HorsforthMatters Thank you to all who have taken the time to contact us following last months article entitled “Horsforth, let down by Leeds” The response was amazing and I am delighted to be able to report some improvements with the huge potholes on Outwood Lane being filled and work in the Victoria’s now completed.
with BOB Horsforth
2. The length of Town Street between North Broadgate and Broadgate lane. 3. The top of Batchelor Lane 4. Hall Lane 5. Lickless Drive If you would like to nominate your own problem area please email bobhorsforth@rocketmail. com and we will add to the appropriate section on our website - http://horsforthletdownbyleeds. blogspot.com/ Another issue raised by many residents is the problem of dog fouling on public footpaths and playing fields. A problem that could be removed if Horsforth were to be allocated its fair share of more strategically placed “Dog Bins”. If you know of a place where you feel a bin would be useful please let me know.
There is still a huge amount of work to be done to bring our roads and footpaths up to a reasonable standard as is evident by taking a trip down Broadgate Drive - the winner of Horsforth’s “street in the worst state of repair award”. To help identify the longest existing potholes across the Town I will continue to keep a log of repairs outstanding for over six weeks and update the list and publish the “Top five dangerous potholes” each edition.
The current top 5 are: 1. The entire length of Broadgate Drive
6
This month we also look at another problem that is constant throughout the township, that of graffiti on public signage and infrastructure. It seems that there is not a street sign, bus shelter, telephone box or wall (including our local Library doorway which had paint splattered over it twelve months ago!) that has escaped the dreaded spray can. Graffiti is a real problem and I will continue to urge the city council to take the appropriate action wherever possible. Although the council is not directly responsible for graffiti removal on private land and privately owned installations, such as phone boxes, pressure must be applied to ensure that those responsible are on top of graffiti removal. Let us know about any graffiti, particularly offensive graffiti that you’d like to be dealt with. Remember, Horsforth Matters.

RIGHT TO REPLY Dear Covered,
I am getting rather annoyed with Bob Horsforth, who ever he or she is. This person continues to bleat about potholes. I have got news for this person. There are thousands of potholes, not just in Horsforth, but Leeds and probably hundreds of thousands throughout the country. Doesn’t he realise we have had rather a severe winter. So much so that The Government has given local authorities £100 million, towards pothole repairs? This person tells of his band of good deed doers. In Horsforth I have hundreds of such, good folk. They do, what residents have done for years. They report things to my colleagues and I; we are elected to deal with issues of this nature. Potholes, when reported are, generally speaking filled in within 48 hours. Why doesn’t Bob join us in fighting for the common good? Why doesn’t he reveal himself? He should contact one of his three City councillors so that we can work together, we do not have a problem with that so why should he? Our details are: andrew.barker@leeds.gov.uk brian.cleasby@leeds.gov.uk christopher.townsley@leeds.gov.uk Yours sincerely, Cllr. Chris Townsley Liberal Democrat Horsforth Ward christopher.townsley@leeds.gov.uk

Dear Covered, Following your Horsforth Matters article in Edition 1 of LS18 Covered, I felt compelled to write in regarding the lack of rubbish / dog waste bins in the Horsforth, especially around the Newlaithes School area. As a responsible dog owner myself, I always ensure I have plenty of poop bags with me when walking my dog and ensure all “business” left by my dog is immediately cleaned up, on both pavements and grassy areas. The same unfortunately cannot be said for fellow dog walkers in the Newlaithes area, particularly over the winter months when the belief seems to be that snow & ice will absorb their dogs doing and it is acceptable to simply leave it on the pavement and walk on. Perhaps an increase in the number of litter bins and designated dog waste bins would encourage people to bag it and bin in and reduce the risk of dogs being banned from excising in public parks and grass area? Regards, Mrs S Baldwin Newlaithes Road

Readersletters cont. Dear Covered, Congratulations on the 1st Edition of Covered LS18, my Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. We have entered and hope to win the competitions! I’d like to bring to your attention the state of King Edward Avenue, which is splattered with potholes – some of which are huge. It seems that the road has been neglected for some time. On a recent trip to Leeds we cut through the Hawksworth estate, where the council seems to have spent considerable time and money on road alterations. Huge speed bumps have been installed and the road layout has been changed which we feel has made the roads there more dangerous. I wonder, would it have made more sense to spend the money on dealing with problem roads, such as King Edward Avenue? Name and Address Supplied.
What do you think – are the changes on the Hawksworth Estate an unnecessary expens e? Would the money be better used resurfacing areas such as King Edward Avenue? Let us know - office@covered-magazine.net or write to Letters. Covered Magazine. Hillside, Leeds. LS11 8ND.

