Wrecks claim two lives By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tipton County Sheriff's Office are investigating accidents that resulted in the loss of two people in two days. On Saturday afternoon, twoyear-old Cathlena Hinnard was killed when she was hit by a truck in front of her Stanton home. On Monday night, 22-year-old C.J. Maughan died after an SUV pulled out in front of the motorcycle he was riding on Beaver Road. The families are doing all they can to remember their loved ones. Willis Hinnard spent four hours in the middle of Charleston-Mason Road Sunday asking drivers to slow down and pay attention. Getting drivers to slow down on the rural roadway was something he’s been passionate about doing for months, and even more so after his two-year-old daughter was hit by a car and killed Saturday afternoon. But the Tennessee Highway Patrol said speed was not a factor in the accident that killed Cathlena. The little girl, who would have turned three on Aug. 29, was playing in the front yard with her four- and 10-year-old brothers. Sources say a cousin was supposed to be watching the children while the mother was inside the house. “I was only in there for a second,” she said. “I propped the bottle up, it fell, then I propped it up again.” The next thing she heard, she said, was a truck slamming on its brakes in front of her house. The driver, 38-year-old Brian Newman of Covington, said it didn't happen that way, that it took several minutes before the mother came outside when he tried to let her know the child had wandered into the road and had been hit. All that’s known for sure is that the child was in the road, was hit and died. “Accidents happen and they can happen so quickly,” said Tip-
Covington's DaiQuon Norfork (44) and Aaron Foster (5) celebrate a touchdown during jamboree action Friday night in Covington. Covington opens up the regular season tomorrow night at Munford. Covington mother organizes anti-violence rally Teresa Mason, mother of murder victim Darius "Dee Dee" Heaston, left, has organized an event to help stop the violence.
By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com
A
Covington mother has turned tragedy into triumph by organizing a fellowship event in her son’s memory. After Teresa Mason buried her second son in 12 years, she took to the streets and organized a march, calling for an end to the violence that often plagues the Frazier Park area. “This is pertaining to all of the violence that’s happened in Covington,” she said. “We’re trying to pull everyone in the community together, to be among each other and not have violence.” Mason’s third Stop the
Violence march will take place Saturday, Aug. 24. Her 20-year-old son Darius “Dee Dee” Heaston was gunned down in Frazier Park and died at The Med on Aug. 20, 2011.
Police arrested a man witnesses said shot Heaston, but the suspect was released. To date, no other arrest has been made in her son’s murder. Mason said she tries not to dwell on it and, instead, tries to work to do something positive. “I’m trying to draw peace within this community,” she said. “I know one day justice will be served.” This year, she’s organizing more than a march through the neighborhood. “We’ll have different festivities in the park with food and refreshments. We want
to turn it into a big event, to just come together for fellowship and without violence.” Mason said she hopes local churches and organizations will help make the event successful in promoting peace in a gang-ridden neighborhood. She also invites the public to participate. “It doesn’t matter your creed or color, we just want everyone to come together.” Anyone wishing to be involved with the event is asked to contact Mason at 901-338-5351. A candlelight vigil will be held in the park at 8 p.m. on Friday. The march and its related festivities will take place on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Frazier Park.

pproximately 60 sailors from various commands at Naval Support Activity Mid-South volunteered their time to perform grounds maintenance and facility upkeep at the Tipton County Museum, Veterans Memorial and Nature Center on Friday, Aug. 16. This community service project is one of many different undertakings the chief petty officer selectees, sailors selected for promotion to chief petty officer, will perform during a sixweek training process designed to prepare them for the increased duties and responsibilities as chiefs. During the process, each selectee is assigned an experienced sponsor, and together they complete a variety of mental and physical exercises in addition to performing community service projects. “As chief petty officers, we look forward to coming out to the Tipton County Museum, Veterans Memorial and Nature Center every year. It’s a very rewarding day for us and allows us to, in a small way, give back to the community by beautifying a facility that has a wealth of military heritage. I personally have a special bond with this event, as I was fortunate to be stationed here in 1999 when we first started the Navy Volunteer Day, and it is great to see that the tradition still carries on today,” said Command Master Chief Tuck Williams. This marks the 14th year that Naval Support Activity Mid-South has pitched in to help the
non-profit. The Covington Parks and Recreation Department, as well as City of Covington and Tipton County officials, are thankful for the continued support of the Navy chiefs and chief selects. “Maintaining such a large facility is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor,” said Alice Fisher, director of the Tipton County Museum. “We feel very fortunate to have been adopted by such a wonderful group of people. As always, this group of sailors performed much needed ground and building maintenance, saving the City of Covington and Tipton County large amounts of maintenance funds. We cannot get volunteer help like this anywhere else. They do a wonderful job, and we are thankful to have been chosen as one of their annual community projects,” The Navy Volunteer Day project is coordinated locally by the museum staff, Covington Parks and Recreation Director Amy Payne, Covington Public Works Director Robert Simpson, and the supervisors of the street and sanitation division of Covington Public Works, Tim Fayne and Danny Brown.

