Carnival returns

COME AND ENJOY THE FUN AT THE BBQ FESTIVAL 312 South Main St. • Covington, TN • 476-8614 68 Doctors Drive • Munford, TN • 837-0188 www.whitleyandhughes.com

For the first time in 20 years the Barbecue Festival will have a carnival. PBJ Happee Days, owned by Pam Casper, from Marion, Arkansas will be bringing rides, inflatables, and games for the children and the children at heart. Pam Casper’s mother, who began the business, used to come to Covington every year in the summer when the festival was a lot hotter. She has great memories of Covington since she came with her mother as a child and looks forward to returning now that she is an adult. The carnival will set up in the park where the tennis courts

formerly were, on the hill next to the Dixie Youth field. Since festival attendees will have to cross the parking lot from the playground area to get to the carnival, Mayor David Gordon is providing trailer rides free of charge from the festival area to the carnival area. A walkway through the parking with be marked off for the safety of those crossing. Happee Days Carnival will be in the park from Thursday, Sept. 30 through Oct. 2. Individual tickets for the amusements will be for sale along with wristbands.

County Executive Jeff Huffman and all of the Tipton County Commissioners invite everyone to come out and enjoy all of the activities including Opening Ceremonies, Bull Riding, Kid’s Night, Carnival, Live Music, Demolition Derby, Wiener Dog Races, Helicopter Rides, BBQ Judging, Truck Pull. BBQ Fest holds Music in the Park

The 2010 Tipton County Bar-B-Que Festival will present two nights of free concerts at this year’s event. The diverse lineup includes an up and coming country music artist and three of the youngest and most talented acts from the Memphis music scene. The concert series kicks off Thursday night Sept. 30 with Nashville recording artist Mickey Utley. Mickey recently signed a record deal and management agreement with Mick-Armour Records/ Management and has just finished recording his first CD for the label “Til Our Hats Float.” The CD was produced by Norro Wilson and Rick Holt. Norro is known for discovering such stars as Shania Twain, Sammy Kershaw and Mindy McCready and has also produced headliners such as Kenny Chesney, Reba McIntyre, John Michael Montgomery and too many others to mention. Mickey will be singing his recently released single “Cry like Memphis.” The concert is scheduled from 8 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Friday’s concert begins at 7:30 p.m. with Brittany Russell, a 12-year-old powerhouse performer from Memphis. Brittany and her band the Trunk Monkeys perform pop & rock style songs ranging from Miley Cyrus, Hillary Duff, Avril Lavigne to Aerosmith, Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin as well as their own. Singing on stage since she was eight, Brittany is an experienced performer in the Mid South area playing to large crowds ranging from clubs, festivals and statewide events. For those who have yet to see this amazing performer or hear her remarkable voice, here is your opportunity to enjoy what crowds in Memphis have been seeing for quite some time and you will find yourself agreeing with everyone in the city of the blues that this is indeed the “Little Lady with the Great Big Voice”.

At 9 p.m., The Michael Brothers are set to take the stage. This trio of brothers from Arlington, Tenn. have played across Memphis and throughout the Southeast region. The Michael Brothers’ shows are comprised from a long list of originals and covers ranging from rock to funk to blues to country. Deadfall Rd. closes the show taking the stage 10:30 p.m. This band was formed in 2008 and quickly received attention wherever they played. DFRD has performed in such venues as The New Daisy, Snowden Grove, Neil’s, The Stage Stop and many out of town shows from Florence Ala., Little Rock, Ark. to Jackson, Mich.where they perform at Rockapalooza. This year’s concert series promises something for all ages. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy great music and good food from the many vendors.

