Following last months article on the many areas around the town that stand neglected by the City Councils Grass Cutting contractors I have received more emails highlighting similar areas of concern. These include lengths of Broadway, Haigh Wood Crescent, Stanhope Drive and around St James’s Flats. The full list will be collated and sent to Leeds City Council for immediate action. Good News I am delighted to report that work has commenced this month on re-surfacing the footpath along Broadgate Lane; the “Forgotten Horsforth” Group first highlighted this long-standing problem back in September 2010. I have also received confirmation from the Clerk at Horsforth Town Council that replacements for the old and damaged signs that welcome visitors to the town are to be included in the Town council “5 Year” plan.
Low Lane – Parking is causing a concern for residents
that the 20 MPH speed limit is adhered to in this restricted area. Illegal Parking The problems caused by cars being inconsiderately parked continues unabated with a walk along Low Lane and Troy Road identifying 173 illegally parked cars on footpaths, grass verges and across driveways. Other areas of concern included Hawksworth Road, Hall Lane and Church Lane.

Message From HATC
Local Matters
Have you been consulted about the proposals to make Horsforth School an academy? Do you understand the implications? Academies are the government’s way of privatising our education system and taking it out of local democratic control. HATC believes that schools should be public services under direct local control, administered by people who know the local area. Most of all, we believe that profits should not be made from running state schools. Academies receive funding directly from the Government. The catch is that academies are not big enough to survive independently and are swallowed up by private ‘academy chains’ that offer services, at a profit. Profit comes at the expense of standards e.g. less experienced and non specialist teachers are employed to reduce costs. Academies are run by unelected governors. They are free to change the admissions policy, the school calendar etc, without accountability. Schools can become academies simply by a vote of the governors. Why should such a small group of people be allowed to decide the future of our schools? This is not a done deal. It can be prevented, but it needs you to act. Horsforth Against the Cuts (HATC), a resident’s group set up to oppose public service cuts and privatisation, is pressing ahead with its campaign against Horsforth School’s academy proposal. Hundreds of signatures have been collected on a petition calling for the school to set up a full consultation process and resident’s vote over the proposal, and this will be handed to the school on Saturday September 17th after a march and rally. HATC is calling for all those opposed to the privatisation of education, and for those seeking transparency & democracy around the proposal, to join the march, starting at the top of Town Street at 11:30 on 17/9/11. Although HATC has been encouraged both by the strength of feeling from local residents and by recent statements from governors confirming that no final decision has been made, the group says it will continue its campaign until its requests for local democracy are met. Horsforth in Bloom volunteers Alan Gray and Joan Relph picked up on our recent article about the state of boundary signs around Horsforth and have removed, repainted and replaced four signs in the area! Alan told us, “The refurbishment of these sign was something we wanted to do as a project and was brought forward as the judges of Horsforth in Bloom also commented upon the state of boundary signs”. In addition to Alan and Joan’s good work the boundary signs on Layton Lane and the Ring Road will soon have flowerbeds. As autumn approaches 3300 daffodil bulbs will be planted – spiraling costs have meant far fewer bulbs than the 5500 usually planted. The Probation Service has been asked to lend a hand through the Community Payback Scheme. Joan Relph scales dizzy heights to improve Horsforth’s signage

“Chris Barnham raises a number of issues with local councillors” raise public awareness. One way they do both is by holding as many as fifteen Race Nights each week in Yorkshire alone. One such night was on 15 August in The Fox and Hounds, Cookridge.
According to the charity Dementia Aware, only 20% of the over-50s in the UK have some knowledge about the subject of dementia - although almost one million people are suffering from it. The CSC Executive (Cars) getting trackside most publicised sufferers include Baroness Thatcher and Terry First, a DVD showing four races was drawn at random – with eight Pratchett. horses in each race and punters Dementia Aware not only raises being invited to bet in £1 units funds and provides support for (using the horse’s number rather sufferers and their carers, they also than any name). Then they’re
off – with a dryly humoured commentary dubbed onto a rather shaky recording. All part of the fun. With £1 stakes, and payouts determined on a tote basis after each race, there were no big winners or losers on the night. Not among the punters anyway. But generous local sponsorship of the event, including race-by-race, all added to the pot accumulated by Dementia Aware. Councillor Barry Anderson tackles parking issues at LBA In a slight diversion from the usual format, Barry Anderson kindly agreed to be interviewed by Covered about his constituents’ latest concerns about airport parking – and indeed the lack of it. Residents have been raising concerns with me about parking enforcement on the roads surrounding the airport. Residents as far from the airport as Pool in Wharfedale have complained about air passengers parking in their street and then using taxis as shuttles rather than pay the airport’s own parking charges. Others, either picking up or dropping off friends or family, have complained about the withdrawal of ten minutes’ grace in the £2 pick up/drop off point near the terminal building, the relocation
of the free parking area to a point way beyond walking distance, the removal of the disabled bays in front of the building and far stricter enforcement of parking restrictions. I raised the last point with Leeds City Council’s Parking Enforcement Team. It seems that more tickets are being issued because the airport is now licensed by LCC to issue tickets on its behalf. Two LBA staff were trained, given uniforms and also have an LCC civil enforcement officer in support. I have advised LCC of my constituents’ allegations that LBA was deliberately corralling them into paying areas by moving the pick up zone – and by failing to sign it properly. It appears that LCC was not aware of these changes at the time they licensed LBA to act on their behalf and are now keeping the matter under review. LBA is a most important resource to the Leeds business and residential communities. The parking restrictions on the

