A Letter from the Editor

We’ve a slightly new look for you this month – nothing too drastic but we hope you find the changes positive. We’ve planned a number of changes to your favourite local mag over the coming months, including a larger format and expansion into new areas. We’ll keep you posted.

This month we report on more misery from Leeds City Council’s overzealous ticketing in car parks. This targeting of ‘easy prey’ whilst turning a blind-eye to real parking problems is unpalatable at best. Please let us know if you feel you’ve been unjustly ticketed.

UK’S

Age UK Still Seeing Double in Horsforth Age UK was launched three years ago after a merger between Age Concern and Help the Aged. That merger left the new brand with two shops on Horsforth Town Street – one at the top opposite HSBC and the other at the bottom opposite the Post Office. But any question of combining the two was put off indefinitely while each continued to prosper in its own right. Which indeed they do. Both are pictured here.

A message from both Ruth and Sue; “We are always keen to hear from anyone wishing to offer us help or support. And, of course, donate goods for us to sell. When donating, please don’t forget to sign the “Gift Aid” option – increasing the sales revenue by as much as 25% and without affecting your own tax status in any way whatsoever.”

Yeadon’s Young Olympians Leeds City Council, under the incarnation of Aireborough Extended Services, laid on an extensive series of educational, recreational and sporting activities in July and August for youngsters in Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon. The series of events culminated on Wednesday 22 August at Yeadon Westfield Infant School. The relay race, part of the Silly Olympics, went better for the teams on the day than it had done for Britain’s Olympians proper. The instructor substituted batons with “high fives” – less easy to fumble or drop.

COOKRIDGE CARPETS Quality ~ Service ~ Value

From the 1st Saturday of the October, Horsforth will boast a regular farmers market to add extra value to its already popular Town Street.

The Farmers Market is organised as part of Hope in Horsforth, a fortnight organised by Horsforth Churches together to bring people together to celebrate messages, actions and stories of hope. Early October is traditional harvest time and the farmers market is part of a bigger event called Harvesting Hope which seeks to help us as a community ‘celebrate creation and how we can share it.’ There will also be a market place of ideas and projects which inspire to that aim, a café area where several local people who will be interviewed to share short stories of hope.

Cookridge Fire Station Open Day or is it Closure? Cookridge Fire Station held its annual open day on Sunday 2 September. Hundreds of visiting families were treated to expert displays from a wide range of displays. West Yorkshire Fire Services showed you exactly how to deal with domestic fires, most spectacularly that of a chip pan. Or, to be more specific, how not to. Plus demonstrations of other rescue equipment underground, on the ground and high rise.

Cookridge Fire Station open day on 2 September gave the community an excellent opportunity to connect with all the emergency services. But might it have been their last opportunity at this location?

West Yorkshire Police, WY Ambulance Services and the charity Yorkshire Air Ambulance were also there, promoting awareness of their services and answering everything you ever wanted to know about 999 dramas for real.

before

Unfortunately, the event was soured a few days later by the announcement of the question of whether the station itself was soon to be closed - as part of WY Fire Service’s ongoing and latest efficiency review.

New PatieNts welcome

Covered magazine has learned that one preferred site for a new station, possibly combining the responsibilities of Cookridge and Moortown, is the Weetwood Police Station site on the ring road. Would a new purpose built site, not far away, serve the community better - or might its wider responsibilities dilute its capacity below acceptable levels? Adel councillor Barry Anderson is keeping his finger on the pulse – please see this month’s column. And the topic is up for discussion at the Adel Association’s next meeting on 20 September.

Cavie Rescue Fundraising in Horsforth Yes, cavie rescue, not cave. If you didn’t know, cavie is a fancy word for hamster. Hamsters are among the many small domestic animals and pets abandoned, unwanted or mistreated by their owners. Being so small, and less noisy, they don’t hit the headlines as often as, say, dogs or cats. That is where the registered charity Bramley Animal Rescue and Education comes in.

Gavin Scott BDS LDSRCS MFGDP(UK) MBA JP has nearly 30 year’s experience as a General Dental Practitioner and is giving free initial implant consultations call the practice on 0113 258 3349 for more information.

