Probate Matters? Most lawyers provide probate services for those who want them. But there is no law that says you have to have a lawyer. You choose. At the extremes, you can hire a lawyer to do the whole job, or you can do the whole job yourself without ever involving a lawyer at all. As a half way house, you can do it yourself but just ask a lawyer for advice from time to time on the bits you find trickier. The more traditional sort of lawyer might turn their nose up at this but we pride ourselves on being flexible and will tailor our services to your needs. So, how do you go about getting probate when somebody dies? You have to go off to the Probate Registry and you submit to the Probate Registry the original will, if there is one, and what they call the Oath, whether there is or there isn’t a will. An Oath is simply a document that proves that you are who you say you are, namely the person named in the will, if there is one, or the person entitled to take Probate if there isn’t, and in which you promise to carry out the duty of being the deceased’s representative in accordance with the law. Taking out these grants of probate, as they are called, is something lawyers do all the time , and a good lawyer will happily guide you through the process. When the process has been concluded you receive from the Probate Registry a nice shiny official certificate that says that you are now entitled to administer the affairs of the deceased. That certificate you can then take off to all the banks and so on with whom the deceased had any dealings so as to prove to them that you’re entitled to the relevant monies, etc.

The Fleece at Otley The Fleece at Otley may look like your average unassuming pub from the roadside, but this little gem has many hidden depths, which are definitely worth closer inspection. Owned by nearby, award winning Wharfebank Brewery since 2011, The Fleece was re-invented as a good example of what today's gastro-pub should offer, fine dining and an excellent selection of drinks in a comfortable, yet stylish environment. The design and layout of the main bar area works well around two seasonal feature points, a central roaring fireplace for winter time and a sliding glass wall, which opens in summertime to offer better views over the River Wharfe below. as a starter, whilst the rump steak with blue cheese butter is always a popular main. All products are sourced locally, where good quality is available, and the Texcel lamb has been chosen from Waterford House Farm because of the consistent quality and flavour. And if you're uncertain which beer or wine will best compliment your food, then Bar Manager, Oliver Renton, is on hand to help out. Oli also brings a wealth of experience, having managed his familyowned bars before going on to work at Wharfebank Brewery to expand his knowledge of cask ales and the brewing process, then taking up his role at The Fleece. Oli’s a man who likes to get involved and when we arrived he was tending the impressive flower baskets, which he proudly informed us he’d planted himself. If it all sounds a little too decadent and expensive for a mid-week treat, then you'd be wrong. Whilst the varied menus and dishes are carefully prepared and presented, they are also affordable. And whilst the decor is stylish, with a good mix of old and new, the main emphasis is on comfort, even extending to the 'tap room', which really isn't any less inviting than the rest of the pub, but does welcome walkers

1 lamb shoulder boned and rolled 6 mackerel fillets 500g wild mushrooms 300ml water 18 spears asparagus 100g salt 18 baby carrots 600g white wine vinegar 12 slices parma ham 200g sugar 3 cloves garlic 6 sprigs thyme 1 bag spinach Small handful coriander seeds 10 sprigs thyme Small handful juniper berries 1 slice onion (blanched) 2 sliced carrots (blanched)

200g broad beans 100g new potatoes 30g butter Tsp truff le oil 300ml lamb jus 1.5l lamb stock 10 cherry tomatoes 12 basil leaves

