Bob’s Bit Fantastic News! Only seven months after being voted “The Street in the worst state of repair” on the “Horsforth, let down by Leeds” web site I am delighted to report that work has now commenced on resurfacing the length of Broadgate Drive. Local residents are delighted with the result that makes the street safe again. Dangerous Crossing Following another near miss on the new Zebra crossing at the bottom of Broadgate Lane, Leeds City Council has been asked why a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights could not have been installed. This is a dangerous and fast road and the crossing has been situated in the worst possible location coming just after a major road junction. Do the people who plan our roads never consult with local residents?

The Town is still blighted by potholes, with new ones being reported daily, recent contacts with the “Horsforth, let down by Leeds” website have reported several large craters on Scotland Way which have been there since last year, large holes along the length of Westbrook Lane and dozens of holes and cracks along King Edward Avenue.

Update! Following last months article on the lack of suitable parking on Town Street, I asked why St Margaret’s school Car Park could not be made available at weekends. Subsequent to this I received an email from the Deputy Chair of Governors at the school stating “The school approached local councillors several years ago to ask for funding towards resurfacing the car park, with a view to allow the land to be used at weekends, this was refused” Direct Action As reported in last months edition, the team at “Horsforth in Bloom” have taken some direct action and repainted the signs that welcome visitors to Horsforth. A big “Thank you” goes out to all concerned.

clearly not the case. What is the official stance on repairs and timescales for repair? Roads throughout the city are checked on a A: regular basis by a team of highways officers and we also respond to calls from members of the public to
alert us to potholes. Dangerous defects are made safe in one day while other defects are attended to within 14 days, although these are often fixed much sooner. On average each year we fix nearly 10,000 pot holes. In Leeds over the past few years we have tried to channel as much of our available money as we can into doing planned repairs and resurfacing as this will benefit the city in the longer term, while at the same time doing our best to minimise the impact of potholes.

Edition Two of Covered included a letter from a resident in the Newlaithes area regarding a lack of rubbish bins and dog waste bins. Other readers have also voiced their concerns about a lack of waste bins and about the practicalities of current bins, I.E. once nearly full, litter is easily blown from them. Is there room in the budget to install better (covered) bins and more of them? This would potentially reduce the need for street cleaners in certain areas. Perhaps there is an opportunity for local businesses to sponsor bins, in a similar way to the sponsorship of roundabouts/grass verges?
Covered Magazine editor Chris Barnham accepted an invitation to City Hall for a meeting with Leeds City Council Chief Executive Tom Riordan and local councillors Brian Cleasby and Chris Townsley, with LCC Communications Officer Donna Cox also in attendance. HORSFORTH AGAINST THE CUTS MARCH IN SEPTEMBER The local alliance Horsforth Against the Cuts is known for its stand outside Morrison’s on Saturday mornings, and for appearances at events such as Horsforth Gala. On Saturday 17 September they took to the streets – marching the length of Town Street before turning at St Margaret’s Church Hall and arriving at Horsforth School with a 700 signature petition against the school’s decision to assume academy status in January. The debate about the school’s decision, the associated consultation process (or lack of it) and the effect on pupils (present and future) have been, and continue to be, argued elsewhere in Covered.
But as for the march itself? Well, to bystanders, there were two things which were immediately apparent. First, you had to wonder why the core of some forty or fifty protesters included an NUT delegation from Fylde, GMB, NHS, Socialist Party, Socialist Worker, Solidarity and Militant. Of course each of them has a trade unionist and/or political agenda in the face of Coalition cutbacks and initiatives. But in Horsforth? Was this the H Brigade of protestors, marching with equal commitment in Headingly the week before and Huddersfield the next? Secondly, where were the teachers, pupils and parents? With a significant adjustment for siblings and single parents, a school with 1500 or so pupils must have a similar number of parents. Where were they on the day? Were the teaching and support staff keeping their heads below the parapets? Is the reason indifference or is it acceptance (even approval) of the proposals? Or has the information/ consultation process been so poor that parents are unable to make an informed decision about their children’s education?

