SID’S ON THE SLITHER AND WE WANT HIM BACK!

Liz burton Ivor Hughes John Gledhill Dawn Kilner Eric Wells Hello and welcome to Edition 26 of Covered – the magazine that delivers. What a month for the weathermen! Over the last thirty days we’ve had freezing temperatures, snow, sleet, hail, rain, glorious sun and gales – have I missed anything? I’m sure you’ll all join me in hoping more clement weather from now on. Certainly our hard working distributors will. It usually takes around 7 working days for the team to deliver 45,000 magazines, with most staff hitting about 600 letterboxes per day. Whilst the ice and snow was at its peak, this was reduced to around 130 magazines per day and there were 2 days when deliveries were not possible at all! Apologies to those that received their copy of Covered slightly later than usual, we’ll put in an order for snowshoes, ice picks and ropes next year! Or maybe, the local authorities could pay some attention to paths and pavements once the roads are clear. The provision of more grit bins would help I’m sure but it seems that very few streets meet the criteria to receive one. Let me know if you’re in an area where you feel a grit bin is desperately needed, we’ll push your local representatives to take a second look. Special thanks to readers old and new who have taken the time to tell us about your thoughts on Covered, we’re truly grateful for all your positive feedback about our publications and we’ll continue to bring you the area’s best mix of hyperlocal news, views and features. The deadline for booking advertising and for editorial submissions for next month’s edition is 10/05/13, I look forward to hearing from you.

The Local Pantry is a shop and café situated in Leathley on the main A658 road to Harrogate. On the site of the former Hunters’ Garage, it may still look like a petrol station from the outside, but inside has been lovingly refurbished to incorporate a café, kitchen and generous sized shop. The large windows provide beautiful views over towards Otley Chevin and there’s even a secure children’s play area to the rear of the premises.

The Local Pantry Opened in 2011, The Local Pantry is owned and run by a local family who have experience from restaurant and supermarket backgrounds and who are very committed to the ethos behind their business. They aim to provide good quality, affordable Yorkshire food and produce 7 days a week, at times to suit the community and passing trade, even up until 7pm most days. A little like all of the stalls at your local farmers’ market being rolled into one, and open at regular and convenient times. It’s a brilliant outlet for smaller businesses and great for locals and passing tourists to mingle over coffee and a scone. The Local Pantry are keen to champion their suppliers further by displaying photographs of them around the store, which is a lovely and personal touch, and makes you feel a little bit closer to understanding where your food actually came from.

In the café, the menu uses only products available from within the premises. This means that the Daily Specials Board will always take pride of place and feature imaginative recipes with seasonal produce, creating minimal waste. Brunch is also very popular, especially on Sundays, with variations on the menu until 3pm. The in-house chefs are also kept busy making many of the items available on the deli counter, ranging from ready meal solutions and cakes to the enormous Scotch eggs, which are available in a variety of flavours. The deli counter also offers a wide range of meats, cheeses and olives from Wetherby, and the delicious beetroot brownies are one of the many items suitable for coeliacs, with more gluten free products and dishes planned for the future, including cupcakes, pastries and bread. The shop caters for almost every need with products ranging

from spices and chocolate to cleaning products, all sourced locally where possible. An odd few products are not grown in Yorkshire and are labelled ‘Not From Yorkshire’, and support is given to Fair Trade farmers elsewhere. A new alcohol license means they’ll soon be stocking wines and beers too, which will be a welcome addition for customers wanting to pick up a complete dine-in meal on the way home. The lasting feeling from a visit to the Local Pantry is one of commitment and community. There’s a genuine focus on the good, old-fashioned values of putting the customer, and their needs, first. Regular customers are greeted by name and the Notice Board is overflowing with local events and children’s artwork. The team here also go to extraordinary lengths, not only to source, but to understand the products and their enthusiasm shows when they are offering friendly guidance or cooking instructions to the more uncertain among us. Judging by the amount of people visiting, it seems that their principles are certainly working and plans to renovate the exterior will surely only bring more happy customers through their doors. www.thelocalpantry.co.uk twitter @thelocalpantry

400g Risotto rice

300ml Apple Juice

1 Red Onion

3tsp Baking Powder

1 Onion

½ cup of sugar

2 Carrots

170g Butter

2 Garlic Cloves

100g Butter

Parsley Bunch

125g + 50g mature cheddar grated

Pinch thyme

150g Goat Parmesan

Lemon Rapeseed Oil

4 heaped tsp red onion marmalade

200ml White wine

Rapeseed Oil

Roasted Beetroot Risotto with Beetroot Crisps & Goat Parmesan Shavings Place1kg of beetroot in tin foil. Drizzle in oil and thyme and wrap up. Roast in oven for 1hour at 180c before removing. Top and tail and peel the beetroot, then roughly chop before putting into a pan and adding the apple juice and sugar, and cooking to reduce by half. Add to a food processor and blitz to a smooth puree. Next, finely chop onion and garlic and sweat off in a little oil. Add risotto rice and coat in oil for a couple of minutes. Add white wine and reduce until liquid has gone. Gradually add stock a ladle at a time, stirring continuously. Cook until rice has softened, add beetroot puree, butter, parmesan and seasoning. To make the crisps, slice the remainder of the beetroot on a mandolin or cut as thinly as possible. Fry until crispy. Drain on kitchen towel and add sea salt. Serve with beetroot crisps and shaved parmesan on top and drizzle with rapeseed oil.