“Most people do not realize that the museum, which is an entity of the Covington Parks and Recreation Department, sits on 20 acres of land, most of which is a wooded wildlife sanctuary with a half-mile walking trail,” said Fisher. “Maintaining the trail, the wetland and pond areas, the landscaped museum grounds, and
the museum building itself is just a tremendous job. The Naval Support Activity Chief Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officer Selects have played a major role in making this a beautiful area.” The selectees will be promoted to chief petty officers in a pinning ceremony at Naval Support Activity Mid-South on Sept. 13.

Charges against officer dropped
Thursday, August 22, 2013 • The Leader • A3
By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com
A Covington police officer is waiting to be reinstated after charges against him were dropped this week. James Perry, 26, was arrested last Wednesday by one of his fellow officers on charges of domestic violence and vandalism. Police reports do not give details about what happened between Perry and his wife Chastity, 24, but the vandalism charge is related to a Samsung Galaxy Note phone. Three other people were reportedly in the house at the time of the incident on Wednesday morning. Police chief Tim Glass said Perry made an appearance in Tipton County General Sessions Court and, because his wife didn’t show up, the charges were dropped. Glass said the officer was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the charges, but that he’d likely return to work.
Deaths
Continued from A1 ton County Sheriff Office Deputy Chief Donna Turner. “And this was more than an accident, it was a tragedy.” Working together, the THP is investigating the accident while detectives with the sheriff’s office are investigating the background and the supervision of the children. “We’re going to make sure there isn’t any type of neglect or anything and this part is still under investigation,” she said. “Primarily, there were parents that were there and other children.” No charges have been filed in the accident by the THP or by the TCSO. Turner said the whole situation, not just the accident, is a tragedy. “You can turn your head and in a moment, just in a second, children can get hurt, injured, and they can get into the roadway. We routinely have calls where chil-
dren have wandered into the roadway.” On Monday, instead of making plans to celebrate her third birthday, Willis and Ginger were making Cathlena’s funeral arrangements. “It’s so unfortunate, the death of any child or anyone,” Turner said. “This is just a reminder of how precious life is.” The Maughan family in Covington is realizing this unfortunate reality this week as well. The THP reported motorcyclist Vernon C. “CJ” Maughan Jr. was traveling northbound on Beaver Road when a 2002 Isuzu Trooper pulled out of a private drive, attempting to turn left to go southbound on Beaver. The Trooper, driven by 37-year-old Amanda M. Pruitt, turned in front of Maughan. The motorcycle struck the SUV in the driver’s side door. According to the police report, Maughan was killed instantly. was wearing a helmet. An investigation into the accident is still ongoing and citations and criminal charges are listed as pending. Cousin Hogan Maughan said this wasn't CJ's first accident. "We were kinda freebirds out there on two wheels. We weren't trying to be naive, we knew the dangers," Maughan said. "I've been in an accident and he'd been in a prior accident." CJ, a graduate of Covington High School, was a member of Holly Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he was active with foreign and local missions and church camps. He worked as a pump operator for Leland Masonry and was engaged to be married. His cousin said he was very funny. "You couldn't be around CJ without being in stitches." CJ Maughan's family will receive friends
Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Holly Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His funeral will take place there at 2 p.m. on Friday and he will be buried at Helen Crigger Cemetery. In addition to fiancée Erin Lopez, Maughan leaves parents Clyde and Lisa Maughan and sisters Samantha Jo Sherman and Bonnie Maughan Wise. The Hinnard family did not wish to publish obituary details for Cathlena.

