Hello and welcome to Edition 12 of Covered – the magazine that delivers. We’re often asked if Covered is part of a series of magazines from a large publisher or if we’re tied to a large media organisation. To the contrary, Covered is independently owned and operated and we pride ourselves on being part of the community in which we work. The editorial and images you see in Covered are, in the main, unique to us – researched, written and photographed by the team. If you’re looking for exclusive local content then look no further. This edition sees us celebrate our first year, and a highly successful one at that. With our distribution increased to an unrivalled 30,000 copies across north & west Leeds, we are the fastest growing publication in the area and the magazine everyone is talking about. My thanks are extended to our readers, loyal advertisers, contributors and the community for making us so welcome. Special thanks also to the Covered team. Here’s to the next 12 months!

Campaign update
Following last month’s report of the elderly resident who walked into the dangerously sited street sign situated in the middle of the footpath at the top of Town Street, there have been several further incidents involving double buggies - and also a person in a wheelchair who was unable to pass. As can be seen clearly this is a serious hazard and must be resolved as a priority. The verges around the roundabout at Woodside have now been tidied up and also some of the potholes along Broadway. There has been a vast improvement in the reduction of cars being parked on grass verges according to Kate Siddall – and following her comments regarding Victoria Walk and surrounding area in the November issue of Covered. Street scene The campaign was contacted soon after last month’s edition of Covered by a Company Director with premises on New Street. He claimed that the state of Kerry Hill at the junction with Town Street is ”in a state of permanent filth” and asked why the main routes are no longer being swept. Overdevelopment There is now a proposal to build up to 120 houses in the field along Outwood Lane which is designated as Green Belt and a similar application for 42 houses on the former Car Showroom on Low Lane. Both these developments are being opposed by local residents. One resident opposite the site on Low Lane said “we need more jobs being created for local people not more houses!” Mystery solved! Last month we asked why the steps between Town Street and the King Edwards estate are known locally as “The Chicken Steps”. Well, according to Mary Goodall, back

Train Spotters at Pudsey Civic Centre Pudsey Civic Centre has long been Mecca for many collectors of many things. Over the years it has hosted dedicated fairs for dolls houses and miniatures, antiques and collectibles, postcards, stamps and coins, model railways, militaria, books and, most recently, a fair for collectors of transport ephemera and memorabilia – mostly buses, trains and trams. Each unto his own You wouldn’t believe the frenzied activity at some of these fairs unless you saw it for yourself. You really wouldn’t. The fair at Pudsey Civic Centre on Saturday 14 January was a case in point. The hall and bar area packed tightly with exhibitors and collectors. All of them looking to sell or buy memorabilia related to scheduled transport. And it’s a boy thing – very nearly everyone there was male. Displays included a few vintage toy trains and model buses and cars, but the overwhelming majority of exhibits were dedicated to period transport memorabilia from 1900 to the present day. Though, curiously to the outsider, there wasn’t much relating

Chris Coates (pictured) is one of a team of six devotees in Lancashire collating and cross-referencing decades and thousands of train spotters’ records from railway lines on the west coast (well, somebody had to). The digests of those records are popular sellers among the spotting community, though not so popular that Frederic Forsyth need worry.

Buses and trams too Local author Jim Soper of Bramham was another researcher/compiler/writer there on the day. His five-volume work on the subject of Public Transport in Leeds was on sale on the stand of Leeds Transport Historical Society – of which he is a member. None of the information relayed in those five volumes was found and then taken for granted without collaborative evidence – fellow member Stephen Longthorpe; “There may be comment, say, somewhere on the internet that the train in question was out of service whenever – but if that information is incorrect then to rely on it would only be validation and multiplication of a falsehood” - Wow!
Just the ticket – exhibits of ephemera such as these are a collector’s delight (Photo: Ivor Hughes).

