Mister Zimi BY Laura Blasetti

Zoe, tell us a bit about yourself and your background. I am a Melbourne girl but I have called Bali home with my husband, Jimi, for the past two years – I moved there for my label Mister Zimi. It all started when I took a sketch to a local tailor, and once the garment was made, this leather jacket became my go-to item and all my friends wanted one! And the rest as they say, is history. I think I died a little when model Jess Hart wore a Mister Zimi Jacket out in NYC one night, and blogged about it on her personal blog! How long have you been in the fashion industry? Three years. What inspired you to become a fashion designer? My jacket! I realized there are others out there like me who simply cannot find the right jacket,

or dresses in shops. So I decided it was time to create my own. What’s the best part of your job? Working with my husband, living in a beautiful place like Bali and loving what I do! Describe your latest collection. 70’s Woodstock vibe with hints of jeweled tones. If you could choose one piece from your winter collection that you couldn’t live without, what would it be and why? I am a big fan of my mimi boots – I wear them with everything! Maxis, jeans, leather pants, mini-dresses - they just make everything look so effortless and they are super comfy. Which trends stand out for you this season? Blouses - they are so chic and you can create so many looks with them. 13

Describe your three winter wardrobe essentials. Leather jacket, slouchy cardigan and of course, boots! Where do you find your fashion inspiration? Everything around me - from beaches, traveling, my friends, home. Jimi, my husband actually designs some of the prints we use, and this inspires me to turn these prints in to wearable wardrobe pieces! What are you coveting right now? Right now I am coveting the leather leggings from our present winter collection. I am currently eight and a half months pregnant 14

and I have been unable to wear them. I’m in Melbourne to have the baby and the weather is perfect and getting cooler. I have also been getting cravings for lots of things; you wouldn’t want to be standing between me and a donut! What’s next on the cards for Mister Zimi? We’ve just launched our e-commerce store, which was a great step to the Mister Zimi brand, and will no doubt contribute to our global market. I think we will focus on our online store, and develop more offerings for our loyal Mister Zimi clients.

onay Meijer by Vanessa Testa

Donay Meijer, the stunning ex-girlfriend of BERNARD Tomic, speaks exclusively with Covet Editor, Vanessa Testa.

Tell us a bit about who Donay Meijer is? Your surname is quite unique – what is your background/heritage? I am a young, driven pharmacy student who has a love for fashion and I’m lucky enough to experience both at the moment. I’m easy going, I don’t take life too seriously and I enjoy meeting new people and helping others. I am South African and my surname comes from my father who is Dutch. My family and I moved over to Australia 14 years ago as they saw a better future here for my brother and I. Since moving here on our own, we are a very close family who have had to work hard to start a new life in Australia. We couldn’t be happier now, Australia is the best country and I feel so privileged to be an Australian citizen.

You recently split with tennis star Bernard Tomic, how are you coping with the break up? Are the media giving you a hard time? I’m doing really well. Obviously going through any breakup is difficult and especially in my case as it was very publicised, but at the end of the day you can’t let what everyone else says affect you. The people close to me know who I really am, and that is what matters. I have the most amazing family and friends who have been extremely supportive. On top of that, I’ve always had a really positive outlook on life. Everything happens for a reason and I have so many things to be grateful for, so I’m just focusing on my goals and aspirations now. You’re successful in your own right currently studying Pharmacology while juggling a modelling career, how do you manage that? 17

Yes, I am extremely busy juggling my degree, working in my pharmacy as well as doing modelling, but I manage to stay on top of it. I’ve always been involved even in high school as school Vice Captain, Interact President, Science Ambassador. Organisation is the key to managing my time well. What’s the best modelling job you’ve done and why? The best modelling job I’ve done was probably for the Business GC swim shows. I really enjoy working at fashion shows as you get to show a little bit of your own personality; I always have fun at these events! You were recently asked to attend the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival as a guest of Lavazza, what was your role? Who was your favourite designer or show during the festival? Yes, I was fortunate enough to be a VIP guest of Lavazza and I came to Melbourne and watched two LMFF shows. I also signed the massive Lavazza cup and met some amazing people such as Megan Gale, who is so beautiful and someone I’ve always looked up to. I loved the David Jones show as it had so many of my favourite Australian designers in it, such as KJ by Kirrily Johnston and Thurley. What do you do to stay fit and healthy? Any tips for our lady readers? I love going to the gym, I find the group fitness classes much more fun to do and once you see results and your fitness improving it’s a great motivation to keep you going. It’s all about getting into a good routine and setting realistic results for your body; finding a gym buddy also helps. As a pharmacy student I’ve also been privileged enough to learn about health and nutrition. It’s all about educating people on choosing the right foods that are high in protein, with a low GI that will keep you fuller for longer. Eating small, regular meals is also good. As well as this the importance of nutritional foods and supplements high in antioxidants, Omega-3, and essential vitamins and minerals. Also not 18

to be too strict on yourself its okay to have cheat meals, it’s all about eating everything in moderation. You’re an advocate for dressing for your body shape and not just following trends; what pieces in your wardrobe can you always rely on to make you feel and look good? Yes, I definitely think it’s important every girl has well fitting basics that suit their body shape - regardless of the brand. I rely on my favourite pair of sass & bide jeans, a cute blazer and some of my favourite dresses by the designer, Nicholas. What would you say to young girls who are aspiring to be models? Do you consider yourself a positive role model for young girls? Yes, I’d like to be a positive role model for young girls. Modelling is a tough career to get into, but as long as you have a good family to keep you grounded it can be a very exciting and fun industry to work in. I think it’s important to stay true to yourself no matter what career you choose. It is possible to do modelling and study for a degree too; education has always been my priority and it is something you will have for life. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully owning my own pharmacy, who knows where - maybe in the Gold Coast or even one of the bigger cities! Hopefully I’ll also have a good portfolio showcasing some great modelling I’ve done along the way. What are you Coveting right now? I am coveting my favourite designers winter wardrobes for this season: Bec & Bridge, Maurie, Eve and Nicholas.