Hunger is a ‘real’ problem in county People complain about stuff. It’s human nature. Not that along ago I heard a guy (Okay, it was me.) complaining that his pool pump broke down and required a new motor. For a while I was kind of down in the dumps. You know, the whole woe is me thing. Then somebody gave me a wake up call: “Hey Jeff,” they said, “yeah that’s a real tragedy. You won’t be able to keep your pool water clear for a few days. Man, you’ve got it tough.” Those sarcastic comments served as a not-so-friendly reminder to me that people have real problems. And not just people in far away lands. There are people right TOTAL here in Tipton County who CONSCIOUSNES have trouble feeding themJ eff Ireland selves and their families. And thankfully there are other people right here in Tipton County who are trying to help. There are four different food banks in the county. First United Methodist and Second Presbyterian, both in Covington, and St. Luke Missionary Baptist, located on Highway 14 in the northeast part of the county, feed the needy. So does River of Live in Munford. They’re very busy too … and getting busier. “The need is getting greater,” said Judy Books, co-director of the River of Life food bank. “We have some families whose incomes have been cut in half and this service helps them get through the month. It makes a huge difference to them.” The River of Live Bank serves up to 500 people a month. Those numbers may seem high to some people, but according to statistics, there are way more people around here who could benefit from free food. According to the most recent stats from the U.S. Census Bureau, 15.3 percent of people in the county are below the poverty level. In a county of about 61,000 people, that translates to over 9,000 people who may be having trouble buying groceries. The problem is by no means unique to Tipton County. The state’s poverty rate is 16.9 percent. For perspective, here are the rates for some other area counties: Lauderdale, 25; Haywood, 23; Shelby, 20; Fayette, 11. While the accuracy of poverty rates can be and has been debated ad nauseum, the fact remains there are lots of people who have trouble meeting the most basic need of nutrition. So the next time you begin belly aching about something as trivial as chlorine levels in your pool, try and keep things in perspective.

This program is a very good example of why Congress must achieve passage of a comprehensive, multi-year Food, Farm and Jobs Bill as soon as possible. In January, Congress provided an extension of some 2008 Farm Bill programs when there was no Congressional passage of a comprehensive Food, Farm and Jobs Bill. Now, in just a few weeks, that extension will expire – once again leaving rural America without access to Farm Bill programs. USDA relies on the Farm Bill to carry out the Rural Energy for America Pro-
gram and many other important efforts. Without a comprehensive Food, Farm and Jobs Bill, rural America will be without energy efficiency programs. America’s farmers and ranchers will be without a strong safety net and important conservation programs. We will lack trade programs to promote U.S. products, and the ability to invest in strong agricultural research. These are just a few of many examples. This is too important for Congress to kick the can down the road with another short-term extension. We need the certainty of a comprehensive, long-term Food, Farm and Jobs Bill. USDA and folks across rural America are counting on Congress to advance this legislation as soon as possible.

In Loving Memory of
AMAndA C. RALph
August 25, 1978 - May 10, 2007 I remember the days of the past with a smile. Those memories spring like the hands of a dial, and at once, I am back there with you and your arms fold around me and I feel so blessed by your charms. The warmth of that hug, and of the memory past, are stronger and longer and always will last, and I know that wherever you’ve gone, you’re still here and these birthday memories will last the full year. Love Always and Forever, dad, Mom, Billy and all the rest of your family and friends.

The sun is setting on a beautiful Monday. It was a little warmer today, and will be all this week, but still cool for August. We received a tenth-inch of rain late Saturday night and there is not much forecasted for this week, but the ground under the crops is "moisty," as we say, and all looks well. Which leads me on to: This week's farm report: first off, a correction! The ears of corn are not hanging down yet, just at an angle.

