Diamond Jubilee Tree Planting at Farsley Farfield
Celebrations of the Queens Diamond Jubilee have already begun at Farsley Farfield School where parents, children and staff have been planting trees to commemorate the special occasion. Over thirty volunteers braved the cold, windy weather one recent Saturday morning to take part in the event which involved transplanting 3 and 4
Farsley Cafe Go Brazilian Farsley Farfield Cafe is going to hold a Brazilian themed day on Saturday 17th March in an attempt to fundraise for one of their volunteers. The cafe, situated on the grounds of Farsley Farfield Primary School is looking to help their volunteer get to South America for an organised placement. In addition to the Brazilian day, staff at the cafe will be walking the three peaks as they look to reach their fundraising target. Farfield Cafe also held ‘A Question of Sport’ quiz night which saw a signed Leeds Rhino’s shirt as a prize, with entrants in the quiz getting food and a pint for their money too! Room 101
Since George Orwell first came up with the concept, many people have been asked to contemplate their own Room 101, a room containing their own worst fears.
However, 101 should soon have a new more positive association. In 1937, the emergency 999 phone number was introduced. Now 75 years later, an equivalent non-emergency number, 101, has been introduced across the country. In 2010, the British Crime Survey found that only 54% of the public know how to contact their local police if they want to talk to them about policing, crime or anti social behaviour.
So what does this mean for Local residents of Horsforth, Cookridge, Rawdon and Yeadon? Well Matters hopefully a much easier number to remember when phoning your local police control room……and it is still is your West Yorkshire police control room that answer your calls. There is no national or international call centre, just West Yorkshire Police officers and staff available 24 hours a day to handle your enquiry. You will hear a recorded message first though, when you phone. This is because the 101 number is a national number. Technology at the telephone exchange will connect you to the nearest Police force unless you choose otherwise. Worth remembering if you are ringing on a mobile phone whilst walking on Billings Hill or the Chevin – the technology may offer to connect you to North Yorkshire Police first as the phone mast you are using may be in North Yorkshire. One last thing, this does not replace the 999 number which should always be called in an emergency, when life is in danger or when a crime is in progress.

Stuart Andrew MP
Increasing transport funding for the North of England is something I have been very vocal about for years and I was pleased to see this discussed in the House of Commons in February. A local media campaign has really brought this matter out in the open in Leeds and I have long felt that there is a clear north/south divide when it comes to funding. According to the Institute for Public Policy Research 84 percent of planned new transport infrastructure spending was aimed at London and the South East in comparison with 6 percent in the North of England. Whilst the Government is taking steps to increase investment in the North with projects such as the two new stations in Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge and the electrification of the line between Manchester and Leeds, I believe more needs to be done to address this imbalance and as such raised this in the House of Commons last month. I was also pleased to have the opportunity this month to lead a debate on the responsibility that high street
banks have to assist carers when it comes to online banking for the people they care for. Having been approached by a constituent who is a carer for her son and hearing her story of struggling to get banks to take carers into consideration when setting their online banking policy I was able to hear first hand just how challenging this seemingly straightforward act of accessing money online can be. Carers should not have to spend their valuable spare time, when they are not looking after the people they care for, going through a complex bureaucratic complaints procedure.

The Sinking of The Sub
Local Matters
Residents of Farsley will perhaps be familiar with the sight of the brightly coloured double-decker FYDP bus but perhaps not aware of its purpose or the hard work of the organisation responsible for it. Sadly, like many things, you don’t always know what you have till it’s gone – and unfortunately for FYDP, it will soon no longer exist. Farsley Youth Development Project (FYDP) was set up in 2003 by a group that included local people, professional youth workers and members of the local churches. One of the key aims of the FYDP is to help young people, particularly those on the margins of the community, to realise their full potential. Every week, the bus (nicknamed The Sub) parks up within Farsley providing a safe place for young people to spend time together. Other aims of FYDP include providing activities and learning opportunities for young people, to bring people together at intergenerational events and provide mentoring and support where needed.
station, SPIN fm. One of FYDP’s most well-known projects has been its involvement in the extremely successful Farsley Farfield Community Cafe. FYDP was set up to support the young people of Farsley, and to help make the community a better place. It has been a great asset to our community. Howard Bradley, FYDP Manager said ‘We are proud of what we have achieved, but it is the end of an era.’
FYDP has organised numerous events including An event to celebrate the life and work of FYDP will cinema screenings, fundraising gigs, Summer be held at the Farsley Farfield Community Cafe on Festivals and has even broadcasted its own radio 24 March 2012.
Farsley Table Top Sale
Forget standing outside at carboot sales in the cold weather, if you fancy making some money from your unwanted gifts, out-grown toys or homemade crafts, book a table at your local table top sale (TTS). Every month St. John’s Farsley host a TTS where tables can be hired for £7. The cost of the table hire goes towards a new stained glass window at the Church. Profits made on the stalls go to the seller, or their chosen charity.
Happy Buyers!
February’s table top sale was a great success with a strong crowd all on the hunt for a bargain or for something a little different from the crafters. Various charities were represented on the day including Cancer Research UK, The Cat Rescue charity and Friends of St. John. `

