Crime Rates in Horsforth Crime rates are a valid concern for residents and people thinking of relocang to Horsforth. A popular locaon for people who like city living, but also want to enjoy more rural surroundings, Horsforth has a proud reputaon of being a low level crime area, and the cost of living here reflects that. It is now possible to view the crime rates online through the Police’s website. The figures for Horsforth are relavely low, consisng of 44 incidents of crime and an-social behaviour (ASB) in February. However on closer inspecon, the crime figures for Horsforth on the police website do not include the larger residenal areas around Broadway, New Road Side and Low Lane. Taking these areas into account, and neighbouring Tinshill, the figure is considerably higher.

Approximately 164 incidents of crime and ASB occurred in February, with the most frequent occurrences being ASB, closely followed by other crime, which includes shopliing, criminal damage and drug offences. Burglary makes up a significant proporon of the figures. Looking at the neighbourhood stascs, (the neighbourhood consisng of Horsforth, Rawdon, Guiseley, Yeadon, Bramhope, Carlton, Arthington, up to Pool and Otley) the crime rate is 6 per 1000 people, which, according to the site, is average. ASB is more prevalent in the wider Horsforth area than other crimes, which is a worrying trend.

“This is a crime which causes environmental damage, obstrucon to people passing by and encourages an-social behavior”
Waste Site Closure Update In last months Covered we asked if you were concerned about fly pping following the closure of the Calverley Bridge waste site. It seems that problems has already begun and residents are being urged to report flyppers who have dumped rubbish including fencing, builders’ rubble and even an old bath in Woodhall Lane, Calverley. Leeds City Council is appealing to residents in the area to help them idenfy the rubbish. They hope this will lead them to the people behind the illicit offloading of waste, which should be disposed of at official sites. Councillor Tom Murray, execuve member for environmental services, Leeds City
Council, said: “We want to find out who is responsible for this irresponsible dumping and bring them to jusce. This is a crime which causes environmental damage, obstrucon to people passing by and encourages an-social behavior”. The council is appealing for local support to help eradicate this ongoing blight. Someone may recognise the dumped items or may even have spoed this happening and they are urged to contact the council with any details that would help trace those responsible.
Anyone who can help with idenfying the dumped waste or the people or vehicles involved should call enforcement officers on 0113 395 1765.

Following last months Horsforth Maers there has been some posive developments with graffi being removed from several public buildings and road-signs. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the state of our roads and footpaths, which connue to cause problems for residents. Broadgate Drive holds on to top posion in our list of neglected roads with no fewer than 29 reportable and dangerous potholes along its length. There has been no work on the top of Batchelor Lane or Hall Lane and for the third month running the collapsed surface at the top of Town Street is sll causing havoc to motorists and cyclists alike! I hear from a disappointed householder, who first reported the potholes back in the spring of 2010, that the road to the top of Batchelor Lane is now in such a poor state of repair local residents are now having to divert down Broadgate Lane to get home or risk

ruining their suspension. Cllr Chris Townsley recently told this magazine “potholes, when reported, are generally fixed in 48 hours”. That seems not to be the case here. I have received several leers regarding “An Social Behavior” and the recent spate of vandalism that is blighng certain areas. Specifically within Hall Park, the public phone box/area around the shops on Broadgate lane and around Troy Hill. I will be forwarding details directly to our neighbourhood policing team and will keep you aware of developments. Local elecons have now taken place and I am pleased that the old guard has finally changed and that Horsforth has finally got a new Councilor to represent its interests in Leeds. I am hopeful that now Horsforth will start to receive its fair share and I look forward to reporng progress over the coming months.

I am also delighted to report that as we go to press the new benches that we have been campaigning for since 2009 have started to be installed around the town, well done to Horsforth Town Council for this addional funding. Next month Horsforth Maers will focus on illegal and inconsiderate parking that causes misery to so many residents and we ask why we do not have more effecve enforcement. Prevent burglary – check your locks Police in North West Leeds have issued an appeal for householders to get their uPVC door locks checked and, if needed, replaced with secure Euro Cylinder locks. This follows an increase in break-ins where cheap locks have been forced by burglars using a simple tool to smash the lock - a technique well known among criminals. One in four burglaries in West Yorkshire involve Euro Profile locks, which are widely used in older uPVC doors. Inspector Richard Coldwell, from the North West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “At the moment burglary is sll the biggest crime problem that we have got in this area. Burglaries are not high, but they are higher than they should be. It is lile measures like this that can help avoid being a crime vicm.” Neil Goldup, Chief Execuve of CASAC (Community Acon and Support Against Crime), said: “It’s incredibly easy for criminals to gain entry once they realise what type of lock is in the door. CASAC offers a free service to Covered readers to check properes and we have new fully-tested Euro cylinder locks.” CASAC is an established West Yorkshire social enterprise that works with local people, the Police and other agencies to improve community safety, reduce crime and the fear of crime. Contact the CASAC team on 0845 519 2122 to book your free no obligaon home security assessment or visit www.casac. org.uk to book online.