A Family Practice Ivory Dental Practice offer a comprehensive range of general dental treatments, as well as routine check-up appointments in order to keep your family's teeth healthy. Our routine dental services form a main part of our philosophy that prevention is better than cure. We encourage patients to come to see the dentist and hygienist at regular intervals, as this will ensure you will enjoy long term oral health. How could anyone not want these lionhead rabbits? Well, somebody didn’t – which is where BARE steps in.

BARE held a fundraising day on 9 September at St Margaret’s Church Hall, Horsforth – using the day to showcase the animals they rescue and the educational, recreational and therapeutic visits they are able to make. Further info on 07814 204221 and bramleycaviesrescue.com

Finance Matters Our Editor Chris Barnham investigates a financial issue that might affect the residents of this area. A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

The fact is though that Inheritance Tax can eat into your legacy, taking up to 40% of the value of your estate, an estate that you will have probably paid tax on at various times of your life already. With a bit of pre-planning and anticipation you can greatly help your beneficiaries financially, and avoid what can be an enormous probate headache. Writing an effective will, making lifetime gifts and using various available exemptions and allowances can help to reduce or even eliminate the tax liability. The key is to anticipate what you might need and to ensure that the inheritance that you leave goes to the right people, at the right time and in the right way. Some investments may qualify for 100% IHT relief after just two years, some trusts can reduce your IHT liability immediately. Alternative approaches, such as setting up pensions for grandchildren or taking out Whole-of-Life insurance policies, can also be used effectively in estate planning. This is a fairly complex area and professional advice should always be sought. Ordering your affairs in advance though won’t just leave your children and grandchildren with some extra financial help, it will make the lives of those mourning your loss considerably easier as they try to grapple with your legacy.

Despite the swampy conditions this year, Rawdon Fun Day has now established itself as such an important event in the area’s fundraising and fun-raising (ouch!) calendar that the organising committee decided that it was time they should have an original logo all of their own. Competition winner Jessica Gidlow is shown here at Rawdon Littlemoor School, receiving from RFD committee member Diane Jones a framed copy of the logo as adopted. Proud mum Martina is looking on.

After the race, he thanked his support team - many of whom originate from Leeds and the surrounding areas. He hopes that many more people from the region will be inspired by the attitude and determination of Yorkshire athletes to take part in disabled sport.

When champion triple jumper Jonathan Edwards was interviewed two years ago he referred to the importance of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic legacy stretching beyond the capital. In light of the success of Britain’s athletes there are calls for an internal review into sporting facilities in the region On the final day of the games, Yorkshire hand - to investigate how facilities can be used more cyclist David Stone claimed a gold medal in the efficiently for the provision of Paralympic sports. Horsforth Town Council continues in its role of cooperation and involvement through the work of its committees. The Environment and Community Committee continues to offer grants to local organisations who work for the benefit of Horsforth. The next meeting of this committee is late October. So, if your organisation is thinking of applying for a grant, please contact the Town Council offices as soon as you can. Groups such as Horsforth Churches Together (for Hope in the Park this Autumn), Horsforth in Bloom and the Friends of Hall Park (for their Summer Band Concerts) have all received support for their activities.

With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

This is the time to prepare for winter, as the autumn nights become colder and the sunsets even earlier. Your bedding plants which have looked so bright will now be starting to fade and go to seed. So take this opportunity to remove them, fork over the bed and sprinkle some Growmore or fish blood and bone to revitalise the ground. In this space you can now plant a range of daffodils and crocus, together with either wall flowers or winter pansies and violas. This also applies to large containers, which can look spectacular in the spring if planted with layers of bulbs to flower in succession.

