The past month proved to be the most satisfying for the magazine since its conception early in 2011. I remember attending Horsforth Gala that year, when Covered magazine was the new kid on the block. Though known to some, we had yet to forge the good working relationships we now enjoy with authorities such as all the emergency services, schools, Leeds City Council (and its councillors), community associations, sports clubs and a whole raft of organisations in the voluntary sector. Let’s just say that I felt a lot more at ease at this year’s Gala than I did last year.

Crag House Farm Open Day Crag House Farm, Otley Old Road, Cookridge is home to Caring For Life – a Christian inspired charitable organisation offering on-site sheltered housing for sixteen adults, extensive support for others living out in the community and a wide range of therapeutic daytime projects for vulnerable adults – predominantly in art and rural activities. Among their fundraising activities they have a cafe, farm shop and garden centre. At their annual open day on 16 June there were more country craft and produce displays than might be found at some country shows.

Crag House Farm is such a wonderful facility that Covered just doesn’t have the space to do justice to both the open day and the organisation itself. So, enjoy the pictures – we’ll be writing more about their work in a future issue.

Horsforth in Bloom Judged

Leeds in Bloom judges evaluated Horsfoth’s efforts in July, though the results won’t be announced until September.

Despite Horsforth’s long history of successes in the awards, one Horsforth businessman has expressed reservations about the judging criteria.

Past commendation winner Garth KirstenLandman, manager of Town Street Tavern; “We always do what we can to make the beer garden more appealing – potted geraniums, hanging baskets – that kind of thing. But head office has no budget for it, so we have to fund it and do all the work ourselves.

The Safe and Sustainable Review into Children’s Congenital Cardiac Services has come to a close this month at a meeting which I attended in London. Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund has been fighting a very strong campaign to save the Leeds Unit from closure. Over the course of the campaign many of us in Parliament have raised grave concerns over the legitimacy of the Review with the Secretary of State for Health and Sir Neil McKay, the Chair of the JCPCT.

“I know that some local businesses buy in professional gardening services. While they deserve recognition, I think that Leeds in Bloom should give a little more credit to those of us who do it all themselves.”

I was therefore very disappointed to hear that the Leeds Unit has not been designated as a children’s heart surgery unit and will therefore close. This is a bitter disappointment to the parents, children and staff at the LGI who have campaigned tirelessly over the past year to save this valuable resource and I believe raises some very serious questions about the criteria which the Review has used to come to its decision.

Following the announcement I was able to raise this with Ministers from the Department of Health and during a Parliamentary Question session it was confirmed an independent body will assess the outcome of the review, look at the process and make sure it was carried out correctly.

The Children’s Heart Surgery Unit in Leeds provides a vital service for people living in our area and I will continue to do all I can to make sure that it stays open.

Adel Historical Society’s latest History Play was attended by Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Gordon Tollefson. Also pictured are community activists Cllr Barry Anderson, playwright and actress Val Crompton and vicar of St John’s, Rev Ian White.

Busier Than Ever in Adel Adel has a small yet vibrant community. And, although there always seems to be plenty happening, the last weekend in June was especially busy. Friday and Saturday nights 22 and 23 June saw performances of Adel Historical Society’s latest history play in St John’s Church. Co-author and actor Val Crompton (pictured) always includes themes or characters important to Adel’s own long history. Her rendition included reference to Pilot Officer Charles Alec Bird, killed in action over Cirencester in 1940 and buried in a civilian grave at in St John’s.

Sunday 24 was doubly festive at St John’s. First, it is their patronal saint’s day – always a high point in the calendar. And, apart from special services, the church also took the opportunity of holding an extra Jubilee party in the adjacent Old Stables building.

The decision about when to retire is one of the biggest that you will ever make, especially if you happen to be at that stage of your life right now.

The usual questions about how best to fund your well-earned leisure are more acute now than they have been in living memory. Being aware of the implications of different options is more crucial than ever.

A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

For those with final-salary schemes it may be a case of whether to accept an offer to retire early. For the majority, though, the question is whether this is a good time to cash in their pensions - and how best to turn this money into an income.

Annuity rates depend on long-term gilt returns, the providers themselves and life expectancy. Market volatility means that the pot itself may have fallen a bit recently, but this may not be the main driver of how much you will actually receive. Gilt yields being at historic lows may have a bigger effect, as may a change in your personal health or general medical advancements. From the end of this year it will also be illegal for annuity providers to discriminate based on gender. This will almost certainly lead to a considerable fall in annuity rates for men, who previously “benefited” from shorter life expectancy.

