year" and "Leeds Independent Designer of the Year". Nowadays, the only seasonal ranges James releases are at winter time, the core of his business being weddings – not just for the bride, but also for the bridesmaids and mothers of the bride and groom. CENSUS UNVEILS BIGGEST SURGE IN RENTING FOR A CENTURY Newly-released figures from the latest census have this month revealed the true scale of the shift from home ownership to renting among the English population. The number of private tenants has doubled between 2001 and 2011 – while the proportion who owns a home has fallen sharply. Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that as many as one-in-five households in England – that’s around 1.2 million – was renting privately on Census Day in 2011. The number of families who owned their own home has plummeted by 13 per cent since the last survey a decade earlier. In some parts of the country, the number of renters in the community has now overtaken the number of homeowners. We have not witnessed such a big surge in the popularity of renting since 1918, when a dusting down of the history books reveals that as much as 77 per cent of property was let privately. With Leeds among the top five rental destinations in England, these new figures mark a seachange in the

way we now choose to live our lives – but, crucially, also highlight the need for a greater regulation of letting agents. This will help prevent less scrupulous agents from taking advantage of the unprecedented level of consumer demand – and leave many trusting clients out-of-pocket never to see their money again. Standards, quite rightly, will come under the public, press and political spotlight like never before. Renting should be a positive experience for both landlord and tenant alike. So, whether you are a landlord or a tenant, it’s more important than ever to go through an accredited agent. They are best placed to guide you through the complex rental process and accompanying legislation – as well as being able to offer complete peace of mind. Look out for agents who are members of ARLA for ultimate reassurance – they must adhere to a strict code of conduct as well as offering client money protection and redress schemes, which can protect you if things go wrong. The SAFEagent kitemark will also help you identify them.

36 Property Matters

It Only Takes A Minute This month we take a look at Home Security so who better to ask for advice on securing your home (other than a burglar!) than the guys who often deal with the aftermath – West Yorkshire Police. Here they give us their tips for deterring intruders. Burglary remains a major priority for the Force and West Yorkshire Police continue with their ‘It Only Takes a Minute’ campaign to encourage people to think about home security and ‘lock up or lose out!’. The campaign is titled ‘It Only Takes a Minute’ as it only takes a minute to lock your doors and windows … but it's also the same amount of time that it could take a burglar to enter your house and steal your belongings. Food for thought. In most cases, the offenders who commit burglary are opportunists. They see an open door or window and they take their chance. Believe it or not, nearly half of all burglaries are committed through an open door or window. Reduce the risk of burglary by taking some simple precautions:

Most burglaries happen when a property is empty. Look like you’re in, even when you're out: light up your home and fit low energy bulbs, using timer switches to turn them on when you are out - thieves don't like being seen.

Improve the security of doors - exterior doors front and back should be in good condition, fit well and the frames securely fixed to the masonry. Consider installing bolts at the top and bottom of the exterior door, and perhaps a door viewer and door chain on the main door.

Improve the security of windows - fit all ground floor and any other accessible windows with key operated window locks - remember to remove keys from locked windows and keep them out of sight.

Sheds and garages contain tools to help break into your home - don’t leave them unlocked.

Dispose of packaging for expensive items; don’t advertise what’s in your house.

Register your property on www.immobilise. com - a FREE property register, so that if your property is stolen and recovered by the Police, it can be returned to you.

Download free tracking software onto mobile phones and laptops.

Keep doors and windows locked, even when you are in. Try to change your habit if you don’t lock your door behind you.

Door chimes and burglar alarms will deter a burglar.

Never leave spare keys in a convenient hiding place, like under the door mat or in a flower pot - a thief will look there first.

It only takes a minute to hide valuables out of view - do not tempt the thief.

Consider looking at your home through burglars eyes …what could you improve?

Keep doors and windows locked even when in the garden.

Don’t leave garden tools outside, as they can be used by burglars.

