A Letter From The Editor He’s on his way! Yes, Santa has the Elves working overtime and he’s packing up his sleigh ready for this year’s delivery run. Bustling high streets, packed supermarkets, heaving pubs and restaurants – we’ve got it all to look forward to! So, it’s goodbye 2011. The year bought with it confirmation that the world is economically unstable and the affect for local businesses is easy to see, with many closing down or losing staff. Some brave local entrepreneurs have taken the bull by the horns and launched a new business in 2011 – most are fairing well. Good luck to all who have taken the plunge, I’m sure Covered readers will continue to support you by shopping locally and using local services, it’s one of the best ways to help our communities flourish in 2012. Thanks go to our many readers and to our advertisers, colleagues and contributors for your support during 2011. Wishing you all a Happy Christmas & New Year - eat, drink and be merry! New Footpaths for Horsforth. The “Friends of Hunger Hills” Group has been successful in obtaining funding from the Horsforth Town Council to the value of £20,000 which has been contributed towards the cost of building new pathways around this popular beauty spot. This long awaited improvement will encourage more people to visit the amenity and mean the end to muddy feet for ramblers! Horsforth Roundabout Following the recent addition of lane markings to the roundabout on the A65 a resident was prompted to write “I think it’s quiet an achievement that they have made it even worse then it was before! With queues now stretching as far as Owlcoates in one direction and the Woodside roundabout in another each morning. Causing even more chaos for commuters and visitors to the Town. Stuart Andrew MP
I was thrilled to have been invited to contribute a monthly column to this magazine and welcome the opportunity to keep residents of my constituency informed of important changes which are taking place in Parliament and in our local area. As a Leeds MP I think it is vital that I make sure that my constituents views are heard in Parliament and local issues are raised as often as possible in the House of Commons. I am currently heading up the Westminster side of the campaign to save Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Unit in addition to championing High Speed 2 which would transform our transport system and greatly benefit Leeds and Yorkshire.
Over the coming year the Government will face some very tough challenges and I hope to be able to represent my constituent’s views in Parliamentary debates on key issues, such as the recent debate on whether or not the UK should have a referendum on EU membership. I am always available for constituents to contact and share their views and opinions and hold regular surgeries in the constituency which are open to all. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of my constituents a wonderful festive season and a happy new year and I look forward to keeping you all up to date in 2012.

Leeds City Council Meets With Covered Magazine – Part III
Local Matters
This month we bring you the final instalment of Covered’s meeting at Civic Hall with Leeds City Council representatives, which took place earlier this year. We welcome ongoing good relations with LCC and look forward to reporting further meetings in 2012.
Q:
Green Bins: Why are these emptied monthly? It seems beyond reason when we are encouraged to recycle so much waste yet residents are not given help in doing so. The problem has only been made worse by the closure of Calverley Lane waste recycling site.
A:
We already have fortnightly green bin collections on a trial basis in some areas of Leeds. Unfortunately we simply do not have the budget at the moment to extend this trial to other areas. This is because even though recycling would increase, the saving in landfill tax would not cover the cost of the extra service. Fortnightly collections would need a significant injection of cash at a time when we are having massive cuts to our budget, or would require a decision to reduce the weekly black bin collections to fortnightly. The Calverley Bridge site was closed after a detailed assessment found it to be unsuitable for redevelopment. There are still a number of recycling sites available within the area, including those at Milner’s Road, Yeadon, Ellar Ghyll, Otley, Grangefield Road, Pudsey and Kirkstall Road, Kirkstall. There are also 430 sites across the city where items such as bottles, old clothes and newspapers can be brought for recycling.
Q:
Hall Park is a fantastic asset for the Horsforth area – relatively trouble free and well kept. We have had a few letters from readers who are dismayed at the state of the toilets there. This is a small problem easily rectified by including lighting, toilet roll, hand towels and by cleaning regularly. These are the only (to my knowledge) public toilets in an area of 22,000 + people!