Split Red Lentil, Red Onion, Carrot & Parsley Salad Cook lentils on a moderate heat adding water throughout and stirring continuously. Once cooked, remove from pan and allow to cool. Finely dice the red onion and grate the carrots and mix in with the cooled lentils. Roughly chop the parsley and add to the lentils along with seasoning and lemon oil. Mix thoroughly and serve.

300-400ml milk

Fountains Gold & Bracken Hill Red Onion Marmalade Scones Sift flour and baking powder together. Cut butter into cubes and rub through the flour until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs. Fold through 125g cheddar. Rub marmalade gently through mix until thoroughly dispersed. Add just enough milk to form a soft dough (you may not need all the milk depending on how wet the chutney is and the type of flour). Gently bring together the dough and pat out onto a floured surface to a thickness of approx. 1.5 - 2inches (or the height of the cutter). Brush with milk, sprinkle with the remaining cheddar and bake in a preheated oven 180/200 degrees celsius for 15 minutes or until risen, golden brown and firm on the bottom.

Yorkshire’s love affair with fish and chips Consider, if you will, your enduring memories of a Yorkshire summer. Licking ice cream in a deck chair on the East coast might be one of them. Watching the cricketers at Headingley could be another. But for many, it’s sitting in a leafy park eating Britain’s traditional takeaway – fish and chips. Yorkshire and fish and chips go together like rhubarb and custard. Harry Ramsden’s – that great Yorkshire institution – was once the largest chippie in the world. As times change, the Great Old Man of the frying industry has been franchised off and the original site in Guiseley has new owners. But nothing else has changed – not really. Yorkshire has always delivered the deliciously battered goods and will continue to do so. Britain’s love affair with the fabulous food has never wavered. Today, over 380 million portions of fish and chips a year are dished out to the hungry hordes. Although the lip-smacking taste may be the decisive factor of its success, the fact that fish and chips contain the least amount of saturated fat than any other popular takeaway is undoubtedly appealing. The UK’s chippies hover around the 10,000 mark – 8

times as many as the “Golden Arches” of McDonald’s! Those shops which hold the distinguished Quality Award – the national “5-star benchmark” awarded by the National Federation of Fish Friers – are a credit to the industry and uphold everything a great British accolade should: it denotes excellent customer service, safe hygiene practices and…the best fish and chips! This may come as no surprise, but Yorkshire has the highest concentration of Quality Award winners than anywhere else in the UK. Yorkshire simply batters the competition. So what does this mean? Well, it simply means that Yorkshire knows what she’s doing when it comes to fish and chips. So when you’re feeling peckish, pop into your local chippie. Whether you like them soused in vinegar from paper, or prefer a chunk of cod from a cardboard box, we’re all in the same boat, and we’re all very happy. Fish and chips are here to stay, and there’s no better place to get them than from your local chippy. The best of the bunch can be found in this month’s Covered. Try them and tuck in! Cagefighting at Farsley AFC Ivor Hughes got his first taste of MMA at Farsley AFC in April. Here is what he found out on the night “Cagefighting” was given a bad name by TV features focusing on the most extreme examples. That “anything goes” approach has its roots in Brazilian ju-jitsu and is a very, very long way from the rapidly growing and internationally adopted sport now known as MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). So, what is MMA? MMA is a mixture of all unarmed combat sports. The ones most in evidence on the night were boxing, judo and wrestling. Opponents usually start by boxing, sometimes adding kicks. Then judo, to throw their opponent to the floor – with them on top. Then judo/wrestling in order to gain a submission. Depending on the class of contestants, some blows are also permitted while on the ground. On the night Twelve fights, at amateur (3x 3 min rounds), semi-pro and pro (3x 5 mins) level. Impressive, fascinating and quite surprising. The level of protection - gloves and shin pads – varies according to the class of contest. With a maximum three judged rounds, though few

The evening started at 5.20 with an amateur bout between juniors aged 14 and15 – 14 being the lower age limit widely accepted as the norm. An official line has to be drawn somewhere, with media and web reports of contestants as young as 8 being disturbing.