SASS & BIDE By Karli Emma Smith

Would you believe me if I were to say Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke of sass & bide had absolutely no fashion training before launching their iconic fashion label? No? I wouldn’t believe it either! This eclectic and trendy brand has strutted its way into the wardrobes of fashionista’s worldwide, and with the use of their signature embellishments, including but not limited to, seeds, teeth (no humans were harmed in the making), raffia, shells and metal; it’s easy to spot a sass & bide piece walking down the street. Clarke (sass) and Middleton (bide) first met each other in 1992 as high school students at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School in Brisbane, Queensland. Initially going their separate ways and following different career paths; Sarah-Jane studying to be an accountant and Heidi commencing studies in the Arts before becoming an art director, the talented pair

once again reunited and travelled to London in the late 1990s where the phenomenal sass & bide label was born. Sass & bide started out life as a modest stall in London’s Portobello Road Market. Motivated by their shared love of vintage clothing, the ladies sold retail purchased jeans to which they cut, modified and adapted to suit their own fashion personas. Upon returning to Australia, they developed an underground cult following, which essentially led to their first season collection being showcased at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week. In years to follow, the ladies showcased their work internationally at London Fashion Week, still the only Australian designers to exhibit there, and for eight consecutive seasons at New York Fashion Week. Through a very fortunate chance encounter while in New York, the ladies happened to 21

pass the set of Sex and the City *insert girlish screams here* where Sarah Jessica Parker was filming a scene. With some quick thinking on Sarah-Jane’s behalf, she handed over her self-designed jacket to a security guard, who would then pass it on to SJ Parker. This led to the pair designing a few one-off pieces to be worn on the show by Miss Carrie Bradshaw (Parker’s character). They have since designed a denim line for UK clothing store, Topshop , launched a oneoff charity event called Shine Initiative with Barnados, to benefit children of abuse, and in 2010 the designer pair were announced as the Australian winners of the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award. This year, sass & bide severed ties with long term investor David Jones and sold a share of their business to department store Myer for $42.25 million; allowing the company exclusive rights to expand the label throughout 30 stores across Australia. With the goal of stretching the brand as far as possible, sass & bide added to their long line of accessories - which already includes jewellery, belts, hats, lingerie and bags- by launching an eyewear range entitled ‘‘King of Plenty’’ in September last year. ‘’sass & bide eyewear is an evolution of the aesthetic that embodies our collections.... where strong lines collide with fine detailing; modern silhouettes compete with vintage inspirations....where memories of a past reconnect a tomorrow. ‘’- sass & bide ‘’King 22

Of Plenty’’ Eyewear press release. The range features ten different styles in various coloursfrom the classic to the statement; every frame has that distinguished sass & bide twist. ‘’Gun metal, rose gold & silver metals contrast the pop red, rust and orange hues and compliment the signature black, tort and leopard colourings. ‘’ - sass & bide ‘’King of Plenty’’ Eyewear press release. Other features include embossed metal braiding and rose gold chains, inner rim metal linings and laser cut trims. There’s a spin on the aviator style, which features metallic lenses, and echoed throughout the collection on each arm is a star, which correlates to a small star tattoo the designer duo both share. This feature is a symbolisation of their strong friendship and connection both in life and in business. The ‘’King of Plenty’’ eyewear range is available in sass & bide boutiques, concession stores in Myer and selected retailers nationally. And be sure to keep an eye out for their next Autumn/ Winter collection titled ‘’Seekerskate’’. The range includes oversized draping coats, asymmetrical cut dresses and tops, stripes and floral prints, sequined shorts, and bold primary colours like red and yellow, classic black and white, and metallic blue and shining gold. The brand is consistently going from strength to strength, and with no signs of slowing down in sight, the sky and beyond is the limit for Sarah- Jane and Heidi!

METALLICS, FUR AND LACE By Madeleine Babiolakis Covet journalist Madeleine Babiolakis speaks to Mossman head designer Cynthia Farchione about her own style and the inspiration behind the brand’s latest looks. What are some of Mossman’s key looks for the season? Mossman has focused on a few key trends including metallics, neon, knitwear and luxurious fabrics such as brocade, lace and fur. A piece in each of these categories will ensure you look sharp and on trend this winter. What are your favourite garments? I am a huge fan of bold, statement pieces teamed with great quality basics. Statement pieces can include garments with detailed prints and constructions, unusual silhouettes or killer accessories. Over the years 25

