SID’S ON THE SLITHER AND WE WANT HIM BACK!
Hello and welcome to Edition 25 of Covered – the magazine that delivers. We’re now well into Spring and as I write this note heavy snow is falling. But, fifteen minutes ago the sun was shining, the sky blue and I was outside in just a shirt! I’m sure readers will join me in hoping for some consistent weather, preferably dry and sunny! Speaking of consistency, Covered now reaches 45,000 households across much of Leeds and Ilkley – the highest single home distribution of any editorially led monthly in the area. We try not to reinvent the wheel each month but retain a familiar format – good hyper-local news, views and features complimented by advertising messages from reliable local companies. That said, we’re always keen to hear suggestions and ideas from readers and particularly from volunteer-led or community organisations that would benefit from some publicity. We can’t promise to feature everyone who contacts us, but we’ll try and bring you the best of the bunch. Any companies with a ‘story in their business’ should contact us too – we’re always interested to hear success stories and often include free editorial features for our clients. The deadline for our next edition is 5/4/13 so please get in touch with your news and views as soon as you can. Until next month...

The Cheerful Chilli is a restaurant and tearooms on the East Chevin Road in Otley. Opened in 1999, and previously known as The Ramblers’ tearooms, it is situated in a converted farmhouse and is full of character, with a relaxed atmosphere, fresh flowers and an eclectic mix of work by local artists on the walls. The emphasis here is all about the imaginative menu and the ethos of food bringing people together to have a good time whilst sharing wholesome, home-cooked food.
The Cheerful Chilli Owner and chef David Longfield is passionate that every dish is freshly prepared, even the bread, with the focus being on flavoursome, good value food and the generous portions certainly represent that. The fact that the menu is entirely vegetarian almost seems like an aside, with the majority of customers being meat eaters, simply keen to enjoy the flavoursome and satisfying menu. Having said that, David is personally very aware of the needs of vegetarian and vegan diners and is keen to cater for everyone. He and his team are happy to discuss and create dishes with any dietary requirement in mind. The restaurant menu fuses influences from around the world to create something to suit everyone’s taste. Popular dishes are sweetcorn cakes as a starter, and enchiladas or aubergine involtini for main dishes. Puddings range from a beautiful selection of homemade ice creams to the decadent chocolate nemesis, which is described as not for the faint hearted! Another popular feature is the banquet menu, which is available for 4 or more diners, and is ideal for parties and larger groups. Private dining for up to 80 people can be catered for at The Cheerful Chilli, with customers encouraged to make the venue their own for the evening by bringing their own music, wine, and even decorations. In keeping with the ‘good value’ ethic, The Cheerful Chilli welcomes guests who bring their own drinks and charges £1 corkage, or a new wine and beer menu was also introduced last year offering a good selection of drinks, all suitable for vegetarians.

“As the sign says, everything at The Cheerful Chilli really is made with love”
For the tearooms the menu differs and changes weekly, but generally offers a selection of tarts and sandwiches, as well as a few popular restaurant dishes, and a wide range of cakes and desserts, all of which can be purchased whole to take away. The Cheerful Chilli are popular traders at local farmers’ markets, and also provide outside catering for any event as well as seasonal products to take away; picnic hampers for a summer ramble on the Chevin, or in the outside courtyard, and Christmas puddings and nut roasts later in the year. The future is looking bright too with plans to convert the neighbouring barn by autumn this year. Accessed from the same courtyard, this additional venue will include a second kitchen and large banqueting room with mezzanine floor above, and will be available to cater for larger parties and also to introduce cookery lessons. It’s looking like David and his team will certainly be busy, but with their laid-back yet attentive style, I’m sure they’ll manage just fine. As the sign says, everything at The Cheerful Chilli really is “ made with love”. For more details visit www.thecheerfulchilli.co.uk, or they can be found on Facebook and Twitter @CheerfulChilli