Local Matters 15

fights lasting that long, punches are traded fast and furious from the off. Some contestants test their opponents early on with powerful kicks. Bouts of wrestling are inevitable and frequent. Limited blows on the floor were rarely telling. The idea seemed to be to win by gaining submission with a painful limb or choke lock. Then it’s all over in a flash. Brutal, yes - but there certainly weren’t the same twelve rounds of heavy punishment to the brain endured by boxers. There was also total discipline from the contestants – and mutual respect. And the composition and behaviour of the audience. Yes, some ardent fans got vocal during exchanges – but no more than at football matches. Clearly the majority had an interest in the contests but were a far cry from the bare-knuckle badger-baiting brigade some might expect. The next MMA evening at Farsley AFC is expected to be in October. Tickets for the April event were £20, £30 ringside and £40 VIP.

A lot of the action is on the floor.

Windows XP, Office 2003 Time's Up? Many of us have computers running Windows XP + Office 2003: old friends, at work and at home. Over the years, Microsoft has been providing security updates to help ward off hackers and virus writers whose objective is to steal your data: passwords; logins; bank details all have a monetary value to them. The world of computers is fast moving and Microsoft will stop supporting XP (and Office 2003) from 9.4.14. Your computer will keep running afterwards, but will become more vulnerable to attack. XP will remain a prime target because there are so many users. It's the economics of crime. What should you do? (a) Move over to Windows 7 or Windows 8, but older PCs may not run either at a satisfactory speed, so then you're talking about a new, or more recent 2nd hand, machine. (b) keep XP, accept the increased risks, teach yourself the

basics of computer security and learn to properly use anti-virus /malware products. (c) Use LINUX, a free operating system with free programs. Not sure if you have Windows XP? Press the keys ('Windows Logo' /'Flag' key) + (Pause Key) together and a window will pop up with the information. If you’re not sure what the best course of action is then ask the professionals. Stonewalling Tactics The Dry Stone Walling Association, a charity, was founded in 1968 to preserve walls and the craft itself. It now has branches covering areas as far apart as the Isle of Skye and Cornwall only London and the south east aren’t. Hardly surprisingly, in the north, there are eight branches between Barnsley and Burnley. And, although the West Yorkshire branch is in Huddersfield, it’s the Otley and Yorkshire Dales branch that has taken responsibility for repairing and restoring dry stone walls in north Leeds and beyond. Right now, the group is focusing its efforts on restoring the walls around the car park at Otley Chevin Forest Park on York Gate, opposite The Royalty Inn (long closed). Other recent efforts have also included restoring walls in Calverley Woods and Rawdon and building a memorial at Harrogate Showground.

There Is Community Spirit around Horsforth Rail Bridge! In February we reported the queues caused by a breakdown on Horsforth rail bridge and how help hadn’t been forthcoming until the rescue team arrived alongside the police – the police having been called by a passing pedestrians only after the car had been stuck there for twenty minutes. Was the community losing its spirit? Not so, according to a reader in Cookridge who telephoned us; “I had a nasty fall at the end of January on the very same bridge. A gust of wind literally blew me off my feet. I was concussed. A gentleman immediately called an ambulance and a lady motorist stopped, put her coat over me to keep me warm and insisted on staying with me until the ambulance arrived – even though she was on her way to work. They could not have been kinder. I’m sorry that I never got to thank the lady motorist.” Were you the motorist? If you get in touch with Covered we’ll pass on your details – the injured lady asked us not to give her name.

The golden coloured car, centre, stuck on Horsforth rail bridge in February. Fortunately help was forthcoming much more quickly for the reader who had a nasty fall on that very bridge a fortnight earlier.

Finance Matters Editor Chris Barnham investigates financial issues that might affect the residents of this area. When I was growing up my parents had a small ceramic plate. This plate had writing on it which said that it was a ‘Round Tuit’, and explained that everything would now be ok, because once you got a Round Tuit you can accomplish anything.

A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

It seems little has changed since those days. We are still overburdened with things that have been put on hold until we have the time and the inclination to deal with them. One of the biggest areas in this regard is organising our fi nances and planning for our futures. The problem is that every day we delay is another day closer to the crunch time when the plans that we have or haven’t made will come to fruition. Everybody has responsibilities not just to those around them but to their future selves. What will happen when you retire? How will you pay for the expected (university fees for children) and the unexpected (emergencies)? Might you need care in later life? Who will get your savings when you die? The chances are that you haven’t reviewed your situation from a fi nancial perspective for far too long. You know what’s coming but you just haven’t given it the priority it deserves because other apparently more important issues have taken up your time. Your future is too important for that. You need to get a Round Tuit.