lighting. We are working closely with the ‘Friends of Hall Park’ who are very supportive and are raising funds to help us refurbish the toilets Horsfirth Academy Proposal: Many people in Horsforth, including those with kids at Horsforth Q: School, are unaware of what is happening and why?
Consultation has not been widespread – I have never received anything from the school, or council in regard to changes there. The school and form it takes is relevant to every resident of Horsforth, particularly those who may send their children there now or in the future. Should the consultation process be more inclusive? Would the council take a role in actively encouraging that?
We want to ensure that schools across Leeds meet the specific needs of each of our children A: and young people and that local communities are
given the opportunity to have their say on any proposals in their area.
Local authorities have no control over the level of consultation a school’s governing body carries out when proposing to become an academy. We also have no statutory duty in advising governing bodies on becoming an academy, but we would be willing to The condition of the public toilets in Horsforth do so if invited. Schools get their advice directly from Hall Park is an issue we are aware of and one the Government. we are actively seeking to resolve. The toilets are opened from dawn until dusk every day and cleaned However as this issue is raising concern in across the city, Leeds City Council is during the week. However, they have suffered from communities currently taking legal advice as to what is considered vandalism and this has resulted in them being closed to be a reasonable level of consultation which must for periods of time for repair. The current issue is that be carried out before a decision can be made by the the electrics have been damaged hence the poor schools’ governing bodies.

Brownies Among Cookridge Methodist Church Book Sale the Fundraisers
Cookridge Methodist Church’s quarterly book sales aren’t just three hours of activity on the day. Church regulars and book sale volunteer organisers sort and price donations throughout the intervening months (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
These four leaders from 13th Horsforth (St Margaret’s) Brownies were among numerous fundraisers at St Margaret’s Church Hall on 12 November. The main beneficiary of the event was the maintenance fund for the church itself, with Canon Rosemarie Hayes doing her bit by helping out on the stalls. St Margaret’s Church next fundraising event in the hall is on 9 June.
Like all self-financing churches, Cookridge Methodist Church, on the corner of Otley Old Road and Tinshill Road, is forever looking to raise funds to maintain the building. Their latest ambition is to replace their 25 years old induction loop hearing system – wireless amplification for hearing aid wearers. Their quarterly book sale on Saturday 26 November was a step in that direction.
13th Horsforth Brownies meet on Thursdays between 6.30 and 8pm. Tel: 0113 2587701
Their next book sales are on 4 February and 28 April, both from 10am to 1pm. The April sale will include plants.

Mercury Movie Makers The first amateur cine club in Britain was formed in 1923 at Cambridge University. Another 200 quickly sprang up, though it remained the preserve of the wealthy until after WWII, when advances were made with the relatively inexpensive 8mm cine film format. In 1958 a group of enthusiasts met on an adult education course in Menston. They went on to form Mercury Movie Makers – devoted to promoting amateur cinematography in the area but choosing a name unassociated with any location. Fifty years on and the club is now forty strong, meeting on Wednesday evenings at Rawdon and Guiseley Conservative Club. You only have to glance

Pupils from Horsforth School helped members of the Royal British Legion place crosses on each of the 28 war graves in Horsforth Cemetery (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
Horsforth School Remembers the Fallen
On Armistice Day itself, pupils from Horsforth School helped the Royal British Legion remember the 28 fallen servicemen buried in Horsforth Cemetery. Leader of Horsforth Council, Jude Arbuckle, read the dedication beside the war grave of Second Lieutenant Clarence James Ford (RAF), son of Reverend John and Mrs Ann Ford of Carlton Cottage, Horsforth. Clarence Ford died in May 1918, aged 18. At the foot of his grave there is a dedication to his brother Charles Henry Ford (15th West Yorkshire Regiment, The Leeds Pals). Charles was killed in action in October 1916, aged 21, towards the end of the Somme offensive. His is buried in the Military Cemetery in the village of Sailly au Bois, northern France.
Rawdon Remembers
Around sixty people attended the service of remembrance at Rawdon War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday. Official wreaths were laid by or on behalf of (L-R) St Peter’s Church, West Yorkshire Police, Rawdon and Guiseley Conservative Association, Lord Mayor and the City of Leeds and Stuart Andrews MP.

