Horsforth Matters

Local Matters

with Bob Horsforth A great big thank you to everyone who has taken the me to get in touch following last months arcle on Graffi across the Town. It is clear that this is a problem that concerns many people. This month we look at more An Social Behavior that effects everyone in Horsforth and that is the problem of illegal and thoughtless parking. Across the town cars are abandoned daily on grass verges and mounted on footpaths, somemes making it impossible for pedestrians to pass safely. This problem is clearly evidenced in the featured photos and can be seen day in, day out around Horsforth. We ask; why is the law not being enforced? Especially when the residents of Horsforth pay extra through the town council for community policing? Residents on Low Lane, Outwood Lane, Broadway and Hawksworth Road

have all been in-touch with their concerns. Neglected Roads The latest update on The top “Most neglected roads” is no change!. Broadgate Drive is sll at Number 1 for the third month in succession despite assurances from Leeds City Councillors that all potholes are fixed within 48 hrs of being reported... This is followed closely by the top of Batchelor Lane, Hall Lane and the Top of Town Street which is in danger of collapse! Expenses I’ll let you decide whether or not you feel our elected representaves are providing value for money. The latest figures available tell us that, of the 101 elected councilors in Leeds 93 claimed the full basic expense allowance of £14,707.86. Of the 8 that did not, most were

fraconally under the threshold. In our local area, our 3 councillors all claimed the full basic allowance with Brian Cleasby claiming an addional £4,769.82 and Chris Townsley claiming a whopping £8,943.66 in special responsibility allowances. Andy Barker did not claim any addional allowances and let’s hope that newly elected Dawn Collins connues this trend. There is more informaon on my blog relang to this maer, so please check it out and let me know what you think. Next month Horsforth Maers will be focusing on the growing problem of dangerous footpaths and asking why so much money is being wasted on compensaon payments instead of resolving the problem and fixing our streets? Also, the signs that greet people entering our town – should they be improved, or at least cleaned? They are looking prey red these days, let us know what you think.

Accidents Waiting To Happen?

Local Matters

New parking restricons introduced in the immediate vicinity of Horsforth train staon have always forced parking further and further up Tinshill Lane and Tinshill Road. Has the me now come to push it even further uphill? This is the lower end of Tinshill Lane one aernoon in May, between the juncons with Holly Drive (boom right) and Blackwood Gardens (le of centre). The white car waits for the black car to thread its way uphill - through cars parked opposite one another. In good daylight without ice, emerging or oncoming vehicles, lorries, refuse collecons, roadworks or emergency services (Cookridge Fire Staon is at the top of the hill). But what if? Should the recently extended yellow lines be extended even further? Should exisng residents or limited parking schemes be implemented further away from the staon, perhaps including more of the side roads? Let us know what you think and we’ll contact the local authories each month to help improve Cookridge.

ASB All areas have been patrolled, there have been a number of youths at the Cricket club but they have been playing football and not causing any problems. At the weekend a number of people were drinking in the road on Town Street that had to be moved back, but they were co operave. On the 20th PCSO

Dear Covered,

STAR LETTER £25 Give us a call to claim Praise for Bob! Dear Covered, As a resident who drives down Broadgate Drive every day may I thank Bob Horsforth for trying to get all the potholes fixed. I have wrien to the Council on 3 different occasions and nothing ever gets done! Nobody seems to be bothered; perhaps with your help and the changes at the recent local elecons we will see some acon! Bob, you are truly a “Horsfordian” Thank you for everything you are doing for us, and don’t let the bully boys silence you! Also, great Magazine, love the compeons. Cindy Cro Horsforth

I write in relaon to the inconsiderate/illegal parking on Brownberrie Lane outside Trinity and All Saints College. The Council laid double yellow lines along this stretch last year which, quite frankly, was a complete waste of me and taxpayers’ money. At the me of them laying the yellow lines there were a number of cars parked along this stretch of road and consequently they only laid the lines up to each batch of cars. This has resulted in there being gaps in between the lines which people from the college take advantage of to park. Furthermore, the lines are half missing due to the road being re-tarmaced because of potholes following the bad weather. This means that the law relang to illegal parking on double yellow lines would not be enforceable as the lines are incomplete. As this road is heavily used by traffic and is a main bus route, the potenal for accidents/traffic tailbacks is obvious and it is high me that the council addressed this issue. ..........................................................

Dear Covered, Car parking in Hall Lane near to the juncon with Fink Hill is becoming a serious problem for residents, pedestrians and traffic passing along Hall Lane. On a recent evening the parking close to the juncon was ridiculous - three cars across the pavement and road at one point leaving no space on the pavement and only a single passageway for cars to pass along the road, causing tailbacks along Hall lane and frustraon to local residents. It would have been impossible for a wheel chair to get through. The cause is events in St Margaret’s Hall which are becoming much more frequent, together with inadequate local parking areas. A few years ago double yellow line restricons were proposed on one side of Hall Lane for the first several hundred yards from the Fink Hill juncon – but no acon was taken. Why Not?? The problem seems to be ignored by the Police - never see an aempt to control the parking - even on the blind bend close to the juncon, which causes cars to back up if restricted to the one lane. Perhaps when these events are planned for St Margaret’s Hall a Police or traffic warden presence should be arranged to control the illegal parking on the pavements. A Hall Park Resident

Planning for a dream kitchen?