Dear Covered,
STAR LETTER £25 Give us a call to claim Dear Covered, I read in your last issue that our Horsforth Mafia ( Aka: Our 3 City councillors ) are geng annoyed with Bob Horsforth because of his campaign against the potholes in Horsforth. All we ever hear from these 3 “elected” ( by less than one tenth of the populaon ! ) representaves is that they can’t get anything done because the “Labour led” City council have made cuts. They conveniently omit to menon that it is “their” ConDem Government who have forced the massive cutbacks having to be made by the Local Council. The only thing that annoys me about Bob Horsforth is his silly surname, Regards... Bob Upandown. ( ! ) Mr B Peters, 64 St. James Terrace, Horsforth.
I live just above the flats where the Hospital used to be on Outwood lane. Since Dickies scrap yard was replaced with housing and the hospital with flats, parking on Outwood Lane between the Church and the narrow lane (beside Outwood House) has become a real problem for residents. Most of the parked cars belong to workers from the offices at the boom of the road. There is a short distance, which was not given double yellow line status, and even though we have succeeded in geng white lines in front of our drives, it is extremely difficult to see if cars are coming along the road when emerging from the drive. The problem is exacerbated when drivers abuse the white lines and park opposite each other, only one car can navigate the road at one me and frequent stopping, pulling in and reversing occurs. Ideally we would like resident only parking Mon to Fri between 8am and 5pm. If you can put pressure on the council to do something I would be very grateful. Regards, Brian Denison

Dear Covered, We have been enjoying beauful weather recently and like many other residents of Horsforth, I was straight to the park to soak up some sun. Pork pie picnic on hand, I had a lovely aernoon sat watching people frolicking in the sun. My pleasure was however cut short when I went to use the public conveniences. Convenient would be the last word I would use to describe the experience. My sunny April dream quickly morphed into a nightmare. The toilets were more akin to a horror film set, with suspicious substances on the walls, ceiling and floor, no light to see what I was doing, and toilet paper a ridiculous wishful thought. No hand towels, or even a receptacle to offer hand towels was available. I was really quite shocked, and I have travelled to North Africa and used some very basic toilets in my me. I then remembered your arcle about the Bandstand Revamp and felt incensed that £2000 could be spent on a lick of paint, when the toilets are in such a nauseang condion. Did no-one think the money could be stretched to buy a light bulb, a few rolls of toilet paper and a bole of bleach? Kate, Horsforth
Geraldine in absence of staff most of this long weekend has been splendid. Maybe I shouldn’t have asked her to re-le the roof.

Pete’s Cross Channel Feat
Local People
Horsforth fundraiser Pete Windridge-France is taking on a cross channel swimming challenge in aid of Penny Field School. Pete’s son aends the school, which is a Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre in Meanwood. His swim will be carried out w/c 18th September with the actual day he sets off determined by weather condions and des. As if the challenge wasn’t difficult enough, the swim is in accordance with Channel Swimmers and Pilots Federaons rules so Pete will don just his trunks, goggles and a non-insulated cap – no wetsuit allowed! 37 year old Pete hopes to cross the channel within 18 hours and raise £8,000. Pete has already personally paid for his navigaon crew and boat so every pound raised will go directly to The Friends of Penny Field. The money will help replace old equipment, spruce up dilapidated areas, and provide fun days out for the kids to smulang places such as urban farms that wouldn’t usually be easily accessible from them It’s a great local cause, so please help if you can. Female professors to the fore at Leeds Trinity University College Leeds Trinity University College has bucked the naonal trend with the appointment of four new female professors as it recognises the achievements of academic staff. This means that four out of the five professors on the teaching staff at Leeds Trinity are women, which contrasts sharply with the naonal picture. Times Higher Educaon reported in January that 19.1% of professors naonally are female compared with 44% of all academic staff. Professor Maureen Meikle, Head of Humanies and Professor of Early Modern History, said, “For four out of the five professors to be women is a major achievement. The appointment of seven professors and readers in the Humanies department acknowledges the level of scholarship in our department and the internaonal reputaon of our researchers.” With scholarly work subject to peer review by expert colleagues around the world, the conferment of the tles is acknowledgement
of achievements by the wider academic community as well as by Leeds Trinity itself. Professor Freda Bridge, Leeds Trinity’s Principal and Chief Execuve, said, “The appointment of five professors and three readers is a significant development for Leeds Trinity University College. It shows that Leeds Trinity is a wellrespected higher educaon instuon and acknowledges the importance of research and scholarship for staff. For students it is a clear sign that they are taught by academics who are leaders in their own parcular subject area.” The new Professors and Readers at Leeds Trinity University College:

