Lies, fibs and whoppers 06 food & drink
The other day I got a letter from the TV Licencing people.
They were disappointed because I didn’t appear to have a TV licence. As I hadn’t answered their letters someone would be sent to see me. They went on to say that if I didn’t have a TV, please let them know and they would update their records. However they were still going to come and visit me to check! So they secretly think i’m watching a TV without a licence. So this official letter is in fact a fib, a lie, a whopper, call it whatever you will. The law used to take a very serious view of fibs, whoppers, etc. Nowadays organisations tend to fib a lot. Explanations of why they do things tend not to be the real reasons. “Your conversations are recorded for training purposes”, means “we are recording it for our benefit and will use it if needed for our benefit”. If you need it you can bet your life they won’t be able to find it. Health and Safety is also taken in vain these days if an organisation can’t be bothered continuing some service or another. At a hospital recently “health and safety” was claimed as a reason for having no waiting area magazines! Are we really thought of as that stupid? Can we not be communicated honestly with? Letters marked ‘Most Important Open Immediately’ turn out to be promotional bumf from an insurance company or the like. It’s plain old lying and that’s supposed to be illegal. However in law you can only be compensated for something you have lost. You might not like being lied to but you haven’t actually lost anything during the process so the law can’t assist. What we really need is more ethics and morality! By John Wilson • Look out for my column next month. • My colleagues and I regularly provide FREE speakers to local non-profit club and group meetings. Hello and welcome to this month’s edition of Covered. Things are hotting up for the summer which means we’ve plenty of outdoor activities to attend, support and report. We’re usually the only ‘community’ publication at these events and we try to support as many as possible, either by being there or by including details in our pages. Get in touch if you’re an organiser – we’ll do our best to drum up more support for you if we can. Please try to give us as much notice as you can – we’re a monthly publication, so no point in telling us the day before your event happens! If you’re looking for something to do over the next month or so take a look at the many and varied options on our Diary Dates pages.

We took a trip to The Woolpack in Esholt for this month’s Food & Drink feature; many of you will know it well as the pub of the same name in TV’s Emmerdale. Much has changed there since the cameras left, and it’s recently been refurbished – well worth a visit if you can. If Emmerdale is a staple of your TV week – take a look at P31 – we caught up with some of the cast members at Carnegie Stadium on 9th June, they were happy to pose for our photographer.

If you’ve given thought to extending your home, take a look at this month’s Property Matters section for some solid advice. I’m more at home tapping the keys on my laptop than I am banging in a nail (or whatever the technical term is!), so if you’re like me you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of very good trades-people advertising in this month’s edition. It’s always best to use local companies when you can!

The Woolpack at Esholt is perhaps best known as THE Woolpack, of Yorkshire Television’s ‘Emmerdale’ fame, since the popular TV soap opera used this village between Shipley and Guiseley to film it’s outside broadcasts from 1976 to 1996. The TV cameras may have long since moved out, to a purpose built village on the Harewood Estate, but the original Woolpack still stands and is thriving. Having undergone a major £50,000 refurbishment, the pub reopened it’s doors in March this year under new management, and we went along to check out the new look and menu.
The Woolpack New owners, Glenn and Caroline Royston, have a long history of managing pubs including within the Yorkshire Dales, and they explained that they were keen to rid The Woolpack of the former pine wood and green décor and return it to it’s former glory as a traditional, English country inn serving good, home cooked food and cask ales. The new interior is warm and welcoming with traditional stone floors, dark wood and tasteful red furnishings. Deceptively large inside, there is a large main seating area with
a smaller, separated dining area to the rear, which is ideal for small family parties. There are a good variety of trails in the stunning countryside around Esholt village and, with this in mind, there is also a room for ramblers and cyclists to enjoy a pint and a pie, whilst perusing the walls, which are adorned with ‘Emmerdale’ memorabilia, past and present. All of the staff are local and this seems to add to the friendly feel of The Woolpack, with plenty

of tourists and visitors asking for directions and recommendations. Village resident, Clair Thrippleton, is Head Chef and has vast experience, previously working at Cellar V in Guiseley for many years. She now works alongside Glenn in the kitchen to produce an extensive range of hearty, freshly prepared food, the most popular dish being the steak pie. There are also lighter meals and sandwiches available if you should wish to save space for dessert, and the Sunday roast is always popular, with a choice of meats locally sourced from the Aire/ Wharfe Valley. Special dietary requests can be catered for with advance notice and bookings are also recommended at busier times and for larger parties. Coach trips are still welcomed to Esholt with visitors coming from as far afield as Finland, but 48 hours notice is required for dining in The Woolpack in such instances, as the village can see up to 4 coaches per day at busier times. Theme nights are a new addition to The Woolpack too with the first evening being planned at the time of writing; a Spanish tapas evening with a live flamenco guitarist. This will be shortly followed by a special Father’s Day Sunday menu, which again had a generous and varied choice of dishes to suit most tastes.