Main
225g plain flour pinch salt 50g lard 50g margarine 30ml water 5 medium red onions 1 cup red wine 1 cup balsamic vinegar 200g brown sugar 300g soft goats’ cheese log Basil, chopped finely Drizzle olive oil
Goat’s Cheese & Red Onion Tart Peel and slice the red onions and put into a pan with the red wine and balsamic vinegar and sugar. Cook down on a low heat until the onions are soft and sweet. To make the pastry, mix flour and salt in bowl and rub in fat. Use knife to mix in cold water to form stiff dough. Knead lightly on a floured surface before rolling out. Blind bake 6 pastry cases in 4 inch tart cases for 5-10 minutes. Fill with cooked red onion mixture before placing a generous slice of goats’ cheese on top. Blend the olive oil with the basil and drizzle on the tarts. Bake for further 15 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Serve with fresh salad.
Dessert
250ml Stout 250g unsalted butter 75g cocoa 400g caster sugar 150 ml pot natural yoghurt 2 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 275g plain flour 2 ½ teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 300g cream cheese 150g icing sugar 125ml double or whipping cream
Chocolate Guinness Cake Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius, and butter and line a 23cm springform tin. Pour the Stout into a large saucepan, add the butter and heat until the butter is melted, at which time you should whisk in the cocoa and sugar. In a bowl, beat the yoghurt with the eggs and vanilla and then pour into the beery, buttery pan and finally whisk in the flour and bicarbonate. Pour the cake batter into the greased and lined tin and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. Leave to cool completely in the tin on a cooling rack before icing. To make icing, lightly whip the cream and the cheese together until smooth. Sieve over the icing sugar and then beat them both together. Ice the top of the black cake so that it resembles the frothy top of the fantastic pint of beer.

New Look For The Old Ball The Old Ball, on the roundabout connecting Horsforth Station, Leeds Trinity and the town centre, reopened to the public on 22 February following a refurbishment. Five until seven was a VIP party – the VIPs being the pub’s regulars. Star performances on the evening were from the new pizza oven and the staff operating and serving from it – the pizzas were so well received that they were kept busy all evening.

Leeds Trinity University Round Up Journalism Week Leeds Trinity University's fifth annual Journalism Week took place in February. Some of the UK’s leading Journalists visited Leeds Trinity to share their insight into journalism and give students valuable advice on how to succeed. The week was opened by Sky Sports’ Jeff Stelling, who was joined by an impressive line-up for the week which included ITV News at Ten’s Mark Austin, The Observer’s Julian Coman and ITV Yorkshire’s Duncan Wood and Christine Talbot. The week dealt with issues currently facing the journalism industry, including phone hacking and press regulation which was covered from both angles by Hacked Off Campaign Founder, Brian Cathcart and former tabloid editor Neil Wallis, who was arrested in the phone hacking scandal.
There’s nothing better than speakers finishing up their appearance at Journalism Week by telling us they’d be happy to come back again.” For a full round-up of Journalism Week, including blogs, pictures and YouTube videos of the sessions, visit www.leedstrinity.ac.uk/journalismweek Postgraduate Open Evening Leeds Trinity welcomed lots of potential new students to campus for its final postgraduate open evening for the academic year on Wednesday 27 February. Reflecting on the week, Leeds Trinity’s Head of Journalism, Media and Business, Catherine O’Connor, commented: “We’ve always got to judge the success of this event based on the reaction of the students and they have been buzzing with excitement and have been really inspired by the speakers. The feedback from the speakers has been great too – the students have made an excellent impression on them, particularly with the questions they’ve asked during the sessions.

Froebelian Tradition Continues The first weeks of the New Year are a busy time at The Froebelian School, Horsforth, Leeds. The school’s 18 Year 6 pupils have been busy preparing for and sitting the entrance exams at some of the top secondary schools in Yorkshire and in true tradition of the school’s previous success rate, the children have been celebrating another excellent crop of results. With nine of the eighteen pupils being offered scholarships to Woodhouse Grove School, Gateways School and Harrogate Ladies College, the results are testament to the hard work and commitment the children put in.
ome We c ou! to y
Once again, maintaining the school’s 100% success rate, every pupil within Year 6 has achieved the offer of a place at their chosen senior school. The children received warm praise from Headmaster, Mr John Tranmer, ‘We are very proud of our Year 6 youngsters and the hard work they have put into gaining these incredible results. It is fitting that as the school celebrates its centenary this year, we are continuing to give our tradition of excellent academic performance a ‘flying start’ into the future. I would also like to extend my congratulations to all the teaching staff who have worked so hard to ensure the children have all succeeded in gaining places at their first choice school.’