Ribbons Raise Awareness You may have noticed a number of trees in the area wrapped in white ribbons, or tape. The citywide project is part of a sixteen day international campaign to end violence against women. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Rev Alan Taylor joined Leeds City Council chief executive Tom Riordan and men from across Leeds in Park Square to launch the campaign. Leeds City Council’s domestic violence team is coordinating the project to wrap trees in white ribbon to encourage men across the city to show their support for the campaign and pledge they will not commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. Each year across the UK, three million women experience violence, and there are many more living with the legacies of past abuse. On average, two women in England and Wales are killed every week by a current or former male partner. This campaign will raise awareness locally and internationally about the issue and get men to commit their support for the campaign.

Message from Horsforth Town Council
Horsforth began Christmas celebrations on 3 December with a visit from a very important person. At 3.30pm the choirs of the Froebelian School and St Mary’s Primary met at The Green to sing carols to the music of the Horsforth Leeds City Band - and to welcome Father Christmas. We hope that everyone enjoyed what has become an annual event. Other special events will include the Christmas play “Give It Back Mak” in St Margaret’s Hall on 19 December, while Horsforth Churches Together reminds us of the many services during this time of celebration. The Council continues its day to day work. The growth of Council business has many local benefits. Hopefully, later this year, the Council will be able to apply for Quality Status. This will mean that the Council can ask LCC to take on more areas of responsibility. The Council intends to advertise for an additional member of staff to meet these growing demands and to help develop the Council Website, along with Horsforth Matters and other future projects.
Singing from the same hymn sheet though not necessarily sharing one – Lord Mayor of Leeds with Jude Arbuckle at The Green on Saturday 3 December
The Council has begun Horsforth’s preparations to celebrate next year’s Diamond Jubilee. If any residents or local organisations have any ideas or would like to work with the Council group to prepare events, then please contact the Town Clerk on 0113 2580988 or email horsforth.horsforth@vigin.net. Latest News from Councillor Chris Townsley Elsewhere in this issue you’ll find a letter from a reader congratulating Covered and its contributors for galvanising Councillor Townsley into action. Free speech and all that. But the latest news from Councillor Townley’s LibDem support office suggest that the good councillor has been far from dormant in the past few month... Network Rail – Horsforth Station NR wants to buy a piece of green belt land from Leeds City Council in order to construct a siding that will enable extra trains to run during peak hours. While it is commendable that NR should be addressing the demand for better links, I am disappointed that they seem not to have considered the knock-on effects. I share Covered’s view that parking congestion, and in turn traffic, is bad enough as it stands. But with these extra trains? I’ve asked council officers to look elsewhere for this siding - preferably at Woodside, where there are plans to build a new railway station to cater for the new development in Weetwood Ward.
Bob Horsforth – The Lone Ranger I invited The Lone Ranger to attend a meeting with Tom Riordan, Chief Executive of Leeds City Council, to discuss some of his concerns about parking. No show – not even an acknowledgement. What a pity. Had he attended then his crusade pieces may have become a little better informed. Anyway, and to set the record straight; the car bays on Low Lane and Troy for which he claims credit were a part of a highways plan conceived by the city council over two years ago. They were to help manage the parking problems around Horsforth Station. In future, I do hope that ‘Bob’ will only be claiming credit where it’s due. Or maybe he’ll accept any future invitation to meet with LCC? Conservation the key Councillor Brian Cleasby and I worked together to help create the new Cragg Hill/Woodside conservation area. We were delighted that LCC backed our opposition to the argument from the present tenants of the old spinning mill - that it be excluded. I can only guess their motives behind those representations but, fortunately, LCC supported our argument that the building is indeed a significant local landmark.