I’ve learnt buying pieces that I absolutely love rather than lots of mediocre pieces is the way to go. My favourite part is experimenting with statement pieces and creating different looks depending on the mood and occasion. What inspires you? I find reading blogs and seeing how ‘fashionistas’ from around the world dress from street style websites such as, The Sartorialist and Street Peeper, is great inspiration. What are some of the must-have pieces from your latest collection? Keep a look out for ‘The Aristocrat Dress’, which is made of luxurious gold and navy Elizabethan inspired fabric. If fur is your thing, there’s amazing multi-coloured and oversized sheep fur vests. This is in limited stock, so each piece is a bit different. I also love the lilac in the ‘Wooly Mammoth’ cardigan, which is made entirely of shaggy dreadlocked wool. Others to watch out for are the ‘Love Actually… Sucks’ pleated lace cardigan, the ‘Wind In The Willow Dress’, made entirely of laser cut leaf detail and finally the ‘Barbarella’ skirt made of faux metallic leather with side point studding detail. How would you describe the brand in three words. Why? Chic, distinctive and above all, addictive. Chic because Mossman strives to remain at the forefront of setting current fashion trends, distinctive because each and every garment is created using specialty fabric or detailed construction and finally, addictive, because once you buy your first piece you just can’t stop! What are you coveting? Absolutely any piece from the latest Christopher Kane Spring/Summer ’12 collection. I viewed some pieces from the range in New York and they were feminine, illuminating and devastatingly lovely. www.mossmanclothing.com.au

COURTNEY MILLS By Madeleine Babiolakis

Photography by APL Photography - www.aplphotography.com.au

30

What was it like for a young Miss Mills growing up? I grew up in Melbourne in a suburb with a bad reputation. I would like to think of myself as an exception to the bad town image - a good girl, from a bad town. I love my family, I have four brothers and two sisters. We are very close and that’s important in a big family. You have made a large impact on the Melbourne DJ scene in the last year, how long have you been DJing? My first gig was almost 3 years ago in the Red Room at Qbar. It was an awesome feeling and you could say, it was love at first sight. When did you decide that this was the career for you? I consider myself very lucky because it doesn’t feel like a job to me. I get to do something I love and that I’m good at. I look forward to playing each time and I love seeing the crowd’s reaction to each track I play. You recently got to play alongside one of your inspirations, Minx. What was that like and who is next on your list of idols to play alongside? It was amazing! We got along really well, we are quite similar. I have many artists on my wish list, so it’s hard to say. I got to play with The Potbelly’s a few weeks ago, that was awesome. If I had to pick one right now, Avicii would be on the top of my list - hopefully one day it’ll happen! Your striking looks behind the decks captivates both males and females. Do you have any aspirations in modeling? The thought has crossed my mind, if the right opportunity comes along then I would definitely explore it. I think the best way to live life is by making the most of the opportunities that come your way. What is your ultimate song to play, the one that always gets the crowd going? It would have to be Tom Evans’ Gotye bootleg of Avicci’s Levels. That gets the crowd going every single time!

How does it feel when you drop this song at a festival or a packed club? Can you try to describe this feeling to our readers? Honestly, words can’t describe how this feels – it’s the best feeling in the world! It is rumored that you don’t mind a little bit of a party, you must have some great stories to tell! Can you share one with us? Oh, I have so many! I love a good night out on the town with my ladies, I have a tendency to fall over and I always steal hats - so look out boys! Our male readers have been dying for me to ask: Is there a man in your life? Sorry to disappoint but yes, there is a man in my life. However, at this point of my life I am focusing on work and traveling. You have started producing your own music, which is a great achievement. If you could be locked in a studio with anyone in the world right now, who would it be? David Guetta is a star and I would love to work with him. He just seems to know exactly what his audience wants and gets the job done. To learn from him for a day would be amazing. When taking a break from the club scene, what is your favourite thing to do to unwind? I love the warm weather and going to the beach. One day I hope to be able to chase the sun around the world so I never have to be in the cold. I plan to introduce myself to Europe this summer; then I would love to explore the opportunities of the States. This is the plan, but if someone wanted to book me in Asia, I’d be there tomorrow. Where do you see your DJing career taking you in 5 years time? In five years I see myself living the dreamtraveling from Australian summers to European summers, with a place in Ibiza of course. A girl has got to dream big after all! What are you coveting right now? A villa on the island of Formentera (off Ibiza), and a little place in the South of France. My own private jet to fly me and my girls to all my gigs, and my family by my side.

EMMA Nota By MT Sagaria

What is your favourite thing about being a Channel 10 Traffic Reporter? .

So Emma, tell us a little bit about yourself? .

I’m an outgoing, passionate and determined individual. I wouldn’t survive without my family and friends. I love travel, fashion and keeping fit and I am not afraid of hard work. I think I get my strong work ethic from growing up in my Italian family. I am always up for a challenge. I’m a Melbourne girl through and through; I have travelled the world but I still believe that Melbourne is the most amazing city of all. 38

Flying over breathtaking Melbourne day in day out, there is nothing like watching the sunset from 3000 feet. It really is a dream gig. How did you land this amazing career?

.

The key to gaining any job in this industry is persistence. When one door closes, another one opens. I studied hard, worked my way into advertising, and then it was all about networking. It’s never easy putting yourself out there, but well worth it in the end. Ideally, what are your future ambitions?

afrancesco Wow, so many to mention. In a perfect world – my ideal job would be as a host on a show like Getaway. I love to travel, so any job that involved travelling would be perfect. Having said that, sport or fashion reporting would be something I’d work towards in the not-so-distant future. Anything I can sink my teeth into and to become known as a credible reporter would make me happy. You’re quite the fashionista, what are this season’s must haves? .

Anything leather is a must have – pants, cropped tee, cropped jacket, can’t go past a fur vest and never forget the statement ring to complete every outfit.

Who is your style icon?

.

Coco Chanel. She epitomises timeless styles, femininity, glamour and sophistication. She taught us that ‘every girl should be two things; classy and fabulous.’ What is something that not many people would know about you? .

