Spring has always been about starting fresh. We shed our black blazers and boots in favour of pretty pastels, swap cosy nights on the couch for walks in leafy parks and schedule in a Sunday for heavy-duty spring cleaning.

So, in true spirit, COVET is doing a little spring cleaning of it’s own. As your new Editor-in-Chief, I will continue to bring you the things you love about COVET – like beauty, fitness, entertainment and lifestyle, celebrity, and our men’s section – with a big focus on the best fashion on our radar and a little light reading to keep you on your toes.

Having wrapped up my favourite time of the year just in time for this issue (Melbourne Spring Fashion Week for those who didn’t have your coffee this morning), you can expect to feel like you were front row with our coverage of trends, designer reviews and official photos from APL Photography. al & a Q. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BE A DESIGNER? WAS IT SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED?

Honestly, I never thought I!d have the guts to start my own label or be a designer till I returned home from New York.

All I knew was that I loved to sketch and make clothes and all the elements that came with that since I was a kid.

Q. IF THERE WERE ONE THING YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Nothing! As cynical, political and b*tchy (am I allowed to say this? Haha..) as this industry can get, it is the most fascinating and a competitive one too. It changes every day and we are exposed to so many things, whether we are a consumer, a designer or a retailer.

Q. WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK AS A DESIGNER? Friendships, relationships, music, art, movies and street culture. I!m mostly inspired by what I see and experience around me and thoughts start to develop off an idea, an image, a conversation or a story.

Q. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM PROJECT? To collaborate with all the fine artists and designers out there, bringing fashion to a new level of experience for the community.

Q. IF YOU COULD DRESS ANY ONE CELEBRITY, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE? I!ve always found Dakota Fanning intriguing.

Q. DESCRIBE YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON THE ART OF FASHION? The idea that fashion is an art depends on the eye of the beholder. I!ve always believed that fashion inspires the people on the streets and similarly, the people on the streets inspire fashion. It is a continual cycle and I design based on street art, culture, music and the relationships and people around me.

Q. WHICH ONE OF YOUR PIECES ARE YOU MOST FOND OF? That would have to be the blazers and the shirts.

Q. WHICH DESIGNERS DO YOU LOOK UP TO? I love the works and thoughts of Richard Chai and Alexander Wang. But I really admire designers who impresses with both their designs and the creative ideas and marketing efforts behind it. One of them would be the team behind local label, Sifr.

Q. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR LATEST COLLECTION?

.02 Collection titled In Love With A Girl stemmed from the relationship between two best friends. That intimate relationship between friends that most people experienced in their lifetime. A best friend that we can always count on, laugh and cry with. They share unspoken words but connected thoughts; this led to the creation of a happy palette filled with muted colors and bright floral prints, coupled with casual, simple silhouettes, made just for them.

Q. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING COLLECTION? Expect a little bit of flirty, cheeky and sassy in it. It!s going to be the best one yet.

Q. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST ENRICHING EXPERIENCE IN FASHION SO FAR? Taking the risk of starting AL&ALICIA. I didn!t know what to expect and I was nervous. But I have really learnt a lot through this journey, and I still am. The support and the people I!ve met have given me the most enriching experience, advice and friendships.

Q. AL&ALICIA DESIGNS ARE EXTREMELY BOYISH BUT THEY ARE STILL GIRLY, THEY!RE A TAD PREPPY BUT NOT OVER-THE-TOP. IS THAT A RELFECTION OF YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? The designs might have started out as an expression of my ideas or style but when we start styling them on the models, pairing or mixing them up, the end result often evolves differently. I don!t really like to think of the label as a reflection of my personal style because I believe everyone carries a different style even if they are wearing the same exact outfit. It!s your personality and individuality that brings forth that style.

Q. IF YOU COULD BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN A FASHION DESIGNER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? A chef! I would like to have a little cafĂŠ of my own!

Q. ANY PARTING WORDS OF ADVICE FOR FUTURE DESIGNERS? Always love what you do and be humble.

A

s the audience sat anxiously waiting to see what fashion’s bright future had to offer, one designer took us back, giving the beauty of the past a gorgeous modern look. As MSFW came to a wrap, a selected number of RMIT students showcased their 4th year collections – a standout amongst the fresh new talent, Kate Bolzonello.

The collection touched upon a reference of Victorian Dolls, with quilted caged skirts and voluptuous shaping over sheer mesh transparencies. The pieces were proportionally challenging, stamping Kate’s signature on each look.

It was obvious as each model emerged that Kate Bolzonello’s pieces are fresh, bold and daring, giving the new designer a lot to be excited about.

Q. What was the inspiration behind your collection?

Photographer Sarah Moon was the initial inspiration – her narrative like images create unease and uncertainty, a quality which draws in the attention of the viewer as they try to match the story to the image.

From looking at her photographs, I started looking at images of clouds, which share similar qualities to her images. Conflicting elements which again create a sense of uncertainty, ominous, dark and heavy, yet light wispy and ephemeral.

Q. What so you think is the biggest trend of the season?

The idea of transeasonal looks as well as longer silhouettes and structured looks. The season shows a lot of diversity.