So, whether you want to enjoy a ramble and take in the countryside air around Esholt or take the kids to meet friendly Farmer James and his animal family at nearby St Leonards’ Farm Park, or maybe you just want to photograph yourself drinking Amos Brearly’s favourite ‘Emmerdale’ beer, The Woolpack is a good place to stop and refresh yourself whilst enjoying the peaceful, country pace. When you’re sat outside, listening to the birdsong and the distant hum of the tractors it really is extraordinary to think that you’re only such a short distance from a main road, with Shipley and Guiseley only 10 minutes away at either side. The Woolpack is open from 11am – 11pm, 7 days a week and further details can be found on the website www. thewoolpackesholt.co.uk, or on their facebook page.

Yorkshire Puddings Whisk together equal quantities of eggs, plain flour and milk, approximately three quarters of a pint of each, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Melt the beef dripping in medium sized pudding tins in oven at 200 degrees Celsius, until the fat is smoking. Pour the mixed batter quickly into tins, approximately half an inch in each, and place in oven. Cook for 5 minutes before turning down oven to 150 degrees Celsius and cooking for a further 15 minutes, until risen and golden brown. Serve with rich gravy made from meat juices and caramelized onions.

Dessert
4 eggs Half pint cream 2oz sugar 100 mls Cointreau Seville oranges Buttered white bread Sultanas and mixed peel Marmalade Crème Fraiche to serve Fresh mint to serve
Steak and Ale Pie with Onions and Mushrooms
Seville Orange and Cointreau Bread and Butter Pudding
Seal one kilogram of stewing steak in a large saucepan with enough butter, seasoning and flour to make a roux. Add chopped onions and mushrooms and then 1 pint of ale and enough stock to cover the meat. Simmer for 2 hours until the meat is tender. Place in a pie dish before topping with shortcrust pastry, made with 8 oz of the plain flour, butter, seasoning and enough water added to make a dough. Roll out pastry on a floured surface, top the pie dish, glaze with a beaten egg and bake for 20 minutes, until golden brown. Served with chunky chips, seasonal vegetables and rich onion gravy.
Grease a pie dish or ramekin with butter. Line with buttered bread and sprinkle with sultanas and dry mixed peel, before adding orange segments. Next soak with Crème Anglaise and repeat the layering process until the dish is full. To make the Crème Anglaise whisk together the eggs, cream, sugar and Cointreau. The final layer should be Crème Anglaise. Cook in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes before glazing with hot marmalade and serving with Crème Fraiche topped with citrus fruit garnish and fresh mint.

Ingredients: Buy Local “The chef takes pride in using only locally sourced ingredients”. Possibly the most clichéd phrase in restaurant ‘reviews’. Restaurants often pay for reviews in magazines so they’re not always a reliable appraisal - the writer is of course obliged to speak highly of their client’s culinary capabilities. Although reviews may be disingenuous, it’s clear that ‘locally sourced ingredients’ have huge benefits for us – environmentally, economically and, most importantly in their appearance and taste. If you do get chance, bypass the supermarket for once
and give your local independent producers a try you’ll be surprised at the range of products on offer at markets and Farm Shops. It makes sense to everyone that a leg of Lamb born, raised and slaughtered locally will taste better than one that has traveled (in shrink-wrap) from New Zealand. Travel is great for people, but not produce. We’re blessed with some great options for picking up local food ingredients so there’s no need to travel 30 miles into the countryside for genuine, organic local produce. Try going along to your local Farmers Market or Farm Shop – here’s a few destinations to get you started.

thinking of extending your home? Here are some simple steps which could save you time & money. Firstly find a Local Architectural Consultant or Architect, who you think you can work with, someone willing to listen to your ideas and work to your budget, but at the same time come up with an interesting design and also be aware of any planning issues in your area. Dependent on how complicated your building project is you can have your drawings done by a Local Architectural Consultant which will keep your costs to a minimum as Architects can often be very expensive. Review the design options with your Architectural Consultant and don’t be afraid to talk about what you want. Try to find the best use of space as extending can often add value to the future sale price, whether or not this is an extension, loft conversion or garage conversion.
Before the extension (turn to page 18 to see the completed building work)
Ideally you should make a list of all the changes/ ideas that you want to incorporate and discuss it with your Architectural Consultant. Do you need planning permission? Speak to your Architectural Consultant regarding obtaining all necessary Planning Permissions and Building Regulation Approvals for the work you intend to carry out.

The current permitted development rules now make the whole process of extending your property a lot easier. You’ll be surprised how much extra space you can get without going down the full planning route. In terms of costs your overall budget should include Architectural Consultant’s, Local Authority & Engineer’s fees, as well as adding on VAT which often gets forgotten about. Likewise it is recommended that you include an amount as a contingency sum. Try not to deviate from the final plan/quote as once you have agreed the quote changes invariably become extra costs so you should try and avoid them. Use local tradespeople as they will want to keep their reputation in the area and often are more reliable. Ideally try to get at least 2 or 3 quotes and always check examples of their work.
The complete effect: after the extension
When you have chosen your contractor, make sure that you have a written contract before you commence work. This would typically include details of scheduling & costs.

