Splitting Up is hard to do ‘Splitting up’ is not pleasant. A sympathetic ear as well as good legal advice is needed. We’d like to explain some of the key stages surrounding divorce and some of the terminology you may have come across before. If you want a divorce the first thing you have to do is file a Petition in court, and also in certain circumstances another document called a Statement of Arrangements for Children. If you’re on the receiving end of divorce proceedings then you will receive from court some papers and a form to fill in and return to the court. It would be wise to take legal advice before completing the form as your answers may determine what happens next. Many people talk about a quickie divorce, known as the ‘special procedure’ in legal jargon. Far from being special it’s actually by far the most common procedure. If somebody qualifies for a divorce, and files a petition and the other party are agreeable to the divorce, returning the paperwork to court in proper order, then the parties qualify for a quickie divorce. The spouse who is doing the divorcing has to fill in another court form and have this sworn so it is evidence under oath confirming the grounds for divorce. The court will consider the paperwork, and if all is well, announce a date for granting the couple a quickie divorce. Decree nisi of divorce is in essence a decree of a court saying you are entitled to a divorce. A decree nisi (nisi – latin for interim) does not terminate a marriage, although it does have the legal effect of crossing out the names of spouses from each other’s wills. The rest of their wills remain intact however many people would want to make more extensive changes so it is important to revisit your will at this point. Decree absolute is the final decree of divorce, which terminates the marriage. It can be applied for by the person who was doing the divorcing 6 weeks after the decree nisi, and then they get it by right. If they do not do it then the other party is entitled to apply for it another 3 months after that. It also has to be done within 12 months or else a special explanation will be required. A decree absolute finally terminates the marriage forever. It is the point of no return. Whatever your situation a good solicitor will have your best interests at heart and will help you through the process as smoothly as possible, hopefully making the situation that little bit easier for you. www.lawoffice.co.uk

Hello and welcome to Edition 26 of Covered – the magazine that delivers.

What a month for the weathermen! Over the last thirty days we’ve had freezing temperatures, snow, sleet, hail, rain, glorious sun and gales – have I missed anything? I’m sure you’ll all join me in hoping more clement weather from now on. Certainly our hard working distributors will. It usually takes around 7 working days for the team to deliver 45,000 magazines, with most staff hitting about 600 letterboxes per day. Whilst the ice and snow was at its peak, this was reduced to around 130 magazines per day and there were 2 days when deliveries were not possible at all! Apologies to those that received their copy of Covered slightly later than usual, we’ll put in an order for snowshoes, ice picks and ropes next year! Or maybe, the local authorities could pay some attention to paths and pavements once the roads are clear. The provision of more grit bins would help I’m sure but it seems that very few streets meet the criteria to receive one. Let me know if you’re in an area where you feel a grit bin is desperately needed, we’ll push your local representatives to take a second look.

Vous parlez français? Vous aimez la France? Le Club Francophone du Wharfedale est pour vous! The Club Francophone du Wharfedale is now in its 19th season, with many founder members still on the books. It promotes an appreciation of French culture and the use of the French language. Not that all the Club’s thirty-odd members are fluent French speakers, far from it. All events are conducted in French, but the atmosphere is relaxed and the objective is communication. The Club is affiliated to the Alliance Française, the cultural wing of the French Embassy. There is a travelling resource library of books, magazines and DVDs for members’ use. There are few similar groups in Yorkshire and many members travel some distance to meetings – even in winter. That must be a recommendation… Speakers regularly comment on their warm reception and the enthusiastic response of their audience.