Q. Who do you most admire in the fashion industry and would like to design for?

As far as a designer, I am most inspired by the works of Miuccia Prada – her unique style, creating her own unique looks every season. I also love Mary-Kate Olsen’s style and her ability to create looks that are not boxed in but are completely her own.

Q. What made you want to be a designer?

I always found it difficult to shop for myself, I had different looks in mind but none of them resembled those in the stores, so I decided to begin creating them myself. Being a designer allows me to have my own vision about fashion.

Q. After the success of MSFW, what is the next step?

After graduating from RMIT, I would love to travel Europe, explore and be inspired. Ideally I would love to do an internship at PRADA and take the next step from there.

howcasing her current collection at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week was Melbourne-based designer Dhini.

Displaying a divine parade of garments inspired by the Indian and Persian roots of the Mughal Empire, each piece demonstrated the impeccable detailing Dhini has become known for.

The spring/summer 10/11 collection is a breathtaking blend of history with a contemporary twist. Inspired by a recent trip to India and a particular interest in the Mughal Period, the “Mughal Empress” collection incorporates the most distinct features of architecture, art, culture and style of clothing of its namesake era.

The patterns are reminiscent of those found in 16th Century Indian architecture and reflect the Persian roots of the Mughal Empire, which were brought to life by 3D-engineered digital printing. According to Dhini, the response has been phenomenal.

In the past Dhini’s collections have been dominated by darker hues, but she insists “every season [she] changes it up”. Several gorgeous colours have been chosen to feature in the “Mughal Empress” collection, inspired by the marble and semi-precious stones seen at Indian architectural landmarks such as the Taj Mahal. Hues such as Blush, Marble, Sapphire blue and Catering to a youthful as well as mature age demographic, the design aesthetic is sophisticated with a modern edge. “[The] signature stuff is experimental tailoring contrasted with draping and focused on detail,” Dhini tells COVET. Designed specifically to flatter the female form, each garment is proportioned beautifully so that women of varying sizes can look great in a Dhini. Keeping versatility in mind and Dhini’s love of “designing a collection with a range of everything”, “Mughal Empress” has just that.

Firstly, the collection features a stunning range of frocks. The striking “Mumtaz Dress” in Blush shows off ruched detailing and a silver zip to give a feminine yet edgy look. There are also several styles of pant, including the Sarong Pant which is a relaxed fit, with gathered detail at the bottom and a draped sarong built into the waist of the pant. Known for her signature jackets, The Sari Jacket in black has pleating detail which incorporates a wrapping effect giving the jacket a stunning feature on the back. Dhini also presents a range of silk blouses and skirts all of which are pleated and draped to create a soft and feminine look. But this seasons must-haves according to Dhini?

“Definitely the Jali leggings – they’re going to be huge and hot. [Also], the Jali Empress Dress and Dhini signature jacket, such as the Chajja jacket.

With the Spring Racing Carnival coming up, Dhini gives ladies some advice about dressing for the Races.

“A dress should be classic and elegant but should reflect something about the future, using modern techniques such as laser cutting and digital printing. Futuristic techniques and technology combined with classic silhouettes.”

With a background in marketing, Dhini later set her sights on a fashion career and obtained a Certificate in Fashion in Tokyo and a BA in Fashion at RMIT. She launched her own collection at London Fashion Week in 2005 before returning home to Melbourne to present her first Australian show to critical acclaim.

She currently has plans to launch her label internationally within the next year. With her new collection on the racks, it’s not hard to see why Dhini is fast becoming one of Australia’s next biggest exports.

esigner collaborations: we all love them, and we’ve all been that girl – face hard-pressed against the glass, oblivious to the hundreds of people behind us, pushing and elbowing our way to the front. Something just takes over.

Zac Posen for Target? OMG. Stella McCartney for Adidas? Oh no she didn’t! Matthew Williamson for H&M? Stop right there…

I think I might faint.

On the surface, it appears that we, the consumer, have been experiencing a succession of retail miracles. Glorious happenings, which are seemingly kind gestures from high-end designers who want to afford every Tom, Dick and Harry a piece of their highly coveted collection. And seemingly, the giant mega-chain stores actually care about quality over quantity.

Designer collaborations? God bless!

But underneath the surface it’s a different story. High profile, limited-edition collaborations between budget-friendly retailers and ultra-chic fashion designers are not retail miracles. And they’re certainly not kind gestures from high-end designers.

Instead, it’s a marketing ploy used to draw middle to lower class consumers into big-box stores.

“Today’s retail landscape is a really cluttered environment. It can help to tag yourself to a brand that’s pertinent to the desired audience,” says Gloria Park Bartolone, Vice President of the retail group at market researcher Maritz.

Bartolone explains that by aligning themselves with wellestablished and typically unattainable designers, mega-chain stores are ‘borrowing’ a more desirable brand identity from a more likable and popular designer. But who would actually fall for this sham? As it turns out, millions of people.