Horsforth, Rawdon and Cookridge Crimewatch
Local Matters
According to the West Yorkshire Police, crime in these areas is at its lowest in 20 years however the attempted Santander bank robbery in Horsforth suggests otherwise. Tuesday 16th August witnessed two masked and armed men try to enter the bank on Town Street where they failed and fled the scene. The men, reported to have being from Bramley have since been arrested. Since the beginning of January this year, Horsforth has recorded a total of 368 crimes committed, the majority being either burglaries or anti social behaviour. Latest results show that fifty four crimes were committed during the previous crime recording month. Fifteen of which were either attempted or successful burglaries with Back Lane being the target on multiple occasions. Other crimes include twenty counts of anti social behaviour, three vehicle crimes, three violent crimes and eighteen counts of crimes involving either shoplifting, drug use or criminal damage. Rawdon has had a total of 390 crimes recorded since the beginning of 2011, the vast majority of which were anti social behaviour. However, burglary rates are also thriving with eight reported in the latest month alone;three of which were all committed on North street. Five violent crimes and two vehicle crimes were also reported, with the remaining crimes again due to shoplifting, criminal damage or drug use. Cookridge, on the other hand, has had a rather vast number of crimes reported so far this year. With anti social behaviour, again, accounting for a significant number
of such crimes. Latest results from this area show that Beechwood Court and Gainsborough Drive were the main targets for criminals carrying out a burglary along with Holt farm rise attracting police attention on several occsasions. Each area revealed a pattern in crime rate increase during the month of April In which all schools and colleges were closed for the holidays which indicates a clear youth involvement in the overall total of crimes committed. The West Yorkshire Police have begun schemes to attempt to overcome such youth involvement and in an attempt to tackle anti social behaviour Local community and voluntary groups now have the chance to apply for up to ÂŁ2,500 worth of funding from the Police Departments Main Grant Round to assist with their projects and schemes.

Fostering dogs for West Yorkshire Dog Rescue Recent figures suggest that around 345 stray dogs are picked up every day and more than one in twenty are put down as they fail to find a home and shelters become increasingly crowded. West Yorkshire Dog Rescue are appealing for foster homes so that they can help more dogs. “Fostering dogs? I didn’t know that was possible!!” is the response people give when asked to help. To most people, a dog rescue means dogs in kennels behind bars looking miserable with limited opportunity for fun and exercise. There are many benefits for dogs and owners who foster. Dogs in family homes are happier compared to the stress of kennels. Some fosterers enjoy training dogs and find they improve with consistent handling and love. Give us a call to claim Dear Chris Congratulations on Covered magazine. I love all the local content, particularly Bob Horsforth's comments. I can't imagine the hornets' nests he must stir among Horsforth and Leeds Councillors. I certainly don't have his energy or persistence, but I'd like to beat my drum about the two parking bays a little down from Morrison's in Town Street. The two spaces nearest the centre, one in each bay, are both for disabled. But they are marked only only by small street signs. There is no disabled marking on the ground - the main reason why so many unwitting parkers receive tickets. Nor are there any lines showing their extent. People parking in the imaginary bays

Dear Bob and all at The Covered Magazine Group,
Dear Covered,
Thank you for all you are doing to improve Horsforth. It is good that someone cares about us. I wondered if you could do anything to stop people from dumping waste on Calverly Lane. This area has become an eyesore since the council shut the recycling site. It was bound to happen. Thank you for your help
We received Covered for the first time last month and enjoyed reading the articles. We used a plumber from the magazine and found him to be fantastic. We visited Bar 166 which was excellent. We’ve entered the competitions and hope to win. We look forward to the next one!