The Local Pantry is a shop and café situated in Leathley on the main A658 road to Harrogate. On the site of the former Hunters’ Garage, it may still look like a petrol station from the outside, but inside has been lovingly refurbished to incorporate a café, kitchen and generous sized shop. The large windows provide beautiful views over towards Otley Chevin and there’s even a secure children’s play area to the rear of the premises.
The Local Pantry Opened in 2011, The Local Pantry is owned and run by a local family who have experience from restaurant and supermarket backgrounds and who are very committed to the ethos behind their business. They aim to provide good quality, affordable Yorkshire food and produce 7 days a week, at times to suit the community and passing trade, even up until 7pm most days. A little like all of the stalls at your local farmers’ market being rolled into one, and open at regular and convenient times. It’s a brilliant outlet for smaller businesses and great for locals and passing tourists to mingle over coffee and a scone. The Local Pantry are keen to champion their suppliers further by displaying photographs of them around the store, which is a lovely and personal touch, and makes you feel a little bit closer to understanding where your food actually came from.
In the café, the menu uses only products available from within the premises. This means that the Daily Specials Board will always take pride of place and feature imaginative recipes with seasonal produce, creating minimal waste. Brunch is also very popular, especially on Sundays, with variations on the menu until 3pm. The in-house chefs are also kept busy making many of the items available on the deli counter, ranging from ready meal solutions and cakes to the enormous Scotch eggs, which are available in a variety of flavours. The deli counter also offers a wide range of meats, cheeses and olives from Wetherby, and the delicious beetroot brownies are one of the many items suitable for coeliacs, with more gluten free products and dishes planned for the future, including cupcakes, pastries and bread. The shop caters for almost every need with products ranging

from spices and chocolate to cleaning products, all sourced locally where possible. An odd few products are not grown in Yorkshire and are labelled ‘Not From Yorkshire’, and support is given to Fair Trade farmers elsewhere. A new alcohol license means they’ll soon be stocking wines and beers too, which will be a welcome addition for customers wanting to pick up a complete dine-in meal on the way home. The lasting feeling from a visit to the Local Pantry is one of commitment and community. There’s a genuine focus on the good, old-fashioned values of putting the customer, and their needs, first. Regular customers are greeted by name and the Notice Board is overflowing with local events and children’s artwork. The team here also go to extraordinary lengths, not only to source, but to understand the products and their enthusiasm shows when they are offering friendly guidance or cooking instructions to the more uncertain among us. Judging by the amount of people visiting, it seems that their principles are certainly working and plans to renovate the exterior will surely only bring more happy customers through their doors. www.thelocalpantry.co.uk twitter @thelocalpantry

1.3kg Beetroot
750ml of Vegetable Stock
300g Split Red Lentils
680g Self-Raising Flour
400g Risotto rice
300ml Apple Juice
1 Red Onion
3tsp Baking Powder
1 Onion
½ cup of sugar
2 Carrots
170g Butter
2 Garlic Cloves
100g Butter
Parsley Bunch
125g + 50g mature cheddar grated
Pinch thyme
150g Goat Parmesan
Lemon Rapeseed Oil
4 heaped tsp red onion marmalade
200ml White wine
Rapeseed Oil
Roasted Beetroot Risotto with Beetroot Crisps & Goat Parmesan Shavings Place1kg of beetroot in tin foil. Drizzle in oil and thyme and wrap up. Roast in oven for 1hour at 180c before removing. Top and tail and peel the beetroot, then roughly chop before putting into a pan and adding the apple juice and sugar, and cooking to reduce by half. Add to a food processor and blitz to a smooth puree. Next, finely chop onion and garlic and sweat off in a little oil. Add risotto rice and coat in oil for a couple of minutes. Add white wine and reduce until liquid has gone. Gradually add stock a ladle at a time, stirring continuously. Cook until rice has softened, add beetroot puree, butter, parmesan and seasoning. To make the crisps, slice the remainder of the beetroot on a mandolin or cut as thinly as possible. Fry until crispy. Drain on kitchen towel and add sea salt. Serve with beetroot crisps and shaved parmesan on top and drizzle with rapeseed oil.
Split Red Lentil, Red Onion, Carrot & Parsley Salad Cook lentils on a moderate heat adding water throughout and stirring continuously. Once cooked, remove from pan and allow to cool. Finely dice the red onion and grate the carrots and mix in with the cooled lentils. Roughly chop the parsley and add to the lentils along with seasoning and lemon oil. Mix thoroughly and serve.

300-400ml milk
Fountains Gold & Bracken Hill Red Onion Marmalade Scones Sift flour and baking powder together. Cut butter into cubes and rub through the flour until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs. Fold through 125g cheddar. Rub marmalade gently through mix until thoroughly dispersed. Add just enough milk to form a soft dough (you may not need all the milk depending on how wet the chutney is and the type of flour). Gently bring together the dough and pat out onto a floured surface to a thickness of approx. 1.5 - 2inches (or the height of the cutter). Brush with milk, sprinkle with the remaining cheddar and bake in a preheated oven 180/200 degrees celsius for 15 minutes or until risen, golden brown and firm on the bottom.