Let’s look at Topshop. In the 90’s, Topshop was perceived to be hideously unfashionable. At best, a fashion-savvy consumer might visit the store (disguised under a trench coat, oversized sunglasses and a silk head scarf) to purchase cheap, basic clothing items. Now, Topshop is one of the biggest players in the chain store field by providing consumers with a new affordable and trendy selection of fashion, and limited-edition designer collections. This new approach has awarded the company a regular show at London Fashion Week – the only brand of its calibre to do so. But the decision to bring in a high profile designer was no fleeting idea, nor was it just a marketing ploy to increase margins. What Kate Moss brought to Topshop changed the game forever.

Being one of the more controversial models, Moss’s unusual beauty, waif figure and her drug-infused partying antics with high-profile celebrities made her a household name. But it was her 2005 cocaine scandal that brought her world crashing down – she was dropped from many of her lucrative endorsement deals including H&M, Chanel and Burberry. For most companies, Moss’s scandal posed a serious threat to their brand. For Topshop, it presented an opportunity to step back into the limelight with a new energy. So in 2007, Topshop approached Moss with an offer that was too good to refuse – a limited edition collection of her very own. The pay-off for Topshop? An instantaneous brand facelift. Quickly, the chain store was synonymous with Kate Moss connotations – cool, edgy and fashionable. Topshop were charging more than a 400% markup on product. In terms of ROI, it was an epic success. And it didn’t end there: Topshop rode the reinvention wave to impressive measures. London’s Oxford Street store now features personal shoppers, a nail bar, a one-hour tailoring service, a hair salon (by famed catwalk hairdresser Daniel Hersheson), and a one-hour delivery service whereby customers can place an order to the store and their products will be delivered by a Vespa scooter.

It took two decades and one smart collaboration to turn Topshop from passé chain store to fashion powerhouse. Marketing ploy? Perhaps.

Collaboration at its best? No doubt.

Designer collaborations now extend much further than chain stores. We also have a suite of haute couture designers joining forces with brands to offer products strangely unrelated to fashion. In 2009, Karl Lagerfeld joined forces with Jérôme Coste, the Creative Director behind Parisian high-end helmet label Les Ateliers Ruby to release a line of coveted helmets with built-in iPods. These little gems sold for around $1,800 a pop. Victoria Beckham being named as Creative Design Assistant for Range Rover is just another of the unusual couples; her coy reaction when asked about plans for the motor vehicle juggernaut doesn’t place all that much confidence in their decision: “I don’t know where to start” admitted Beckham to the press.

Generally, collaborations produce an interesting outcome. When two creative entities combine their seemingly opposing styles the result is often greater than the sum of its parts. But at the same time, these days, it seems as though designer collaborations are fashion’s ‘new black’. Whether it’s a marketing tactic or bodacious attempt to push the envelope, it’s becoming a rather generic and less than original brand-building strategy.

Look out for Target’s next collaboration with handbag giant Mulberry (due in stores October 10) and Sportsgirl’s latest partnerships with Konstantina Mittas and Jessie Hill.

H

i Ms. Peck, how are you? You have been keeping busy in recent months, with MSFW, and of course being one of our gorgeous cover girls for Issue 4. How do you handle your busy schedule?

Well yes, it has been a busy trip home! My schedule has a habit of getting me into all kinds of strife but down under it is mostly managed by the lovely ladies, Katie and Tina, at Giant model management, and Priscilla’s in Sydney. I knew that commission was going somewhere! My mother also likes to lend a helping hand.

But you know what they say, ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ (I am often referred to as broth) Are you originally from Melbourne?

Incorrect. I was born in Jasper Canada, my father then flew my mother and I (age 2) in his wee little airplane to Cairns in North Queensland. I spent most of time under water with the fishie’s until I was relocated to Melbourne age 6.

How did you get into modelling? Was it something you considered pursuing, or were you approached?

My high school friends took me along to the auditions for ‘Search for a Supermodel’ Television Series, and hey presto it all went from there. I had such a ball on the show, it was nothing like ‘Next top model’, we were all a lot more innocent. I have NEVER had to work with giant insects crawling on my body!

Modelling has opened up such fantastic opportunities, so much travel, introduced me to the wildest peeps all over the world... I don’t regret a day of not using my brain! (joke) Honestly, I could never of had these crazy experiences working in a office, so long as I can keep one hand out of the cookie jar I think I’ll be right to have many more wonderful times!

Fashion highlight of 2010 so far?

Returning to Australia and not yet witnessing one up-turned collar.

Fashion lowlight of 2010 so far?

We all know what I’m going to say! Alexander McQueen’s death…

That was pretty devastating for the industry. I was working with the label Lanvin in NYC at the time it happened, I had TWO interns crying in my lap (and one waiting in line). He really was such an incredible genius.

If you could fast forward to ten years from now, what do you predict for yourself?

In actual fact I am about to embark on a two-month motorcycle trip to South Africa as the ambassador for Y-Gap (Y Generation against poverty). Also supporting the trip will be Draggin’ Jeans (A fashion motorcycle gear brand) and Instant Rockstar hair products. Here I will be visiting potential projects for development and keeping an active blog. If I can somehow incorporate raising awareness for community development in third and second world country WITH my travel bug AND be able to bring home the bacon THEN that’s where I might be in 10 years time!

