Fugitives captured in Covington By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com Two men who escaped from the West Tennessee State Penitentiary earlier this week now face an additional five years in prison. Minimum custody inmates Ashton Siler, 21, and Dustin Wayman, 20, were captured early Wednesday morning north of Covington by Tipton County deputies. "At about 2:30 a.m., we received information regarding the escapees," said Sheriff Pancho Chumley.

"We combined efforts with the Tennessee Department of Corrections and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. I am pleased that the escapees are back in custody for the safety of the community." The pair was found near a pond north of Leigh's Chapel on the west side of Hwy. 51, just inside of Tipton County. The multijurisdictional search for Siler and Wayman began after the pair fled from custody. "Both were close to being released from prison when

they left," said Tennessee Department of Correction spokesperson Dorinda Carter. Siler was serving an eight-year prison sentence for drug convictions out of Madison County and would have been eligible for parole next year. Wayman was serving a two-year sentence for auto burglary out of Knox County. His sentence was due to expire in January. Siler and Wayman were on the run for two days before being apprehended, but

other escapees have never been found. According to the TDOC website, Chester Manis, who was born in 1926, escaped from the same prison in 1946. If he's still alive, Manis is the fugitive who has been on the run the longest of any other in Tennessee history. He would be 87 years old today. SILER WAYMAN Clifton Carter, who Fugitives Ashton Siler and Dustin Wayman were escaped from Ft. Pillow in apprehended north of Covington early Wednesday 1965, and Edward Gray, morning. who escaped in 1980, are also still missing.

‘You Can't Take it with You’ to open By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com Following a successful run of "The Hobbit," the Ruffin Theater committee is pleased to announce their next big production, "You Can’t Take It With You." Lorraine Birchfield, past director of such favorites as "Miss Minerva and William Green Hill" and "Clue," is directing "You Can’t Take It With You." The original production of the play opened at the Booth Theater on Dec. 14, 1936, and ran for 837 performances, winning the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The comedy has three acts and was written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. In 1938, Jean Arthur, Jimmy Stewart and Lionel Barrymore starred in the movie version; and the film won the Oscar for Best Picture. The play tells the story of a man from a family of rich snobs who becomes engaged to a woman from a good-natured, but decidedly eccentric, family. Performances of this romantic comedy are April 4-6 at 7 p.m. and April 7 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.ruffintheater.org or at the box office. Prices are $10 for adults, $6 for students, military, and senior citizens.

- Jeff Ireland

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: Watch movies. Q: What are some of the most common things that bring juveniles into your office? A: We are seeing an alarming increase in the cases involving alcohol and/or drugs, especially prescription pills. Sexting is also on the rise. We see various types of cases come to juvenile court that range from curfew violations to thefts to aggravated assault and homicide.

Q&A

Q: How often do you think your office is able to turn kids around and how often do you feel like you're banging your head against a wall? A: There is no current tracking device to determine if a child is successful upon leaving the purview of the court. We definitely know if the child is not on the right track when we get a new petition where the juvenile has allegedly committed a new delinquent act. It appears as though our "repeat customers" are on the decline and our first time offenders are on the rise. Based upon this information, we have to assume that we are getting through to the majority of the youth that come before the court.

Q: Tell us about a youth who came through your office and was able to get on the right track? A: There are few folks that come back and tell us that we have helped them. One in particular is a female that recently brought in her three kids to meet me. She reminded me that years ago I placed her into custody and transported her to detention for committing a delinquent act. While we were talking, she told her three kids that she probably would have been dead if I had not "locked her up." It was a turning point in her life. She said that she hated