Happy Christmas
Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward
Local Matters
I would like to wish all the readers of Covered a very Happy and Healthy Christmas and New Year - and thank the magazine and its readers for their continuing interest in local council issues.
On top of the refranchising process, Leeds Metro will also be consulting on their next Metro Railplan. They will be looking at the need to update the service frequency across the whole of West Yorkshire, including the Harrogate line. They are mindful of the On the subject of a Happy New Year, perhaps you fact that, whereas Sundays are the busiest days for would like to know about my latest discussions with some Inter-City operators, local services don't always Leeds Metro on the question of an improved service match up. Better local services, particularly on a line on the Harrogate line - notably between Horsforth such as Harrogate, would therefore increase demand and Leeds and York. My approach was prompted by across the network - though they have expressed representations from residents. their need to make any additions or revisions financially sustainable. Whereas Leeds Metro admitted that they did not revisit the question of an improved service during I'll keep you posted. 2011 they informed me, encouragingly, that they will be doing just that in the next few months as part of the re-franchising process for Northern Rail. And, Cllr. Barry Anderson whereas previous studies have focused on weekday Adel & Wharfedale Ward www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com services, this one will include weekend demand.
Leeds CC’s Uncharitable Attitude to Parking
In past issues, and face to face with Leeds CC Chief Executive Tom Riordan, Covered has questioned the uncharitable attitude of Leeds CC towards errant parking, particularly when there is a popular charity fundraising event in the immediate vicinity. On this occasion there was a church fundraising event in St Margaret’s Church Hall, Horsforth – the car park opposite was full. This driver’s sin had been to park on a cobbled raised area. Not in anyone’s way. Not even the clearly displayed valid disabled person’s (blue) badge tilted LCC’s discretion on this occasion. Perhaps they thought that the fixed penalty might be found from the mobility component of any Disability Living Allowance in payment (lower rate around £20 per week, higher around £50)? ‘Tis the season to be jolly…

Give Covered a call to claim Dear Covered, Super little magazine – thank you. Although I’d like to see more news about the Yeadon area as that’s where I live. Maybe you’ve already heard but there is a cull underway at Yeadon Tarn, apparently the geese there are a hazard to planes. We’ve not had an incident yet and the geese have lived happily there for years. I’m sure most airports use bird scarers and I wonder why they can’t be used at LBA? Failing that, get some of the layabouts skulking round the high street to run up and down the runway waving their arms about. Exercise for the layabouts, no geese for the airport and a nicer high street for me! P. G. Windmill Lane, Yeadon Editor’s Note - Thanks P.G. Hopefully you’ll find more from your area this month. Although Covered are active in the community we do need readers, clubs and societies to let us know when and what’s happening. If you’re on the ball with events in Yeadon – get in touch, we’d love to hear from you! Dear Covered Magazine,
It is clear that your campaign is finally getting some results for Horsforth and out of the woodwork come our sleepy Councillors to take the credit! Since your magazine was first launched and with "Bob Horsforth’s" help there has been a huge amount of improvement around the town, graffiti is being removed, pavements resurfaced and even potholes that have stood un-filled for years are being repaired. It is a great result and one that many of us are grateful for. Thank you Covered and Bob. We know who really is responsible! Stuart P Simms
Dear Covered, I live at St James Terrace and have spoken to our councillors about installing traffic calming measures on Low Lane, as far as I am concerned it is the most dangerous road in beautiful Horsforth. My wife finds it really difficult to cross over Low Lane to the shop - the parking is outrageous 90% of the cars that are parked up my street are on the pavement, all are breaking the law. The pavements are a nightmare for mums with prams. I went to see our ward councillors last Monday night regarding the site next to the Vauxhall garage on Low Lane there is a rumour that it is going to be a Lidl supermarket. Can you imagine what that will do to an already overstretched infrastructure? We already have a Morrisons and two Tescos why more?
Having just read the latest edition of your wonderful magazine I was amazed to see that Peter Green