KinFolk café near the corner of Swanston and Bourke St. It is absolutely rammed at lunch, and the menu is healthy and light. Awesome muesli, and all the people working there are volunteer’s!

Personally I’m surprised they even turn up for the 7AM coffee zombies but all proceeds are redirected for charity and community projects internationally, so good on them!

Brunswick Street, holy moly, there is everything anybody’s heart desires. The only problem is it’s on the other side of the bridge and us St.Kilda/Pharan people don’t tend to get that far!

What do you currently CRAVE, DESIRE, and INDULGE in?

CRAVE - ALL I want RIGHT NOW is a buttery Chardonnay from California. Give me some Oak people! As wonderful as our Aussie wines are, I just need a doctor’s dose of Californian butter.

DESIRE – Clip off high heels. A wonderful idea if I do say so myself…

You just clip on the heel and I’m ready for a casting!

INDULGE – Far too much time in the shower. I do feel rather terrible when I’m in there without a water saving nozzle shooting a water thread at my back…So I apologise in advance Mother Earth, although you could say I chopped off my hair to minimize hair washing time!

1. Lip Balm (ladies we all know it) 2. Breakfast cereal (Good at all times all the day and night, no matter what state your in) 3. My little red Italian stallion of a scooter, I REFUSE to pay for public transport in this city major rip off and Myki sucks.

What are your favourite designers and brands?

Vouching for my always favourite Melbourne peeps I would have to say T.L.Wood, Scanlan and Theodore(Melbourne based I think), Arabella Ramsay… I have been doing their shows for yonks and they never cease to amaze.

Who is your model inspiration?

Naomi Campbell. If only I had an assistant to throw a phone at! Or dodgy diamonds to trade with.

If you weren’t modelling, you would be...

I would be about to take of on a ‘model gone mental’ motorbike trip to South Africa! My mother has decided I have officially lost the plot.

Between DIY safari and wineries I will be squeezing in some much needed ‘giving’ for Y-Gap, I am all too aware of the slightly hedonistic life I have been leading and it’s probably about time to lend my time. With the support of brands such as Draggin’ Jeans and Instant Rockstar I think I might be able to give the whole ‘giving’ thing a good go!

You have amazing hair. Are you a natural blonde?

Once upon a merry time it was this blonde! Back when I was miniature me but now due to forces of (fashion) nature I have been bleached and chopped by many a hairdresser. It’s mousey brown to answer your question! Thanks to Rokk Ebony, as a blonde head of hair this colour, is a hard nut to crack!

Highlights of your career so far?

Working with designer in New York for brands such as Lanvin, Alexander Wang, Halston. Other highlights include working in Japan where I would be whisked off to shoot in the oddest locations, beautiful hotels, beaches, castles, temples, shopping centres often surrounded by farm animals, snakes, horses all while being dressed in Christian Dior sitting in a bucket of mud. It was a real eye opener to other people’s opinion of what looks fashionable!

How do you maintain your model looks?

Genetics plays a pretty part (thanks mummy darling), a healthy diet, a good hairdresser, dash of exercise and a straight and level noggin on your neck. There is nothing worse than taking it too seriously.

Describe your style: How can I be safe on a motorcycle and make it to a modeling audition?

With a lot of denim and leather! Now I can actually look decent in Draggin’ Jeans instead of a half ass’d bikey! But leather, yes, with or without a bike we should all be wearing it! Head to toe! What a damn fine nation we would be.

Complete this sentence: Modelling is... whatever you want it to be. I hope I am using it to my advantage at this stage.

Sometimes though, we forget about the benefits for our hair and face during the hotter half of the year As those warmer months slowly approach, it seems only fair we prepare you for the balmy days and nights that await you the best way we know how – by showcasing the biggest trends you’ll be coveting from the neck up.

Designers like Gucci and Chloe revealed that for their S/ S season, they would go for an effortless look, saving you time and letting you concentrate on your wardrobe.

The emphasis was on a more natural look – highlighted cheekbones, neutral tones and soft kissable lips. The soft wavy hair reminds us what spring and summer are all about – being yourself and exuding the natural beauty of a woman.

Chanel chose to follow Gucci and Chloe with the understated look, with a scarf added for effect. Silk is the one item you should have in your wardrobe, even if you only wear it on your head. Twist into a turban on the front of your forehead, tie in a knot near your ear or rock a casual headscarf on bad hair days Versace used just a hint of soft colour against pale, natural bases, minimal blush or bronzing and clean lips that gives light and radiance to the wearer.

Let there be PURPLE! This coming S/S, the one must have – and we mean must have – is something purple. Now it doesn’t matter whether it’s nail polish, eye shadow or even a bra, so long as it’s purple you’re hanging with the In Crowd.

For S/S 10/11, most designers have opted to go for a light touch of lavender, violet or simple purple, but there’s nothing simple about these colours.

Dior showed how lips should be plumped up like plums and eyes stand out, while Preen showed delicate lavender eyes that induce visions of spring (yay!)

Peter Som’s looks were bold and sultry with shades of grape and wine.