GreetingsOn Thursday at 5 p.m. at Old Carey Chapel AME Church in Jamestown, president of missionary society Mary Burton, along with teacher, Rev. Pearl Andrews, has its weekly missionary meeting. The public is invited. On Sunday, Aug. 18, during morning service, Bright Hill observed youth day. Guest speaker was Rev. Cecilia Collins from Mablevale, Ark. Rev Collins is a close friend and school mate of Rev. Andrews. Rev. Chism, pastor of St. James M. B Church and the choir from east St. Louis, Ill. were also on the program for youth day. The young people honored Pastor S. P. Cole whose birthday was Aug. 12 and sister Janet Mosley, member of Bright Hill, for her dedicated service. Dinner was served immediately afterwards. Jamestown Community Health Organization is preparing once again for its annual night of elegance, which will be this fall. There will be information concerning the grand event as it unfolds. Also, you can still pay your yearly dues of $25 to treasurers Mary Burton and Jessie Cooke, as these funds are sorely needed for cemetery care, college scholarships and the building fund. Hello dear friends: Our son left for the Keys in Florida, on Saturday, leaving behind his motor home in our yard. If anyone needs a motor home, we have one that we will sell cheap. His girl friend in Florida called him and when he got down there on Sunday she said that she had a job for him where she works and he can go to work on Monday. What a blessing. Speaking of the motor home, we cleaned it up on Monday. Well, I was back in the bedroom, making up the bed, etc., and when I got ready to go back in our house, my husband had left and had locked me in. Needless to say, all my hollering and yelling did not do any good. He was in the house watching TV with all the doors closed. I finally climbed over in the drivers seat and hit the unlock button, got out and locked the door back. I went in the house, mad as a wet hen.He thought I was already in the house in our bedroom. Then, I was taking a shower in our bathroom and I did not have any soap in the shower, I knocked on the wall, yelled and called. I finally decided that he could not hear me, with the TV loud and with out his other hearing aid.

I’m praying conditions for cotton improve. They are forecasting a frost on Aug. 29 up north this year. Jimmy Ray finally got the parts in for our central unit and fixed it today. Thank God for the cool weather in August we had last week, and for Brett "Petey" Turner loaning us a window unit for our bedroom. Windows up, fans on, we made it! It was so hot last Tuesday that we went to Courtney Gurley's house to cool off
and she gave me a perm and cut James' hair. That night I went to eat spaghetti casserole at Elizabeth, Justin and Lyla's house in the air conditioning. This is great if you want the recipe, call! This week's cat report: Minnie broke a stitch and I had to take her Wednesday afternoon to get it put back in. All stitches will be out this Wednesday - finally! She's getting back to her old self, playing and fighting, but, alas, no front claws! The Covington Cruisers, our ladies' group from the Covington Church of Christ who take cruises together, are getting one up for Feb. 8 if any of you women want to join us. Pam Tankersley
and I are rooming together with an oceanview room! We are going to Progreso and Cozumel. It has been foggy for three mornings in a row now - old wives' tale says that for every fog you get in August, you get a snow in Feburary! A big crowd enjoyed Lauren Wall's baby boy shower at church on Sunday. It’s always fun to watch a new mom open all the cute baby things. John Oliver Wall is due in October. Eva Dale Williams and Karen Wall will be first-time grandmothers, and Bonnie Glass and Joyce Wall, first-time great-grandmothers. On our prayer list is Judy Randolph, Aerik Langs-
ton, Bonnie Holbrook, Genie Renfroe, Shirley Cook, Christine Knight, Linda Grant, Phylllis and Walter McIntosh, Sam Stitt, and so many more, along with all our servicemen and women. Happy birthday this week goes to Austin Phillips on Aug. 19, to Morgan Anderson on the 21st. Happy anniversary to Tracy and Tricia Speight on Aug. 22, and to Brian and Shelley Dickey and Alan and Debbie Otts on the 23rd. The birthday party at Covington Care will be at 2:30 p.m. on the 24th. This week's Farmer's Almanac quote: for Saturday -
"On this day in 1869, Cornelius Startwout received a U. S. patent for the first waffle iron." Thanks, Cornelius! The annual Watkins reunion is this Sunday at noon at the Covington Church of Christ, for the descendants of Edd and Nellie Crump Watkins. We'll have a big potluck meal. With school back in, plus the cool weather we had last week, I was ready to decorate for fall, but I can last until the first day of September. This year has really flown. Until next week.
“Bam Bam and ChunkChunk.” It is hard to believe Emery will be a year old this week. On Aug. 31, West Tennessee Championship Wrestling will be at the Garland Community Center. Bell time is 7:30 p.m. WTCW is a family show and we hope you enjoy the action.
It is good that it has cooled down some but the rain has made it very difficult for many to maintain their lawns. I am in the same position but I do not try to act like I am ahead. On the prayer list: Willie Mae Lawson, Lois Smith, Betty Baskin, Andrea Stafford, Carolyn Hanks,
Carla Carlson, DeVaughn Jackson, Otis Poole, Shannon Morgan and Christine Alsbrook. Also remember: Dennis Gholson, Jody Coker, Ian Boswell, Michael Barton, Ryan Hirsch, E. J. Perkins, Seth Kellow, Chance Hall, Michael Watson and those who are serving in the mili-
tary. To those who served or are currently serving, thank you. Happy birthdays this week to Linda Huffman and Emery Blackman. We have
big weekend plans and hope to make Emery’s first birthday a special one. Until next time.