BBC Boards Baffle Bridge Boozers
Local Matters
"Horsforth landmark and traditional hostelry, The Bridge Inn, closed it's doors on Friday 20th January and windows were boarded up - causing alarm and near panic from regulars. Calm has now been restored and it has been made clear that the popular venue is not another victim of a dying pub trade, in fact The Bridge is as lively now as ever. The reason for this temporary closure was that a BBC television crew looking for a traditional welcoming pub were inside filming scenes for a new production of Kay Mellor's new drama The Syndicate. Manager Rachel Jenkinson even got in on the act and will appear in a scene, due to be screened in April. So, panic over - the Bridge Inn continues to provide great food, drink and company, just as always.
Cookridge Gardening Club Moving Forward in 2012 Cookridge Gardening Club got off to a strong start in 2012 with a well attended evening addressed by At Cookridge Gardening Club’s January meeting - Joan Hopper (President), gardening expert Tony Rymer; “Eighty great plants Katherine Hill (Secretary), Barry Temple (Treasurer), Tony Rymer (Guest for small gardens”. Cookridge Carpets

Mark Pennington knows a thing or two about carpets. Having spent a decade learning the craft of fitting them, he spent another twenty years selling them, working for one of the country’s leading wholesalers. All that experience is now channelled into his first retail venture, Cookridge Carpets. “Quality, service and value is what I represent” said Mark. “I aim to carve a reputation for being the best in the area and first choice for anyone buying carpets. I’m a local lad, a resident of Horsforth – the place I was born. “I’ve always supported local shops and businesses and I hope that others will do the same”. With no gimmicks and no unbelievable ‘offers’ Mark is playing it straight – it’s simply about great quality carpet at affordable prices, and with the best service and advice possible. Mark advises customers to take advantage of free measuring; “not so we can visit and give it the hard sell but so that we can advise customers how best to measure so that we can fit their new carpet in the most economical way, we want customers to keep coming back and they’ll only do that if we look after them the first time they buy from us.” Quality conscious Mark only uses the best manufacturers and wholesalers he has worked with in the past and prices range from £6.99M²-£49.99M² ensuring there are options to suit every budget. Call in to the showroom or give Mark a call for a free, no obligation home visit. Cookridge Carpets 254a Tinshill Road, Cookridge, LS16 4BT TEL: 0113 2611518

Good News for Horsforth!
Towards the end of February, the Police and PCSOs are to open a “drop-in centre” in the Old Library building. As a part of the Plus for Us there will also be the opportunity for Community volunteer helpers to work with the Police & PCSOs, to make their presence more visible in the town. The Police are also recruiting Special Constables to work with them to increase their presence protection in Horsforth. The Council’s joint funding for the PCSOs, through the Public Safety Committee, will continue. The Police are also hoping to have a more permanent base in Horsforth – more news of that later. They are also moving their Response Team to Weetwood Police Station.

The other Council Committees continue their work. Planning is particularly busy right now, where developers continue to look with interest at any available green space in Horsforth. The Committee can’t comment on any prospective development until a formal planning application is made. Hors’4th’ Beer and Cider Festival
Hors’4th’ Beer and Cider Festival is on Friday and Saturday 2 and 3 March in St Margaret’s Hall, from 1200 to 2300 each day. The annual event, organised by St Margaret’s Church, started in 2009 to raise funds towards a Parish Centre. This year’s festival will help fund an upgrade to the church’s antiquated heating system and repairs to the church tower. There are over 60 draught beers in the main hall, from all across UK - including a fair sprinkling from Yorkshire. There is live entertainment on the main stage. Downstairs in the cellar bar, Cider Corner has around 20 draught ciders and perries. There will also be a range of wines and bottled foreign beers. Home cooked hot meals and snacks are available in the café. Or, in the main hall, you can sample a Nanaimo bar, a Canadian dessert, in flavours to complement the festival beer and cider. The event attracts around 1500 visitors over 2 days. Local businesses, especially restaurants and bars, benefit from increased trade over the 2 days and some put on their own promotions to coincide with the festival.
(Photo: Ivor Hughes)
Entrance on the door costs £5, including a festival glass, programme and tasting notes - and a voucher for your first drink. At peak times you may have to queue for a short time. Last year the “house full” signs went up early on Friday evening and again on Saturday afternoon, as St Margaret’s Hall reached capacity. Those queuing outside then had to wait for someone to leave before being admitted! But everyone got in eventually. Get there early to avoid horsforthbeerfestival.co.uk

Building for the Future!
Some of the youngest children at the Froebelian school recently took delivery of a splendid new play house for their outdoor play area. There was great excitement when the house was delivered but as it came flat packed it needed the school’s caretaker, Mr Paul Trafford, to put it together. The building didn’t take him as long as he thought due to the assistance of four children from the Reception class, Dhilan Patel, Simran McCormack, Maria Speed and John Watt. ‘We love the house’ said Maria, ‘and it even has a real doorbell!’ The house, which has proved to be a great hit with pupils, is also equipped with a play kitchen and opening doors and windows to encourage role play. Mr Tranmer, the school’s headmaster said ‘It is important that the children have stimulating apparatus in their playground which encourages co-operative play and shared learning. We know the playhouse will also provide a lot of fun and entertainment for the children’.