In the vegetable garden, start to dig over any ground as it becomes vacant - to clear the weeds which have grown faster than anything this year. Over wintering onions are available for planting now, to produce an early crop in the spring. Savoy cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts and other winter greens should be protected from birds, and slugs, to ensure your harvest over the winter. The Horsforth Allotment shed on Featherbank Lane, Horsforth is holding an Autumn sale of composts and fertilisers, on each Friday in October from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The shed is also open every Friday night from 7pm – 8pm for quality gardening products and friendly advice. For further information please visit: www.haga.btck.co.uk

The lawn will benefit from scarifying and spiking, with the blades of your mower set slightly higher to assist with its slower growth. Then apply an autumn feed to the grass, which promotes strong root growth without making it grow longer.

It is good practise to reduce your roses and other tall growing perennials by at least one third, to prevent wind rock which can lead to premature failure. If your plants have grown much larger this year, it is possible to split these clumps, replanting the new sections while the soil is still warm and moist.

Did you know that you have a sixth sense which is your intuition? You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘it was my feminine intuition’ used to explain some seemingly crazy decision making process which turned out to be right! Your intuition is a feeling, a hunch, a knowing that something is the ‘right thing’, even if we can’t explain how we know. Our intuition is literally our internal GPS, our inner guidance system. A lot of the time we follow our intuition without knowing it. So when you act on a hunch, or because ‘it feels right’, if you have a gut feeling about something or you just ‘know’ that a particular course of action is the right one to take, then you’re following your intuition! Our intuition is always right. It really does know best, but because we’re so used to listening to our mind, that insistent voice in our head, we tend not to hear the quiet, subtle voice of our intuition, which makes itself apparent in the form of a gut feeling and through our emotions. But if we can learn to tune in to our sixth sense, decision making becomes easier and so does reaching our goals.

Techie Tips Feeling the need to buy a new computer or laptop? Please stop and consider this. All Windows computers slow down over time, but it’s usually simple to correct. Perhaps you purchased a budget model? Fitting more memory (RAM) will give your machine new legs. Cost £20-£40 Have you ever noticed that there’s never an instruction manual telling you how to look after Windows? Whether it’s XP, Vista or 7, Windows needs attention to keep it running efficiently, but the retailers, manufacturers and Microsoft don’t bother to tell you this. They rely on you becoming frustrated with a slow computer and buying a new one. They want you to think of your computer as just another domestic appliance, like a fridge. If it doesn’t work how you want, you buy another. This is like buying a new car because the oil needs changing. Good for the retailers, bad for your pocket. Learning a little about servicing Windows is a sound investment, but if technical stuff is not your thing, do what you do with your car – have it serviced, at least once a year, and preferably every six months. At the very least, Google for how to defragment the hard drive and how to do a virus scan. You do have an anti-virus don’t you? Keep it clean! The cooling fans draw in dust, which gets stuck inside the casing. This causes slowdowns, overheating and it can kill a laptop. It’s easily blown away, a bit like your budget!

Cycling: Never more popular, but never more dangerous?

• No win - no fee available • No hidden charges

Who would have thought we would be seeing the front pages our national newspapers given over to cycling? First, we had the papers heralding Britain's maiden victor in the 99th Tour De France, Bradley Wiggins, and now, as I write, they are celebrating a silver medal for Otley's very own, “Queen Elizabeth”; Lizzie Armitstead, in the women's Olympic road race. These great performances have helped further increase cycling's profile and have coincided with a number of other initiatives and factors that have see the participation and popularity of pedalling soar. We not only have commuters saving money by cycling to work, whole families being bitten by the cycling bug but we see our political figures almost fighting to be pictured with their bike helmet festooned on head.

• 100% Compensation • Speak to an independent solicitor for the best advice • Accident companies or insurance company referrals may not give you the best deal Rogan Ashton, Wilsons Solicitors

Whilst cycling is on the rise and the cyclist must be making a mark on the public consciousness there is no getting away from the fact that the cyclist remains our most vulnerable road user. The cyclist, in contrast to the pedestrian, who is frequently kept away from traffic, is right there, battling for space amongst the juggernauts, buses and cars. Cars too have also continued their increase, long since moved on from being a luxury item, there are now an incredible 33 million cars on the UK roads. The rise in both sets of numbers mean that accidents between cyclists and cars are more and more likely.