Bring Back A Bank! Libraries Aren’t Pants!
Farsley has clothes shops, coffee shops, bridal shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, a post office, a car dealership and even a haberdashery but Farsley has no bank.
Despite the advertisements made by Royal Bank of Scotland who claimed they would be the “last bank in town”, the doors to Natwest in Farsley closed for the final time in June 2011. Residents of Farsley signed a petition which was used as part of the evidence in the complaints filed by Councillor Andrew Carter and the pressure group Campaign for Community Banking Services (CCBS) submitted to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). In February 2012 the ASA ruled that the advertisements must not be shown again in their current form. Mr Carter said he was ‘delighted’ with this decision. Unfortunately this decision will not result in the bank in Farsley being re-opened and residents of Farsley will have to now travel to Pudsey or Horsforth to access their ‘local’ branch.

Pants: good clean fun in Farsley Libraryn(Photo: Marion Cole)
Keeping the interest of a large group of children aged from 9 months to nine years is no easy task but staff at Farsley Library did just that this week armed with nothing more than a selection of books. The staff had the children fascinated - so what was their secret? The topic was pants! Hilarious if your age is still a single figure. Stories were followed by craft activities that included a picture hunt and decorating paper pants. The event was the first of a series ran in conjunction with Bramley Library. The aim is to encourage children to visit the library and enjoy reading books.

Carter’s Chutney Class
(photo: Marion Cole)
Following Councillor Andrew Carter’s win at the Creative Calverley Chutney Bake-off in December, he promised to share his secret recipe. True to his word, Andrew recently invited his competition rivals to a Chutney making workshop in his own home. As well as making a delicious Plum and Apple chutney to take away, this fun event involved tasting a selection of homemade chutneys and jams, served with a selection of cheeses and sharing recipes, hints and tricks. Everyone attending the event had a great afternoon and left a little more knowledgeable about how to cook ‘The Perfect Chutney’. Andrew Carter may have tougher competition in the next bake-off!
CCTV to Tackle AntiSocial Behaviour in Farsley Following complaints made by Farsley residents and business owners, West Yorkshire Police are working in conjunction with Leeds City Council Anti Social Behaviour Team and West North West Homes to tackle anti social behaviour problems in the area. The installation of CCTV on Farfield shops on Farfield Avenue is being considered in an effort to deal with the on-going problem. Residents have felt intimidated and frightened by the groups of youths loitering around the shops. CCTV has been successful in reducing crime and anti-social
Community Cinema
Local Matters

Attending the cinema can be arduous. First there is getting there, finding a place to park, choosing what to watch, queuing for tickets, then popcorn... Never mind the cost! Thankfully the idea of the Community Cinema has taken hold in our area and several churches now hold a monthly film screening. Attending a Community Cinema event is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon and taking the kids along to a film showing in a church hall is so much more relaxing than at a multi-screen theatre. At St John’s in Farsley, admission is free and refreshments are served throughout the showing (hot chocolate and fabulous homemade cake). There is no tutting if the kids are a little fidgety and they are free to get up and dance should they wish (and they often do!). For adults looking for a little child-free time, Calverley C of E is the latest church to introduce a film screening. Doors will open at 6:30 on 17th March for a showing of Mania Mia. All are welcome and you can even dress up and sing-a-long! behaviour in other areas of Leeds and it is thought that it will be a useful tool to assist in the detection and apprehension of offenders. West Yorkshire Police recently issued questionnaires to residents regarding their use of the local shops. Information received from residents will support the application for CCTV. In a recent letter to residents the police pointed out that it is only a small minority of people who commit acts of crime and anti-social behaviour and they are aware that most people are respectful members of the community.