Their next, on 13 March, is “Local Nature Reserves and Their Wildlife” with Steve Joul of Leeds Parks and Countryside Services. And on 8 May their AGM is to be followed by a presentation of the community initiative “Wharfedale and Airedale Review Development” (WARD). Cllr Townsley Says
Local Matters
The letters pages in Covered and my own mail show that inconsiderate parking is an ongoing issue in the community. So, here is the up-to-date position I have obtained straight from the horses’ mouths – those horses being Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police. They are condensed versions and should not be taken as an authoritative statement of the law - nor how either authority might respond in any given situation. LCC view on parking LCC has come to accept the fact that many residents have no realistic option other than to park partly on a pavement or verge. Otherwise they would have to park in a way that might obstruct access by emergency or service vehicles. The move to two (or more) car families is forcing them to rethink planning guidelines. Although LCC parking officers will ticket cars parked on, say, double yellow lines, their view is that it is for the police, with greater powers, to act in cases of alleged obstruction. LCC may intervene where there has been serious and sustained damage to the highway or where there is continued risk to safety. WYP position The West Yorkshire Police view is quite direct; pavements are for pedestrians. Having said that, the only legislation specific to the subject of parking on pavements relates to HGVs. they have to consider whether the vehicle is causing an obstruction. Their current position, based on experience and CPS advice, is that they are unlikely to act if there remains sufficient space on the pavement for, say, a pushchair or wheelchair to get by. Let me know Both LCC and WYP positions are realistic responses to the needs of today’s two-car families living in older houses built for families with none. The land is no longer in the green belt. It is classed as Greenfield and its planning designation is "Protected Area of Search". That means it is not guaranteed that housing will be built there but the Planning Inspector who looked into housing land a number of years ago felt that it could possibly be a suitable location in the future. Any landowner/developer interested in this site will then have the opportunity to submit to the Council their request that this land be allocated for housing purposes in the forthcoming City Plan. The Plan will be the subject of public consultation and residents will have the opportunity to raise views, concerns etc. The new Plan will replace the current Unitary Development Plan which allocated housing land and was based on providing land sufficient to build approximately 2000 houses each year. The new plan - based on Government guidance and information means that the Council will need to identify enough land for between 4500 to 5000 houses each year. It is as a result of this that the area of land at Moseley Wood Bottom could be included in potential development sites. Information on this will be issued by the Council between March and Autumn 2012. Some months ago I suggested one way for residents to try and get the best they can for the location would be to develop a Neighbourhood Plan. If you are interested in getting involved in establishing a plan for Cookridge then please feel free to contact me. Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com

The charity STARS, in association with STARBURST, is to present its very own and original pantomime in Adel & Ireland Wood Community Centre from Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 and then 25 February. The pantomime, as its name suggests, in based around classical horror characters such as Dracula and Frankenstein, with modern variations such as Granula (Dracula’s grandmother) thrown in for good measure. The pantomime was written by none other than Horsforth councillor Chris Townsley – an experienced writer and actor at both amateur and semiprofessional level. Though involved in an advisory and support capacity, Chris isn’t appearing in the pantomime itself.