Bandstand revamp Last month our front cover was a great image of the bandstand in Hall Park. The picture was taken before a major revamp, funded by the Friends of Hall Park who raised £1000 from catering at band concerts and Horsforth Gala. A further £600 was donated by Cllr Andy Barker and city councilors gave £1220 from their MICE (miscellaneous improvements to the community and environment) fund. Money well spent? Let us know what you think.
Local resident, Astrid Wells, is a doctor currently finishing her Foundation Training in Bradford. Working with a number of charities abroad, two of which are HELPS International and Casa Guatemala, Astrid will be based in remote communities in the jungle in Guatemala to help improve health and education. She is currently in the process of fundraising for her year volunteering. As well as helping to fund the trip, this money will be used to donate medical equipment and supplies to both charities. Horsforth Community Environment Action Group A litter picking morning organisised by Horsforth Community Environment Action Group has been a huge success. HCEAG was formed in February by local resident Jonny Collett who told us: As a community we can make a difference in Horsforth, so we can be proud to live and share the beauty of Horsforth and its surrounding countryside”. HCEAG has already begun making a difference in the area by clearing litter and junk from the meadow area of Hawksworth Wood. A whole lorry load has been cleared including a sofa, a vacuum cleaner and numerous bike parts. Much of the litter was product packaging and had been there for months, possibly years. Leeds City Council provided Dan the Ranger to remove the items and help with the litter pick. Well done to all who attended on the day. If you do use Hawksworth Wood, or any other area blighted by litter why not join HCEAG on the next litter pick? For details visit the group Facebook page, or send an email to chris@covered-magazine.net and we’ll put you in touch.

Waste Site Closure Residents are reminded that the Calverley Bridge zero waste site has now closed. Leeds City Council’s executive board agreed to the site’s closure last year after a detailed review revealed it accepted just 1,479 tonnes of items for recycling in 2008/9. This is only around 15% of what the busiest sites, Meanwood Road and Holmewell, took in during the same period. It is less than a 15-minute drive to the larger Milner’s Road (Yeadon) and Pudsey household waste sites, both of which have the capacity to accept more recycling than Calverley could. Users of the Calverley site are being recommended to make use of these sites instead. Councillor Tom Murray, executive member for environmental services, said: “We are committed to helping Leeds become a much more sustainable city and developing more efficient waste management practices is a vital part of that. Closing Calverley Bridge, while introducing new kerbside recycling collections in the area, will help us achieve this. To find out more about what can be recycled at household waste sites go to www.leeds.gov.uk/ recycleforleeds or call 0113 222 4406. Are you concerned that this will lead to fly tipping in the area? Should recycling be made easi er, with more collection points rather than less? Concerned about potential redevelopment of the site? Let us know what you think – office@covered-magazine.net

CoveredPubProfile The Bridge Inn on Low Lane, Horsforth first opened it’s doors as a public house on Good Friday 1868 and has since forged a reputation as one of Horsforth’s gems. Situated away from the hustle and bustle of Town Street and New Road Side, The Bridge has maintained traditional values and has all the ingredients of a great local – good food, good ale and good company. During the spring and summer months the pub quite literally blooms, with great floral displays and hanging baskets brightening up this corner of Horsforth and making the pub a local landmark. The Bridge is proud to have won five Gold
Awards from Horsforth in Bloom over the last 3 years and the large, enclosed beer garden is a strong contender for the best in the area. Highlights from the extensive menu include an all day breakfast and ‘Stoved Chicken’, both at just £5.95. Bar Manager Rachel Jenkinson told Covered “ All food served in The Bridge is home made and freshly prepared on the premises on a daily basis. And our famous home made pies are second to none!” We’d definitely recommend readers put this to the test!
If you’re looking for a great place to settle in for the day or night to watch all the sporting action then this is it. Support The Fund Voluntary organisation, Horsforth Minibus Fund, can often be seen whizzing round the area helping residents get where they need to be. The 17 seat minibus (pictured) was bought new 15 months ago, paid for by the fund and with help from local councilors. Fund secretary, John Hardcastle told us “the minibus fund was set up to help Horsforth’s residents in as much and in as many ways as possible. On Mondays the vehicle is used to transport people between their homes and The Grove Methodist Church and Woodside Methodist Church, both of whom have fellowship gatherings. Tuesday mornings we go to various different supermarkets shopping, locally and as far as Booths at Ilkley and Asda at Bradford”. On Friday mornings the bus is always bound for Morrisons in Horsforth and will pick up residents at their home, return them to their door and carry their shopping in for just £2.00! Summer day trips include dales villages, market towns and seaside resorts. Forthcoming trips include: Skipton, (Sat16th April, Market Day - £7) Ripon, (Thurs 28th April, Market Day - £8) and Scarborough (Wed. 15th June - £11). A deposit of £5 per person is required. To help pay for maintenance and running costs, the fund will hire the bus out to groups or families who require transport. “You can support us and do yourselves a favour by asking us if the minibus and driver is available”. Says John. Although the fund does not do any kind of commercial private hire or self-drive they may be able to help residents out. “As we say, we are here to help the community as much as possible”. added John. For further information on supporting or using the minibus, please contact John Hardcastle. 0113 2587451. Email: jacastle77@aol.com or visit: www.horsforthminibus.co.uk