Service Stands The Test of Time
BBC. A year later, a third shop opened on Duckworth Lane as demand for electrical items increased.
High Streets have changed over the years. They’ve had to evolve, perhaps more so in the last 5 years than ever – we now see a considerable number of national brands hogging the streets, as well as charity shops, bookmakers and chain coffee shops.
During the 1950’s the company took on an apprentice radio and television engineer, Roger Smith, who developed his skills and the service the business could offer. This eventually saw the creation of a separate entity called Woolletts Service. Rogers’ retirement in October 2007 saw the closure of the Duckworth Lane shop.
There are still some fantastic independent retailers out there though and they’ve stood the test of time for good reason. Woolletts, who have shops in Otley and Bradford remain popular – proving that pedigree is just as important as price. Here’s how it all began… The end of World War II saw a young Stanley Woollett leave the RAF as a gifted radio engineer and open a small shop just off Gt. Horton Road, Bradford. He started selling accumulator-powered radios (anyone remember those?!) as the majority of homes didn’t have electricity. Stanley was instrumental in giving the people of Bradford their first taste of BBC radio. 1947 saw a second shop open on Toller Lane where, in addition to selling radios, he began supplying televisions – the type that could still only broadcast
The man at the helm now is Andrew Woollett, who has not only kept Woollett Service running smoothly, but has also managed to expand the business. Instrumental in the progress of this long-standing retailer has been the appointment of David Kelk, an ex-Director of Peter Dyer Ltd with a huge passion for gadgets and a background as a TV and radio engineer. The years have been kind to Woolletts, the company is still a feature of the high street and hasn’t compromised any of its principles. So make a special trip to Woollets today and be part of its rich history, giving as good a service today as it did back it 1945 Wooletts Home Electrical 31 Kitrkgate, Otley LS21 3HN TEL: 01943 851297

Get involved Women and Girls’ Football July is officially Women’s Football Month with the UEFA Euro Finals in Sweden and the 20th anniversary of women’s football at The FA. Football is now the most popular team sport for women and girls in the UK, with interest increasing in the game following the GB’s team strong performance at last year’s Olympics and England installed as 4th favourites for July’s European Championships starting in Sweden on 10th July. BBC3 will be showing England’s opening game against Spain at 7.30pm on Friday 12th July, whilst there are opportunities to get involved in the game at grassroots levels in the North and West of Leeds. On Wednesday 3rd July 2013 Leeds Trinity University will host a prestigious FA Girls’ Football Festival. The programme is a joint initiative by The FA Women’s Super League (WSL), its lead partner Continental Tyres, Sport England and UEFA. The FA Girls’ Football Festivals will visit various venues up and down the country over the coming months providing girls with an exciting, interactive football experience. The festival offers something for everyone and is inclusive to all levels of ability, from youngsters enjoying their first involvement with football to regular players. The FA are looking to encourage at least 300 girls to attend from local schools. The programme will see informal, lively, festival style events which combine football, lifestyle and music to encourage girls to get involved. Those attending will also get the chance to play with the stars of the game as members of the England squad and FA WSL stars will also be at every event to meet, chat and have a kickabout with the girls. The festival has 3 key aims, these are to drive participation, recruit new players, retain existing players and finally to raise awareness of the FA Women’s Super League.
So if your local school is new to the game or love it already, please encourage them to bring their girl’s team along to The FA Girls' Football Festival at Leeds Trinity University. For more information and how to enter – Please contact Caroline Hulme, Women and Girls Football Development Officer on caroline. hulme@wrcfa.com If you are looking for an opportunity for your daughter to get involved in girls football, watch out for a number of soccer or multi-sports clubs, if they are ready to join a team great examples locally of girls football are Horsforth St Margaret’s (www.hsmafc.com) and Guiseley (www.guiseleyjuniors.co.uk), Wortley FC Ladies (www.wortleyfc.org.uk) and Farsley AFC Ladies (www.farsleyafc.com) For more information on Women and Girls football and how to get involved please visit the following link were you can find your local Women and Girls Football club: http://www.westridingfa.com/~/media/countysites/ wrfa/documents/women-and-girls-football-provisionsbooklet-2012-2013-(2).ashx

READER TESTIMONIAL After a life-time of working in newspapers, your little gift through my letterbox is both welcome and awaited. There are no dirty newsprint fingers as your mag is beautiful, quality, glossy paper and the A5 size makes it perfect to read anywhere. The content is full of great local news and in the last edition I found out about Horsforth Cricket Club’s open day which I took my little Grandson along to. Without your mag I would never have found out! The adverts have become my Bible, and I refer to them for everything. I have used brilliant, local, reliable contractors and have found lots of amazing deals which have saved me money - giving me excellent local service and a feel good factor of supporting local businesses. To be eco-friendly I share my mag, it is read from cover to cover first and then passed on to family who might need this or that, or simply enjoy “COVERED”. The name says it all, you've got it Covered!

