Body of missing man found Funeral to be held in Alabama Thursday By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com

The cars came one-by-one Saturday afternoon, curiosity getting the better of their drivers. They came from Highway 54 East, turned down Cotton Lake Road, and drove slowly to the spot where evidence flags mark the curve that killed Michael Holland Jr. As a slight breeze blew the short stalks of corn in the adjacent fields, passersby stopped, got out of their vehicles and stared into the water-filled ditch where his body was found.

"His bike was over here," one man said, pointing to the west side of the ditch. "His body was up there." He, like many other volunteers, began searching for Holland last Wednesday after he was reported missing. "I drove over this on Thursday, but the water was so high ... it was up there level with the fields." Debris strewn about the banks shows the waterway, a small creek next to the gated entrance of the Cotton Lake

Hunt Club. The water went down Friday and that's when Holland and his 2011 Harley Davidson was found. The three-day search came to an end north of the Covington Municipal Airport, in the Hatchie River bottoms, Friday night, the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office reported. Employed with the Tennessee Valley Authority, Holland was reported missing Thursday after failing to show up for his shift on Wednesday night. He

was last seen and heard from at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday. "It's not something he would do," said Rebecca Holland, the wife of Mike Holland Jr. last week. Rebecca said one of Mike's coworkers called to let her know he didn't arrive. "They called me and I said. 'Just go by the house,' because we don't have a home phone, and he wasn't here," she said. "When I got home at 8, I had no contact with anybody. His SEE HOLLAND, A3

Fighting back against breast cancer

Local woman has double mastectomy, hysterectomy By CHRISTIE JARVIS Special to The Leader

Most people who get involved with Relay for Life do so because they have been affected by cancer in some way. Maybe they've lost their father to the disease or their best friend is battling it now. At this year's event, which will take place Friday night, one team captain is living the Relay for Life "Celebrate. Remember.

Fight Back." motto every day of her life. Kristi Hubbard started the Kristi’s Krusaders team not only to remember her mother but also in celebration as a survivor who is

fighting against the exact same type of breast cancer, called Triple Negative, that took her mom in 2011. Kristi started doing self-breast exams after her mother was diagnosed

in 2011 and on Oct. 9, 2012, while on vacation in Florida, she found a lump. She was staying with her best friend and said she didn't even have the nerve to tell her what she had found until the next day because she was scared; she suspected it was going to be cancer. Kristi made an appointment to see a doctor and schedule a mammogram as soon as she returned home. The call with her diagnosis came in on Oct. 25, 2012. In November, Kristi had a lumpectomy and began her three-month ordeal with chemo in December. It was discovered that Kristi has the BRCA1 gene and had a double mastectomy in April. But that wasn't the end of Kristi's major surgeries this spring. SEE RELAY, A3

Mike, 32, who lived on Highway 14 in the Charleston community, was last seen at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Rebecca said she received text messages until just after 10 a.m. and there was no indication anything was wrong. "What I'm guessing is that, because it was a nice day, he wanted to go out on a ride before work and he planned to come back to pick up his stuff and he didn't make it." He was known to ride rural roads in Tipton and Lauderdale counties, so his co-workers and members of the couple's church, Charleston Baptist, began searching backroads on Thursday. Those volunteers aided the Tipton County Sheriff's Office, Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Shelby County Sheriff's Office and several aircraft in searching for Holland. He was found at approximately 5:50 p.m. Friday night. Skidmarks in the road's curve and the grassy shoulder indicate he may have lost control of the motorcycle while making the turn. FLASHBACK