Anyone thinking of retiring needs to look into their options carefully and make an informed decision.

A bit of time spent now will stay with you for the rest of your life, and that itself might be the best investment you’ll ever make.

James Farrell – Swinging in the Rain Friends of Hall Park was formed in 1995. Working in conjunction with LCC and with sponsorship from local organisations, they have been instrumental in the provision of the skateboard park, new children’s and disabled playgrounds, renovation of the bandstand and Japanese garden and the provision of new bins, benches and flower gardens.

They have also secured funding for five concerts this year. The most recent was on 8 July – a Jubilee Prom also marking the 80th anniversary of William Mathieson’s donation of the park to the people of Horsforth. With a audience undistracted by the Wimbledon finals, and undeterred by the showers, the James Farrell Concert Band performed a range of songs from the screen in addition to more

traditional proms music.

The next concerts are Drighlington Brass Band on 29 July, Bradford Metropolitan Concert Band on 19 August and Yorkshire Urquhart Travel Band on 2 September – all from 2.30 to 4.30. Further information from secretary Julie Wadsworth jules. wadsworth@ntlworld.com

Lord Mayor Opens Courtyard Café in Horsforth On Saturday 7 July the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Ann Castle, spent a full hour chatting with staff, volunteers, customers and carers at Courtyard Café, Town Street, Horsforth, before the official opening.

Courtyard Café is a new community facility run by Creative Support, a Manchester based company with charitable status providing care and support for vulnerable adults. The café provides work opportunities for local people with learning difficulties and aims to support other local enterprises and engage with the local community.

It is supported by Leeds City Council.

In her opening speech, Cllr Castle explained how a recent open day in LCC Chambers had made councillors more aware of the needs of, and prejudices against, vulnerable adults.

She applauded Courtyard Café as a valuable community resource. The sheer joy on the faces of the volunteers, throughout the morning, underlined her message.

Trinity Goes Global Then and now From its modest start as a (Catholic) Teacher Training College, Leeds Trinity has come a long way and established itself as a fully fledged University College with 3000 undergraduates and selfconferring status. In other words, Trinity no longer has to have its syllabus, content or degrees ratified by an external authority (eg the Universities of Bradford or Leeds).

The last hurdle stopping Trinity calling itself a university, rather than university college, has recently been removed - the requirement to have at least 4000 students has been cut to 1000. So, before the end of the year - hopefully in time for the next term - Trinity All Saints College of the 1960s will have matured into Leeds Trinity University. In the meantime, last month, Trinity found itself the venue for a religious and academic conference of truly international significance.

Leeds Trinity Principal, Professor Freda Bridge, greets Cardinal Filoni on arrival on Thursday. The sheltering hand is that of College Chaplain, Father Paul Grogan. Cardinal Filoni delivered the third of four keynote speeches during the V2 Conference.

Vatican II – fifty years on Fifty years ago Pope John XIII commenced a series of conferences dedicated to the subjects of how the whole of the Catholic Church should move with the times – both internally and externally. Pope Paul VI closed the series in 1965. Collectively, it became known as Vatican II – The New Evangelization.

These monks from Bradford were among the conference delegates.

They work among substance abuse, deprivation and prostitution among a (sometimes) tense multicultural society. Might they have been able to teach other delegates a thing or two?

At the end of June some 200 delegates worldwide converged at Trinity to re-evaluate V2 – where the church had gone and where it was going. More than a score of eminent academics, clergy and lay practitioners from six continents led the debate during nine formal seminars over three days.

Delegates also spent two long periods in syndicate, debating fifty theological papers generated among themselves.

And that’s not all ...

During the conference, news broke that Pope Benedict XVI had promoted and appointed Arthur Roche, Bishop of Leeds, to Archbishop and an important position in The Vatican. Trinity will sadly miss the guiding hand of their Chair of The Board, though are thrilled for the new Archbishop. Some of their 1000 students were also being thrilled at the time - or otherwise - when their final results were posted in the foyer.

As I write, Parliament is about to rise for the summer recess and like most MPs I will heading back to my constituency. Though parliament is not in session, working and campaigning for my constituents most certainly continues!

I will continue to fight the flawed decision by the Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts to close the Leeds Children’s Heart Unit, a decision which fails to follow the logic of the drive to larger, safer units.

I will also be continuing to work with Wharfedale & Airedale Review Development (WARD) to set up an Aireborough Neighbourhood Forum and to Natasha Perdue, Jack Oliver and Claire Cashmore campaign against loss of greenbelt land.

