SID’S ON THE SLITHER AND WE WANT HIM BACK!
Liz burton John Gledhill ben cropper Ivor Hughes eric wells Welcome to another packed edition of Covered – the magazine with commitment to the community. It would be trite to add my own festive greetings to everyone else’s, bad manners if I didn’t. So, here they are. But what I’d like to say more than anything is a big thank you to everyone who has helped Covered not only carry the title through its first full calendar year, but also release a sister edition in the Pudsey area. That’s not all – a third edition is planned for Otley/Ilkley early in the New Year - cementing our position as the area’s best distributed monthly. Changes achieved during 2012 haven’t only been external. We now have large well appointed offices in West Park. We have a yet wider pool of contributors and a dedicated sales team - though I’m still a long way from having a corporate jet. Or company car for that matter. But Covered would not have made it to where it is today without the continued support of the communities by way of readers, organisations happy to share their news and any number of officials and official bodies willing to do the same. Then there’s the support from our advertisers who, at the end of the day, make it all possible. Did I forget to mention the team? Them too, I suppose – they’ll cry otherwise. “Of the community, by the community and for the community.” That’s what I say (Abraham Lincoln nicked it from me). Yours in genuine gratitude,
Chris Barnham Editor

New Year
new you! What better time is there to recreate yourself than the New Year? We all fall into the habit of declaring our New Year's resolutions over a glass of champagne and then two weeks later reaching for a carton of cigarettes or ignoring healthy salads for tasty treats. How about adopting a new persona without having to make empty, clichĂŠ resolutions?
1
The Right Side of the Bed
'But what if my bed's against the wall?' Don't be silly, it's just an expression. You are in control of your attitude just as much as you're in control of which side you get out of bed; if you feel there's a wall of stressful responsibilities blocking it, then knock it down with an attitude of positivity! Start each morning by focusing on the things that make you smile, rather than on the fuss the snow may cause this morning; it may be a loved one, your favourite TV show or even a favourite restaurant you'll be eating at over the weekend which encourages you.
It certainly won't occur overnight like good ol' pessimistic Ebenezer Scrooge, but give it a go and you'll be surprised by how much a positive attitude changes a day's outcome. Can't think of anything optimistic? Then stay in bed and be miserable! The key to productivity is positivity.
2
Helpful Habits
Who says that New Year’s resolutions have to be applied instantly? But what better way to make a new you than to start kicking old habits and bringing in the new? Sure, smoking's a habit, but pressuring

yourself to stop for the New Year may worsen the stress that causes you to smoke - you may start feeling disappointed by your failure to do so. Take your time! Try developing some new habits as the new year approaches, they may eventually become as addictive as tobacco! Try upping your water intake; you will feel revitalised every day. Carry a diary containing your weekly schedule, or even manage your money more meticulously; it will make you feel top of the world - never again will you have to look into your bank account and feel disappointed. Around Christmas, this is a lifesaver! Release your inner Da Vinci!
Everybody has the capability to be creative - too often is the word 'can't' used. 'I can't draw!' 'I can't cook!' 'I can't play guitar!' Can't, or won't? Even the world's greatest artists, musicians and writers had to start somewhere! Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times before finally inventing the light bulb. We’re not saying you'll become a famous inventor with perseverance, but creativity is a wonderful outlet, a great way to relax and ease stress, and an excellent approach to feeling good about yourself. Learn an instrument, start painting. Even write down a few little limericks or anecdotes, releasing your inner thoughts and emotions. Best of all, you may amaze yourself - and if not at first, practice makes perfect.
Everybody has the ability to be creative - could the next Picasso come from Leeds?

