Wills Wilsons can help with major changes or challenges in your life. We make things easier for you and your loved ones when change happens. Some people don’t like to think about making a will, others see it as good preparation - death affects the people around you too. Wills - The Important Facts If you don’t have a will don’t assume everything will go to your partner if you die. This isn’t necessarily so, especially if you are not married to them. • If you don’t have a will some people might inherit from you purely by being a blood relation whether you would have wanted them to or not. • Houses in joint ownership are automatically inherited by the other joint owner even if your will says differently, unless you have taken proper legal steps to prevent this happening. • If you have a will and then marry your current will is automatically cancelled so you need to make a new one. • If you are getting divorced your husband or wife may still inherit from you until the divorce is final and this can take a while. Change your will immediately to take into account your current wishes. • Tax rules change at least every year and sometimes more often so it is important to take these into account and amend your will accordingly • If you have more children or grandchildren then you may wish to include the new addition(s) into your will • Has a beneficiary of your will got failing health or perhaps they may need to go into a care home. Do you want the money you leave them to be claimed for care home fees. Making a will is an opportunity to consider all sorts of things such as who you would want to wind up your affairs when you die, who would look after your children and so on. Making your wishes clear at the outset means there are no arguments later about what you would or wouldn’t have wanted. It makes the whole process so much clearer and easier for those who are left behind and gives you peace of mind for the future.

Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night are but a distant memory and the countdown to Christmas is well underway. Many local businesses rely on the festive period so please, before you set off to the White Rose Centre, take a look around your local retailers – you might find just what you’re looking for without driving to the other side of the city. Our local businesses generally offer a friendly smile and great customer service too – another couple of reasons to keep it local.

Aireborough Rotarians Raise the Roof The Hepworth Band graced the stage at Yeadon Town Hall for a third consecutive year at The Rotary Club of Aireborough’s fifteenth annual brass band concert on 26 October. As current British Open Grand Shield Champions, they are now ranked number 15 in the “World of Brass” ratings. That evening they were under the baton of Frank Renton – himself an accomplished trumpeter though better known as a conductor with a long and distinguished career in the army and, now, as a presenter with the BBC.
BBC’s Frank Renton provided entertaining and informative commentary between numbers.
With the Diamond Jubilee in mind, the evening’s programme included a range of pieces with royal connections – though perhaps “Singing in the Rain” (usefully 1952) was a little tenuous. Frank Renton kept the evening bubbling along by introducing each selection with commentary and personal anecdotes. Apart from local charities, the evening also raised funds for The Army Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes. Enquiries about the Rotary Club and its activities should be made to club secretary Tony Scaife on 0113 2588007.

Leeds Trinity Celebrates Feast Day Faces old and new gathered at Leeds Trinity University College to celebrate Holy Mass on it’s patronal feast day. The celebration was led by Diocese of Leeds Administrator Monsignor John Wilson. He was assisted on the altar by Leeds Trinity chaplain Monsignor Paul Grogan and two local priests from the Verona Fathers amongst other clergy. Students and recent graduates helped with readings for the mass whilst others provided the music and served on the altar. Mgr Wilson spoke eloquently in his sermon preaching about the need for Leeds Trinity to stand out in tough economical times. He also spoke of the need for faith and education to stand together in the nurturing of fresh talent. Tributes were paid to departing Principal Freda Bridge who joined the congregation for the last time before retiring at Christmas. Speaking after the event Mgr Grogan said, “I was delighted by the way our patronal feast day went this year. Mgr Wilson preached beautifully. He pointed out that while Leeds Trinity needs to "stand in the marketplace" we need to do so "as a cathedral of education where learning and faith jointly point heavenward, like twin spires lifting our gaze and our spirit." It's a great image which captures the particular identity of this institution.”

a letter from horsforth churches together Dear Chris, Covered has reported on a number of events which Horsforth Churches Together has hosted over the years and we are very grateful for its support for our community based events but I had to write following your recent article on ‘Hope in the Park’. On Saturday 22nd September, approximately 600 members of the Horsforth community enjoyed an afternoon of activity, music and fun in Hall Park. Many of them indulged in a hot dog while children had their faces painted or played in the football cage. All of this was provided free of charge by Horsforth Churches Together – the group of 10 Churches in Horsforth representing five different denominations. The feedback we have received about this event has been universally positive. People who attended were genuinely grateful for the opportunity to come together as a community. We were therefore sorry to read your very brief article about the event in the most recent edition of Covered. Unfortunately it contained some inaccuracies but more importantly it did not capture the tremendous community spirit present on that day. Andy Lloyd – Chair, Horsforth Churches Together"
editor’s note Thanks for your feedback on our article Andy. We strive to ensure that all content in Covered genuinely reflects the event, group, club or society we are supporting at the time. Occasionally we get it wrong – on this occasion we inferred that the event involved only the Anglican Church and that was not the case – I’m happy to set the record straight, 5 denominations were involved. Apologies from the author and the editor if the article was a little clumsy, no offence was intended.