Check mackerel for bones. Next mix water and salt and pour over mackerel. Leave for 3 hours. Bring vinegar and sugar to the boil, add thyme and coriander. Thinly slice carrots and onions, add to boiling water for 30 seconds and then straight into iced water before adding to the vinegar and allowing to cool. After 3 hours remove mackerel from salt brine and run under a cold water to remove salt. Pour over vinegar, clingfilm and leave in fridge for 2 days. Serve sliced with beetroot salad.
Braise lamb in stock on low heat for 3-4 hours, until tender. Blanch carrots and asparagus and cook new potatoes with a little thyme and butter. Reduce lamb jus by half, slice tomatoes in half and add to lamb jus with a knob of butter and basil. Set aside. Remove lamb from stock, and roast in a hot pan. To prepare the garnish, melt remaining butter, add carrots, asparagus, thyme, beans, and sliced ham and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add mushrooms and garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes longer, season with salt, pepper, add dash truffle oil. Wilt spinach with little water in a separate pan. To plate the lamb, put the spinach in the middle and arrange the garnish around the outside. Thickly slice the lamb and place on the spinach, pour over the lamb jus and serve.
100 ml water 250g sugar 3 large egg yolks 400g cream cheese 200g double cream 500g strawberries 1/2 lemon (juiced)
Cream Cheese Parfait with Strawberry Soup Serves 8 Make a pate bomb, heat 150g sugar and 100ml water to 121 degrees. Beat egg yolks until thick and white. When syrup reaches the correct temperature slowly add the syrup to the eggs, with blender on high, to remove the air. Blend until the egg mix thickens up and goes cold to the touch. Whip cream to soft ribbon stage, beat the cream cheese with a whisk and fold in the cream, then fold in the cooled egg mix. Clingfilm a terrine mould and pour in the mix, cover with cling film and leave overnight in freezer to firm. To make the strawberry soup, remove the green stalks from the strawberries. Blend with the rest of the sugar and the lemon juice until smooth, then sieve.

Ingredients: Buy Local We’re used to finding ingredients on the supermarket shelves all year round but out of season produce is likely to have travelled miles - often thousands of miles. Asparagus, for example, is wonderful stuff when it’s grown, picked and served in Yorkshire. The out of season supermarket varieties that travel from as far away as Peru are dire in comparison. Any restaurant worth its salt will base its menu on the current seasons offerings so follow suit – buy
local and buy seasonal. Over the next few weeks you’ll find that broad beans, cherries, cucumber, cos lettuce, raspberries, plums, radishes, strawberries and watercress are all at their best. Duck is in season and grouse are (pardon the pun) fair game from the 12th of August too. Pop along to your local farm shop or farmers’ market. You’ll find the produce will have traveled less and will taste all the better for it. What’s more, you’ll get plenty of genuine good service, value and advice from independent traders who have a passion for produce, not for profit.

CENSUS UNVEILS BIGGEST SURGE IN RENTING FOR A CENTURY Newly-released figures from the latest census have this month revealed the true scale of the shift from home ownership to renting among the English population. The number of private tenants has doubled between 2001 and 2011 – while the proportion who owns a home has fallen sharply. Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that as many as one-in-five households in England – that’s around 1.2 million – was renting privately on Census Day in 2011. The number of families who owned their own home has plummeted by 13 per cent since the last survey a decade earlier. In some parts of the country, the number of renters in the community has now overtaken the number of homeowners. We have not witnessed such a big surge in the popularity of renting since 1918, when a dusting down of the history books reveals that as much as 77 per cent of property was let privately. With Leeds among the top five rental destinations in England, these new figures mark a seachange in the
way we now choose to live our lives – but, crucially, also highlight the need for a greater regulation of letting agents. This will help prevent less scrupulous agents from taking advantage of the unprecedented level of consumer demand – and leave many trusting clients out-of-pocket never to see their money again. Standards, quite rightly, will come under the public, press and political spotlight like never before. Renting should be a positive experience for both landlord and tenant alike. So, whether you are a landlord or a tenant, it’s more important than ever to go through an accredited agent. They are best placed to guide you through the complex rental process and accompanying legislation – as well as being able to offer complete peace of mind. Look out for agents who are members of ARLA for ultimate reassurance – they must adhere to a strict code of conduct as well as offering client money protection and redress schemes, which can protect you if things go wrong. Swipe a line of highlighter on the shadows, usually under the eye, along the nose and under the chin. Also apply a line above each brow, which will give the illusion of pulling your face up. Blend the lines in by dabbing with your middle finger.

When choosing holiday makeup, decide if you're going to play up your eyes or your mouth. If you emphasize both, you'll risk looking like a clown. If you opt for a dark, smokey eye, lighten up lips with a light, sheer lipstick.