Even though I’m a girly girl, I have a soft spot for motor sports, any sports really. Growing up with two older brothers may have something to do with that - I can be quite the tomboy. One of the regular things I enjoy doing with my family is to head up to 39

our property in northeast Victoria where we ride motorbikes, cook and pick olives. I love learning traditional hearty Italian recipes and I’m so grateful for our traditions. My wonderful Australian born mother is currently teaching me how to cook fabulous Italian classics, from homemade Ravioli to Osso Bucco. My mum is an amazing cook. I’m also tall. People are quite surprised when they meet me, as I am always sitting in the chopper they assume I am short! Word has it, you can be quite extravagant, what did you do to celebrate your 25th birthday? .

I guess every girl needs a bit of extravagance from time to time. If you can spoil yourself on your birthday, why not! I actually hired a plane and flew to a winery with 25 of my best friends, definitely a day I will never forget. What is the one thing you can’t leave the house without? .

My Chanel lip-gloss – I feel naked without it. If you could re-live one moment in your life, which one would it be? .

Take me back to high school, any day. I loved studying, extracurricular activities, surrounded by friends every day, carefree, no responsibilities…I’d go back tomorrow! What is your favourite Melbourne bar/club at the moment? .

Working the early mornings that I do, I really don’t have much energy to hit the town come the weekend. But if I had to choose, funky bars such as Fog or Baroq for a special occasion or if I have my dancing shoes on!

T e g an Gould BY Vanessa Testa

Tell us a bit about yourself, your background and your rise to fame? I am 27, down to earth and a fun loving Melbourne girl. Growing up I was an active child, I did calisthenics for around 10 years and was a competitive horse rider. I completed all my education in Melbourne and I had a successful career in the dental industry. I have a carefree personality and am always fond of a good time. I’m not shy and I pride myself with a bubbly and friendly attitude to life. Rise to Fame? I was thrust into the spotlight in 2011 as a result of my relationship, it certainly wasn’t planned. I really wouldn’t call it fame but a rise in opportunities that will possibly lead me in directions I may not have initially set out for. There has been heated speculation around your love life since becoming engaged to former football manager, Ricky Nixon. How do you handle the media attention given Nixon’s very public affair involving Kim Duthie, the ‘St Kilda Schoolgirl?’

I met Ricky in May, and whilst I knew who he was, I had no idea of the sort of attention he was receiving. We do not live in the past, we focus on the future and under our roof this issue is not discussed and a certain someone’s name has actually never been mentioned. I believe the whole “schoolgirl” situation was a total circus. No one wants to be associated with it - including me. I find it really annoying when people ask what I think of that person. All that drama occurred before I was in the picture, so as you can imagine, getting asked about it gets irritating. Every relationship has ups and downs and there have been reports you two have had some uphill battles, do you trust your fiancé Ricky Nixon? I’m still yet to come across anyone that has a ‘perfect’ relationship. It certainly puts a strain on things when everything we do is spread across the media, but once again, I am aware that this goes with the territory of my relationship in the spotlight. It 43

would be fair to say there have been some misunderstandings between us earlier on, but things that we have been able to work through which has only strengthened our relationship. Don’t get me wrong, there have been times where he’s been in the ‘doghouse,’ times where I’ve had enough of him. Having said that, I fully trust my fiancé; we wouldn’t be engaged if there were trust issues. Are you in love and is there a wedding on the horizon? Yeah, I love and adore Ricky and I can’t understand anyone who doubts it. There have always been plans for us to get married and this has never changed, we are enjoying being engaged for now. You attended the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Do you pride yourself on being a positive role model for young girls? How did you contribute to this event? I think anyone in the media spotlight should always be a positive role model. Growing up as a teenage girl was difficult, young girls put immense pressure on themselves to strive for so called ‘perfection’. I’ve been there and done that and it’s sad that we put ourselves through this pressure, there were days I just wanted to be one of the boys! Growing up I have always watched the Good Friday appeal and contributed with small donations. I think it’s a fantastic charity and is such a vital and important day for many families across Australia. Over the past several months I’ve had the pleasure of assisting with fundraising for a 15 year-old girl, Dakota Duke, who has suffered severe brain injury due to an accident in a girl’s football game. My manager Tania is in the process of organising a charity golf event to be held in Bendigo, Dakotas’ hometown, which I will be a part of. What’s your biggest achievement to date? An achievement I am most proud of would be having a successful career in dentistry. This has led me to work for some of Melbourne and Sydney’s top dental practices. 44

How did you get involved with Zoo Weekly? Is modelling something you’d like to pursue? I did some small modeling gigs when I was younger and it has always been something I wanted to pursue, but an education and career was always priority. Now that I have achieved both, I am certainly excited about furthering opportunities that may arise through modeling. What is your wardrobe must-have for this Autumn/Winter? 1. A pair of trusty skinny-leg jeans (black) 2. Blouses and shirts 3. Knits - the thicker the better, loose fit, I tend to favour the V-neck style 4. Good quality long tee shirts 5. A blazer, Peacoat (Black) and Parka Jacket (army Green) are a must for winter. 6. Ballet flats, boots with a mid-heel 7. Scarves - knitted, cotton, printed, block colours 8. Layering – lots of layers and be creative with colour! Who do you look to for inspiration when it comes to fashion? I am obsessed with 4 stars and their fashion trends: Kate Bosworth, Rachel Zoe, Ashley Olsen, Sienna Miller. What professional plans do you have brewing on the horizon? Professionally I would like to engage in more modeling with the chance of branching out into other media projects. I certainly have professional dreams and I can only hope it all falls into place. What are you Coveting right now? Driving an Aston Martin DB9 down to our new beach house, partner in the front and 2 dogs in the back. The house is on a huge block with great views – 10 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, cinema room, infinity pool, tennis courts and an amazing outdoor entertaining area. I’d love to share this with all of our closest friends for a weekend, letting all the stresses of the week fade away over fabulous food, great tunes and good weather. Absolute bliss!