Finance Matters Editor Chris Barnham investigates a financial issue that might affect the residents of this area. There is a lot of talk in the press at the moment about tax, and in particular a general condemnation of “aggressive” tax planning. What does this mean though, and how do we distinguish between the “acceptable” use of tax breaks and the “unacceptable” use of loopholes? The key is to understand that there is always some kind of trade off involved in a tax break endorsed by HMRC. The tax man allows you to save tax if you do something that he (or rather the government) approves of.
A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP
This may be saving for a pension, investing in ISAs or other less well known vehicles designed to help startup companies, fledgling industries or for example green technology. The government wants you to be self-sufficient in your old age, they want you to save/ invest and they want to promote entrepreneurialism and certain market sectors (including film making, beer brewing and alterative energy). They want you to give to charities (and incidentally political parties). “Clever” tax wheezes designed just to do nothing more than reduce your bills are very rarely under the taxman’s radar, and as such are vulnerable to changes in legislation which can make them very difficult (and expensive) to unwind. In short, genuine tax reliefs are there because the government wants you to save and invest, to become financially independent of the state and to encourage both charitable giving and the support of certain business sectors. Proper tax planning means understanding the available reliefs and using them responsibly. The benefits can be substantial - but they are rarely without strings.

PLANNING MATTERS There has been a lot of talk in the media recently about the Government’s planning policies. Here are my own views.
Rawdon Fun Day Charity Auction 2013
I am opposed to further encroachment on greenbelt land in Leeds. The preservation of the countryside and the unique nature of our villages and towns is an essential part of the planning process. Given the pressure from Government to deliver more housing, its impact must be controlled by using the Neighbourhood Planning provisions set out in the Localism Act 2011. That means participation in the Core Strategy process.
The Core Strategy is the document that sets out the overall strategy and core policies for the area. It will guide the delivery of development and investment for Leeds over the coming years. Leeds City Council are currently reviewing and revising theirs and it is due out for public consultation in December. I fully support the process. It enables communities to have much more local control over development and is Rawdon Fun Day raises funds for Yorkshire Air essential for securing truly sustainable development. Sky TV & Foreign Satellite TV Specialists Despite adverse weather conditions last year’s Rawdon Fun Day was a huge success and the organisers intend to build on that this year. Kicking things off in 2013 will be a charity auction on Saturday 26th January with a celebrity auctioneer. More Hands to the Pumps at The Bridge The Bridge Inn, Low Lane, Horsforth has just entered an innovative partnership with the Charnwood Training Group and three new apprentices Drew Bell, Kristi Vahejoe and Scott Garrett. Based in Nottingham, Charnwood Training is a government approved and appointed provider of apprenticeships nationwide in the hospitality industry – pubs, hotels and restaurants to you and me. In the case of Drew, Kristi and Scott, the apprenticeship comprises twelve months of structured training on the job, including periodical assessment by Charnwood. Rachel Jenkinson, manager of The Bridge Inn; “This is both groundbreaking and exciting for us. And a little daunting – we now have a formal responsibility to provide these young people with relevant training in the licensed trade. But three extra pairs of hands, and their energy, will enable The Bridge to explore different areas and levels of customer service. And this is very much a two-way street – the placements give them the opportunity to learn not only a trade, but also some important life and employment skills which they will be able use elsewhere.”

‘A Horsforth and Rodley Walk’ by the Walking Englishman
Do you live in or near Horsforth/Rodley? If so you can walk in delightful countryside without using the car or public transport. How? Follow me and I will show you. Start: Woodside Tavern Distance: 6.7 miles Time: Three hours
very quiet Calverley Lane before walking up the Bar Lane bridleway to cross the busy A65 Rawdon Road. After crossing Rawdon Road follow the footpath into West End estate where you will soon reach the woodland of Hunger Hills. Great views of Horsforth, Tinshill and Cookridge can be found there. Then walk down into the Troy area of Horsforth and down Station Road past Horsforth Station before turning in to Haigh Wood Road. A walk through Haigh Wood then completes the journey and takes you back to the ring road and the start of the walk.
Staying in the environs of Horsforth and nearby Rodley you can enjoy a walk in woodland, along a riverside, then on a canal towpath before climbing Happy Walking, to more woodland and open land overlooking Horsforth to take in breath-taking views over the The Walking Englishman urban landscape. A series of natural springs occur through the wood and the paths are well maintained with plenty of signs indicating the routes through the wood. It is a credit to Leeds City Council that they keep the area so well. After reaching the end of the woodland walk follow Abbey Road for 200 yards before leaving by a footpath towards the River Aire. Now enjoy following the river upstream to Newlay Bridge, Pollard Lane. From the bridge walk up a quiet road for a few yards until you reach the towpath of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal. The next three kilometres are spent enjoying a walk to Calverley Bridge. From the Railway Inn you can follow a track to a stone bridge which takes you over the River Aire onto the