There are many reputable local businesses featured in Covered who may offer free advice and quotations for upgrading windows, doors, locks and security in general. If you’re in doubt about the security of your home then call in a professional to take a look.

Town Council thanks A very big “Thank You“ to everyone who was involved with the Horsforth Gala. The Gala committee, and their many volunteers, continue to make this event an entertaining and successful annual event – in spite of the unpredictable weather! Leeds City Council has published the Issues and Options for the Site Allocations Plan for public consultation. This is an 8 week public consultation period which started on Monday 3rd June and ends at 5pm on Monday 29th July.

Horsforth In Bloom The Yorkshire in Bloom Judges visited Horsforth on the morning of Thursday 4th July. Members of the Group are pictured outside Horsforth Museum with the Judges. The Group would like to thank all residents and businesses who put on floral displays and helped to keep the Township tidy. They also thank all those who supported them at the Horsforth in Bloom Stall at the Horsforth Gala on Saturday 29th June by buying plants, raffle tickets and making donations. £158 was raised and this really helps the Group make a difference in Horsforth. The results of the Judge’s visit will not be known until later on the in year. Why not get involved and help the Group, they meet at 10am in the Museum on the 1st Saturday in the Month.

The consultation documents are available in the following ways: 1) Visit - www.leeds.gov.uk/siteallocations 2) Visit the Development Enquiry Centre at The Leonardo Building, 2 Rossington St, Leeds, LS2 8HD (Monday to Friday 08:30 - 17:00, except Wednesdays 10:00 - 17:00) 3) Visiting libraries and one-stop centres within the Leeds area. The financial matters of Horsforth Town Council are very carefully looked at and thought through by the Finance & General Purposes committee before they are put to the whole Council for consideration and approval. An example of this is that at the meeting of the whole Council on 29th May 2013, the Council voted to keep separate the money from the Local Council Tax Relief. £8,698 will be kept in reserves until such time as the Council comes to set the precept for next year. This money would then be used to keep the precept as low as possible. Have a good Summer, whether its at home or away. Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council

Stuart Andrew mp At the moment one of the most pressing concerns which urgently needs addressing in our area is the worrying lack of school places available for local children. I have been approached on numerous occasions at my surgery meetings in Calverley and Pudsey by anxious parents who are concerned that their children will not be allocated spaces at nearby schools. With a growing population in my constituency as a result of the increase of housing developments in the area and plans to build even more over the next decade, there is a desperate need to address this issue as the current system is just not sustainable. We have seen changes at Newlaithes and Featherbank schools in Horsforth to try to address the issue and most recently Leeds City Council has launched a public consultation, which ends on July 12th, of their plans to expand Guiseley Infant and Nursery School by increasing pupil capacity from September 2015. Also included in these proposals is a plan that the Infant School would take children up to the age of 11, as opposed to the current age of seven. I recently attended a meeting with worried parents who are against the proposals and heard their very valid concerns which I fully empathise with. I, along with the Guiseley councilors, have jointly written to Leeds City Council asking that a new school is built in Guiseley. Extra school places are desperately needed but the current council proposals are not the answer especially considering that a huge amount of disruption that will be caused to pupils and staff in order to provide an extra 30 places a year which is simply not enough considering the extra houses are expected to be built in and around the Guiseley area over the next decade. We need an option that works for the community which is why building a new school is the best and only feasible option.

Environment patrol officer Tony Murphy (far left), dog warden Abi Sandham (second from right) and Councillor Mark Dobson (far right) met Mark Morris and his dog Sage on a recent visit to Nunroyd Park to highlight the importance of picking up after your dog.

