A Letter From The Editor Happy New Year and welcome to the first Covered of 2012. New Years bring with them promises of change, self-improvement, new minds and new bodies. If you’ve decided that 2012 will be the year you make changes then there is plenty of inspiration in Covered this month from advertisers such as Trinity Fitness, Diligent Health, Sureslim, Slimming World and Northern Hypnosis. Also tips from Susan Harper Todd – our resident life coach. Covered Magazine is making changes too as we launch our successful publication in new areas, reaching thousands more readers – starting with LS28 and Rodley in February. Ivor Hughes, Covered photographer and subeditor will assume editorship temporarily whist we launch the new titles. I’m sure you’ll make Ivor as welcome as you have me and wish him good luck. Please contact Ivor with any news, views or photo requests – you’ll be in safe hands.

Bob’s Bit Happy New Year to everyone! When I look back over recent months and the many successes that the Horsforth Let Down By Leeds group has achieved, I feel that after too many years of neglect the Town of Horsforth is finally starting to receive some of the resources that have been denied over the previous 15 years. At last the faceless bureaucrats in Leeds are taking some notice. Horsforth is being listened to again. Why did it have to take so long? Street Sweeping Several residents have written to me following my comments about dangerous footpaths and accumulations of rubbish in our ginnels and rights of ways. One particular area being Stoney Lane which despite being reported consistently over the last twelve months has still not been cleared, another hot spot is the Footpath between Kerry Street and The King Edwards known as "The Chicken Steps" which is a disgrace and is covered with litter and leaves. Grass Cutting I have received notification from Councillor Collins that the contractor responsible for cutting our public grass and verges in Horsforth has finally been replaced and that a new team will be commencing this month.
The views of Bob Horsforth are not necessarily those of the publisher.
Local Matters
http://horsforthletdownbyleeds.blogspot.com/
The problem of neglect that many areas have suffered over the summer should now be resolved. I will however continue to monitor the situation closely. Another great result! Town Street There has been an incident recently when an elderly resident with failing eyesight walked into a street sign that has been situated in the middle of the footpath opposite St Margaret's School on Town Street. As can be seen this is clearly dangerous and must be repositioned as a priority. If you know of any similar situations please get in touch. Parking controls Whilst the "soft target" of the Hall Park car park continues to be enforced by the authorities whole areas of the town are still without effective parking controls. Specific problem areas being reported daily are vehicles driven onto the footpath and verges of St Margaret's Road, Hawksworth Road, Broadgate Crescent, Church Close and the Victorias. We need the support of the authorities to target these real problem areas. Surely our locally funded PCSOs should be targeting these areas? Best wishes to everyone for 2012. Bob Horsforth
The ‘Chicken Steps’ does anyone know why they are so called?

Bah, Christmas, Humbug!
Local Matters
December’s issue of Covered featured LCC’s ticketing of a disability blue-badged car in the car park opposite St Margaret’s Church Hall fundraising bazaar. The visitor had parked on a raised cobbled area. Not in anyone’s way, they got a ticket slapped right on top of their blue badge. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, we quipped in the caption of the photograph. LCC’s response? Fa-la-la-la, la-la HA HA! Dawn Thomas from Horsforth, pictured left, had done the neighbourly thing driven her friend Christine Miller to the service. The heartfelt sermon, rousing music, sight of tots dressed as shepherds and kings and the pies and coffee gave them all the warmth and community spirit of Christmas. Until they returned to the car park. Dawn had parked out of the way, though not in a marked bay.

Cookridge Camera Club
Cookridge Camera Club is part of the Cookridge Village Association and meets at 7.30 every Wednesday evening in the Village Hall. A visit to their (own) website cookridgecameraclub.co.uk shows the activity and diversity of the fifty years old club – and the high standard achieved by its members. When Covered’s own photographer visited, officers of the club were previewing that evening’s topic of discussion – “Members’ responses to the Chairman’s Challenge” – a two-stranded fun approach to the manipulation of digital images. There are two schools of thought about the point at which digital manipulation ceases to be photography and becomes op art. Is it genuine enhancement or merely a shallow means of disguising bad photographs? Anyway, and as the image shows, our photographer did try and enter into the spirit of things.