Give Covered a call to claim Dear Covered, A question for your readers: Has anybody ever seen anyone or know of anyone that has been fined for allowing their dog to foul our parks? I’d be surprised; such is the on-going blatant disregard for others. The problem is not exclusive to one area – I know as I visit a number of local parks with my own dog.
I have witnessed people watching their dog foul and then leave the scene and when I confront them on it they speedily walk off, rather than picking it up. Our parks are used for leisure by young children and by our local sports clubs. I’m quite sure that most dog owners also have children or grandchildren who use the parks too. Pick up you lazy, lazy, disgusting people! And Leeds City Council - where are the dog wardens? I’d far rather see people fined for this unacceptable anti-social behaviour rather than drivers getting ticketed for ‘haphazardly’ parking, as reported in my recent copy of Covered. It’s everyone’s responsibility to pick up but it’s the council’s responsibility to enforce the bylaws. Pull your finger out LCC! Name and address supplied. Ed’s note: Good question – anybody willing to own up to being fined, or know of anybody that has been brought to book for allowing their dog to foul in public. Replies will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Dear Covered, The council has erected a concrete bollard and a concrete ball on the exit of The Old Ball car park. These are causing no end of problems for drivers; not being able to pass each other and not being able to enter or exit the car park. After cars being smashed, walls being demolished and the verges being absolutely destroyed I contacted the council about having them removed. I was told they would 'assess the situation' - this was four months ago. They need removing - the verges are unsightly and ruined. Mrs S Smith - resident of St Margaret's Road Cllr Townsley Responds: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have visited the site to view the problem and I sympathise with your correspondent. The council’s Highways Department advised me the concrete bollard and ball were installed following complaints of delivery vehicles damaging the grass

verge and pavement. The lack of turning space, due to cars parked opposite the car park entrance seems to be the main factor here, the possible remedy being to either ticket cars for causing obstruction or to restrict parking in that area altogether.

Four in One for Emmaus at Otley Boot
But the boot on 15 January boot was the first of the year, the one scheduled for the 8th having been cancelled due to poor weather and the threat of even worse to come. Though barely at half capacity in sub-zero temperatures, trading was fast and furious from twelve, when the public is admitted. Providing, of course, the stallholder was offering the right goods at the right price. Emmaus – who are they? One busy stand was the Leeds branch of Emmaus, a charity aiding the homeless. Conceived by a French monk (recently passed) the idea was imported into the UK. The Leeds branch, now under threat of closure due to cutbacks, opened 8 years ago. The general idea is for the seller to take money and the buyer to find savings unachievable elsewhere. But there can be added benefits. Emmaus’ presence raised public awareness. Among their sales, on the day, was a large quantity of reflective Sam Browne (ie military style) belts – for 50p each. Not only did buyers save money, their purchases no doubt helped save lives. The homeless, the buyers, the motorists, cyclists and pedestrians – everyone was happy.
NEIGHBOURHOOD DIRECT Joanne Staford, Stephen Cheslin and Steve McNiven of Emmaus Leeds, fundraising at Otley Sunday Boot – the only year-round weekly boot in north Leeds. 29 Local Ladies
CoveredCoach - with Susan Harper Todd Beating the New Year Blues Are you sticking to your New Year Resolution? Is it a bit wobbly and could go either way? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Now the celebrations are over, you’re suffering from the New Year blues! Though there isn’t that long to go, it’s still winter and it is much harder to stick to resolutions when it’s dark, cold and miserable outside. If New Year was in the middle of summer (like it is in Australia), it would be much easier as we feel more optimistic when it’s lighter, warm and sunny. It’s all to do with our mood. How we feel has a direct impact on our actions and motivation. The key is to find things that make you feel good. If you feel good you will stick to those Resolutions. This does not necessitate spending money. Look through old magazines and find pictures of things that give you a feeling of well being. It might be a beautiful place, a beach, countryside, lovely clothes, jewellery - it’s different for all of us. Cut out the pictures and stick them somewhere you see them regularly - on your fridge, cupboard, mirror.

Capture that lovely feeling they give you and hang on to it until the spring, knowing and imagining just how amazing you will feel if you do stick to your Resolution all year!

Jessica’s Sacks Appeal
The Midnight Walk is one the cities most popular charity events. It's a ladies only sponsored walk starting from Kirkstall on Saturday 12 May. You can choose between a distance of 7 or 10 miles and pound the streets of Leeds raising money for St Gemma's Hospice. Entry is £15 which includes a Midnight Walk t-shirt. St Gemma's also provides food and drink both during and after the walk. There will be a real party atmosphere from 8pm to get all the participants ready for their challenge. A firework display at 10pm will mark the start of the walk where all 1,000 ladies set off together. This is a sponsored event so participants are asked to raise as much money as they can for St. Gemma's Hospice. Visit www.leedsmidnightwalk.co.uk or call 0113 218 5505.