CoveredRecommends Newly opened café and delicatessen, Deli Stop, is a bit of a gem for lovers of fine continental style cuisine. Owner Michele Saulino, who hails from Avellino on Italy’s west coast, wanted to bring a taste of Italian flair and fayre to Horsforth – he explains “ I am passionate about good food, good service and authentic ingredients and I wanted to share this with people in my area”. Situated in the former travel agents on Long Row, Deli Stop has undergone complete transformation. Now a comfortable, bright, bustling café with exposed stonework and tasteful décor, Deli Stop offers an amazing range of Italian tit-bits to eat in or take away. Products in the chiller include: Serrano ham (on or off the bone), Iberico Chorizo, cooking Chorizo, sun dried tomotoes, continental cheeses and, of course, a great selection of olives. A great choice of specialist pasta, Arborio rice,

After then, treat yourself to a sandwich or pannini such as Crostini con Formaggio di Capra (grilled goats cheese & caramelised balsamic onions, served with mixed salad and a garlic, honey and mustard dressing) or relax with an authentic Italian Espresso and watch the world go by. Ivory Dental Ivory Dental is a thoroughly modern family dental practice. Conveniently located on Town Street, the practice was formally J G Hodgson and when Bradley Thornton took over the name was changed to Ivory Dental. The name change reflects a programme of modernisation that means patients can continue to experience the very best that modern dentistry has to offer. Bradley, who studied at Leeds University took over the practice from John Hodgson who remains at the practice along with Brian Griffiths. “Dentistry is evolving” explained Bradley “new techniques and training need to be embraced by any dental practice that wants to provide it’s patients with all the choices available – this is what Ivory Dental is about”. Ivory Dental Practice offers a comprehensive range of general dental treatments, as well as routine check-up appointments in order to help keep your teeth healthy. Bradley told us “Routine dentistry forms a main part of our philosophy - prevention is better than cure. We encourage patients to come to see the dentist and hygienist at regular intervals, as this will ensure you will enjoy long term oral health.” A friendly, calm and comfortable environment gives patients, young and old, great confidence in the team around them. “We’re great with kids!” said Bradley “We love to see children! Our aim is 22
for children to grow up with great teeth and the knowledge to help them keep their teeth for life. We place great emphasis on making visits to the dentist relaxed, fun and friendly and we encourage kids to meet the team who can give tips on diet and toothbrushing. Appropriate dental care for children can prevent dental problems later on in life.” The surgery offers a full range of cosmetic treatments too. Bradley is certified to fit the Inman Aligner, which can straighten teeth in weeks, and the practice also offer the Clearstep Invisible Brace. Bradley told us “ From simple whitening procedures to complete smile makeovers we can offer a variety of services”. Procedures include: crowns, bridges, veneers, tooth whitening, dentures, orthodontics and implants. The practice is proud to be a member of the British Dental Bleaching Society and is a BDA Good Practice member, which requires the practice to demonstrate a high standard of patient care and excellent quality of dentistry. Peace of mind indeed for all Ivory Dental patients. Ivory Dental Practice, 108-110 Town Street. Horsforth. LS18 4AH Tel: 0113 258 3349 www.ivory-dental.co.uk