Pantomime in St Margaret’s Church Hall
The Riding Lights Theatre Company is a substantial touring company based in Friargate, York, and Give It Back Mak! one of two Christmas pantomime productions they were performing throughout England. On Monday 19 December it was St Margaret’s turn to host two sittings of playwright Paul Burbidge’s part pantomime, part nativity and part medieval mystery play. With slapstick, acrobatics, puppetry, music, audience participation and obligatory corny jokes. The afternoon performance was at capacity with an audience of around 200. The evening saw fewer, enabling the performance to be set more sympathetically to children wishing to gather round.
Local Matters
Peter Shaw and Phoebe Gann of RLTC raised plenty of laughs in St Margaret’s Church Hall – here as shepherds in the opening scene of Give It Back Mak! (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
It is a credit to Horsforth Churches Together that they took the initiative, and time and trouble, to bring such an acclaimed theatre group to the town. Having already underwritten the cost of the play through other fundraising activities, the event was such a success that HCT is planning similar events in 2012. Covered will, of course, be keeping everyone posted. Oh yes they were! Pantomime is all about split-second timing. At precisely thee minutes past two Rev George Bailey (Woodside Methodist Church and HCT Chairman) was welcoming the audience and introducing the play. Simultaneously, LCC began scouring the free car park opposite for vehicles not parked within marked bays. Again (see last month’s issue), a disabled blue badge was no defence against their own brand of seasonal greetings.
Meanwhile, LCC was raising plenty of revenue in the car park opposite. Equally laudable, if not applaudable, was LCC’s commitment to equal opportunities – everyone got a ticket, blue badged or not. (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
Local Charity Reveals New Wheels
Safe Haven, a registered charity that helps Leeds residents in need of new furniture following crisis, has recently invested in a new vehicle to help them in their work. The previous vehicle was far smaller and restricted the charity in the amount of furniture they could collect and deliver in the area. Funds were donated by Horsforth St Margaret’s Stallions under 11’s team, Leeds City Council Outer North West Area Committee Well Being Fund and other contributors. Well done to all involved and to readers of Covered who have supported the charity.
If you are able to help Safe Haven with their work in the community please contact Project Manager, Tony Anderson on: 0113 345 8331 or drop into Safe Haven, Willow Green, Parkside, Horsforth.

Message from the Chair of Horsforth Town Council. A heartfelt New Year to everyone in Horsforth! A big “Thank You” to the children and parents, the school choirs and the Horsforth City of Leeds Band, who made the Switch-on of the Christmas Tree Lights and annual visit of Father Christmas such a special occasion. Thank You too to the Lord Mayor of Leeds who helped Father Christmas and me switch on the lights. Tightening our belts The New Year brings an ongoing challenge for the Council and its committees, to continue to meet spending needs within the agreed budgets. This is seen in the many comments about the use of an existing tree for this years’ Christmas lights. Leeds City Ward Councillors generously provided funds to keep the street lights, – for which we give grateful thanks,
but the limited Town Council budget could not meet the charges set by Leeds for a Christmas Tree.

Plenty of Food for Thought on Horsforth Town Street
Horsforth Live at Home Scheme coordinates a wide range of activities and support functions to improve the quality of life, and reduce social isolation, among the retired community. On 22 December, the Thursday before Christmas, volunteers spent a day at Central Methodist Church distributing hampers of food among their community. First I would like to wish all readers of Covered a very Happy and Healthy New Year for 2012. Stuart Andrew MP
It is clear that there is already much to look forward to in 2012 for Leeds and the UK as a whole, with a number of ‘once in a lifetime’ events due to take place. It should be an exciting year for us as a nation.
The summer will bring the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, with events taking place across the country to celebrate 60 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. In addition to this, we can also look forward to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, showcasing our country and sportsmen and sportswomen to the world. This should have a huge impact on tourism and will provide a lasting legacy for generations to come, inspiring the sports stars of the future. The Olympic Torch Relay will be a real cause for celebration in Leeds and a great opportunity for the whole country to get involved and support the inspirational people who have been chosen to carry it. I will certainly be there to cheer on the torch bearers as they come through Yorkshire. Wishing all my constituents the very best for 2012.
I would be pleased to hear from any readers with comments or concerns - and can supply more detailed information on request. Yours, Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com
The Longest Day
One of a team of six from Grace Community Church dispensing coffee and goodwill to Leeds-bound commuters on Horsforth Station in the week before Christmas (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
Smiles all round on a wet Wednesday morning on Horsforth Station, four days before Christmas and the longest day of the year. The culprits for spreading so much cheer and festive spirit among the Leeds-bound commuters were a team of six from Grace Community Church (North Leeds), based in Cookridge Village Hall. Each morning in the week before Christmas they were dispensing free coffee from 7.15 to 8.45, while promoting their special Christmas and New Year services and a series of New Year’s Eve walks in Roundhay Park. Year round, their core services for both children and adults are at 10am each Sunday. There are other social groups and activities. Give Covered a call to claim Dear Covered, Bob Horsforth mentioned new markings at Horsforth roundabout (Covered Edition 9). As someone who virtually lives on Horsforth roundabout (by the Esso Station), I have to use the roundabout several times a day. Can I say how pleasant it is now to be able to use the roundabout in a morning without the threat of people in the middle lane suddenly turning left to force their way in front of you as they go down to Rodley (despite the fact that you are going straight ahead to Rawdon). Also there are now no life-threatening occasions with cars coming along the ring road and shooting across the roundabout at 45 mph. I think it will take a little longer before we can announce it is a failure. Andrew Peel Calverley Lane Dear Covered, I live in Craggwood Close, Horsforth and over the last couple of years I have, along with other local residents reported pot holes in Craggwood Road and these have been repaired fairly