Go Glam! This Is Chelsea, The Only Way Is Essex. If these programmes have taught us anything it’s that glamour is on-trend. Whilst the ladies of Chelsea might be more understated than the glamourpusses in Essex, the message is clear – Go Glam! If you’re more akin to jeans and a jumper, don’t worry – here’s Covered’s 5 top tips for getting ahead in the glamour race.
1
Get a tan
Orange is not a natural skin tone, nor is it particularly appealing so try and steer clear of budget methods for home application. Under the sun is of course the best place to get a natural tan (taking precautions such as skin block). If you can’t rely on a regular dose of sun or want an instant glow, visit an established salon for a spray tan or jump on a sunbed. Salon’s will offer a range of advice and should have your safety in mind too.
Fashion, Hair And Beauty
2
Put some bounce in your hair
‘flat’ or ‘lifeless’ are not positive words when it comes to glamour. ‘Volume’ and ‘shape’ are. And the good news is- back combing your hair is back on the menu! Blow dry your hair upside down, add loadsa hairspray and pin up appropaitely for a mane worthy of Farrah Fawcett! – or Cheryl Cole- depending on your genaration…
3
Paint your lips
Remember the bluish tinge your lips took on during the long winter months? Well no more pale mouths! Paint your lips using this seasons brightest colours, whether that be scarlet, apricot, fuscia or wine, don’t forget a slick of moisturisng colour when stepping out of the house this Summer.
4

25
Please yourself!
Ditch the pastels and earthy tones. Cast out neutrals and show the world your confident side! There’s nothing wrong with wearing a beautiful, understated blouse, or perfectly put togther trouser suit- but it doesn’t scream FUN! Step out of your comfort zone this Summer and dress to impress. Choose bright colours to reflect your mood, choose a flattering cut to make you feel good, and select those shoes that are just that extra inch higher than your everyday shoe, just to shake things up a bit. If you’re still struggling for inspiration, bob in to an independant salon or boutique. You’re far more likely to receive true customer service and genuine advice often lacking in the chain stores.
Don’t forget your fingertips
We are all guilty of neglecting our nails, but remember they say a lot about our general health (brittle, dry with white spots anyone?) Lets treat our nails with a bit of respect and give them centre stage for once. Bright nail polish gives a playful, fun and lighthearted twist to your outfit and should be considered a must have accessory!

Horses and Hats at Wetherby Racecourse
It’s party time – many workgroups and friends made a night of it. These ladies had just cabbed in from Harrogate.
Being an entirely National Hunt (jumps) racecourse, Wetherby pulled down its Tote betting shutters for the summer on 30 May and won’t be raising them again until 16 October. Though they certainly went out in style. Their annual Ladies’ Evening was complemented by a hat show presented by Leeds College of Art and showing the creations of eleven of their final year students.
There were several mini-shows that evening, each concluded by a group line-up.

Leeds United Seals the Deal in Horsforth Leeds United is the only Football League side serving the Leeds area. Many fans remember their successes in the early nineties, and some of those the glory years in the early seventies. So, Championship League LUFC is always under pressure to provide a Premiership profile in the county of Yorkshire. One of the ways LUFC engages with the county’s footballing community is by investing in coaching at both central and local levels. The club’s own academy is at Thorp Arch, with several satellite training centre dotted round the county. They also have feeder clubs in north, south, east and west Leeds – large clubs with a substantial youth element and a proven commitment to bringing them on. To that end, LUFC recently cemented their relationship with Horsforth St Margaret’s, formalising their appointment as Leeds’ feeder club for the north of the city. It’s very much a two-way relationship. Yes, LUFC gets to spot and develop local exceptional talent. But the club’s youth teams, and their coaches, reap the rewards of being trained directly by Leeds’ highly qualified coaching staff. A win/win situation? Ask again in five years, maybe ten...
27
Leeds United formalised their relationship with Horsforth St Margaret’s youth sides in May. HSM is now LUFC’s feeder club for north Leeds and has some training sessions with Leeds’ highly qualified coaches. Some sixty youngsters and their HSM coaches got exactly that on 18 May.

The sign of summer: Strawberries should be flowering well – use nets or curtains to protect crops as they grow.
fill your freezers with this delicious crop, and look forward to rhubarb crumbles all over the winter.
We hope all the frosts have now passed, and it is safe to plant out all the tender perennials you have been keeping warm indoors. These may include dahlias, chrysanthemums, pelargonium and many others. There is also still time to sow seed of half hardy annuals, draw patterns in the soil when sowing them to create a stunning display when they flower. Delphiniums, lupins, echiums and other hardy plants are all growing tall; insert stakes to keep them upright. Large house plants benefit from a summer holiday, so stand them outside in a sunny and sheltered spot – remembering to feed them and water on a regular basis. It is also useful to use either organic or non organic sprays on a regular basis, to prevent any build ups of pests and diseases in your garden. Slugs and snails are a perennial problem, so continue to use your favourite method of keeping them under control. Strawberries and other soft fruits are flowering well, which means using nets or curtains to protect your crops as they develop. Our wet spring has made rhubarb crowns grow exceptionally well, and cropping may continue to the end of July. This means you can