Stuart Andrew MP It has been a busy month in Westminster, with MPs back in the thick of it with the end of the conference season. Leeds MPs have once again been able to raise the issue of Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Unit following the announcement from the Secretary of State for Health that an independent panel would be looking at the Safe and Sustainable Review into children’s heart surgery services. I have long spoken out in Parliament about the countless flaws and inaccuracies of the Review and am pleased that the process by which the decision to close the Leeds Unit was reached will be examined by an independent party. As Private Parliamentary Secretary to Rt Hon Francis Maude MP I have been learning more about the excellent work which the Cabinet Office has been carrying out since the election and have been amazed at some of the results which Francis and his team have achieved. For example, the Government exited over 1.2 million square miles of property and reduced the size
of its estate by 12%. That is the size of 174 Wembley pitches. £3.7 billion of efficiency savings were made in the first year of the Efficiency and Reform Group, a group set up by this Government, with a further £5 billion is expected to be saved for 2011-12. Finally, as I write this column, Remembrance Sunday is just a few days away, with services to be held all over the constituency, several of which I will be attending along with many others from the area. It is so important that we honour those brave men and women who laid down their lives defending ours and I hope that as many people as possible will come out and show their support on the day.

carpetbaggers Guiseley’s Carpetbaggers Theatre group offers something for the whole family, with the chance to see local talent tread the boards right on your doorstep. The emphasis is on community with support from local people and businesses, such as the Wetherby Whaler.
Stars of the show: Jane Steadman as Robinhood and Lynne Howell as Maid Marian
President Martin Holmes formed the group in 2010 when he was inspired to create a non-profit theatre group in which anybody could have a go, Carpetbaggers introduced their sell out pantomime The Wizard of Wharfedale. In 2012 after another smash - When the lights go on again the group showcased their versatility with One Day More, a cabaret evening featuring popular songs of the shows. Carpetbaggers’ new production is Robin Hood, and given they had an Elvis impersonator in their first ever show, you get some idea of the fun surrounding this merry band of people. Keri Cromack - on the Way to Stardom? Keri Cromack, from Bramley, could be one step closer to the big time on 24 November when, at Dewsbury Town Hall, she will be competing in the Area Final of Open Mic UK 2012 – the UK’s largest musical competition for singers and solo musicians. The next date would be the Grand Final in London on 13 January. Seventeen-year-old Keri is a familiar face and voice at live music venues throughout north Leeds, including The Commercial in Pudsey and Grey Horse in Horsforth. At one time alongside three similarly aged musicians, now just the one, she is vocalist in the duo Roadside Light. Keri studies the performing arts, and music, at Leeds West Academy. Her talent as a vocalist came to light in 2009 when she was joint winner in the Bramley Has Talent competition.

Newlaithes Primary School’s Open Art Day A regular and award-winning participant in the annual October nationwide art and educational initiative, The Big Draw, Horsforth Newlaithes opened their doors to around 150 pupils plus parents on Saturday 20 October. The chosen theme was things the pupils noticed on their ways to school – each piece of art was then put on a giant map showing its position relative to the school. Some ingenuity had to be used when placing drawings of, say, dolphins. But why should a child’s artistic imagination be constrained by rules?
Putting art on the map at Newlaithes. When finished, these youngsters’ works of art were to be added to the giant map on the gym floor.