I use it lightly everyday for a healthy, sun-kissed glow or add a little more for a night out. A little goes a long way too – one pot has lasted over two years!

The mineral components mean it is free from talc and other harmful ingredients responsible for clogged pores and breakouts.

magine the horror – it’s Derby Day, 1965 and 22-year-old supermodel Jean Shrimpton has arrived in the first ever mini dress. It’s a modest shift with a hem just above the knee and it caused a nationwide realisation that the Generation Gap had also arrived, and was here to stay.

In days gone by, ladylike dress and all-round etiquette was a terribly important concept. While young women today practice shortening their skirts and heightening their heels, our grandmothers were shipped off to deportment schools to learn to keep their knees together, remove their elbows from the table and walk with a book on their head.

Whether it’s got to do with evolution of the female (we are allowed in the work force these days, after all) or something more sinister like celebrity, music or the media, somewhere along the way we’ve given up on our feminine roots. We’ve thrown in our petticoats and polite conversation and it’s safe to say, our nannas aren’t happy.

With 1950’s fashion a huge trend at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and the Spring Racing Carnival on our doorstep, it’s time to take a leaf out of that balancing book and act like a lady.

n speaking with June-Dally Watkins, I could only be mesmerized and inspired by such a strong minded and willed individual. This remarkable 83-year-old is one of the most successful businesswomen in Australia’s history. This year she celebrates the 60th anniversary of her highly acclaimed and internationally successful personal development schools.

Born out of wedlock in 1927 with economic difficulties confronting her modest family in the small NSW country town of Watson Creek, her story of success is even more remarkable when you consider that she commenced her entrepreneurial rise in 1950 when women were expected to stay at home, play house and raise children.

Her achievements in life and in business have always been founded on her strong convictions regarding the importance of good old fashion family values, which, in their day revered proper etiquette, decency and basic good manners.

“Most people don’t understand that etiquette is simply good manners. It simply means being kind, considerate, thoughtful and caring for other people as well as conducting yourself in a way that is acceptable in a proper dignified manner,” Miss Dally as she is affectionately known, tells COVET. With the Spring Racing Carnival set to commence, Miss Dally has many words of wisdom for those who are about to embark on the celebrations that this time of the year encourages. These are words that come from an acclaimed model, a mother of four high achieving children, a grandmother of seven, and a woman who on the 15th October has been invited to Parliament house to celebrate her longevity in teaching, guiding and caring for her pupils.

“In my day it was about elegance, class and style, and I encourage the young people of today to dress with style, and behave with class. Too many young people of today have adopted the American way. They are copiers, they copy, copy, copy… They should be their own person and access what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is bad, what is ugly and what is beautiful. They should work that out for themselves and not be such copiers. Being an individual is beautiful.

Following her crowning glory in 1949 and on her mother’s insistence her business venture was born – it was the first ever finishing school in the southern hemisphere, and from its humble beginnings in 1950, June Dally Watkins Education and Training it is now solidly established in Sydney and Brisbane as well as an international presence throughout South East Asia.

Founding the concept on etiquette with a strong focus on modeling techniques, Miss Dally’s empire has now expanded to include one of Australia’s first Business Finishing College, school holiday programs, weekend courses and corporate training.

Learning to love and understand oneself as a person, achieve inner beauty and encouraging the personal recognition of an individual’s inherent qualities are some of the primary philosophies that June incorporates into her teachings, but in conjunction with these Miss Dally also believes that her life experiences and what she can impart onto her students add another element of richness to her teachings.

“We do have a lot of young people who have problems and we care for them and look after them and my belief is that you should like yourself, and like the person who lives inside you, and if you like yourself it makes you happy and you can be more successful in life.

“I encourage them to be the best they can be in every way from the top of their head to the tips of their toes, and even to the tips of their fingernails.”

For the upcoming festivities of the Spring Racing Carnival which will then be proceeded with all the continual celebrations of the summer she encourages young people to have fun, but in a refined and elegant manner.

“They should dress in style and create a lovely impression of themselves, not wear short shorts, or short dresses because that is tacky, it detracts from who you are, and leads people to perceive you in ways for all the wrong reasons. It degrades that person that thinks it is acceptable to wear brief clothes.

“If you are not cheap and tacky you will attract decent people. On television every night bad behavior and bad language is flaunted and every night there is violence, we have been influenced too much by the American way, but style and sophistication is beautiful, holding oneself with grace is beautiful and appreciating who you are on the inside is incredibly beautiful.

“I think the race meeting is a wonderful occasion, I think it is a great time to shine but it should be modest, and the most important thing is to conduct oneself in a ladylike or

Military What do you get when you add a cup of 1930’s and 1940’s fashion to a dash of the 1980’s and a pinch of the 2010’s? Men’s military fashion, at it’s finest – well-fitted coats in gorgeous shades of brown, camel, military green and navy blue, cropped styles adorned with buttons reminiscent of your grandfather’s WWII uniform and aviator boots.

Burberry and Philip Lim are the best bet for those of you looking to invest in well-made militaryinspired pieces. Luckily, the military trend works for both casual and formal events and can be paired with everything from your expensive Paul Smith suit to your faded jeans and sneakers.