Trojan Efforts at Otley Show – Damp Burley Juniors FC but not Dampened Elsewhere in this issue you can read how Horsforth St Margaret’s FC has reaffirmed its FA Charter Standard by entering into a partnership with Leeds United. As LUFC’s official north Leeds “feeder” club, players and coaches alike benefit from the professional expertise that Leeds has to offer. But HSM is far from alone in what it has done for junior football in the area. For example, Burley Juniors (founded in 1985) now has 300 junior players. Both sexes, spread across twelve age ranges and competing in several leagues. Now called Burley Trojans Juniors, the club’s most spectacular and headline contribution to junior football, both locally and afar, is their annual May five-a-side tournament. Last month saw their 22nd. Yes, 22nd. Almost 200 teams of seven (with reserves), from all over the north. Competing over two days and on twelve pitches. Burley Trojans Juniors has attracted a number of sponsors, some big named, over the years. And a small army of volunteer organisers and officials – year round, as well as on the day. But there’s always room for more help – and more players.

Sisters in creativity A hive of creative activity is to be found in Joy Godfrey’s studio, in a yard off Ilkley’s Nelson Road. There she and her sister, Christine Bailey, work separately and together in a variety of media. Joy is well known in Ilkley for her screen prints and etchings inspired by local landmarks, notably the Moor in all its manifestations – including the Saxon stones. She is now rediscovering a love for oils; the medium favours freedom and the canvases need neither frame nor glass. Her studio bears witness to her many talents, including bronze castings. At an age (which we will not disclose!) when most people are enjoying retirement, Joy is on the look-out for more challenges – maybe an MA, as she told Covered. Check out Joy’s work on www.joygodfrey.com
Chris with a selection of fused glass
Chris started as a potter, then discovered a passion for porcelain. Inspired by nature, notably rocks and water, she produced fine and delicate shapes and exhibited widely in the North. After a few years out, delving into healing and meditation, Chris returned to ceramics at Harrogate College of Art and Design. A study in motion and movement, focussing on Strid Wood at Bolton Abbey, prompted an exploration of window hangings, using silk and glass, and led ultimately to working in fused glass as well as ceramics. The sisters are running a joint exhibition at Otley Courthouse from 8 July to 3 August. Joy will be showing her latest screenprints of Brimham Rocks, alongside the original watercolours which inspired them. Chris will be showing her colourful and varied fused glass plates and bowls, together with her landscape-inspired earthenware.
Community Fair Comes To Otley Thursday 27th June will see Prince Henry’s Association hold Otley’s first ever ‘Community Fair’, in the grounds of Prince Henry’s Grammar School. A packed event is expected to draw in the crowds and, amongst other things, main attractions will be; locally made arts & crafts, a showcase of talent from Prince Henry’s and local primary schools, a farmers’ market, inflatables, martial arts, the army cadets, pony/donkey rides, a hog-roast, burgers, candy floss, chocolate fountains and the ‘famous’ Prince Henry’s Association Tombola. Local businesses and potential stall holders are invited to get involved in this exciting event. EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY Is it safe to exercise in pregnancy…absolutely yes! Unless you have a medical complication and have been told by a medical professional not to. Many women want to remain physically active during pregnancy and those who are not used to exercise can easily keep active to keep well and healthy. Friends busy clearing the sheepfold entrance
Parkinson’s Park – local lads’ legacy for the people of Guiseley Parkinson’s Park sits behind the old Crompton Parkinson’s factory, now the Bellway Estate, on Netherfield Road, Guiseley. Back in time, the land was meadow and pasture off Kelcliffe Lane, one of the main routes from Guiseley town to the Chevin and Otley beyond. At Kelcliffe there was a tannery. In the 1930s, Frank and Albert Parkinson, ‘local lads’ who had built up the renowned electrical engineering company Crompton Parkinson, bought the land to develop as a park for the use of their workers and the people of Guiseley. In 1949 Crompton Parkinson held their first Children’s Gala in the park. This became an annual event until the 1990s when the factory was taken over and eventually closed and demolished. In 2011 the volunteer group Friends of Parkinson’s Park was formed. On 8 September 2013, they will re-establish the Children’s Gala as a regular Guiseley event. The Friends have also been looking at the ecological, geological and cultural history of the Park as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund project, All Our Stories. This is designed to help people all over the country explore the social history of their area. From 24-26 July 2013, an archaeological event will be under way. The same company who did the geophysics surveys on Time Team will do a survey of the Park, to see if more can be gleaned about the Park’s past lives. Details of that and other events – and much more fascinating information – on www.parkinsonspark.co.uk
Being active helps to maintain and improve fitness in pregnancy. It also improves your stamina and your ability to cope with labour. You will also get back in shape sooner after baby is born. Staying fit in pregnancy is easy. You can power walk, swim, attend aqua-natal classes or pilates. All of these will keep you stay fit and help you feel positive about yourself. If you like gym training your can continue however decrease the weights during the last few months of pregnancy. Runners should reduce the amount of ‘impact’ by combining running with power walking especially towards the end of the pregnancy. This will help reduce the stress on the hips, back and pelvic floor If you like exercises classes look for a qualified teacher who has a level 3 qualification in Exercise and Pregnancy and you will be in safe hands. If you are medically well it is safe to keep active throughout your pregnancy for a healthy and happy outcome. To America and back – the Clarke-Foley story In around 1880, Irish shepherd Martin Clarke came to Addingham from County Leitrim with his wife, Bridget. Eventually, all their six children emigrated to US; the last, James, in 1914/15. His sister Sarah married a New York attorney called Foley. With another sister, Agnes, a wealthy widow, they invested in real estate and later in the stock market and built up a considerable fortune.
Guiseley Lions Beer Festival Roars to £4500 The upstairs function room at Coopers Bar on Otley Road, Guiseley, was put to good use on 17/18 May when it hosted Guiseley Lions’ Third Annual Beer Festival. Small proved both beautiful and successful. Smaller than most other beerfest venues, the function room nonetheless accommodated 25 real ales plus a selection of cider and wine. In a venue more intimate than intimidating, some 400 guests over the four sessions helped raise almost £5000 for local charities. Perhaps the most local, and relevant, was the Callum Hall Trust. Callum, a barman at the nearby Station Inn, contracted a rare spinal infection that suddenly left him paralysed. Funds raised will go towards his recovery, mobility aids and, possibly, his participation in the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics in 2016. Anyone with enquiries about Guiseley Lions should look at their website or contact secretary Keith Hunt on 01943 864061. They are holding a coffee morning at Whittaker Firth Solicitors in Guiseley on 6 July and making an appearance at Guiseley Carnival on 30 June.
James returned several times to England. On the last occasion, he contacted the Bishop of Leeds, Rt Rev William Gordon Wheeler, in order to ask him to manage a bequest to benefit elderly people in the Ilkley-Addingham area. The result is Ilkley’s Clarke-Foley centre in Cunliffe Road, opened in 1981. Now run by seven staff and a team of volunteers, it is a highlight of life for the over-50s. Activities include art, bridge, yoga, country dancing, computers, indoor bowls and keep-fit. There is an orchestra, a dance band and a recorder group as well as a Senior Citizens’ club. The cafe is open Monday-Saturday for sandwiches, light refreshments, homemade cakes and soup. And you don’t need to be a Senior to come to occasional events, such as the Jane Austen Afternoon in June! Room hire too is available to all ages. Volunteers are always welcome, whether to join in existing activities or to initiate interest groups.
This tapestry traces the story of James Clarke and Sarah Foley. It is on display in the foyer