Yorkshire’s love affair with fish and chips Consider, if you will, your enduring memories of a Yorkshire summer. Licking ice cream in a deck chair on the East coast might be one of them. Watching the cricketers at Headingley could be another. But for many, it’s sitting in a leafy park eating Britain’s traditional takeaway – fish and chips. Yorkshire and fish and chips go together like rhubarb and custard. Harry Ramsden’s – that great Yorkshire institution – was once the largest chippie in the world. As times change, the Great Old Man of the frying industry has been franchised off and the original site in Guiseley has new owners. But nothing else has changed – not really. Yorkshire has always delivered the deliciously battered goods and will continue to do so. Britain’s love affair with the fabulous food has never wavered. Today, over 380 million portions of fish and chips a year are dished out to the hungry hordes. Although the lip-smacking taste may be the decisive factor of its success, the fact that fish and chips contain the least amount of saturated fat than any other popular takeaway is undoubtedly appealing. The UK’s chippies hover around the 10,000 mark – 8

times as many as the “Golden Arches” of McDonald’s! Those shops which hold the distinguished Quality Award – the national “5-star benchmark” awarded by the National Federation of Fish Friers – are a credit to the industry and uphold everything a great British accolade should: it denotes excellent customer service, safe hygiene practices and…the best fish and chips! This may come as no surprise, but Yorkshire has the highest concentration of Quality Award winners than anywhere else in the UK. Yorkshire simply batters the competition. So what does this mean? Well, it simply means that Yorkshire knows what she’s doing when it comes to fish and chips. So when you’re feeling peckish, pop into your local chippie. Whether you like them soused in vinegar from paper, or prefer a chunk of cod from a cardboard box, we’re all in the same boat, and we’re all very happy. Fish and chips are here to stay, and there’s no better place to get them than from your local chippy. The best of the bunch can be found in this month’s Covered. Try them and tuck in! Cagefighting at Farsley AFC Ivor Hughes got his first taste of MMA at Farsley AFC in April. Here is what he found out on the night “Cagefighting” was given a bad name by TV features focusing on the most extreme examples. That “anything goes” approach has its roots in Brazilian ju-jitsu and is a very, very long way from the rapidly growing and internationally adopted sport now known as MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). So, what is MMA? MMA is a mixture of all unarmed combat sports. The ones most in evidence on the night were boxing, judo and wrestling. Opponents usually start by boxing, sometimes adding kicks. Then judo, to throw their opponent to the floor – with them on top. Then judo/wrestling in order to gain a submission. Depending on the class of contestants, some blows are also permitted while on the ground. On the night Twelve fights, at amateur (3x 3 min rounds), semi-pro and pro (3x 5 mins) level. Impressive, fascinating and quite surprising. The level of protection gloves and shin pads – varies according to the class of contest. With a maximum three judged rounds,
The evening started at 5.20 with an amateur bout between juniors aged 14 and15 – 14 being the lower age limit widely accepted as the norm. An official line has to be drawn somewhere, with media and web reports of contestants as young as 8 being disturbing.

fights lasting that long, punches are traded fast and furious from the off. Some contestants test their opponents early on with powerful kicks. Bouts of wrestling are inevitable and frequent. Limited blows on the floor were rarely telling. The idea seemed to be to win by gaining submission with a painful limb or choke lock. Then it’s all over in a flash. Brutal, yes - but there certainly weren’t the same twelve rounds of heavy punishment to the brain endured by boxers.
CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
There was also total discipline from the contestants – and mutual respect. And the composition and behaviour of the audience. Yes, some ardent fans got vocal during exchanges – but no more than at football matches. Clearly the majority had an interest in the contests but were a far cry from the bare-knuckle badger-baiting brigade some might expect. The next MMA evening at Farsley AFC is expected to be in October. Tickets for the April event were £20, £30 ringside and £40 VIP.

Windows XP, Office 2003 Time's Up? Many of us have computers running Windows XP + Office 2003: old friends, at work and at home. Over the years, Microsoft has been providing security updates to help ward off hackers and virus writers whose objective is to steal your data: passwords; logins; bank details all have a monetary value to them. The world of computers is fast moving and Microsoft will stop supporting XP (and Office 2003) from 9.4.14. Your computer will keep running afterwards, but will become more vulnerable to attack. XP will remain a prime target because there are so many users. It's the economics of crime.