Darryl Rozell, Eva Heaston, Charlene and David Sneed, Minister Pink Sherrill Jr., and Gladys Miller and family. Happy birthday on Aug. 18 to Princess Allen, David Burton and Verdell “Snooky” Burton, 15th. On Aug. 31, St Paul M.B. Church of Drummonds will have it’s annual picnic at the church, 8991 Richardson Landing Road, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Food will be sold, a softball game will be played on the grounds, with extra activities for everyone young and old. Pastor W.E. Gatlin says the public is invited, so y’all come! At one time in my life, I was an active member of this great church where a lot of my family members still are in attendance; it’s still one of the greatest churches and choirs around, of course in addition to Bright Hill! On Aug. 30, at 7 p.m., Johnnie Alston, another cousin, will celebrate her birthday at the Holiday Inn in Millington. She’s the lovely wife of Dwight Alston. Girl, congratulations on another birthday and on all of those 100,000 blessings God has for you. This is all for now. Remember, “Even though good things come in ‘small packages,’ I still prefer the ‘larger one of the two!” Until next time. Last week he was cutting grass and ran under the limb of the apple tree and it jerked the hearing aid out of his ear. He looked for it and found the loop that hangs on his ear, but never did find the hearing part. He has been on my good side all this week, since he has to get a new hearing aid and it will cost $1,800. He hates to pay out that much money, but I think it will be cheaper for him to get a new hearing aid, than for me to get a divorce. We are enjoying the senior citizens place in Munford. We go each week day for lunch and for a walk around the gym, usually walking six laps. It is really cool in the gym. One day last week at lunch I was sitting next to this man, Buddy Tedington, and I asked him how he was doing. He said , " I am doing fine, but some of my body parts are acting up, my nose runs and my feet smell.” We went to church last Sunday night. Rev. Lee Ramsey is a good teacher and we enjoyed the service. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, Oct. 6, our charge conference with district superintendent, Rev. Sandra Leatherwood. She will be preaching for us and joining us for pot luck lunch and the charge conference meeting. Love and prayers.