Dear Covered,
Dear Covered,
We on Stanhope Drive have a continuous problem with speeding vehicles, especially on an evening and during the early hours. I have already had one cat killed by a driver, who must have known he'd hit something, yet drove off to leave myself; who was in a pot at the time, and my daughter, to pick up our dead pet. I fear this will be a pedestrian next time.
We wish to draw to everyone’s attention to the fact that Horsforth School is proposing to become an academy on Jan 1 2012. The implications of this are huge, and yet how many people in Horsforth understand these implications or are even aware of the proposals?
I have mentioned this to our local MP and the local police - neither have done anything about this ongoing problem. The speed bumps that were provided on Stanhope Drive are no good as a car’s tyre’s fit either side of them. I would love to see this covered in 'Covered' magazine as it is driving others and myself to distraction. Yours sincerely AC, Horsforth.

Dear Covered, Thank you so much for all you are doing to improve Horsforth, I was starting to despair about anything ever being done for this area. It used to be such a well looked after Town. I look forward each month to "Bob's Bit" and follow his Blog daily, I am really pleased that someone has at last stood up for us against the faceless bureaucrats in Leeds. I am wondering if anything can be done about the number of cars parked on the footpath down Low Lane and Troy Road, I have to walk on the road some days as I cannot pass on the footpath. Keep up the good work everyone and thank you. J. Fox
The academies system is essentially the privatisation of state education and the removal of schools from local democratic control. It offers Horsforth School the prospect of being run, for profit, by private academy companies. We believe that such an important decision needs a full and open debate, involving the wider Horsforth community, and that no decision should be made without a vote of residents. Horsforth Against the Cuts (HATC) is a resident’s group set up to oppose public service cuts and privatisation, and we urge your readers to contact the school and local councillors to voice their concerns. Bridge to Kilimanjaro

What is it with some of our local women? Covered’s own life coach, Susan Harper Todd, is the only British woman ever to have scaled Everest and sailed the Atlantic – on different days, mind you. Now Horsforth’s Carol Keen has set her mind on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – not as steep, high or cold as Everest but, nonetheless, Africa’s highest. Carol’s journey started, unwittingly, back in 2006 when her mother, Eileen Cole, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Eileen was an infant teacher for 15 years at St Margaret’s Primary School until her retirement 27 years ago. She was also involved with the W.I in Horsforth and Horsforth St. Margaret’s Church.
The Bridge Inn did its part for Horsforth in Bloom. Their community spirit has extended into the autumn – with a special fundraising quiz night on 12 October. Parkinson’s UK is to be the beneficiary.

News from Horsforth Town Council Welcome to the mellow fruitfulness of Autumn! As always, HTC is indebted to the many volunteers who have given time, energies & resources to make events such as Hope in the Park as successful as they are. One of the ways in which HTC can assist such activities is through the good works of the Community (sub) Committee. They can award grants to any Horsforth organisation that requests support for any worthwhile community activity or project. These grants can be up to £500. By the way, members of that same Community Committee, and the Royal British Legion and the Ex-Service Peoples’ Associations are organising a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of HMS Aubrietia’s capture of the German Enigma code machine back in 1941.
Donations at the time from the good people of Horsforth had helped fund the very ship that seized this remarkably important piece of German intelligence. The Commemoration will take place on The Green, opposite the Museum, on Sunday 16th October at 3pm. There will be a service of rededication of the Commemoration Stone, led by Canon Rosemary Hayes and attended by the Lord Mayor of Leeds. Representatives of our Armed Forces, their veterans and, hopefully, veterans from HMS Aubrietia will also be in attendance. Best wishes, Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council
Fire Station Keeps it Cool
Cookridge Fire Station held their annual open day on Sunday 4 September. The displays and demonstrations included numerous fire and rescue appliances. The most spectacular was what NOT to do with a chip pan fire. This photograph was taken one half second after a teacup of water was added to one third of a panful of burning oil. The water, being denser, sinks before being vaporised into steam - and into as much as 2000 times its original volume.