Making a difference in Mali – the Burley-Téréli Friendship Trust How does a Wharfedale village hook up with a village thousands of miles away, in the harsh Dogon country of Mali, one of the poorest parts of West Africa? In Burley’s case, the link with Téréli started as a result of long-term involvement with Christian Aid and Jon Snow’s ‘On the Line’ millennium initiative. Snow called it ‘Perhaps the most improbable link you can imagine’. But it works. As prime mover Mary Wood told Covered: “we have benefited from a better understanding of each other’s cultures and forged lasting friendships. Together we have made a difference.” Dr Zakari Saye, who was able to go through medical school with the help of the Trust, has been instrumental in deepening this friendship and has helped to co-ordinate community projects around Téréli. These include funding school equipment, medicines and maternity and water supply initiatives, thereby really improving the lives of the community. Involvement of the French Charity ‘Coup de Pouce’ and the commitment of Téréli’s young people to

BTFT’s latest project is building houses for teachers. 2012 was an incredibly hard year. The drought in 2011 led to a shortage of millet and a desperate food crisis. Generous donations enabled friends in Téréli to buy millet and share with surrounding villages. You too can make a difference! You too can be a Friend of Ilkley Moor! Living in Menston, Burley, Ilkley and Addingham, it is easy to take the Moor for granted and to assume that it looks after itself. Well, it doesn’t. Heather moorland is only semi-natural and needs continuous maintenance if it is not to revert to scrub and then forest. It is a hugely valuable resource, providing nesting cover for grouse, owls, hen harriers, golden plover, lapwing and curlew as well colonies of waders. Ling, heather, cotton grass and bilberries abound and adders and lizards make their home there, while mice and voles feed the birds of prey. There is also evidence that the blanket mires and peaty soils lock in and conserve carbon, making heather moorland a vital element in conservation. To us, this landscape is commonplace, but in fact is a rarity; three-quarters of the global total is here in Britain. The Moor is owned by Bradford MDC, but the Friends of Ilkley Moor play a vital role in its upkeep. Founded in 2008, they have funded footpath restoration and bracken control and established educational programmes and heritage trails. Inevitably, FoIM courts controversy, notably in its opposition to the shooting lease and in the creation of gravelled or paved paths. But there is no doubt that their activities have served to facilitate access,
Splash out for summer at Ilkley Lido Ilkley Lido was built in 1935 as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations for King George V. It is the only outdoor pool in the area and one of only 127 left in the country. Voted in the top ten by the Guardian, it has a unique shape – like a half mushroom – and enjoys far ranging views across Ilkley Moor. Sited only two minutes from Ilkley town centre, it offers children a 20 metre stretch of shallow water to splash in and adults swimmers a deeper section at the other end of the lagoon. The Lido also boasts a heated indoor pool, tennis courts, a putting green and a bowling green. With ramped access and disabled changing, the Lido is accessible for all. An outdoor water fountain, a café and picnic tables make it an ideal place to relax and cool down on a hot summer’s day.