FLASHBACK

GUEST OPINION

USDA working on economy, poverty By Tom Vilsack USDA Secretary At the U.S. Department of Agriculture we’re working hard to strengthen the economy across rural America – and in recent years, we have seen positive signs of growth. At the same time, we know that areas of high poverty still exist, and many of these are in our small towns and rural communities. In fact, nine out of ten persistent poverty counties in our nation are in rural America. That’s why USDA launched the StrikeForce for Rural Growth and Opportunity initiative. Through StrikeForce, we provide intensive care for communities that suffer from high poverty. USDA identifies areas with over 20 percent poverty for the StrikeForce effort. We join together with communities in these areas that are working to build opportunity for their citizens. Our staff partner with local organizations and civic leaders, providing them with technical support and assistance to help them successfully apply for USDA programs. Since 2010, we’ve piloted the StrikeForce initiative in six states – Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. In these states, USDA has already partnered with more than 400 community based organizations. Now, we are adding ten more. These include the Dakotas, the Carolinas, Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Texas, Utah and Virginia. We have seen positive results from our early efforts. For example, in Strike Force areas, applications for Farm Service Agency direct farm loans were up last year, even as the number of applications nationwide was down slightly. USDA investment in rural community facilities projects doubled. These investments provide a wide range of assistance for small towns – everything from helping improve a rural medical center to providing better access to clean drinking water for rural residents. Our partnerships in StrikeForce areas also helped to increase the number of children receiving healthy meals under USDA’s Summer Food Service Program by more than 800,000. At USDA, we’re dedicated to helping all communities address the challenge of persistent poverty. There’s much yet to be done, but the StrikeForce for Rural Growth and Opportunity is an important step forward. We have created a web page with further information on this effort – available at www. usda.gov/StrikeForce. I would encourage folks to visit, learn more about USDA’s work, and find out how we’re increasing partnership to alleviate poverty across rural America. Tom Vilsack serves as the nation’s 30th Secretary of the Agriculture. As leader of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Vilsack is working hard to strengthen the American agricultural economy, build vibrant rural communities and create new markets for the tremendous innovation of rural America

Maybe someone that has been under a creek bank for a hundred years might think they are mean, cruel and vicious. Not so! Southern gentlemen don’t put up with that mess. Oh well, you might have a little trouble occasionally, but an affectionately well placed, double bit axe handle, called an attitude adjustment, will cure the problems. Now country folks know the Duroc wanted an ear of yellow corn, as she blinked at me with those deer in the headlight, sad chartreuse eyes, ready to bawl like a white face bull. With the sow following me like a dog chases a coon, I shuffled to the corn crib and quickly shucked a couple of fine ears, politely rolling the silk off the kernels. Since Dennis and this Duroc hadn’t been officially introduced, he circled around the stable keeping both eyes on her in case she wanted to dance the Rosemark Hog Trot and become loving friends immediately. Capitol Hill review: A wrap-up of legislative news Governor Bill Haslam announced this week to a Joint Session of the Tennessee General Assembly that he will not expand the state’s Medicaid rolls pursuant to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as ObamaCare. Instead, Haslam plans to independently pursue a “Tennessee Plan” for expanding healthcare coverage to those truly in need. “I believe Tennessee can be a model for what true health care reform looks like; reform that will take significant steps to save the state and the nation from the unsustainable path we are now on,” Haslam said. The central premise of the “Tennessee Plan”, which includes helping insure an additional 175,000 Tennesseans currently in need of health insurance, THE LEADER

Following the announcement, House lawmakers commended the Governor on his decision and praised Haslam for moving forward with a plan to ensure all Tennesseans have access to quality and affordable healthcare without being tied down by federal bureaucracy and mandates. They also praised the Governor for thoroughly researching the issue and approaching it in a thoughtful manner. Continued from A4 provide tax relief to citizens across the state. The package also includes House Bill 193 to reduce the state sales tax on food from 5.25 percent to a flat 5 percent rate. The Hall tax is imposed on income derived from interest on bonds, notes, and stock divi-

dends. Since enactment of the Hall tax in 1929, the use of investment savings has grown as a primary source of retirement income. As such, the legislation approved this week raises the Hall income tax exemption level for citizens age 65 and older from $26,200 to $33,000 for single filers and from $37,000 to $59,000 for joint filers.

your portfolio depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals — there’s no one “correct” asset mix for everyone. And over time, your diversification needs may change. To cite one example, as you enter your retirement years, you may need to increase your percentage of incomeproducing investments while possibly reducing the amount of growth investments you own. These growth-oriented investments tend to be more volatile, and you may want less volatility during your retirement. However, even during retirement, you will need to own a certain percentage of growth investments to provide you with the growth potential you’ll need to stay ahead of inflation. Keep in mind that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Nonetheless, building a diversified portfolio may help take some of the volatility out of investing — so look for diversification opportunities whenever possible.

The action by the Subcommittee builds on Hall tax relief efforts taken in 2011 which raised the exemption level for senior citizens from $16,200 to $26,200 for single filers and from $27,000 to $37,000 for joint filers. In addition to the Hall tax and food tax relief bills, the Governor’s budget provides funds to raise the inheritance

tax exemption level from $1.25 million to $2 million as authorized by Public Chapter 1057, passed by the General Assembly last year. Finally, the budget proposal provides tax relief for low income seniors, veterans, and the disabled by fully funding the growth of the property tax freeze program enacted in 2007.

