rest of the people what is good for them. Populists around the world are using this to their advantage.
Boris Johnson called a general election in Britain to be held on December 12 this year. The Conservatives are up by an average of around 10 points at the time of writing, but we’ve all seen how well polls have been performing of late. Over in the US, impeachment hearings have been going on in the House of Representatives, into whether the President used his office for personal gain. The accusation is that he withheld military aid to Ukraine, unless the government there held an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden’ son Hunter, over business dealings he had there. The evidence presented so far seems compelling, and impeachment seems likely. This means a trial would be held in the US Senate as to the President’s guilt, and therefore removal from office. 66 of the 100 Senators have to vote guilty for this to occur. The Republicans, however, already hold a slim majority in the Senate, and the chances of them voting to remove a President from their own party are slim, at best. According to latest US polling, the impeachment of the President only ranks as the 10th most important issue. And Trump voters will only be galvanised further to support him.
Both of these current events are intriguing to say the least. •