BEER & PIeS AT BRIDGE FESTIVAL It’s been a long winter, but The Bridge Inn is getting ready for the good weather that must surely arrive. Soon the award winning hanging baskets and flower displays that signal Spring will be in place making The Bridge Inn one of the area’s most colourful landmarks. Recently, The Bridge has been quietly building up its cask ale offering and has now received recognition from Cask Marque - giving drinkers an assurance that they keep their pints perfect. Locally brewed casks, such as Midnight Bell and Yorkshire Sparkle, have been particularly popular. In partnership with local and national brewers The Bridge is now proud to announce its first annual Beer & Pie festival to be held on 25th-27th May. Making full use of their large beer garden the Bridge will be offering 20 Cask Ales. Roger the chef is already cooking a

wide range of his famous pies and there’ll be a special menu celebrating the Bridge’s food speciality throughout the weekend. The festival will also have events including, the big Frock v Kessler fight on the Saturday, quiz and raffle on Sunday and then the big finale on Monday; The hilarious Beer House Boys will be live Monday afternoon and just to round things off there’ll be a Hog Roast. For the kids there’ll be a bouncy castle throughout the weekend. Support a great community pub and call in! The Bridge Inn Low Lane Horsforth TEL: 0113 2587339 20 C ask Ales Hog & Roa st

Oli’s Match Rescheduled Initially planned for the Easter weekend, Yarnbury’s annual match in celebration of the life of former Colt, Oli Simcoe-Shelton, fell victim to the horrific weather.

COOKRIDGE GARDEN OPENS FOR CHARITY Each year, over 3700 National Garden Scheme (NGS) registered gardens welcome around 750,000 guests and raise in excess of £2.5 million for charities. This is the fifth year that keen Cookridge gardeners, Carol and Michael Abbott, will open their own garden to visitors. Proceeds are donated to NGS charities and to Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Admission is just £2.50 and free for children. Plants will be available for sale along with refreshments and tombola. Regretfully, due to slopes, steps and narrow paths wheelchairs cannot access the garden. The garden is at 4A Blackwood Rise, Cookridge, LS16 7BG and is open: Monday 27th May (12.30 - 5.30) Sunday 14th July (12.30 - 5.30 To find other participating gardens and their dates visit ngs.org.uk

Thankfully, the snow and ice is now a distant memory and the match has been rearranged for Sunday May 12th. For more info contact Lynda Gomersall on: 07752 853441 or email: Lynda.gomersall@ntlworld.com ADVERTISER TESTIMONIAL

PART NIGHT SWITCHING - STREET LIGHTING Leeds City Council propose to switch off some street lights between midnight and 6am on a mixture of main and residential roads. Around ÂŁ4million a year is spent on electricity for street lighting and by changing some street lights to part-night operation savings around ÂŁ1.3million could be made over the next ten years. Not all lights will be affected. Of the 92,000 street lights in Leeds, it is appropriate to part-night switch around 1 in 8 street lights on main roads and 1 in 14 street lights on residential roads. Depending on the outcome of this consultation, the fi rst lights could start to be converted to partnight operation around September/October 2013. Each road requires an individual assessment; it could take up to three years before the whole of Leeds has been assessed. Main roads in non-residential areas will be

considered first. If there are residents on the road, they will be consulted and any concerns will be considered. Street lights will not be turned off at roundabouts; junctions; pedestrian crossings; traffic lights; speed bumps and chicanes. This will ensure that road safety is maintained. The safety and wellbeing of Leeds residents and motorists is important. The Council will work closely with the Emergency Services, Local Ward Councilors and Parish Councils on the detailed proposals. All accidents and crime in affected areas will be monitored and if records suggest that there is an unacceptable change in the incidence of crime or road traffic accidents and that the alteration to the street lighting is identified as the cause, then partnight switching will be terminated at that location. Residents can contact the Council in respect of this proposal by email to Highways@leeds.gov.uk or by calling 0113 222 4407. If you would like to send me your comments also, I would be only too pleased to receive them. Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com Twitter @barryanderson19

A big “Thank You” goes to everyone who completed and returned the Development questionnaire. Members of the Planning and Licensing Committee are collating all these replies, which will be put together in a document. This will be the basis of Horsforth’s response to future development proposals. Once the analysis is complete the results will be circulated.

GOLF FITNESS

TIPS

The top golf professionals recognise keeping fit can have almost as big an impact on their game as practicing on their swing.

1

Medicine Ball

Hold a medicine ball in front of your whilst in your regular golf stance. Swing the medicine ball as if taking a half back swing and then forwards as it striking forwards. Repeat the swinging motion for 20-30 reps to help strengthen your core.

2

Cardio Training

The average golfer walks between 5 to 6 miles during a round of golf, whilst it’s all too easy to tire on the last few holes. Cardio is a great way to get oxygen to the muscles and prepare the body for a full workout. Take a bike ride or go for a run for 2½ to 3 miles, the equivalent of 9 holes of golf.

Image courtesy Woodhall Hills Golf Club

I take my physical fitness and well-being very seriously. I believe that being in good physical shape helps me to be a better player. I can drive the ball further, my energy and concentration levels are improved and I feel like I have an extra edge when the pressure is on. A healthy body equals a healthy mind.

Here are a few tips to get you started, whilst any good gym can provide programmes to help develop your game;

The Fairway at Woodhall Hills Golf Club

- Rory McIlroy comments on his website, www.rorymcilroy.com

3

Weight Training

Tiger Woods describes defi nes his weight training routine aim as “to build the strength I need to crush a golf ball rather than develop big muscle volume”. Go for a medium weight with a combination of free weights, bench presses and resistance machines and sets of between 25-50 reps on each. The best swing requires symmetry so work on both left and right sides equally.