Cool Tuesday morning with some rain coming in later, and a big chance Thursday. We actually had snow flurries last Monday - be glad when spring really settles in! This week's Farm Report: Got a lot of spraying done last Wednesday and Thursday. Boys are getting antsy about planting some corn. Winter wheat is fertilized, sprayed and looking good. My sincere sympathy goes to the family of A. G. "Jr." Glass, who passed away last week after a long bout with cancer. Joan, Jo Lynn, Willie and

Marlin and all their families are in my prayers in their loss of our fellow farmer and great member of our community. We will miss him and his white truck. Also to the many friends and family of Gaynelle Clay and Ray Isome. We lost two good people during the last week. Two good citizens. Their families are in my prayers. They both fought a long fight. All Lads to Leaders and Leaderettes participants had dress rehearsal Wednesday night and went to the convention last weekend. Brought home a truckload of ribbons and trophies! So proud of them all, and

Dunlap Retirement Center Kathy Keiter

Hello everybody! Well, I trust you all had a wonderful opportunity to go to your place of worship and lift up the Name of Jesus this Easter weekend because He has conquered the grave!!! Yes, He has risen!!! The grave no longer has a hold on Him!! Once again we would like to say thank you to Judy Whetsel and all of her wonderful friends and helpers for putting together the Easter baskets for all the residents! They sure did love them! I don’t take the baskets to the building until midnight, because I want to make sure all of the residents are in bed. I’ve taken things in before late, and there have been a couple people still up

and the “surprise” was ruined, so I decided to wait until midnight! It works for us!! Thank you again Judy and friends, ya’ll are the best!! Ms. Louise Gupton is going to be celebrating a birthday this Saturday, the 6th. Happy birthday Ms. Louise! We love you, dear, and hope you have a great day! Although, we only have the one resident birthday this month, we do have a staff member’s birthday, Darlene Davis, on the 17th of this month! Happy birthday, Darlene! This place will be hopping next Friday night as we will be having our favorite Girl Scout Troop #10107 here for a sleep over. I’m sure they’re all

www.covingtonleader.com their mentors. We had Easter dinner in shifts. Clint had gone turkey hunting in Middle Tennessee on Friday and Justin was in Halls with the ball team, so that night Elizabeth and Lyla came over for chicken and dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans, corn, rolls, carrot cake baked in a bunny pan, and she brought mac and cheese. Well, about an hour before we ate James realized the replacement cow sale in Somerville was at 6 p.m. so he left! We three girls ate and watched "Hunger Games.” Fun! Clint got home Saturday, so I fed him and Courtney Gurley and James leftovers Saturday

night. On Easter Sunday we went out and ate! All this because Liz would be working on Easter at LeBonheur. Worked out though, in the end! Hope all you had a wonderful Easter! In the midst of all that I drove to Atoka Saturday afternoon and saw "The Host" all by myself. I had read the book some time ago and the movie was great! Wouldn't mind seeing it again, maybe Friday night when the church ladies have their dinner and movie night! On our prayer list are Larry Whaley, who has been in the hospital, Larry Whaley II, Ann Chapman, who is waiting on test results and

looking forward to that! They do so much for us every time they come. They also meet here every Monday night. We love having them! Kim Ledbetter is a wonderful leader!! Okay now, everyone needs to remember our “Springfest Fundraiser” on Saturday, May 4th from 10-3. We’ll have wonderful gospel singing; Ms. Patsy Fee’s famous fried pies; and many, many vendors will be here. We will even have a “Pampered Chef” representative! I’m excited!! Anyway, we’ll have our cake auction, which without you, we will not be able to have the cake auction, so if you could, would you please bring a cake to auction off, or if you would rather, a pie or cookies would be great!!!! We will have games for the kids, train

rides down to the “goat pen” and back so you can see our 4 goats!! The babies are no longer babies this year. They were born last year in March, and now they’re almost as big as their Mama & Daddy! Also, if any of you know anyone that would be willing to do face painting, please let me know!!!! That’s a big deal for all the kids, so just let me know, please? Please continue to pray for Ms. Libby Click as she has lost her dearly beloved “Charlie”. Please lift her up to the Lord, she needs our prayers!! Until next week, we still have one room we would like for someone to move into, so keep your ears open for that and tell them about Dunlap! God be with you all!!!