Whilst I will decline to enter the battlefield of cyclists v motorists, partly because the same people frequent both, the reality is that there is only going to be one winner in a collision between human bone and metal. I have dealt with many claims by injured cyclists and the effects can sadly be very serious. Otley’s own “Queen Elizabeth”, Lizzie Armistead (Photo by David Iliff)

My message therefore to you, before your car journey today is: keep an eye out for the vulnerable cyclist, and who knows, that young kid on the bike, Rogan Ashton, Wilsons Solicitors. how safe is your home? Improve the security of your home by following our check list: • •

Make sure your doors and the frames are in good condition. Fit strong locks to all external doors and windows and make sure you use them! Remove keys from inside locks and keep them out of sight in a drawer or safe place. Using a UV pen, mark property with your postcode and house number. This helps the police identify it as stolen property, should it be recovered. Fit a good quality door chain and spy-hole to your main door and use them. Thieves know where to look so don’t hide spare keys under doormats, stones or flowerpots. Leave on lights and close curtains when going out at night. Keep ladders and tools locked away so burglars cannot make use of them Install outdoor security lighting and keep hedges trimmed so your property can be easily seen by you and your neighbours. Fit a burglar alarm.

facebook.com/bridgeinn.lowlane

Michael Cruise of MCC Small Electricals is a fully accredited JIB Approved Electrician and Alarm Engineer with over 25 years experience. He advises “A burglar will look for old bell boxes and alarms with door contacts, rather than Infra Red devices which are far harder to overcome. Beware of salesmen at the door too – they may tip off burglars. Don’t discuss alarms with anyone cold-calling at the door – they could well be looking for properties to recommend to a burglar”. Michael advises residents to consider Security Lighting or CCTV, and if you are unsure of what systems may be best, call a Crime Prevention Officer forimpartial advice. If you are thinking of replacing your current Alarm System think how easy a new one will be to use - price isn’t the only consideration. Also, think about how old your system is – if the bell box looks rusty, it will appeal to burglars. Are you happy that your system will actually work? Test it regularly. If you are considering upgrading your home security, or want more advice, contact Michael Cruise on 0800 357 9995 or www.mccsmallelectricals.co.uk

Covered Guide To... Looking Good For Christmas

The kids are back at school which can only mean that the countdown to Christmas has started. This means parties, work-do’s, nights out and lots of festive fun. And who doesn’t want to turn up at a Christmas ‘do’ looking their best? While we don’t claim to be a team of stunners here at ‘Covered’, we have been doing some research into the science of looking good and believe we have learnt a thing or two. Firstly, if you’re carrying an extra pound or two that you’d like to shift, now is the time! Why not join a slimming group for moral support? If you’re watching the calories, it makes sense to maximise your efforts and do some exercise too. If you’re new to exercise, take it easy. Don’t expect too much, too soon. Just find something you enjoy, be it Zumba, swimming or running, and get a friend to join you. It will be harder to drop out if you’re letting someone else down too. If you’re a smoker, don’t wait until January to kick the habit. Smoking leaves you with stained teeth and hampers the blood supply that keeps skin tissue looking supple and healthy. Why not take part in Stoptober? See www.smokefree.nhs.uk/stoptober for more information. Even the shortest, chewed nails can benefit from the occasional manicure. And don’t forget to treat your feet, just because you’ve swapped your birkies for Uggs, your toes may still be on show when you’re dressed to impress. Now is the time to start looking after yourself in order to look your best for the party season!