Give Covered a call to claim Dear Covered The canal bank is used by cyclists, dog walkers and families alike. Many dog owners take responsibility for their dogs fouling, but many don’t and leave excrement on the towpath to be trod in by children etc. Some dog owners do use the doggy loos provided but the rest use branches of trees to hang their waste bags on! Many bags are thrown over the wall and these have been ingested by the cows that used to graze causing them to abort their calves and have abdominal problems. There are never any dog wardens about and I wish the minority would do what is right as it is giving good and responsible dog owners a bad name. Name and address supplied Dear Covered, As a mum of two, I regularly use the playground in Rodley but it is awful to see so much graffiti and the spongy safety mat is often pulled up and shredded. Litter and glass are a regular occurrence. Youths often congregate here and to their credit most of them are polite towards my children often helping them on the climbing frame but there are of course a few who loiter using bad language and are generally bawdy. Can you, through your magazine, highlight this mess? Name and address supplied

18 Garden Guru Local Matters
Garden Guru
With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
The bulb family are in full bloom now, so take off the dead heads as they go over and sprinkle a general fertiliser around the base to build up the flowers for next year. Always allow the leaves to die down naturally, even if they look slightly untidy. If you have a frost free environment, it is time to start sowing hardy annuals and perennials for your summer colour. It is also a good time to plant new perennial plants, splitting up old clumps to rejuvenate them and planting in new areas. Witch hazels, camellias and other winter flowering shrubs have been looking lovely, if you need to prune them to keep them tidy this is the time as they start to finish flowering. Roses should also be pruned to keep an open goblet shape, with a top dressing of rose fertilizer hoed into the soil around the base. You will have noticed the grass is starting to grow again with the milder weather, which means you should start to rake out all the old dead grass and moss. It is useful to also spike the lawn with your garden fork, and if the conditions are right, give it a first cut with the blades set high. In the vegetable garden, sow broad beans in succession for an early crop. Enjoy your first forced rhubarb, providing a mulch for the main plants which should now be showing bright pink crowns. Apply sulphate of potash around all of your fruit trees and bushes to encourage flower and fruit production.

The monthly ‘Creative Calverley’ at the Thornhill Arms pub saw a host of stall holders brave the less than fantastic rainy weather on the first Saturday of the month.
Outside of the pub saw the residence of those brave enough to battle the elements, selling various breads and cakes on the food stalls. Other tables on the day offered flowers and bouquets while another sold a variety of candles in different shapes, sizes and scents. Despite a small turnout, Katie Lee (pictured) who has been running her stall for just a couple of months, said; “I’m just starting to make a profit now.” Katie whose cake making business runs out of the back of a Shipley bakery offers some exquisite cupcakes and cakes for all occasions. Make sure not to miss out on the next ‘Creative Calverley’ event which takes place on Saturday 7th April. You can also book a stall on the day as well by e-mailing info@creativecalverley.co.uk but be quick as stalls operate on a first come first served basis.

‘NatWest 4’ Raise Money for Marie Curie
Four Pudsey men are taking part in a series of events in Yorkshire over a period of three months, all in aid of Marie Curie cancer care. Chris Parkin, Jonny Dytiche, Chris Gratton and Nick Foster all started with a painstaking body wax in the first of the scheduled events. Chris Parkin, kicked off proceedings after openly admitting to having the ‘short straw,’ and exclaimed ‘’Hell hath no fury’’ following his armpit waxing.
Jonny Dytiche Braced in anticipation
Chris Gratton described the ordeal as ‘like being run over!’ while Jonny Dytiche who after watching the previous three, said; “it feels like D-Day I’ve just been given the five minute warning!” as he approached the waxing table. Despite a large amount of grimaces and screams of discomfort the four were in great spirits as they look to raise money for the fantastic cause. Speaking to Mr Parkin about the fundraising he said; ‘the aim is to make £1,600, if we reach that target the RBS group have agreed to donate £250 to each of us to give us £2,600.’ Next up for the ‘NatWest Four’ is a 12 mile row across Lake Windermere this month before they take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks, a gruelling 23.5 mile walk in April and end their challenges with the Marie Curie Great Escape in May. The four down to earth guys are putting their bodies through the paces and if you’d like to sponsor them, you can do so via justgiving.com/natwest4