There was a 5K run for on Saturday March 23rd at the Covington Sportsplex to benefit our new building fund. We’ve also been practicing for the Special Olympics, which will be held at Brighton High School on Friday April 12th, 2013. We enjoy going to the Sportsplex because we get some exercise and workout. We’ve had three other trips recently: to WalMart where some of the staff and service recipients purchased some items and worked on money management; to Reelfoot Lake to explore the scenery, go on a picnic, and see the wildlifemost notably Bald Eagles, owls, snakes, turtles, and catfish; and to Cracker Barrel in Memphis to eat lunch and to shop. We have devotions in the front room Monday

through Friday, and enjoy playing Wheel of Fortune and working on the computer in the front room. We also watch DVDs of Barney in there.

We will be out for Good Friday and will reopen on Monday, April 1st, 2013. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

By Russell Bailey Tipton County Historian On March 10, 1863, Col. B. H. Grierson led his Illinois cavalry from Covington to Mason and on into Fayette County. A lady at Portersville wrote her husband in Middle Tennessee: “(Robert V.) Richardson and his men had one of the greatest stampedes from Covington, worse than at Bull Run, more so that it was only a small body of men. The Yanks came very near bagging the whole of them. They can laugh over it for it did appear funny after the danger was over.” One of Richardson’s recruits to escape capture was fifteen-year old George Booth Baskerville of Stanton who had enlisted at Mount Carmel Church March 1st. (Baskerville became a Methodist Minister serving churches at Covington and surrounding communities.) Reports had reached Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston that Col. R. V. Richardson was “guilty of great oppression.” While Richardson was skirmishing with the Federals near Covington, Gen. John C. Pemberton ordered Rich-

These grand babies grow up so fast. In just a few short weeks we will become grandparents again. Danielle will be giving birth to a little boy. As for the week, my mom and I enjoyed a trip to West Memphis, AR. We came back with plenty of Razorback items. On Friday, my mom Connie, sister Callie, my nephew Emery went to Sikeston, MO, and visited Joan and Elaine McClung. The group ate at the Famous Lambert’s Café. On Saturday the Blyue family entertained Emery Dean and Avery Marie with fun and games. Both were very happy and went home with baskets. On Monday, myself, Brian Huffman and Bob Cooley visited those at Covington Manor and Covington

ardson’s arrest to answer the allegations. Captain J. J. Neely was ordered to arrest Richardson and caught up with him at his camp in Shelby County March 19. Richardson refused to be placed under arrest, and with his Partisans and Neely’s company; proceeded to establish camp at the old Wesley Methodist campground near Charleston by the 22d. Richardson led his cavalry into Fayette County where they made a daring train capture between Moscow and Rossville. The Confederates partially burned some of the cars, took twenty Union prisoners and half of the mail from the train. Passing through Oakland and northward toward Belmont, the Confederates were pursued by Lieut. Col. Reuben Loomis and the 6th Illinois Cavalry. Rebel Captain William A. Bell wrote: “On the 28th of March we captured a train on the Memphis and Charleston Road taking 51 prisoners (Some were paroled). On next day…Capt. Burrow and myself were sent out with our companies to check the enemy who was pursuing the prisoners with 400 men under Col. Loomis. (Dur-

ing the skirmish) Our companies were cut off from the Regiment but (we) succeeded in saving the prisoners.” On the Sabbath night of March 29, Adolphis Montague of Fayette and Lt. Colonel John U. Green of Covington located the Federal camp. About midnight, the Partisans attacked the sleeping Yankees at Rives’ Plantation two miles south of Belmont (near Mason). Rebel pistols and shotguns inflicted fifty-two killed and wounded among the men of the 6th Illinois in less than ten minutes. The Confederates lost at least six killed and seven wounded, including Colonel Richardson wounded in the leg and Major B. B. Benson of Braden mortally wounded. Among the dead from Tipton were: John Milton Kelley; 17-year old William Joseph C. McIlwain (buried Mt. Carmel); Lieut. James Calvin Nelson; and James Ralph. A lady at Portersville wrote of the night attack at Rives’: “One Sunday night not long since our cavalry caught them (Yankees) asleep and gave them a worse killing than they will ever admit