Suit Up Barney may have made the saying cool but it’s designers like Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford and Dolce & Gabbana who are responsible for spike in suit sales this year. One problem men are often faced with when buying a suit is the mind-numbingly vast number of options. My advice is to start with a style and fabric, then pick a color, before looking at the details like pockets and buttons. Look for a suit with broad shoulders, a slim waist and slim trousers, which will define your shape but keep you from looking boxy.

The biggest trends of the moment for suits is the slim fit and colour, which Calibre, Arthur Galan and Jack London do amazingly well.

The Bow Tie A bow tie? Is she serious? Sure, it’s not traditionally known as a manly accessory, but it will have your fashion cred increasing quicker than your girlfriend’s temperature. To be fair, we’ll let you skip on the fitted sweaters and cropped chinos so long as you promise to don a bow tie the next time you need to slip into a penguin suit. To incorporate it into your casual wear (and simultaneously push some boundaries), try wearing it with knee-length shorts, a check button-up shirt and a blazer.

Men’s Brooches Personally, I’m not too sure about this trend. In theory it sounds jolly fine – women can wear brooches to show their outfits off in the best light possible so why can’t men? Especially when designers like Yves Saint Laurent have sent their male models down the runway sporting slightantiqued brooches. Still, I can’t help but find it a bit odd. If you want to experiment, check out Ebay for one-of-a-kind options. I do suggest you make sure your brooch isn’t too flashy or too big – being stylish is wonderful, being ostentatious… not so much. Subtlety is key.

Cardigans Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be a stuck-up, preppy, Upper East Side resident or an artsy Brooklynite to wear cardigans. Having a halfway decent of sense of style is a good enough excuse. Opt for a lightweight cotton or cashmere cardigan in shades of grey, cream or powder blue over a casual tee for during the day or under your blazer for the more formal of events. You can find yourself a good cardigan in just about every menswear store – yes, even your beloved Abercrombie has a supply.

good suit is like a new girlfriend – it’s good looking, fits nicely on your arm and in the beginning, you’re constantly trying to find reasons to be around it. On the other hand, a bad suit might just be the reason behind you not having a girlfriend at all. Luckily, COVET is here to help, giving you a no-fail guide to finding the perfect suit, all just in time for the Spring Racing Carnival.

It’s safe to say that when shopping for a suit, most men with either: a) Borrow one from a mate b) Begrudgingly visit their closest department store and buy the closest suit in sight c) Wear whatever their girlfriend/wife/mother hands them on the day of event Most men will also, right about now, be wondering what’s wrong with any of those options. The answer, my sartorially challenged male friends, is everything. Not only will a good suit help make you look a million bucks, but it will feel like it too.

THE SIGNS TO LOOK FOR The fit of both the jacket and pants should suit your body shape.

Not the fittest guy at the pub? Step away from the skinny pants.

Always make sure your suit is well cut though – it should be flush with your shoulders and slim around your arms and legs.

The fabric should be of high quality. Even if you’re no designer, it should feel soft, thick, and expensive.

Be aware of current trends and pick one that suits your style.

At the moment, the slim suit is reigning supreme as is a fresh colour, like maroon or grey. Subtle details like a trim along the lapel lining adds a modern touch.

THE FINAL TOUCH The accessories you choose to accompany your suit will either make or break your look. That attention-to-detail quality you put on your resume will come in handy when choosing a shirt, tie, belt, cuff links and shoes. Decide where you can splurge and where you can scrimp. Your shirt should fit comfortably (no busting buttons) and unless you’re the adventurous type, opt for block colours or safe patterns. Your tie should be slim, your cuff links simple, your belt matching and your shoes clean.

THE BEST BRANDS Where you buy your suit from will ultimately depend on your budget, but you should know a suit is an investment piece. Yes, just like your spouse’s new handbag small enough only to fit a credit card, but big enough to cost you three weeks pay, a new suit will last you until the day you die (beer-induced weight gain excluded). If you can, save up for a suit a little out of your price range. If you’ve been invited to an event last minute, think about hiring one from a good quality suit service.

tempting fate

I

n life, there are three types of people. There are those that have a clear set of goals and an even clearer head – they know what they want and they’ll do anything to get there. And they usually do. Then there are those that give it their best shot but for whatever reason, they just don’t get there. Lastly, there are the people who have a little something extra, the ‘X’ factor – they might not plan on striking it big but as fate would have it, they will anyway. It comes to you. At risk of sounding brash on his behalf, Scott McGregor falls into the latter category.

Born in small-town Albury, New South Wales, Scott became passionate about graphic design, going on to study it before trying his luck in modelling and a little show called Temptation stepped in and changed his course of fate.

“I did some modelling while I was studying and I really got into [it] for something different, earn a bit of cash on the side, meet some new people and that sort of thing,” Scott tells COVET. “You go into these roles not knowing who you’re going to meet and where it might take you… I never really got into modelling to make a career out of it… but it does open up a lot of doors and you do meet a lot of people.”