TASC Badminton Club – Celebrang 30 years! TASC Badminton Club, who are based at Leeds Trinity University College (formerly Trinity All Saint’s College) are celebrang their 30th Anniversary this year and are appealing for members past and present to join them in an evening of celebraon. Sylvia Sellers and a handful of friends from a baby-sing circle who all liked to play a weekly game of badminton formed the club in June 1981. The club inially hired one court but membership grew quickly and the club now hires three courts at Trinity. One of the first private badminton clubs in the area, TASC has 20 members including students from Trinity. Sylvia told us “We pride ourselves in being a friendly, sociable yet compeve club. A few of our present members have been with the club 15 years or more!” The club meets on Fridays from 7:30pm – 9:30pm, 50 weeks of the year.
Founder member Sylvia has organised an evening with a “finger buffet and glass of something to whet the appete” to celebrate 30 years of TASC Badminton club. “Over 30 years I have had the pleasure of meeng so many interesng and nice people” she told us “I would like to thank all past and present members for their support and in parcular, Graham Henson, Bob Athey, Sally Ellam and Ken Wilson for their dedicaon and support. Not forgeng members of the baby-sing circle! Judy, Armani, Janet, Margaret and Norma who 30 years ago helped establish the club! We hope to see members past and present for what should be a truly memorable and nostalgic evening. The TASC Badminton Club 30 year celebraon takes place on Friday 10th June at 7pm at Leeds Trinity University College. If you would like to aend, or require further informaon about the club please contact Sylvia Sellers on: 0113 2590113 or Graham Henson on 0113 2584532. Yarnbury News An enthusiasc, large crowd gathered and raised £1700 for the St James unit of the Teenage Cancer Trust when recent past colts played Yarnbury RFC’s current colts squad. The charity game was in memory of popular ex-Yarnbury Colt Oli Simcoe-Shelton who died earlier this year. Six tries were scored, three to each side, in a full-blooded game which raised much needed funds and awareness for the unit. The club would like to extend thanks to everyone who helped make the day a huge success. Those wishing to further support the cause should contact the club directly.
Yarnbury’s own first team prop Richard Lister is running The Leeds Half Marathon on 8th May for the Teenage Cancer Trust. To support him please visit www.justgiving.com/ richlisterforoli and for more informaon on the Teenage Cancer Trust visit www. teenagecancertrust.org Also at Yarnbury, a match was organised by Yarnbury Under 13’s coach Paul Marshall between Farnley Junior ARLFC and Yarnbury. The game was put on to give both sides a chance of experiencing the two different rugby codes, playing half a game of Rugby League and Rugby Union. It also gave Farnley Junior
ARLFC who are coached by ex Yarnbury player Simon Briers experience of the Horsforth facilies and something about the history of the club.

Horsforth Cricket Club On the build up to the new season,
Local Sport
Horsforth Cricket Club played two preseason friendlies against a backdrop of glorious sunshine and a large number of spectators. Although both games, against top Bradford League side Farsley and Division A team Follifoot, ended in defeat against much stronger opposion, Horsforth players were able to get some good match pracce. It seems the pracce paid off as Horsforth Cricket Club enjoyed a perfect start to the new season, with both1st & 2nd teams registering decisive victories on the opening Saturday.
The 1st XI cruised to victory over Alwoodley, bowling the opposion out for just 119 with Andrew Robinson taking 4-32. Openers Richard Graves & Kris Lewis then put on a century stand to set Horsforth on their way to a 7 wicket victory. Meanwhile, back at Horsforth, the 2nd XI were struggling at 1039 unl a league record-equaling 10th wicket partnership of 84 between juniors Paul Hands (68 not out)and Nick Taylor(5) saw HCC through to a respectable 187. Opening bowler Pete Wincup then led the way with 5-21 as Pool were bowled out for just 68. The second game of the season bought mixed fortunes for the club. The 1st X1 clinched an excellent victory, seeing off Ilkley by 48 runs.
Horsforth, baed first and reached 72-3 thanks to a partnership of 53 between Kris Lewis & Ollie Musgrave. Andrew Robinson then came to the wicket and set about the Ilkley aack, racing to a rapid 77, while Lewis also completed an excellent knock of 61. Faced with Horsforth’s final total of 203, Ilkley slumped to 54-6 before their overseas player Bezzent saw their score pass the 100 mark. Robinson & Bates finally mopped up the tail to bowl out the visitors for 155, Robinson taking 6-57. Horsforth’s 2nd Team, meanwhile, suffered a less successful day, being bowled out for just 109 at Follifoot. The home side made short work of overhauling the HCC total, losing 2 wickets in the process. The club has finally received confirmaon that our overseas player, Adam Mabb, will be joining for the new season. Adam, a fast bowler from Queensland, has
been waing for his visa to be cleared by the authorities back home but has now arrived in England and is raring to go start taking wickets! Keep up with HCC! For the first me, followers of Horsforth CC are able to keep up to date with live scores from games through Twier (Twier. com/HorsforthCC). The club has also launched an official club page on Facebook and the new website (w w w.pitchero.com/clubs/ horsforthcricketclub) is now receiving in excess of 3000 hits a week!
Thanks to Chris Taylor.