New Events Cobb-Parr Park will host new events this year, one of which is the “Running of the Weenies” on Saturday at 1 p.m. Dachshunds will race each other for charity, with all proceeds from the entry fees going to the Covington Animal Rescue and the Tipton County Animal Shelter. Another new event will be professional bull riding at the riding arena, starting at 7 p.m. During halftime the Greased Pig Contest and the Calf Throw for children will take place. Pick Up Porkers is another new event and part of the cooking contest. This division is for those backyard cookers who do not want to compete in the championship contest. All rules and regulations for this new event can be found on our website. The MBN sanctioned Championship BBQ Contest will begin on Thursday, Sept. 30. MBN representatives, Henry and Kelly Evans, will be available to help any new teams who would like to try their hand at cooking championships BBQ. Calling all vendors Are you the owner of a home business and need an outlet for your wares? Are you an organization or business who needs to get your name out among the public? Do you have a concession that makes the best cotton candy or the tastiest corn dogs? Would you like to show off your Arts and Crafts to possible buyers? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then you may need to get on board for the 38th Annual World’s Oldest BBQ Cooking Contest and Festival. There is still space available for vendors and concessionaires for the weekend of Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and 2 in Cobb-Parr Park in Covington. Linda Wilson, chairperson of the Vendors and Concessions Committee, asks that anyone who might have any questions about par-

ticipating, to call her at 901-476-7104 or you can email her at lwilson@covingtones.com “We are expecting twice the number of people at this year’s event because of the free gate”, states Linda, “and we hope that our vendors and concessionaires make twice the money. Even if you are not selling anything, but only want to put up displays, we can accommodate you. Church groups, businesses, organizations or even individuals are all welcome.” Call for the pricing for the different size spaces. Concessions, vendors, and displays may begin setting up on Thursday morning, Sept. 30 at 9 a.m. All pricing and vendor details may be found on the website: www. covingtontn.com.

New cooking division at festival

The 38th Annual Tipton County Barbeque Festival will introduce a new Memphis Barbeque Network sanctioned cooking division to be called the Pick-Up Porker Division. The Pick-Up Porker division is a “starter division that allows teams not familiar with MBN type contests the opportunity to compete without the cost of a big competitive team. It’s designed to mimic conditions of tailgating on limited size areas and cookers without water or electricity. Teams will compete within the framework of rules provided by MBN and must use gas or charcoal recreational type cookers/smokers only. Large pro style cookers are not allowed.

The Pick-Up Porker Division works to reduce costs for teams by limiting these teams to a pork rib category only and blind judging. Pick-Up Porker teams can also participate in the ancillary (anything but) competitions also. Area and personal appearance points are not added, but may be deducted by the reps or contest organizer for teams whose areas are not neat or organized. Teams will be provided a 20’ by 20’ space to set up and cook in the event. Teams are required to provide all of their own assistants, utensils, meat, sauce, charcoal, wood, cookers, tents, tables, chairs, dinnerware, and/or anything else they may need to prepare their entry.

Thursday, September 30, 2010 • BBQ FEST 2010 • 7

Entry fee is $100 per team and judging is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 2. Teams will be allowed to set up on Friday Oct. 1. Prize money will depend upon the number of entries. This year’s Festival opens Thursday evening Sept. 30 with Opening Ceremonies, Bull Riding and Kids Night at the riding arena, carnival and live music in the park by Nashville recording artist Mickey Utley featuring his new single “Cry Like Memphis. For entry forms or more information on this year’s event, visit the website at www.covingtontn.com/bbq.htm or contact Sandra McCalla at 901-652-0555 or Linda Wilson at 901-476-7104.

Tractor pull on Saturday Here we go again – beating and banging – who can last the longest? It’s Demolition Derby time again. The 2010 Tipton County BBQ Festival’s Demolition Derby is expected to be bigger, louder, and more exciting than ever. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 at the Riding Arena at Cobb Parr Park. These cars might look like clunkers, but in reality beauty

is more than skin deep. Countless hours and countless dollars have been invested in getting these cars ready to withstand the unrelenting assault from competitors. Safety for the drivers is a big concern for the demolition officials. All glass must be removed from the car and all hardware removed such as door handles, outside mirrors, radio antennas and even out-

side chrome trim. Gas tanks must be moved and batteries located to protect the drivers from acid. The hoods of the cars are required to have holes over the valve covers in case of a fire. All cars hoping to compete in the Demolition Derby will be inspected by officials on the night of the derby and are disqualified if all regulations are not followed.