Craiglands’ new general manager looks to the future
A feature of the dining experience will be “eat what you want, where you want”, says Mark. So, if you want a burger in the restaurant or a gourmet dish in the bar, that’s fine. Mark fully intends to grasp the opportunities afforded by the advent of the Tour de France in 2014 and Craiglands’ Mark Toole is keen to forge further links with the community. Charities and other event organisaters will find a sympathetic ear.
Ilkley’s flagship hotel has had a hard time lately, along with plenty of others in the trade. Economic pressures and some rapid turnover of staff created a certain feeling of instability here as elsewhere. Mark Toole, in post as general manager since 11 February this year, has consistency and stability as his watchwords for the ethos he wants to create and foster. Mark trained at Fylde College, Blackpool, but has been involved in the hotel trade since he was a schoolboy, holidaying with his parents then staying on to work until the end of the summer. After 10 years managing Thorpe Park at Colton, East Leeds, he was persuaded to come to Ilkley. He quickly summed up the clientèle and added Yorkshire hospitality to those watchwords. Early beneficiaries, two days into Mark’s tenure, were Wharfedale Music Festival committee members. Arriving for a meeting, they were impressed to see writing materials supplied, as Margaret Smith told Covered. “And we were surprised and delighted when coffee was served just afterwards,” she said.

Stonewalling Tactics The Dry Stone Walling Association, a charity, was founded in 1968 to preserve walls and the craft itself. It now has branches covering areas as far apart as the Isle of Skye and Cornwall only London and the south east aren’t. Hardly surprisingly, in the north, there are eight branches between Barnsley and Burnley. And, although the West Yorkshire branch is in Huddersfield, it’s the Otley and Yorkshire Dales branch that has taken responsibility for repairing and restoring dry stone walls in north Leeds and beyond. Right now, the group is focusing its efforts on restoring the walls around the car park at Otley Chevin Forest Park on York Gate, opposite The Royalty Inn (long closed). GUISELEY LIONS CLUB CHARITY BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR THIRD YEAR Guiseley and District Lions Club are to hold their third Charity Beer Festival at Coopers Bar Guiseley on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th May 2013. The theme is ‘Up Against T’wall’. Twenty four different real ales from Scotland and the Borders will be available along with a choice of wine and cider. Local businesses are sponsoring each of the beers and all proceeds will go to local worthy causes. Last year’s event raised around £3000 and Medical Alert Dogs, which trains dogs to recognise and respond to different medical conditions, were the main beneficiaries. The Lions also supported Eve Williams from Menston who suffers from quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Funds raised this year are to go to Callum Hall a 20-year old struck down by a rare paralysing infection. Callum, who has worked at The Station Pub in Guiseley for one and a half years, was fit and healthy until late September last year when he

began to suffer back pain. Just two days later he was paralysed. To help his recovery Callum will need specialist equipment and top-of-the-range wheelchairs that are not available in hospitals. Among the things he needs are an Easy Stand, which helps him to stand and reconnects his brain to his legs, and a Functional Electrical Stimulation bike to help maintain his leg muscles. Entry is by ticket only at £5 a person which includes a souvenir glass, 2 half pints and a programme detailing the beers sponsors. Additional beers will be priced at £2.50 a pint. Sessions are from 7-11pm each evening and 1-4pm on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased from Coopers or www.wegot tickets.com. For more information visit www.guiseley.co.uk/lions.