Sports Happenings Covington Parks and Recreation added a rhythmic abs class on Aug. 20. Class time will be 6 - 7 p.m. Turbo kick class will be added in the very near future. Cross Training with Cody is also being offered. It includes strength training, agility and speed work, boot camp style fitness, plyometrics and cardio. The class is held Wednesdays and Fridays, 5-6 p.m. Covington Parks and Recreation believes its time to honor those outstanding individuals who have excelled in the world of sports. A permanent display will be housed at the new Covington Municipal Building, just off the Square in Covington. Each year, nominations will be accepted and a committee, including previous winners, will vote as to who to accept to this group. It does not need to be someone who excelled in high school and/or college. It could be an official who worked countless numbers building a program. The first class to be accepted will be in November 2013. E-mail nominations to rvandergrift@covingtontn.com. Brighton is having a 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 14 starting at 7:15 a.m. The course runs through historic downtown Brighton, past the old high school and around town. There are two hills during the first half of the run; the first hill is a gradual incline followed very shortly by the second steeper hill. Then down through shady farmland with cows and horses for a relatively flat second half of the run. The race finishes with a nice cool run through water sprinklers. Soccer
Lady Chargers open season with blowout By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com Covington opened up the 2013 soccer season in dominating fashion Monday at home, routing South Fulton 10-1. Last season South Fulton ended the Lady Chargers' season in the district tournament. This time around was a different story. After allowing a South Fulton goal in the first min-
ute of the game, Covington scored eight times in the first half and cruised from there. “Then we seemed to get going,” Covington head coach Robert Luttrell said, referring to his team's reaction to allowing an early goal. “I pulled the starters (in the second half) and the ones I did put back in were told not to shoot at the goal and just develop their passing movement throughout the second half. Anne Marie Van Cleve scored three times for Covingto and Sherrdian Stough tallied two goals. Callie
McDaniel, J'la Brandon, Hannah Howard, Esha Tipton and Alexis Johnson each scored once. Covington hosts Peabody today at 6 p.m. “That should tell me more about our team,” Luttrell said. Munford opens its soccer season today at home against Millington. Brighton gets its season underway today at home against Bartlett. Both games start at 6 p.m. Participants in the Celebrate Munford 5K held Aug. 10 get started. Hundreds of runners took part in the annual event. Photo by Jeff Ireland

Bryant, now 104, still gets around just fine By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com Elizabeth Bryant, of Covington, recently celebrated her 104th birthday. Mrs. Bryant, born Aug. 12, 1909, is a sprightly woman, with a glint in her eyes. When asked why she believes she’s had such a long and healthy life, Mrs. Bryant said, “Well, I did anything I wanted to do.” Her caregiver Kim Baker has another theory. “She only ate pure food and meat, everything was grown here,” said Baker.
In fact, Mrs. Bryant is so healthy, that she is only on one prescription and has been in the hospital only twice in her life, her three children having been born in the house where she lives. Mrs. Bryant was born in Pisgah County and finished eighth grade. A tomboy, who wore pants in the fields while picking cotton with her family, she also helped her father break horses. In fact, she was the first rider on the horse. As a child, her great uncle lived next door to her family, and would tell her his civil war stories at bedtime. She uses a walker to get around

Tipton County and the Civil War-Mississippi By RUSSELL BAILEY County Historian By late June and early July, Col. Robert V. Richardson, 12th Tennessee Cavalry, (formerly first Tenn. Partisan Rangers) was back in southwest Tennessee recruiting a Confederate cavalry brigade. The following, published in Confederate newspapers, described his mission: HEADQUARTERS, KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, June 17, 1863 Proclamation to Conscripts in West Tennessee. In pursuance of an order from the Bureau of Conscription for the C. S. of A., issued on the 11th instant, and in it name, I do hereby appoint and proclaim Col. Robert V. Richardson as Agent of said Bureau,
in the business of enrollment and conscription; arresting deserters and stragglers, with all the powers confided to persons engaged in the execution of the laws of conscription in West Tennessee—the field of his operations. All white men, who are residents of the Confederate States, between the ages of 18 and 40 years, have been called into the Military service of the army, by the President, and all such, between said ages, at this time, residing in West Tennessee, are hereby required to report immediately to Col. Richardson for enrollment; and they may exercise the privilege of volunteering in any company, before they are enrolled; when, they are entitled to bounty; but if enrolled, they draw no bounty. Hello everybody! Hope you’re all doing well this wonderful week! We are, as I’m sure you all are fully enjoying this uncommon weather! All I can say is "let it be."