Dog Control Consultation Residents are being asked for their views on proposals to extend powers to control dogs in public in the city. Leeds City Council introduced dog control orders on earlier this year, aimed at clamping down on nuisance or dangerous behaviour. They empower council staff to instruct people to put dogs on a lead in public anywhere in Leeds if they are causing a nuisance. Under the current orders dogs are also banned from play areas in some parks. Now the council wants to hear what people across the city think about a proposal that on certain land dogs should be on a lead at all times. This includes areas such as cemeteries and crematoria, as well as on all carriageways, adjacent footpaths and grass an online questionnaire to submit with your views. verges. A copy of the consultation documents and lists The council also wants to find out what views are identifying land that might be affected can be on the suggestion that the original order should be inspected at Leeds City Council’s Environmental widened to include school grounds, remembrance Services offices at Millshaw Parkway, Leeds, LS11 0LS. and wildlife gardens. Councillor Mark Dobson said: “These orders are aimed at controlling dog behaviour- particularly when they are acting dangerously- and we now want to know whether people would like us to take this further. For instance, when we have looked at this previously, it has been suggested that there are merits in keeping dogs on leads” A full list of land affected by the proposals can be found on the Leeds City Council website at www. leeds.gov.uk/dogs This is also where you can find
Hard copies of the survey can be requested via 0113 395 1765 or email a request to environmental. action@leeds.gov.uk. All responses need to be submitted by October 14th 2011 when the consultation will close. Aerial & Satellite Specialists

Leeds Students to Hit Record GCSE Figures Students from Horsforth School, Benton Park and Ralph Thoresby and other young people across Leeds will be celebrating their GCSE results with initial figures suggesting 2011 could be the city’s most successful year to date. Over 8,000 pupils in the city received their results at the end of August and although the full collection of results isn’t expected to be readily available until later this year, the early indications are that a record number will have achieved at least five A*-C grades. Are You Switched Over Yet?
Leeds is in the last of the five areas of Yorkshire being converted to digital TV. Whereas the other four were all rolled out by the end of August, the Emley Moor transmitter (serving most of Yorkshire) went part-digital on 7 September. BBC Two went over on that date, with BBC digital channels also being extended to reach all areas. All others follow on 21 September. For help and advice The Yorkshire Switchover Team visited Horsforth Town Street in August, offering advice and literature to all passers by. Those who have missed out can call the team on 08456 505050. They also advise how the over-75s and certain categories of disabled people might qualify for a flat £40 installation fee – and how entitlement to some income-related benefits can reduce that charge to zero.

Squire Hairdressing for Men
Sarah McDonnell joined Squire Hairdressing the very week it opened its doors – back in 1988 and at the height of New Romanticism. She had previously managed a salon in Ilkley. As a graduate of Bradford College (with 3 Distinctions) and runner-up in Yorkshire’s Hairdresser of the Year competition, she certainly had a lot to bring to the new salon. Having built up a loyal clientèle, Sarah bought the business outright in 1995 and is pictured (left of centre) with current stylists Brian, Alison and Ryan. “We offer a full range of styling and other services to a full range of customers – from children through to senior citizens.

Hofsforth CC Finish With a Flourish The 1XI finally found some consistency and went into the last game of the season on the back of three straight wins against Colton, Skipton and New Rover. Aussie import Adam Mabb and skipper Chris Binks have been leading the way with the bat, while Mabb, Mathew Bates and Andrew Robinson have continued to take wickets to ensure a comfortable mid-table finish for the side. Sadly Horsforth’s 2XI hit a patch of bad form at just the wrong time. Despite a second victory of the season over neighbours Hall Park, a series of poor results saw them slide perilously close to the relegation zone and needing a win in the last game to ensure survival. Finally, Horsforth’s 3rds continued their fine run. Frequently fielding as many as 10 junior players, losing just one game in

Hall Park Looking Yarnbury Ready Forward to 2012 and Raring to go Hall Park CC unfortunately suffered during a transitional stage for the club this season as they continually looked to mould the younger players at the club into the senior set-up. The improvement has been steady and if this scale of improvement continues then Hall Park are sure to have a fantastic future moving up the tables. The first XI will be looking to continue strengthening the side, attracting new players that have the same club orientated mindset whilst improving current players ahead of next season. The second XI suffered relegation to the third division this year but there were a lot of positives to take including the promising juniors that made the step up to the side. Under 17, Harry Stirk was the pick of the bowlers in the penultimate game of the season while Geoff Barker hit an impressive 96 not out in the same contest. Hall Park CC also remain in the process of finding a local company to partner with the club and its excellent facilities, any interested parties are encouraged to contact the club website. If you are interested in playing for a friendly and sociable club in 2010 contact the club for further details – webmaster@hallparkcc.org.uk or visit www.horsforthhallparkcc.org.uk - players of all abilities welcome. Yarnbury RFC first XV began their new season looking to build on their positions from the last campaign with a close fought 31-28 home victory over Roundhegains. The combative first XV got off to an impressive start and will be doing their utmost to continue winning ways when they travel to Goole and West Park Leeds, where the team lost 33-0 last season. The Brownberrie Lane club have a number of teams competing in respective leagues again for the forthcoming year with the Hornets XV kickingoff with two home matches against Ilkley and West Park Leeds, two sides that recorded victory over the Hornets last year. The Yarnbury ‘B’ XV face Basildon 2 away before welcoming Otliensians at home hoping that they can repeat a similar start as in the 2010/11 campaign, where they won their first 10 matches of the season including a memorable 92-7 away victory amongst the victories. The Veterans XV meanwhile head to Keighley and Crossleyans Vets for their opening matches before a run of three consecutive home matches. The Vets previously started strongly too, winning seven of their opening eight encounters.