NSPCC GOLF DAY HELD IN MEMORY OF LOCAL MAN
Phillip Tate was aged only 32 when a freak snowboarding accident, in 2008 in Chamonix, caused him to fall 80 feet to his death. Phillip was raised in the Tate’s family home in Otley Old Road, Cookridge. He then attended Leeds Grammar School and Durham University before working with Ernst & Young, Arthur Andersen and, at the time, as an investments manager with Endless LLP in Leeds. His father and three brothers remain in business in the Leeds area, with brother Andrew (pictured with father Roger) having recently opened a showroom for Tate Windows on the Woodlands site next to Horsforth Station. Phillip Tate’s popularity at school, university and the workplace was underlined by the fact that many of the teams included players from those times. Indeed, the event had to be capped at 25 teams of four. A number of prizes were awarded on the day, right down from the best team (Leeds Metropolitan University) to the worst. There was also a champagne reception, dinner, charity auction (silent and live), raffle and dance. The real winner was NSPCC. £26000 had been raised by the end of the evening, with donations still rolling days later. The event proved so popular that the Tates are hoping to turn the event into an annual fixture.

“Oddly, Oddly, Onker My First Conker”
Strangely enough this is the phrase one should say on finding your first conker of the season, apparently this ensures good fortune and few tangles throughout the coming season! Let’s hope then that this mantra was said by the children in the Froebelian school playground as the new term started. Conkers is a favourite playground game with Froebelian school pupils during the months of September and October and the rules are taken rather seriously, as is the hunt for the ‘perfect’ conker. ‘A good conker will sink in water’ said one pupil who was playing with a gold painted conker, ‘Soaking it in vinegar overnight also makes it harder’ said his opponent as he smashed the gold conker in two! Each lunchtime sees games of conkers going on in all corners of the playground, Year 6 pupils have collected, decorated and with the assistance of the

Give Covered a call to claim Dear Covered, Thank you for helping to raise the issue of Horsforth School's proposal to Academise. Although many people are justifiably angry at the lack of consultation, I think we also need to look at the consequences of becoming an Academy. To justify this move, the school has one argument only; that this is purely for financial gain. This is rather dubious since the Secretary of State for Education, and Stuart Andrew MP, have both said that schools will gain no such advantage, so what’s going on? Parents need to be very clear here, any extra money is required to pay private companies for the educational services that were provided by
The school will be dependent entirely on private companies who operate for profit. We know how profit is made; by cutting corners. And we have many good examples of what happens; British Rail, Energy Companies, Southern Cross Care Homes to name but a few. You don't need to have a crystal ball to see the consequences of this in schools, especially in an environment of cuts. How long before we see the school having to make 'savings' by using unqualified staff, inexperienced staff, video links rather than teachers, outsourcing subject teaching to third parties? It will do no good to complain to our councillors because the school will answer to no one but themselves and the Secretary of State. Horsforth Academy would be completely independent of local control and would be free to change the school calendar, the admissions policy and teachers' terms and conditions. The School may say that it will not change these things, but these assurances are worthless. Even if you trust these current governors, they have the power to appoint all further governors bar two token parent governors. This proposal is truly worrying. Sue Coatman West End Close
Dear Covered, I am a young professional that moved to Horsforth with my partner a year ago. We have recently decided that we would like to buy a house here and settle down. Dear Covered, I have just read the latest issue of Covered and was interested to read of your campaign regarding cars parking on pavements in particular areas.
Dear Bob and Chris.
I walk to work every day and am getting really annoyed at inconsiderate parking on Broadgate Crescent, where some cars park with all four wheels on the pavement and also on Horsforth Broadway. In spite of the council providing more than adequate off road parking here there are still plenty of cars parking on the pavement area, which means I have to walk on the road. Also I would like to point out the danger I have encountered while using the zebra crossing on Low Lane at the junction with Broadgate Lane. I use this crossing twice a day and have lost count of the times I have almost been knocked over. I have had drivers accelerating and also pretending not to see me so they don’t have to stop. I dread crossing here. On many occasions I have been half way across when a driver coming the opposite way has almost hit me. I did ask the council if they could make this a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights, but my reply was a quote from the Highway Code telling me how to cross at a zebra crossing! I was also asked to take down number plates of drivers who didn’t stop or were speeding. This is impossible as I have a job to go to! I am extremely angry that pedestrian safety is so low a priority! Thank you to everyone involved in getting Broadgate Drive fixed, it is wonderful now. I am very happy and very grateful for all the hard work you have done to get Leeds to mend all the potholes. Please keep up the good work. Cindy Croft Dear Covered, Having read articles in Covered magazine, I thought it would be worth getting in touch regarding (another!) litter problem. Since moving to Horsforth last year, I've noticed an ongoing litter, fly-tipping and dog-fouling problem on the playing fields adjacent to Drury Avenue and the surrounding ginnels. This field is popular with dog-walkers and families, and could be a lovely green space for Horsforth residents, but it is clearly neglected and abused. One obvious reason for this is the complete lack of litter and dog bins on or around the field. It's also distressing to see the litter being mown up when council contractors cut the grass, producing dangerous shards of metal and glass. The council recently re-installed the goalposts on these playing fields, presumably with the (worthwhile) intention of providing a recreational facility for local residents, but I wonder whether any of us will enjoy a kick about amongst broken glass, dog faeces and condom packaging?! I raised my concerns with the town and city council back in January and, while I received a supportive response from one town councillor, I was eventually told by a City Council Parks Officer that the litter was regularly cleared and that "The amount of rubbish collected does not justify a litter bin". My experience, and photographic evidence, suggests otherwise. I have just sent another complaint to Leeds City Council and await their response. I would be interested to know whether other residents have contacted you about this problem. Best regards, Ms A.L., Horsforth CoveredMagazine