SOCCER ROUNDUP

Heads-up play

Cards get past S’wind Four players score for Brighton By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com Despite chilly weather and a steady rain slowing play Tuesday afternoon, the Brighton Cardinal soccer team took care of business against visiting Southwind. Four different Cardinals scored and Brighton scored two second half goals to win going away, 4-2. Giovanni Flores and Jake Marlar each tallied goals in the second half to help Brighton win the nondistrict game and move to 2-1-1 on the season. First-year head coach Bubba Chambers was happy to get the win, but wasn't pleased with his team's effort. “I'm not really happy with the lack of energy,” Chambers said. “We swapped the lineup around and had some kids in different spots.” Zac Ginn got the scoring started in the 10th minute on a goal that was assisted by Dustin Hammer. Late in the half Cody Thompson scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1. The Cardinals return to action today at home against Craigmont at 4:30 p.m. before traveling to Jackson North Side on Tuesday for the District 13-AAA opener. “We played hard, but there was a lack of energy. We played dead out there,” Chambers said. “That's something we can correct.”

Covington senior Bobby Van Cleve gets his head on the ball in between a pair of Haywood players during action Tuesday afternoon in Covington. Covington outshot Haywood 23-5 and Van Cleve scored a goal on an assist from Daniel Joy, but Haywood won 2-1. Covington returns to action today at Dyersburg at 6:30 p.m. Photo by Jeff Ireland

Cougars drop doubleheader to Hardin By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com Munford hosted Hardin County in a doubleheader on Monday, looking for its first district win. The Cougars didn't have much trouble hitting the ball, particularly in the first game, but had trouble pushing runs across and lost both games to fall to 0-4 in District 13-AAA play and 9-9 overall. Munford outhit Hardin County 9-5 in the first game, but the Tigers made three first-inning runs hold up in a 5-1 win. Josh Hibbard led the Cougars' attack with a 3-for-3 day. Ryan Bargery and Ty Gillespie each had two hits for Munford and Tommy Smith and Kyle Hindman each added a single. Hibbard struck out three batters and allowed four runs on three hits in three and a third innings of work. In game two, Stephen Adkisson held Munford to three hits in an 8-1 Hardin County win. Gillespie, Hindman and Smith each singled for the Cougars' only hits. Jesse Charles started on the mound for Munford and took the loss. He struck out two and allowed four earned runs. Munford returns to action Friday at home against Millington and Saturday at Millington before playing at Bolton on Monday. In other action: • Host Dyer County scored a run in the bottom of the seventh last Wednesday to defeat Munford 3-2 in district action.

Bargery led Munford's offense with a 2-for-3 night and drove in one run. Jas Hutchison had Munford's only other hit. Charles and Hunter Barber combined to hold the Choctaws to three hits. • Hutchison homered, doubled and drove in two runs to lead Munford to a 12-5 win over Central last Thursday in Dyersburg. Bargery was 3 for 5 with an RBI and Gillespie doubled twice and drove in a run. Barber, Hindman and Walker Bouler each had two hits and Brandon Young and Hib-

bard had one each. Gillespie pitched four and one third innings and struck out two to earn the win. • Munford fell to host Dyersburg on Thursday, 6-2. Bargery and Ryan

Haynes each singled for Munford's only two hits. Dusty Baker struck out eight for Munford, but took the loss. • Bargery doubled twice and drove in two Friday during an 11-0 win over Humboldt at

Dyersburg High School. Bouler was 3 for 4 with

Lady Chargers playing with a heavy heart By STEVE HOLT sports@covingtonleader.com The Covington Lady Chargers (9-2, 2-1) spilt a pair of games in the past week, but they sustained an even greater loss with the death over the weekend of Gaynell Clay, one of Covington softball’s greatest supporters. “In addition to influencing many girls to play softball, Gaynell was most proud of her granddaughters Autumn, Gabby and

Neely Glenn,” said Covington coach Martha Lawler. “Autumn has graduated and is playing on scholarship at UTM. Gabby is a senior and has signed with UTM. Neely is a CHS freshman.” A special T-shirt has been designed to pay tribute to Gaynell Clay. “It exhibits her special gifts and the strength she showed to fight cancer for 5 years,” Lawler said. “The T-shirts will cost $20 with the proceeds going to CHS softball and to fund a scholarship for a senior player.”

