Latest News Following the successful campaign to stop even more houses being built on Low Lane it has been announced that the developers have withdrawn their latest planning application for 42 houses on the old Carnell’s garage site. This is great news and means that the site could now be used for much needed employment creation, whilst not adding to the burden on local resources. Parking Residents on Woodview Close have been in touch with me following several recent confrontations with commuters parking across drives and blocking access. This would have been exacerbated had the proposed housing development on Low Lane gone ahead.
Potholes on Bachelor Lane
Whilst the Traffic Warden continues to target the Hall Park Car Park with regular evening visits, one resident was forced to ask “I thought the Park was gifted to the people of Horsforth?” Should Leeds CC be using it as a profit opportunity? Update Following last month’s focus on the state of Kerry Hill, my campaign received an email from a grateful resident saying that the street sweeper visited the following week and the whole area is now much tidier. Thank you to all concerned. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the area around St James’ flats which have not had their bins emptied again recently. This is one of the first things visitors see when travelling along Low Lane and must be resolved. Bachelor Lane The dubious honour of being the street in the worst state of repair has now been awarded to Bachelor Lane; local people have sent in their nomination and photographs which show huge craters and crumbling tarmac along the length of this busy street. Traffic Calming There has been a further accident caused by speeding traffic using the “Rat Run” down Alexander Road prompting further calls for the speed limit of 20 MPH to be extended from Broadgate Lane. This measure would go a long way to making residents in the area safer.
Waste from St James’ Flats on Low Lane
Thank you to everyone who has been in touch since last month, please keep your comments coming in. The community is starting to see many improvements, especially as the local election is just a few months away! Best Wishes Bob Horsforth “Fighting for a fair deal for Horsforth” Editor’s note – Bob Horsforth sometimes forwards to us supportive emails that his campaign group has received. None can be considered for inclusion in our readers’ letters without the sender’s consent and contact details.

Room 101
Since George Orwell first came up with the concept, many people have been asked to contemplate their own Room 101, a room containing their own worst fears.
However, 101 should soon have a new more positive association. In 1937, the emergency 999 phone number was introduced. Now 75 years later, an equivalent non-emergency number, 101, has been introduced across the country. In 2010, the British Crime Survey found that only 54% of the public know how to contact their local police if they want to talk to them about policing, crime or anti social behaviour.
So what does this mean for Local residents of Horsforth, Cookridge, Rawdon and Yeadon? Well Matters hopefully a much easier number to remember when phoning your local police control room……and it is still is your West Yorkshire police control room that answer your calls. There is no national or international call centre, just West Yorkshire Police officers and staff available 24 hours a day to handle your enquiry. You will hear a recorded message first though, when you phone. This is because the 101 number is a national number. Technology at the telephone exchange will connect you to the nearest Police force unless you choose otherwise. Worth remembering if you are ringing on a mobile phone whilst walking on Billings Hill or the Chevin – the technology may offer to connect you to North Yorkshire Police first as the phone mast you are using may be in North Yorkshire. One last thing, this does not replace the 999 number which should always be called in an emergency, when life is in danger or when a crime is in progress.

Stuart Andrew MP
Increasing transport funding for the North of England is something I have been very vocal about for years and I was pleased to see this discussed in the House of Commons in February. A local media campaign has really brought this matter out in the open in Leeds and I have long felt that there is a clear north/south divide when it comes to funding. According to the Institute for Public Policy Research 84 percent of planned new transport infrastructure spending was aimed at London and the South East in comparison with 6 percent in the North of England. Whilst the Government is taking steps to increase investment in the North with projects such as the two new stations in Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge and the electrification of the line between Manchester and Leeds, I believe more needs to be done to address this imbalance and as such raised this in the House of Commons last month. I was also pleased to have the opportunity this month to lead a debate on the responsibility that high street
banks have to assist carers when it comes to online banking for the people they care for. Having been approached by a constituent who is a carer for her son and hearing her story of struggling to get banks to take carers into consideration when setting their online banking policy I was able to hear first hand just how challenging this seemingly straightforward act of accessing money online can be. Carers should not have to spend their valuable spare time, when they are not looking after the people they care for, going through a complex bureaucratic complaints procedure.

