Another success! I am delighted to be able to report yet another huge success for Covered Magazine and the "Forgotten Horsforth group". We have campaigned for 17 months for parking bays along the length of Troy Road to stop drivers having to park on the footpath every day. At last Leeds City Council has succumbed to our demands and marked out bays, this solves the problem of inconsiderate parking and improves pedestrian safety! Travel Chaos at Horsforth Station The morning of 10 October was the second successive Monday when delays caused by weekend maintenance work on the Harrogate to Leeds line ran over. Commuters arriving as early as 6.30 were left wondering why their train hadn’t come. Later, they didn’t know which way to turn. The chaos was at its worst at around 8.00. Commuters were leaving the platform not sure which of several coach and bus pick up points would serve them best. They found themselves walking into waves of passengers getting off the coaches. Drivers had announced that train services were being resumed.
(Photo: Ivor Hughes)
Some commuters took taxis, others continued their journeys by the cars they had just parked. Some stood on the bridge not knowing which way to turn. Those who waited found services resumed at around 8.30.
Harrogate and Leeds Stations, and all in between, must have had several hours’ warning. Maybe the causes were nobody’s fault, but the ensuing chaos certainly was.

Covered Magazine PARKING – OUTWOOD LANE, LOW LANE, Q: TROY ROAD – just 3 of the areas residents are concerned about. The majority of problems are caused by visitors working in Horsforth or using the train station. Could the amount of available parking be increased in these areas through multi-story on the train station site? In the case of Outwood Lane, could BUPA could be pushed to provide alterative parking/transport for employees?
Council parking in Horsforth is free of charge A: and the council is not in a position to fund a multi-storey.
Parking at the station is the responsibility of Metro. Over the last decade the council has introduced three areas of restricted parking in the area around the station. There are a number of businesses based in the areas off Low Lane – not just BUPA. If vehicles are causing an obstruction we would advise people to contact parking services or the police. CORRECTION! HMS Aubretia Rededicated in Horsforth Ivor Hughes attended the rededication ceremony on 16 October.
During WWII it was customary to invite towns to “adopt” ships or aircraft. First by subscription and then by continued contact between the town and the crew. In 1941, the good folk of Horsforth were invited to raise enough to adopt the corvette HMS Aubrietia. They were to exceed the suggested sum by a long way – enough to make their £241,000 represent the highest amount ever raised in UK per capita. Evidently Horsforth was a highly patriotic and prosperous town back then. HMS Aubrietia distinguished herself by playing a key role in the capture of U-Boat 110. Capture of the submarine was one thing. But the capture of an intact Enigma code machine, complete with code book, was entirely another – the German Navy was using a more sophisticated version than their army counterparts. But WWII was no time for sentiment – HMS Aubretia didn’t see out the end of the war and was sold off in 1948.
The outdoor rededication (church) service lasted 40 minutes. Canon Rosemarie Hayes led the service – and the singing (hers was later the only full voice to be heard singing the second verse of the National Anthem). Anecdotes and reminiscences were led by Commodore Paul Sutermeister RN.

Local War Veterans Visit School
The Froebelian School in Horsforth recently hosted two very special visitors, Mr Alex Hodgins and Mr John Mead, both World War II Veterans. The gentlemen visited the school to speak about HMS Aubrietia, the warship adopted by Horsforth in WWII. Mr Hodgins who served in the Fleet Air Arm, explained how HMS Aubrietia had played a vital role in the capture of a German ‘enigma’ code machine. The children listened, enraptured to the story of HMS Aubrietia and then asked all manner of questions! ‘It was a pleasure to share our experience with such interested and enthusiastic children” said Mr Mead, who was a Hurricane pilot in WWII.
Froebelian children with Mr Mead & Mr Hodgins
Mr Tranmer, Headmaster said ‘We were honoured to have such esteemed visitors to the school and hopefully some of the children will attend the rededication with their families’.

Safe Haven in Horsforth The furniture charity store Safe Haven at Willow Green, Parkside assists people setting up home after becoming homeless through domestic violence, repossession, imprisonment or other personal tragedy. Project Manager Tony Anderson and Leigh Murphy had the idea to set up this charity with other members in 2010. All members have been moved by their faith, Tony and Leigh gave up their full time jobs and opened Safe Haven with the help of the team a year ago. At present Safe Haven operates out of Willow Green Pentecostal Church who own the building. Working hand in hand with Leeds City Council’s furniture re-use group and other statutory and voluntary agencies, Safe Haven receives unwanted furniture and other household items then redistributes them to people in need. Some of the donations are sold in the shop to raise funds. They furnish and equip around two homes a week, predominantly in west and northwest Leeds. This furniture is donated free of charge. Safe Haven is always on the lookout for more donations, voluntary help and corporate sponsorship – help with a website, refurbishing the building and buying a larger van are among current priorities.