I wish them and all the Team GB Olympic and Paralympic contenders the very best of luck. I will I was delighted to welcome the success of years of also be cheering on Leeds Rhinos at the Challenge campaigning for better public transport for Leeds, Cup Final at Wembley. Leeds on Dogs Many readers have contributed to an online debate over a ‘Dogs on Leads’ campaign started in our area by Horsforth resident Nicky Tinsley and focusing on Hall Park. The campaign is now looking at how best to convince Leeds City Council to take action to keep aggressive or uncontrolled dogs in check.

But what about responsible owners who keep their dogs under control? Taking the dog for a walk in the park and throwing a ball for them to fetch is a joy for both. Should their dog remained leashed because of an irresponsible minority?

Perhaps education is an answer – 88% of our respondents have never seen a dog warden in a park. Should offenders be ticketed and, ultimately, ordered to keep their dogs leashed and/or muzzled?

Or might the Neighbourhood Policing Team add the issue to their existing repertoire to deter other types of crime and anti-social behaviour?

The campaign is something that LCC should not ignore, not with 60% fearful of the behaviour of dogs in parks.

The very high rain fall in June and July will have washed away most of the fertilizers in your soil, so now is a good time to give your plants a boost.

Using either an organic fertilizer such a blood fish or bone, alternatively a chemical fertilizer such as Growmore. Which ever option you choose, sprinkle it lightly around your plants and hoe it in to the give the roots an immediate boost.

Your lawns will have also suffered in the wet, although if there are any damp or soggy areas, start by letting air into the roots and improving the drainage. Using your garden fork, press down hard every six inches to a minimum depth of four inches – then apply a lawn feed as directed.

Slugs and snails are the number one menace at the moment, as they are thoroughly enjoying our current weather. So take action to protect your precious plants with either blue pellets, or egg shell, coffee grounds, grit, copper tape – or what ever works for you.

The attacks on soft fruit by pigeons and other large birds has increased dramatically this year, which means you need to place anti bird net over all your bushes and ground crops to ensure you have something to eat at harvest time.

Horsforth Gala Bright sunshine awaited the procession along Town Street at 12.15 but, sadly, did not stay throughout the whole event. A thirty minute downpour at 2.15 was followed by another at 4.45.

Still, and with the number of stalls and sideshows at its highest in recent years, those stallholders and visitors who managed to dodge the showers - or endure them - made the day yet another Jubilee oriented special.

Special thanks must go to all volunteers and voluntary organisations represented on the day. And thanks to Leader of Horsforth Council Jude Arbuckle for, among other things, officiating in the fancy dress competition. WEA – Celebrating 10 Years on the Road A group of students from the Leeds Branch of the Worker’s Educational Association has just returned from a very enjoyable study tour of Northumberland.

This is the 10th year that they have organised such a tour.

The original suggestion for study tours came from one of their most popular lecturers, Ainsley Hepburn, a social historian who moved to the south of England.

The Leeds Branch was sorry to lose her, so she suggested that Yorkshire students might benefit from visiting places of interest in the south. Ainsley worked hard to draw up an interesting programme for the 5 day visit, visiting venues and inspecting accommodation.

That visit, and the three years’ following, were wonderful opportunities for Yorkshire folk to visit a wide range of stately homes, estates, gardens, galleries and cathedrals in the south, including the homes of Winston Churchill, Kipling, Virginia Woolf and Charles Darwin.

Then Ainsley returned to Leeds to give a series of lectures called ‘Standing in Their Shoes’ - about the lives and conditions of the people who worked in the industrial north. Coach trips were organised to various industrial Museums in Sheffield, Manchester and the Waterways Museum in Goole. Then three years visiting the stately homes and religious foundations of Yorkshire and, last year, off to Derbyshire to do likewise.

This year it was Northumberland. There are still places left that Leeds WEA should like to visit, but who knows?

The distinct threat of an imminent downpour at Horsforth Gala inevitably caused many to return to their cars for shelter or rainwear. Around half a dozen found more than they were looking for – parking tickets from LCC, some with the ink barely dry (though not for long). This visitor’s spirits were dampened just before everyone else was – his argument that the ticket was unjust got him nowhere.

Covered was hoping that the apparent absence of tickets during most of Horsforth’s earlier Jubilee in the Park event suggested that LCC had adopted a lighter touch. How wrong we were. Charity and community events in the park and in the adjacent church hall are still open season for LCC’s own teams of fundraisers.