Trinity Attracts Heavyweights for Annual Journalism Week

Week commencing 27 February was Journalism Week for Leeds Trinity University College, with over 20 speakers from across the media industry delivering lectures and workshops open to students, alumni and contacts in the business community. Although the headlined guests were Channel 4’s Jon Snow and BBC’s Harry Gration, industry heavyweights such as Peter Salmon (Director BBC North) were better placed to give students an overview of broadcasting in the north and the direction in which it was heading. Previously Controller of BBC One, Peter Salmon’s present responsibilities include the BBC presence at Salford’s Media City. With over 2000 staff and still growing, it is BBC’s second largest production centre.

New Sweet Shop on Horsforth Town Street Once they were found on every street corner, dispensing sherbet lemons and gobstoppers in white paper bags at three pence a quarter. They were kept afloat on a tide of children’s pocket money and were a core part of everyone’s childhood. By the Seventies, however, the traditional sweet shop was all but extinct, seen off by a double-whammy of supermarkets and high property prices. Now sweet shops are making a comeback. The success of the revitalised sweet shop is partly based on nostalgia, partly on a craving among the public for the simple things in life. The Sweet Shop in the centre of Horsforth Town Street focuses on traditional sweets, currently carrying 200 varieties and expanding. Specialities include an extensive range of sugarfree varieties – for diabetics and people with similar dietary requirements and locating supplies of old favourites long lost from the high street. The Sweet Shop, 60 Town Street, Horsforth LS18 4AP. Open Mon-Sat, 11 to 4.30.

Jubilee Planning Underway The Council is working with local voluntary organisations and Leeds City Council in preparation for the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. We are very encouraged by the wholehearted response of so many people, businesses, organisations and groups in working together to make a programme of activities to make sure that 4 June is a very special day. If you, your organisation or business want to help either financially or in kind, please contact the Town Clerk. The more the merrier! The Mysterious Affair at Weetwood
Covered investigates some strange goings on in the local publishing world... “You sound surprised and alarmed that I have called” observed the reporter. “Surprised and delighted, actually” Liz replied. “The only people that call me on this number are my mother and best friend.” “Well, I’m neither. Tell me about Weetwood Writer’s Group”.

Perhaps you or an acquaintance have a story to Liz paused; “We are a handful of independent tell – or a recipe book or interesting piece of local writers intending to have fortnightly workshops at history you’d like to get out there? Liz Cable – 0113 Weetwood Hall over the next few months. And a 2679894 conference in December, focusing on e-publishing. “While we are happy to accommodate people writing only for pleasure, there are some among us who also believe they have material worthy of publication. But we don’t see why anyone should necessarily go through all the hoops and expense of attracting the attention of agents and publishers. Townsley Talks
Local Matters
Although I have not received any official comments nobody, in conversation anyway, appears to like the new configuration of A65/Ring Road Roundabout, (me included). I think it is more confusing than it was previously and the cross hatching gives the driver more to think about while making a manoeuvre. I would appreciate any comments from the readership. From mtorists either in favour of the scheme or downright against it. I believe that it is a complete waste of time and expense constructing a system that quite frankly, in my opinion, just does not work. Cllr Chris Townsley Christopher.Townsley@leeds.gov.uk
Community Safety Projects & Funding

Some of the money for these projects comes from grants that we provide. One of the items reported to us was “Capture Technology” This project uses high tech equipment to track and trace stolen property. The project includes capture cars where sat navs are left on display, houses set up to look like they are occupied with a laptop on display, or bicycles; the items in question contain tracking equipment or software which is used to track where stolen items are taken The project has had successful outcomes, leading