Pudsey Cancer Patient Gets New Lease of Life Writing Her Dad’s Biography
Local Matters
Apparently there is a book in all of us, or at the very least a story. This was certainly true of Yorkshire born Len Watson aka ‘Spanner’ who had more than a few stories from his time as a Flight Engineer and 2nd pilot on Lancasters in World War II. Spanner often entertained his family with his tales about the war and it became obvious to daughter Gill that these stories must not be lost to history and so the idea to write a book was born. At the time, Pudsey resident Gill had recently been diagnosed with cancer. She was extremely ill and spent a great deal of time receiving treatment at St James’ Hospital. She now says that there was ‘no greater therapy’ than composing a book about her Dad’s memoirs. Gill filmed her father and then transcribed his stories, a task she says that was not easy as he had a tendency to jump several decades in one sentence! Gill’s book, ‘SPANNER – A Dales Lad to Bomber Command and Back’ follows Len’s life as a young lad growing up in the dales, his first employment building huts for evacuees and joining up aged just 19. He started as an aircraft fitter and progressed into engineering as ultimately he wanted to fly. He flew on a total of 33 sorties, some very eventful. Gill’s book is often humorous but equally sad particularly when she retells how Spanner described counting
Cllr Marjoram Speaks Hello, my name is Joe Marjoram and I’m a local Councillor for Calverley and Farsley Ward on Leeds City Council. There’s always a good deal going on and it’s the great variety of things to do that makes being a Councillor such a rewarding job. Schools, Planning, Highways, Parks and Housing are all things that we deal with every week of the year. Planning is always a ‘hot-topic’ and soon we’ll find out if the plan for 500 houses at the former Clariant factory on the ring road has been approved. It’s really important that we continue building houses but it mustn’t be at the expense of people who

the empty beds the morning after a sortie, as that was when you knew who had not returned. Sadly, Len died in June 2011, before the book was complete but Gill is very proud that his stories will live on. The book is available at Lidgett Hill Stationers, Pudsey. Please visit spanner-lenwatson.co.uk for further information. already live here. I’ll update you on the outcome in the next edition of Covered. We’re trying some new ways to get to meet people including ‘street surgeries’ where we write to 200 or so houses each week and then call round on a Saturday at all the houses that display the letter in the window. It’ll take a while to get round 8,000 houses – please be patient! I often use my phone to send photos of litter, vandalism and highways problems direct to Council staff. To help you do that I’m now on twitter and if you ‘tweet’ the problems in your area I’ll be sure to pass them on. Calverley Spring Clean – Garage sale: Calverley is gearing up for a village-wide ‘Spring Clean’ event on Saturday 17th March. The event, which is being organised by the local schools, will see residents throughout the village setting up stalls in their garages, driveways and front gardens, selling on their no longer needed items. Or alternatively home baking or craft items they’ve made – it’s anything goes really. From large items such as lawnmowers, children’s bikes and exercise equipment, to smaller items such as clothes, toys and baby items, people can sell whatever they wish. Participants pay just £5 for the early bird registration or £10 for a stall and can then keep all their own profits. The organisers will publicise the event widely throughout the village and surrounding areas and there will be maps printed showing visitors the locations of all the 60 different stalls. Rachel Cline, one of the event organisers: “The idea is for local people to come together to create a communitywide sale event that will draw people to the village and hopefully earn participants some cash. Spring is the time we all traditionally want to clean up and clear out and the beauty of this event is that it’s incredible easy. There’s no loading up the car to travel to a car boot sale or tip. People can sell directly from their own drives or front gardens.” People interested in participating but who do not live in Calverley may take a stall in the Conservative Club.
The event will take place 12-4pm Saturday, 17th March 2012, 12 – 4pm If you are interested in having a stall, please email: calverleyspringclean@ gmail.com or contact 0113 2195150. You can also follow the event on Facebook: ‘Calverley Spring Clean – Garage Sale’.