Trinity’s All Saints’ Day 2012
Local Matters
All Saints’ Day, 1 November, is special to Leeds Trinity University College – they were once known as Trinity All Saints. But things didn’t go entirely to plan this year. Regrettably, illness prevented the Bishop of Leeds, from conducting the special morning mass. The fun and fundraising afternoon, sadly, didn’t attract the number of anticipated participants. The fancy dress tug-of-war tournament attracted only fifteen volunteers, and none of those in fancy dress. Not enough for two full teams.
Trinity’s fancy dress tug-of-war competition was contested by three teams of five, though none in fancy dress. Students’ Union President Stephen Knowles (centre) was getting to grips more comfortably than his team mates. (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
The other activity was a Rambling Challenge – where teams of five had to locate and undertake six Krypton Factor or I’m a Celebrity types of syndicate exercise (without the disgusting food or bugs). One exercise, The Spider’s Web, required a team member to be threaded through three different holes – without touching the rope (see picture). Seven teams entered that test, including some diehards from the earlier tug-of-war. The afternoon’s activities raised in excess of £500 for St Gemma’s Hospice.

HCT Christmas Events Leeds Guild of Singers The cuts may mean fewer festivities this year but Horsforth Churches Together are determined to try and brighten everything up. They will be inviting the whole community to gather by the Bandstand in Hall Park on the afternoon of Saturday, 10th December from 4.00 to 4.30 pm to sing carols together. Horsforth Music Centre will provide a brass band and there will be a nativity fancy dress competition (fancy dress worn over warm winter clothing!) Hot drinks and mince pies will be provided to keep the cold out. Still in the nativity play mood the churches are providing a Christmas show for all the family on the last Monday before Christmas, 19th December. They have booked the well-respected Christian Theatre Company, Riding Lights, to perform both a matinee, 2 pm and evening 7 pm performance of their play ‘Give it Back Mak!’ It is designed for all the family and offers Christmas Good News in a fun accessible and fresh way.
‘The Spirit of Christmas’ will be brought once again to St Mary’s Church, Broadgate Lane, Horsforth by the Leeds Guild of Singers under their director Graham Coatman. At 3.00 pm on Sunday December 11th, they will present a concert of carols and readings followed by wine and mince pies. Always a highlight of the year in St Mary’s, the concert will cost no more than it did last year with tickets costing £5 which can be bought in advance or at the door. The money will be shared between Candlelighters and Cafod.
Without wishing to give the plot away we can reveal that Mak has an interest in the inn keeping business and there is a possibility of supernatural beings putting in an appearance. To find out more ring 0113 258 2448.

A white Vauxhall Nova (centre) had been in collision with a black Peugeot 206 (left).
Although the impact was not recorded as being at high speed, the Vauxhall lost a wheel and the Peugeot a good part of a front wing. Injuries were reported as minor. Give Covered a call to claim Dear Covered, After reading the article on the potholes on Scotland Way I feel grieved that nothing has been done with the appalling state of Layton Lane, Rawdon. The road is dangerous especially on two wheels. We don’t know why this has been neglected for over twenty five years. Are there any plans to rectify this road before someone has an accident? Paul Midgley Dear Sir, Thank you, to your reader who acknowledged your article and then my effort in writing to the Highway's Dept. in order to get the resurfacing of Broadgate Drive completed. I did write to residents of this street saying that first some remedial work followed by a complete refurbishment would be done this year (ED: See letter on this page). This road was in fact on the Leeds City Council's Capital Programme of works for this current year. If readers have anything else that needs to be brought to my attention please do so by either contacting myself direct or as in this case, write to the Covered Magazine Editor, who will then forward it to me for action. My details are: e-mail christopher.townsley@leeds.gov. uk or tel 0113 2590555 Cllr. Chris Townsley Liberal Democrat Horsforth Ward CoveredMagazine
Covered Magazine and Bob Horsforth have long campaigned for improvements to Broadgate Drive, with Bob declaring that it is the “Road in the worst state of repair” for many months. Action is finally being taken and Cllr Townsley wrote to all residents to inform them of a schedule of repair. Good news I hear you say! Not for all residents it seems. Cllr Townley’s good news prompted this response from one resident concerned that the repairs will mean faster traffic. Dear Mr Townsley, Having received your letter to all residents on Broadgate Drive re: the state of disrepair of the road, and, being a resident on Broadgate Drive, may I point out that not all of us want these holes filling in!! You obviously didn’t stay on the road long enough to observe the speed that many lunatics drive up and down it, especially between 4pm and 6pm, and that’s WITH the holes slowing them down!! God help us if they are filled in--the holes that are--allowing the dafties a smooth race-course to drive up and down! There are many young children living down here, or staying at grandparents-like ours-and many older ones, like us, who are not quick on our feet, and it’s quite terrifying the speed these maniacs can achieve as they turn the corner at the top and come down the Drive. Please reconsider filling the holes in, or putting speed bumps across at the same time. Name and Address withheld It seems that despite his best efforts, Cllr Townsley will struggle to keep all residents happy. Speed bumps would no doubt go some way to solving the problem for this resident but what are your thoughts on speeding motorists? How would you slow down “dafties” without making the roads an obstacle course for other drivers? Do you have a problem on your road with speeding cars? Let us know – chris@covered-magazine.net Covered offers the right of reply to any organisation or individual mentioned in our Local Matters and readers letters pages. Please email: office@covered-magazine.net