Core Flexibility

Good core muscle control will impact on how you strike the ball. Stretching is a vital part of the workout. Use of an exercise ball can help, whilst Pilates classes are excellent in controlling movement and reducing back pain.

5

Keep it Regular and Mix It Up

To have any real impact you need to train at least

3 times a week, whilst a good fitness instructor can help to advise on changes to your routine just as well as a caddy will select the right club.

Time for grass to have its first cut and scarify of the year.

The season is still cold, so be prepared for a slow start to working in the garden. Everything now depends on the temperature of the soil, so as the soil warms up: The grass will have been growing in your lawn, so now is the time to give it an initial trim with the blades relatively high. Then give it a good scarify with a long tine garden rake, to remove the thatch and moss which will have built up over the winter. Next we improve the drainage, using a garden fork pushed into the turf every 6 to 9 inches to a depth of 4 inches. The last item is to spread a spring lawn fertiliser over the whole area, incorporating weed and moss killer if this is a problem. Then as the season progresses, cut on a regular basis and trim the edges to maintain a perfect finish. Often overlooked, this is a good time to re-pot indoor

Boundaries Fencing & Garden Service

house plants and permanent tubs outside. If the pots are too large, scrape away the top few inches and replace – incorporating a slow release fertilizer. Indoor and out door perennials may also be split, to fill in empty area or pot, keeping the freshest pieces and disposing of any old woody material. Little and often is the motto for vegetable sowings, in order to enjoy fresh produce on a regular basis – without a huge glut. Every two weeks, make sowing of beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, peas, turnips. Onion sets, potatoes and leeks may be planted in bulk at the correct time, as these will take a long time to mature. Hardy annuals may be sown outside, although if you have sown these under cover, together with sweet peas, it is time to start hardening them off for planting outside when the worse of the frosts have passed. The Horsforth Allotment Shed on Featherbank Lane, Horsforth is open every Friday night from 7pm – 8pm and Saturday from 10:30 – 12pm during March, April & May. Time to go green with the Green Deal? This ground-breaking scheme is launched as part of the Government’s target to improve the efficiency of homes by reducing our energy consumption - and driving down our energy bills. Latest figures from the English Housing Survey have revealed: • 19% of the private rented sector was in fuel poverty (i.e. spending at least 10% of income on fuel) • 14% of housing stock was built pre-1919 • 19% of stock fell into the worst-performing category for energy efficiency Under the initiative, households can apply for loans from the Green Deal Finance Company - a nonprofit making organisation - to spend on energysaving measures, ranging from new boilers to roof and cavity insulation. Loans are repaid through your energy bills over an agreed period. As repayments are offset by the savings achieved, there should be no increase in your fuel bill. Borrowing rates are expected to be around 6.5%

As an incentive, the Government is introducing a cashback scheme. The amount you get is linked to the scale of work carried out. The loan would remain with the meter, and repayments taken on by the incoming owner/tenant who would continue to benefit from the improvements Benefits to Landlord and Tenants As increasing numbers of people become more energy conscious, it is expected that a property with low running costs will boost its marketability - and help it achieve its maximum rental potential. Energy-efficient improvements help to maintain the fabric of the property, reducing the risk of serious maintenance issues including damp, condensation, freezing pipework and unreliable boilers. Faux furs flying off the rack

EYE

ON VINTAGE

The chill of winter has begun to subside, but the popularity of faux fur coats sure hasn’t! Don’t shy away from picking up a fur coat in fear of offending someone - second hand fur means recycling and could help decrease the amount sold today. Grab a gorgeous coat that’ll continue to last and make you feel a million dollars. Although the sun is starting to show, if 2013’s December winter is as bitter as March gone, you’ll be glad you nabbed one when you did! There are hundreds of vintage clothes and accessories waiting to be rediscovered! Keep your eyes open next time you’re at a local vintage fair. Get some penciled in now! Upcoming Vintage Fairs - get them pencilled in! 27-28th April, Festival of Vintage, York, YO23 1EX --- visit www.discovervintage.co.uk for more info! 17th, 18th, 19th May, Haworth 1940s Weekend, The Old School Rooms, Haworth --- visit www.haworthvintagefairs.co.uk for more info!

Featuring Flavorful Fashion This month, Covered’s spotlight shines on the fashion pieces which are standing out in 2013. If you love to add something unique to your wardrobe or jewellery box, then these may be just the thing for you! Demand for fabulous 50’s fashion If you want an especially unique dress, then look to 50’s designs. Hourglass-figure enhancing, pleated dresses are prime examples, designed with polka dots or floral patterns. Not always fitting today’s taller generation, many manufacturers are replicating them to meet the increasing demand; if you get your hands on an original and it fits you just right, hold onto it! Not only for the sake of value and preserving history, but recycling too! And let’s face it, Primark’s imitations hardly last 50 odd years like these have!