Purpose built Retirement L O
ver the past few years a new type of housing development has begun to spring up in our towns and cities. Purpose built private retirement developments providing housing exclusively for the over 60s are now in demand. The market leader, McCarthy & Stone, is coming to the Yeadon area, filling a gap in the market, developing run down brownfield land and freeing up property for mainstream buyers.
McCarthy & Stone has received planning permission for 30 Retirement Living apartments on Rufford Avenue in Yeadon. Building work is now underway with the sales release anticipated in May this year.
Covered Property
Steve Secker, Regional Managing Director for McCarthy & Stone, said: “The demand for new homes continues to increase while housing production reaches an 80 year low. We now face an urgent housing challenge across the UK, but measures to simply increase housing supply don’t go far enough. At McCarthy and Stone we think more focus should be put on creating the right type of housing for our rapidly ageing population. “We are living longer than ever before. Over the last century life expectancy has increased by 30 years and, since 2007, there have been more people over the state pension age in Britain than children. We are healthier too, meaning more of us will enjoy an active and independent retirement lasting many years”. McCarthy & Stone Retirement Living offers independence combined with the peace of mind additional security, low maintenance and companionship can bring. All properties come
with 24 hour emergency call points, electrical sockets at a raised height to reduce bending, illuminated light switches, video entry system, easy grip lever taps in the bathroom and kitchen and energy efficient heating. Residents can also enjoy maintained gardens, socialise in the communal lounge and invite family or friends to stay in the development’s hotel-style guest suite. McCarthy & Stone retirement developments can also benefit the community. Our sites are often located in town and city centres which means they make better use of existing urban sites. Having centrally located retirement developments can contribute to the sustainability of local communities on a number of levels. Residents are able to stay close to family and friends or return to areas they have long known or aspire to; bringing inward investment. Residents often shop locally and use public transport and local amenities, so help benefit the local economy. Mr Secker continues: “There comes a time when we all have to make a decision. Staying in the family home and adapting it to meet changing needs is not always the best option for everybody. And moving into a care home before that level of support is required can be very upsetting for everyone involved. Retirement developments can bridge the gap between the two giving peace of mind to the resident and their family.” The fact that we are living longer means that demand for new homes is increasing at an

ever faster rate. However, an increase in purpose-built retirement developments would not only better service the needs of the over 60s, but could actually help address the broader issue of housing supply. Mr Secker sums up: “At McCarthy & Stone we believe retirement developments provide the

ideal solution to many people. But to make them more commonplace measures such as ensuring land is released for development, making sure the planning system delivers housing choice for older people and easing regulation, which will all help to increase the availability of specialist retirement accommodation”.

Business Profile
70’s
60’s AND NOW Town Garage is a family business, owned and run by brothers Phil and Tony Leeks. Tony, who runs the service and parts department side of the business, was previously the Service Manager for a group of Honda dealerships and spent 20 years in the role. Prior to that Tony worked for his father Nigel who started the business many years ago when it was situated on Horsforth Town Street opposite Barclays bank. Phil, the company’s Financial Director, also started working for his father and inially trained as a motor technician. Phil diversified 10 years ago and now owns a successful IT supply and support company. Now he is thrilled to be back at the helm of their family business following a long gap. The brothers have invested in an extensive
refurbishment of the workshop, showroom and offices. The team at Town Garage is capable of servicing any make of car, thanks to further investment in state of the art diagnosc equipment and experienced technicians. Owing to the block exempon rule of 2003 any car covered by a manufacturer’s warranty can be serviced and repaired without invalidang the warranty. So, no longer a need to take your pride and joy along to the main dealer – Town Garage offer everything you need.