The Path to Relationship Perfection!
Local Ladies
Relationships are an integral part of our lives, whether it is with parents, children, friends or partners. The people we live with are the ones we spend the most time with and so tend to be the ones who press our buttons! Those marked ‘irritation’, ‘frustration’ or the ‘why can’t he pick his towel/clothes up off the floor’ button! So how can we keep our relationships harmonious? The important thing to remember is that we can’t make people change. The only person we can change is ourselves. Relationships tend to be mirrors of ourselves. What we are, so we attract. We might not like the idea, but that's how it is! If your partner judges or criticises you, then the chances are that you also do the same. I know, it’s hard not to react when we are challenged in this way, but the only way to keep a relationship flowing smoothly is to stop
reacting. To turn away. When we ourselves stop judging, criticising, controlling (we love to do this!) and start being the best person we can be, then we will miraculously find that the path to true love really does run smoothly.

It’s a Dirty Job…. And You Don’t Have to do it!
Do you know of anybody that enjoys cleaning their oven? The list of people that do must be pretty short, or non-existent. Here’s some good news though; “The most loathed household chore" is music-to-the-ears of Ovenu's technicians whose sole aim is to restore even the dirtiest of ovens to a pristine level of cleanliness. "In real terms, the householder just does not have the equipment nor the expertise to emulate our standards of cleanliness" says Ovenu's local boss, Richard Greenwood and whilst most first timers to the service are keen to be given an assurance of value-for-money, their fears are soon allayed once they see the finished job.
To learn more about overcoming life’s challenges visit Susan’s website: www. susanharpertodd.com
One of the really good aspects of dealing with Ovenu is that the company website (www. ovenu.co.uk) has a short video which illustrates the cleaning process and that, coupled with the hundreds of testimonials from clients, is proving to be a very useful and persuasive tool. Ovenu is the UK's largest oven valeting business and can be contacted locally on 0113 2089787.

5 Tips for a Healthy Mouth You’d be forgiven for thinking that some people had two, or even three! But no, despite the amount of vocabulary some can utter, we have just one mouth. Ivory Dental’s Bradley Thornton gives us his top tips for keeping yours in shape for a lifetime.
1
: Start Early – Ensure children start coming to the dentist early. Bring young children with parents to get them acclimatized. Children should see the dentist as early as possible depending on the confidence of the child. Preventative measures such as fissure sealers and fluoride varnishes reduce the likelihood of decay and should be applied to adult teeth as early as possible.
2
: Become a Regular – Visit the dentist and hygienist regularly. Dental problems only become noticeable when they are advanced so it is important to have check-ups regularly to catch any problems early.
3
:Be Systematic – Use a fluoride toothpaste to clean each tooth individually CoveredMagazine
COSMETIC PROCEDURES one by one, twice a day. Don’t forget to clean between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes as these areas are missed with normal brushing. A hygienist can give you all the techniques and tools but it is up to you to follow instruction between visits.
4
: Be Healthy – A healthy diet rich in vitamins, minerals and low in sugars, drinking plenty of water will keep your body and mouth healthy. Dental decay is caused by the sugars you eat turning your mouth acidic. Your saliva has a natural buffer to neutralize this acid but if you snack on sugary foods too often, the saliva cannot work fast enough so you get tooth decay. If you do eat sugary foods, limit them to after meals to reduce the number
of times your mouth becomes acidic. Chewing sugar free gum after food speeds up the neutralizing process. :Care for Dentures – Dentists don’t just check 5 teeth! Even if you have
comfortable full dentures, it is important to see the dentist regularly so they can check all the soft tissues are healthy. Whenever possible, remove dentures after meals and rinse. Take dentures out every night and leave in a solution such as Steradent giving them a brush and good rinse in the morning. Autumn gold - bagging fallen leaves can be a good investment for the future
With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
This is the time to check your compost heaps, as you will need this home made material to spread on the areas cleared from your vegetable crops. It is also good for spreading around your garden plants and shrubs, either digging in or leaving on top to revitalise your soil. Tree leaves are falling everywhere, if you can fill black bin liners with them, add water and make some holes in the bottom – you will have lovely leaf mould in approximately one to two years.