Valuable evidence is also gained about where stolen goods are taken and the action taken against those receiving and handling them. During the last 18 months the project has led to the arrest of 25 individuals and the most notable success being the sentencing of a burgla to 876 days in prison. Drumming School Opposition
Local Matters
Disgruntled residents in Quarry Terrace, Horsforth (off Town Street), are at their wits end due to noise from a nearby drumming school. The school opened late in 2010 on the first floor in a residential building used previously as an office. Neighbours suffered last summer when they opened their windows, or went outside or sat in a conservatory. Complaints to Leeds City Council’s Environmental Department persuaded the school to install double glazing. Although the reduced noise was found by LCC to Peter Heavisides (left) and Paul Hellyer outside Mr Heaviside’s home in Quarry Terrace. Leeds Winter Book Sale - Just the Ticket!
Horsforth St Margaret’s Church Hall, or at least the car park opposite, was yet another important fundraising event for Leeds City Council on Sunday 12 February. Both the hall and car park were busier than usual due to the annual Leeds Winter Book Sale - of secondhand, antiquarian and collectable books. Bookseller Gert van Hoff, pictured, believed he was being socially responsible by parking his car out of everyone else’s way in a corner of the car park; “rather than hog a space all day”. Not so. Gert, from York, was the latest to fall prey to LCC’s eagle eyed parking wardens - and under the same holly tree as past victims visiting Zumba in the Park, St

Give Covered a call to claim Dear Covered I live at the top of Tinshill Lane and I use this road when I have to go into Horsforth. The parking situation at the bottom of this road and the junction of Tinshill Road has got increasingly worse over the last few months, people using the train are using the Tinshill Lane and the surrounding streets as an over spill parking area. The situation is just an accident waiting to happen, on two occasions whilst I have been negotiating cars that have been abandoned on both sides of Tinshill Lane oncoming traffic has hit and broken my side mirrors. Surely time has now come to say enough is enough and extend the double yellow lines further up and on both sides of Tinshill Lane. Just how the emergency vehicles, i.e. fire engines, ambulances and police Dear Covered, I was concerned to read Cllr Townsley’s responses in edition 12 of Covered Magazine about parking. Parking on verges is illegal and can result in a fine and driving license points. I live in one of the older houses along Victoria Walk and have seen various grass verges ruined by inconsiderate parking. Apparently LCC seem unwilling to take action about the wanton destruction of the grass verges. However he fails to mention that this is in fact an offence under the criminal damage act 1971 punishable by a fine and/or 3 months in prison. I think Cllr Townsley should be made aware that residents take pride in their area and are not prepared to see an attractive area destroyed. A resident of Victoria Walk, name & address supplied
Please can you help? Resident of the Grove Farm estate LS16 Editor’s Response: Thank you for your letter. Covered has reported the knock-on effects of overspill station parking in the past, including photographs of an accident higher up Tinshill Lane and the slalom effect lower down. We have learned that there is no easy answer to the problem. For example, extending double yellow lines in any direction would push the problem further up the hill and into side streets – and further inconvenience the residents themselves. Metro is working on its next Metro Railplan, which will include upgrading Horsforth Station and helping improve frequency and capacity of trains between York, Harrogate, Horsforth, Leeds and beyond. While Councillors Barry Anderson and Chris Townsley both welcome improved links, they are also concerned about the extra parking pressures brought by higher demand. Councillor Anderson has written to residents in the Wood Hills area giving details of proposed works and inviting comments to pass on to Leeds CC. Any readers wishing to comment may get a copy of that letter from Barry.Anderson@leeds.gov.uk. While it is reassuring to read in that letter that Network Rail is preserving the habitat of a colony of greater crested newts, it is evident that they are yet to come forward with a plan of all action necessary before LCC grants the planning application and necessary transfer of land. Editor’s note: Thank for supplying your name and address. My understanding, from Councilor Townsley's, LCC and WYP responses (published January), is that the motoring offence is obstruction - not an issue if there isn't any. For charges of criminal damage, a significant amount of the damage must be attributable to one driver - not, say, the one this morning who made an already deep hole fractionally deeper. Any changes to the status quo are the responsibility of the legislators and enforcers. To outlaw parking on verges would have a dramatic impact on communities, not least of all the residents and their visitors. So, with all due respect, I don't think this one can be pinned on any of LCCs councilors.