The label offers a vast range of funky accessories, complimenting active people who wish to add a touch of glitz and glam to their workout. “I wished to create a fresh energising brand that would reach out to anyone who celebrates being fit and healthy. I live and breathe netball like many girls and I also love colour and individualised accessories when I train,” Explained Wall. Each personality has been factored in during the design process, 46

For those yearning to show their personality on the court, on the field or in the gym- can now do so by selecting from the vast range of bracelets, belts, clothing, finger sweats, arm sleeves and more. “I looked at other sports and drew inspiration from athletes I admired; I wanted to bring that individuality to netball through what the players wore. For instance, the neck-warmers worn by elite soccer players and finger-sweats worn by the likes of Kobe Bryant, USA basketball player- I wanted to bring that sense of individuality to the game,” Stated Sarah. Aside from designing Jeanieboy sportswear, the elite netballer turned entrepreneur has extended her vision to motivate young females to keep active.

Wall is giving back to the community by working alongside Victorian Police on a program called ‘Jeanieboy Dream Catchers Netball Academy.’ The program is designed to target less fortunate areas with the objective to inspire adolescent girls to stay fit, whilst having access to positive role models and mentors. “What inspired me to start Jeanieboy Dream Catchers Academy is my love for kids and promoting a feeling of empowerment to teens with a dream,” Expressed Wall. Wall’s grandmother, Jeanie, encouraged her dreams and aspirations, which have now been fed into the Jeanieboy label. Jeanieboy is constantly evolving, currently adding new colours and patterns to its netball-bibs. Jeanieboy sportswear can be viewed and purchased at www.Jeanieboy.com.au

F i r a s s Dirani By Vanessa Testa Rising Australian actor Firass Dirani spends a few minutes with Covet Editor, Vanessa Testa Have you always wanted to be an actor? You’ve been acting for a few years now and it’s safe to say your most popular role was playing John Ibrahim in Underbelly - how did this come about? Ever since I can remember I’ve always wanted to entertain people, to make them laugh or cry and to inspire and excite an audience. It’s a huge thrill and an adrenaline rush. You get addicted to it, so acting was a better choice for me then working behind a counter or an office. I was lucky I had this passion from early on and I knew what I wanted to do early in life. At the time of the Underbelly auditions, I had a film that was being released called The Combination. The producers had a look at it and called me in. I nailed all of the auditions and ended up getting the role. You’ve worked along side the likes of Robert DeNiro, Jason Statham and Clive Owen in the film Killer Elite - how did you keep your cool in their presence? Was it overwhelming? This took a lot of preparation as you are working with the best in the business. You need to be at your best possible game. I did find myself at times thinking to myself, “Wow, I’m with The Godfather baby”. Then you need to snap out of it, and be in the moment as best as you can. Sometimes it’s not about trying harder or giving more energy, but giving a craftier performance - it comes with time and experience. Also balancing the excitement and nerves was a real challenge, but a great learning experience. The best master class money can buy. 51

For a relatively young actor coming into the game, you were nominated for a Logie award in 2011 and actually won the Logie for Most Popular New Talent and the Graham Kennedy award for most outstanding new talent at the 2011 Logie Awards. How did this make you feel? It’s always flattering to be recognised for your work in front of your peers, but receiving accolades doesn’t mean the work will keep flowing in. You’ve got to keep working hard, knocking on doors and bettering yourself - because you are the product. You must keep surprising the audience with the projects you choose as well, otherwise you will become stale quickly. How did it feel to be named Cleo Bachelor of the Year in 2010? How did you get involved in this competition? I never knew I was entered into the competition until I made the top 50! There’s a lot of fun to be had in this industry and that’s just part of it. Yeah, girls pay a little bit more attention, but I don’t know if that’s the type of attention that I want. So, here’s the million-dollar question: Does Firass Dirani have a special lady in his life? At the moment there’s no special lady in my life. I’d love there to be, I love snuggling. It’s been reported that you’re quite the athlete - what do you do to stay in shape? What do you do for fun when you’re not learning a new script? I do a lot of boxing and running, I love being in the sun and the outdoors. Exercise makes me happy so I try to do a lot of it. When I’m not learning lines, I’m either out having fun with my friends or traveling. Traveling inspires me, so I love visiting places I haven’t yet explored. Learning about different cultures and tastes excites me. What is your wardrobe must-have for this Autumn/Winter? Black coat. Black boots. What’s on the horizon for you? You must have big plans after a couple of highly successful films? I have a film called Last Dance premiering at the Melbourne Film Festival mid-year. I’m also starting to develop my own ideas in film & television industries. It’s at infant stages, but still very exciting. What are you coveting right now? Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate! MARNI LITTLE BY Madeleine Babiolakis Despite a turbulent start to 2012, Marni Little says she couldn’t be happier. The blonde beauty speaks candidly to Covet journalist Madeleine Babiolakis about her love of basketball, scarves and fiancé, Dan Ewing. You’ve been engaged to Home and Away star Dan Ewing since September, how did he pop the question? We are both crazy basketball fans and we had tickets to the third Boomers game. Just before the game started, Dan called NBA player Patty Mills over and I remember being so excited to meet him. Then Patty helped him propose! It was amazing – a private engagement in front of 6000 people. What was going through your mind? I had no idea that Dan was going to propose. He’d chosen the ring and the way to do it all by himself! Before this, we were broken up for about five months and it was basically all or nothing, so I guess it was all! It was the best decision we have ever made. Can you spill anything on the wedding plans? Our wedding will be simple and family focused. Unfortunately Dan and I are too busy to plan it at the moment. I’d like my dress to be elegant, without all the bows and sparkles. I’m hoping when I see it, I’ll just know! You’ve been working in PR and events for some time now. Where do you see yourself in five years? I love my job! I’m about to launch a new division