One of those people is long-term girlfriend and fellow model Chelsea Butler who appeared alongside Scott on Temptation as his comodel. Almost five years on they are still in a relationship and living together. After landing his break and the girl of his dreams in an industry he was working at “on the side”, one would think luck might dry up but for Scott it only opened up more doors. “[The production company] rang me out of the blue one day and said how would you like to be one of the hosts for Holidays For Sale?

So I went in and had a meeting and before I knew it I was travelling around Australia doing stories for that.”

In addition to this, a hosting gig on Fox8’s Blood, Sweat and Gears, a bit part in Underbelly and a bevy of commercial appearances both in print and on TV meant Scott’s career had been decided for him.

In August, his future looked brighter again after landing his “first decent part” as successful workaholic Detective Mark Brennan on long-running Australian soap Neighbours. Added to the cast to investigate an attempted murder on Paul Robinson, Brennan finds himself attracting love interests along the way. His contract of four weeks was extended into six months to accommodate for this central storyline he’s involved in. As McGregor discusses his new character, I can’t help but wonder if they’re alike in any way.

Although passionate about his work, McGregor is by no means a workaholic, listing his other interests as AFL, cricket, poker, surfing, golf and music. Love interest, on the other hand? Well you can see why he is one of Australia’s favourite male models.

Although McGregor’s original career plan might have looked a little different, it seems he’s settling into his newfound ‘actor’ title.

“I think it was something that I’ve always really liked and I wanted to do but it’s another thing hoping to pay your mortgage and your bills with. I think that’s the difference between making a career out of it and just having something to do on the side. The first couple of weeks were a bit daunting meeting everyone and I felt like I was at a new high school, but I’m really enjoying myself now. It’s great!”

Model, presenter and actor for now, but would McGregor dare improve on a career trifecta down the track?

“I’d like to get into more of the production side… Go back to design or work for an advertising agency. I think it’d be great to be an art director.”

Something tells me he might just reach that goal too.

hile the broody weather of Melbourne didn’t live up to the colour of the MSFW catwalk, Jack London certainly brought their own piece of vibrancy to the week of fashion.

Known for their signature edgy mod/ Brit rock look, the S/S 20/11 collection chose a different path, infusing a bouquet of bold colours into the menswear with soft pink blazers, purple pants, and a rich velvet-look burgundy suit.

Each model resembled a unique vision from slim ties, touching softly on a Bob Dylan rock star inspired look whilst the delectable bow ties and mauve blazers created a softer romantic feel, infused with European inspiration.

The collection was eclectic, from the preppy to the structured, giving male fashion a brand new feel.

Designer Karl Bartl gives us an insight into his brand new collection and a small glimpse into the designer world…

Q. What was the inspiration behind the spring collection?

Inspiration came from 1960’s students and the Tour de France. I wanted to create a youthful, fun impression and was inspired by the coloured cycling tops.

Q. In your opinion, what is the season’s key trend for men?

In my opinion the season’s key trend is classic casual styles, including cotton suits and lots of linen, in pastel shades.

Q. Do u think there has been a dramatic change in menswear and why?

I think there has only been subtle changes in the past decade. When everyone is doing everything, fashion trends don’t seem to be so strong or last as long. But I think the only way of doing something new when everyone is doing everything is to work on the classics.

Q. What/who inspired you to become a designer?

I was inspired by my rock and roll idols and European cinema of the sixties.

Michael Cain, Alain Delon, Joy Division, Blow up, etc.

Q. What would you describe your style/ vision as a designer?

Tradition remains the starting point for me. My style is suit and tie, but given an edge with a slim silhouette and sort of rebellion of details, with narrow lapels, square shoulders, tapered pants.

In its formerly fuzzy place is a military-short crop, (not to mention the seriously inked post- boot camp arms) signifying a complete style shift for the X-Factor judge.

These days Sebastian thinks tight, decking out his reformed frame in hugging tees and short-sleeved check shirts, usually accompanied by a natty tie or waistcoat to lend it a groomed edge.

F

or any normal soap star catching their big break through our primetime TV slot, what happens once the honeymoon is over is one of two outcomes. Either they can crack the international audience through a couple of good feature film choices, or they can drop off the face of the earth.

Then again, Paul O’Brien is no normal soap star.

Introducing himself in 2005 as Constable Jack Holden – the newest cop to serve and protect Summer Bay on iconic Australian drama Home and Away – Paul O’Brien seemed to appear out of nowhere. Like most aspiring stars though, he was chipping away at his craft long before he joined the force. With a resume rattling off plays, short films, emceeing, standup comedy and even a stint spruiking on Melbourne’s Collins St, for Paul Home and Away was a well-deserved reward, and a valuable one at that.

“I think that Home and Away is… like a boot camp for actors. I think any actor would really find it a challenge because there’s so much to it and it’s moving so fast and you’re learning so much. It just gives you the best base that you could imagine. It just makes you become a better actor, without fail,” Paul tells COVET. But he isn’t the only one reaping the benefits of his improved acting skills. The actor has recently opened his own acting school, proving that an unfortunate music career doesn’t always follow a stint on a soap. The Actor’s Nest, situated in Melbourne’s culturally happening suburb of St Kilda, is a haven for wannabe actors to learn the trade through creative perspectives in a comfortable environment.