The bulb family are in full bloom now, so take off the dead heads as they go over and sprinkle a general fertiliser around the base to build up the flowers for next year. Always allow the leaves to die down naturally, even if they look slightly untidy.
You will have noticed the grass is starting to grow again with the milder weather, which means you should start to rake out all the old dead grass and moss. It is useful to also spike the lawn with your garden fork, and if the conditions are right, give it a first cut with the blades set high.
If you have a frost free environment, it is time to start sowing hardy annuals and perennials for your summer colour. It is also a good time to plant new perennial plants, splitting up old clumps to rejuvenate them and planting in new areas.
In the vegetable garden, sow broad beans in succession for an early crop. Enjoy your first forced rhubarb, providing a mulch for the main plants which should now be showing bright pink crowns. Apply sulphate of potash around all of your fruit trees and bushes to encourage flower and fruit production.
Witch hazels, camellias and other winter flowering shrubs have been looking lovely, if you need to prune them to keep them tidy this is the time as they start to finish flowering. Roses should also be pruned to keep an open goblet shape, with a top dressing of rose fertilizer hoed into the soil around the base.

Local Ladies
If you are really committed to self improvement and want to change your life, the exercise I am about to describe can help to free your mind from daily worries and fears. It is called Morning Pages because the idea is that every morning when you wake up and before you do anything else, you sit down and write 3 pages of long hand describing everything that is in your head. For example the dream you’ve just had, that you forgot to ring your sister last night, that you’re worried about work, about money, about your relationship, or that you don’t want to go to the gym today! Write down anything and everything that crosses your mind. Don’t worry about it being too negative – that’s good, because it gives an outlet to all the negative thoughts that would otherwise be stuck in your head all day! This is a way of clearing your mind ready for the day ahead. Writing helps to make sense of your life and writing by hand as opposed to on the computer connects

Serving the Community Tracey Greig
Local Ladies
Covered’s student placement from Trinity University College, Megan Savage, met a mainstay of the Horsforth and wider Leeds community. The dictionary defines ‘people person’ as someone who is warm and kind, enjoying interaction with people from all walks of life. 47-year-old Tracey Greig certainly fits that description. While her CV boasts a career spanning thirty years in the public sector, this competent businesswoman has successfully combined her work with numerous volunteering roles in the community – helping at homeless shelters and a local church. Tracey lives in Horsforth with her husband and teenage son, currently studying performing arts at Northumbria University. She understands not everyone is as fortunate so she strives to help people achieve their potential. “People say that I’m a real people person but actually I’m quite nosey,” Tracey joked. “I’m fascinated by people. I love to know how people work, their history, their background, what makes them tick.” Having started in the transport industry in Newcastle, Tracey transferred to London with the Department of Transport. She became interested in how people learn and adapt to change while training staff on a new computer system. In the early 1990s Tracey transferred to Leeds to work for the Highways Agency before moving to the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber. Then to the Regional Development Agency in 1999 as a senior manager with Yorkshire Forward “I was really interested in how economic development improved local communities, especially deprived ones, just to make sure everyone had equal access to opportunities.” Being at Yorkshire Forward from start to finish, Tracey witnessed the whole cycle. During the last two years, she helped develop a programme to support Senior Managers and their staff through its closure. She believes that closure was short sighted. “We did some great things, but nobody’s going to do that again because the money isn’t there any more. We’ve lost a lot in the North.”

Using skills developed throughout her career, Tracey supports her local community and also those who find life challenging. “You read about people who have done well even though they had a really tough start in life. That’s one of the reasons I’m involved in the Crypt” - she is a trustee for St George’s Crypt, a hostel for the homeless in Leeds. With the number of rough sleepers rising, the Crypt provides a place to stay, a social outlet, hot meals, therapy and counselling. “It’s not just a homeless centre, it’s about training and development, getting them some skills and back into the community”. As a Christian for many years, she is also Secretary at her local church, St James in Horsforth - looking at how it runs and helping organise events. Tracey is in currently the process of starting a new consultancy service, ‘You Must Be Wondering’, with four fellow ex–Yorkshire Forward staff. The service aims to help organisations maintain their high productivity through hard times with support with project management, coaching, mentoring and strategic development.