Farsley’s Designer to the Stars In the last issue of Covered we featured milliner Beth Hirst’s display of hats, found adjacent to the fashion show at Wetherby Racecourse Ladies’ Evening. Beth mentioned at the time that she shares a Farsley studio with dressmaker James Steward. We had to go and take a look – and found far more than anticipated. Thirteen years ago James, originally from Hull, moved to Leeds to set up the popular boutique 'Aqua Couture' in the city centre. His credentials were impeccable. He had graduated with a degree in fashion design and trained at a top Italian couture house located in the heart of Rome. He quickly made a name for himself creating one-off pieces for the Leeds fashionistas . Word spread beyond Leeds at national and then international level. James’ celeb fan list rapidly grew to include fashion icons such as the Spice Girls and Kylie Minogue. Having decided that his passion lay in the bespoke side of his business, rather than off-the-peg retail, James parted ways with Aqua Couture to concentrate on his own made to measure couture. That was soon to include a successful range of bridal wear, quite unlike anything that can be bought from boutiques. James received acclaim not only from his clientèle. For two years running, James Steward Couture was voted "Yorkshire Brides Couture Designer of the Year" and "Leeds Independent Designer of the Year". Nowadays, the only seasonal ranges James releases are at winter time, the core of his business being weddings – not just for the bride, but also for the bridesmaids and mothers of the bride and groom. Which makes perfect sense – things matching where they should and not clashing where they shouldn’t.

For a quieter day out, Rodley Nature Reserve is a bit of a hidden gem. The Wetlands Reserve has been created on a floodplain in Kirkstall Valley. The reserve is home to wildfowl and waders on migration and younger children will enjoy pond dipping and exploring. Entry is free whilst there is an opportunity to book on to night time bat walks with an expert. The reserve can be found via a brown sign over a swing bridge leading over the canal from Rodley Town Street.

Post Natal Exercise One of the most frequently asked questions is “how do I get my tummy back?” The simplest rule is to not rush things and over strain. Doing 100’s of curl ups is not the answer to a flat tummy and will over strain your abdominal muscles. Here are a few simple exercises to wake up the abdominal muscles and strengthen the back muscles:
Pelvic tilts are a great way to get your tummy back!
Pelvic Tilts Laying on your back with knees bent, press the spine into the floor, tilt the pelvis towards your tummy button. Draw the tummy muscles towards the spine and hold for 6 seconds. Release and repeat
Static Contractions On your hands and knees in a ‘box’ shape. Ensure your spine is in its ‘natural or neutral’ position. Pull the tummy up towards the spine. Hold for up to 8 seconds Release and repeat
Head Lift Place a pillow under your head Draw the navel to the spine and lift up your head as you breath out Ensure the tummy does not push out. Lower and repeat

ILKLEY ANGLING ASSOCIATION Ilkley Angling Association was formed in 1887 and it is a small friendly open angling club controlling the fishing rights on the River Wharfe from Ilkley to Ben Rhydding and on two coarse fishing ponds situated between Ben Rhydding and Burley-in-Wharfedale. The scenic River Wharfe at Ilkley provides excellent fly fishing for wild Brown Trout and Grayling and bait fishing is also allowed. On 31st May this year a huge 26” (5lb+) Brown Trout was caught on the Ilkley stretch by a fly fisher and during the last winter Grayling up to just over 2lbs were caught. The two coarse fishing ponds contain Roach, Perch, Tench, Carp, Pike and Chub and the site is managed jointly with the Wharfedale Naturalists Society. Both the ponds and the river have a very interesting and varied set of flora & fauna. On the river most fishing days will see Dippers, Herons, Kingfishers, Goosanders and many ducks fly by and occasionally an Otter is spotted, even during daylight hours. The ponds are a particularly peaceful fishing location with some rare and interesting plant species present. Day permits costing £11 are available from the Ilkley Visitor Information Centre (opposite the station), the Ilkley Riverside Hotel and the Guiseley Angling Centre. The club has a resident qualified fly fishing instructor and the river at Ilkley is an ideal place to learn the art of fly fishing. Inexpensive season and day permits are available to fish the Ilkley Angling Association waters. PICK UP OR PAY UP Leeds City Council continue their new, firmer approach to dog fouling enforcement with frequent patrols by the council’s team of enforcement officers and officers from specialist environmental firm 3gs, who continue to target parts of West and North Leeds. The patrols act as a reminder to the public to clean up after their dogs and to put their litter in bins provided. Officers on patrol will issue a £75 penalty to anyone caught dropping rubbish or failing to pick up after their dog. Despite numerous dog waste bins and general litter bins – bagged dog waste can go in any council bin - dog fouling is still a city wide issue that people are increasingly fed up with and the council hopes that by encouraging more responsible behaviour, this will help to tackle the annual £8 million bill for street cleaning. If they do the right thing, putting litter in the bin and picking up their dog’s mess, then they do not need to worry as this will not affect them. “The public will hopefully be pleased that we are taking stronger actions against those that do litter or fail to clean up after their dogs and lead to the complaints regarding the city’s cleanliness. “With the co-operation of residents, visitors and businesses, we hope to see a great improvement throughout Leeds with high standards of cleanliness.”