of MWPR, and I couldn’t be more excited. Every day is different, depending on what client meetings or events I have on. In five years, I see myself helping to expand the firm; we have a lot of positive and exciting things to come. What is one product you can’t live without? How does it fit into your daily routine? BSC ready to drink protein shakes are absolutely to die for. There’s no such thing as a regular day for me, so it’s great for a quick breakfast or snack. I try to go to the gym five times a week, and see Dan’s family and my own family at least once a week. My days usually include a shake, gym, meeting and dinner while watching basketball. Tell us something the public wouldn’t know about you? Not many people would know that I had three lungs until I was eight years old. I had it removed after two weeks of illness, and I have a large scar across the right side of my back from the surgery. How would you describe your personal style? My personal style is not overly girly, it’s edgy and simple; I love street-wear. I’ll instinctively head towards brands like Nude Lucy or Lulu and Rose, as they match my style and the cut fits me well. What look are you coveting this Autumn/ Winter? I love scarves, thick knit brown and mauve cardigans and patterned tights. To avoid a fashion dilemma, I’ll wear boots and an oversized cardi. 59

A slice of Sicilian Orange with

Alessio Alia By Nesrene Barakat Tell us a bit about your childhood – what did you love to do and what did you dream of for the future? .

My dad had a bar, like a cafe bar, and I grew up watching him make coffees, but my dream was always to be a soccer player. In life, you never know what will happen and what’s around the corner though, so I ended up doing a lot of fashion work around the world. How have those experiences shaped you today? .

I was born in Albania but grew up in Italy, and I learnt a lot from the culture, the food and the fashion. It’s a culture that makes you learn things, even if you don’t mean to learn them! You have been involved in the international modelling industry for some time now. What prompted this shift into the restaurant business in Melbourne? .

Living by myself a lot of my life, I learnt to cook properly, like the traditional way. One day, I was walking down the street and I saw this restaurant and I decided to get it. Melbourne just reminds me of Europe. I think for me, when I travelled for my work, it was one of the best cities that I felt I could consider home. I go back to Italy and Albania twice a year, to visit family and friends, but I’ve lived in Australia for twelve years and Melbourne for five and it feels like home now. I’m an Aussie! 69

How did you decide on the name “Sicilian Orange”? .

Actually, it was already called that before. It was created by a Sicilian family and the mother still works for me. I really liked the name because the name “Sicily” reminded me of back home.

can taste the flavours. For example, if you are making a “pomodore” sauce, you should taste the tomato flavours. Don’t mix too many things in with it, simple is the best. If you had to choose one last meal, what would it be? .

I love Sicily and I go there every year because I have a lot of friends there. Sicily is very famous for blood oranges in its culture and history and I thought that the name was something different and I wanted to keep it. It’s also how I wanted the restaurant to feel, like it’s cosy and traditional, like Europe. Who would be your ideal target clientele? .

I get a lot of the locals during the day time, but I also get a lot of people from the fashion and nightclub industries, particularly with Boutique just across the road. I met a lot of celebrities in the fashion industry and they are now my friends and customers, but I respect everyone and want everyone to feel welcome. Obviously your inspiration for the menu came from your Italian background. What sorts of dishes were your favourites when you were growing up? How has this evolved in your adulthood?

Honestly, I think it would be my favourite dish my mum used to cook when I was a kid. It used to be beans and rice! It would have to be the last thing because it would remind me of her. Who is the most inspirational person in your life? .

My sister has always been there for me. I also value old and new friends who have been there for me in my life. Anyone who has supported me throughout my life and been loyal in some way. Those are the people that will be by your side forever. What are your future aspirations for career and family? .

Australia is definitely my home, but I also have a lot of things happening in the future in Albania. I’m still involved in the fashion, TV and music industries, which are part of my plans for the next five years.

.

I used to love lasagne! When I was a kid, I used to always want lasagne and always asked for it. Now, I love meat. Red meat, particularly steak. Do you consider yourself a good cook? What would be your signature dish if you were cooking at home? .

When I was growing up, I used to see people cook and I would always watch and try to steal ideas. I know what’s good and I know how to cook really well. My signature food would be pasta, any kind. If I have any ingredients in front of me, I can invent something and I promise you will like it! What would be the greatest cooking tip you could share with us? .

The best tip for pasta is not to overcook it it should be “al dente”. If you are making a sauce, it should be really simple so that you 70

The restaurant keeps me sane and gives me something to do during the day time, but fashion has been a big part of my life and it’s something I love and I’m good at. Although, if I could, I’d go back and be a goal keeper like I used to be and always dreamed of! However, sometimes dreams are not enough and you need to choose which path to follow for life to move ahead. We all crave things we know we shouldn’t have. What are you coveting right now? .

Everything that you’re not meant to have, tastes better than everything else! If you tell someone not to have something, they want it more, and I’m the same, no matter what it might be!