As well as making a financial contribution, you can join volunteer working groups and get fit for free! The weekend of 21-22 June will see plenty of activity organised by the Friends of Ilkley Lido. On 21st, brave swimmers will celebrate the summer solstice at 5am and on 22nd Live at the Lido, showcasing local musical talent, will run from 5-11pm. The line-up includes Shatter the Skies, Boys off the Bench, Notion, Black Clover, Asylum, Beth Armitage, Texacana, The Puppeteers and Clear. There will be food from Aagrah, Ilkley Brewery Beer, wine, and soft drinks and tea and coffee from Le Chat Café. All funds raised will go towards supporting the work of the Friends group in improving the Lido. www.ilkleylido.co.uk

NEWS FROM SAFE HAVEN Once upon a time in a faraway land all the people had everything they needed to live and be happy, then came the big bad wolf and stole everything they possessed. They didn’t know which way to turn so they managed the best they could with what they had and all that God had provided in the natural sense. Then there came a day when a rich man passed by, he had great wealth and wished to help all those around him. The people wondered ‘how is this possible, how can this man do such things, surely he will run out of money and very soon’ but the man knew better, he knew from whence it came and from whom, he knew there was an endless supply of all the wealth in the universe at his disposal…as long as he continued to give generously it never ran out. Do you know a man in need, do you give of yourself or do you deny that the increase will come back to you. If only you will trust the one and only provider of all things good... we do, at Safe Haven.

The Romans in Ilkley – the Manor House Museum The Manor House, at the end of a cobbled alley off Church Street, is the oldest building in Ilkley and stands on the site of a Roman fort. In its six hundredodd years, it has had a variety of incarnations: a medieval administration centre, a large family house, a series of Victorian and Edwardian workers’ cottages. The Museum now housed there was established in 1892, when excavation of the Roman fort unearthed a wealth of artefacts and archaeological remains needing to be preserved. It had a variety of homes, finally coming to the Manor House in the 1950s, thanks to the local council and benefactor Percy Dalton – whose efforts saved the derelict building from demolition. The Manor House Museum is now one of Ilkley’s treasures, its displays tracing the town’s history from earliest times. Under the management of Bradford Art Galleries and Museums, it is also an exhibition space and education centre, with free entry and plenty to interest visitors of all ages. A flourishing voluntary group, the Friends of the Manor House, was formed some fifty years ago. Its members raise funds and put on talks on a range of
Menston Evening Townswomen’s Guild The Townswomen’s Guild is a national organisation founded in the 1920s, growing out of the Women's Suffrage movement and with thousands of members throughout the country. HQ is in Birmingham and the Princess Royal is Patron. The Menston guild started in the 1960s. They meet on second Wednesdays in Kirklands Community Centre and often have a speaker. On 19 June there is a talk about Beatrix Potter and on 10 July Mercury Movies will show films made by members. Outings are a feature; in July members will be going to Renishaw Hall near Sheffield and later to Burnby Hall Water Gardens at Pocklington, where they hold the National Collection of water lilies, and to
topics, as well as evening concerts – jazz, classical, folk – where the intimate space creates a special atmosphere. Visitors are welcome to enjoy free coffee and a talk on the last Friday of every month. Call 01943 600066 for more information.
Langlands Garden Centre nearby. The Guild has recently set up a Reading Group in association with Menston Library and plans a monthly luncheon club. Activities are mostly social but they also raise money for charity with a City of Bradford Charity Brass Band Concert every November, all profits going to Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Last year they raised £1500. Chairman Sue Burdett told Covered “we have an enthusiastic and hard working committee and 24 members. We would like more. We are a very friendly group of retired ladies and our activities are suitable for any ladies in the 60+ age group. Anyone who would like to come along to one of our meetings to see if they would like to join the Guild will be very welcome.” Contact 01943 872 662

All Creatures Great and Small In this new monthly feature, we’re going to be taking a regular look at all things feathered, furry, scaly or shelled! Regardless of how much you protest to a pet, there will come a point, especially if you’ve got kids, when the pestering will deplete your resilience. So, what makes for a good first pet? Here are some options to consider: PICK OF THE PETS
1
Hamster, Gerbil, Mouse or Rat
The stuff of nightmares for many adults, but rodents make wonderful pets for children. Food, water, bedding, and an exercise wheel are all it takes to keep them happy in the cage although they benefit from handling and can even learn tricks! Be warned though, left unsupervised they will head for the nearest hidey-hole and you might end up ripping floorboards to rescue them!
2
Guinea Pig
Although part of the rodent family, guinea pigs require a more hands-on approach than their smaller cousins and like to live in groups. Long-haired breeds require daily grooming, which is good practice for responsible pet ownership in later years. Why not consider adopting a couple? Try Bramley Cavies Rescue, who offer advice and have a variety of small animals ready for adoption. Visit: bramleycaviesrescue.com
Are you so proud of your pet you want to share it with the world? (Well, your local area at least!) Send us a snap with your pet’s name and a short description – we’ll pick the best of the bunch and publish in next month’s issue! To get us started, here’s a pic of the Editor’s hound, Shana - a Bulldog X Staffordshire Bull Terrier, rehomed through West Yorkshire Dog Rescue. Despite her tough exterior, she’s a real softie with bags of character that loves nothing more than a snooze on the sofa after a manic session of fetch in the park! Send your pet photos to: info@covered-magazine.net or text: 07999 138390 or post to the usual address (see P3)