promptly but recently the surface was starting to completely break up and needed a more substantial repair. A neighbour asked me about it so I raised the problem with Cllr Townsley and he arranged for highways to do the repairs. Resurfacing works were completed last week. Many thanks to Cllr Townsley. Roger Harris Dear Covered, Your readers may have noticed that this year that there were no traditional Christmas trees in Horsforth or at the junction of Over Lane and Larkfield Road in Rawdon. This is because Leeds City Council withdrew funding for festive lights and Christmas trees to the outer areas of the city, continuing to fund only those in the centre. News of the withdrawal of funding came through rather late in the day. It was then a mad dash for Horsforth Town and City Councillors to use some of the 'Community' funds to pay for the lights for Horsforth Town Street, New Road Side and a few on Alexandra Road. The trees are a separate issue. We thought it best, considering the short time scale, to light up existing trees this year in Horsforth and then, next year, to plant some permanent and appropriate species. This way we can look forward to having festively lit trees each year. Yours Sincerely Cllr. Chris Townsley Liberal Democrat Horsforth Ward Editor’s Note: Though LCC’s news might have been communicated earlier, it certainly sounds as if our councillors’ plans to plant permanent trees are less costly to both the ratepayer and the environment.

A very happy New Year to all readers. This is a difficult month for gardening. It is important to keep off the ground and avoid digging when the soil is frozen, alternatively, when very wet. The recent warm spells have encouraged many weeds to continue growing, so it is good to pull them out when every the opportunity arises. I hesitate to say hoe them out, unless you know exactly where your spring bulbs have been planted. It is too easy to forget, and slice the developing bulbs before they have sent their green shoots through the ground. Take advantage of any special offers for spring bulbs and plant them either in the ground, or in the soil. They will flower later this year, although they will perform normally in future years.

No Supermarket Plan for Low Lane
Local Matters
Happy New Year.
Good news for some concerned residents! I can dispel the urban myth that there is to be a supermarket on Low Lane and inform readers that an application has recently been received to replace the former car salesroom with 42 houses. Mind you, how many more dwellings can Horsforth/ Rawdon cope with, bearing in mind applications have already been lodged for over 1000 houses at the Kirkstall Road site and something like 500 at Woodside? Any comments from readers will be gratefully received. Parking, particularly on pavements and grass verges, has had a great deal of exposure in Covered and is something I have been looking into on behalf of residents. I now have the official line from the Police and Leeds City Council and will include this in next month’s column. In the meantime, if you have a particular parking problem you would like me to address then please let me know. CoveredCoach - with Susan Harper Todd Letting Your Heart Rule Your Mind
Make 2012 your year. The year you turn your life around and start listening to your intuition and your heart, instead of your mind. Your mind is not who you are, it is just a part of who you are, that gathers information and helps with problem solving. Most of us have forgotten the loving, carefree person we were when we were a child, acting on instinct and intuition, listening to our heart instead of our mind. Having fun and doing what we loved! That is who we really are, not the person we have become. Growing up we are moulded by teachers, parents and peers into the person they want us to be and gradually we become that person because we want them to like us! When I was at school I remember doing things because my friends did, so they would like me, when instinctively I felt uncomfortable doing it. Your intuition is always right, it is advice that comes from the heart, from who you really are. So this week, the start of a brand New Year, when you have a decision