Phoenix Concert Band
Local Matters
The Phoenix Concert Band is one of many groups and organisations which regularly uses Leeds CC’s immense leisure and sporting facility at West Park Centre, Spen Lane LS16 5BE. Each Thursday, around forty of its members attend band practice and rehearsals under the watchful eye – and baton – of conductor Kieron Anderson. Kieron is an accomplished musician, conductor, composer and teacher involved in several other ventures. Apart from being musical director for three other ensembles and orchestras in the north, he is also Head of Music at Ilkley Grammar School.
Flautist and band secretary Helen Mitchell (Photos: Ivor Hughes)
The Phoenix Band welcomes new members in each of their three sections – woodwind, brass and percussion – though expects players to be at least Level 5 standard. Its repertoire includes a wide range of popular, folk, traditional brass and orchestral pieces. It is a registered charity. The Phoenix Concert Band is definitely orchestral rather than marching, though smaller ensembles can be made available for, say, village fêtes and garden parties. New Horsforth Book Club a Success Leeds Book Club, already with meetings established in Headingley and Leeds city centre, held its second Horsforth meeting on the evening of Wednesday 8 February at Medusa Bar, Town Street, Horsforth. Support and interest is growing, with the February attendance showing an increase from ten to fifteen. The book under the spotlight at February’s meeting was a past winner of the Man Booker prize, Iris Murdoch’s novel The Sea, The Sea. Led by organiser Niamh Foley’s infectious enthusiasm, the group immersed itself in a lively debate about the interaction of the characters and their position and purpose within the story itself.

Aireborough Duplicate Bridge Club
Local Matters
Bridge is a four-handed game of whist. Players sat opposite each other hunt in pairs. Each pair tries to squeeze every last trick from the cards they hold. Pre-game bidding is also an important part of the ritual - “Anything you can do, we can do better”. That said, you’d expect bridge to be a leisurely, contemplative pursuit. Not so, or at least not at one of Aireborough Duplicate Bridge Club’s recent Monday evenings. In February, at Rawdon Conservative Club. Pre-dealt hands were drawn at 7pm. Bidding was brisk and the play even brisker. There was blood on the velvet tablecloths within minutes.
Play is brisk and focused
Duplicate bridge? Yes. After each game, each table reconstructs the four-hand deal and replaces it in a holder known as a board. Boards are then rotated in one direction and one pair of players the other. And so on. By the end of play, each pair has played each board playing all the other pairs in the process. The duplication - or repetition - of each board significantly reduces the element of chance. The rotation of competitors generates a league. So, at least in theory, each pair’s tally of points is an accurate reflection of their performance on the evening. Monday evenings from 7pm at Rawdon Conservative Club. Around 30 members per meeting. Olympian Effort all Tied Up! Year 6 pupils at the Froebelian School, Horsforth, Leeds truly took the Olympic motto of ‘swifter, higher, stronger’ to heart when sitting their entrance exams for their chosen senior schools. Their efforts have gained them places in an impressive number of the region’s top independent schools. The fantastic results show that, between them, the twenty pupils have been awarded a magnificent total of 39 places including 10 scholarships. The children have received warm congratulations from the Headmaster, Mr Tranmer, and have been awarded traditional leavers’ ties in recognition of their achievements. ‘These results are a testament to the hard work the children have put in’, he said, ‘every pupil in our Year 6 class has achieved the offer of a place at their chosen school providing Froebelian, yet again, with a 100% success rate’. Mr Tranmer also gave praise to the teaching staff who have worked hard ensuring these children are given a ‘flying start’ to their senior school lives.