COOKRIDGE Trackrod Motor Club CARPETS 14 Local Matters
Back in 1981, Alwoodley Community Association found itself with a number of rally enthusiasts. Leeds based, the group wanted to appeal to a wider Yorkshire audience. So, not wanting to adopt a local place name, Trackrod Motor Club was born. They now have a county wide membership of 120. Around a dozen compete in local, national and international amateur events. Around forty are marshals and several hold high office with the UK governing body of all motor sports – RAC Motor Sports Association.
The club meets on Tuesdays. The first Tuesday of the month includes a committee meeting at Old Modernians Association clubhouse, Cookridge. Other Tuesdays are at various pubs. They are responsible for the organisation of two major events - Lookout Rally at Melbourne Airfield, York, (next 14 April) and a national rally, with an international field, staged between Pickering and Scarborough in September. So, how much does it cost to compete? Rod Parkin, chairman; “Around £2000 can buy you a decent historical class vehicle, maybe something like a Ford Escort. Then another £2000 on safety equipment. £4000 won’t win anything but you’ll have an awful lot of fun. Maintenance and running costs are usually kept to a minimum by family patronage or friendly local suppliers looking for a bit of publicity. But proper sponsorship is non-existent”. Whether curious competitor, wannabe marshal or simply a fan, Rod’s the man to contact on 07850 783555. Three of Trackrod’s committee at Old Mods in February - Richard Goldie (trophies and awards), Andy Turnbull (competition secretary) and Rod Parkin (chairman)

LCC Litter and Dog Fouling Wardens – Pilot Scheme from April
Litter outside Pudsey Civic Hall in March –within twenty yards of a council bin and facing a large police station. Pudsey isn’t on LCC’s latest litter patrol hit list – should it be?
Leeds City Council recently announced a proposed six month pilot scheme where dedicated patrols are to be deployed in trial areas. Parts of Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Guiseley and Rawdon are likely to be included. LCC stated that these patrols are to be in addition to existing resources - presumably meaning police officers, PCSOs and Civil Enforcement Officers (aka traffic wardens) - and that the work is to be done by a private sector company. The company is to invoice LCC for each fixed penalty notice issued, LCC to recoup the cost on collection (of the £75).
How right she was – though daunting at first glance, the 96 page leaflet PB12414 can be found online very easily and is indeed a plain English guide through the complexities. Covered has long supported readers’ sentiments about litter and dog fouling and hopes that LCC’s initiative will educate rather than alienate.
LCC has emphasised that they won’t be setting targets; “the objective is to raise the profile of such problems and attempt to improve behaviour locally”. Nonetheless, from April the company in question will have to issue a quantity of notices just to break even. With that in mind, Covered spoke to Keep Britain Tidy, one of the two agencies primarily behind the legislation (the other is DEFRA). A spokesperson told us; “We support such initiatives, particularly the educational element. Though I’m not personally aware of any schemes where the patrols have been privatised, so to speak.
** wE HAvE mOvEd **
“The core pieces of legislation covering the two offences date back to the nineties though additional legislation also relates to the issue of fixed penalty notices. There is excellent guidance on the DEFRA website about the offences in question, the standard of evidence required and, in particular, when the issue of an FPN may or may not be appropriate.”

Finance Matters In this column Editor Chris Barnham investigates financial issues that might affect resident in the area. The most important thing to remember about managing your money is that it’s not about the money at all. It’s about you, what you want to achieve, how you want to provide for those that you care for.
A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP
The aim is to plan so you can pay for your retirement, for your children’s education, for the expected and for the unexpected. Planning is personal, what you want and how you might achieve what is particular to you. The hidden goal though is to avoid the stress of being in need, and to avoid the stress of worrying that you are facing a looming crisis. Far too many worry about their financial futures, but don’t take the time to do anything about it. Make the time! Crucial to any savings or investment planning is to spend time identifying not just the means but the reasons why. Anticipate where money should be put for different purposes, what should be tied up and what should be immediately available. As a rule of thumb anything longer than five years should be considered for investment, but liquidity needs can override this. Everyone, whatever their circumstances, should take time to look into their future from a financial perspective. Ideally this should be with a professional advisor who understands not just what options are available but also what is realistic, and who can balance liquidity needs against known and unknown probabilities.