Rawdon Old Boys - 5 Rawdon Old Boys - 1 Recently having extended Covered magazine’s catchment into Rawdon, we were delighted to be invited to a charity football match on 20 August at Hanson Field, Rawdon. The match was between Rawdon Old Boys (the Saturday League team) and Rawdon Old Boys Sunday AFC (you guessed – from the Sunday League). There are some local derby matches and there are others. None could be more local than this – though the scoreline wasn’t quite as close as the two changing rooms; five–one to the Saturday side. But the real winner on the day was The Stroke Association and one of their younger sufferers. Local bride-to-be Julie Elliott was fit, healthy and in her early thirties when, three years ago, an aneurism hospitalised her for months. Her discharge from hospital was but one early milestone on her continuing road to recovery. Fiancé James Campbell; “Isn’t it wonderful that the clubs didn’t hesitate to organise and play a fundraising match on behalf of both The Stroke Association and Julie’s own efforts to fund an arm support which will help her return to normality?”
It takes two to tango: Richard Ellison of Rawdon’s Sunday team gets to grips with Saturday counterpart Carl McCallum.
You can read more about Julie’s continuing trials and tribulations on juliesupdate.com. Whereas most blogs are generally regarded as egotistical selfindulgence, Julie’s is a free and frank account of how she coped, or didn’t, with an affliction more often Anticipated fundraising on the day was £500. That associated with victims twice her age. Informative had doubled by the end of August. reading for victims and their carers.

Iron Andy Completes Mammoth Triathlon
Ironman Andy Riddoch competes Photo: David Brett
Ironman Andy Riddoch of Horsforth Harriers running club has recently completed the ‘UK Ironman Triathlon’ at Bolton, finishing in 11hours 29minutes. Mr Riddoch is the first Harriers runner to complete the true Ironman test and clocked in 3hours and 19minutes marathon time after swimming 2.4miles and cycling an incredible 112 miles. Riddoch also finished in the top 25% of the field in what was an outstanding achievement. Harriers vet Ian Chappell has undertaken an extraordinary run, taking part in the 150mile Desert Gobi Challenge; the amazing feat saw him finish 3rd raising funds for the Yorkshire Air ambulance. Horsforth Harriers are holding a 10K race on September 25th from their base at the Woodhouse Park School, Apperley Bridge. The running club are welcoming entries to both affiliated and nonaffiliated runners who wish to compete and challenge themselves to the course. Entry to the race is just £10 for affiliated runners and £12 for those without a club while there is an additional £2 extra for on the day entries. The race fee includes a free race T-Shirt for all finishers. Entry forms can be downloaded on www. horsforthharriers.co.uk or enter online at www. ukresults.net

Victorious St Margaret’s in celebratory mood following a year of success.
St Margaret’s AFC
In the very first issue of Covered, we featured a short article on Horsforth St. Margaret’s Junior Football Club - formed 20 years ago and now growing year on year with more than 30 teams and 400 players. Teams range from “Dribblers” - free to join, training on a Sunday morning and aiming to get kids playing football from an early age. The club then has teams from Under 7s up to Under 18s level. St. Margaret’s has had great successes in League and Cup competitions right across the age groups and has grown from strength to strength. All the teams play on a Sunday and compete in several local leagues. In each issue of Covered we will feature part of the club and bring you news and views from that age group. This issue focuses on the Under 13s Boys. Three teams play in the Garforth League and Craven, Aire & Wharfe League – two of those teams won their respective divisions last season. All three sides are currently looking to build on that success and further strengthen the Under 13 age group. If you are interested in playing football, or know someone who is, then please get in touch. The teams train on Thursdays or Fridays and play home matches at King George’s Fields off Brownberrie Lane - so get on down there if you want to enjoy local football at grass roots level.
