Rawdon Fun Day Roaring Success The Rawdon Fun Day Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers, stallholders, attractions and over 2500 visitors who braved the mud to contribute to the community spirit with true “Yorkshire Grit” and help make our 3rd Rawdon Fun Day a success and raise valuable funds for our charities. Special thanks go to all volunteers, particularly the lads from Progress Group who wired the electrics, the Scouts who put up the beer tent in the very soggy ground, John Penny & Sons for providing the

Stuart Andrew MP

June has been an exciting month for the United Kingdom and it has been wonderful to see celebrations taking place all over the country for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. I had already seen first hand such fantastic community spirit at the Rawdon Fun Day earlier this month and as an MP I have been invited to attend festivities across the constituency celebrating the reign of our Monarch. It is a real honour to visit Jubilee parties in local primary schools, street parties and to see what local businesses have been doing to mark this momentous time in our country's history. It is commendable that communities have come together in these difficult economic times to celebrate in style and I have certainly eaten my fair share of Jubilee cakes. I hope to see such patriotic support continuing into the months of July and August when we all come together to support both our Olympic and Paralympic teams in the forthcoming London 2012 Games. Events will be taking place throughout the country and I look forward in particular tocheering on our Yorkshire athletes and wish them well in their endeavours to do our country proud. As the Olympic Torch passes through Leeds it is impossible not to think that we are, as a nation, experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity people of all ages can enjoy.

Emergency Services on a Roll

Prevention is better, and less messy, than the cure. Fire Service Crew Commander Steve Milne and Police Sergeant Jane Franks were among the emergency services’ representatives on hand at PHGS Otley in March. The victims of the simulated low speed impact were dummies – let’s try and keep it that way.

An exciting new road safety initiative, piloted at an Otley school in March, is shortly to be rolled out in all secondary schools in the northwest Leeds area. The purposefully named “Emergency Services Awareness” day will soon be coming to a school near you. There the ambulance, fire and rescue and police services will be giving a frightening, though valuable, insight into what they have to do when they are called to clear up the mess after a road traffic accident. More importantly, each service will be on hand to offer advice on how not to get yourself into that position in the first place – eg wear your seat belt, use an appropriate baby restraint, observe the speed limit, stay off the mobile phone. It all sounds so easy - until you hear just how many new drivers decide to go another way and end up paying the price. The 999 road show will be at Horsforth High School on 26 June and at Abbey Grange High School on 17 July. Any school wishing further details should contact their local Neighborhood Police Team.

Rarely inspected by British Transport Police, Horsforth Station’s car park has often been a testing ground for creative parking – outside the marked bays, often to an extent that would impede access by the emergency services. In April, Network Rail fenced off around a dozen spaces to facilitate access by heavy machinery during the present works – without anticipating that creative parkers would continue to park outside the bays and alongside the fences. Network Rail are to be congratulated for their tact – rather than have fixed penalties issued, they put

Domestic & Commercial polite notices near and on the offending vehicles. They have since cross-hatched, in yellow, those areas of the car park most frequently abused.

Adel Association May Meeting

First was the lack of school places in and around Adel – a doubly thorny question as the provision of extra places often goes hand in hand with new housing developments. Putting themselves in the firing line were Lesley Savage and Stuart Gosling from LCC. And firing line it was – Adel councillor (and Covered contributor) Barry Anderson had them on the ropes with questions about the planning and demographic assumptions on which their presentation had been based. That led the Association nicely into a presentation and discussion about the shape and purpose of Adel Neighbourhood Forum – a group of 21 residents coming together with a view to developing a Neighbourhood Plan. NPs are the new way for communities to decide the future of the places where they live and work, including school places. And, finally, a wide ranging report from Professor Mark Seaward, who had attended a Leeds Civic Trust meeting on behalf of the Association – where, usefully, Neighbourhood Planning was among the subjects discussed. For further details and dates of forthcoming meetings, visit: www.adelassociation.org.uk

Cllr Barry Anderson Talks The provision of school places in the Adel area was top of the agenda at a recent Community Association meeting. It is a contentious issue and I was delighted that Leeds City Council Education Department accepted my invitation. Lesley Savage and Stuart Gosling from LCC’s Education Planning Department attended. Some constituents think that Councillors are often mouthpieces for the City (or Town) Council – rather like MPs are for their own political parties. Well, I’d like to think that anyone who attended that meeting was left in no doubt that about my opinion of LCC’s medium to long term education planning.

Covered Magazine stand, but also taking account of anticipated new housing developments – which might well soak up any “spare” capacity presently anticipated.