From day one, Rainbow has built its reputation as one of the best companies in the region, only promoting genuine offers and giving you the best route to great deals on revamping your home’s exterior. With so many competitors, this reputation has been achieved solely through leaving customers delighted by the results of hard work and commitment.
Managing director Anthony Lynch has 19 years of experience in the glazing industry and says: “Rainbow will stop you from falling for quotations from commission-hungry salesmen.”
Rainbow’s customers are happy to recommend them to friends and family, and speak highly of the quality, craftsmanship and service received from start to finish. By liaising directly with one of the top people within the company, customers gain access to a wealth of experience and the ability to advise on what is best for individual needs. Many replacement window companies use over-inflated quotes in order to make their final prices appear incredibly 26
All Rainbow’s work is completed by highly skilled members of the team, providing a personal and trustworthy service which has left thousands of customers highly satisfied. If you would like to experience this service for yourself visit the Rainbow Office at 185 Butcher Hill, Moor Grange, Leeds 16, or call them now on 0800 183 2015. You can also visit the website at www.rainbowltd.co.uk. Some don’t believe it, but Rainbow is the only genuine replacement windows, conservatories, doors and roofline company which still doesn’t have salespeople.
Lose weight
– gain pounds for charity!
Winston’s Wish is a charity that helps children re-adjust to life following the death of a parent or sibling by providing professional assistance before, during and after bereavement. In 2009 Abigail Kent lost her sister, Gemma, to cancer. Gemma left behind two young children and a husband. Abigail found the support and resources provided by Winston’s Wish invaluable and decided to use the best of her abilities to raise much needed revenue and support for the charity. Last year Abigail raised a massive £15,000 for the charity by hosting a black tie ball, running both the Leeds 10K and Great North Run and walking the Great Wall of China! Aiming to double that in 2011 Abigail has enlisted the support of three overweight ladies who have committed to a sponsored slim. Local wellness clinic, SureSlim UK, will help them on the way. Anne Hughes of SureSlim says “We’ve donated 3 diet plans to ladies who have repeatedly tried to lose weight in the past but feel that raising money in support of this worthy charity would give the extra push they need and for every person that enrolls with SureSlim on the back of the sponsored slim I will also donate £20 to Winstons Wish”. For more information and sponsorship details, please email Abigail Kent at: Abigail.kent1@btinternet.com or contact Anne Hughes at SureSlim UK on 01943 884968. The EC Block Exemption Regulation 1400/2002 (October 2003) allows motorists more flexibility in selecting where they can get their car serviced. Thanks to this legislation, maintenance and service work does not have to be done by the main dealer as long as the garage uses Original Equipment 'Matching Quality' parts, and are recorded as such, and the garage follow the manufacturer's service schedules. The Block Exemption Regulation (BER) covers service and maintenance during the warranty period and prohibits vehicle manufacturers’ warranties from including conditions that require: all normal maintenance be provided within the vehicle manufacturer’s network all parts used must be the manufacturer’s original spare parts So what does this mean to the motorist?