Leeds and Bradford Making Friends Leeds and Bradford Friendship Group has been running for twenty years now, under different guises. Typically around a half of the 120 strong retirement fellowship meet on the first Wednesday of the month at Pudsey Civic Hall. Guest speakers on a wide range of subjects entertain between 2 and 3pm, when the meeting breaks for refreshments and general socialising. There are also organised outings, walks and meals. Adel Neighbourhood Forum elects its Leaders At its meeting on 4th February fifteen Members of the Adel Neighbourhood Forum unanimously elected Ian Bond and Nick Brown as its Joint Chairmen. Caroline Anderson was similarly elected to the post of Secretary. Nick Brown is a professional architect who has lived in Adel for 16 years. Nick said, "Adel has a great opportunity to determine its future now, through the creation of the Neighbourhood Plan, and I’m both excited and honoured to have been elected Co-Chair." Ian Bond is a retired senior children’s services manager who has lived in Adel for the last thirty years. His previous job was about making a difference for children through the development of Sure Start children centres in a neighbouring authority. He was a governor at Ralph Thoresby High School for 12 years and Chair of Governors for eight years prior to the new school being built. Ian said "Credit should be given to the whole Community as the first non- Parish Church community to apply for Neighbourhood Forum status. I have been impressed

by the quality and commitment of people coming forward to offer their services." The Neighbourhood Forum hopes to be able to conduct its first public consultation on Saturday 20th April at Adel St John’s C. of E. Primary School on Long Causeway, Adel. This will be the opportunity for Adel to express its views on the future of development in this area and what services and resources we would like to see. The next Adel Neighbourhood Forum will be on 22nd April at which time we would hope to have some preliminary feedback from the consultation. Although these “surveys” are to generate publicity, this time it is backed-up by a report from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) that puts West Yorkshire in 2nd place for burglaries (after London) last year with 13 per 1,000 people, when the national average is 9. Although they say that crime has dropped in the last 10 years. Covered checked the police crime reports (through their newsletter) for the last quarter of 2012 and found that burglaries for October were 19; November 16 and December 20. This doesn’t include vehicle crime or criminal damage. The most notable thefts were mountain bikes from sheds and garages. Some may think who’d nick a bike? But when these bikes can be over £3,000…? Other households targeted are those with europrofile locks on
their Upvc doors that can easily be snapped by molegrips – thefts then included portable items like laptops, tablet devices, mobile phones and car keys. Are we to blame? Very few premises were insecure, but perhaps leaving these items on view doesn’t help – leave them out of sight. And if you have an expensive mountain bike, then why not bolt it to a wall? There are some crimes that there is little you can do about – the theft of wing mirrors and wheel trims – although you can get tamper proof screws for number plates. HARRY POTTER STAR VISITS ST MARY'S SCHOOL Children at St Mary's School, Horsforth were given a special treat on World Book Day, March 7th. Former pupil Matthew Lewis (Nevile Longbottom in the Harry Potter films) dropped in to talk to the children about his experiences on set. The children asked many questions as they gained a fascinating insight into the fantastic books and films. In the spirit of World Book Day, children and staff dressed up as their favourite literary characters and prizes were awarded in all year groups for the best outfits.

Jude Arbuckle Speaks All LS18 households should have received a questionnaire asking for ideas about future development in Horsforth. The Council asks everyone in Horsforth to take the time and effort to complete one, as what you think is very important, in putting together the hopes and wishes for Horsforth. If this isn’t done then developers will continue to look with interest at any green space in Horsforth, and Leeds City Council will be able to tell Horsforth where building will take place. Everyone needs to have their say. If you need extra copies these are available from the Library, the Museum, the Council office under the Library or on line. Watch this space! The Community and Environment Committee are again working with the “In Bloom” committee to encourage all of us to become involved in the Town’s chances in the “In Bloom” challenge. This could be either through working in their own garden, joining the many volunteers who are out and about, or through financially supporting the Town Council’s efforts to carry on making Horsforth this pleasant and popular place to live. The colourful Spring baskets will soon

be with us again, as will the many daffodils along the roadsides of Horsforth. This committee is also about to make the annual Good Citizen Awards and for the first time, that of the Young Achiever of the Year. The actual awards will be presented at the Annual Meeting in May. The other Council Committees continue their work. Public Safety continues liaising with the Police and the PCSOs, and other organisations, to develop projects which, among other things, will look at Cold Calling zones and, in the long term, enhance the safety and well being of everyone, especially our more vulnerable residents. Next month the Council hopes to introduce its newest member. This follows the death of one of the founder members of the Council. Sylvia Whitlock represented the Broadfields ward since the beginning of the Town Council in 1999. She served on all the Council’s committees and made positive contributions to the development of many projects. Sylvia was also a member of many other organisations including Leeds North West Almo. She will be missed. Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council

