Another year in the books Children’s Classic remains popular fundraiser

NO ONE'S REALLY SURE ANYMORE HOW LONG THE Children's

Classic has been going on – maybe 30 years, maybe more – but one thing is for sure: It's more popular than ever. In 2018, the magazine also won Best in Show and Best Special Section at the Tennessee State Press Awards. The event – from booking those coveted appointments to the special publica-

tion's release – remains one of the most-anticipated things about the late winter/early spring season and, here at The Leader, our phones begin ringing with questions about the release date in February. It really is a great problem to have because it means the great folks of Tipton County are still interested in helping those who need it.

You thought it was about the pictures? It's about so much more! A portion of

the proceeds from the photos is donated to the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse. To date, that donation is more than $250,000! We – along with our partners, InSouth Bank and Richard and Phil Ramsey –

thank you for being a part of something that is desperately needed!

PARENTING

Five tips for making parenting less stressful Juggling responsibilities to work and family can sometimes make parents feel a little overwhelmed. That feeling of being stretched thin can contribute to stress, which many parents acknowledge is part of their daily lives. Stress isn’t always caused by life-changing events. In fact, a recent study of 2,000 parents in the United Kingdom found that the daily worries of bed time, getting homework finished, weekly food shopping, and meal times were parents’ biggest stress triggers. The research, conducted by BPme, a new app that allows customers to pay for their fuel without leaving their car, said the average parent felt stressed six times a day. Data from a 2015 Pew Research Study indicates 15 percent of American parents say their job as a parent is tiring all the time, while an additional 18 percent say parenting is tiring most of the 56 CHILDREN'S CLASSIC ★ SPRING 2020

time. Ten percent indicated being a parent is stressful all of the time, while 15 percent said it is most of the time. The younger the age of the children at home, the more stress many parents say they face. It is well documented that stress can have various negative physical and psychological symptoms, which put stress sufferers’ overall health at risk. Parents can curtail stress by instituting some lifestyle changes and employing other management techniques. • Don’t take work stress home. It’s easy to bring home work-related problems, which can then combine with issues at home. Try to talk to a coworker or a spouse before leaving work to diffuse tricky situations so they can be left at work. • Increase quality family time. Take a break from the extracurricular activities, volunteer responsibilities and the other

tasks that pull families in different directions. Slow down and schedule fun activities that foster parentchild relationships, such as game nights or family movie nights. • Seek professional help. Parents who are having difficulty coping can enlist the services of trained mental health professionals, advises Psychology Today. These therapists can offer helpful strategies for coping with life’s challenges. • Stick to a routine. Keeping kids on routine schedules enables parents to know which moments of the day they can get a break to rest and recharge. • Ask for help. Do not be a martyr or attempt to be a superhero. Parents who need help should reach out for assistance, especially if it’s to tame stress. Doing so is in the best interest of the entire family. Stress is something many parents face, but it can be overcome.

PARENTING

Sydney Murrell, 11, attends the Covington Rotary Club's Adopt-a-Park cleanups with her grandfather, Winston Howard.

How families can volunteer together The efforts of volunteers often go unnoticed, but the thoughtful men, women and children who give up their free time to support worthy causes do a lot to bolster their communities. Volunteering also pays dividends for the volunteers, and not just because they’re helping to strengthen the communities they call home. According to the Mayo Clinic, research has shown that volunteering can lower rates of depression and promote better physical health compared to not volunteering. In addition, an analysis of data from the Longitudinal Study of Aging found that individuals who volunteer have lower mortality rates than those who do not. With so many benefits to volunteering, it’s no wonder that

families often seek ways to volunteer together. Such efforts can be a great way to spend time together and give back to a community, all the while affording families a chance to reap the many rewards of volunteering. The following are a handful of potential volunteering opportunities that families can consider. Litter cleanups The National Park Service estimates that plastics account for up to 90 percent of the trash floating in the ocean and littering shores. Many national and local organizations aim to combat plastic pollution via beach cleanups, and these efforts welcome volunteers of all ages, making them ideal ways for families to give back together. But litter is not just a problem for See VOLUNTEER, page 60