Pierre Winter By Catherine Ciccone

Tell us about the new labels currently stocked in your boutique in Paddington. Which are your favourites? They are all personal favourites. Oscar de la Renta is a living legend in fashion. At the same time we stock Alexis Bittar who is a relatively ‘new’ designer compared to Oscar de la Renta. Alexis is one of the more important names in jewellery design. The museums in America are now showing a collection of his pieces, this is a designer we will hear a lot about in the future. The current labels in store are Alexis Bittar, which we have stocked for few years now and we are very proud to represent Oscar de la Renta as the only stockist in Australia. 76

Other designers are Badgley Mischka, Kara Ross, Anton Heunis, Bounkit and more. A new comer this season is DUCHESSA a small producer with a great range of what I call the Anna Wintour necklaces, without the price tag! A must-have for next season. Stack them up and clash colours, they’re a great look for casual or evening. This season we are negotiating with a number of designers. They all have two things in common: individuality and their own language, if you like. Equally important is how the pieces are actually produced, as they need to have a certain quality and finish. Many of the pieces found at Pierre Winter are exclusive to your boutique. How

Winter important is it to you to stock one-off, unique pieces? We don’t buy multiple pieces as we represent a number of designers and have limited space; the idea is to find something special in the store here and now and never to be back in stock again. Some pieces don’t last long in the store as the jewellery we bring into the country is often purchased online from overseas buyers. These brands sell out fast in America and Europe and are in high demand. The same applies to our fine jewellery and commission pieces, which are always one off pieces and exclusive to our clients’ specifications and needs. Most of the brands are exclusive to this store, such as Badgley Mishka and Oscar de la Renta. We introduced both these brands to the Australian

market. Even though they can be purchased online, I think to feel and touch jewellery and try them on and see the proportion is important. We try to introduce new and exciting labels to the Australian market and jewellery for the more confident wearer. For a person who is used to wearing jewellery whether it is fine or costume jewellery, mix it all up! As Daphne Guiness said, ‘It doesn’t have to be real!’ We are all born as originals. Why dress as a copy? Do your own thing and what you feel is right. It’s very simple. What advice can you give readers about accessorising their outfits for day and night? I only have one thing to say here to be 77

honest, and that is not to let the pieces wear you. This happens a lot for some reason. Don’t let fashion or jewellery wear you, it should be the other way around. What amuses me sometimes is that jewellery, for a lot of people, takes a lot of consideration whereas fashion doesn’t. You change your bag, your outfit or your shoes every day, so why wouldn’t you change your jewellery? Fine jewellery or costume jewellery, just mix up the pieces. It’s not a lifetime contract, so don’t be afraid to wear it. Jewellery will fix any outfit- place some in your bag if you are off to a function after work or a party. Jewellery is in the eye of the person next to you, they will not see your outfit as much as they will see your jewellery. Wear coloured stones for the day, diamonds are meant to be worn after 6pm cocktail hour! Gold suits most people and it’s gentler to your skin. Again costume jewellery is affordable and you can achieve any look, or let the jewellery reflect your mood or the occasion. What are the main accessory trends that you’ve noticed? This season there is a lot of colour. A trend that is looking more to a 1940’s, 1950’s update. So, choose classic types of jewellery and lots of clashing colours. We are moving away from silvers, black, hard and edgy looks, which are from last season or the season before. The current trends are an update, so they’re not a copy of 40’s and 50’s jewellery but more of an inspiration from that style. The forecast is luxury and the next trend after that will most certainly go to a new minimalism. There will always be a classic feel about jewellery. Next winter will show a fusion of 40’s and 80’s. BIG pieces are here to stay. In your view, which celebrities wear jewellery particularly well? There are quite a few women and men as well. Paloma Picasso, who makes jewellery obviously, but she tends to get the right balance and overload in the right way. Daphne Guiness, the late Duchess of Windsor, Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour. Anyone that is willing to go their own way and adapt a style rather than a trend. I find most celebrities don’t have a particular style. Anna dello Russo, Editor of Vogue in Japan, is also someone I find interesting. What do you COVET? I just saw the latest Thom Brown and Tom Ford collection. My must for the month! VERDURA jeweller is one of my favourites, when it comes to fine jewellers. I can’t wait for the new Oscar de la Renta home wares. Yes, we will stock ODLR HOME when launched! Pierre Winter Fine Jewels is located on 78 William Street, Paddington, NSW. For all stockist enquiries, please contact: (02) 9331 2760. 78

Roxy Jacenko By Catherine Ciccone

Congratulations on your fabulous new book, ‘Strictly Confidential: A Jazzy Lou Novel’! What inspired you to write your own novel? Is this something you’ve always been interested in doing? I guess PR is a world that people are SO inquisitive about and don’t really know what its all about, so the book really tells it like it is! There were never any plans to do a book but I did always think that my job was a book in the making, so when we were approached by Allen & Unwin, I jumped at the opportunity! How long did it take to pen the book? The whole process took about a year and a half, I would never have imagined how long & what goes into a book! Are there any authors whose writing in particular that you admire? Why?

Everything from the titles to the covers to the content is just fabulous, I find her books ‘cant put it down’ kind of stuff! You started Sweaty Betty PR at the age of 24. Can you tell readers a little bit about your career? I started my career as the receptionist at Diesel and fortunately had the opportunity to work my way through the business and learn various aspects. In my last 6 months of working with Diesel I was given the role of PR & Marketing manager and it just went from there. I had really found my niche and loved the role. It was a learn-by-your-mistake kind of role, as I didn’t have any formal training under my belt just a serious hunger to succeed. After 4 years of being at Diesel and 6 months in the PR role, I quit and moved on to start Sweaty Betty PR and here we are 8 years on!