“Neutering – the Rescue Challenge” Only the dog should worry about neutering!
With only four out of every ten puppies remaining in the same home for life, it’s no wonder that animal welfare charities encourage owners to do the responsible thing and get dogs neutered.
cancer and pyometra, which is where the womb fills with pus and can kill a dog within hours.
West Yorkshire Dog Rescue, who handle between thirty to forty calls every day from owners looking to rehome a dog, ensure that all the dogs that pass through their care are neutered. This leaves the charity with a monthly bill of around £1,5000 in vets fees – a huge sum for a small charity supported entirely by public donation. It’s a real challenge for those involved in animal rescue.
Neutering your dog is a simple procedure; the dog is usually admitted to the vet in the morning and collected the same evening. Rest is important for a few days after the operation but dogs cope very well and recover remarkably quickly, stitches are removed after 10 days. Costs vary according to the size of dog and it is worth shopping around as prices vary too. If you are on a low-income then some animal charities may offer assistance or discounted rates.
Other than reducing the amount of unwanted dogs, there are health benefits too - male dogs eliminate the chance of testicular and prostate cancer, and for female dogs neutering eliminates the risk of ovarian

Latino – the Area’s Tile Specialists What’s the difference between a shop that sells tiles and a Tile Specialist? If you’re waiting for a punchline then sorry to disappoint you. If you’re in the market for new tiles, then you’ll be interested in what Mark Leyland of Latino Tiles in Guiseley had to tell us. “At Latino we have pride in our knowledge, experience and trade contacts. Having worked in the industry for twenty years, we’ve built relationships with some of Europe’s leading manufacturers and we offer many lines that are exclusive to us in this area.”
Latino has a large showroom which is all on one level so customers can browse a huge range of mosaics, slate, limestone, marble and Italian porcelain tiles at leisure, without being hassled by commission hungry sales staff. If you do need advice, Mark or one of his team are always on-hand to help in the friendly, informal way that has made this family business the areas number one tile specialist. “We don’t just sell tiles” added Mark .

Old Mods in Coup Old Modernians Rugby Union side have unveiled the coup of the year with the signing on of ex-Leeds Rhino’s player Damien Gibson. Gibson made his first appearance for the side at the beginning of this month and played a part in their close fought 26-25 victory over Burley at home. The Mods have had a tough start to the campaign but are sure to be boosted by the former Wales International’s arrival at the club.
Horsforth St. Margaret’s Round-Up The junior football season is well and truly underway and teams throughout the Horsforth St. Margaret’s setup have been playing their first few games of the campaign over the past few weeks. In their Craven, Aire and Wharfe League qualifying leagues, the Under-11 Mustangs have made a terrific start with four wins out of four including a 10-0 win over Thackley. The Stallions too have a 100% record with wins over Calverley, Queensbury and Farsley Celtic. The Broncos on the other hand, have found it slightly tougher with no wins so far in a tough qualifying league.
Ex-Leeds' Rhino Damian Gibson takes the ball in his first game for Old Mods.

Currently a coach for the Under 20’s Leeds Rhino’s Gibson has joined together with the Cookridge outfit as they look to improve their position in Yorkshire Division 3. have won their first four matches in the Garforth League taking them to the top of Division 2. Whilst in the Craven Aire & Wharfe Division B, the Twisters, last seasons Division C champions, have had a tough start to the season. The Union side contest they home games in Cookridge and welcome support for the side likely to be vastly improving as the season progresses. Sanderson Plays Snooker’s World Number 1 17-year-old snooker player Sanderson Lam, faced a dream match a few weeks ago in the Player’s Tour Championship as he played two-time World Champions Mark Williams. The former Horsforth School student, who lives in Tinshill, met ‘The Welsh Potting Machine’ in the first round of the Players’ Tour Championship which held in Furth, Germany at the end of August. Lam played well in the qualifying rounds with a 4-2 win over fellow Englishman Shane Castle before beating German Stefan Gerst 4-1 to earn a place in the main draw.
Tinshill’s Sanderson Lam takes aim
He was then drawn to face one of the most successful players in the sport, Williams in the First Round, a match which was also chosen by Eurosport to be screened live on television. Unfortunately, william’s experience showed as he took a 4-0 victory over Sanderson, to progress to the next round.