Big, bold, unusual brooches Crank your style up a notch with some seriously snazzy brooches. Keep your eyes open for Lea Stein, French brooch designer, whose items resemble art deco – a classic vintage style! Albeit a little pricey, these brooches are a must-have if you’re looking to sport something quintessentially unique. Customer Testimonial

“We used Creative Installations to knock through our kitchen and dining room into one room and install a new kitchen. David and his team designed us a bespoke kitchen that showed he had listened to what we had wanted. His team arrived on time, kept us informed, were very tidy and delivered a new kitchen we have loved ever since. David is honest and does what he says he will do at a good price and with excellent work ethics. Going, going... Covered magazine gives tips for those considering buying at auction to upgrade, restyle or simply save money Buyer beware Even with all of today’s consumer legislation, one place where the buyer must remain “beware” is the auction house. Most goods in general sales are sold as seen. For example, the majority of domestic appliances are sold with a warning to have them checked by a qualified technician. The exact terms of sale are usually posted on the wall or in the catalogue. The buyer usually has redress only if there was a clear error in the catalogue. Not worth what you paid for it, drawer sticking, wrong dimensions? You only have yourself to blame.

The inside and underside of many items often give clues about condition and authenticity. The oxidation, square nut and texture underneath this bronze are strong evidence that it is a C19th original.

Be prepared

Commission bids

Research is everything. Check for woodworm, rust, missing parts, cracks or other damage. The underside and inside of items can be great revealers. Remember – bodged repairs often cost more to put right than the original fault. If you are a complete novice then view with someone else, if only to compare notes. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Where did it come from? Is it in working order? What premium is added to the hammer price? Do I need to register before bidding? If you can’t deliver, then who can? Reputable and responsible auction houses don’t happen by accident – it is very much in their interest to build trust and confidence with their clients.

Those unable to attend on the day can leave a bid on the book. That does not necessarily commit you to that price. The auctioneer should still start the bidding at a reasonable figure - perhaps at the reserve or lower estimate. If you leave a bid of £160 then you might still be the winner at £120 (plus commission).

Where possible, refer to more than one antiques and collectibles price guide. But they generally refer to items in good order from a specialist dealer offering more guarantees than you will get at auction. An auction estimate of half the value suggested in a Miller’s guide is no guarantee that you have found a bargain. eBay results can be helpful.

Shelby’s Auctioneers

On the day, don’t assume that the other bidder is a dealer who knows what he is doing and can sell the item for a healthy profit. Not only do dealers make mistakes, the other bidder just might be making the same assumptions about you.

Condition reports and telephone bids Auctioneers usually offer images, condition reports and the option of telephone bidding free of charge. But none of these services is likely to be available on low value items.

Leeds Trinity University Round Up Gabby Logan’s Chancellor Installation Ceremony to celebrate Leeds’ heritage Following the announcement earlier this year that Gabby Logan is to become Leeds Trinity University’s first Chancellor, preparations are now underway for a ceremony that will officially install Gabby in her new role. Taking place on Thursday 6 June in Leeds Trinity University’s Chapel, the ceremony will signal Gabby’s official installation as the University’s Chancellor, whilst celebrating Gabby’s strong connections with Leeds and Yorkshire. To mark the occasion, Gabby will wear an historic gown that has been commissioned to celebrate Leeds’ long-standing textile and manufacturing heritage, as well as the University’s commitment to employability and nurturing emerging talent. Young Leeds-based graduate designer, Kate Duckworth, has been selected to design the gown. The gown is being made with cloth from Hainsworth, who have manufactured fine textiles in Leeds since 1783 and the final cut and finish will take place at Samuel Brothers, a military tailors in Leeds established in 1830. The first fitting of the gown with Gabby took place over Easter (pictured top left). Professor Margaret House, Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University commented: “Gabby’s installation ceremony is the perfect occasion to celebrate the strong heritage of Leeds that Gabby and the University are proud to be a part of. We are pleased to demonstrate this with the commission of her gown, and by providing the amazing opportunity for a talented young graduate like Kate.” Student Mark Robinson is a winner at Leeds Sports Awards!

Greg Mulholland At the time of writing this, the announcement has just been made that children's heart surgery 'should recommence' in Leeds but now, the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, has to launch a thorough investigation into the handling of the whole affair. On Thursday, just before the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, the day after the High Court ruled that the safe and sustainable review, which initially marked the Leeds unit for closure, was unlawful, NHS Medical Director Sir Bruce Keogh along with senior NHS staff arrived at Leeds General Infirmary and insisted that the unit close with immediate effect. Sir Bruce stated that the basis for his decision was figures on mortality rates that he had received from the Central Cardiac Audit Database (CCAD). However, the data had not been analysed and was not ready to be used to form the basis of any decisions. This whole affair has been an utter shambles and heart surgery in Leeds should never have been suspended in the first instance and the manner in which it was done is a disgrace.