Commander of Conscripts KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, JUNE 17, 1863 Fellow-countrymen of West Tennessee: You see from the above proclamation, that I have been appointed Agent of the Bureau of Conscription for West Tennessee. Teya’s, I hope was good, but she had to work; and Zen, I’m sure she and her husband Stephen, had a blast, because she is off! Then we have Ms. Jean Bell’s birthday on the 28th; she is the only one of our residents that has a birthday this month. So happy birthday, Ms. Jean; as always, we hope and pray your day is a special one! A great big thank you to Mr. Tim Bentley for
Partisan Rangers in the counties west of the Big Hatchee (Hatchie), for operations within the enemy’s lines and have unfurled and upheld the banner of the State, and the Confederate States, in these counties, for eight months, against great odds. But God has given us success! I have reported my acts to superior authority, and they have been approved. I am now authorized to increase my forces indefinitely, and to conscript. We who have maintained this unequal contest, need help, and must have it. The noble companies, battalions and regiments of Tennessee in the Regular Army, have been thinned by disease and battle; they need, and must have, recruits. You will soon hear of me in your midst. Then, rally around our banner, bringing such weapons and equipments as you may have, each man furnishing his own horse or mule, if he wants to be mounted— otherwise, he will be placed in the infantry—and let us show to the robber bands of the Despot Lincoln, that we know our rights and how to defend them. and the Encouragers, for y’all brightened their day as well. If you would be willing, we would love to have you come and perform! I would also love to have someone call bingo during the week. We play at McCalla on Sundays, but it would be great to have someone come on a weekday, too. There aren’t as many bingo players as before, since Mr. Kenny left and Ms. Mary doesn’t get out that much anymore. And then there was dear Ms. Madelyn, oh how she loved to play bingo!
And let’s see, there was Ms. Tavie Gray and Mr. Freddie, before his eyes got so bad, but we could probably get a following if we had someone come and get the weekday going. Well folks, guess I’d better call it a night. God be with you all, and bless you and keep you until next week! Love you all so much and thank you all for letting me know you read my column, which is so encouraging. I’m sure the other community writers would agree. God bless!

Charger Beat By STEVE HOLT Covington High School
Another summer has come and gone and the Charger Beat has returned for a 22nd year to bring you all the news from your community high school. Major changes have taken place at CHS since the close of school in May. Let’s take a look. Straight off, CHS said goodbye to its beloved principal, Peggy Barber Murdock. After five successful years, Mrs. Murdock has moved on and taken her skills to the central office as supervisor for all the middle and high schools in the system. She left CHS in great shape. We wish her the best in her new roles. Succeeding Mrs. Murdock in the principalship is a new old face to CHS, Marcus Heaston. He is already off to a running start. Congratulations to him. He needs parents and members of the community to continue to come to the aid of CHS to build on its success. It does take a village. Also, new staff have come on board. Some are academic teachers only and some have dual roles which are in parentheses after their names. We welcome Melissa Barrell, Tamara Buckner, Danielle King, Jason Davenport, Michelle White, CHS grad Jeff Nix (football
assistant, girl’s & boy’s track), Charles Mitchell (boys’ basketball) and Justin Condron (CHS band director). Make them welcome in their new home. The coaching ranks have seen considerable changes as well. In addition to Mitchell and Nix, with the departure of Coach Real, Katrisha Glass takes the reins in girls' hoops. Matt Shearon succeeds Martha Lawler in softball and Nikki Powell assumes the head role in volleyball. Kizzy Young takes on sponsorship of the basketball cheerleaders. In other news, Anna Claire Goforth and Tony Joe Connell brought home a national first place award from HOSA competitions. Haley Johnston received national recognition for her chapter newsletter and Clay max, Daulton Cothran and Sarah Moffett finished in the national top ten in their competitive category. The football cheerleaders received superior ratings in all categories, including first and third place awards in individual categories at camp at UTMartin this summer. Parents take note. Yearbooks are on sale through August for $55. Beginning next month the price will increase $1020. That is all for this week. See you next time on the Charger Beat,