REPAIRS ON BILLAMS HILL OTLEY – EXPECT DELAYS Works to repair a damaged culvert is due to be carried out on Billams Hill in Otley, from 22 July 2013. The work will be ongoing for five weeks to allow for essential repair works to the reinforced concrete slab which supports the road which carries the B6451 Billams Hill in Otley, immediately north of Otley Bridge. Temporary two-way traffic signals will be installed whilst the repairs take place. The traffic signals will be manually controlled at peak times to reduce the impact on the traffic flow as far as possible. Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for development and the economy said: “We have deliberately scheduled the work to the culvert on Billams Hill to take place during a period
when traffic is much lighter, and at a time we hope will cause the least disruption to traffic. “The work needs to be carried out to ensure the structure is safe and can deal with the level of traffic flow that uses it. “Unfortunately, some congestion during these works may be unavoidable and I would like to thank the public in anticipation of their patience whilst we undertake these works.”

Ben Rhydding Community Fête Ben Rhydding Community Fête is exactly that – a lovely event, run by the community for the community, giving a fun afternoon out for everyone and showcasing local organisations and activities. The 2013 edition in June – the eighth since inception in 2006 – was blessed with fine weather and attracted many hundreds of visitors. Some thirty stands included croquet and a taste of “Messy Church” – a hands-on creative activity for kids run every couple of months at St John’s, Ben Rhydding. The fête is not-for-profit, but with donations on the gate, a raffle and support from Audley Clevedon and Ilkley Parish Council, the organisers more than cover their costs. So they have money to give away to benefit projects in the Ben Rhydding area. Check out the website if you want to apply! Ditto for next year’s event. The ninth fête will definitely have a Tour de France theme and any suggestions for activities for teenagers will be more than welcome. For this event, Covered happened to be passing. Little ones welcome in Little Lane Little Lane Children’s centre in Ilkley is a purposebuilt facility serving families in Addingham, Ilkley and Ben Rhydding. Activities are generally aimed at parents and carers of under-fives, but children up to age 8 can be accepted if they have additional needs. There are two weekly drop-in stay-and-play sessions for families, while a third is specially for Ofsted -registered childminders and nannies. Three music-making sessions cater for the under-twos, 2-4 and 3-5-year-olds and there is a 5-week course for little learners, designed to promote learning and interaction for 12-24-month-olds. All these activities allow parents and carers to share the joys and trials of life with their little ones in a colourful, stimulating and super-friendly environment. There is a wellstocked toy and book library, too. Support sessions are a valuable resource at the centre. A monthly young parents’ group, a breastfeeding and baby care clinic, courses in baby massage, music therapy, yoga and sign language are all available, as is safety advice. The centre has a team of family support workers and operates a Common Assessment Framework to put families in touch with the agencies best likely to meet their needs. Citizen’s Advice, family law, education and employment are among the many areas where help and support are available.

60 Years of the Ilkley Flower Show Late spring or no late spring, there is still time to get planting and planning for the Ilkley Flower Show on 24 August (three weeks later than usual, fortunately!). Now celebrating its Diamond anniversary, the Show is about far more than just flowers, stunning though they always are. There are classes for vegetables, baking and preserves, craftwork and photography. As well as cash prizes, there are many tempting special prizes donated by generous local businesses and individuals. Tea for two at Rombald’s Hotel, lunch at Clevedon Restaurant, a hamper of goodies from Booths, vouchers from Grove Bookshop and Courtyard Planters, cosmetics from Boots – all these and plenty more are on offer this year. The Show takes place at Clarke Foley Centre and entries are accepted right up until 21 August.