5 Tips to Get on Your Bike Inspired by Victoria Pendleton, Wiggo, David Stone and the Brownlees, have you used the bike as much as you planned over the Winter? As Spring has sprung, here’s a few tips to get you back in the saddle.
1
Give Your Bike a 30 Second Check
Check your tyres are properly inflated and that any quick release mechanisms are holding the wheels in place. A properly inflated tyre can take some considerable effort out of cycling and reduce the risk of punctures. Check the brakes are squeezing the tyres enough and that the brake pads are hitting the rim of the wheel, not the tyre, enabling for a gentler more controlled stop. Hopefully the saddle and handle bars are set at the right height but if not there can easily be adjusted with a small spanner. Is your helmet secure? Don’t wear it too high as you want to ensure that your forehead is protected whilst if you tip your head forward do you feel any movement?
Last check, as you set off is to make sure that the chain is going through the cogs and derailleurs without catching and that you’re able to go through the gears without slippage.
2
Ease Yourself Back
Although they say no-one ever forgets how to ride a bike, if it’s been a while your muscles may have forgotten the effort required at times so don’t set off on a 10 mile route straight away. Plan a short ride out or even ease yourself back in on an exercise bikes or anyone can book in for a Spin bike session at Horsforth’s Trinity Fitness before hitting the road.
3
Plan Your Route
The best routes for cycling are not always obvious. Leeds City Council have produced some excellent cycling maps for the city including North and North West Leeds. These make cycling easier, safer and more pleasant. Get a copy free of charge from the Gateway Information Centre at Leeds City station.

Ride as if You Are Invisible
Even in florescent clothing it can be difficult for drivers to see you. Ride as if you are invisible anticipating cars misjudging your speed or signalling without notice. In particular never edge up on the inside of a vehicle at a junction as the driver is unlikely to be aware you are there. Ride about 1 metre from the kerb and be prepared for obstructions in the road.

Labour on Town Street
Determined duo Jamie Hanley and Rachel Reeves take to Horsforth to help struggling citizens.
The Horsforth branch of the Labour party recently invested time in reaching out to the public, seeking their view on the tax credit cuts that are soon to be implemented by the Government. More than 4,000 individuals in the local community suffer from the cuts. It is now the Labour party's aim to give struggling families a voice and to prevent similar reductions in the future. “Hardworking families on low and middle incomes in places like Guiseley, Horsforth and Rawdon are being affected.” Rachel Reeves, MP of Leeds West has stated, “So it’s important we speak with and listen to voters throughout the year.” Taking to the streets of Horsforth, they aimed to educate the public about the cuts and how it will affect them. The public opposition will urge the Government to reconsider tax credit cuts. “I was there” Rachel Reeves said, “to talk
to people and say that Labour is the only party standing up for people of all ages and from all walks of life.” Labour is determined to rectify the Government’s shortcomings. "Local people are angry about the Government's reforms.” Jamie Hanley, Labour PCC for Pudsey has told Covered, “We are listening to local people, and will continue to ensure that their voice is heard in the run up to the next General Election.”

Could HS2 help reduce youth unemployment
Under the ConDem Government, vocational education is being sidelined and the curriculum narrowed. It will under Labour. At the same time, Nearly 1 million British youngsters, and many employers are saying in our local communities, cannot find work. too many young Tens of thousands have been seeking jobs for people leave education more than a year. This is bad for our Country, without the right skills. and our local community. If we want a Country where everyone plays their part, We need a new generation of skilled workers and then we must do the right thing by the forgotten 50 per cent of youngsters who decide that academic focussed new apprenticeships. higher / further education is not right for them. Labour’s plan is to say that every big firm that gets a Government contract must commit to training Aspiration and ambition should be the right thing for all our young people — not just those who go young people for high-skilled jobs. to university. We will not be able to rebuild our HS2 presents a major opportunity – the project economy unless we learn to value the part everyone is worth £33 billion and experts say for every £1 has to play. million spent on this type of project, there should be at least one apprenticeship created. So HS2 should Jamie Hanley create at least 33,000 apprenticeships, many in our Jamie is chair of Pudsey Constituency Labour part of the Country. CO-OPERATIVE ENERGY SWITCHING SCHEME Regular readers of this column will be aware that I am very interested in all things energy related reducing fuel poverty and ensuring residents get access to initiatives to reduce expenditure on fuel. A new scheme has just been set up which I have set out below. The Co-Operative Energy Switching scheme is where residents band together to get the best possible domestic energy prices by signing up to form a local co-operative. The Council has joined with Community Energy Direct (CED), who are based in Leeds, to encourage the development of local Energy Smart Clubs. CED then work with their energy partner, Which?, to get the best price for those who have signed up. Many people never change energy companies and there are a high number of people categorised as fuel poor (spending more than 10% of disposable income on fuel). The more people see how these schemes work the more will be encouraged to join. The scheme was launched on Monday 18th February and residents can register their interest without any commitment. In April, the scheme will close for new applicants. CED Established 1983