How to spark more family communication Communication is at the core of any successful relationship. Families who are able to communicate effectively can express their concerns, needs and desires to one another in an open and honest manner. Effective communication can change a home environment, foster more intimate and trusted relationships, and serve as a foundation for children to grow. The benefits of effective home communication are numerous. According to Hearing and SpeechLanguage Services, regular and intentional communication with a child is one of the most effective tools parents and caregivers can use to foster healthy development, paving the way for the child to be an effective communicator as he or she grows and interacts with others. In addition, regular communication can foster a strong sense of self-esteem, improve problemsolving abilities, decrease problem behaviors, and prepare kids for voicing their opinion on important issues. No topics are off limits when it See COMMUNICATION, page 63 CHILDREN'S CLASSIC ★ SPRING 2020 57

PARENTING

You've heard of attachment parenting, but what is it? Many parents aspire to develop close emotional bonds with their children. Children who understand that their parents are nearby and will respond to their needs effectively begin to develop trust in those around them. This nurturing can extend to being well-rounded and emotionally secure into adulthood. Parents may subscribe to various parenting models as they look to bond with their children. One such approach is attachment parenting. Proponents of this type of parenting include the well-known pediatrician William Sears, M.D., an author who coined the term “attachment parenting.” Attachment parenting promotes methods that aim to build attachments between parent and infant by responsiveness and also through continuous bodily closeness and touch. Components of attachment parenting include bonding with the

58 CHILDREN'S CLASSIC ★ SPRING 2020

baby before and directly after birth, breastfeeding, bedding close to the child, and wearing the baby as much as possible. Attachment parenting may have evolved from anthropological studies of indigenous childrearing practices that put an emphasis on emotional responsiveness, according to Greater Good Magazine. Another core component of attachment parenting, according to the organization Attachment Parenting International, is responding with sensitivity. API notes that babies communicate their needs through body movements, facial expressions and crying, and that infants learn to trust when their needs are met with consistency and sensitivity. It’s only after consistent and repeated responsiveness in a sensitive manner that babies will learn to soothe themselves as they get older. These sensitivity strategies should be carried through as a child becomes a toddler

or a school-aged child. Proponents of attachment parenting also advocate against childcare for more than 20 hours a week for babies younger than 30 months old, says WebMD. At this early developmental stage, the nearly constant presence of a parent is recommended. One potentially controversial aspect of attachment parenting is co-sleeping. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against sleeping with a young child in the same bed, as it may increase the risk for SIDS. However, workarounds, including having a baby in a separate cradle or co-sleeper very close to a parent’s bed so children can be touched and soothed through the night, are options. Expecting parents who want to learn more about the philosophy behind attachment parenting and its techniques can visit www. attachmentparenting.org.

PARENTING

The four best ways to Make the save for college tuition College is the next logical step for many newly minted high school graduates. The National Center for Education Statistics indicated that, in fall 2019, roughly 19.9 million students were slated to attend colleges and universities in the United States. Statistics Canada stated that, for the 2015-16 school year, the most recent for school statistics, just over two million students were enrolled in Canadian universities and colleges. Families need to begin thinking about how to pay for college as early as possible. According to the Wall Street Journal, the average college graduate’s student loan debt is $37,172. And the most recent data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York indicates the overall student loan debt in America alone is roughly $1.3 trillion. The average expense of sending a child to college has been rising at double the rate of inflation for more than a decade, offers CNBC. A robust college savings account can help future students avoid considerable debt. The following are some ways to save for college. • Open a tax-advantaged 529 college savings plan. The U.S. Securities and

Exchange Commission says a 529 is a savings plan designed to encourage saving for future education costs. The person funding the account pays taxes on the money before it’s contributed to the 529 plan. Funds can be used for education expenses. There are two types of 529 plans: prepaid tuition plans and education savings plans. The prepaid plans allow account holders to purchase units or credits at participating colleges and universities. With education savings plans, account holders open investment accounts to save for qualified future higher education expenses, including room and board. • Invest in a Coverdell Education Savings Account. A Coverdell account is a tax-advantaged method to contribute up to $2,000 per year to a child’s account. Individuals need to be under a certain income level to contribute. The funds will grow free of federal taxes. • Consider a Uniform Transfer/ Gift to Minors account. This is a custodial account that holds and protects assets for beneficiaries, who are typically donors’ children. The custodian controls the assets until the See COLLEGE, page 60

dentist a fun experience for kids Visits to the dentist for periodic cleanings and checkups are an important component of oral hygiene. Dentists also may be the first people to identify potential issues that can affect health elsewhere in the body. Many people are unaware that children should visit the dentist early in their lives. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child should visit the dentist by age one or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. However, many parents wait until much later — age two or three — to take kids to the dentist, offers Delta Dental Plans. Hesitance to visit the dentist may stem from personal fears or perceived reactions by children. Primary teeth may eventually fall out, but they shouldn’t be ignored. They save space for permanent teeth See DENTIST, page 60 CHILDREN'S CLASSIC ★ SPRING 2020 59