Last week I was in the Himalayas, taking a group of nine women to Everest Base Camp. Their ages ranged from 28 – 53, none of them had ever done anything like this before, and they didn’t know if they could. And not only were they walking up to 18,500 feet, where there is only 50% of the oxygen we breathe down here, these amazing women were each raising £10,000 for charity. That is enough of a challenge for most people without the walking! The impressive thing about these girls was their will to try to do what they didn’t know they could and therefore to risk failure. Fear of failure is what stops many of us achieving our potential, plus lack of self belief, often caused by others. Many of their friends said: “You’ll never make it, you’re crazy!” “You’ll never raise that much money!” People say these things because deep down they wish they had the courage to do something like this and because

We are expecting the first frosts any time now, so be ready to dig up your dahlias once they have been blackened with the frost. Clean the tubers and place them upside down in a frost free area to dry off, then store them upright in a frost free area with dry material around them to ensure they do not shrivel. Garden spray chrysanthemums are also worth lifting, and storing damp in a garage or cold frame to take cuttings from next year. Continue to plant tulip bulbs, iris reticulate and other small bulbs – adding something new each year to provide a thrill of anticipation for the spring.
Prune your soft fruit trees to keep them open, cutting out all the fruiting stems from your blackberry and tying in the new stems horizontally. Check your remaining vegetable crops for pest and pigeon damage, taking appropriate action to ensure you have good supplies of food into the New Year.

Yeadon gets some X Factor!
Local People
19 year old Luke Bayer has already packed quite a lot into his young life. The talented youngster went to the Judges’ House stage of the X Factor a few years ago and only just missed out getting to the live performances. He has since studied Musical Theatre at SLP college in Garforth and appeared in well over fifty musicals and plays since first treading the boards over ten years ago. Luke wowed the X Factor judges with his excellent singing and a pop career is something that he is still thinking about; “I’d love to go into that side of the business. It really interests me but, after going so far in the X factor, I understand just how hard it is to make it. So I’m keeping my options open!” BrassNeck Theatre is delighted to have gained Luke’s services for their forthcoming production of the Broadway smash hit rock musical Rent, in which he will take on the challenging role of Angel. Rent was penned by Jonathan Larson and is an exuberant East Village rock version of Puccini’s opera La Bohème. The show won the Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The stirring and life-affirming score captures the heart and spirit of a generation of struggling artists in New York, battling the coming wave of gentrification. A time capsule of a world where hope crawls out of dark despair, these Bohemians find the salvation of love within each other and prove there can be a better world where art thrives, and everything good is free. Over the course of the production’s 12-year engagement on Broadway there were more than 5,000 performances - making Rent the seventh-longest-running Broadway show in history.

Although not a show that everyone will have heard of, Rent is both challenging and innovative to both audience and cast members and is a show not to be missed. Yeadon Carpets
When Darren Birch opened Yeadon Carpets on Ivegate in Yeadon he thought he’d found the ideal location for his new venture. In many ways he was right, it’s at the bottom of a bustling high street, easily accessed by drivers and those using public transport. He could not however, have anticipated the disruption caused by near constant road works right outside the shop. Since opening in October 2010 the road directly outside the shop has been dug up no fewer than 4 times. On the first occasion the road was closed for months over the winter period. The current ‘hole in the road’, which is partnered by another several yards away, deters people from accessing the shop frontage and undoubtedly means less footfall for all business on that section of road. The reason for the dig this time is a gas leak and it has taken several attempts to locate the cause of the problem. Whist there is no suggestion from any of the Ivegate traders that gas leaks should be ignored; there is anger that work seems to take weeks, sometimes months to complete. “We already have issues with parking in the town, with limited space available for shoppers” Darren told us “couple this with access to shop fronts being limited and it’s bad

news for all traders and for the town in general. What I would like to happen is for the work to be completed quicker as workmen seem to be waiting on surveyors and supervisors to give the go-a-head on the next stage of the work”. Covered has made attempts to speak with Yeadon & Otley ward councillors about the matter but has not yet received the courtesy of a reply.