will then work with Which? to source the best offers on price which will involve an auction with energy supply companies and then a comparison to find the best tariffs. The prospective prices will be shared with those who have registered. If the new offer is no better than their existing energy deal then they will not switch. If it is better then the individual has the choice whether to switch or not. There is no cost to the Council or its residents. Anyone who lives in one of the six local authority areas taking part can join the scheme. To register you can either telephone 0845 4502581 or online at www.communityenergy.info The average potential saving is expected to be between £115 and £150 per customer. Those who have switched energy provider recently may have no benefit in switching but those who have never switched are likely to save the most. Cllr. Oli’s Match 2013 On Easter Sunday, Yarnbury RFC host their 3rd annual match in celebration of the life of Oli Simcoe-Shelton – a former Yarnbury Colt who tragically succumbed to cancer aged just 20. Fun and fundraising are the theme of the day and the club hopes to add to the £4,500 they have raised in previous years for the Teenage Cancer Trust. On the day there will be a BBQ, auction with donations from local businesses, cake stall, tombola, face painting, bouncy castle and the now infamous, waxing challenge – great fun for spectators, great pain for participants. The bar will be open throughout the event. Everyone is welcome to attend and support the event and anyone embracing the Easter spirit by wearing bunny ears on the day will be rewarded with a

GOOD LUCK MATTHEW! Newlaithes’ talented pupil Matthew Sellers is in a league of his own when it comes to Irish Dancing. Having fought tough competition in the Great Britain Championships and British National Championships, Matthew has won his way through to the Finals of the World Championships in Boston, USA. He first started dancing at four years old, following a family tradition spanning three generations and is now looking forward to the Boston trip. By training as often as he can, Matthew is making sure he is physically prepared. His ambition is to return home with a Medal from the World Championships. In addition to his dancing, Matthew enjoys athletics and football, and is a valued member of the School's Athletics and Football Team. Good luck Matthew, we’ll let Covered readers know how you get on. David Stone MBE (photographed with the team) who presented certificates and medals to all competitors.
HORSFORTH NEWLAITHES SCHOOL PIPPED TO THE POST The Final of the 2013 Leeds Primary School Indoor Athletics was held at Leeds Trinity University in February. Over 100 entrants were whittled down to; Chapel Allerton, Garforth Green Lane, Horsforth Newlaithes and Morley Westerton for the finals. With a place in the West Yorkshire Finals adding to the pressure competition was tough. One and a half hours of running, jumping, and throwing later only five points separated the schools, with Chapel Allerton holding a narrow lead over Newlaithes.
Around 200 spectators were kept enthralled as first one school and then another appeared to be heading for victory. Eventually Chapel Allerton were the worthy champions with 83 points, Newlaithes and Green Lane, joint second, each with 74 points and Morley Westerton with 73 points. Rules dictate that in the event of a draw the team with the most wins would qualify. Green Lane with six wins just pipped Newlaithes’ five. Although disappointed with the narrow defeat, Newlaithes Teacher, Mr Pieniazek, told Covered “We’re very proud of our athletes for putting in such a tremendous effort”.