Ilkley Summer Festival Ilkley can look forward to a wealth of entertainment in August. Kicking off on Yorkshire Day, 1 August, is the opening ceremony with the Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band, performing 11am-1pm at the bandstand on the Grove. The bandstand will be put to regular use throughout the month, notably on 3 August with Tumbling and Games for the under-9s, during the Continental Market 9-11 August and the Dolce Vita weekend 17th-18th, before the Last Night of the Proms brings the whole event to a rousing conclusion on Saturday, 31 August. Kings Hall will host Clare Teal and her Big Band on 23 August and a grand Variety Show on 28th. The Winter Gardens will see a carvery lunch and traditional tearoom on 25th, while Clarke-Foley will be the setting for a Tea Dance on 3rd. The Wheatley is putting on Beer and Yapas (Yorkshire Tapas, obviously...) on 15 August and a meal with accompaniment of jazz, soul, reggae and more on 23rd. On the fringe are heritage guided walks on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the month – a wonderful opportunity to find out more about the town we take for granted! And artists Joy Godfrey, Chris Bailey and Ken Jaquiery will be opening their studios at Back Nelson Road for the first three Sundays. Yorkshire Month in Otley August 2013 sees the introduction of a new and exciting month long series of events and activities in Otley. Yorkshire Day, 1 August, is in recognition of The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry’s participation in the Battle of Minden (Prussia) on that day in 1757. Otley Town Council has decided to make a full month of it. The inaugural event, the first Otley Food and Drink Festival runs on Sunday 28 July in the market place and Boroughgate and addition to the usual Farmers’ Market.

Throughout August, local groups and organisations will be providing a range of events and activities that will give residents and visitors a chance to see the wealth on offer in the Otley community. Displays, performances and events include Otley Brass Band, Otley Market Street Festival, Otley Clusters summer activity week at Prince Henry’s Grammar School and a Yorkshire Film Day. On Yorkshire Day itself there will be an official raising of the Yorkshire Flag a and a reading of the Yorkshire Declaration - full details of this and other events hadn’t been published at the time of going to press but should now be found on otleytowncouncil. gov.uk or at information points in Otley. Otley Prince Henry’s Summer Fête – a washout? No way!! Yes, the weather was appalling so some outside activities couldn’t set up and some of the stallholders booked for the indoor Craft Fair didn’t make it. But this is summer in Yorkshire and the Prince Henry’s Association event went ahead and turned a profit of well over £600. The main attractions outside were JBL Events’ assault course, the human gyroscope , GO-Kart Party and the bungee trampoline, none of whose customers minded getting wet.

Inside, the Craft fair had 41 stalls featuring everything from Thai Buddhist artefacts to rag dolls and cookies. There was entertainment from Prince Henry’s Brass and Jazz Bands (Without Strings – get it??), as well as Ashfield Primary School’s dancing display and a scary Jujitsu demonstration from Otley Health and Martial Arts Centre. The money raised will help fund a new outdoor covered seating area by Henry’s canteen – a development requested by students. Previous events have raised money for benches outside the front of the school and swelled the school’s hardship fund.

Thinking – and acting – outside the box Ilkley residents and others who mourned the passing of the Oasis Café now have reason to rejoice. All Saints’ Church needed to use its building, but the nearby Glover’s premises were available. So now we have Outside the Box, “more than just a café”, on the corner of Bridge Lane and Church Street. Set up by Ilkley Community Enterprise Ltd – a new local charity committed to community action and supporting adults and young people with learning disabilities – it provides training and support. Members acquire new skills, gain work experience in a real café environment, get qualifications, spend time with friends and connect with the wider community.

The project reflects the huge commitment of many people over the last 18 months. £100 000 has been raised from donations, fund-raising activities and support from local businesses, council and trust funds. Notable here is Hilton in the Community Foundation. Individuals have given goods, skills, time and expertise to create a café with a great profile. There are three trustees and a team – all volunteers – helping to run the café and an allotment providing food. Open now 10am-4pm at weekends and 11am-2pm Thursday and Friday, the café will be open 6 days a week from early August – with a new manager in place.