Why send your child to Stage School? Learning the performing arts brings benefits: children become more confident, and are able to express themselves creatively with more certainty. They learn balance and poise in Dance, and improve their coordination (this can even help handwriting!). Dance is also good exercise and helps people keep trim. In Singing children learn to work with a group, listening carefully to others, and are taught a range of singing styles. In Drama they also learn to listen and to discuss, so that they can contribute collaboratively as work is created. They learn how to project their voice, and to speak confidently. These are all skills that will help them in later life. If they want a career in any of the performing arts, they will find competition intense, and a good Stage School should provide useful training to supplement what they do at School or College. The Performing Arts can be very hands on – children do not have to do much reading and very little writing. Creative children who may sometimes struggle in school can find it a wonderful way to express theirselves. Some parents want their quiet child to gain confidence; Stage School is a great place for these children. Some of our greatest actors are sometimes shy and quiet offstage, but they find a release in acting. However, the most important element for the children is that they should have fun, make new friends, and have a chance to perform. Children love performing!

Local Dancer Reaches World Championship Finals in Boston Matthew Sellers, aged 10 and a pupil at Newlaithes School, Horsforth, has won his way through to the finals of the World Irish Dancing Championships, to be held in Boston between 24 and 31 March. That’s Boston Massachusetts, not Boston Spa. Matthew trains at the Joyce O’Donnell School of Irish Dancing (Cross Gates and West Park) and is one of three that the school is putting forward in different championship age classes. Each has qualified through success in the British National Championships. Success doesn’t come cheap. Matthew’s family has to raise the £1500 necessary for him to attend and compete. At the helm is Horsforth grandmother Sylvia Sellers. The dancers are pictured holding three Christmas cakes baked by Sylvia, raising £277 in a “guess the weight” competition – and weighed independently by Covered at Sylvia’s home in December. Future fundraising events include an Irish Dance Night at Gazi’s Restaurant, Hall Park, on 22 January (7.30pm) with two courses being offered for £9. Then there is to be a celidh at Leeds Irish Centre on 20 February (again from 7.30pm). Anyone wanting further details, or able to offer help or sponsorship, can contact Sylvia Sellers on 0113 2590113.

Horsforth Christmas Illuminations As is customary this time of year, a large number of locals congregated at The Green on 1 December to witness the official switching-on of the town’s tree. And to hear what their council leader had to say. And join in singing a few carols – usefully assisted by Horsforth Leeds City Brass Band and choirs from Froebelian and Saint Mary’s schools. And to see Santa. It’s what you do.
Taking the plunge. Jude Arbuckle, leader of Horsforth Town Council, and Councillor Ann Castle, Lord Mayor of Leeds, joining forces to switch on the lights of Covered’s Horsforth Christmas tree.
The evening was, as always, a delight. Though this time, unfortunately, Santa implicated himself in more burglaries. Addressing and reassuring children living in homes with very narrow chimneys, or none at all, he let it slip that he had a set of magic keys that guaranteed him access through any front door. Northwest Leeds Police NPT was there in force – we may not be seeing Santa again for some time...

Finance Matters In this column Editor Chris Barnham discusses financial issues that might affect the residents of this area. It’s Christmas time again. For most of us this time this is the most expensive time of the year. The question is, though, if this is really a problem.
A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP
The truth is that money has two values. The first what you can do with it (ie enjoy yourself - it only happens once a year). The second is the value of the knowledge that you have financial security. If you imagine having a thousand pounds to spend you can either enjoy it now, or you can save it and enjoy it later. The benefit of the second option is that you still get to enjoy the thousand pounds when you spend it, but in the meantime you have enjoyed the knowledge that you have a thousand pounds. Savings and investments give you freedom and relieve the stress of worrying about the next big or unforeseen bill - or feeling that at some point you might have to. The problem of course is that you might never spend it, or when you do get to spend it you don’t enjoy it as much as you will now. The key is to get the balance right, and to respect your future needs at least as much as your immediate desires. In short there is nothing wrong with spending your money as long as you keep the bigger picture in mind. Avoid a financial hangover by deciding what you can afford, but as long as you keep that in focus there’s nothing wrong with enjoying yourself - especially at this time of year.