Small Lizards
A great starter pet; after all, which child doesn’t want a mini Jurassic Park! Novice owners should seek advice before taking the plunge, though. Juvenile iguanas and monitors may look small and cute, but can grow to several feet in length. Bearded dragons or leopard geckos are small, docile and require little maintenance. With lizards, kids get the excitement of feeding them live food!
4
Rescue an Older Dog or Cat
Puppies and kittens are top of the want list for most kids, but the amount of patience and training required can make them a handful. Why not consider a more mature dog or cat? Older animals tend to have basic house training and are usually tamer, making them better companions for kids. As a rescue animal they will still need plenty of attention, so they’re great as a family pet! Do visit your local animal charity if you’re considering a pet! There are so many wonderful animals waiting to find their permanent home! Otley Singers Raise Over £800 Otley Singers Community Choir would like to thank all the people who supported their charity concert, 'Unity in Harmony' which took place on 3rd May at The Otley Courthouse. The concert was a sell out with people queuing in the foyer hoping to get in. The huge success of the concert meant that over £800 was raised for 'Singing for the Brain', which provides singing and company for people with Alzheimers and their carers. The singing takes place twice a month at The Otley Courthouse and the money raised will help this good work continue. The evening launched with a funny and lively ukulele-singing troupe called 'Three Chords Max' who made everyone laugh and set the mood for the rest of the evening. The choir sang 17 songs from around the world - from lively rock and pop (Stevie Wonder, Simon and Garfunkel), to haunting spiritual and gospel songs and folk. The choir mistress, Beccy Owen, (who has performed with Kate Rusby and Elvis Costello to name just two!) also played piano and sang a couple of beautiful solos. You can hear Beccy sing again on 27th June at The Otley Courthouse’s 'Celtic Connections' evening.
Sing for Heroes 2013! New choir seeks 40 men to sing their hearts out! If the only audience to hear you sing is your collection of rubber ducks in the bathroom you might be a little shy at unleashing your vocal talents in public. But award winning choral conductor Will Prideaux is convinced he could get you hitting the right notes in just 12 weeks as part of a new male choir. Sing for Heroes! is being launched with the aim of taking 40 men with a range of musical experience (including none!) and - over the course of 12 weeks – preparing them for a gala concert in aid of Help for Heroes in the spectacular setting of Leeds Town Hall. As the brains behind the project Will is not facing an easy task, but his credentials as Musical Director of both Leeds and Peterborough Male Voice Choirs should stand him in good stead. Will told Covered: "The whole idea of the project is to bring these people together as a community. We are creating a situation where they can come and have a go, get a warm welcome and not be judged”. To get the Sing for Heroes! project up and running introductory sessions are being held at the Carriageworks on Millennium Square on 11th and 12th July. Interested in getting involved? Email singforheroes@live.com or call John England on 07853 986034 for a free information pack.

Summer of '63 1963 - a pivotal year: for politicos and closet readers of The News of the World the Profumo affair. 1963 to redtop headline writers timestamps the Great Train Robbery. 1963 to Americans across the state and to a world of wide-eyed idealists marked the violent death of John F. Kennedy. 1963 to pop pickers was noteworthy for its ending of the domination of the American music moguls by the Mersey Beat. And to the anoraks, 1963 reminds of A4 60022's retirement: the record-breaking Mallard. It’s a hackneyed truth that if you can remember the 60s, you weren’t there. But as Freddy Forsyth writes in The Odessa File, everyone remembers where they were when they heard that JFK had been assassinated in Dallas. Was it really fifty years ago? The Friends of the King’s Hall, Winter Garden, and Ilkley Summer Festival have put together The Summer Of ’63. To remember that magic summer, or as your parents told you it was, join us in the King’s Hall on August the 2nd. Start with a fizz and canapé reception before enjoying supper throughout guest John Thirlwell's story, supported by newsreel
clips, of that never-to-be-forgotten year. The evening continues with the sound of the sixties, live from The Pepper Hearts, recorded from our DJ. There will even be Telstar! Tickets for both reception and supper are £30. A table for ten and the choice of table zone costs £285. Summer of 63 was the brainchild of Anne Hawkesworth (Councillor and Chairman of Ilkley Summer Festival). Having worked for the BBC on a soon-to-be released film about The Great Train Robbery, Anne realised what a fantastic year 1963 was. 2013 is the 50th anniversary of many such memorable events.