Dear Covered,
about changing the way the street looks with little regard to how other people might feel, the Having just read ‘Bob's Bit’ I would like to thank verges are reduced, front gardens disappear you for addressing the car parking situation in and some properties look like second hand car Horsforth! lots. However, no matter what happens Horsforth Kate Siddall will still be one big car park. Until Horsforth train station is moved to a more suitable position (Old Briggs Quarry?) this will continue to be a concern for residents. Praise for Cllr Townsley I would also like to address a more pressing parking concern. Horsforth has become one big taxi rank - everywhere you go you see taxi's parking all over the streets waiting for fares. Broadgate Lane is one of the hot spots for parking up, Hall Park parking area is another unofficial taxi rank. I cycle to work on a morning and see taxis parked up with the engines running and the drivers fast asleep. This is not very good for air pollution in Horsforth. I have spoken to Leeds City Council Taxi Enforcement Officers on many occasions and all they say that they will speak to the companies and move them on but they never do. Good old fashioned lip service!! I always thought that if a taxi did not have a fare they had to go back to a yard.
Dear Covered,
T. Parker
Yours sincerely, A grateful resident
I was sorry to hear that Cllr Townsley is not appreciated by all. I wrote about uncleared drains to the council in August, reminded them much later, and still nothing got done. I dropped a note into Cllr Townsley and ‘Hey Presto’ it was done within the week!! Regarding Humps and Bumps (Covered Ed 9), we have them, but drivers still drive fast. Unless the law is enforced we might as well not waste our time and money.
Dear Covered, I follow Bob’s campaign in Covered and am glad that he is working so well for the folks of Praise for Bob! Horsforth. Dear Bob I have lived in the Victoria’s for some 40 years, first in the Gardens and now in the Walk and I have felt compelled to write to you for some am concerned about the criminal damage months regarding the articles that you write being done to the grass verges, the trees on in Covered Magazine and work that you do them, and to pavements. This is caused by around Horsforth. vehicles parking illegally on them and builders using them as a materials store. You are a credit to everyone living the area and I wanted to thank you for all the work I am also concerned that the amount of legal personally that you have done and are still campaigning on street parking is being reduced by people chopping off parts of the grass verges outside for. I feel very passionate about the area in their own garden to make it easier for them to which I live and if there is anything I can do to access their own drives. This has the effect of help improve this please get in touch, I will do reducing the parking area in front of properties anything I can. and where previously there has been room to park two vehicles, this space is reduced so that Credit to you and everyone that helps you in only one vehicle can park. your tremendous work! Taking the Stress out of Xmas...
Local Ladies
Christmas is a wonderful time of being with friends and family, of enjoying ourselves and relaxing. Well, it should be relaxing, but for many of us it is just the opposite – downright stressful! That is usually because we try so hard to make this a happy time for everyone that we try to do everything ourselves, knowing that otherwise it won’t get done or it won’t be done properly. So we have no time for ourselves, become tired, stressed and just don’t enjoy what should be a fun, happy occasion! The answer is to learn to let go, to delegate and not to mind if things aren’t exactly as we want them to be. Learn the word “No”! Don’t be afraid to say No when you get asked to Xmas events you don’t want to go to. Not going means you could have that time to yourself instead. Delegate. Give everyone in the house a job to do to help prepare the Xmas meal,
clean the house or whatever needs doing. It might not be done to your perfect standards but at least you haven’t had to do it yourself! Happy Christmas!

A Brilliant Treat for Tired Feet
It’s not often Australian soap stars visit Horsforth, in fact, Michael Beckley who plays Rhys Sutherland in Aussie drama Home & Away may well be the first. After such a long journey, and with aching feet, Michael headed for newly opened Fishy Foot Spa on Town Street for some fishy foot therapy! What is a Fish pedicure? A natural pedicure method using Garra Rufa fish that gently suck at dry skin revealing silky soft feet. It is claimed that this unique experience helps to stimulate circulation and acupuncture centres easing stress and creating a feeling of wellbeing. It’s a great pampering experience and even more fun with friends. You’ll definitely get the giggles! Is it safe? Yes! These toothless Garra Rufa fish cannot transfer diseases and have been used in the far east for hundreds of years. You will have your own individual water pod and fish for the duration of your treatment and powerful water filtration and circulation systems with extra U.V. sterilisation ensures the upmost hygienic conditions. Does it hurt? No! These little finned therapists couldn’t hurt you even if they wanted to - they don’t have any teeth! What does it feel like? The treatment is tickly to begin with but this feeling soon settles down to a tingling sensation. Like Michael, you can expect to leave Fishy Footspa feeling pampered and fabulous!
Fishy Foot Spa is open now. Appointments not always necessary. Private pampering sessions for up to 10 people available by appointment. Open 7 days. Fishy Foot Spa, 100 Town Street, Horsforth, LS18 4AP. Tel: 0113 345 8969 E: info@ fishy-footspa.com