Seeing Stars at Burley Summer Festival This year's Burley-in-Wharfedale summer festival starts on 16 August with a Friday evening Ceilidh before the opening weekend. The week-long festival is set to pull in the crowds with a ten-day series of events designed to accommodate as many tastes and interests as they possibly could. The star attraction, by definition, may well be the cinema themed scarecrow trail and competition (Saturday 17). Start-up firms and local businesses still have plenty of time to support the festival and boost their own profile by sponsoring specific events and festival banners

University of the Third Age in the Wharfe Valley U3A – that’s for old people, isn’t it? Not necessarily; it is aimed at active people retired from full-time work or family responsibilities and who want to develop new interests, or pursue current activities, with like-minded folk. There is no lower age limit and many members work part-time. Local groups work to a loosely-defined national concept to establish their own sections. You don’t need any qualifications and you certainly don’t have to take any exams! And, if you have an interest you want to share, U3A could be for you.

Ilkley and District U3A has upwards of a thousand members and offers over 80 activities from Architecture to Wayfarers’ Walking. In between come temptations to Hike to Lunch (other groups walk or even stroll there...) or to Cook to Inspire. There is physical activity: table tennis, circle dancing, Tai Chi and motorcycling. Languages ancient and modern are covered, along with film, art, music and literature, family history, Scrabble and Mahjong. Science and technology, computing, digital photography, health and well-being... the list goes on. At the enrolment morning at Ilkley’s Clarke-Foley Centre on 15 June, 50 stands in three rooms were buzzing with activity as members old and new rushed to enrol for 2013-4. Lions Win Two Prizes for the Otley Carnival Otley Lions roared to success in the prize-giving at Otley Carnival in June, achieving two prizes. The Lions’ bookshop in Mercury Row won first prize for the medium-sized window display. The display involved an intriguing representation of the world-wide-web and a charming celebration of children’s literature. On the day of the Carnival, the Lions' float won first prize in the Class 2 category. The float provided a representation of books and literature, with Lions,
friends and even grand-children dressed up as literary characters. Well done to all involved!

Car Boot Sales – a Greener Way to Fight Austerity Summer is eventually upon us. With it comes a wealth of seasonal car boot sales. Well run car boots provide sellers an opportunity to clear space and raise more than a few pounds in the process. Greener than consigning the stuff to landfill and more immediate than a card on a supermarket community notice board. For most buyers there is money to be saved. Why commit hundreds of pounds to household goods, toys or baby stuff when some of the items on your shopping list might turn up at a fraction of the new prices? It’s worth taking a look. And some buyers can make a profit by selling on – often online or at another boot or market. Holiday in Normandy, A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE anyone? Covered brings you exclusive news of a new initiative – or two Members of the Ilkley-Coutances Twinning Committee took advantage of a recent visit to Coutances to forge new links and resurrect old ones. Jenny Howarth of Ilkley Business Forum and Marion Smith of Ilkley Tennis Club met their opposite numbers and established promising sporting and trading contacts. But making the news in the French press the day after its announcement at the official reception in Coutances Town Hall was the proposal to create a house exchange scheme between the two towns and their areas. Response from the French was enthusiastic and rapidly extended to offers of accommodation, as paying guests or just as …guests! The project is in its infancy and will initially involve the creation of a database of people interested, who will then be invited to contact each other to arrange personal exchanges or visits. Vice-chairman of the Twinning Committee, Loraine Powell, told Covered “In these times of financial constraint, such projects are increasingly popular and are yet another way of fostering the entente cordiale”. Another piece of recent good news is that funding has been secured for three primary school teachers to come from the Caen authority (which includes Coutances) to spend a week in Wharfe valley primary schools. Blooming Great Tea Party Raises Over £1k Aireborough Fundraising Group held a Blooming Great Tea Party this week to help raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The group held their tea party at Guisley Methodist Church and raised over £1000, the money raised from the tea party will allow Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes in West Yorkshire. Delicous cakes were sold along with a refreshing cups of tea and the group organised stalls selling Marie Curie Cancer Care products as well as plants and books all donated from the local area. Hazel Goodison the groups Chair said “We are delighted with the succcess of this years Blooming Great Tea Party, everyone worked extermley hard to make the Tea Party a great success. Don’t worry! If you choose the right place for your pet then you should be able to enjoy your holiday and your pet will also enjoy theirs. Animals will pick up on your stress so if you show that you’re not worried, they’re less likely to be too. Animal matters Everyone knows that you shouldn’t leave animals unattended in a car on a hot day. But what should you do as the days get warmer?
Combat Fleas, Ticks, Mites and Flystrike
Time outdoors in hot weather increases the likelihood of getting these. To combat give animals a suitable product regularly to reduce their risk, keep their sleeping and eating areas clean and check daily for any signs of infection.
Increase Water and Shade and Do Not Over Exercise
If possible on hot days keep animals indoors or make sure they have plenty of shade and water if they have to stay outside. Keep f ish tanks and bird/small animal cages out of direct sunlight. Remember conser vatories can also heat up quickly.
This month’s Pick of the Paws is Jasper - Siamese X British Blue. Owner Jess tells us: he’s 4 years old and his favourite hobbies including eating, sleeping, snacking, napping and relaxing in the sun. He’s very friendly and is always hanging around with us - he loves being snuggled!