Horsforth events during June have certainly showcased the town. Thank you to everyone who took part in or helped both in the successful Gala, (despite the efforts of the weather to dampen spirits) and of course, the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

July heralds Bands in the Park, organised by the Friends of Hall Park and supported by the Town Council, and the Evening of Music in St Margaret’s Hall. We also await the next visit from the judges for the Horsforth in Bloom competition. With the continuing help of the volunteers and residents to keep Horsforth both tidy and colourful, we look forward to a favourable response from the Judges.

The Jubilee Garden, sited outside the Old Library, is now officially open.

The work of the Council continues. The combined Environment and Community Committee will meet quarterly. The Public Safety Committee will meet earlier on the same evening as the Finance Committee. The revamped Horsforth website is now up and running with current information and minutes of meetings. Also the latest edition of Horsforth Matters is ready for delivery – this is the new in-house edition. Thanks go to the Town Clerk and his Assistant for their efforts. One of Horsforth’s Good Citizens has received further recognition of her dedication and voluntary work. Congratulations to Hilary Taylor who received one of the highest awards to the laity, the Pro Ecclesia Papal medal, from the Pope, for her work in the community.

After photographing Hall Park CC and the adjacent concert, our photographer spotted this calling card left by one proud dog owner, next to a park bench. Not seeing a dog waste bin, he left it.

Might LCC’s Civil Enforcement Officers be more gainfully employed by extending their patrol beyond Fink Hill Car Park and into the park itself?

The Town Council is looking to the future with the plans for Quality Status and the legal Power of Competence. These will go to helping the Council receive more money and then provide more services for Horsforth. More of this later.

Abbey Inn Beer Festival

Around 2000 visitors sampled a total of 100 draught beers during the three day beer festival on 29 June to 1 July at Abbey Inn, Pollard Lane, Newlay LS13. They not only enjoyed the beer, but also live entertainment in the street and in the marquee – including Morris dancing lessons for those brave enough to have a go.

Abbey Inn is highly accredited by CAMRA and is committed to serving real ale. So, there’s always a good range of real ales if you missed the festival itself.

Abbey Inn’s next big event will be on bonfire night itself, Monday 5 November – with a large bonfire and fireworks display, of course.

Yarnbury RFC Goes Soft(ball)

Although Yarnbury’s core business is of course rugby union, the clubhouse and grounds are a valuable recourse to other sports and social gatherings. One such sports club is Leeds Softball Association, which plays most of its matches at Yarnbury on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6.30 onward.

Apart from LSA’s own league and cup fixtures, Yarnbury RFC was also host to Leeds Tournament 2012 on 23 and 24 June. As much social as competitive, such tournaments are run nationwide.

Entry to the Leeds Tournament, like others elsewhere, was by open application rather than qualification. So, around 20 teams from around UK were competing that weekend.

Softball is, if you like, a more sociable version of baseball – though no less competitive. A much larger ball is delivered slowly and underarm.

Teams of ten are five male and five female. From there the rules seem to become very complicated.

LSA has 21 corporate and independent teams, competing between May and August and welcomes newcomers. If you want to go along to watch, or might be interested in joining or entering a team, then visit leedssoftball.org

Hall Park Give Horsforth Twenty20 Vision Horsforth Hall Park CC holds the bragging rights after they beat rivals Horsforth CC in dramatic fashion to win the league at their Hall Park pitch.

Horsforth CC set a target of 105 in the Headingley & District Twenty20 Division 1 but it was Hall Park who bagged the points to take them to the top of the table. The hosts nicked the victory with just two balls to spare as they reached 106 for 9 wickets after 19.4 overs!

Horsforth CC, who sit mid-table, were hoping to inflict defeat on Hall Park for the first time in the Twenty20 league and restrict their neighbours from winning the Division, but the resilient champions held strong and secured the title with a sweet derby triumph.

The roles have been completely reversed this season, Horsforth CC won the division in 2011 with Hall Park taking 5th and in 2012 the two sides have swapped positions.

The two sides will face each other again in August as Horsforth look to settle to score in Division C after Hall Park beat them by four runs in June.

Assassin Fires Up The Rankings Table Yorkshire and Rawdon’s Martin Atkins has continued his fine form in the past two months, with consistent progression to the later stages of BDO darts competitions. ‘The Assassin’ climbed up to World Number 18 in the latest rankings following a string of good tournaments.