Knowing Me, Knowing You, Ah-ha! What’s the point of counselling? Andy Williams, Clinical Director of The Horsforth Centre for Counselling, Coaching & Psychotherapy talks about the work of the centre and the purpose of seeking out a counsellor, coach or therapist. It was at a recent Christmas party that the decision was finally made to never tell anyone that I work as a psychotherapist. There is the risk of two reactions; either a belief that therapy is for the soft and weak or my fellow guest immediately begins to disclose deeply intimate details usually about their partner who is drinking mulled wine next to them! Clearly I exaggerate – and I have actually met some wonderful people at parties this Christmas – but what is the point of counselling and therapy? A professional relationship Your therapist will provide you with a unique, professional relationship where you can share your unique experience. The counsellor (therapist) works together with you to explore issues that are important to you or areas that you would like to change. You will gain a new understanding of your motivations and behaviour. This happens as therapy offers a new perspective. New experience. The counselling relationship offers many of us the new experience of being understood without being judged and our particular difficulties acknowledged. This professional relationship is confidential, and therapy can act as a way of working through difficulties without it affecting family or friendships.
Answering “why?” Therapy frequently helps with answering the question of “why do these things keep happening to me?” Through counselling we get to understand why we think or do what we do so that we can make changes and do things differently. Being me! Ultimately counselling can move us to a place where we can learn to love and accept ourselves as a whole, including our dark, difficult bits as well as the more socially acceptable and “easy-to-live-with” parts. At the Horsforth Centre we work flexibly and with a light, professional touch to meet individuals’ unique needs in an effective way. * Desperate in Horsforth? (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
The Medusa Bar was the venue for this group of Horsforth friends’ Christmas outing the Friday before. Spotted by our photographer Ivor Hughes, they told Covered that they and others had been discussing the possibility of posing for a Calendar Girl type charity fundraising calendar – possibly based on the TV series Desperate Housewives – “How about Desperate Horswives?” they asked. The group sometimes goes out in themed fancy dress – making costume an obvious option for some of the shots. Anyone with any suggestions for themes or locations, or sponsorship or other help or support, can pass their details to Covered magazine and we’ll pass them on.

How to Get a Firmer Stomach Without Going to the Gym Mums in particular seem to find it hard to make time for theirselves. Let alone finding the time or motivation to go to the gym. So, if you find it hard to get away from the kids but still want a firm stomach here are three simple exercises for a that you can do at home in 5 minutes a day.
1) The Plank
Local Ladies
2) The Plank
1. The Plank
The plank strengthens your stomach muscles without hurting your lower back (like sit ups do). • • • •
Begin face down resting on your forearms Lift your body up, lock your legs out straight and squeeze your backside Tighten your stomach to stop your back from sagging Hold for 30 seconds. Build up to 60 seconds over a few weeks.
2. Hip Extension
1) The Hip Extension
2) The Hip Extension
Ok, the hip extension isn’t directly for your stomach. But we need to strengthen both the front and back side of your core for best results (It'll reduce the chances of you getting back pain). • • • •
Begin lying on your back, both knees bent and feet flat on the floor Push your hips up off the floor Pause for a second at the top, squeezing your backside Lower your hips down to the floor and repeat for 15 repetitions.
1) The Side Plank
3. Side Plank
The side plank strengthens your obliques; the muscles that wrap round your waist • • • • • • •
Begin lying on your side propped up on your forearm Bend your knees so your legs are 90 degrees Lift your hips up off the floor Squeeze your backside and keep your stomach tight Hold for 30 seconds, then repeat on the other side Build up to 60 seconds over the next few weeks. If this exercise is too hard you can make it easier by having your bottom knee bent to give you more support.
Once you’ve completed one circuit of the three exercises go back to exercise 1 and repeat all three exercises again. The goal is to build up to 3 total circuits over the next few weeks.
2) The Side Plank

YOU COULD LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF TOO ON THE “LOSE 12LBS IN 12 WEEKS” PROGRAMME
Deirdre’s story...
“
My goal was to lose the weight I’d put on from my injury – around 1.5 stone. My clothes size had shot from a 12 to a 16... I’d become a 40 something ‘mum’ who’d just given up. When I’d had enough I called Kieran. I’ve never been one for the gym – always found it boring – but because the exercises were so varied, and I shared the time with other clients, I felt less inhibited and the time flew by. Over the first 3 months I steadily lost 8lbs. Then I really started to focus and I have now lost another 14lbs.
“
Deirdre after losing 22 lbs
Do You Want To Lose A Stone Or Two? All you need to do is turn up at our private fitness studio in Rodley 2-3 times a week for your 45 minute guided fitness sessions - no thinking required. Plus make a few tweaks to your diet (and just so we’re clear that’ll be adding a few things in, not banning everything you enjoy). And before you know it you’ll be looking and feeling great in your favourite clothes again! Ready to get back to feeling good in your favourite clothes? Call Kieran on 01132 577 286 to book your free 12in12 consultation or visit 12in12weeks.com for more info. Free consultation valid until 31st Jan 2012