In December, Jessica Dixon appealed for Covered readers to drop into the salon with shoeboxes filled with toys and treats for disadvantaged children. The appeal, in conjunction with Banardo’s, prompted a healthy response with many readers dropping in with their gift. Jessica (pictured centre with L-R Elaine Dixon. Lauren maskill Lauren Fenlong, Stacey Smith) said, “Huge thanks to Covered readers, we managed to fill three sacks for the appeal”. The boxes were delivered over Christmas. Music For All Ages Did your child get a new musical instrument for Christmas? Are they driving you up the wall playing the same few notes over and over again? If so Leeds City Council’s music centres could be the answer. There are nine centres across the city, with the nearest to Covered’s distribution area being based at Horsforth School. Quality lessons in a fun environment cost just £3.50 for half an hour. The centres have expert teachers in all instruments and styles of music and singing, including rock bands and orchestras. Under 5’s are welcome to the join in the fun music group but it’s not just for children! If you’ve made a new year’s resolution to learn a new instrument or rediscover an old one,
there are lessons for adults as well. One centre’s oldest student is a beginner guitarist in their 90s, so age is no excuse. Crime Prevention on a Plate
That's the name of a joint initiative between Otley, Pudsey and Weetwood Police Stations, covering a good part of northwest Leeds. The arrival of snow in Waitrose car park, Otley, didn't stop PCSOs Mark Kelly (left) and Pete Andrews replacing normal number plate fixing screws with security ones - preventing the growing crime of number plate theft. The conversion is free of charge and takes around 10 minutes. The police will be rolling out the operation throughout the northwest Leeds policing area in weeks to come.

Emmerdale's Chris Chittell was guest auctioneer at a 40+ lot charity auction held in continuing support of last year's Rawdon Fun Day appeal, itself in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Tommy’s. This was one of the star lots - a dartboard signed by all competitors in the preceding week's BDO World Championship competition at The Lakeside. The dartboard made £500, helping raise £9,133 on the evening. Rawdon Fun Day 2012 is on 9th June - Covered will of course be providing full details nearer the date. The organisers are looking for sponsors and support, for full details please contact Mark Smithson on: 07515 918926

Stewart Andrew MP It was wonderful to bring January to a close with the Rawdon Fun Day auction and presentation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The fundraising efforts of the organisers brought in nearly £8000 for the local charity through the auction alone and I was, as always, impressed by the determination and hard work of the volunteers who contribute their time to raising money for this very worthy cause. In these uncertain economic times it is more challenging than ever for charities and I am pleased that the Government is taking steps to ease this burden, with programmes such as the Big Society Bank giving charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises access to greater resources. Before becoming an MP I worked in the charity sector, firstly for British Heart Foundation before moving to work in children’s hospices. I therefore understand the hard work and dedication that volunteers and charity workers put in to their fundraising and the impact this can have on the charities they are

Titans Take Title!

Leeds Trinity Titans have become the champions of BUCS Yorkshire Rugby League, following a 32-28 victory over Sheffield. Titans won the division with a game to spare, one which they won 58-4 against closest challengers Bradford. Titans player Ashley Pemberton said; “It’s been a good way to finish my time at Leeds Trinity, winning the league unbeaten is a great achievement.” Titans have enjoyed an imperious season and won all 10 of their league meetings ahead of the play-offs. One match that the players are never likely to forget was the triple figure score line back in November. Looking back on the 100-0 demolition of Lincoln, Pemberton remarked; “We’ve had some scares and close games over the season but have also racked up some big points which underlined our credentials. It’s pleasing to know that we deserved our title as champions and we can now look forward to the

Aireborough currently lie 10 points behind 3rd placed Rotherham Phoenix, but will be soon on the tails of their rivals if they continue with their form of late.
Aireborough were in fine form for the start of the New Year, winning all three of their matches including a whopping 71-7 win away at York Railway Institute. The Yeadon side racked up a total of 133 points and conceded a mere 23 in what was an imperious month for the club.
Aireborough have now won four matches in a row and will be desperate to keep up the run as they aim for promotion. Farsley AFC Farsley’s stuttering start to 2012 continued when they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Warrington Town in January. Despite recording their first win of the season at Warrington back in August with a 5-2 victory, AFC were unable to come back from Matty Cross’ 10th minute goal – a wind-assisted corner. Earlier in January, Farsley had already succumbed to a 3-2 defeat against local rivals Garforth Town, though an excellent second half performance at Mossley had seen them come from behind to win 2-1. Nonetheless, due to their excellent run of form before the New Year – eight wins out of nine - Neil Parsley’s men remain in the play-offs chase in the Evo-Stik League Division One North.