Covered Business Profile
Mark Smith has always enjoyed tinkering with cars – it’s his hobby, his passion and his business – Mark’s committed to cars. The MotorHouse, began life in 1985 when Mark started restoring classic and vintage cars in his garden before moving onto servicing and repairs of newer cars. His popularity forced a move to premises just off the ring road at West Park. Mark says “We moved from Horsforth to West Park in 2007 because we just didn’t have the space to carry out all the work we were getting. We had one ramp in Horsforth and one mechanic and took our MOTs to another garage”. The new building, a former button dyeing factory, needed a major re-vamp taking eight months, before reopening as a garage. You wouldn’t believe it now though, customers can relax in comfort in the reception area or watch safely through a window into the large workshop
as their car is being put through its MOT – Mark has made a serious investment in this business. The MotorHouse specialises in VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles but carry out work on any make or model. You can be assured that whatever you drive, your pride and joy will be in safe hands – as a Bosch Car Service Centre, The MotorHouse is approved by the Office of Fair Trading. Mark explains “We gained the Bosch accreditation when we moved here. There is only one Bosch Car Service Centre in each postcode (LS16). Having the Bosch accreditation means we have to keep up very high standards in everything we do and we are audited yearly. We work hard to keep our Bosch title”. This gives you peace of mind in knowing that you are going to be given not only the best technical service, but also the best customer service. The MotorHouse now has three MOT ramps as well as a flush-
30
level ramp for vehicles with a low ground clearance. Vintage and classic vehicles are also in safe hands here as Mark’s specialist testers have great knowledge in this field. The team can also MOT motorcycles and motorhomes. Courtesy cars are available on request should you need to leave your vehicle, alternatively a lift can be arranged to get you where you need to be. The MotorHouse truly does offer a great service….and MOTs, and diagnostics, and servicing, and bodywork, and much more. Give The MotorHouse a call today for a hassle free experience. Yarnbury RFC Yarnbury’s Yorkshire Division 2 campaign is on full steam and the team are flying high with a great run of victories seeing them rise to a respectable 4th in the table following a convincing 20 – 12 victory at home to Moortown on Saturday 12th March Having been relegated from Division 1 last year Yarnbury have seen a turnaround in form under the guidance of England U20 Counties coach Bob Hood and are now the top placed Leeds side in the division. Bob, who has been with Yarnbury since 1993, made over 300 appearances as flanker for a number of Yorkshire teams including Roundhay, Headingley, Bradford and Bingley. He made the Yorkshire Colts squad in 1972-3 and played for England Colleges. He was also a trialist for the England Under-23 side. Bob’s coaching is not confined to Yarnbury; he is very involved with Yorkshire RFU and in 1999 was appointed Head Coach of England U20’s. Club Committee member John Rawson told us “at the start of the season we were getting pummelled, but now we’re on such a run! We’re really flying now and we’ve a slight chance of promotion”. Local rivals Moortown, West Leeds, West Park, Roundhegians and Leodiensian will all be keeping a close eye on results with the next ‘derby’ game taking place on Saturday 14th May against Leodiensian. Kick off is 3pm at Yarnbury’s Brownberrie Lane ground and it’s the final game of the season so if you can, please get along and show support for your local team. Yarnbury RFC. Horsforth Hall Park Cricket Club A brief history
One of two Clubs in Horsforth, Hall Park Cricket Club were founder members of the Airedale and Wharfedale Senior Cricket League, formed in 1936. Prior to this the club played in the Aire/ Wharfe Section of the Yorkshire Council. Cricket in Hall Park was first played around 1860 and remains popular with spectators on sunny weekends. The Hall in the Park was built in 1669 by the Stanhope Family and up to 1932 was privately owned. The Park was only open to the public for an annual carnival and for agricultural shows. Players and spectators had access to the cricket ground, but were escorted to and from the park at the beginning and the end of each match – it’s a far more relaxed affair these days. Extracts from the scorebook of 1901, shows that Hall Park played such teams, as Harrogate, Saville Town, Churwell, Dewsbury, Hanging Heaton, and Settle. (That must have been quite a journey in 1901.) It is believed that teams changed in the Hall prior to 1921. In 1921 an army barrack was purchased from Catterick, This building has a veranda which is still there today and a (new) timber frame
38
building was built in the late 1970’s, In 1932 the cricket ground was given to the club by for as long as cricket was played. A rent of one shilling (5p) was paid to the executors of the Mathieson Trust. The Mathieson family were the last owners of the park. Cricket is still played in the park today. The club is looking forward to the 2011 season and welcomes players who would like to play in the Airedale and Wharfedale League. The club has a junior section and would like to encourage all juniors to come along and experience the game of cricket. The club house has recently undergone refurbishment and is available to the public. It has catering facilities, a bar, lounge, changing rooms, and showers. Hall Park’s season starts on 16th April when the 1st X1 take on Ilkley away whilst the 2nd XI are at home to Follifoot. Take a stroll round the park and cheer your local team on! “if there’s a budding Alistair Cook or Tim Bresnan in your family, take them along for some expert coaching”. Horsforth Cricket Club We’re lucky to have two cricket clubs to support in Horsforth. This month we take a look at Horsforth Cricket Club, located on Brownberrie Lane, close to the Old Ball. The club plays in the Airedale & Wharfedale Senior League and in the Headingley & District 20/20 evening league so there are always plenty of matches to cheer along to and local pride is always at stake! With the season opener just a couple of weeks away, pre-season training sessions at Headingley Nets have been well attended. The club is looking forward to welcoming overseas player, Adam Mabb, from Australian club Bundaberg. In return, young Horsforth players, Alex Lines and Oliver Hardaker have spent the winter in Queensland playing for Bundaberg – this is a truly international club, right on our doorstep! Oliver, by the way, got a lot of coverage last season after he scored a world record 329 not out in a cup game for Horsforth against Upper Wharfedale. Horsforth CC has a thriving junior section catering for boys and girls from Under 9’s up to Under 17’s. A large number of junior players have progressed to the senior sides. The junior teams train on Monday & Tuesday evenings throughout the summer so if there’s a budding Alistair Cook or
Tim Bresnan in your family, take them along for some expert coaching. For those with a little less energy, the Horsforth CC bar is open most evenings during the summer and is open all day Saturday & Sunday. Sit back, relax and watch one of 2 big screens with Sky Sports. A hard-working “Kitchen Krew” provides tea & coffee on senior match days, as well delicious burgers and bacon sandwiches when the junior teams are at home on Friday evenings & Sunday mornings. The season starts on Saturday 16th April, with the 1st Team away to Adel, while the 2nd Team are at home to Pool. Other big games coming up in the early part of the season include: North Leeds in the Waddilove Cup on 8th May and an eagerly anticipated clash with local rivals, Horsforth Hall Park on Spring Bank Holiday weekend. If you can’t wait for the first competitive match, go along on 9th April at 1:30pm when the first team takes on Farsley in a pre-season friendly. Horsforth Cricket Club. Brownberrie Horsforth.