Winning both the pairs and the singles Yorkshire qualifiers he was Yorkshire’s sole representative in the Gold Cup where he reached the semi-finals in the men’s singles. Together with partner John Walton he also reached the semi-finals of the men’s pairs at the Swiss Open.

Atkins, who has his eyes firmly on getting to the 2013 Lakeside, will have done his chances no harm whatsoever, particularly by reaching the England Open last 16 where 1024 competed for the men’s singles title.

Coming up in August is the Belgium Open followed by the British Open which takes place in Bridlington.

Kittrick Sick of Bridesmaid’s Curse

Guiseley manager Steve Kittrick is determined his side will grab the promotion they’ve been so close to securing as they go into the Blue Square North 2012/13 season.

Fairweather Awards Horsforth Fairweather endured a tough and often arduous season as they battled to avoid relegation and were rewarded at the club’s end of season awards night held at the Bridge pub in Horsforth.

The night’s top gong went to full-back Dean Herron who claimed Player of the Year with consistent high level performances throughout the campaign.

Striker Anthony Smith picked up Most Improved Player., nominated for by the rest of the squad while he was also Top Goalscorer for the year with a total of 10 goals. Goal of the season went to Dave Scott who only joined the team late in the season, scored three in three appearances and will be a valuable asset to the side for the upcoming season.

The last award of the night went to club stalwart Lee Monaghan, who after 21 years, 481 games and 194 goals for the club was awarded with the Manager’s Trophy for Club Servant of the Year.

The Lions who have suffered agonising play-off defeats in successive years pushed league winners Hyde United all the way last season before being knocked-out in extra-time of a play-off semi-final against Nuneaton. Kittrick spoke of the torrid playoff defeat; “I had to accept a hideous trophy in front of 1,000 people. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever held in my hands and it made me feel like I never want to be there again. I’ve told the lads I don’t want to be in that position ever again. Nobody wants to be bridesmaid more than twice.”

The Nethermoor outfit are back in pre-season ahead of the new campaign and have experienced somewhat of a squad overhaul during the summer months. The Lions boss said; “We’ve gone for a change of tact. We decided to change and freshen things up a bit in the squad. We’ll be stronger this year, we’ve got some young legs and hopefully we’ll be there or there about come the end of the season.”

Guiseley will play just two home friendlies in preseason but will be hoping to attract the crowds when they face Huddersfield and Bradford at Nethermoor Park.

Kittrick spoke about the desire to keep the fans flooding through the gates; “We’ll play the same brand of football as last year and go out to entertain.

Huddersfield and Bradford aren’t important games to win but obviously it’d be nice to get a result.

We’re just invites to the party and hoping to spoil it.”

Guiseley start the new season with a horrid journey to Histon FC in Cambridge before back-toback home games against Droylsden and play-off finalists Gainsborough Trinity.

Sanderson takes aim

Sanderson Set to Compete in PTCs

Olympic Torch Relay Pudsey’s Ben Cropper etched his name into the history books when he carried the Olympic Torch as it past through our region. Ben, 21, transported the flame for a leg in Bradford cheered on by hundreds who flooded the streets to see the relay in action. The recent graduate from Leeds Trinity University College suffered heartache at first when he was offered the chance but received the e-mail too late and had his place revoked. However, after a close friend nominated him again with an inspirational story, Ben was offered a lifeline.

Ben can now claim to hold a piece of history with his Olympic Torch taking pride of place at his home and will forever remember the part he played in the Olympic Games as they return to London for the first time in 64 years.

“It was a real honour to carry the Olympic Torch.

Until I had carried it I hadn’t realised that the excitement ahead of the games was so widespread.

I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me to achieve such a feat, none more so than Carol Russell who submitted the successful nomination, much to my surprise.”

Sports fanatic Ben will now head down to several events in London to watch some of world’s best in action in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games; “I can’t wait, since I carried the torch I’ve been counting down the days. Fingers crossed now that Team GB enjoys great success and that we host the best Olympics to date.”

Cookridge snooker player Sanderson Lam will pit himself against professional snooker players after entering UKPTC Event 2. The PTC events allow amateur snooker players, such as Sanderson, to play against the top players in the world if they progress through the amateur qualifying stages.

Last year, Sanderson played the two-time World Snooker Champion Mark Williams, in a match which was broadcast live on Eurosport and he will once again be aiming to reach the latter stages of a tournament to play one of the senior players on the main snooker tour. The UKPTC Event 2 will take place at the South West Snooker Academy in Gloucester between August 8th and 12th.