Local Ladies
If you are really committed to self improvement and want to change your life, the exercise I am about to describe can help to free your mind from daily worries and fears. It is called Morning Pages because the idea is that every morning when you wake up and before you do anything else, you sit down and write 3 pages of long hand describing everything that is in your head. For example the dream you’ve just had, that you forgot to ring your sister last night, that you’re worried about work, about money, about your relationship, or that you don’t want to go to the gym today! Write down anything and everything that crosses your mind. Don’t worry about it being too negative – that’s good, because it gives an outlet to all the negative thoughts that would otherwise be stuck in your head all day! This is a way of clearing your mind ready for the day ahead. Writing helps to make sense of your life and writing by hand as opposed to on the computer connects

Farsley AFC – a Mixed Bag
February has not been the best of months for Farsley AFC who had a tricky run of fixtures against fellow teams in the promotion mix. After postponements against Bamber Bridge and Harrogate Railway, Farsley made the short trip to Ossett Town on 14 February and won 2-0 thanks to an own goal and a Simeon Bambrook penalty. The following Saturday they hosted second-placed Curzon Ashton, a team they had not managed to beat in their previous three meetings this season. Despite Duncan Williams’ 83rd minute goal, Curzon took a 2-1 victory back to Manchester. A week later, AFC travelled to face Skelmersdale United, another play-off side. They took the lead from another fantastic strike from Simeon Bambrook, his 14th goal of the season, but the home side equalised through Louis Corrigan’s. Then, on the Tuesday, it was off to Guiseley for the semi-final of the West Riding County Cup. Despite a great second half performance, Farsley lost to the cup holders 2-1. The relentless run continues through March as the race for promotion heats up. Farsley will be at home on the 17th against strugglers Cammell Laird. On the 27th they host Radcliffe Borough. A trip to Trafford is sandwiched between those games before AFC ends the month at home against Mossley. Please support the team by coming to the games at Throstle Nest as Farsley attempts to secure a playoff place on 21 April. Farsley AFC Ladies recovering

Cup successes for Leeds United Ladies Leeds United Ladies, who also play at Throstle Nest on Sunday afternoons, have not played a league game since 8 January. But they have been enjoying a series of successes in the Women’s FA Cup. In the third round they thrashed Watford Ladies 6-1. Then on to Coventry City - a much tighter affair with Leeds winning 2-1 win with goals from Leah Galton and Carey Heugett. And, most recently on 1 Match, they secured a narrow 1-0 win at Sheffield United Ladies in their first match of the group stage in the Premier League Cup.
Farsley’s Ladies revival continues after a good run of form. A run of three victories has lifted them from the bottom of the table. On 29 January they came from a goal behind to beat Hebden Royd 2-1 courtesy of goals from Chloe Wainwright and Sarah Carter. Then on 19 February they beat Castleford 4-1. A week later they defeat Northowram 6-3 in an exciting game which included a hat-trick from Kerry McLoughlin.
Leeds Ladies will be playing at Throstle Nest on Thursday 15 March as they host Leeds City Vixens in their final group match of the Premier League Cup. Kick-off at 7:45pm. Other March games include visits to Reading (league) and Bristol (FA Cup).
The Ladies have another exciting game on Thursday 15 March when they play Bradford City Ladies in the County Cup semi-finals at the County HQ in Woodlesford. League games in March include trips to Republica and Tingley.
Lists of all fixtures and results may be found on each club’s website www.farsleyafc.co.uk www.farsleyafc.co.uk/ladies.html www.leedsunitedladies.com
Leeds Ladies will be back home on Sunday 1 April to Cardiff City Ladies (league), when Leeds’ sponsors League Against Cruel Sports is planning a display to raise public awareness of their cause.

Wally at the Double for Lions
A James Walshaw double saw Guiseley reach the West Riding County Cup Final as they beat Farsley 2-1 in the semi-final at Nethermoor. The Lions won the competition last year with a 4-2 win over Thackley in the final and will need to beat Harrogate Town this year to pick up the honours again at Bradford City’s Valley Parade. Walshaw was at the heart of everything for the hosts and could have had a first half hat-trick but for a couple of missed chances. The striker bagged his first on 28 minutes; a quick free-kick from Michael Burns released Chris Senior who kindly rolled the ball across goal for an unmarked Walshaw to slot home.