Leap Into Action
Local Business
Leeds City Council is asking owner/managers of new start up and micro businesses to ‘save the date’ for an important enterprise event to be held on a date which only comes around once every four years – 29th February. ‘Leap into Action’ is a free event and will provide an opportunity for businesses to see first hand what support is available from LCC and other organisations It is hoped the event will inspire and inform businesses and new start ups to help them develop and grow. The day will include an exhibition area as well as a number of seminars aimed at anyone thinking about starting up or who has already taken the plunge and wants guidance on areas such as sourcing finance, business support, finding office space, tax and national insurance, how to network, protecting new products and developing brands as well as the hot topic of social media and making the best of it for business. Simon Brereton, enterprise support team manager for Leeds City Council said: “At a time when there is a great deal of uncertainty about what business support is available we felt it was important to highlight the large amount of

useful information, a lot of which is free, currently available from the council and local organisations”. The event takes place on Wednesday 29th February 2012 at the Leeds Central Library from 11am to 6.00pm. The guide is available by emailing katie.dunlevey@enterpriseleeds.co.uk or calling 0113 220 6350. It can also be downloaded from www.enterpriseleeds.co.uk (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
The Leeds Trinity Business Network took a break last month but still found time for a get together at the Medusa Bar in Horsforth. Sarah Coleman, Manager of the Sandbar Group kindly hosted the evening, pictured here with Ben Frost, one of LTBN’s growing membership.

Horsforth Harriers
Harriers have enjoyed another successful year and go into 2012 in high hopes of a repeat of their successes. The Annual Horsforth 10K was a great triumph which everybody at the club will certainly look back on from the 2011 calendar, raising money for the Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre, while Covered favourite Rob Furness has certainly had a memorable year for the Horsforth running club. The club’s annual presentation evening is fast approaching, on Friday 27th January, and is to be held at Yarnbury RUFC clubhouse on Brownberrie Lane. Harriers have organised a live band, a raffle, food and plenty of dancing for what is likely to be a fantastic evening looking back over the past 12 months. Harriers are always welcoming new runners of all abilities and encourage anybody who might be interested to contact the club and come along to a Tuesday night session and enjoy the friendly atmosphere at the club. On a separate note, Harriers are on the lookout for a new Social Secretary, for more details contact the club directly or visit the website horsforthharriers.co.uk

Aireborough RUFC Sitting Pretty Aireborough finished off 2011 with a comfortable 36-0 victory over Bramley Pheonix to end the year on a high following two successive defeats on home turf. The side begin their new year by welcoming a struggling Halifax Vandals side who sit one place off the bottom of the league and will be hoping to beat both the Vandals and the inconsistent York Railway before welcoming the Yorkshire Division Three leaders Roundhegians at the end of January. The leaders have suffered just one defeat in the league so far this season, winning 14 of the opening 15 games, while Aireborough have won seven and only two of those have come at home. Aireborough start the New Year sitting pretty in 5th and just one point away from fourth placed Baildon, a position that the Aireborough boys will have their eyes set on grabbing in the next few weeks.

Leeds City Juniors
Under 14s Dec 2011 Leeds City Juniors u/14s, managed by Jem Lee, made a great start to the 2011/12 season by winning their first 5 games - including success in no fewer than 3 cup competitions. Moving into the New Year, they were quickly back onto the trails of two of those cups. The first was on 8 January with a visit to Halifax when their thrilling 4-5 win (after extra time) in the 4th round tie against previously unbeaten Crossley Juniors saw them progress in the West Riding Cup. [116 teams entered the County Cup at the start of the season and the win against Crossley puts Leeds into the last 8 and the quarter final - a great achievement in itself.] Their next test is against Wigton Moor in the Garforth League Supplementary Cup, an away match to be played on 15 January. The Supplementary Cup offers the u/14s the chance of going one better in a Garforth League Cup Final - as u/11s they had been unlucky to finish on the wrong end of a penalty shoot out. This year, as u/14s, they might just win an age group cup title themselves.
Recent signings mean competition for places is strong and, having played just 3 league games, the lads will all no doubt be looking to stake their claim for a place in the starting eleven. Imminent matches against Gipton, Rothwell and Wortley all need to be won if Leeds is to maintain pressure at the top of the table. Jem Lee is confident in his team’s ability. He puts this season’s early success down to commitment at training and to the increased ambition displayed by all players once they take to the pitch. If they can start 2012 with the same sense of urgency demonstrated at the start of the season, Leeds City Juniors u/14s could be in for their best season yet. As ever….Come on Leeds!