Remember the Deaf Granny Most children love a lie in on a Saturday with a bit of TV but as a parent you probably worry that they should be getting out the house more - getting kids interested in anything apart from DVDs and video games can be difficult. Well, Covered has discovered that there are children who are not only happy to give up their Saturday morning at home and mix with kids of all ages, they do it voluntarily. So, we dragged student writer John Gledhill out of bed and away from his cereal on a cold Saturday morning, to find out just exactly what kind of magic Leeds Children’s Theatre (LCT) is performing and who is this deaf granny?! ‘The deaf granny is a way of getting them to remember to project’, smiles senior LCT member Judith Unwin as we sit to the side watching a group of kids performing. ‘I’m the deaf granny and I’m sat at the back of the theatre – if they don’t project I can’t hear what they’re saying on stage so how will an audience?’ ‘Deaf granny!’ she calls out to one child who mumbles her lines; both Covered and the younger member have a twinkle our eyes – LCT is an amusing place. Ask Judith what her official title is and she’ll tell you: ‘we don’t have titles’. Indeed, younger member, Sarah, 14, from Bramley, tells us she likes LCT ‘because staff are not like teachers and I feel more confident here, I get to learn something new and be creative’.
Based in the Carriageworks Theatre in Millennium Square, LCT has been going since 1935. Famous names to have passed through include John Craven, Angela Griffin and the legendary Peter O’Toole! However, while some children do go on to study drama, member Janine Walker, 32, says ‘it’s not the aim to become famous, but to enjoy it [theatre]. The Children are not always confident when they first come but eventually begin to experience a different side to themselves in a very safe space’. The workshop is a series of exercises which are hugely entertaining thanks to their improvisational nature. LCT member Ian Goodison – a school drama teacher - notes proudly ‘we are the only theatre where children don’t have prompts – they must get themselves out of it if they forget their lines’. Covered witnessed kids jumping in to help out their fellow members whose minds had gone blank. Such a display of togetherness and communal support seems to be the ethos of LCT where members range from seven to seventy! Covered is going to remember the deaf granny and tell you this loudly: LCT receives no funding. All members and staff volunteer their services and are not paid. They put on two plays a year, which they promote themselves to raise money to keep going. To support them all you have to do is to buy a ticket to their show and enjoy yourself. The next one is Jacqueline Wilson’s The Lottie Project from Tues 16 – Sun 21 April.

Aireborough Rotary Club Opening Their Doors in April The Rotary Club of Aireborough prides itself on an inventive range of activities to raise funds for worthwhile causes at home and overseas. In October we covered their big brass band concert at Yeadon Town Hall, where over £3000 was raised for armed forces charities. On 1 March it was their annual Sheepstakes at club headquarters, Horsforth Golf Club. On the evening, around 110 guests enjoyed a six race card of sheep racing along the length of the dance floor – the handicap being the inexperience of the randomly drawn jockeys (pilots) who had to guide their charges home by winding string onto a baton. The beneficiaries were Martin House Hospice and Otley based Chameleon – funding crèche and educational facilities in South Africa. That evening was to be followed by a ladies’ night on 22 March.

the usual wind-up at Aireborough Rotary’s annual sheepstakes. The sheep have to be wound along the length of the dance floor – with as many eyes on the antics of the jockeys as on the progress of their mounts.
On 30 April, also at Horsforth Golf Club, Rotary is holding a new members’ evening – an event both for recent recruits and anyone wanting to find out what it’s all about before thinking of joining. All enquires to Tony Scaife on 0113 2588007.