Diligent Fitness As we roll towards to start of another New Year, many of us make a list of positive changes we’d like to make to our lives. Weight loss tops the list for many. If you could find a way to lose weight without facing months of strict dieting you’d be interested, right? Kieran Igwe of Diligent Fitness gives us 4 of his tips. 4 tips for losing weight without dieting It's a fact that dieting works for weight loss... for as long as you can stay motivated. Problem is motivation isn’t constant. And you can only deprive yourself for so long, right? So I’d like to offer you an alternative approach to losing weight; without dieting. That way you'll keep the pounds off for good! Work on one thing at a time Most people struggle when they try to overhaul their whole lifestyle at once. Instead, focus on improving one thing at a time. In the meantime leave everything else the same. Focus on adding Avoid the deprivation that comes with cutting things out and focus on adding what’s missing. Do you eat 5 servings of veg each day? Are you exercising daily? Do you drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water? If not focus on adding all these things until you’re up to scratch.
Make it do-able For example, if you’re adding exercise into your routine start off small. Think you'd struggle to get 30 minutes a day? How about 10? Keep shrinking the challenge until you've found something you're 100% confident you can do every day. Keep track Once you’ve chosen one thing you’re going to add, use a tick chart to track how well you’ve stuck to your plan each day. Once you’ve managed two weeks straight, congratulations! You’re ready to start working on the next thing. Kieran Igwe is owner of diligent fitness and creator of the 12in12 weight loss programme. You can find out more about the 12in12 programme at www.12in12weeks.co.uk or give Kieran a call on 01132 577 286

Aireborough G&S Society Raises the Curtain – and Eyebrows - in Yeadon The Airborough Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s latest production, Princess Ida, has already raised eyebrows among some purists – in collaboration with director Anita Adams (pictured), their version of the opera is set in a 1960s holiday camp. A musical Hi de Hi! if you like. Mind you, WS Gilbert’s words to the opera are themselves a farcical take on Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem The Princess. What goes around comes around, as they say.
Yeadon’s Biggest Pothole?
Local Matters
We think this crater in the road may qualify as Yeadon’s biggest pothole. This whopper is on Ivegate – an area that is no stranger to road works. Taking up the majority of that section of road the pothole has compromised the yellow markings and has no doubt caused many drivers to judder as their pride and joy rattles over the holes. That’s if they haven’t swerved to avoid hitting it.
The purpose of the society’s coffee morning in Yeadon Methodist Church Hall on 12 November was to raise both funds and awareness for their production, running from 7 to 11 February at Yeadon Town Hall. They are also on the lookout for props - any holiday camp memorabilia from the period. The “hilarious nights of fun” (and one afternoon) run from 7 to 11 February at Yeadon Town Hall and are in support of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Yeadon 2012 Calendar for Charity
One of several charities benefiting at a recent Yeadon Liberal Club table sale was Sands, dedicated to supporting the families of stillborn children and neonatal deaths. Jane Tesseyman (pictured); “We lost a nephew – the support Sands gave helped pull us through. (Husband) Andrew and I do a lot of fundraising work. With a lot of help we have produced a calendar for 2012, each month featuring a view of Yeadon. At least £2.50 from each sold (£4.95) will be going directly to Sands. And Jet2 has kindly donated the chance for each purchaser to win a pair of summer flights from LBA. “We hope to do the same in 2013, though this time raising funds for a Yeadon charity. So, we’d appreciate suggestions and offers of sponsorship - and the donation of high quality images taken in the moths in question”.