Train Late? Only If We Say So!
Yet another motorist leaving yet another charitable or community event feeling less than charitable or neighbourly towards LCC
There has been a lot of recent comment on social media about the punctuality, or lack thereof, on the Harrogate line in general and at Horsforth Station in particular. Maybe more than other stations on the line because of the large quantity of out-of-area commuters that drive in to take advantage of the Leeds Metro subsidised fares. The question of the extent to which these delays are attributable to recent and extensive works on the line and related information systems will become apparent in the New Year when, hopefully, all work will have been completed.
But, in the meantime, information boards at Horsforth and other suburban stations can be misleading. Some still rely on part-automated systems where human input is necessary to keep the Customer Information Screen (CIS) up-to-theminute. Otherwise late trains can be shown as being on time or not at all. The picture shows how a 1741 departure from Horsforth to York had gone missing from the display while it was in fact four minutes late – and counting. The only clue, for taxis and other vehicles arriving to pick up passengers, was In our previous December and January issues we that the waiting room was still busy. HTC about our suggestion of yellow-lining the prohibited areas, and therefore bringing the crime wave to an end, LCC Councillor Chris Townsley was on hand to hear about the afternoon’s festivities. He told Covered; “Oh, not again. Your suggestion of yellow-lining is good, but probably unworkable due to the provisions of the planning regulations and Road Traffic Act. The legislative process could be lengthy and cost more than the job itself. But I have already taken your concerns on board and have written to LCC asking that the present marking of designated bays, mainly in cobblestones, be reinforced with white paint.”

Keeping Your Trees Happy in the New Year – and Beyond After record rainfall during a cool summer, then floods and gales and now with freezes threatened on top of waterlogged soil, our trees have never had it so bad. Not to mention the question of whether the spread of the imported disease of Ash dieback can be arrested and eradicated, unlike the Dutch elm disease that hit our stocks so badly in the late seventies.
Christmas a Little Earlier at Cookridge Holy Trinity Enterprisingly, to avoid a log jam of their seasonal festivities and services and maximise availability for volunteers and visitors, Holy Trinity Church Cookridge brought their Christmas Fayre a week forward to 25 November. Beavers, Scouts and Guides were there in force helping out.
Bramhope Methodist Church - Responsible for Shortage of Chrismas Trees?
It’s not only the trees themselves that are under threat. Trees close to houses or highways can do serious damage. And it doesn’t take a whole tree to cause havoc with your drainage system or less robust structures such as fences, greenhouses, garages, sheds or conservatories. You may be insured, but next year’s premiums would be under threat – especially if you benefit from the no-claims discounts introduced to home insurances a few years ago. There has never been a better time to call in the experts, the professionals. A healthy check and any diagnosis can be swift. Remedial action can be prescribed there and then – unless of course samples of soil or vegetation have to be sent away. But better to be safe than very sorry indeed. Then preventative medicine by way of a care, preservation and maintenance plan.
Bramhope Methodist Church, also known as “Cathedral You know it makes sense. of the Dales” due to its size and magnificent stained glass windows (unusual for Methodist premises), had wall to wall beautifully decorated Christmas trees lining the entire inside perimeter on 7 and 8 December during their special Christmas Tree Festival. Trees were sponsored by local businesses and decorated either by them or by volunteers – the local Brownies certainly seemed to have been busy, if the credit labels were anything to go by.
This massive beech tree at Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster was found to have a rotted trunk last year. It was felled by professionals rather than left to chance.