“It’s best to avoid fashion fads, but do invest in quality and work with the planner. Above all, go with what feels right for you – insnct, inspiraon and imaginaon are the secret ingredients in this recipe.”

What makes an aracve, funconal kitchen? Careful planning is the answer, according to Darren Sewell of Caldaire Kitchens. These days, kitchens aren’t just a room for cooking or eang in; they’re for socialising, homework, reading, chang, catching up with paperwork or simply hanging out. So how do you go about designing a kitchen that really works for you? Daren tells us how. “First, have a clear idea of what you need from a kitchen. Do some research; speak to friends and family to find out what works for them. Next, ask yourself these quesons: Who will use the room, how oen and how many at a me? How will it be used – for keen amateur gastronomy, regular family dinners or the occasional microwave meal? What about other acvies – homework, socialising, washing and ironing? Are you hooked on high-tech? What major appliances do you need? And what will you do with smaller gadgets, will you need storage for them or will they stand proudly on the worktops? How much storage will you need, and what type? Do you prefer solid doors to glass, or maybe lots of open shelving? Will you have non-fixed items such as a dresser. What about worktops – wood, stainless steel, granite, marble? And flooring – ceramic, stone, vinyl or laminate? The next step is to call in a professional, someone who can work with you to help plan the kitchen and will be able to tell which of your ideas will work and

which won’t”. With clear ideas and the pragmasm of a professional you can work toward the perfect kitchen. A good kitchen professional will take everything into account when designing your dream kitchen and the more input you can provide, the beer. Darren advises, “It’s best to avoid fashion fads, but do invest in quality and work with the planner. Above all, go with what feels right for you – insnct, inspiraon and imaginaon are the secret ingredients in this recipe.”

Horsforth Cricket Club The month of May saw Horsforth Cricket Club’s 1st team connue their promising start to the

season, going into the Spring Bank Holiday weekend nicely placed just behind the leaders in the Airedale-Wharfedale Division C. Australian overseas player Adam Mabb has made a good start to his Horsforth career, the highlight being his 5 wickets for 72 in our victory against Woodhouse. He has formed an effecve new ball partnership with fellow fast bowler and leading wicket-taker, Andrew Robinson. Andrew is also leading the way in bang

to date, scoring 178 runs at an average of nearly 30. Horsforth’s 2nd team has struggled due to injuries and players being unavailable but they have started to find some form and have won two of their last three games. Highest run scorer for the 2nds

is Chris Baker, who scored a magnificent 83 at Woodhouse, a game that saw all-rounder Mark Thomas mark his return to Horsforth, aer two seasons at Follifoot, with a quick-fire 60. Bowlers Nick Taylor, Mahew Wainwright & Pete Whincup lead the way in the wicket-taking stakes and with a more seled side, hopes are high that the 2nd team will quickly pull away from the foot of the table. The junior cricket season is now well under way and Horsforth, with teams ranging from Under

9 up to Under 17, are making good progress in cup and league. Horsforth v Hall Park Weekend Horsforth CC & Hall Park each claimed a victory in Saturday’s local derbies. Our closest rivals claimed victory in a low scoring 1st team game while Horsforth 2nds clinched a crushing win in the Park. Horsforth 1sts put in a disappoinng bang performance, with only Musgrave & Mabb (pictured) reaching double figures in a total of 83. Hall Park lost 5 wickets (Robinson 3-36) before sealing the win. By contrast, the 2nds posted a huge 280-9 in their innings with Welsh’s 62 being the highlight. Mahew Wainwright then led the way with a magnificent 6-15 as the hosts fell for just 120 all out. Aer two rather one-sided games on Saturday, the 3rd team game at HCC on Sunday was a much ghter affair. Horsforth reached 175-8 from their 40 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 9th wicket partnership of 78 between skipper Alex Lines and Paul Hands. Horsforth then had Hall Park struggling with 7 wickets down before a big stand for the 8th wicket saw the visitors home with a couple of overs to spare. Thanks to Chris Taylor

Yarnbury News

Raymond retires At the end of this year the Yarnbury President, Raymond Johnson, will be rering aer 30 years, perhaps making him the longest serving president of an English rugby club. The club organised a president’s match and presentaon on Saturday May 28th to recognise his achievements. Raymond has been a stalwart of the club for many years; he joined as a player in 1951, playing connuously unl he was 48; but played in his last game in 2003

aged 75. He was 1st XV captain for 8 years and played first team rugby unl he was 41 – always at full back. He was made Assistant Treasurer at the end of his first season at the club and has held office ever since including as Membership Secretary and Chairman of Rugby and was instrumental in seng up the first Colts team. Raymond has been the most diligent of ambassadors, always recruing, encouraging and being supporve of both senior and junior secons. He is at the club almost every day – it really is his second home. He has supported the club financially when mes

have been hard and he is ever present at matches and fundraising events, organising numerous luncheons and dinners. The commemorave match in Raymond’s honour saw no fewer than 80 players, past and present taking part including Raymond himself who took his familiar full back posion for 20 minutes! The current 1st XV took charge beang the president’s XV by 20 – 13.