Golf Fitness
Tips
The top golf professionals recognise keeping fit can have almost as big an impact on their game as practicing on their swing.
The Fairway at Woodhall Hills Golf Club Image courtesy Woodhall Hills Golf Club
1
Medicine Ball
Hold a medicine ball in front of your whilst in your regular golf stance. Swing the medicine ball as if taking a half back swing and then forwards as it striking forwards. Repeat the swinging motion for 20-30 reps to help strengthen your core.
2
Cardio Training
The average golfer walks between 5 to 6 miles during a round of golf, whilst it’s all too easy to tire on the last few holes. Cardio is a great way to get oxygen to the muscles and prepare the body for a full workout. Take a bike ride or go for a run for 2½ to 3 miles, the equivalent of 9 holes of golf.
“
I take my physical fitness and well-being very seriously. I believe that being in good physical shape helps me to be a better player. I can drive the ball further, my energy and concentration levels are improved and I feel like I have an extra edge when the pressure is on. A healthy body equals a healthy mind.
“
Here are a few tips to get you started, whilst any good gym can provide programmes to help develop your game;
- Rory McIlroy comments on his website, www.rorymcilroy.com
3
Weight Training
Tiger Woods describes defines his weight training routine aim as “to build the strength I need to crush a golf ball rather than develop big muscle volume”. Go for a medium weight with a combination of free weights, bench presses and resistance machines and sets of between 25-50 reps on each. The best swing requires symmetry so work on both left and right sides equally.
“Golf simply does not get better than playing this gem of a course situated in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales”
“‘We are proud of the quality of our course and the wonderful clubhouse facilities. Otley is rightfully recognised as the ‘friendly golf club’ and all visitors are assured of a warm welcome.’’ - Peter Clarke, Secretary Manager Otley Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 2006 and offers a course of the highest quality, situated in one of the most attractive locations in the county and, whatever the handicap of the player, presents a testing round of golf. Two streams meandering through the course influence shot selection on seven of the holes and the centrally positioned clubhouse is ideal for playing 9, 18 or 27 holes. Core Flexibility
Good core muscle control will impact on how you strike the ball. Stretching is a vital part of the workout. Use of an exercise ball can help, whilst Pilates classes are excellent in controlling movement and reducing back pain.
5
Keep it Regular and Mix It Up
To have any real impact you need to train at least
3 times a week, whilst a good fitness instructor can help to advise on changes to your routine just as well as a caddy will select the right club.

Time for grass to have its first cut and scarify of the year.
Little and often is the motto for vegetable sowings, in order to enjoy fresh produce on a regular basis – without a huge glut. Every two weeks, make sowing of beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, peas, turnips. Onion sets, potatoes and leeks may be planted in bulk at the correct time, as these will take a long time to mature. The season is still cold, so be prepared for a slow start to working in the garden. Everything now depends on the temperature of the soil, so as the soil warms up: The grass will have been growing in your lawn, so now is the time to give it an initial trim with the blades relatively high. Then give it a good scarify with a long tine garden rake, to remove the thatch and moss which will have built up over the winter. Next we improve the drainage, using a garden fork pushed into the turf every 6 to 9 inches to a depth of 4 inches. The last item is to spread a spring lawn fertiliser over the whole area, incorporating weed and moss killer if this is a problem. Then as the season progresses, cut on a regular basis and trim the edges to maintain a perfect finish. Often overlooked, this is a good time to re-pot indoor house plants and permanent tubs outside. If the pots are too large, scrape away the top few inches and replace – incorporating a slow release fertilizer. Indoor and out door perennials may also be split, to fill in empty area or pot, keeping the freshest pieces and disposing of any old woody material.
Hardy annuals may be sown outside, although if you have sown these under cover, together with sweet peas, it is time to start hardening them off for planting outside when the worse of the frosts have passed. Whatever turns your wheels, ICC has it Ilkley Cycling Club has just recruited its 1000th active member - a remarkable milestone for a club that was reborn a barely two years ago. Perhaps that's why the Club is gaining such a high profile, with three BBC TV appearances in December alone. The size of the membership allows it to have an incredibly broad scope of activities. The Club's motto is "From recreation to racing". So while there is a hardened corps of whippet-like racers and the ubiquitous MAMILS (middle-aged men in lycra) - a third of members are women and a third are under 18. The Club strives to increase confidence and skills from complete beginners upwards. Club rides cater for all abilities, speeds and levels of fitness. So if you're looking for a fitness boost, this could be for you. The Club runs rides on a Thursday evening and Sunday morning. There are women-only rides each Monday and a daytime ride on Tuesdays. There are regular traffic-
free training sessions for children, and a monthly family ride on the back road to Bolton Abbey. Word has clearly spread about the cycling scene in Yorkshire; Covered spotted one couple on the way back from the Tour de France launch in Leeds who had moved north especially! The Club has just invested in a set of "rollers" - you'll have seen Victoria Pendleton warming up on hers at the Olympics - so that members can race against each other indoors for fun, with progress shown on a big screen. They say it's better than an Xbox! Whatever turns your wheels, take a look at the website: ilkleycyclingclub.org.uk
2013 Ilkley Carnival set to make history The people of Ilkley have spoken - and they have looked to the past for an exciting future! This year’s Ilkley Carnival will have the theme of British History after 80 per cent of people selected it from a choice of five in an online public vote. It means the likes of Henry VIII, Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare and Queen Victoria could all be walking along the streets of Ilkley as part of the popular carnival, which this year takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6. Themes from previous years include children's literature, nursery rhymes, heroes and villains and our wonderful planet, while The Summer of Celebration was the theme for last year’s event. Now the theme has been chosen, carnival committee chairman, Andrew Stacey, is encouraging everybody who is planning to be part of this year’s event to get their thinking caps on to help make it the best in carnival history. “British History is a really good theme and will give people lots of ideas
Committee chairman Andrew Stacey with painting competition winners Emma, Alfie and Milly
and things to work with ahead of the carnival, which is fast approaching,” he told Covered. Ilkley public relations company Approach PR are handling publicity for the Carnival. Contact verity@approachpr.com