The 2008 Women’s FA Cup Finalists are presently second in the National league, closely behind Sunderland. Their match on 22 January 22 was in the West Riding County Women’s Cup when amateur side Tingley Athletic visited. There were no surprises there, with the favourites winning 9-0 and hitting the woodwork as many times.

Horsforth started the New Year with a home fixture against Crooked Billet, somehow finding themselves losing 4-0 and staring down the barrel of defeat against very poor opposition. A stirring comeback was produced however as Fairweather showed the grit, determination and incredible team spirit to fight back and earn a point. Veteran striker John Newsome in true Roy of the Rovers style powering home a bullet headed in stoppage time to cement a 4-4 draw; leaving manager Martin Woods doing cartwheels at the final whistle. Fairweather, with momentum on their side would have given their right arm for victory the following week against Beeston St Anthony’s but saw a 1-0 half-time lead crumble into a 4-1 defeat and leave the club in utter disappointment. February, the month of love, is here however and Fairweather will be hoping Cupid is on their side as they face three trips away from home against tough opposition before ending the month at home to Old Tree. 9-0 was a popular scoreline on the day. Not only did Leeds Ladies secure that margin against Tingley, Farsley u/14s did the same to Wortley Juniors. Why was this Farsley player smiling after having been taken off at half time? Well, his first half hat trick had already helped put Farsley on the way.

Covered Sports Writer Goes the Extra 26 Miles! It’s getting to crunch time for any runners who are taking part in the London Marathon in April and Jake Harvey, Covered’s own sports writer, is one of them. As a first time runner he’s also “mixed in emotion of excitement and utter nervousness”. For Jake, the closest to long distance running in recent years has been to the chip shop and back so to suddenly decide on running 26.2 miles around the capital city was a leap of faith. However, he’s running for a fantastic charity called Whizz Kidz who help to give disabled children a better life and it’s something that’s really getting him through the training. As a first time runner, he has no idea what to expect on the day, other than knowing there will be a few people around in London that day the marathon route is pretty alien to him; “I think it’s best to pray and repeatedly tell myself it’s a typo and I’m only really expected to run 2.6 miles and downhill!” At the time of writing Jake has less than 12 weeks left of training. So, who else in the area is running or has run the famous race? What can Jake expect
Yarnbury Edged Out
Yarnbury were involved in just one league fixture in January due to postponements, losing 23-21 to Hullensians. Yarnbury played well in the fixture but for all their hard-word and graft, were found wanting when it came to crossing over for the tries. Some beautiful flowing rugby on the attack and some stern defending in the middle would normally see Yarnbury topple their opposition but credit must go to Hullensians who battled just as well. The Horsforth club were sat just a few places beneath their Hull counterparts prior to kick-off and were desperately unlucky not to get anything out of the game. That bad luck was even more evident

of the day, and at what point might he ‘hit the wall?’ He’s heard the expression so many times but has no idea what to expect. His immediate feeling is that the film ‘Run Fat Boy Run’ might be a little farfetched but does hope that his wall is at least cushioned… If you can, please check out the fantastic charity Whizz Kidz that Jake is running for, they really are awe inspiring and make a real difference. Alternatively log onto justgiving.com/Jake-Harvey2 where it shows what the money can do for a disabled child. If you have any tips, messages (and preferable shortcuts) feel free to e-mail Jake - he’d love tp hear from Covered readers. E-Mail - Jake@klassit.com considering the Brownberrie Lane outfit were ahead with 10 minutes remaining, as Hull stole in for a winning try. A body blow to Yarnbury, but they turned their fortunes around with a comprehensive 36-0 friendly win over Old Otliensians at the end of January. February is likely to be a key month for Yarnbury in the Yorkshire Division Two as they face three sides lurking at the foot of the table. Ripon and Skipton are the trips away for Yarnbury before they play host to struggling Moortown at the end of the month. Yarnbury will be hoping for maximum points from the three matches and you can keep up to date with how the side are doing on the club’s website; Yarnbury.co.uk