I am pleased that the hard-working professionals at the heart unit are able to get back to work next week and that the families and children, who have been put through an extraordinary amount of additional stress, can now establish some certainty as to how and where treatment will be given. I think that a full investigation by the Secretary of State now has to take place and assurances have to be given that the continuing review will be undertaken in a fair and impartial way and serious questions over the conduct and judgment of Sir Bruce Keogh and Sir Roger Boyle need to be addressed.' Bramhope St Giles Defers to St David In excess of 100 parishioners and other guest celebrated a St David’s Day lunch at Bramhope St Giles Church, albeit a couple of days late, on Sunday 3 March. The lunch was followed by a comprehensive quiz based on Welsh history, geography and personalities – and a touch of the language itself. St Giles’ next fundraising and social event will be on the evening of Friday 10 May when the church hosts The Nightflyers Big Band – a local 17 piece swing band with a full repertoire of Glen Miller and similar

Stewart Andrew mp It has been a turbulent few weeks for Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Unit and it has certainly kept me busy over the course of the Easter Recess. There was much celebration in Leeds on 27th March following the announcement in the High Court that the consultation and decisionmaking process which underpinned Safe and Sustainable’s decision to close the Leeds Unit was flawed, and that the assessment of Quality – supposedly at the heart of the decision – was unfair and unlawful. The following day surgery at the Unit was suspended by Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director, as he had received information from whistleblowers that the Unit was not of the highest quality, that mortality rates were disturbingly high and staffing levels and experience were a problem. It later emerged that one of the whistleblowers was in fact Sir Roger Boyle, director of the group overseeing mortality data across the health service and adviser to the Safe and Sustainable Review. Furthermore, the data was incomplete and unverified, as stated by John Gibbs, the head of Central Cardiac Audit Database (CCAD) who was responsible for preparing the figures. In his words, the release of the statistics “rings of politics rather than proper process.” After days of emergency meetings and risk summits the Unit was found to be safe and the hospital’s own detailed analysis of figures for Leeds undertaken in the last few days demonstrates that its mortality is in

line with all other centres, confirming the previous information it had about our safe outcomes. Whilst it is great news that the Unit has opened once again, it has left many of my colleagues in Leeds and in Westminster wondering exactly why the decision was made to close it in the first place and we will be seeking answers when Parliament returns.

HCC’s Mark McEneaney, Andrew Robinson & Thomas Monks (Chairman) with new signings Leon Harber & Mark Gilliver

Horsforth Cricket Club: Season Preview Horsforth Cricket Club enter the 2013 season having experienced highs and lows during 2012. Last year saw the 1st XI finish eleventh in the bottom division of the Aire Wharfe Senior Cricket League and having to seek re-election to the league for the first time. The re-election process was successful with HCC and Skipton fighting off Cookridge outfit Old Modernians who were looking for a berth in the league. The fortunes of the 2nd XI, in stark contrast, were something to make the club proud. Under the leadership of Chris Baker, they returned to the 2nd XI B Division at the first time of asking having been relegated in 2011. The championship was sealed on the final day of the season after securing a nervy point at home against Addingham. There was also a fantastic cup run in 2012 culminating in defeat against eventual cup winners Guiseley. The standout addition for 2013 is the signing of Mark Gilliver from the Central Yorkshire League’s Northowram Fields. Mark joins HCC not only to strengthen the 1st XI but will also use his years of coaching experience to head up junior coaching at the club. Former Thackley captain Leon Harber has also signed for HCC. Leon skippered Thackley to the Aire Wharfe A Division championship in 2011

having presided over back to back promotions from C Division to the top flight. This year’s 1st XI will be captained by Kris Lilley. Kris has been at the club since the age of 10 and was the overwhelming popular choice to take over at the helm when Chris Binks stood down after a three year tenure.

GUISELEY LIONS CLUB CHARITY BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR THIRD YEAR Guiseley and District Lions Club are to hold their third Charity Beer Festival at Coopers Bar Guiseley on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th May 2013. The theme is ‘Up Against T’wall’. Twenty four different real ales from Scotland and the Borders will be available along with a choice of wine and cider. Local businesses are sponsoring each of the beers and all proceeds will go to local worthy causes. Last year’s event raised around £3000 and Medical Alert Dogs, which trains dogs to recognise and respond to different medical conditions, were the main beneficiaries. The Lions also supported Eve Williams from Menston who suffers from quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Funds raised this year are to go to Callum Hall a 20-year old struck down by a rare paralysing infection. Callum, who has worked at The Station Pub in Guiseley for one and a half years, was fit and healthy until late September last year when he

Entry is by ticket only at £5 a person which includes a souvenir glass, 2 half pints and a programme detailing the beers sponsors. Additional beers will be priced at £2.50 a pint. Sessions are from 7-11pm each evening and 1-4pm on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased from Coopers or www.wegot tickets.com. For more information visit www.guiseley.co.uk/lions.