Ilkley Talking Newspaper Ilkley Talking Newspaper is one of hundreds up and down the country. It covers Addingham, Burley and Menston as well as Ilkley and is available to anyone with impaired sight or who, for whatever reason, has difficulty handling a newspaper. It all started over thirty years ago when a group of ladies got together to read the Ilkley Gazette to a blind friend. It occurred to them that others too might benefit, so they set about fund-raising for recording equipment, initially onto cassettes. As word spread, it was clear the Talking Newspaper answered a real need, with listener numbers peaking at 120 or so in the 1980s. What started as a cottage industry is now a far more sophisticated affair. There is a recording studio at Abbeyfield, in Riddings Road, Ilkley. Around 60 volunteers are involved; some edit the weekly Gazette, ready for the teams of readers arriving for Friday evening recording sessions under the expert guidance of a technician. Others edit the recording and pack the CDs for distribution by post. As well as weekly Gazette recordings, there is a
Greg Mulholland At the time of writing this, the announcement has just been made that children's heart surgery 'should recommence' in Leeds but now, the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, has to launch a thorough investigation into the handling of the whole affair. On Thursday, just before the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, the day after the High Court ruled that the safe and sustainable review, which initially marked the Leeds unit for closure, was unlawful, NHS Medical Director Sir Bruce Keogh along with senior NHS staff arrived at Leeds General Infirmary and insisted that the unit close with immediate effect. Sir Bruce stated that the basis for his decision was figures on mortality rates that he had received from the Central Cardiac Audit Database (CCAD). However, the data had not been analysed and was not ready to be used to form the basis of any decisions. This whole affair has been an utter shambles and heart surgery in Leeds should never have been suspended in the first instance and the manner in which it was done is a disgrace.