I love Lauren Weisberger – she is a genius. 87

Any career advice for young women? Don’t clock watch, work hard, put your hand up for everything and anything and don’t worry about failing - you can always pick yourself up and try again. What has been your proudest professional moment? Everyday really – I don’t look at any elements and go wow this is it. Everyday is a new challenge and a new opportunity. I am grabbing each and running with it! You and your fiancé have become parents to an adorable baby girl, Pixie-Rose. How do you balance such a fast-paced career with motherhood? I guess not thinking about how to balance it – just doing it. I think the more you think about how to do something the harder it is to make it work. Pixie-Rose is a jewel and is so quiet and cute and just loves being out and about, so she has really been a gorgeous and fulfilling addition to our life. It’s wonderful to have a new and little family! What are five beauty essentials that you cannot live without? Face of Australia Illuminator, SAX Cosmetics Liquid Eyeliner, Schwarzkopf Instant Volume Powder, 1000 Hour Nail Foils in Silver, Ciccone Lipstick in Oceanus What are your wardrobe staples? Chanel jackets, Ksubi denim shorts, Oliver Peoples aviator sunglasses and a Hermès Birkin bag! Any big plans for 2012? I’m getting married in March and celebrating Pixie’s 1st birthday. Now that will be one VERY exciting soiree to plan! What are you coveting right now? The Hermès Collier de Chien bracelet in sterling silver. 88

The Evolution of Melbourne's Fashion Scene By Melinda Pane Hard to imagine now, but there was a time when purchasing a new outfit meant gathering the girls and spending a day (or five – there’s always one who tries on EVERYTHING) trawling boutiques and stores to find the perfect outfit for a night out or a big event. Now, we simply forward on an email with fashion fuelled links that transports us into the showrooms of hundreds of designers with the click of a mouse whilst drinking our morning coffee and all before checking our emails. Melbourne is home to many local designers and in many circles is recognised as the epicentre of Australian fashion. This is largely because the fashion conscience need not subscribe to any one style. The ‘Melbourne look’ encompasses a culturally diverse set of looks. I’ve pondered how best to describe this look for some time. So what is ‘the Melbourne look’? It’s asymmetric, it’s elegant, it’s the hipsters wearing hipsters, it’s vintage-inspired, it’s funk-goth meets punk glamour, it’s thrift-shop treasures teamed with a one-months-rent staple item from the ‘Parisend’ of Collins Street that goes with everything (or you’ll make it go with everything for that price!). It caters to a multitude of cultures and has a place and identity for all. Melbourne’s look is a blend of so many different cultures and personality types. Looking back Melbournian’s use of fashion as a means to express themselves and their mood is as a result of the many different nationalities that came to our shores all those years ago and set up shop Being revered as one of the most fashionforward 94

destinations was no easy feat. So how did we get here? The humble roots of Melbourne’s rag trade started with bespoke tailors opening around Melbourne that were owned and run by immigrants as a way of making end meet. This is one of the reasons we are known today as Australia’s birth place of fashion and trends. Bourke Street, Melbourne is rife with first and second generation tailors and is a great juxtaposition to the mainstream franchises we see popping up in Shopping Centers. Culturally, bespoke fashion and trends are the foundations upon which Melbourne’s fashion history are founded. Italian tailors and Asian heritage seamstresses established themselves in Melbourne as a way to earn a simple living but what they didn’t realise if that they were shaping the future of fashion. Today, Fashion has evolved through many avenues – increased awareness, technology, desire – and with technology at the forefront our lives, fashion has gone the way of MasterChef with dedicated shows on fashion and modelling on every lifestyle channel. The consumer has more control and choice than ever before. Designers have been catapulted to the status of ‘celebrity’ with a large percentage of the audience hanging onto their every word. As a result of this, trends don’t evolve as organically as they used to. We are fed trends through television and celebrities, which more often than can be driven by economical or commercial gain disguised at trends.

95

Melbourne’s fashion culture is an attitude; it knows that there is more to fashion than clothing and more to trends than that latest mass-produced item. Experienced Fashion Stylist, Virginia Dowzer, a lady who has seen her fair share of trends and experienced the evolution of Melbourne’s fashion scene first-hand said, “I know I’m onto a trend when I see it. It’s instant. If I had to think about the trend then it probably would already be over”. I find that Melbourne designers, stylists, decision makers and consumers drive their own trends but I can’t deny the influence that conglomerates Top Shop and Zara have in fast-tracking trends, force-feeding it to the masses and winning the game by making it affordable. The recent financial crisis forced us all to be thriftier and re-invent outfits. This caused the consumer to have to think twice before making a purchase and as a result, designers lost a significant amount of control. The emergence of these large mainstream chain stores has put the consumer in the driving seat with many Australian designers facing extinction with the dinosaurs. One only has to walk the streets of Melbourne to agree that our fashion scene is a mixed bag of lollies. We don’t conform to the hype and we don’t have a norm. We are a culmination of different styles and genre who all dress to dress to a different drum beat. Personally, my money is on the home-grown Australian designers - Jayson Brundson, Sass and Bide, Satch, Lisa Ho, Allanah Hill, Toni Matičevski, Josh Goot - to lead the way for Melbourne’s fashion future, until then however, you’ll find me secretly shopping Asos online while I wait for my morning coffee. 96