Ayckbourn's Chaotic Comedy Coming to Adel Adel Players bring us Alan Ayckbourn's classic Seventies comedy Bedroom Farce in January. The production is being staged at the Adel War Memorial Hall LS16 8DE from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 January (7.30pm). Four couples, three bedrooms... too much excitement for one night? In Bedroom Farce, Ayckbourn turns his humorous gaze onto relationships - there's the long married and short of patience, the young at heart and old flames too - as circumstances conspire to prevent much chance for romance in the suburbs. As the action hops between the different houses, the audience is able to share in the laughter on an entertaining evening behind closed doors.
Bedroom Farce - Kate is often the subject of Malcolm’s pranks, while Trevor and Susannah (below) are forever at each other’s throats.
The play is the second of the 2012-13 season for Adel Players, an amateur dramatics group founded in 1945. Their October production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons was described as "superb" by amateur theatre magazine Sardines. They also received rave reviews for their 2011-12 season - When We Are Married, Blithe Spirit and Arsenic and Old Lace. Tickets for Bedroom Farce cost £7 and bookings can be made on 0113 275 5585. next gen transport First I would like to wish all readers of Covered a Happy and Healthy New Year ALLOTMENTS I was recently asked about the availability of allotments. There are a lot of people on waiting lists for a popular allotment sites. I asked the Council what plans they had. They do have do have a number of new sites planned, including one at High Ash Drive in Alwoodley. It will have 16 half size plots, all available to those on the current waiting lists. Unfortunately all the other sites in this area have waiting lists too. But if people are prepared to travel then there are other sites with plots available. NEXT GENERATION TRANSPORT (NGT) In the next few months there will be more information about the NGT scheme. 45,000 leaflets are about to go out to homes, offices and businesses along the initial route. They will contain facts, figures and a map for people to give their views and feedback. Following this, in spring/summer 2013 there will be an application for a Transport & Works Act Order which is likely to result in a public inquiry. Updates about the project can be obtained by following @ ngttrolleybus on Twitter and at the New Generation Transport page on Facebook. The leaflet explains that people can give their feedback via ngtmetro.com or by emailing ngtinfo@ wypte.gov.uk or by writing to NGT, Wellington House, Leeds LS1 2DE. NGT’s Line One will run from Holt Park in north Leeds into and through Leeds city centre and on to Stourton in the south of the city near the M1/M621intersection. With around 3,000 Park & Ride spaces in total, the route runs along the A660 through Lawnswood, Headingley and Hyde Park. It passes the universities and the new Leeds Arena and crosses the city centre via Park Row, City Square and the Rail Station before heading south via Clarence Dock and Hunslet to Stourton. I would be very interested to hear your views on NGT. Please write to me at Civic Hall or contact me by email. Cllr. Stuart Andrew MP Creativity has been the word of the month in the Pudsey c o n s t i t u e n c y, with a number of local schools participating in the ‘We Made It!’ competition. This new and exciting competition set schoolchi ldren the challenge to design a brand new invention, with the winning entry m a nu f a c t u r e d in a real factory. As a judge I was able to see all of the entries from my constituency first hand and was bowled over by the excellent standard of designs and inventions. These ranged from bug repellers to docking stations and all were unique creations which the pupils had clearly spent a lot of time working on. I was therefore pleased to discover that the winning entry from my constituency, ‘The Complete Shades’ by Jack Poole, Robert Ward and Lewis Woodhead of Pudsey Grangefield School, are among six of the entries selected as national winners. I am thrilled to be able to attend the awards ceremony in Parliament and look forward to meeting these bright students from Pudsey. I was also honoured to be asked to host a lobby event at Bliss, the special care baby charity’s parliamentary event on Tuesday 20 November. This was a chance for Bliss, MPs and parents to discuss the importance of the frontline nursing workforce on babies born too soon, too small and too sick in England. It came a few days after World Prematurity Day and one year after the launch of Bliss’ SOS campaign (save our special care babies, save our special care nurses). I first became involved with Bliss through my constituent Nicola Emsley and have worked with her on her campaign to improve services for premature babies in Leeds and would like to take this opportunity to recognise her tireless efforts and campaigning. And finally, I would like to wish all of my constituents the very best over the Christmas period.

