Yeadon’s Young Olympians Leeds City Council, under the incarnation of Aireborough Extended Services, laid on an extensive series of educational, recreational and sporting activities in July and August for youngsters in Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon. The series of events culminated on Wednesday 22 August at Yeadon Westfield Infant School. The relay race, part of the Silly Olympics, went better for the teams on the day than it had done for Britain’s Olympians proper. The instructor substituted batons with “high fives” – less easy to fumble or drop.

From the 1st Saturday of the October, Horsforth will boast a regular farmers market to add extra value to its already popular Town Street.
The Farmers Market is organised as part of Hope in Horsforth, a fortnight organised by Horsforth Churches together to bring people together to celebrate messages, actions and stories of hope. Early October is traditional harvest time and the farmers market is part of a bigger event called Harvesting Hope which seeks to help us as a community ‘celebrate creation and how we can share it.’ There will also be a market place of ideas and projects which inspire to that aim, a café area where several local people who will be interviewed to share short stories of hope.

Cookridge Fire Station Open Day or is it Closure? Cookridge Fire Station held its annual open day on Sunday 2 September. Hundreds of visiting families were treated to expert displays from a wide range of displays. West Yorkshire Fire Services showed you exactly how to deal with domestic fires, most spectacularly that of a chip pan. Or, to be more specific, how not to. Plus demonstrations of other rescue equipment underground, on the ground and high rise.

Their destination was towards Skipton, where 47 guests enjoyed lunch and afternoon dance. Horsforth Live at Home scheme is an independent charity running coffee mornings and indoor bowls, sandwiches and dances, shopping days, lunch clubs, coach trips and holidays. This is the time to prepare for winter, as the autumn nights become colder and the sunsets even earlier. Your bedding plants which have looked so bright will now be starting to fade and go to seed. So take this opportunity to remove them, fork over the bed and sprinkle some Growmore or fish blood and bone to revitalise the ground. In this space you can now plant a range of daffodils and crocus, together with either wall flowers or winter pansies and violas. This also applies to large containers, which can look spectacular in the spring if planted with layers of bulbs to flower in succession.
In the vegetable garden, start to dig over any ground as it becomes vacant - to clear the weeds which have grown faster than anything this year. Over wintering onions are available for planting now, to produce an early crop in the spring. Savoy cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts and other winter greens should be protected from birds, and slugs, to ensure your harvest over the winter. Perhaps you purchased a budget model? Fitting more memory (RAM) will give your machine new legs. Cost £20-£40 Have you ever noticed that there’s never an instruction manual telling you how to look after Windows? Whether it’s XP, Vista or 7, Windows needs attention to keep it running efficiently, but the retailers, manufacturers and Microsoft don’t bother to tell you this. They rely on you becoming frustrated with a slow computer and buying a new one. They want you to think of your computer as just another domestic appliance, like a fridge. If it doesn’t work how you want, you buy another. This is like buying a new car because the oil needs changing. Good for the retailers, bad for your pocket. Learning a little about servicing Windows is a sound investment, but if technical stuff is not your thing, do what you do with your car – have it serviced, at least once a year, and preferably every six months. POTENTIAL CLOSURE OF COOKRIDGE FIRE STATION Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward barryanderson.yourcllr.com I was recently advised in a press release from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority that, at their September meeting, they are due to discuss the potential closure of Cookridge Fire Station and merging it with the Moortown station at a location somewhere between the two. Based on the documentation prepared by WYFRA, a summary of the current situation is given under. Operational incidents in both areas combined have reduced by 26%, and house fires by 21%, since 2006/7. Cookridge and Moortown each have one fire engine which is continually on standby with a crew of five. Both have low operational activity levels with Cookridge being used just 4.7% of the time. Fire Response Units are being used in the Leeds area to deal with smaller fires and thus this frees their remaining fire engines to deal with more serious incidents. During 2011/12, 87% of incidents were dealt with by one fire engine. The predicted new emergency response times will remain within the acceptable risk category in the Fire Authority’s planning assumptions. They will continue to provide targeted community safety and risk reduction activities. The area covered by Cookridge Fire Station is currently classified as medium risk. The alternative location though not yet chosen is “ideally in north Leeds approximately two miles from Cookridge and Moortown - between the two existing fire stations and in the area of the ring road in Weetwood.” Whatever decision is made it is important that the safety of residemts served by Cookridge Fire Station are not put at additional risk. Or, exceptionally, any increase in risk needs to be properly mitigated. It is also important that all the facts are laid before local residents in a clear and concise manner and that the consultation is meaningful and not just a tick box exercise because it is expected of the Fire Authority. I shall of course be keeping in close touch with WYFRA and be keeping residents informed. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns or questions in the meantime.