Those interested in purchasing a shirt may contact Coach Lawler at CHS or Brenda Moss at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home. On the field, the Lady Chargers dumped Haywood 17-2 on March 26. Hannah Clifton (4-0) got the win. She allowed six hits, walked one and struck out three. She also had a homer and 3 RBIs to help her cause. Gabby Glenn drove in three. Neely Glenn, Ryleigh Deverell and Laina Gray posted two RBIs each. Obion was not a hospitable host, defeat-

ing CHS 2-1 on March 28. Gabby Glenn (5-2) took the loss. She allowed six hits and struck out three. Jasmine Brown had the lone RBI for Covington. “A couple of errors and a base running mistake hurt us in this one,” Lawler said. CHS hosts Haywood at 6 p.m. today. They will travel to the Southaven Tournament Friday and Saturday and to Ripley on Tuesday.

Covington routs Cordova, falls to Arlington By STEVE HOLT sports@covingtonleader.com Weather played havoc with games again, but Covington managed to get in four of five scheduled games, going 2-2 during the week. The defending Class AAA state champion Arlington Tigers blanked the Chargers 10-0 in six innings on March 25. Covington managed only four hits in the game. Jake Durham took the loss. He

went five innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out six and walking two. The Chargers turned the tables on Tuesday. dispatching the Cordova Wolves 16-2. Carlos Williams and Skylar Ramsey had 3 RBIs each. Tommy Beasley, Bradyn McClain, Brad Walker, T.A. Watson and Dalton Carlton each contributed a pair of RBIs. Walker got the win, allowing four hits and one earned run. He struck out six and walked one.

COMMUNITY HOLY WEEK SERIES Pastor Chuck Williams, left, of First Baptist Church, and The Rev. The series was sponsored by the Ministerial Association. Photos by Echo Day

COMMENTARY

Surrendering to obedience

By EMILY PEYTON COOK Special to The Leader O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past— stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders. For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them— even the children not yet born— and they in turn will teach their own children. So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. Then they will not be like their ancestors— stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God. Psalm 78:1-8 On the heels of Easter, I am challenged ever more to surrender to the obedience of the Lord to go and tell the good news from the outflow of the love Jesus has poured out to me. Living in the Bible Belt it’s easy to assume that most surrounding me know the

Lord or have heard of Him, but that does not excuse me from sharing my faith with others in my church filled community. I think of Jesus and His disciples walking through the streets, putting themselves in the position to minister to those around them, teach, and invite others into the faith. I want to be like them, living with open arms, a open heart, and open hands ready to point others to the saving faith of Christ. I think of family, friends, and Sunday School teachers who were faithful to share Jesus with me week in and week out. Their obedience and diligence set my hope anew on God and I gave my heart to God (Psalm 78:7) in the process. I want to be like them, too. These examples are what inspired the StoryTime on the Square Ministry that started last year and begins a new season this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Park on the Square in Covington. God was calling me to get outside in the public square to put myself in a position to minister to those around me, especially the next generation, through the Word. I

was excited to give kids that VBS feeling all year round and give them sweet memories of learning about Jesus outside the walls of the church and the home. God commands each one of us who know Him and have experienced His grace, mercy, and salvation to go and tell the gospel, so that people won’t have to live in the bondage of their sin anymore. They can be freed of stubbornness, rebellion, unfaithfulness, and hard hearts (Psalm 78:8). If we don’t tell them, who will? Will you pray with me that as we use the Jesus Storybook Bible to share the gospel accounts with the children of Tipton County and the Mid-South the first Saturday of every month, that hearts would be softened to the truth and children and families would be put on the right paths, bringing honor to His Name (Psalm 23:3)? Pray that each person in attendance would be sanctified by the truth, His word is truth (John 17:17). Our hope is that Tipton County can be all that God designed it to be and that we will be a city on a hill burning brightly for all to see and God would be glorified because of faith and action flowing out of our love for Him. Story Time on the Square: Jesus Storybook Bible – Join us Saturday mornings April 6, May 4, June 1, August 3, September 7, and October 5 at 10 a.m. at the Park on the Square, Covington, for music, a New Testament story, games, snacks, and more!

County leaders gathered on Covington's Court Square yesterday morning to kick off April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Courtesy photo

April is Child Abuse Awareness month and the Exchange Club-Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse is trying to make everyone in the community aware. County leaders gathered on Covington's Court Square yesterday morning to read the official proclamation. This year's theme is "Go the extra mile ... It is never crowded." County Commissioner Bob Wilson read the proclamation and Covington Mayor David Gordon closed with a prayer. "We urge all citizens to use this time to better

understand, recognize, and respond to this grievous problem as the center helps our families go the extra mile to prevent abuse," said Nicole Caldwell of the center.