POTENTIAL CLOSURE OF COOKRIDGE FIRE STATION Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward barryanderson.yourcllr.com I was recently advised in a press release from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority that, at their September meeting, they are due to discuss the potential closure of Cookridge Fire Station and merging it with the Moortown station at a location somewhere between the two. Based on the documentation prepared by WYFRA, a summary of the current situation is given under. Operational incidents in both areas combined have reduced by 26%, and house fires by 21%, since 2006/7. Cookridge and Moortown each have one fire engine which is continually on standby with a crew of five. Both have low operational activity levels with Cookridge being used just 4.7% of the time. Fire Response Units are being used in the Leeds area to deal with smaller fires and thus this frees their remaining fire engines to deal with more serious incidents. During 2011/12, 87% of incidents were dealt with by one fire engine. The predicted new emergency response times will remain within the acceptable risk category in the Fire Authority’s planning assumptions. They will continue to provide targeted community safety and risk reduction activities. The area covered by Cookridge Fire Station is currently classified as medium risk. The alternative location though not yet chosen is “ideally in north Leeds approximately two miles from Cookridge and Moortown - between the two existing fire stations and in the area of the ring road in Weetwood.” Whatever decision is made it is important that the safety of residemts served by Cookridge Fire Station are not put at additional risk. Or, exceptionally, any increase in risk needs to be properly mitigated. It is also important that all the facts are laid before local residents in a clear and concise manner and that the consultation is meaningful and not just a tick box exercise because it is expected of the Fire Authority. I shall of course be keeping in close touch with WYFRA and be keeping residents informed. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns or questions in the meantime.

Greg Mulholland MP gives “Best in Show” award to Keith Lawson and his yellow orchid (centre of table).

Cookridge Horticultural Society Flower Show Despite our wettest summer ever, or perhaps because of it, Cookridge Flower Show saw a bumper crop of entries in its annual flower show on 8 September. Their 69th annual show, it was also the 7th time Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, had been invited to award the prizes; “ I’m delighted to have been invited again. I would like vto pay credit to the efforts of all entrants, and the Socity itself. I am particularly impressed with the way in which the Society has engaged with local schoolchildren.” Equally impressed was blogger “Mrs Hawkins”, learning support assistant at Cookridge Primary School and “part time gardener”. On the following Tuesday she blogged about the school’s last-minute entries on the day, and her thrill when she saw the prizes and recognition they had received – see cookridgeschoolgarden.blogspot.co.uk This entry in the craft competition might be coming out again at Christmas

Stone Storms to Paralympic Gold

Rawdon resident David Stone MBE, may not have been a name on everybody’s lips a month ago in the area, however the road cyclist who won double Gold in Beijing was at it once again, this time at the London 2012 Paralympics. Stone won a Bronze medal in the mixed H1-2 time trial, much to his disappointed after the race but was delighted to have taken a phenomenal Gold in the mixed road race, winning the 24 kilometre race in 45 minutes and 24 seconds.

Donations/Sales Call: David Stone has been honoured with this gold postbox outside Rawdon Post Office. Local resident and Rotarian Barrie King is shown putting it to good use – perhaps just as well he was wearing his sunglasses.

the field away in the Road Race at Brands Hatch, a course that he felt was suited to his riding style. It was always going to be a tough test to emulate the results of Beijing, but after picking up the bronze in the Time Trial there were few who could look past the magnificent Stone, who took out his frustration of finishing third out on his second and final event.

The Paralympic champion now has the honour of a golden post box on Rawdon’s Town Street, add that to Horsforth and Alistair Brownlee’s post box and it’s safe to say that we can be incredibly proud of the athletes we have located in our region! On top of the golden post box, all Paralympic and Olympic gold medal winners will have their own stamps, move over Queen Elizabeth! So what’s next for our Paralympic hero? Only time will tell whether he is ready to push on and aim David Stone, who has Cerebral Palsy rides an higher still and go for further Paralympic success adapted Trike in his races, and successfully blew in Rio 2016.

Leeds Adel HC Raring New Season, to get started Renewed Hope Leeds Adel Carnegie Hockey Club Ladies 1stXI get their new campaign under way in September, and will be hoping to improve on last season’s league position, when they finished in 10th place. Leeds Adel are due to face Wakefield 2s in their opening match of the season, a team who finished 3rd last year in the North Women's Hockey League - North Division 1.

Horsforth Fairweather have got their new season underway and will be hoping to improve vastly on last season’s efforts and perhaps aim for the upper echelons of the Leeds Combination Division 1. Fairweather opened the season with a heavy 4-2 home defeat, showing start of the season teething problems. However, they earned a 2-2 draw with Corpus Christi in their first away trip in a match which they dominated from start to finish, but a combination of poor finishing and a string of fine saves from the home keeper saw Horsforth leave with a solitary point.