Local Matters

I am firmly of the view that it is essential to ensure that the necessary infrastructure will be in place before housing developments are allowed to proceed. And not just in terms of education but also transport, health, green space, shops, play areas etc. Though, on the subject of education, I have urged the Education Department to make formal objections against planning applications where the property developer’s contribution* to increased education costs would not provide sufficient resources. Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward barryanderson.yourcllr.com

Education in Leeds should have seen from the birth registers four or five years ago that the need *these are calculated in accordance with Section for primary school places would be rising – with 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 immigration from Eastern Europe increasing the need for provision of Catholic education even further. Their closure of other schools in the vicinity, eg Tinshill Primary, hasn’t helped either. Not that pushing the problem out of the area is necessarily the best way to go about it. School places may become just as tight in neighbouring communities. Some Adel residents have already expressed concern about road safety around the two primary schools in Adel itself. Sending children to schools outside the immediate vicinity would mean their having to cross major routes into Leeds centre. Then there is the pride that parents and the Adel community have in the two excellent primary schools already here. Parents will inevitably be demanding the same quality of education, pastoral support and sense of community no matter where their children are placed. School places ran inevitably into the other main topic of discussion on the evening – Neighbourhood Plans. I asked the Education Department to provide residents and representative groups their projections for the future need of school places. I have asked for those projections not only as they

Finance Matters

In this new column Editor Chris Barnham investigates financial issues that might affect the residents of this area. One of the biggest problems facing local people in these troubled times is how they can get a decent return on their money, given the exceptionally low interest rates currently available through the banks. What a lot of people miss is not just the effect on inflation on the value of their savings, but the tax that is applied to all savings which are held outside of a cash ISA. To put it simply, if the interest rate you are receiving after tax has been deducted isn't higher than the rate of inflation then you are losing money. Generally at the moment the only way to achieve these levels of return are by locking money away for a long time, itself quite a risk if inflation rates were to rise in the future. So what are the alternatives? Really it depends on your time scale, your need for liquidity and your willingness to take on a bit of risk in return for the associated returns. You might consider property, bonds and gilts, alternative assets or shares. Each area has its positives and negatives which need weighing up against each other and in regard to your particular personal circumstances. What suits you will often not suit someone else, particularly given different stages of life and tax considerations. No investment strategy is risk-free. But by spreading your savings across different asset classes and with some careful planning you stand a good chance of making a real return, or possibly some decent growth - instead of a guaranteed loss.

Cookridge WI Antiques Evening

Cookridge WI, or Cookridge Crumpets as they prefer to be known, was treated to an evening of antiques expertise from Tennants Auctioneers (Leyburn) valuer and Fine Arts graduate Mark Littler. As a general valuer, Mark was well placed to identify and value a wide range of offerings from the audience. And, as a silver specialist, he also gave a valuable insight into what makes some silver pieces worth more than others – and the history of British silver hallmarks. Though no hidden treasures, there were a few pleasant surprises for some of the audience.

A friend of the family, Alnwick Town Cryer and Toastmaster John Stevens invited and welcomed guests and garden lovers to an NGS garden open day at a property in Blackwood Rise, Cookridge, on Sunday 10 June – a day not quite as damp as last year’s. Each year, over 3700 NGS registered gardens welcome around 750,000 guests and raise in excess of £2.5 million for charities. All such days are booked long in advance – to find other participating gardens and their dates visit ngs.org.uk

St. Margaret’s C of E Primary School held their Jubilee Fair recently at St Margaret’s Church Hall. Covered arrived early in the day before the event got into full flow and managed to catch some of the organisers for a photo. Over 250 adults visited the fair along with countless children, helping to raise a total of £2425 which will be going towards interactive white boards for school. Special thanks to Town Street Tavern who provided the food on the day – the burgers went down particularly well!

Whether or not you participated in any of the Jubilee celebrations, there is no denying that they were a wonderful display of unity and community. It was wonderful to see – whole streets partying together, strangers striking up friendships with each other… These days it doesn’t happen that often, does it? We don’t generally talk to strangers. We have become an isolated society with everyone doing their ‘own thing’, not wanting to share their secrets of success in case anyone pinches their idea. With people not wanting to ask for help when they need it, because our sort of society sees it as a sign of weakness. But the uplifting feeling generated by the togetherness of the Jubilee celebrations are an illustration of how wonderful it is to share things. The word TEAM stands for Together Everyone Achieves More. Doesn’t that say it all? And it is SO true! If you need help ask for it – there will be someone out there with the solution. If you have no one to share things with, join a club, take an evening class, dance lessons. And speak to people – a stranger even – he or she might even be the one you’ve been waiting for! To learn more about overcoming life’s challenges visit Susan’s website: www. susanharpertodd.com

Are you an inspirational Local lady? Do you know of a local woman of achievement? Maybe you’ve set up a successful club or society, or grasped a challenge with both hands. We’re looking for Local Ladies with a story to feature in future editions of Covered so please let us know your story!