PICK UP OR PAY UP Leeds City Council continue their new, firmer approach to dog fouling enforcement with frequent patrols by the council’s team of enforcement officers and officers from specialist environmental firm 3gs, who continue to target parts of West and North Leeds. The patrols act as a reminder to the public to clean up after their dogs and to put their litter in bins provided. Officers on patrol will issue a £75 penalty to anyone caught dropping rubbish or failing to pick up after their dog. Despite numerous dog waste bins and general litter bins – bagged dog waste can go in any council bin - dog fouling is still a city wide issue that people are increasingly fed up with and the council hopes that by encouraging more responsible behaviour, this will help to tackle the annual £8 million bill for street cleaning. Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City’s Council’s executive member for the environment, said: “We hope that members of the public will understand and support our decision for giving out these £75 penalties. If they do the right thing, putting litter in the bin and picking up their dog’s mess, then they do not need to worry as this will not affect them. “The public will hopefully be pleased that we are taking stronger actions against those that do litter or fail to clean up after their dogs and lead to the complaints regarding the city’s cleanliness. “With the co-operation of residents, visitors and businesses, we hope to see a great improvement throughout Leeds with high standards of cleanliness.”

NEWS FROM SAFE HAVEN Is an address an important issue, does where you live determine your future or is it the place where you sit that satisfies the media? A seat in the House of Commons perhaps or a seat on the board, does that signify our place in today’s society as being perfect or not? NO! The only interpretation that can ever be derived is that you are one with yourself and all those around you. Think of a society where friends stood together throughout, where angels met with men and conversed on a daily basis, where marriages were sacred and there was never any doubt or confusion as to who loves who and how. Can society recognise that maybe, just maybe something, somewhere long ago went very wrong and misshaped our futures in to the horrors that we see all too clearly today? Opinions change and from time to time individuals come up with various solutions, but not anymore… this is God’s time and He wishes for to see a significant

change take place. It’s time to stop and think …do you want the old way or a brand new start? We at Safe Haven are prepared for the rush of requests for help we are about to receive and we are willing to step into the breach of real issues affecting real people. Will you also help? Can you find a reason in your heart of hearts to stand by and do nothing or can you listen carefully for that voice of reason which says to you …it’s time to help someone. You can help in many ways; you can donate furniture and food, be a volunteer, visit our warehouse, make a purchase, tell the people you meet that we’re here to help them. Till next month….God Bless!

Abbey Inn Beer Festival – Scorchio! Some pessimists - or realists if you like - might have thought that summer was all over following the sunshine that had blessed Horsforth Gala and all seasonal outdoor events during the preceding weekend. But no. During the first weekend in July north Leeds was basking in bright sunshine in the mid-eighties (in old money). Perhaps the only people not best pleased at Abbey Inn’s annual summer festival were some of the live music acts in the marquee – everyone else under the same canvas, notably the bar staff, were able to take breaks as and when. Covered magazine always enjoys supporting Abbey Inn events, be they real ale festivals or other themed events. Though the real ale festivals are, arguably cases of gilding the lily – Abbey Inn is never short of its own wide range of the stuff and is considered by CAMRA to be a jewel in Leeds’ real ale crown. Covered was also delighted to say hello to Abbey’s new landlord, Andy Cazaux (in the pic feeding a friend a sausage); “So far so good. The festival has been great exposure for Abbey Inn – and, for that matter, the sixty real ales, twenty ciders and numerous other specialist lager and fruit beers we’re carrying this weekend. Our next themed weekend is in September – a hoedown with country and western music and all the trimmings.”

Named Gimbal, the app features 28 shorts by writers from around the world, with each story set in a different city. Martyn’s story, about an asylum-seeker in Leeds, was reissued as an e-book single in 2012 but first appeared in The Book of Leeds, published by Comma Press in 2006 as part of their Reading the City project – a series of anthologies featuring stories set in more than 50 urban locations. Gimbal has taken a selection of these stories, and others from Literature Across Frontiers’ Tramlines project, and made them available via a free app for iPhones, iPods and iPads.