GUEST OPINION

Some play disability game Many are hailing a 7.5 percent national unemployment rate as a sign that the economy may finally be in recovery, but let’s peel the onion back and see what is at work here. There are those who have finally dropped out of the job search market and live either on savings, a spouse’s income or by some other means. Unfortunately, one of the fastest growing means result from those who play the disability system. President Carter signed legislation to tighten the disability eligibility system following studies showing that able-bodied Americans were increasingly gaming the system, but his administration did nothing to enforce the new rules. In Ronald Reagan’s first year in office, he used the tightened restrictions to get one million people off the rolls. Of course, the Democrats and anti-Reagan media portrayed the new presiJ IM HARDIN dent as heartless toward the disabled. In 1984, Congress sent Reagan legislation, that he unfortunately signed, that loosened the eligibility rules to get on social security disability and redefined what is meant by disability. The 1984 law directed the Social Security Administration to place more weight on a person’s reported pain and discomfort, relax its mental illness screening, consider applicants who have multiple non-severe ailments and give more credence to medical evidence provided by the applicant’s own doctor. When this legislation went into effect, 2.2 percent of Americans were on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). In 2012, that number was 4.2 percent. I have a relative who is clearly capable of working, but has a “back problem,” that prevents her from doing so, so she is on SSDI. She’s a big ole gal and has helped me load some pretty heavy furniture. You can get on SSDI for stressrelated mental health issues and a host of other ailments that don’t really prevent a person from working if they really want to. Every study on this since 1985 has clearly shown a link between economic recession and the number of people going on SSDI. That number has sky-rocketed during the Obama Recession. Assuming the 2.2 percent of the population was all legitimate in 1984, it is not a far stretch to think that the additional 2 percent on the roles are a direct result of the loosening of the eligibility rules, which means unemployment could be 9.5 percent today. Mental health issues for those on SSDI has risen 10 percent since 1984. Back-related pain has increased by 15 percent in the same time. I had an employee who recently retired, had four back surgeries, and clearly was in some pain on many days, but kept working until she was eligible for normal retirement at age 62. I have two other employees who have disabilities who choose to work rather than to live on the taxpayers. I have met a young war veteran who lost his leg in Afghanistan who is going through vocational rehabilitation to learn how to use prosthetic devises so he can work. I am told the many side effects of my cancer treatment may qualify me for SSDI, but I will choose to work, even if it means sitting in a chair to greet at Wal-Mart. Please know that I realize there are many people who are legitimately disabled and not capable of working, but I suspect many on the system can work. Add the millions of Americans who may be milking the federal employee disability retirement system, those few veterans lobbying for questionable 100 percent service connection for that life-time check and medical benefits, those working the worker’s comp system, or those just drawing a check because they are “poor.” I would like to suggest that the most disabling problem many American’s have today is Work Aversion Complex (WAC). It’s root cause is Diminished Work Ethic Disorder (D-WED), which is heavily influenced by Government Looting Taxpayers (GLT). We need more people living by Merle Haggard song “Workin’ Man Blues” that live the line “as long as my two hands are fit to use, I’ll be workin’.” Jim Hardin is a sixth-generation Tennessean and former Republican candidate for the District 81 Tennessee State House of Representatives seat. Retired from the Navy, Hardin writes regularly for The Leader.

Thurman brought his back porch ice pick and punched some holes through the pads and ran the elastic under the arms and measured each boy. Then he took his case pig sticker and cut off the right length and tied the ends in a solid knot. GUEST OPINION

Taking time to remember By TOM VILSACK USDA Secretary This Memorial Day weekend, I hope all Americans took a moment to honor the service of those who have lost their lives defending our nation. America is a beacon of freedom and democracy today, in no small part because of those who throughout history stood in defense of our values and principles. We must also remain united in our commitment to today’s active and reserve service members, our veterans, and their families. At USDA, we understand the special contributions of rural America to our armed services. More than six million veterans live in rural America – and a disproportionate number of today’s service members hail from small towns and rural communities.

Brian Blackley – Publisher/ General Manager bblackley@covingtonleader.com Kathy Griffin - Office Manager Accounting/Public Notices notices@covingtonleader.com News Echo Day – News Editor eday@covingtonleader.com Jeff Ireland – Sports Editor jireland@covingtonleader.com

USDA’s staff across America includes more than 10,000 veterans and our team works hard every day to strengthen services in rural areas that help veterans and their families. This includes everything from health clinics and telemedicine services, to distance learning opportunities and training for those who want to start a farm or ranch. We work closely with other federal agencies, as well as through a partnership with the American Legion, to help get rural veterans the assistance they need to find a job. And I’m proud that today, more than 40 percent of our new hires at USDA are veterans. All of these efforts complement the Joining Forces initiative, led by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, which helps connect service members, veterans

and their families with resources to find jobs. In particular, Joining Forces has played a key role in encouraging U.S. businesses to hire veterans. A few weeks ago, the First Lady announced that since 2011, U.S. companies have hired or trained 290,000 veterans and military spouses. And the private sector has committed to hiring or training 435,000 more by 2018. We owe these efforts to our active duty and reserve service members, to our veterans, and to the memory of those who didn’t come home. This Memorial Day weekend, as we came together to enjoy time with family and friends, I hope everyone took time to honor those who lost their lives in service to our nation. We’ll never forget their sacrifice, and we won’t let up in helping those who have served.