In other news, the club have launched a Facebook page, which can be found by searching ‘Horsforth St. Margaret’s AFC’ and they can be followed on Twitter @HorsforthSMAFC. Finally, the club’s annual dinner will be held on Saturday November 26th at the Stansfield Arms, Apperley Bridge. If you’re interested in booking tables or want further information, please contact Sarah Smith on (0113) 2582815 or e-mail sarahsmithhorsforth2@ hotmail.co.uk.
Although he didn’t win, Lam was still delighted to have played against Williams and in front of a TV audience. He said “It was a great experience and even though I lost, I had a good time and the feeling playing in front of a packed arena and cameras is one that I’ll never forget.”

Fairweather Travel
In terms of results to the opening of the season, Fairweather have just had a month of home games for reasons unbeknown and that is now to be followed up by a month of away games to look forward to. Amongst those the Green and Blacks face some tricky contests and cup matches at the likes of Hunslet, Halton Moor and Bradford. It’s been a stop-start to the season due to injuries and unavailability which has seen the club suffer slightly in the opening few matches of the new season.

Horsforth Cricket Club Season Round Up. Horsforth CC suffered a bitter-sweet end to the 2011 cricket season. The first team wrapped up their season with a fourth consecutive victory. If they had been able to show the same form throughout the season (and avoided two shock defeats at the hands of rivals Hall Park) then they surely would have been pushing for promotion. Overseas player Adam Mabb flew back to Australia having qualified for the League Averages for both batting and bowling. Quick bowler Andrew Robinson also qualified for the first team bowling averages, finsihing third in the Division C table.
with the bat were Elliot Mason & Johnny Bell, while skipper Nick Taylor & Alex Myers were the leading wicket-takers. All four of these players are juniors which points to a promising future for the club.
The disappointing area that Fairweather will have to contend with will be losing both Anthony Bell, who cleaned up at the end of season awards and midfield general Chris Markham in November for at least a year as they leave the local area for pastures new.
Of course, it shouldn't be forgotten that this was a trophy-winning season for Horsforth, with the Headingley T-20 League & Play-off trophies captured earlier in the season.
Club training has now moved for the winter periods, manager Martin Woods commented: “the training is really going well so far and our all round game is sure to improve as a result of the facilities available to us on a weekly basis.”
Here's to more success next year!

Harriers 27th Annual 10k
Horsforth Harriers held their 27th annual 10k race at the end of September, where a remarkable 437 runners took part, a great response to this year’s club race. The race itself was won by Baildon runner Quentin Lewis who flew home in a phenomenal time of 34 minutes and 28 seconds.
Covered Magazine hog Rob Furness was the first of the Horsforth Harriers runners to cross the line, doing so in 38 minutes and 32 seconds. That time represented a personal best and one that the Harriers and Rob will have been delighted with.
Patched-up Yarnbury Skip to the Top Yarnbury 1st XV have defied the odds and the injury list to go joint top of the Yorkshire League 2 after an impressive 31-7 victory over Skipton. The injury struck side has had no choice but to quickly blend the youth with the experience and are reaping remarkable rewards as they remain unbeaten after the opening four games of the season. Stand-Off Stephen Riley is deserved of some plaudits, excellently linking up the back and forward play to allow an air of elegance to the sides overall game. Hard tackling centres Ben Horner and Jason Avieson have bolstered the Yarnbury defence and played pivotal parts in the successful start to the season that the club is enjoying. The only undefeated side in the division so far, Yarnbury will be looking to do the local area proud in the tough matches that follow this month. Away trips to 4th place Wath and joint leaders Leodiensians are fast approaching while a home fixture against Bradford Salem promises to be well contested. Follow the progress of the Brownberrie Lane side in Covered on a regular basis now that the new season is underway.
Leeds Trinity University College’s Rugby League side are soon to begin their assault on the new season and with the introduction of new recruits to the team. The university side known as the ‘Trinity Titans RL’ have experienced some good success in recent years and will be determined to continue that taste for victory in the new season. So far the side have played local university rivals Leeds University with the Titans running out comfortable 44-4 winners. The University side will also face bitter rival Leeds Metropolitan in a final pre-season warm-up and will be going all out to ensure another victory. Club Chairman Luke Handley and the squad are sure to have high hopes for the Titans this season and will be approaching each game with an expectancy to win. The Titans play all of their matches on Wednesday afternoons and welcome home support at the university campus on Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth.