Businesses - Enter Your Bloomin’ Displays Now!

Covered remains committed to attending, supporting and reporting local news and events. So, in that vein, we’ve decided to run an occasional feature about the job market in the area – specific jobs, jobs in the voluntary sector, jobs in general and any training or other resources that might be available. And of course carry advertisements from employers or training establishments looking for recruits. To get the ball rolling, we have two advertisements in this issue. The first is a repeat of our own, for telesales representatives. The second is for Town Garage who are looking for a vehicle technician/MOT tester to work from their service garage in Horsforth. Why go local? Well, and of course within the bounds equal opportunities, employees in the locality have two obvious advantages – attendance far less likely to be affected by transport disruption and an understanding of the community being served. Right now, we would like to hear from any voluntary sector organisations looking for helpers and about anything bearing on the local job market. Any other suggested topics will be most welcome.

Message From Horsforth Town Council June continues as a month full of celebration and closes with Horsforth Gala on Saturday 30th. The “In Bloom” judges will be in Horsforth in the middle of the month, for the final decisions on the Town’s efforts in this year’s competition. By that time the work on the new Diamond Jubilee Garden (outside the Old Library) will have started, and the Mosaic work of our young people will be on display. So we will be asking everyone, residents and business people alike, to make every effort to keep the town as spick and span as possible. The work of the Council carries on throughout the summer. One change will be the Environment and Community Committees sitting as one, to help the Council work in a better way for all residents. Another change is the updated website – please visit and let us know what you think. A further improvement is in the new technology that the Town Clerk and his assistant are now able to use. This allows them to produce leaflets and flyers in house, as well as the quarterly “Horsforth Matters”. Last month saw the retirement of one of Horsforth’s good citizens. Barbara McLaren has retired after 15 years as manager of Horsforth’s Live at Home Scheme. We thank her for all her good work and wish her well in her retirement and welcome Tracy, her replacement. Best wishes for the Summer. Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council.

Guiseley in Nethermoor Upgrades

Adel Bowls In Action Adel Bowls club were in action as they hosted North Leeds Bowls Club in June at Adel sports club.

Despite just missing out on promotion from the Blue Square Bet North, Guiseley AFC is embarking on an ambitious refurbishment of their Nethermoor Park ground during the summer. The primary aim of which is to improve the facilities for spectators whilst increasing the capacity of the ground to 4000.

The weather held off for the evening fixture as the baby blue colours of Adel battled the dark green of the visiting North Leeds side. The competitors showcased an incredible blend of skill and accuracy as four matches were played concurrently. Now and then the crossing paths of the woods would see a collision between games, as the points were beginning to rack up for both sides. Bowls has been regarded as a popular pastime in Adel since the pavilion was built in back in the 1960s. The same pavilion remains today, hosting great camaraderie between the club’s members on a regular basis. Adel plays on Tuesday evenings from 6.45, Thursday afternoons from 1.30 and Saturday afternoons from 2.30. Furthermore, Adel Bowls Club has sessions for social bowling on Monday afternoons where players can get their hands on the woods and practice their aim and angles on the green.

The first four encounters get under way as Adel host North Leeds (Photo: Ivor Hughes)

Adel Bowls Club Members (Photo: Ivor Hughes)

Amongst the developments, capacity of the area that surrounds the pitch and accommodates the vast majority of spectators is to be increased with covered terraces planned behind each goal subject to planning permission. The current dugouts are also being replaced with the latest designs which are manufactured from clear Perspex thereby further enhancing the spectator viewing experience.

As a result of all this activity the Lions have scheduled just two pre-season friendly games at Nethermoor, both of which are against Football League opposition. League One play-off finalists Huddersfield Town provide the first test on Saturday 21st July (3:00pm) with a revamped Bradford City following hot on their heels on Wednesday 1st August (7:45pm). Both Huddersfield and Bradford are sending their first team squads which should provide an early opportunity for the Lions to assess their progress ahead of the new Blue Square Bet North season.

Adel C.C. 1st XI will need to prove that they sit in a false position at present and will be desperate to put together a string of victories to help them shoot back up the table. Set within the Adel Sports Club grounds, the fantastic pitch is the envy of many clubs in the region and players at the club are privy to some of the best facilities around.

The upgrades have been prompted by several factors including an increase in crowds over the last two seasons when the team has been vying for promotion to the Blue Square Bet Premier and also by the need to bring the facilities up to the latest standards.

WIMBLEDON FORTNIGHT Adel C.C. junior clips the ball away for some valuable runs (Photo: Ivor Hughes)

Adel are general regarded as one of the best clubs in north Leeds, and certainly one of the most successful, with the 1st XI having won the AireWharfe 1st Division three times in recent years.