you desire. If this happens, you may need to scale back on these investments and reallocate the money elsewhere. • Diversify — Always look for ways to spread your dollars among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investments. Even within these classes, look for ways to diversify further, such as owning different types of stocks, bonds of varying maturities, and so on. Diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, but it can help reduce the impact of volatility that can occur in a downturn. The Dow at 15,000 is certainly no minor event. And since stocks don’t appear too expensive compared to their earnings, don’t be surprised if higher milestones follow. But record highs can be quickly forgotten when the market falls. By being prepared for that day, too, you can help yourself continue to work toward your goals — even when the major market indices have, for the moment, taken a wrong turn. Locals attend State FFA Convention The 85th annual Tennessee State FFA Convention, held in Gatlinburg from March 24-27, attracted more than 2,000 FFA members from across the state. The convention offered various activities, including career development event contests, motivational speakers, business sessions and opportunities for fellowship with other FFA members. A highlight of the event was the presentation of more than 500 state FFA degrees. The state FFA degree is awarded to students who demonstrate success in their extracurricular activities, agricultural experiences and classroom programs. FFA members from Tipton County were among the group recognized. Members receiving their state

degrees were: Lauren Agcanas, Samantha Beel, Bryson Hambick, Haley Kitselman, Nick Largue, Abbey Lenegar, Jessie Pyland, Shelby Simmons, Elena Smith, Tara Swirka and Paul Wortham from Munford; Katie Brasell, Dezie Gude, Jason Joy, Aerin Langlois, Jeffrey Sartain and Rebecca Wauford from Covington; Haley Anderson, Casey Cothran, Peyton Davis, Chelsea Davis, Brianna Donnell, Luke Kidwell, Justin Parsons, Katelyn Robbins, Chelsea Stephens and Presley Wilson from Brighton. On hand to present these awards were representatives from Farm Credit Mid-America, a perennial sponsor of the state FFA degree program. “These students possess a level of skill and passion that is just

remarkable to see,” said Tim Williams, regional vice president with Farm Credit in Ripley. “A huge part of our mission is developing the future of agriculture and I can’t think of any better way to demonstrate that commitment than supporting the state FFA degree program.” Farm Credit also supports Tennessee FFA through a scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded to FFA members based on activities in their community, school and FFA chapters as well as their academic merit. This year, four students received $500 scholarships and were recognized during the convention, including Tipton County's Elena Smith, who is now attending University of Tennessee.

The Civil War in Tipton County By RUSSELL BAILEY Tipton County Historian William Perry Malone was a 41-year old carpenter and sawmill operator at Leigh’s Chapel when he enlisted in the 7th Tennessee. He wrote the following letter to his brother Robert, which was delivered by Robert Goodman: Camp Starvation, March 5, 1863 Dear Robert: …I have little news that will interest you. The boys are generally well and doing little duty. Our wagons and tents have all been sent below Grenada and we are taking it in the open woods. Our fare is corn bread and blue beef, one meal a day. We have had no news for several days owing to the high water. So far as we can learn all is quiet and we are looking for peace soon. I will send my mule to you as soon as I

Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day! To start things off backward, Sa-lute! I cooked burgers and hot dogs, baked beans and potato salad for lunch (I had to take it to the field). Liz and Lyla joined us, and Lyla spent a good deal of time, until it got too hot, drawing on the driveway with sidewalk chalk, just like Liz and Clint used to do! It is so neat that we still live in the same house they grew up in - we moved around a lot when I was growing up. We had chicken and corn on the cob for supper - great day of grilling! We had an unexpected rain last Tuesday morning and got .85 inches of rain,

Have any more gone off? I have been without money for some time by loaning it to the boys and not drawing any. I borrowed $50 from Rob in Confederate. You will pay him back should he call on you for it and if not give him credit and take up my note. Do not keep no Tennessee or greenbacks on hand more than you have to use for it will not be worth anything in a short time. I have heard some of the boys say that as soon as they get home they never intend on going outside of their plantations again as long as they live. I am agreed of their notion. I think if I can get back again in peace I will be willing to stay at home satisfied for the balance of my days…. William P. and then the expected storm that night with 1.9 inches. Steve Clark sprayed for ants on Wednesday – they were carrying us off! I planted two hydrangeas after he left, and Thursday, John Dycus came and sprayed our yard for weeds, which have been choking our Bermuda grass. We are already seeing results from the spraying. This week's farm report: corn is fertilized for the second time, and we are planting our last field of beans until we harvest some winter wheat in June and plant wheat beans. Everything looks good! I visited with Martha Goulder one day last week and picked up an old Leader she had for me. It was a full page spread of employees from 1975 and it brought back many memories! I showed my picture to Lyla today and she said, "Mama!" Love it!” I appreciate Martha thinking of me