monthly issue of a selection of Dalesman features, also on CD. Both remain popular with listeners – though it is cheering to note that there are fewer these days, thanks to advances in medical science improving or rectifying loss of vision. Generous donations and even some legacies help to keep the enterprise going. Any reader who might be interested in joining the ITN team is invited to contact Lorraine Hockey on 01943 600869. Please also get in touch if you know anyone who might benefit from the service. I am pleased that the hard-working professionals at the heart unit are able to get back to work next week and that the families and children, who have been put through an extraordinary amount of additional stress, can now establish some certainty as to how and where treatment will be given. I think that a full investigation by the Secretary of State now has to take place and assurances have to be given that the continuing review will be undertaken in a fair and impartial way and serious questions over the conduct and judgment of Sir Bruce Keogh and Sir Roger Boyle need to be addressed.' Demand for fabulous 50’s fashion If you want an especially unique dress, then look to 50’s designs. Hourglass-figure enhancing, pleated dresses are prime examples, designed with polka dots or floral patterns. Not always fitting today’s taller generation, many manufacturers are replicating them to meet the increasing demand; if you get your hands on an original and it fits you just right, hold onto it! Not only for the sake of value and preserving history, but recycling too! And let’s face it, Primark’s imitations hardly last 50 odd years like these have! Big, bold, unusual brooches Crank your style up a notch with some seriously snazzy brooches. Keep your eyes open for Lea Stein, French brooch designer, whose items resemble art deco – a classic vintage style! Albeit a little pricey, these brooches are a must-have if you’re looking to sport something quintessentially unique. The fox is the most famous amongst her inimitable designs of animals, household items and characters, to name a few. Each took up to six months to handcraft!
The chill of winter has begun to subside, but the popularity of faux fur coats sure hasn’t! Don’t shy away from picking up a fur coat in fear of offending someone - second hand fur means recycling and could help decrease the amount sold today. Grab a gorgeous coat that’ll continue to last and make you feel a million dollars. Although the sun is starting to show, if 2013’s December winter is as bitter as March gone, you’ll be glad you nabbed one when you did! There are hundreds of vintage clothes and accessories waiting to be rediscovered! Keep your eyes open next time you’re at a local vintage fair. Get some penciled in now! Upcoming Vintage Fairs - get them pencilled in! 27-28th April, Festival of Vintage, York, YO23 1EX --- visit www.discovervintage.co.uk for more info! 17th, 18th, 19th May, Haworth 1940s Weekend, The Old School Rooms, Haworth --- visit www.haworthvintagefairs.co.uk for more info! BrassNeck Theatre Goes Whistling Down the Wind It’s been a long time coming – it was as long ago as March last year when Yeadon’s BrassNeck Theatre proudly announced that they had secured performance rights for the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman take on Whistle Down the Wind. The eponymous 1961 film remains an important part of British cinema history. In it, a Lancastrian teenager Kathy (Hayley Mills) and friends convince themselves that a fugitive from the law (Alan Bates) is indeed Jesus Christ. Rather than mimic the original book and film, Lloyd Webber and Steinman have relocated the story to 1950s evangelical Louisiana, where “Kathy” has become “Swallow”. Fans of the film might take some comfort that the kitten has retained the name Spider. Lloyd Webber we know. Steinman has had an illustrious musical career since the late sixties. The roll call of musical greats with whom he has worked include Barry Manilow, Barbara Streisand, Cher, Celine Dion and Meat Loaf (Steinman wrote all the songs on the album Dead Ringer).

Fourteen years of film in Otley With the recession hitting all of us, it's often worth looking close to home for those wonderful nights out. Otley Film Society is in its fourteenth year and offers a mix of popular, quality films - often of the type that had a very restricted cinema release - to a discerning and enthusiastic audience. The society is based at Otley Courthouse Arts Centre and screens at least 18 films between September and May every year. Amour, is the next screening on May 9th and focuses on Georges and Anne - a couple of retired music teachers enjoying life in their eighties. However, Anne suddenly has a stroke at breakfast and their lives are changed irrevocably. The film was screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme
d'Or. It went on to win the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards. Guest membership is available on the night for £4. The bar opens at 7pm and the films screen at 7.45pm - the audience is welcome to enjoy their drink during the film. For more information visit otleyfilmsociety.org.uk or otleycourthouse.org.uk/whats-on
Harmony is the key The unique community spirit of Otley is music to the ears – quite literally – as the ‘Otley Singers’ take to the stage. Their aim is to have us all marching to the same tune, by recognising the wonderful diversity that is unified within their district. So, let the melody shine as they invite you to ‘Unity in Harmony’ - a unique evening of acapella and accompanied singing of an eclectic mix of songs… ‘Otley Singers’ are a group of 40 women who are some of the region’s most gifted amateur singers. They sing an eclectic mix of songs ranging from gospel to folk to world music. The group is led by inspiring conductor and singer/songwriter Beccy Owen - who has collaborated, with the likes of Elvis Costello, Kate Rusby and Nitin Sawhney in her work as a singer/songwriter. All of the evening’s proceeds will go to the charity Singing for the Brain which is part of the Alzheimer’s Society. Its aims are to provide opportunities for people with dementia to sing together as a group. A number of the ‘Otley Singers’ members are associated with this worthy cause. Be prepared to be moved and entertained in this communal celebration! ‘Unity in Harmony’ will take place at 7.30 on Friday, May 3rd at The Otley Courthouse, Courthouse Street, Otley, LS21 3AN.
Price is £7 (£6 concessions) per person. Tickets available in advance from www. otleycourthouse.org.uk or telephone 01943 467466. For more information on ‘Otley Singers’ see the Otley Singers website at: www.otleysingers.org.uk. • Dry stone & mortared walls built or repaired • Landscaping and exterior maintenance, routine tasks to major projects • Fully insured, qualified & experienced