2SEETV has been in the surveillance camera business for nine years. During those nine years, the speed and quality of image (and sound) recording have improved dramatically. Technological breakthroughs and international competition have also made prices accessible to most household budgets. Owner Alastair Babington is pictured with, for example, a standard DIY home (or workplace) surveillance kit. Four cameras with LED lights good for 15 metres, transformer, cables and recorder. More than adequate, say, for front and rear gardens and doorways. With after-sales support from both 2SEETV and the manufacturer. All for a little under £300. Also pictured, more at the 007 end of surveillance equipment, are an underwater camera, portable recorder and tiniest of cameras (next to the key ring). Although the underwater camera is often used for “fun” applications such as domestic fish ponds, it is also used by water authorities and others to monitor clarity (and therefore likely purity) of their
supplies. And all, again, within the grasp of modest domestic budgets. “Nearly all of our new customers turn up immediately following a burglary or break-in. Ian Dawes, owner of Subway, Guiseley is asking for local artists to play live in store at weekends. Ian told us, “We hope to entertain our customers with some amazing local music. All styles of music are welcome but we cannot accommodate full bands or orchestras. The slots available are between one to three hours. In return for their efforts each musician will receive their lunch for free. Additionally, artists may sell their own CD’s or market their forthcoming events. They will also be encouraged to collect donations for a charity of their choice. Subway Guiseley are big supporters of local charities and community events. “We hope this event will be great fun for those taking part and will put a smile on the faces of our customers. We would encourage family, friends and the public to come down and support live music and raise funds for local charities” added Ian.
Mike Chitty talks to Trinity Business Network (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
Anyone wishing to take part should contact Ian Dawes on 01943878893 or email ian@totallyfresh. net. Artists wishing to play in-store should be able to provide an mp3 or CD of their music beforehand.
The first part of Mike’s talk was about the three core areas within business – the product, its marketing and budgetary control. Arguing that precious few small businesses or sole traders excelled at all three, Mike then went on to explain how Elsie went about helping small businesses identify any weaknesses and then potential remedies. The next meeting will be an informal evening gathering at Medusa Bar, Town Street, Horsforth on 15 December. Enquiries from local businesses wishing to become involved to Jess Sewter, Trinity’s Employer Partnership Manager on j.sewter@ leedstrinity.ac.uk or 0113 2837182.

Archery in Adel
Founded in 1948 and with around 50 members drawn from all over the north Leeds area, Bowmen of Adel is one of the senior archery clubs in Yorkshire. Although the competition season is during the summer months, the club meets year-round on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Sunday afternoons. Indoor practice sessions are on shorter 20 yard targets. During winter, weather and light permitting, outdoor shoots are over 50 or 60 yards – only in the summer months do they shoot at the full 100 yards.

The club hosts a number of internal and open tournaments – and also enters two teams of three in the national postal league (competing against another 150 clubs).

Feeble Fairweather Must Stay Strong
Leeds City Juniors
Horsforth Fairweather had a month to forget with a string of heavy defeats which have hammered the confidence and morale of the squad and stalwart manager Martin Woods. Fairweather suffered defeat to Bradford outfit Mill Lane in the County Cup, HT Sports in the Sanford Cup and JB Celtic in the league fixture. The three consecutive matches saw Horsforth concede an incredible 23 goals and scored just two including a horrific 10-0 mauling from HT Sports on Remembrance Sunday. Woods’ side did manage a saving grace 3-1 victory at home to South Leeds United to salvage something from what was a catastrophic month. Veteran John Newsome notched his 74th goal for Fairweather while Richard Horton and Dean Herron were also on the score-sheet in the win. The Greens will be confident of a successful December however as they face two sides below them in the league before facing current leaders Young Guns in the last match before Christmas and New Year. Horsforth will be aiming for a minimum of two wins out of three as they look to finished 2011 off on a high before starting the New Year fresh. Follow Fairweather’s form via their website www.hffc.co.uk
In their first season Leeds City Juniors and Leeds City Colts under-11s side have made impressive starts, the Juniors are flying in Division 1 while Colts are 2nd in their division with six wins in six! The Colts have been in magnificent form with their 100% league record while the Juniors have won three and drawn twice in the opening six games.
Managers Tony Bailey and Rob Elton both commented on the fantastic experience of managing the boys and watching them progress week on week gives great satisfaction. Leeds City Juniors are always on the lookout for new players to add to their current squad. If you are interested in joining an ambitious club please contact Tony on 07711 347 674 for further information. In other news, Leeds City Juniors under-13s are looking to take part in a football tournament in Europe in 2013. The tournament would be an exciting opportunity for the young lads to test themselves against European opponents and promote the City of Leeds. Several fund raising ventures are planned and any sponsorship from local businesses would be welcomed by the team. Please contact darrenneedham@leedscityjuniors.org