William P. Malone was elected Lieutenant in May 12, 1863. He was wounded in battle at Hernando, Mississippi in 1863, shot by a bullet that hit his chin and went through his neck. A portion of the bullet remained in his neck for the rest of his long life. The wound rendered him unfit for further active field service. William lived to the ripe old age of 90. William became Member No. 19 of the Joe Brown Bivouac, United Confederate Veterans of Covington in 1898. For 65 years he was a member of the Masonic fraternity. His funeral was held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church with burial in R. H. Munford Cemetery.

Maryville scored four times in the inning and that was enough in a 5-2 win that ended Munford's season at 35-11 in the third round of the TSSAA Class AAA State Tournament. Munford appeared to be out of the fourth inning when second baseman Maggie Johnson tagged a runner and looked to be interfered with, which may have prevented a double play. But the runner at first was called safe and a run scored. Maryville (36-13) went on to score three more times in the inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Lindsey Watson. “I hate to blame it on the umpires, but that was a very controversial play,” Munford head coach Glenn Goulder said. “They went on to score after that and it really hurt us.” Munford scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not come all the way back. In the sixth, Tara Comer led off with a double and Peyton Joyner reached on an error. Maddison Welch drove in Comer with a single, but Munford left two runners on base. Comer went the distance for Munford. She struck out three, walked two and allowed seven hits and four earned runs. Sam Scott and Comer each had two hits for Munford. Munford left 11 runners on base. The Lady Cougars made it to the state tournament for the third straight year, despite losing three starters

Brighton's Terry finishes second in two events By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com Several Tipton County athletes qualified for the Spring Fling state championships in Murfreesboro last week in individual events and fared very well. Brighton senior Malcolm Terry Jr. nearly brought home two state titles. He placed second in the triple jump and long jump. His top long jump was a 22-11.75, which put him just 4.75 inches behind the state champ, Phillip Smith of West Creek. In the triple jump, Terry posted a 4603.75, which was just 3.5 inches behind winner Hunter Boone of Science Hill. Caine Robinson, a junior, and senior

Tyler Gray represented Munford in Murfreesboro. Robinson finished fifth in the Class AAA triple jump (44-06.75) and 10th in the high jump (6-02.00). Gray finished eighth in the shot put (46-09.50). Brighton finished 18th in the team competition and Munford took 38th. Munford senior Taylor Patterson capped off a stellar high school career at Munford with her third straight Spring Fling appearance. She gave first round opponent Hannah Schoener of Centennial a battle, but fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Trey Wilson, a senior at Covington, qualified for the shot put in Class A-AA and finished seventh. Churches supplying bread of life By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com

id you know that last Saturday, in the back hall of a Brighton bank, 135 in-need families from Tipton County received food for a week? For the last three years, First United Methodist Church has provided the Bread of Life Outreach ministry in an effort to help alleviate hunger in our community. The outreach has been a blessing to the community. In 2012 alone, 88 tons of food – including meats, vegetables, fruits, milk, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, and bread – was distributed to a monthly average of 1,200 individuals, or 380 households each month. The food pantry is open on the first and third Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. in Covington, and the second and fourth Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. in Brighton. Recipients sign up to receive food as soon as the sheet is posted on Friday night, said Grace Phelps, director of the ministry. They arrive early the next morning, and participate in the worship that is offered at 8:30 a.m. At 9 a.m., the distribution begins. “We use about 25 volunteers during the week to organize and then about 25 on Saturdays. Most volunteers work once a month, so that they don’t burn out,” Phelps said. “We have sign up about a month before the date, and verify the week of either by phone call or email.” The pool of volunteers