“A lot of it is about confidence and it’s about relationships and because I did study a lot of that stuff it’s really been a nice crossover; it’s working beautifully and we’ve had a great response.

“Learning all those kinds of techniques, [I’m] making it actorfriendly, because so often your taught by directors or casting directors, and I feel like there’s that common denominator that’s missing for an actor, so it’s explained so the actor can understand it. Also just to make the actor believe in themselves which ultimately the actor needs to be able to do and it’s an art form in itself.”

Based on Steven R. Covey’s ‘Seven Habits of Effective People’, Paul’s classes go deeper than the basics. The concept is derived from business – our relationships, the fight or flight method, changing our habits, creating a good life plan and being proactive.

“People die not because of the snake bite, but because they tried to chase the snake that bit them. So it’s along the lines of when

something happens to you, don’t be affected by it, don’t keep trying to chase that snake. Deal with it and move on with your life.

“It’s really about just helping them get to that next step. We start out by working out specifically what it is they want to achieve, what shows they want to be on and where they see themselves, what roles they’re likely to get cast for and all that.”

Of course, there are big perks to having an established actor as your guide and the students are already carving careers of their own, with one student being cast on Paul’s former rival program, Neighbours.

“The beauty of the school is that I’ve got acting friends out there and between jobs we can all share our knowledge and give the guys some inspiration and some wisdom. That’s why it’s doing so well at this stage.

“Some of these guys are getting auditions and directors are dropping in and actually auditioned some of the guys. With previous students, I think it’s six of them end up getting short film roles.”

Guest speakers include Eliza Cotter Taylor (Neighbours, The Saddle Club and co-founder of The Actor’s Nest), Kendal Rae (The Shack), Andy McPhee (Animal Kingdom, Wolk Creek), Mark Raffety (Neighbours) and “the list goes on”.

Surprising as it is, ‘refreshing’ is probably a better word to describe an actor pioneering a new path post-soap; moving onwards and upwards and taking those budding actors that share his former struggle with him for the ride.

I ask him where he would be today if it weren’t for acting, to which he replies, “I imagine it would have turned to something creative in marketing or producing and directing”. Somehow though, I get the impression the answer should be teacher – or philosopher.

“Knowledge is power. Learn all that you can, research, get a good plan, ask the right questions and just enjoy the ride. Acting is about the journey, not about the race.”

I haven’t seen my husband all weekend. In fact, we’ve barely talked. When we’re apart, we prefer to miss each other so we keep all SMS, phone and Skype contact to a bare minimum.

We joke that one day, we’d like to own two houses right next to each other, with separate front doors and our own bedrooms.

We would have sleepovers - “Should we stay at your house or mine tonight, honey?” - invite each other over for dinner and pick each other up for dates at the front door instead of trying to get ready together, crammed into a tiny bathroom.

It’s a refreshing change from the generations that came before: “My parents do everything together,” says Gen Y-er Adam.

“They won’t even go to the supermarket without one another.

They think it’s odd if I have a night out on the town without my girlfriend – everyone keeps asking what’s wrong? Are we breaking up?”

Different hobbies, separate bank accounts and mutually exclusive groups of friends all spell out a new trend that may just be the thing that rescues the institution of marriage.

It is a shift of necessity. Women are more independent than previous counterparts, people spend longer at university and more time on their careers, where they develop independence well into their 20s before settling down. Generation Y are headstrong, confident and less likely to compromise.

Situation perfect, right?

Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton certainly seem to think so. They live in adjoining million-dollar houses, which has raised a few eyebrows around the world. But you can’t help but wonder if they’re onto something.

In a recent interview, Bonham-Carter commented on their unique arrangement: “In any relationship, after the first year is over, you can’t help but want your own space. We have different telly tastes and both work from home. But things obviously aren’t that bad between us, or I wouldn’t have gotten up the duff, would I? I’m very happy.”

Not everyone is buying separate homes (who are we kidding, in this economic climate people can barely afford one house), but the fact is that Generation Y has come of marrying age and, as with every other mould before, they are breaking the traditional convention of marriage and turning the institution into something of their own.

‘Married Singles’ (or De facto Singles, as the case may be) are a growing breed.

While the term once earmarked troubled relationships, the new class of ‘Married Singles’ is reinventing it with their own positive slant.

Trying to mesh two very independent lives together the way married couples once did is just not going to work anymore.

The new married singles have even taken to vacationing without each other. You want to holiday in the Maldives, but your sweetie is more of a snow bunny? No problem! See you in a month, darling.

But it’s not all bunnies and rainbows.

Some relationship experts are dubious about the repercussions of couples living independent lives, cautioning against a complete separation from one another.

Inescapably, your spouse needs to be the most important person in your life – independence or not.

Be sure to schedule quality time together, make sure you have rituals as a couple to connect you. Make joint decisions together and just because you can holiday happily without each other, doesn’t mean you should do it all the time.

Marriage as it stands is clearly not working for us – the 40% divorce rate is testament to that. It’s time for Generation Y to do what they do best – redefine tired, flagging institutions into something new and inspired.