35,000 Roofs And Counting! The worst rainfall for more than 30 years has brought misery and mess to many. It may have damaged a flat roof in your home or business. The Flat Roof Company has fitted more than 35,000 roofs on homes, schools and commercial premises around Yorkshire. This success is, in part, due to its use of new materials such as ‘Tuffdek’ (reinforced polyester laminate) and its new complementary system, ‘Tufflex’ – encapsulating the roof with no joins and minimising the chances of a leak. They have gone even further by introducing a super efficient insulating material into new or repaired flat roofs. The appropriately named “Warm Roof” is a foil-backed insulating board up to ten times more efficient than the fibre glass quilting normally used. Up to 30% of heat can be lost through a flat roof, but the “Warm Roof” reduces that to under 5%, an obvious saving on heating bills.
“Over 25 years, we have built our expertise and reputation for quality work and material” said director Kevin Moody. “In the unlikely event of problems in the future, they know we’ll be here. Some companies do a job offering a 25 year guarantee and then go bust, leaving a worthless warranty. Our 25 year warranty is insurance-backed, so will be honoured no matter what”. The Flat Roof Company built up such a good reputation in the industry that it was often approached by others wanting to emulate them. The company now operates carefully trained and regulated franchises and has a network of 20 around the county. “We are fully licensed by the British Board of Agreements, a watchdog in our industry” says Kevin. “We are subject to regular quality checks before re-licensing, so we know we are doing things right”. Primrose Cottages Put Back in Use by Horsforth Conservative Club
Stuart Andrew MP reflects on his predecessor’s dedication a little over a century ago.
Horsforth Conservative Club is more than meets the eye. The club exterior gives no clues as to the comfortable and well appointed rooms inside – nor the four superb snooker tables. Another less concealed asset is the row of cottages immediately to the right of the club itself. They were opened in 1910 by Marion Oddy, wife of the local mill owner John James Oddy – who had recently lost his seat as Conservative Member of Parliament for Pudsey. The building’s links with the Conservative Party are underlined by the original name Primrose Cottage and the motif of the party’s Primrose League on the original plaque.
Primrose Cottages were a worksite indoors and out while CW Christopher & Sons undertook the total renovation.
The building having fallen into serious dilapidation, Horsforth Conservative Club decided to secure an income by having it converted into three private dwellings – one single and one two bedroom cottage and a two-bedroomed apartment. CW Christopher & Sons started work in April this year and completed in good time for the official re-opening and dedication by current Conservative MP for Pudsey, Stuart Andrew, on Details of availability from Manning Stainton on 20 October. WWI Mystery Remains at Yarnbury Rugby Club On 10 November, Yarnbury Rugby Club combined forces with representatives from Horsforth Royal British Legion to remember and honour those players who fell during The Great War. Eighty people attended a special lunch, then many more a short memorial service and the unveiling of a plaque honouring their names. At the end of WWI, Yorkshire Rugby Union Association requested clubs to submit the names of all members who served, specifying those who were casualties. Yarnbury RFC submitted 63 names, of whom 14 were casualties. But only names and initials were sent in. It has taken several Yarnbury members eighteen months of researching club, Commonwealth War Grave and local records to establish exactly who they were. Apart from one, that is - A Mellor was one of the casualties listed by Yarnbury at the time. But no forename, no age, no address, no details of service. His name is the bottom of the fourteen on the plaque. CWGC records online give 27 WWI casualties with the name A Mellor. Those with addresses include possibilities from Huddersfield and Wakefield. But no immediate or apparent link with Leeds. The mystery remains unsolved.
Kittrick remains focused on league
The plaque commemorating Yarnbury’s WWI fallen was unveiled by YRFC’s past president Raymond Johnson (left), pictured here with RBL representatives John Crossley and Dennis Kitching, YRFC current president David Hornby and event mastermind Dianne Walker.
editor’s note At the risk of offending Yarnbury RFC, it must be said that man does not live by rugby alone. Perhaps a memorial near your home or workplace – or maybe one in your school or college – includes the name A Mellor. If so then please let me know - Covered magazine would dearly love to help YRFC complete their Book of Remembrance.

If we can bring in a bit of money and get some more supporters here then promotion is the priority this campaign. that is what we want.” The Blue Square Bet North side has missed out on the top tier of non league football in the play-offs for The Lions’ boss has mixed feelings about who he two successive years. He cites Crawley Town promotion and missed out by a whisker both times. as an example for his troops to follow; “Anything can happen in cup football. Edwards: It’s too early to judge success of ‘On The Road’ games Leeds Carnegie Head Coach Diccon Edwards insists the success of the club’s new ‘on the road’ initiative will only become apparent at the end of the season. The club announced at the beginning of the season that a certain percentage of their home games would be taken to smaller grounds across the region, in an attempt to foster better working relationships with local clubs. The first ‘home’ fixture to be staged away from the Headingley Carnegie Stadium was the narrow British and Irish Cup defeat to Championship newcomers Jersey at York RUFC. Despite the fixture attracting a crowd of just 820, Edwards is adamant that such a scheme should not be judged purely on attendances and results.

Brendan Jordan has lived in Leeds all his life. He worked at Bridgecraft for eighteen years before setting up JORDAN UPHOLSTERY “I’ve been manufacturing suites for the best part of 30 years. Although we’ve traditionally supplied to trade recently we’ve made the decision to open our doors to the general public. With us, you’re buying direct from the manufacturer, so you can have your choice of style, size and fabric without paying silly money for it. All of our furniture is hand made in our on-site factory so we control the quality from start to finish and are able to offer you exceptional value for money.”