Old Mods Stop Flight Gallant Guiseley of the Phoenix Produce the Goods Old Modernians got off to the perfect New Year, brushing off 2011 with a memorable 12-8 victory over 3rd placed Rotherham Phoenix in the Yorkshire Division Three. Tom Nutman (pictured) got Mods off to a flying start, crossing for the opening try against Rotherham.
Mods came into the New Year on the back of seven straight defeats but got off to a tantalising January, first beating Phoenix before edging Burley 5-0 to complete a season double over the side. The Cookridge side who now sit in 12th place were beaten at the end of the month by 6th place Old Rishworthians but two wins out of three was excellent for the previously struggling Old Mods. Old Modernians will be desperate to keep their recent high performances up in February as they face the two closest teams to them in the division. First up, Mods face 11th placed Northallerton at home, a side who beat them 20-8 earlier in the season, before travelling to Hessle who lie in 13th position. Hessle were dispatched 10-5 by the Cookridge side back in October and Modernians will be looking to grab another double to go with the recent Burley victory.
Guiseley produced the comeback of all comebacks this month with an Incredible 4-3 win over Greater Manchester side Droylsden. A strong January saw Guiseley pick up five points out of a possible eight and progress in two cup competitions. The Lions went in at the break 3-0 down but scored a miraculous six goals in a nine minute spell, however two were disallowed. Returning marksman James Walshaw grabbed a hat-trick in seven minutes as he came off the bench with 20 minutes remaining. Guiseley also progressed to the West Riding County Cup semi-final following a home victory over neighbours FC Halifax and saw off promotion rivals Stalybridge Celtic to reach the last 16 of the F.A Trophy. The mighty Lions travel to high flying Blue Square Premier Side Cambridge United in the F.A Trophy this month knowing that three more wins in the competition will see the side walking out in a final at Wembley. A busy February sees promotion contenders Guiseley play seven matches Including a less than romantic tie away to FC Halifax in the Blue Square North on Valentine’s Day. Entry prices into Nethermoor are £10 for adults, children/ concessions £6.00 and accompanied under-12s just £1.00. To keep up to date with the club matters on Guiseleyafc.co.uk or follow the club on Twitter @Guiseleyafc for live match updates on matchdays home and away.

Harmonious Evenings at Rawdon Conservative Club
Drunken Sailor was the warm up song being sung by twenty of the thirty members of Leeds & Bradford Barbershop Harmony Club when our photographer popped in to see – and hear - them practising in the smaller function room at Rawdon and Guiseley Conservative Club one Monday evening in January. Sung in quite restrained four part unaccompanied harmony, rather than in its more familiar guise as a sea shanty. And then onto a series of exercises on vowel sounds. The club meets for practice, training or rehearsals every Monday evening from 7.30 to 10. They enter regional and national competitions – the season for those is usually spring. Performing under the stage name The Big County Chorus, they can also make as many as a dozen show appearances every year. New members welcome, lessons given. Secretary Geoff Mott 0113 3910149.

Calverley Spring Clean – Garage Sale Calverley is gearing up for a village-wide ‘Spring Clean’ event on Saturday 17th March. The event, which is being organised by the local schools, will see residents throughout the village setting up stalls in their garages, driveways and front gardens, selling on their no longer needed items. Or alternatively home baking or craft items they’ve made – it’s anything goes really. From large items such as lawnmowers, children’s bikes and exercise equipment, to smaller items such as clothes, toys and baby items, people can sell whatever they wish. Participants pay just £5 for the early bird registration or £10 for a stall and can then keep all their own profits. The organisers will publicise the event widely throughout the village and surrounding areas and there will be maps printed showing visitors the locations of all the different stalls. Rachel Cline, one of the event organisers said: “The idea is for local people to come together to create a communitywide sale event that will draw people to the village and hopefully earn participants some cash. Spring is the time we all traditionally want to clean up and clear out and the beauty of this event is that it’s incredible easy. There’s no loading up the car to travel to a car boot sale or tip. People can sell directly from their own drives or front gardens.” People interested in participating but who do not live in Calverley may take a stall in the Conservative Club. The event is sponsored by a number of local businesses and organisations, who have all pledged their support. The event will take place Saturday, 17th March 2012, 12 – 4pm If you are interested in having a stall, please email: calverleyspringclean@gmail. com or contact 0113 2195150. You can also follow the event on Facebook: ‘Calverley Spring Clean – Garage Sale’.