Cookridge Horticultural Society Flower Show Despite our wettest summer ever, or perhaps because of it, Cookridge Flower Show saw a bumper crop of entries in its annual flower show on 8 September. Their 69th annual show, it was also the 7th time Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, had been invited to award the prizes; “ I’m delighted to have been invited again. I would like vto pay credit to the efforts of all entrants, and the Socity itself. I am particularly impressed with the way in which the Society has engaged with local schoolchildren.” Equally impressed was blogger “Mrs Hawkins”, learning support assistant at Cookridge Primary School and “part time gardener”. Rawdon resident David Stone MBE, may not have been a name on everybody’s lips a month ago in the area, however the road cyclist who won double Gold in Beijing was at it once again, this time at the London 2012 Paralympics. Stone won a Bronze medal in the mixed H1-2 time trial, much to his disappointed after the race but was delighted to have taken a phenomenal Gold in the mixed road race, winning the 24 kilometre race in 45 minutes and 24 seconds.

Leeds Adel HC Raring New Season, to get started Renewed Hope Leeds Adel Carnegie Hockey Club Ladies 1stXI get their new campaign under way in September, and will be hoping to improve on last season’s league position, when they finished in 10th place. Leeds Adel are due to face Wakefield 2s in their opening match of the season, a team who finished 3rd last year in the North Women's Hockey League - North Division 1.
Horsforth Fairweather have got their new season underway and will be hoping to improve vastly on last season’s efforts and perhaps aim for the upper echelons of the Leeds Combination Division 1. Fairweather opened the season with a heavy 4-2 home defeat, showing start of the season teething problems. However, they earned a 2-2 draw with Corpus Christi in their first away trip in a match which they dominated from start to finish, but a combination of poor finishing and a string of fine saves from the home keeper saw Horsforth leave with a solitary point.
Leeds Adel ironically played Wakefield 2s in the last match of the 2011/12 season but were unfortunately well beaten in a 7-1 away defeat. Blue Square North highfliers Guiseley AFC had three of their players called up to represent the England ‘C’ team for their recent International Challenge Trophy Group A fixture in Belgium. Guiseley’s skipper Simon Ainge [Pictured] earned his first cap against Russia in Moscow in June while summer acquisitions, Stephen Brogan and Josh Wilson were also named in Paul Fairclough’s squad for the trip to Belgium. England travelled knowing that they had to win if they were to stand a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of the challenge trophy. All three players were given match time as England won 2-1 courtesy of a late goal from Luton Town striker Andre Gray. England must now wait to see if the extremely strong Russia side can beat Italy in the final group match. The England ‘C’ team is set up as the semiprofessional England side, and is for non-league players only. Of the 18 man squad named for the win, Guiseley were the only team from below the Blue Square Premier to have players named , a huge credit to Lions manager Steve Kittrick and the club who have been extremely unfortunate not to have gained promotion in the last two seasons. As for the league campaign, the Nethermoor side were quick out of the blocks and won their opening six matches of the new season, but a heavy defeat away to former league side Chester saw them slip to third place in the division. Chester and Brackley Town are the only teams who sit above the Lions at the moment having won all of their seven matches, a mean feat considering they have both only just been promoted to the competitive division.

Spiders Relish New Season
Assassin becomes British Open Champ
Leeds Spiders wheelchair basketball team are getting ready to start their new season in the Wheelchair Basketball North Division 1 and 3. The Spiders begin the new season in October with the incredibly tough challenge of last year’s league winners the Sheffield Steelers.
Rawdon’s Hollywood darts player Martin Atkins has enjoyed further success, securing the BDO Darts British Open title to rocket him up to equal 9th in the World Rankings. The British Open, held in Bridlington was a long and tiring event for Yorkshire’s ‘Assassin’ who had to whittle down a field of 512 to pick up the honours at the last knockings.
The North Division 1 is sure to be ultra competitive yet again this year, with many hopeful players, desperate to get their name in the hat for the GB Paralympic team and the Road to Rio 2016. Leeds Spiders 1st team can only go one way this season after finishing at the foot of the table last year, however, in such a competitive and strong division it will be another tough test, but one the players will relish again. As for the Spiders 2nd team, they can look to mount a challenge nearer the top of the North Division 3 after cementing 4th position last time around. The side can also look forward to a well deserved new kit this season following the generosity of Sainsbury’s customers in the Leeds who helped to fund the team’s attire. The continued interest, and the expectation of further interest following the Paralympics means that the Spiders are looking to start up a women’s side as well, developing the club further and driving them forward for the future.
Olympic Legacy begins - Free Sports Coaching for Young People
Leeds Spiders derives from the charity Sport Promoting Inclusion for the Disabled and Equal Rights-in Yorkshire or SPIDER-Y as it is known. The commissioned charity was established in 2007 and aims to provide disability sports to the region. Furthermore it helps to assist the Leeds Spiders Wheelchair Basketball team and the Leeds Rhino’s Wheelchair Rugby team who have recently completed their first competitive season. Wheelchair Sprinter Hannah Cockroft and double gold medallist from the London 2012 Paralympic games is a patron of the charity. Hannah, from Halifax is a proud ambassador for increasing the participation in disability sports and is sure to have been a big inspiration to many following her successes. This is a free course and you will work towards an ABA Preliminary Boxing Award, OCR Functional Skills Award in maths, and an NCFE Level 1 Award in Principles of Coaching Sport.