Horsforth St Margaret’s Under 12 Stallions race into 2012
Horsforth Under 12 Stallions entered 2012 with their impressive 100% record intact. In their quest to defend their Craven, Aire & Wharfe A league title, the team remained unbeaten in both the league and the cup. Their top scorer of the campaign, Louie Gibson scored an impressive 22 goals in the run up to the New Year, including three hat-tricks. Fellow strikers Jamie Bates and Loz Patterson bagged a further 18

goals between them, with no fewer than eight other players putting their names on the scoresheet. Their excellent goal difference is thanks to their stalwart defence and excellent keeper Connor Barrowclough. Stallions’ New Year schedule is tight. At the time of going to press, their fixture on 15 January could be any one of three opponents at either of two grounds. Away to Silsden on the 22nd, their next certain home fixture is Oakworth on the 29th – KO 10am at Holy Name School.
Yarnbury had endured a torrid end to the year with just one solitary win by the 1st XV in a month where the club lost six of eight fixtures.
11 matches. The Hornets are rock bottom in their Division and face the league leaders Sheffield and 3rd place Scunthorpe this month as they hope to pick up some much needed points.
The 1st XV suffered defeat to the hands of Barnsley 33-6, and then West Park Leeds 24-9 before edging past West Leeds 28-23 in a gutsy, backs to the wall performance. The side begin the New Year by hosting Hullensians before a trip to Skipton and finally at home to 3rd place Wath upon Dearne.
Finally, the 3rd XV ended December with a battling 13-13 draw with Huddersfield YMCA after being whitewashed 29-0 the previous week to Keighley. The 3rds have a busy January to contend with and will be fighting for results against Skipton, Cleakheaton, Otliansians and N. Ribblesdale.
The 2nd XV will be glad to see the back of 2011 following 11 defeats from the season’s opening

Golden Old Mods... Guiseley Aim New Year for Promotion
Blue Square North side Guiseley AFC are enjoying another tremendous campaign as they look to go one better than last season and achieve promotion to the top tier of non-league football. Steve Kittrick’s side have been outstanding so far, unbeaten since mid-October in the F.A Cup whilst you’d need to go back to September for the Lions last league defeat. Guiseley start their assault on winning the division with a lengthy trip to Bishops Stortford before facing promotion rivals Stalybridge Celtic at home in the F.A Trophy, a hotly anticipated fixture between two strong sides. The fixture list certainly doesn’t ease the Lions into the new year and Kittrick’s men will play a staggering seven matches in the first month alone, including two mouth-watering derby matches at home to Harrogate Town and Halifax in the West Riding County Cup. Guiseley have been boosted further with news that on-loan signing Chris Senior has extended his deal at the club until the end of the season whilst the Nethermoor faithful will welcome back last season’s top goalscorer James Walshaw following his release from Darlington. A warm reception and new supporters always welcome, Nethermoor is the place for any football fan interested in a successful local side. Match entry for Adults is £10 for home matches, with a licensed bar and sky sports, more information can be found on the club website www.guiseleyafc.co.uk You can also follow live match updates on the club’s Twitter account @Guiseleyafc
Old Modernians will be glad to see the back of 2011 following a string of disappointing results in the Yorkshire Division Three which sees them sit bottom of the league. The Mods ended the year with a 41-8 loss to Thornensians after being put to the sword by League Leaders Roundhegians the previous week in a 38-0 whitewash. Seven defeats in a row hardly makes good reading for the side who will be looking to turn over a new leaf with the introduction of 2012 and kick-start their season with early victories and propulsion up the league. The Cookridge side open the New Year by hosting 3rd placed Rotherham Pheonix before trips to mid-table sides Burley and Old Rishworthians. It’s coming to a stage in the season now where Mods need to pick up the points if they are to lift themselves up the league.