Old Mods Desperate for a Win Old Modernians 1XV suffered another tough month as they fell to three consecutive losses including a closely fought 19-17 defeat to the hands of Bramley Phoenix. The Old Mods are currently 13th in the Yorkshire Division Three and face bottom club Halifax Vandals away from home, a match which is sure to be on tenterhooks for the entire 80 minutes. The fixture comes at a time when Mods are struggling, having lost four matches on the bounce.

The Cookridge based side also play league leaders Roundhegians at home before ending the year with a trip to 10th place Thornensians, hoping that former Leeds Rhino Damien Gibson can help them pick up some much needed points. The former Rhino’s man did grab his maiden try for the club in the last month however the result didn’t go their way as Bramley Phoenix finished as victors by just two points. The Old Modernians will be hoping to turn around their fortunes in Decemeber and kick the month off with a win over basement side Halifax and begin a resurrection up the table for 2012.
Yarnbury Youth Ruling Yorkshire
Yarnbury RUFC Under 16s are setting Yorkshire Rugby on fire with eight consecutive wins to the season. In a recent cup match, Yarnbury overcame a physical Guisborough side to reach the Yorkshire Cup QuarterFinals in a comprehensive 31-0 win. Jack Brown lead the charge in the foggy conditions with two brilliant tries in front of the big crowd looking on. Captain fantastic Toby Denton was in the thick of the action as well for Yarnbury, kicking perfectly for Brown’s second try and also took charge to cross over for his own in the cup tie. Yarnbury had an assailable lead at the break leaving Guisborough a mountain to climb as they lead comfortably 24-0. The second-half saw Guisborough come out of the blocks quickly but the solid resolute
Yarnbury U16’s
defence of Yarnbury held tight and Eddie Brownlee settled the match once and for all as he broke the line to cross for his side’s final try following a five metre scrum. An imperious Tom Woodley took the man of the match accolade in what was an excellent team performance against a big strong side, and proved that the lads are certainly a team to be reckoned with this season.

Ton up Titans standing proud before their 100-0 thrashing of Lincoln (photo: Ivor Hughes)
100-0 Titans Pile Ton on Sorry Lincoln
Trinity Titans Rugby League side look close to securing the BUCS Yorkshire Men’s League following a 100-0 mauling over a struggling Lincoln side.
Mark Smith Your Friendly Local Plumber
Relentless in attack the Titans secured the 100 point mark with a try in the very last play of the match to make club history. Trailing by almost 80 points in difference to closest rivals Bradford, Titan knew they had to put on a show in order to remain in contention and edge ever closer to this year’s league title. With just four matches left to play of the season, Titans must avoid defeat to Bradford and win their remaining games against lesser opposition to guarantee winning the division. The Brownberrie Lane side play two home fixtures in row next against Hull and Sheffield before travelling to play the reverse fixture against Lincoln, who are unlikely to be relishing that match up anytime soon. A fine season so far for the Titans has seen them maintain an incredible 100% record and it seems that only a major disaster would stop the dominate squad from being crowned the Yorkshire Champions.