Two things I wish I had more of before I moved and now I have both I lived in a three bedroom bungalow before I bought my apartment but it’s amazing how the little jobs that need doing add up. I was forever forking out for someone to fix this or that. Now I don’t have to worry about a thing. I reckon I’m at least £50 a month better off since moving. No gas bills as everything is electric. Just one service charge means no separate water rates, no individual window cleaner or gardener to pay for. And as for external maintenance that’s all included. Bidders Auction Relocates to Guiseley Having closed their premises Yeadon in October, and now under new management, Bidders Auction got off to a flying - and romantic - start in their new premises at Gordon Mills, Netherfield Road, Guiseley, on the evening of Monday 13 February. Welcoming visitors to the new saleroom, co-director John Hirst nudged the calendar forward to Valentine’s Day and, on stage, popped the question to Julie, his longstanding partner. How could she refuse?
Local Business
Auctioneer David Gilchrist gets down to business (photos: Ivor Hughes)
Then down to business. Auctioneer David Gilchrist, retained by John Hirst and co-director Mark Huckleby from Bidders’ previous incarnation, set about the 800 lots, the sale realising around £13000 in total. Bidders’ Auction has an arrangement with seventeen police stations in West Yorkshire, selling unclaimed, unidentified and seized goods on their behalf. The fact that so many of the evening’s lots bore “police” stickers was an indication of the quantity and variety yet to come - particularly as, on that evening, the police entered items were from but three of the seventeen stations in question.

Leeds Trinity Business Network Student journalist Megan Savage reports her own university’s connection with the local business community February saw Leeds Trinity Business Network underway in 2012, inviting local businesses to a motivational talk from guest speaker Dr Emma Roberts and, of course, a chance to network, raise profiles and work together in mutual support. Since launching last year, Leeds Trinity Business Network has proven popular with local businessmen and women and has a growing membership. Twentyfive businesses attended the latest network, organised by Jess Sewter, Employer Partnership Manager at Trinity; “We want to provide a space for people to get to know each other, build relationships together and for us to connect with the local business community.” Attendees had a chance to network and create business links while indulging in cakes and coffee before a presentation by guest speaker, Dr Emma Roberts, Associate Principal Lecturer for Trinity’s Business and Management Department. Dr Roberts gave a presentation to the members on the introduction to transactional analysis, a way of

Aireborough Chasing the Pack Aireborough RUFC beat Thornensians 11-10 and were narrowly beaten 19-15 by fourth placed Rotherham Pheonix as they continue their quest up the Yorkshire Division Three. Aireborough’s victory over Thornensians was all the better considering they had a lack of players and were forced into promoting some players from the second team to fill the squad. Rob Johnson’s outstanding display earned him the man of the match accolade as he epitomised the spirit of the side with an excellent performance. Aireborough face four matches in March, all against sides who sit below them in the league. First up is 8th placed Burley away, a side who they drew 26-26 with earlier in the season. Aireborough will also face lowly Old Modernians, Northallerton and Hessle as they look for maximum points in March.
Fairweather Fear the Drop Horsforth Fairweather continued their slump of results with defeats to JB Celtic and Old Tree leaving the side fighting for survival at the bottom of the league. Fairweather were comprehensively beaten 5-0 at JB Celtic before being beaten 3-1 at home to Old Tree. Fairweather were extremely unlucky to lose to Old Tree who are 4th in the division, having chances aplenty but wasteful in front of goal. Fairweather now face four straight away fixtures in March as they look to snatch some vital points as the season enters the business end. Fairweather face Morley Cricket and Sports, Old Tree, Young Guns and Pudsey Liberal Club on the road, four opponents who site in the top five places in the Leeds Combination Division One. To keep up-to-date with their progress, results, fixtures and match reports are available on the club website; hffc.co.uk.

St Margaret’s face Shadwell United in the penultimate round at Garforth Town FC. 2nd Round---Thorpe United 2-4 St Margaret’s After receiving a bye in the first round, a hattrick from Ollie Armitage and a strike from Aaron Chapman saw St Margaret’s secure a 4-2 away win. 3rd Round--- Leeds City Junior Colts 1-5 St Margaret’s In the third round, Horsforth took early advantage through Max Ryan and despite Leeds City Juniors Colts levelling the scores, St Margaret’s went on to put their opponents to the sword. Ryan notched his second while goals from Ben Hings, Chapman and Sam Baxter sealed the win. Quarter-Finals--- St Margarets 3-0 Hunslet Juniors After a goal less first period against Hunslet Juniors, Horsforth took the lead; A kick from keeper Dan Resendez was assisted by the gusty wind and a glancing header to the feet of Chapman who slotted home to give Horsforth the lead. Late on Horsforth sealed the home win through Baxter. Horsforth's final goal came from a spot kick converted by Chapman.