Leeds Adel ironically played Wakefield 2s in the last match of the 2011/12 season but were unfortunately well beaten in a 7-1 away defeat. The new start is sure to bring renewed ambition however, and the chance to start on a level playing field again is sure to inspire a more competitive and closer match this Manager Martin Woods is sure to have been time around. thrilled with the overall performance, which saw Leeds Adel play the majority of their home matches his side create enough clear cut chances to win at Adel Sports Club, off Church Lane, Adel and three or four matches. Horsforth start their cup are always welcome to new players and fans, roads in the next month, hoping to progress in the Sanford and County Cups. hockeyinleeds.co.uk

Guiseley’s Three Lions

GET YOUR BUSINESS

Covered

Blue Square North highfliers Guiseley AFC had three of their players called up to represent the England ‘C’ team for their recent International Challenge Trophy Group A fixture in Belgium. Guiseley’s skipper Simon Ainge [Pictured] earned his first cap against Russia in Moscow in June while summer acquisitions, Stephen Brogan and Josh Wilson were also named in Paul Fairclough’s squad for the trip to Belgium. England travelled knowing that they had to win if they were to stand a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of the challenge trophy. All three players were given match time as England won 2-1 courtesy of a late goal from Luton Town striker Andre Gray. England must now wait to see if the extremely strong Russia side can beat Italy in the final group match. The England ‘C’ team is set up as the semiprofessional England side, and is for non-league players only. Of the 18 man squad named for the win, Guiseley were the only team from below the Blue Square Premier to have players named , a huge credit to Lions manager Steve Kittrick and the club who have been extremely unfortunate not to have gained promotion in the last two seasons. As for the league campaign, the Nethermoor side were quick out of the blocks and won their opening six matches of the new season, but a heavy defeat away to former league side Chester saw them slip to third place in the division. Chester and Brackley Town are the only teams who sit above the Lions at the moment having won all of their seven matches, a mean feat considering they have both only just been promoted to the competitive division.

The club are also set to begin their F.A Cup dream having been drawn away to Evo-Stik side Bamber Bridge who hail from Preston in the second qualifying round. The Lions reached the 1st main round in the 2010/11 season where they were beaten by Crawley Town, a side who have since experience back-to-back promotions and are tipped by many to reach the Championship come May. Last season was a disappointing, however, and Kittrick will be keen not to let the same complacency which saw them knocked out by lower league opposition last year, creep back in for the trip to Lancashire.

Spiders Relish New Season

Assassin becomes British Open Champ

Leeds Spiders wheelchair basketball team are getting ready to start their new season in the Wheelchair Basketball North Division 1 and 3. The Spiders begin the new season in October with the incredibly tough challenge of last year’s league winners the Sheffield Steelers.

Rawdon’s Hollywood darts player Martin Atkins has enjoyed further success, securing the BDO Darts British Open title to rocket him up to equal 9th in the World Rankings. The British Open, held in Bridlington was a long and tiring event for Yorkshire’s ‘Assassin’ who had to whittle down a field of 512 to pick up the honours at the last knockings.

The North Division 1 is sure to be ultra competitive yet again this year, with many hopeful players, desperate to get their name in the hat for the GB Paralympic team and the Road to Rio 2016. Leeds Spiders 1st team can only go one way this season after finishing at the foot of the table last year, however, in such a competitive and strong division it will be another tough test, but one the players will relish again. As for the Spiders 2nd team, they can look to mount a challenge nearer the top of the North Division 3 after cementing 4th position last time around. The side can also look forward to a well deserved new kit this season following the generosity of Sainsbury’s customers in the Leeds who helped to fund the team’s attire. The continued interest, and the expectation of further interest following the Paralympics means that the Spiders are looking to start up a women’s side as well, developing the club further and driving them forward for the future.

Olympic Legacy begins - Free Sports Coaching for Young People

Wheelchair Sprinter Hannah Cockroft and double gold medallist from the London 2012 Paralympic games is a patron of the charity.