PARENTING

DENTIST Continued from 59 and serve other functions. Therefore, parents should begin to acclimate children to the dentist at a young age to make the experience fun and even enjoyable. Lead by example Children who witness their parents putting off going to the dentist or being apprehensive about visiting the dentist may develop their own fears. Always paint the dentist in a positive light and keep appointments. Focus on the good aspects Talk up all the benefits of going to the dentist, such as having a squeaky clean and fresh mouth. Many hygienists will hand out small toys after a successful visit, or at the least a great new toothbrush and other fun products to try. Get a tour of the office Ask the staff if your child can get a special tour of the office with explanations of all the tools and equipment. Understanding what to expect the next time around in a no-pressure situation can make the process much easier for everyone involved. The dentist may be able to also give a test ride on the exam chair, moving it up and down, as well as showing off the water fountain and oral irrigator. Avoid giving false hope Do not tell a child that “everything will be OK” at the dentist’s office. If a child needs treatment that may be uncomfortable, he or she may not trust you the next time a dental visit is scheduled, according to Joel H. Berg, D.D.S., M.S., Director of the Department of Dentistry at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Avoid words like “shots,” “pain,” “hurt,” or even “cavities.” Dentists, particularly pediatric dentists, may have their own vocabulary that can assuage fears and seem less alarming to kids. Over time, dental visits can become an easy routine with children, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy mouths and teeth.

COLLEGE Continued from 59 minor reaches legal age. The money will not grow tax-free, and it can be used for purposes other than school expenses. The account also may count against the student and parent when applying for financial aid, which is something to keep in mind. • Open an IRA. IRAs are often associated strictly with retirement savings. However, they also can be used for qualified college payments as long as the contributions have been made for at least five years, advises Nationwide Insurance. • Use a standard savings account. Even though it may not grow as quickly as investment accounts, routinely saving money in a savings account can be another means to saving for college. Starting early can give families ample time to save substantial amounts of money for youngsters’ college educations.

VOLUNTEER Continued from 57 oceanfront communities. The organization Keep America Beautiful notes that 66 million pounds of litter and recyclables were collected in 2019. KAB hosts various litter cleanup programs in towns and cities across the country and encourages families to join their movement. Combat homelessness According to the 2019 “The State of Homelessness

in America” report from The Council of Economic Advisers, in January 2018, more than a half a million people were counted as homeless in the United States. Statistics in Canada are not as recent as those in the United States, but estimates suggest as many as 235,000 Canadians are homeless in any given year. Volunteering at a nearby homeless shelter is a great way for families to help this

60 CHILDREN'S CLASSIC ★ SPRING 2020

often underserved segment of the population. Contact a local homeless shelter to learn about specific volunteering opportunities, which may involve preparing and serving meals; tutoring homeless men, women and children; and involvement in other services shelters offer. Clothing drives Clothing drives not only benefit the homeless, but they also help people who

simply don’t have the means to purchase new clothing. Families can donate their own slightly used clothing to nearby goodwill organizations and organize clothing drives through their schools and places of employment. Encourage neighbors to follow suit and donate their own slightly used items. Volunteering together is a great way for families to give back to their communities.

COMMUNICATION Continued from 57 comes to stimulating family conversation. In fact, the more creative, funny and adventurous the ideas, the more apt children and adults may be to engage in the discussion. These talking points can help get the conversation flowing and require specific answers instead of vague generalities. • What has been the best part of the week so far? • Tell me something interesting you learned at school (work) today. • What is the funniest joke you have ever heard? • If you could be anyone or anything in the world, what would you be and why? • If you won a lot of money, what would you spend it on? • What do you do when you see someone being teased? • Name a quality of yours that you are most proud of. • If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be? • What is your favorite childhood memory? • Where in the world would you like to live most? • Are there things that scare you? If so, what? • What would your superhero power be? • If you could fly for a day, where would you go? These are a handful of interesting conversation starters that can get creative conversation juices flowing at home. Families can customize the questions or turn them into a regular game that everyone can enjoy throughout the week.