comes from a variety of places: from different churches to organizations to people in need who want to give back. During the week, those who have worked behind the scenes have organized foods so that on Saturday the process is as quick and smooth as possible. The recipient is assigned a number during sign up, and waits to be called for input. Once at input, the recipient meets with an outreach counselor to confirm and update all required information. The counselor also prays with the recipient, if requested. Once all information has been updated, the food is either given to the recipient, or taken to his/her vehicle. All in all, it is a smooth process, although due to the high volume of need, the waiting period can take several hours. In Brighton, Trust Company Bank donates the space for the ministry to use two Saturdays a month. Kroger, Sav-aLot, and Wal-Mart supply meat that is nearing its expiration date. The food pantry then freezes it for distribution. “I don’t know what we’d do without their donations. It makes a huge difference,” states Phelps. The Bread of Life outreach ministry is a member agency in the Mid-South Food Bank, a division of a national non-profit food bank network called Feeding America, in order to begin a feeding ministry in Tipton County. Per their website, www. covingtonfumc.com, “Persons who come for food must be Tipton

If they qualify to receive food, they may receive one food distribution per household every 30 days from a Mid-South Food Bank member agency.” The unemployment rate for Tipton County has averaged 11.3 percent the first three

months of 2013. The First Presbyterian of Covington works to compliment the Methodist ministry by supplying food to people in need. Scott Sealy, pastor, explains, “Anyone is welcome. Just come, bring your ID, and fill out a form. The rule is use of the pantry once every six months, but there have been instances when that is waived.” Their food pantry was started in conjunction with the Junior Auxiliary, and is now administered by the church. The hours are from 1p.m.- 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for pickup, and donations anytime. Suggested donations are non-perishables such as box pasta, peanut butter, and canned meats. Broadband Internet access in the rural South is less prevalent than in more populated parts of the country. Many areas still have no Internet access or are dependent on slower, dial-up service. Many content-dense applications and documents are not readily usable due to low transmission capability and speed. Mason retires with win on Beale On May 18 at the New Daisy on Beale Street in Memphis, Covington’s Jere Mason fought for the last time professionally and several local amateurs were also on the card. Mason, Team High Octane head coach and owner of Mason’s Martial Arts in Covington, had billed this MMA fight as his retirement match. Upon arrival, his out-ofstate, 205-pound opponent had the wrong paperwork to fight in Tennessee. The only other professional present was 298-pound Alexis Medina of Kentucky. Mason had the option to either not fight or to fight the super heavyweight opponent who had a combined 13 professional fights between boxing and MMA. Mason decided to fight so as not to disappoint the 150 Covington citizens who had made the trip to support his team. Despite an early boxing onslaught by Medina, Mason’s kicking skill proved to much

for the bigger man. Toward the end of the first round Mason landed a solid jump reverse side kick dropping Medina to the canvas. Mason followed up with an Americana shoulder lock, winning by submission at 4:15 in the first round. Mason now retires undefeated and plans to focus on training his students and achieving mastership in taekwondo, his preferred art. In amateur action. Daniel Byram of Brighton and Ahmad Sanders of Covington both showcased thier jiu-jitsu skill in their submission wrestling match victories. Wesley Ballard and Darian Bradshaw, both of Covington, won their kickboxing matches with first round knockouts of their opponents. After the early showings of Team High Octane’s amateur fighters, Shannon Dye’s opponent took one look at him and decided to leave the building. Dye won by default after his opponent fled the scene.

They lost game two on Wednesday 7-1 to Dickson County, the eventual runner up. “Do I think we could have played better?” Goulder said. “Sure. We had key errors that hurt us. But overall it was a positive experience. The girls gave a good effort.” Just before the bottom of the seventh inning started Wednesday afternoon in Munford's Class AAA State Softball Tournament opening game against Seymour, Goulder was nervous about his team's 1-0 lead. “It's hard to make one run stand up," Goulder said to his assistant coaches. It turned out Goulder had nothing to worry about. Comer retired the first two batters of the inning. The third batter, Kaitlin Atkins, singled to left, breaking up Comer's nohitter. My defense really came through today.” Munford managed just one hit off Seymour pitcher Carly Lewis, but it was all they needed. Freshman Sam Scott made the most of her first state tournament at-bat when she crushed a homer to left field. Lewis retired the next 19 batters, but took the loss. “It was crazy," Scott said about the homer, her third of the season. "I was just like, 'Get far.' When I saw it go out, I was ecstatic. I was really happy. I've heard that pitcher was a good pitcher, so getting that hit was a big deal.” The win was Munford's second in three state tournament appearances. “The young lady we faced was a tremendous pitcher," Goulder said.