Cricket is seen as one of the biggest sports, or a wide range, that Adel have and as a result the sport is play seven days a week most weeks throughout summer. Adel has four senior sides and a junior setup to be extremely proud of [Pictured.]

However, this season has not started well for the club who are without a win from their opening eight matches of the new season, something they hope doesn’t continue.

Adel welcomes the arrival of any new players or those who want to be involved at the club with open arms and urge interested parties to contact the club at adelcc@hotmail.co.uk

St Margaret’s Ready for End of Season Tournament

Horsforth CCs New Junior Pitch

The 2011-12 football season ends for Horsforth St. Margaret’s Junior Football Club with its 13th Annual Tournament in June. The tournament promises to be the clubs biggest yet and links up with the West Riding County FA to re-launch the Respect Campaign.

Horsforth CC have been busy in the winter months, creating a second pitch on the King George's Field for the use of their junior teams including the girls section. There have been several matches played on the new pitch which is already proving to be a valuable asset to the club in such a short period of time.

It’s been an impeccable year for the club as they regained Charter Standard Club Status and are now one of the biggest junior football clubs in West Yorkshire. The under-9 Stallions, under-10 Colts, under-12 Stallions, under-13 Earthquakes and under-15A teams all won their respective leagues. However, under-13 Earthquakes, the under-15 Colts and the under-10 girls all experience the heartbreak of narrow cup final defeats. The success of the youth system of the club has continued to grow, with over 40 under-6 ‘Dribblers’ playing on Sunday mornings with a heavy emphasis on fun, learning skills and enjoyment.

Horsforth St Margaret’s Under-10 girls Roosters make full use of the sloped pitch as they cross the Akkies line for a decisive try. (Photo: Ivor Hughes)

Roosters Raid Akkies For First Win

At the other end of the spectrum, the under-18 team plan to go open age next season, signalling the return of Horsforth St. Margaret’s AFC. If you’re interested in joining the team then contact team manager Neil Bellfield on 01132586329 or 07989962359. For more information about the club visit our website hsmafc.com

Horsforth St Margaret’s Under 9 Stallions.

Yeadon Sailing Club was awarded the Volvo RYA Champion Club status plaque and flag at the clubs’ recent Open Day which was day basked in sunshine.

The club also had their Open Day before the presentation, inviting the local community to ‘come along and have a go’ at sailing. Provided with basic training by the new coaches, the well represented day saw the new comers take to the lake in the morning stages in beautiful weather conditions.

Leeds Akkies Rugby League side suffered a 24-18 home defeat to bottom of the table Rotherham Roosters.

The girls’ team opened their fixtures in the North Yorkshire Girls Friendly League with a match against Pannal on the same pitch. The girls narrowly losing by one run in an encouraging display which they will be keen to build on as the season progresses. The girls section still has several vacancies and anyone wishing to join is invited to attend practice which takes place on Friday evenings at 6:30pm. For more information on the girls section, contact John Pickford; 0113 2588 887. Horsforth would like to register its thanks to Green Leeds, the Horsforth Parish Council, the local schools and the community for their support to get this new venture and pitch up and running in what is proving to be a huge benefit to the club.

Akkies have won once in their opening five matches this season and would have been hoping to register their second in the Yorkshire Men’s RL Group 4 Division.

Yeadon Champion Sailing Club

The award is given to clubs who show exceptional commitment to deliver safe, effective racing and training in recognised sailing classes. Just 10% of sailing clubs across the U.K are awarded the champion club status and Yeadon can be proud to fly the flag in honour of their achievements.

41

The home side started brightly and with the advantage of playing downhill in the first-half, they looked to be in contention to collect the two points.

Yeadon Sailing club members celebrate being awarded Volvo Champion Club Status (Photo: Jake Harvey)

that many will never have attempted. Following the early sessions there was a youth race in the early afternoon before Club Commodore Tim Burnett was presented with their Volvo award on behalf of Yeadon Sailing Club.

The brilliant Open Day and presentation saw the swift arrival of champagne and nibbles before The fantastic atmosphere around the club was clear rounding off the action packed day with the with everybody welcome to try their hand at a sport weekend racing for the club members.

Aerial, Satellites & Solar

However, the second-half’s disadvantage of uphill proved to be catastrophic for Akkies as the Roosters gained the ascendancy, their legs seemingly a lot fresher than the hosts as the game approached the latter stages. A disappointing defeat but much came down to Akkies literally having an ‘uphill task’ in the second period. Next up for the rugby league side is a trip to top of the table Scarborough Pirates with Akkies hoping to end their run of four defeats with a surprise victory over the side that so far hold a 100% record this campaign.