Jasper
When walking your dog take a portable water bowl and don’t over exercise. Dogs will collapse before giving up, at which point it may be too late. Signs of overheating include increased panting/ breathing, listlessness and drooling.
Stop Skin Problems including Sunburn
Pets with fine/light coloured hair may need petsafe sunblock, particularly to noses and ears to stop them burning. Be careful of hot surfaces like pavements and sand as pets can burn their paws. Hair can be trimmed but no shorter than one inch to keep sun protection and groom frequently.
Don’t Forget…
If you see an animal in distress contact the RSPCA immediately and give the animal relief by providing water and shelter. For more information on any of the above contact your vet or local friendly pet shop.

Festival weekend doublebill boosts local talent Ilkley Summer Festival 2013 has decided to cash in on a wealth of local talent, by arranging to use Yorkshire acts in a couple of back-to-back shows. The Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August weekend will include Ilkley’s Dolce Vita and Abba Revival both staged outdoors on The Grove which will be closed to vehicles that weekend. The Dolce Vita night stars Dominic Halpin and the Honey Bs (old favourites at the Festival) and features local band Five Dollar Shoes. Asked about Five Dollar Shoes, Festival Managing Director, Anne Hawkesworth told us “Many Festival fans in Ilkley are aware how much work Brian Bailey put into the Festival over the years. Brian died in January and is much missed by all. I’m absolutely delighted that his band Five Dollar Shoes are continuing and even more delighted that they will be performing at the Dolce Vita night – a similar line up as before, but without Brian.” Completing the local line-up is trapeze duo Arabesque led by local girl Sophie Page-Hall, who moon to be booked for the newcomers section in the will perform their Birds of Paradise routine. upcoming Bingley Music Live.” Sunday sees Abba Revival on stage on The Grove for a family afternoon. Leeds Author’s New Series Enhanced, the first entry in the new series “The Aescar Chronicles” follows the story of Alexander Howell, a young man who joins the army to provide for his family and create a better life for his beloved Jessica. The exciting adventure thriller unfolds in the fictional nation of Aescar, where a war with neighbouring Darien that has lasted a generation and a huge spike in population growth threatens already overstretched food supplies. The State, Aescar’s seemingly benevolent totalitarian rulers, have taken charge of food distribution, utilities, manufacturing and many other aspects of everyday life for the sake of the war effort. Aescar’s burgeoning population is divided into two distinct social tiers, the Citizens, who enjoy most of the freedoms of any normal society and the happily oppressed Churls, who must apply for government permission to marry, breed and own property. As the son of Churl parents, one of the few ways for Alexander to become a Citizen is to serve in the armed forces. But joining the Aescaran army comes with a price, or as The State would tell it, a gift. The higher brain functions of every soldier are chemically suppressed and replaced by a synaptic transceiver which connects them to a single, central mind operated by the mysterious and enigmatic Controllers. In this way, a soldier will never experience pain or fear and crucially, will never refuse an order. However, when Alexander is accidentally set free of his Enhancement, he is unwillingly recruited into the AFA, a fledgling rebellion against The State. He is forced to accompany Blue Six, the rebel militia’s ragtag elite, who fear and despise him in equal measure as they encounter starving bandits, abandoned cities, the unflinching Enhanced soldiers of The State and a secret that will break apart their entire understanding of the world around them. Enhanced is the creation of Chris Tasker, an author born and bred in Bramley, Leeds. Chris has been fascinated by storytelling for all of his twenty eight years and spent much of his childhood scribbling down stories and ideas as they came into his head. A product of Intake High School and later Leeds Met University, Chris’ main passion at school was history, particularly Russia in the 1920s. His biggest influences as an author are Bernard Cornwell and