Poetry is fun? Poetry is not fun is it? It’s all soppy metaphors about love - like empty vases and lonely clouds - according to Covered’s John Gledhill. So, when students of Leeds Trinity University and members of the public got together with published poet James Nash for an open mic poetry night at Horsforth’s Sandbar, we couldn’t resist sending our reluctant writer along to talk to James, who had a surprise in store...

CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence

‘I write about death, sex and embarrassment. The first two cause the third for many of us, and from embarrassment comes humour’ says James. Indeed, sex did rear its head in several of the poems read out, contributing to a very funny night. Yes, ‘anything goes’ seemed to be the mantra; one student gamely tried out his stand-up comedy routine, several more read out pieces they had improvised that day and there was even a cello recital! It seems poetry can be anything you want it to be and the sheer variety on display made it abundantly clear that anyone can do it – ‘don't listen to the 'my writing is so crap' voice in your head’ advises James Nash. James began writing poetry in his teens after reading Phillip Larkin and Ted Hughes at school. He was forced to stop when he began teaching; ‘there was not a lot left over at the end of a school day for writing poetry’ he explains. However, James’ passion would not be denied and he began writing again aged 41. Participants on the night were equally inspired, despite a few nerves – they needn’t have worried though; the collective support was fantastic. Perhaps not surprising, as James notes ‘it's so important for artists and audiences to come together to share stories still, so through them we can come to understand the commonality of much of our experience. It's also just really good fun. ‘ While you don’t have to perform, in spite of his best efforts, your humble writer got dragged up and let’s just say…after a shaky start, the audience was putty in his hand – shame about those technical difficulties that, thankfully, didn’t affect anyone else…Still, what a night; best of all: no soppy metaphors! There you go John, not a cloud in sight; Covered is happy to be opening minds! Open mic night is bi-monthly at Sandbar, Horsforth. If you are interested in expressing yourself, Leeds Trinity University has announced a new Creative Writing MA course beginning September 2013, open to applicants of all ages.

BrassNeck Theatre Goes Whistling Down the Wind It’s been a long time coming – it was as long ago as March last year when Yeadon’s BrassNeck Theatre proudly announced that they had secured performance rights for the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman take on Whistle Down the Wind. The eponymous 1961 film remains an important part of British cinema history. In it, a Lancastrian teenager Kathy (Hayley Mills) and friends convince themselves that a fugitive from the law (Alan Bates) is indeed Jesus Christ. Rather than mimic the original book and film, Lloyd Webber and Steinman have relocated the story to 1950s evangelical Louisiana, where “Kathy” has become “Swallow”. Fans of the film might take some comfort that the kitten has retained the name Spider. Lloyd Webber we know. Steinman has had an illustrious musical career since the late sixties. The roll call of musical greats with whom he has worked include Barry Manilow, Barbara Streisand, Cher, Celine Dion and Meat Loaf (Steinman wrote all the songs on the album Dead Ringer).

We built this city on rock and roll Love ‘em or hate ‘em: Gang of Four, Chumbawumba and Kaiser Chiefs are just some of the bands that hail from Leeds. What of the new generation though? It must be tough to afford equipment - let alone get gigs - in a triple-dip recession, amid benefit cuts and austerity measures. Luckily, times of unrest and uncertainty have always produced great music – Pistols, Clash, Jam, Specials- but who is gonna give new groups a platform? Well, don’t worry ‘cause Covered is on it and we sent John Gledhill to speak to entrepreneur James Reains about how he just might have the answer… James recently founded Leeds Mayhem, a site dedicated to promoting bands – and has now teamed Support local bands every third Sunday at The up with Bluefruit promotions to create a ‘showcase’ Crown, Stanningley from 12-5pm - anyone aged 14 where any band aged fourteen and upwards can play! to 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Any bands wishing to apply visit www.leedsmayhem.co.uk ‘Two 14+ venues in Leeds closed last month [so] it is hard to give younger bands an opportunity to play their music. Most promoters work with bands [who are] eighteen and over,’ James tells us. This makes the fact that any band aged 14+ can play at the Leeds Mayhem showcase very unique. All the more so because, according to James then if all goes to plan, this could be the big break most bands dream of: ‘Leeds Mayhem will also be looking at maybe doing a small label in the new year, so this is a way of finding young talent and hopefully we can push bands to the next level’ he says.’ Chemical child, The Gonzos and No Hope without liars - just a few of the groups you might be hearing of soon - have all taken advantage of the fact that a full vocal PA system, amps and monitors are provided; simply bring your instruments, plug-in and play! What really gets us at Covered waving our lighters in the air is that this is all non-profit; James explains ‘I wanted to help get young kids off the streets and give them something to do. I hope this will help the community by giving kids somewhere to go. Any profit we make is put into the next gig’. Covered has a ‘more than a feelin’ that Leeds Mayhem is one to watch!