WETHERBY WHALER IN GUISELEY BRINGS BACK MEMORABLE FESTIVE TRADITION Seasonal cheer. PCSOs Davina Arundale and Gavin Mitchell in the foyer of Morrisons Horsforth
Tis the Season to be Wary Neighbourhood Policing Teams throughout the area have embarked on an anti-Christmas crime initiative – at a time when people are often carrying more cash or have valuable gifts signposted in their cars or under the Christmas tree. This year the focus is on the prevention of burglaries. PCSOs will be giving advice on how vulnerable europofile locks, prone to “snapping”, should be replaced. Timers should be used to give observers the impression you’re at home. Don’t give burglars a helping hand by leaving bins under windows. Consider using anti-climb paint and installing security lights. The list goes on – we’ll let the NPT finish it. Also on offer will be free literature and merchandise such as marking pens and timers, and goodies to help raise awareness among youngsters. There is also an open invitation for PCSOs to conduct home security inspections. The NW Leeds NPT schedule includes Thursday 20 December at Asda Holt Park (4.30-8pm), Friday 21 at Morrisons Yeadon (4.30-8pm) and concludes on Saturday 22 with Morrisons Horsforth (112pm) and Asda Holt Park (4.30-8pm).
The Wetherby Whaler restaurant in Guiseley has brought back a much-loved Christmas tradition in tribute to the site’s history and former owner Harry Ramsden. A huge Christmas tree with presents for young diners formed part of the Christmas celebrations at the Harry Ramsden’s restaurant in Guiseley, and the Murphy family, owners of the Wetherby Whaler were keen to resurrect the festive custom. Philip Murphy, Co-owner of the Wetherby Whaler, said: “We are extremely proud to bring this tradition back. The Harry Ramsden’s Christmas tree was such a special spectacle that families from all over the country used to come and see it. Customers have often told me about their recollections of the tree and we wanted to bring these fond memories back to life for them. After decorating it over the last couple of days, the tree looks fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing our customer’s faces when they come and see it.” If you can’t make it to Guiseley then the Wetherby Whaler group includes another four high quality fish and chip restaurants, in Wetherby, Wakefield, York and Pudsey. Current owners Phillip and Janine Murphy began trading in fish and chips in 1969 so you can be assured the trip will be well worth it. Established 1983

The Men In Tights Cast
Surprise Package for Covered Xmas came early for Covered when we were invited to review Carpetbagger’s second ever panto at Guiseley Theatre! As the wise witch says at the start of Robin Hood & His Men in Tights, “If many retypes are right up you’re street then you’re in for a treat”. Carpetbaggers don’t
This is where the Carpetbaggers star really shines - a combination of classic panto with contemporary touches. Like Dame Judy Denchers rummaging around in her handbag, “My bag’s full of the latest technology” she declares before pulling out, literally, a blackberry, an apple, and an egg box – “It’s an egg box 360!” she cackles. But just as Xmas wouldn’t be the same without sweets you can’t have a decent panto without songs and you’ve only to look at the catchy numbers here to know that the proof is in the pudding. Disney’s Under the Sea becomes, “Nice cup o’ tea”, while the men in tights’ Finland song (Robin: “I said England”) is sheer comedy gold. Robin Hood was like getting Disney for Xmas – you can’t go wrong – it’s fun for the kids and the adults get a laugh too! Eric Knowles explained to me what sets Moorcroft apart from many of its competitors
Covered Roadshow Student John Gledhill got more than he had bargained for on one early assignment through Covered The employment team at Leeds Trinity University and Covered magazine have negotiated an innovative staggered placement scheme. Spreading the usual six week block placement over six months gives students the opportunity to report a far wider range of events and to be part of the full cycle of several editions rather than a snapshot one or two. One early surprise was that one Covered photographer is widely published in the international antiques and lifestyle press and would be inviting us on external assignments. London, Paris? Not yet – but Barnsley was a good start. BBC Antiques Roadshow’s Eric Knowles was VIP speaker and greeter at a promotion by Moorcroft Pottery – a select decorative brand adhering to arts nouveau and deco traditions that made it famous in the first place. In Cannon Hall, home of Barnsley Museum’s own collection of antique Moorcroft. Eric Knowles in action was itself an education. A Northern Soul DJ before starting his career at Bonhams, he knew how to work an audience – whether two or twenty or, in my case, just one. Having time for, and engaging with, all who put and keep him on TV and in print – and as a director at Moorcroft. Other lessons on the day? Well, apart from Moorcroft being outside a student budget, it quickly became apparent that celebs such as Eric are quick to accept you as a professional if you have the confidence and ability to present yourself as one. Still working on those, and glad to be getting chances such as this.
The UK’s largest youth drama event is Schools Shakespeare Festival where, every year, over 700 schools perform thirty-minute versions of his plays – not in the school hall, but on stage at 90 fully commercial theatres throughout the country. Although the text is condensed, the Elizabethan language isn’t updated – a serious test of the memory, language and acting skills of pupils as young as eleven. This year, local primary school entries included years six from Bramhope Primary School (performing Macbeth) and Pudsey Primrose Hill Primary School (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Both gave early evening performances at Leeds Carriageworks Theatre - Bramhope trod the boards on 13 November and Pudsey on the 15th. Bramhope’s production was managed by teacher Jonathan Feeley, who organised and directed 6 principal characters, 22 in support and 5 stage technicians. He told Covered “This was our first experience with this year group. It was a resounding success on the night. It gave our pupils the opportunity to put their own spin on the storyline then perform it in a public theatre. “They chose to adopt the theme ‘Gangsters and Molls’ and set Macbeth in a 1920s prohibition Chicago rather than a Scottish heath! The teamwork, rehearsals and dedication all paid off. Although there were outstanding individual performances, it was pleasing to see other children who are not usually so confident come to the fore and gain new found confidence from the experience.”
Year six pupils at Bramhope Primary School chose prohibition Chicago as their setting for Macbeth in this year’s Shakespeare Schools Festival

