AZTECA Taqueria Tommy:

Making our way south through Mexico, we settled on the Oaxacan Coast. We rented a hut with amazing ocean views for two hundred dollars a month. We had electricity, sometimes, and no running water. We lugged 20 litre bottles down long dusty dirt roads. But more important than the muscles we were building during this period of our lives, was an extraordinary and insatiable appetite for Mexican food.

In March of 2013 we moved to Mexico.

We had little money and our passports - mine embossed with an eagle and Tommy’s with marsupials, meant our different birth nations necessitated perpetual motion. We were adventure and culture junkies. We’d been travelling for 2 years, since falling in love in a tiny Laotian village in Southeast Asia.

Time and our metabolisms were on our side. We were sucking the marrow out of our early twenties and eating, a lot.

Mealtime, previously dictated by the sun’s whereabouts, became a constant. The smell of fresh tortillas hung in the air like fog settles in a valley, enveloping Delving into Mexican food was a big fat (literally) adventure. Every morning we’d buy fresh corn tortillas from a neighbouring abuelita (little grandma in Spanish), still warm of course.

Our mornings were spent fishing for tuna which we grilled on a dug-out BBQ. Topped with an enormous variety of salsas and hugged by a tortilla. We were living ‘la vida dulce’ - the sweet life.

All of this to say when we decided to settle on the Northern Beaches, we couldn’t shake those incredible memories and so we decided to recreate them. AZTECA Taqueria was born on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in 2017.