Yarnbury Angling Club
Yarnbury Angling Club was formed as recently as 2008, rekindling the interest in angling in the Yarnbury area. Once there had been several clubs. Then none for years. Until Adrian Addy decided to pick up where his father Dick had left off some thirty years earlier. Dick had run a club from The Grey Horse. Adrian decided to run a reincarnation from The Old Ball – with an additional connection to Yarnbury Rugby Club due to the number of ex-players joining. The club is for coarse anglers, mainly river fishing. They compete monthly, usually on the first weekend and often on the River Trent. There is no junior section as such, but the club runs two junior competitions each year - with each entrant getting a gift.
Star Skills Sports
Star Skills Sports was set up last year to encourage children of North Leeds to take part in sport, learn the importance of teamwork and develop leadership skills. It truly is a local project for the local community. Star Skills are extremely passionate about keeping children active through organised sport. This had led them to team up with Leeds Carnegie to provide hours of valuable experience for their future PE graduates. In turn the players have dedicated and enthusiastic coaches and a higher than average coach to child ratio, allowing more focus on each child to develop their skills as an individual player and as part of a team.
Yarnbury Angling Club has around 50 members, a good many of whom were at the club’s AGM at The Old Ball on 15 February. Top table, left to right – Craig Stafford (retiring Chairman), Andrew Keegan, Adrian Addy (President and club contact) and Steve Worley. (Photo:Ivor Hughes)

As well as working with local schools (they are on the Council's 'Approved Suppliers List'), Star Skills want to help encourage local children to keep active over the weekends and have recently opened a Saturday Football Centre for young aspiring players aged 8-14. Each two hour session focusses on passing, dribbling, shooting, tackling and positional play. The Saturday centre is based at Weetwood's 3G playing pitches (just by Lawnswood roundabout) every Saturday from 10am12pm and costs £4 a session. To book or to find out more please visit www. starskillssports.co.uk or contact Academy Director, Billy Kirwin on 0794 974 8135 or email billy@starskillssports.co.uk
Yarnbury Yearn for Top Half Yarnbury enjoyed a 100% win record for January as they recorded victories at home to basement club Moortown and struggling Ripon away. Yarnbury beat Moortown convincingly 39-12 before scraping past Ripon 24-22 in a tight contest. Yarnbury were beaten in their first match of this month however, losing 36-20 to third placed Bradford Salem away.
Next up for the Horsforth rugby club is to host fifth place Leondiensian before two trips to Skipton followed by Doncaster Phoenix. Yarnbury currently sit 8th in the Yorkshire Division Two with aspirations to finish in the top half of the table come the end of the season. Some good results on the road in March are sure to keep that target a distinct possibility for the Yarnbury side.

£2000 Raised in Matthew Norman’s Memory Then Matthew Norman, once a pupil at Horsforth School, was aged 18 when the car overturned at high speed near Leeds Bradford Airport. January 2011, following a police chase. Matthew died. Now On 18 February ten local teams competed in a seven-a-side football tournament at King George’s Playing Fields - off Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth. Held in Matthew’s memory.
Organiser Andrew Longden (left) with Adam Cullingworth in support.
Cousin Andrew Longden (pictured) was co-organiser; “Matthew’s death was made even more bitter by the way it was reported. I can’t say more - the precise circumstances are, as we speak, before a court of law. But that was then and now is now. Nothing is going to bring him back. “The family felt the time had come to turn round their grief into something positive for others. This is it. There are two beneficiaries. One is the neo-natal unit at LGI and the other the road safety campaign BRAKE – they gave Matthew’s parents so much support after their loss. “Today’s event has raised £2000 and still counting. Next year we intend to do even better - in May and with more notice.”
Next year’s tournament will be in May. Maybe just as well - some found this year’s like playing on flypaper... (Photos: Ivor Hughes)