Plymouth Brethren in the Public Eye in Horsforth Ivor Hughes attended the free lunch advertised by Plymouth Brethren at Horsforth Gospel Hall in Brownberrie Lane in December Small world... Some years ago in a small Dorset village a local businessman built a church, hall, Sunday school and youth club for the community. The denomination was “Plymouth Brethren” – a complete mystery to the locals, including me. Within a short while they were seen as a fundamentalist Christian group. Less ceremony than most, though practising full immersion adult baptism. Taking the bible more literally than others. Reserved. Still, they appeared pretty much in step with the mainstream denominations. Singing from a similar hymn sheet, so to speak.
Some of the congregation there to meet and greet on Horsforth Gospel Hall’s free lunch
Services and Sunday school were open to all. So was the youth club – the only one for miles. Which is how I became familiar with, though not member of, Plymouth Brethren. Founded in the 1820s, it now has 16,000 members in UK and 46,000 worldwide. Horsforth Gospel Hall in December I chatted with several trustees and members of the Horsforth congregation. Had their neighbours in West Moors been right, and how were things forty years later? “Yes, that’s pretty much us, then and now – though in Horsforth we don’t have a Sunday School or youth club. For example, we still don’t make any special fuss about Christmas or Easter because we believe our faith is constant. To focus on those would be a distraction. And some of the church’s women members observe the Biblical requirement that their heads be covered. Maybe with a hat, maybe a token scarf or ribbon. But not all, nor all the time – we’re not the Puritans that our detractors might have you believe. And, yes, we do feel at home with most other Christian denominations.” But what about their being pilloried in some quarters as a closed cult or sect? “We are frustrated by some allegations made in the media. Although we can’t comment on any individual’s experiences elsewhere, we can say for certain that Horsforth Gospel Hall is a public place of Christian worship. See how many guests are here for lunch. We are a Christian denomination acting entirely within
Two of the volunteers cooking and serving on the day.
the teachings and instruction of the Bible – nothing added, nothing taken away. All are welcome to our services, 5pm each Sunday.” And the threatened loss of charitable status? “That isn’t because of any question of whether we are a genuine religious organisation. What the Charities Commission is asking is whether the religious and moral teachings of this church - and indeed some others - are of benefit to the wider community. We believe they are, and hope they will come to agree.” The next open day at Horsforth Gospel Hall will be in the New Year. Enquiries to Roy Harding on 07848 452 903 or email enquiries@hght.org.uk

44 Local Sport A typical challenge – Neal Butterworth of Leeds Adel contesting possession with two Leeds players. With the ball travelling around as quickly as it can, you just don’t get the same mass of bodies on the ball as in as in football or rugby – zone discipline is critical.
Two Local Teams Meet in North of England Hockey League With teams as far apart as Lincoln and Sunderland in the North Hockey (Men’s) League Division Two (East), it is quite a rarity for matches to be between sides as local as Leeds Adel Carnegie and Leeds (2nd XI). Although the presence of Leeds University’s 2nd XI in the same twelve-team division means that there are at least six fixtures in the season where neither side has far to travel.