Ibsen's Ghosts set to startle Adel audiences Hypocrisy is unmasked and home truths revealed in Henrik Ibsen's masterpiece Ghosts, the forthcoming production from Adel Players. The play will be performed at the Adel War Memorial Hall, LS16 8DE, from Wednesday 24 to Saturday 27 April (7.30pm). Ibsen's poignant tale attacking moral convention stunned society in the late 19th century. Modern audiences will discover that Ghosts' power to shock remains undiminished in its startling relevance today. This play portrays human despair whilst also providing moments of pure hilarity. Adel Players are an amateur dramatics group who have been entertaining north Leeds audiences for over 60 years. Their January play - Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce - sold out its four-night run, while their October 2012 production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons was described as "superb" by amateur theatre magazine Sardines.
Café Backs Becci’s Artwork Covered loves people who don’t give up so we were excited to meet young Meanwood artist Becci Maryanne who wanted to exhibit her work, but was told it would never sell because it was too unusual. So just how did she get Arts Café to agree to hang her work and why did total strangers pledge £460 to help her? She said I should change it to a little girl holding a balloon, it would be easier to sell’, laughs Becci, 21, as she recalls a shop owner’s response to one of her pieces (see photo). It’s easy to sit back – I’m not a confident person, but I don’t want to let people manipulate what I do’, she continues. ‘A girl holding a balloon… you can’t question that. Art should inspire you to use your head a bit.’ Becci’s art inspires you to use your head a lot. She does illustrations of animals that seem to highlight the negative impact of humans on the natural world – one striking piece is of a grizzly bear walking on two legs carrying Morrison’s shopping bags! Not to be discouraged, she took her unique portfolio to Arts Café where they agreed to let her hang her work. However, she didn’t have enough money for the amount of supplies she would require! Undeterred, Becci
Tickets for Ghosts cost £7 and bookings can be made on (0113) 275 5585. or via the website at www.adel-players.org.uk. discovered a website, Kickstarter: ‘you put your idea on – mine was having my own exhibition that would only be possible if I reached £300,’ she explains. People then pledge money if they like the idea - paying only if the financial target is reached - for which they receive one of her prints. ‘I made £460 in ten days; one guy pledged £80 - people are amazing!’ she says. Covered recommends you visit facebook.com/ beccimaryanneart or http://www.beccimaryanne.co.uk to find out more. Arts Café, on Call Lane, Leeds, will be showing all things Becci until May. Brassneck’s Whistle Down The Wind Yeadon based BrassNeck Theatre always offer exciting and innovative productions and 2012 was no exception. Following on from sell-out performances of ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Calendar Girls’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof ’ at Yeadon Town Hall, members and the production team allowed themselves a short Christmas rest before beginning rehearsals for the fabulous Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical ‘Whistle down the Wind’. The story centres round a deeply religious community where Swallow, a fifteen year old girl struggling with her beliefs and the death of her mother discovers a mystery man hiding in the barn. As he utters the words ‘Jesus Christ’, Swallow is convinced that he is indeed Jesus and is an answer to her prayers. She and the other town children
endeavour to keep his identity a secret from the adults. A very talented cast includes an outstanding junior company and their performance of ‘Long overdue for a miracle’ and ‘ When children rule the world’ will delight audiences. As you experience the classic ‘No matter what’ made famous by Boyzone and the title song ‘Whistle down the wind’ plus many other memorable songs, you will be captivated by this superb piece of musical theatre. …..but it doesn’t end there! BrassNeck Theatre is very excited to have been given the rights, by invitation, to perform the multi-award winning musical ‘Avenue Q ‘ from 12 - 16 November, so put the date in your diary. Back In Black Descending down the stairs into the murky underbelly of Leeds’ Empire bar, Covered student writer John Gledhill is ready for anything as he opens the double doors. Even so, he is still surprised to find himself immediately face to face with the headliner herself, Cookridge’s own Georgia Jacubiak… She looks like a gothic goddess – dressed all in black, with flawless marble skin and jet-black hair – and for a moment I am speechless. Thankfully, when I can talk again I mention Covered and she greets me warmly. ‘Thanks for your interest and support, Covered - it means a lot’ she says, referring to our review in Edition 23. Georgia is the front-woman of The State of Georgia who are celebrating the release of their new album Synesthesia. As I take in the Cavernlike atmosphere of the tiny stage I reflect that - while this is no hormone drenched cellar in Liverpool - I have the privileged feeling of being a tiny part of something exciting. You see, The State of Georgia is the most thrilling local group I have heard in ages and I just shook hands with the person who has written the most gorgeous melodies since the fab four first flowerpowered their way into our hearts and minds. As Georgia takes to the stage there is a wonderful atmosphere of anticipation.

Thankfully, the group delivers with an Synesthesia by State of Georgia can now be engaging and spell-binding performance. JORDAN UPHOLSTERY
“I’ve been manufacturing suites for the best part of 30 years. Although we’ve traditionally supplied to trade, recently we’ve made the decision to open our doors to the general public. With us, you’re buying direct from the manufacturer, so you can have your choice of style, size and fabric without paying astronomical prices. Anyone calling in would deal with me personally and I’ll oversee it right through to delivery. You’ll never get lost in the system with us, we are small enough to give the personal touch but large enough to deliver All of our furniture is hand made in our on-site factory so we control the quality from start to finish and are able to offer you the highest standards of craftsmanship and of course, exceptional value for mone money.”