We wish Raymond a long and happy rerement from the president’s role.

Horsforth Hall Park Cricket Club

The start of the season has had mixed fortunes for Hall Park, the first team are performing well and have moved in to 8th place in the league aer a recent away victory against Addingham and a 5pt winning draw against Alwoodley. This was followed by a first round Waddilove Cup win against Woodhouse. Top performances for the month came from Jonny Postle who took 6wkts at Addingham , Jamie Simpson stopped just short of a century with 99 against Alwoodley. Notable performances have also come from youngsters in the cup with

18-year-old Sam Dobson’s 1st X1 best of 91 and 15 year old Harry Srk taking 4 wkts on his club debut. Adding to this has been the excellent form of veteran Mark Scaife which sends the team into the tough upcoming fixtures with renewed confidence aer the early season setbacks. The 2XI at Horsforth Hall Park have had a difficult start to the season and are yet to register their first win of the 2011 campaign. Despite this, there have been posive signs coming out from recent matches against Pool and Woodhouse, including good performances from the junior players in the team. There have also been excellent performances from Geoff Barker, who has now reached 16 wickets for the season. Mark Pearson, Paul Stevenson and Neil Cowgill have all made half centuries. With two U16’s opening the bang and bowling, things are looking promising for the future. In the Bank Holiday derby between Hall Park and Horsforth CC each claimed a victory but the 3rd team game ended in disappointment as Horsforth beat Hall Park 175 – 8 from 40 overs. Looking to the future, the clubs are now expanding their junior

secon with the formaon of an U13 girls team. Training sessions will take place on Monday evenings from 6pm and full coaching will be provided. All coaches are CRB checked and ECB qualified. The club also provides coaching for juniors. U17, U15 and U11 teams who have a number of fixtures running up unl July. Training sessions also take place at the Hall Park Cricket Club on a Monday evening from 6pm. For any further informaon contact the club on: 0113 2586859 or: Email: hallparkcc@yahoo.co.uk. Alternavely visit our new website at www.horsforthhallparkcc.org. uk for all the latest cricket and events news. The club can also be hired for funcons, for more informaon contact Trevor on: 07715 758878.

Marathon Runs For Horsforth Harriers Four Horsforth Harriers were fortunate enough to obtain places to make the trip to the capital for this year’s Virgin London Marathon. Steve Raby lead the way, just failing to crack the three hour barrier by five seconds and subsequently regreng his decision to pause briefly en route to pose for a photograph! Lindsey Clegg also ran impressively (3:27:52) and the other Horsforth runners were Bev Hurst and Simon Rudsdale, both finishing in a touch over four hours. Not gaining entry to London didn’t prevent other Harriers from compeng in a marathon. Tim Midgely ran a sparkling 2:42 at the Windermere Marathon to finish third overall and Vicky Ward and Graham Dawson also completed the Lakeland Marathon. Further afield, Helen Barber ran 3:16 and Jill Hobson set a new PB of 3:53 at the Edinburgh Marathon. Traveling furthest of all Steve Wood was the lone Horsforth Harrier in the Milan Marathon. Locally, a bumper entry of 32 Horsforth Harriers completed the recent Leeds Half Marathon and sll managed to find a team to handle the marshalling dues on the Ring Road at Woodside. Horsforth Harriers meet at 7.00 pm for training every Tuesday evening at Horsforth Hall Park Cricket Pavilion. Generate your own Electricity and Make Money! Micro-generaon is fast becoming a buzz word. With the cost of energy and concern for the environment mounng, people are now looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprint and ulmately, save money. Small scale power generaon designed to provide power for a family home or small business is one answer. The Government recently introduced ‘Feed-in Tariffs’ (FITs), a Clean Energy Cash Back scheme to provide an incenve. Under the scheme, energy suppliers pay householders who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or wind turbines. The scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated by the system, as well as a separate payment for electricity exported to the naonal grid. The payments are index-linked, tax-free and guaranteed for 25 years.

Sounds like a win-win situaon! Once the system is installed there will be a reducon in your electricity bills, in addion to the income from your Feed-in Tariffs. Daniel Lang of Electrotect UK Ltd., who

“This scheme has made micro-generaon accessible to a wider range of people”. specialise in solar energy installaons, advises people on how to apply for the FITs scheme and the expected rate of financial return. Danny told us “This scheme has made microgeneraon accessible to a wider range of people. We use the latest technology which is guaranteed for 25 years – giving you plenty of me to not only recoup your investment, but also make money and add value to your home. Installaon causes lile disrupon and can be up and running well within a week.” For more informaon, or a free energy consultaon, contact Electrotect on 01274 816782, or email sales@electrotect.co.uk