Food pantries fill families’ needs By France Gasquet fgasquet@covingtonleader.com On any given weekday morning, Florence Dyson is unpacking, boxing, giving or delivering food to some Tipton Countians who are down on their luck. Dyson, director of community affairs for St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, used to determine eligibility for food stamps before retiring. She recognizes a need in her community, which is located in a rural area of Covington. “I’m glad we’re here at this location, because we are actually touching people who may be left out (in the Mason area). If we feed someone, they may instead use that money to buy their medication or pay utilities. We are feeding the body and the soul.” In July, the St. Luke food pantry served over 252 families, including delivery to Meadowview and Glendale Commons. “The food bank is mainly to help with emergency needs, however there are so many other needs addressed: medical, psychological. There is a stigma regarding asking for professional help. We do more than give out food,” said Dyson, who noted the pantry has volunteers with more than 120 years experience in social work. The center also has a clothing pantry, open the same hours as the food pantry. When St. Luke first
identified the need, Ms. Dyson asked the River of Life food pantry in Munford for guidance. Jean Geary and Judy Brooks are at the helm at the ROL food pantry, which started in 2002. Over the past 11 years, the ministry has grown from feeding 50 families to anywhere from 400 to 500 families on the third Tuesday of every month, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Mid-South Food Bank brings trucks, and Walmart and Kroger also contribute, through the Feed the People pro-
gram. Criteria for the ROL food pantry is as follows, but not limited to: food stamp eligible, a part of the church family, in subsidized housing, on social security, a veteran and low income. Judy Brooks, codirector of the food bank said, “the need is getting greater. We have some families whose incomes have been cut in half and this service helps them get through the month. It makes a huge difference to them.” The food pantry is
open from 8 a.m.- noon Monday through Friday and is part of the MidSouth Food Bank. Eligibility includes, but is not limited to: food stamp eligible, subsidized housing, or low income. St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church is located at 632 St. Luke Rd, off Hwy. 14 N. in Covington. For more information, call the center at 476-5771 or 476-9746. ROL is located at 220 Beaver Road in Munford. For more information, call 901-837-8781.

The power of God-fearing parents
By Rick Huffman Gilt Edge Church of Christ The Bible class teacher was trying to explain the concept of God to her primary class. She told her class that God is like your own daddy. Before she could elaborate, one small boy began sobbing uncontrollably. She could not understand why. She took him aside and then she understood. She learned the boy was deathly afraid of his father. The father had anger issues. He frequently drank. He was often violent striking his mother, him and his siblings without cause. A young soldier was stationed overseas fighting a war half way around the world. It was his first time away from home and his only family was his widowed mother who worked long hours at menial jobs to keep clothes on their backs, food on the table and a roof over their heads. She was a godly woman who never missed church services. The young man was given furlough with his comrades. They had made plans to go into town to drink their troubles away, fraternize with the local prostitutes and paint the town. The young man reflected often about things back home and would calculate the time back home and what his mom would be doing at a particular moment, cooking supper, doing the chores, at work, etc. As his comrades enticed him to come with them, he remembered it was Sunday back home and his saintly mother would be preparing Sunday lunch and getting ready to go to church services. He turned to his buddies and without any explanation announced, “I’m not going”. Some children do not have a
prayer. They do not have someone who loves them. They do not have a clue what a Christian family is like. They should be able to live a life of innocence and feel safe, of all places, in their own home but they cannot. They do not have any concept of what a real father is like. Eph 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Children should not have to worry about things they have to worry about especially at the hands of their own parents. We, as parents, have a responsibility to provide for our family and the Bible is not talking about cashing a welfare check since the Bible predates such. 1Ti 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 2Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. It is our responsibility as parents to see that our children are also properly nourished spiritually. Matt. 18: 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. 6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Others are so blessed. They have parents that do not send them to worship but take them. They have parents that read the Good Book to them every day. They do not have to be told by
their parents that they are loved because the parents show them every day by making sure the kids are on time to school, that they have their breakfast every morning, that their homework is done because they help the children with it, that they are clean, that they are respectful to not only those in authority but their peers. They have parents who do without so that the children’s needs are met. The Oak Ridge Boys sang a song entitled, “Thank God for Kids”. One line says,”The nearest thing to heaven is a child”. The Lord Jesus Christ concurs. Lu 18:16 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Children are truly a blessing to parents. Ps 127: 3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Children do not ask to be brought into the world. We, parents, owe it to God and to our children train them properly. Pr 22:6 ¶ Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Which parent are we? Would we cause our children to shudder at the mention of God if they thought God were like us? Are we the parent whose example would cause our children to think twice about participating in sin? Doesn’t every child deserve Godloving, God-fearing parents?