FA Girls’ Football Festival Leeds Trinity was proud to host the FA Girls’ Football Festival on Wednesday 3 July. Over 260 girls, from 40 local school teams, took part in the free programme aimed at encouraging girls to get involved in the game. In association with Continental Tyres, the event was organised through the support of West Riding FA, the FA Tesco Skills team, and Leeds Trinity, who provided the venue. Sarah Studds, Sports Centre Manager at Leeds Trinity University, commented: "It was fantastic for Leeds Trinity University to be the

Alumni reunions There are two big reunions arranged for alumni of Leeds Trinity University this summer. The first reunion is for the University’s founding students, which means anyone who studied at Leeds Trinity (or TASC, as it was then known) between 1966 and the early 1970s. This reunion will take place at the Old Ball on the weekend of 13 July. If you're interested in coming, please contact Pat Mahoney at patmahoney@btinternet.com. The second reunion is a 30 year reunion, arranged for the class of 1983 (or anyone who was at the University around that time). This reunion will take place at The Lounge bar at Leeds Trinity on 31 August. Find out more by joining the Facebook group for the event: www.facebook.com/groups/tasc83reunion/.

Open Days Leeds Trinity held its first Open Day of 2013 on Wednesday 26 June and welcomed nearly 500 prospective students onto campus. Open Days are a chance to find out about all of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses on offer at the University. There are three more taking place on Wednesday 14 September, Saturday 9 October and Wednesday 19 October, and everyone’s welcome to attend. ILKLEY ANGLING ASSOCIATION Ilkley Angling Association was formed in 1887 and it is a small friendly open angling club controlling the fishing rights on the River Wharfe from Ilkley to Ben Rhydding and on two coarse fishing ponds situated between Ben Rhydding and Burley-in-Wharfedale. The scenic River Wharfe at Ilkley provides excellent fly fishing for wild Brown Trout and Grayling and bait fishing is also allowed. On 31st May this year a huge 26” (5lb+) Brown Trout was caught on the Ilkley stretch by a fly fisher and during the last winter Grayling up to just over 2lbs were caught. The two coarse fishing ponds contain Roach, Perch, Tench, Carp, Pike and Chub and the site is managed jointly with the Wharfedale Naturalists Society. Both the ponds and the river have a very interesting and varied set of flora & fauna. On the river most fishing days will see Dippers, Herons, Kingfishers, Goosanders and many ducks fly by and occasionally an Otter is spotted, even during daylight hours. The ponds are a particularly peaceful fishing location with some rare and interesting plant species present. Day permits costing £11 are available from the Ilkley Visitor Information Centre (opposite the station), the Ilkley Riverside Hotel and the Guiseley Angling Centre. The club has a resident qualified fly fishing instructor and the river at Ilkley is an ideal place to learn the art of fly fishing. Inexpensive season and day permits are available to fish the Ilkley Angling Association waters.

Some of North Leeds Mountain Bike Club setting off on a round trip from Calverley, taking in Esholt, on a 30k run.

On Yer Bike! Leeds Mountain Bikers, founded in 2008 and originally centred in Pudsey, meet on most Saturday mornings for runs of differing ability and all around 30k (18 miles in old money). And, uniquely, they appear to be the only sporting and social group in the area that conducts membership and scheduling entirely via social media – predominantly on meetup.com So it was entirely by luck and poor judgment that our photographer came across them one Saturday in May. He was on his way to a training session with Leeds United and Horsforth St Margaret’s and had gone to the wrong Calverley Lane – well, there are three. The group was about to set off on a route including Calverley Bridge, Esholt and Rodley – rated as a beginner’s route unless the terrain was wet. And wet it was. If you are web literate then it’s easy to sign up with Leeds-Mountain Bikers at meetup.com

Those of differing biking ability can then choose a Saturday when they’d like to join in. Recent rides have included Yeadon, Guiseley, Chevin Forest Park and Horsforth. For the rest of July and August, LMB meetings are further afield. The next ride in the Leeds area is on 7 September – the Meanwood Valley trail, taking in Adel Woods. Assembly is usually at 9.45 for a 10.00 start. LMB requires all riders to be properly dressed and equipped and takes a fee of £1 from each rider.