Charity Money Mustered by Masters at Modernians Leeds Akkies RLFC and Leeds Rugby Foundation staged a hugely successful gala day of rugby league at Old Modernians recently, raising £448.35 for the Annabelle Rose Trust.
Masters teams from the host club, Farnley Falcons, West Leeds Eagles and Ossett Trinity all took part in the Annabelle Rose Challenge, along with players from Wetherby Bulldogs, Milford Marlins and Blackpool Stanley. Each player donated a £5 match fee towards the trust fund which was set up to provide six-year-old Annabelle, who was born with Quadriplegic Spastic Cerebral Palsy, with lifechanging treatment to enable her to walk. The day began with a junior rugby league taster session conducted by Leeds Rugby Foundation
Development Manager Sam Horner, which was attended by local youngsters as well as members of the neighbouring North Leeds Leopards Junior Rugby League Club, whilst the 500+ players and supporters in attendance at the Cookridge venue were also treated to special visits by Ronnie the Rhino and the Engage Super League trophy. Annabelle's proud dad, Akkies centre Ben Wardleworth, was overwhelmed by the support of all of his fellow masters players: "It was a great effort and a fabulous day. All the rugby lads have choked me a little as they are all somewhat of a ‘family’ and so willing to muck in for a good cause." His enthusiasm was shared by Horner, who added: "There's a genuine camaraderie between Masters players in Leeds. It's fantastic that our sport can bring people together in this way and a credit to Old Modernians for staging such a fantastic event."

Old Boys Mixed Fortunes Now three months into the season, ROBS FC have played eight games. After starting the season poorly with defeat in their first two games, things have got better with a draw away at the Three Horses Keighley and a win against Sporting Keighley both coming on the same ground. ROBS currently sit in seventh place in the league after playing four league games.
Things improved though and the determined side won through to the second round in two of three cup competitions. The Sunday Cup saw ROBS FC beaten by Idle United 3 – 0 at home and the final weekend in October saw them beaten 4 – 1 by Farsley 2009 FC in the League Cup. City Goalkeeper Daniel Hill gathers the ball
Horsforth opened the scoring after only two minutes but Leeds City responded almost immediately when Cameron Thompson scored from close range after a good run and cross down the right by Callum Abbott. Horsforth continued to have the greater possession but Leeds City matched their higher division opponents for much of the first half only to concede two goals in the last ten minutes through defensive mistakes to trail 1-3 at half time. At the break Leeds City replaced a defender with a forward player in order to try and reduce the deficit. The Horsforth forwards found more space as a result and soon made it 4-1. Leeds City goalkeeper Daniel Hill was in superb form and made several impressive saves before a header from a corner in the last five minutes rounded off the scoring. After beating Division 3 Gildersome 1-0 in the last round Leeds City were hoping to do something similar again today but despite a great effort Horsforth took their chances and deservedly went through to the next round.
ROBS FC have another cup game early in November, facing Gomersal in the County Cup at Hanson fields. Then it is back to the league to hopefully climb the table. Keep up to date with the ROBS FC team news and games online at www.robsfc.co.uk

Aussie Rules Coming to Cookridge?
Australian Rules Football team Leeds Minotaurs was formed in September by local trainer Rhys Long. Australian born and now Leeds-based Rhys used to coach two-times AFL North Grand Finalists Huddersfield Rams - and it was at the Rams that the Minotaurs played their very first match on 20 October. Avoiding the curious terminology necessary for a full ARF match report, suffice it to say that the more experienced home side prevailed, winning 72 points to 56. But it wasn’t all plain sailing – the Leeds side got the better of Huddersfield in the final quarter. Afterward, Rhys Long commented: "After our debut the club is buzzing and looking for more fixtures from mid November. We are hoping to adopt Old Modernians as our home ground – conveniently located, with many of our players drawn from there. “We currently have a pool of 25 players – enough to field a regular side as Aussie Rules is played in UK with nine per team (as opposed to 18 in Australia). Enquiries from new players will always be welcome, as indeed will any from potential sponsors.” Further information on 07581 715524 and pitchero. com/clubs/leedsminotaursarfc
