Alderman charged with sexual assault By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com COVINGTON – A Brighton alderman was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with sexually assaulting minors, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported. Walter E. “Booster” Blalack, 206 E. Woodlawn, was arrested on charges he forcibly fondled
two minors. According to warrants filed in Tipton County, Blalack, who is a real estate agent, is accused of touching the genitals of minors he’d hired to care for properties he was selling. The accusations allege the inappropriate behavior took place on more than one occasion. They also state Blalack forced at least one victim to reciprocate.
The accusations have been under investigation by the TBI and the office of the district attorney. TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm said Blalack was charged with sexual battery by an authority figure, solicitation of a minor, sexual battery and forcible fondling. At press time, city officials could not be reached for com-
ment nor confirmation of Blalack’s time served on the board. He was re-elected in 2008. Officials say Blalack has been released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, May 24. District Attorney General Mike Dunavant said only two victims have come forward in the case. The Leader will report more as details emerge.

SCHOOLS
Testing changes spring break Higher rate of absences reported Monday By TYLER LINDSEY tlindsey@covingtonleader.com It’s that time of year that nearly every student, faculty and staff member and administrator look forward to all year long: spring break. Usually Tipton County citizens can count on having five days off in a row, Monday-Friday, for spring break, but not this year. Tipton County schools were in session on Monday, April 18, the first day of the spring break week. Next Monday, April 25, the break will be concluded as it’s the last day off before school resumes to finish out the year. Buddy Bibb, director of operations of the Tipton County school system, reported that this abnormality in the academic calendar resulted from a change in the dates on which the TCAP examination were to be administered. Last year, the Tennessee Department of Education established a two-week window in which TCAP can be given. After the Tipton County school system established their academic calendar, which included the spring break dates, federal laws changed. Federal laws now dictate more mandatory instructional days prior to the test which caused the TCAP test dates to be rescheduled around a week later. Because of extended mandatory make-up days, school was in session on Monday, April 18, and will be out on Monday, April 25. The staggering of spring break dates into two different weeks seems to have caused a bulge in absentees among the student population. Reportedly, 30 percent of the students in Tipton County schools were absent on Monday. Susan Smith of Atoka has two children at Covington Integrated Arts Academy and two children at Brighton Middle School, only one of which went to school on Monday. “There was no one there. The students who showed up were just kept occupied by the teachers by showing movies. It was ridiculous,” she said. The TCAP testing, however, was said to have been a great success. “We finished TCAP in a timely manner and have it behind us now,” said curriculum director Georgia Dawson.

ith the planned demolition of the former town hall building, tonight a piece of Atoka’s history will soon become a memory of its past. “I would have liked to have saved it,” said mayor Daryl Walker. “Economically, for the taxpayers, this is the best thing.” Located at the corner of Atoka-Munford Avenue and Main Street, the building was constructed in 1928, after the town was destroyed by a tornado, and was originally the Quisenberry Store. The other half, local historians say, was rented by Clyde Wyatt Walker, uncle to former Atoka mayor Charles L. Walker. Home to a post office and polls, the store became the center of city operations 40 years ago. Town Hall moved to its current location, 334 Atoka-Munford Avenue, in the 1990s. The building has been vacant for a number of years and with the town’s centennial celebration approaching, city officials wanted to revive one of its landmarks, turning it into a museum, for instance. COMMUNITY
Project making impact in Munford, Atoka By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com Completing service projects in the south cities, Genesis Church has been making its mark by making love its mission this week. And the church’s Love Now project has certainly made an impact in Tipton County. Inspired by similar projects at other churches, lead pastor Bodie Young said he believed community service should be in the DNA
of his church. “We wanted to be intimately connected to our community,” he said. “No gimmicks, no strings attached.” The church, which began in December 2010, meets at Cineplanet 16. With an estimated 60-70 members – whom they call partners – in attendance each Sunday, the congregation meets in what Young calls a portable church that is centrally located and easy to find.
Its portability supports its vision. “One thing we focus on is being outside the church building so people far from God can experience a new beginning,” said Young. “That’s what ‘genesis’ means.” Since Friday, April 15, Genesis’ partners have hosted a community movie night in Walker Park and community wide barbecues; assisted with Easter egg hunts; fed teachers, police officers and firefight-
ers; and even landscaped an Atoka park. Young said the projects are meant to fulfill needs in the community as well as show the dedication of the church to its community. “If you go into any church, they’ll love on you. They’ll love on you while you’re there. We want to minister to people where they are now, to love them now.” He said the response to the projects has been “unbeSEE LOVE, PAGE A3

School-aged childcare takes spring break to new heights - or, at least, to learn about the airport
S
chool may be out for spring break, but the Tipton County School Age Child Care (SACC) services are still in full force. On Tuesday morning, April 19, the SACC at Atoka Elementary School, at Austin Peay Elementary School and at Crestview Elementary School convened at the Covington Municipal Airport to take a tour of the facilities and learn about airplanes, the physics of flight and the general upkeep involved. “We always look forward to having the kids out to see the airport, said manager Robin Anderson. “They get so excited. It’s good to see them become so interested at a young age. Airport employees showed the group to a hangar which housed a plane and helicopter. The students were wide-eyed as they were able to examine them up close. The next stop was a view into another hangar, that of crop duster Ben Baker of Ben Baker Flyers. One of his familiar yellow planes was pulled out into the taxiing area so the students could look at it. The group was taken to another part of the airport where mechanic Valerie Harris and pilot Bill White gave talks on two different types of airplanes and discussed their capabilities and attributes. Pretty soon the children’s hands shot up with questions waiting to be
answered. “How wide are the wings apart? asked one student. “How far can it fly and when do we eat? asked another. One after the other, students were anxious to learn more about each aircraft (and about lunch). As the children were looking one plane over, linesman Marc Freeman said, “Boy, you can tell it’s taking everything they have not to jump in the pilot seat. True. Excitement and interest were beginning to take over. The staff at the airport wants to extend this interest to everyone in Tipton County. “We always want to encourage all individuals to visit our local airport, said Anderson. “We want to assist you with any of your aviation needs. The Covington Municipal Airport is proudly owned and operated by the city of Covington. The facilities currently house over 60 different aircrafts in hangars fitted for both small planes and larger twin engine planes. The business is a general aviation airport that caters to, but is not limited to, smaller aircraft. The staff also assists in the arrival, care and departure of private business aircrafts. The runway, automatically lit everyday at dusk, is paved with asphalt and measures 5,004 feet in length and is 100 feet wide.
SACC cares for children in Tipton County schools from prekindergarten ages to 12-year-olds. The school system has SACC services at Munford Elementary School, Brighton Elementary School, Crestview Elementary School, Atoka Elementary School, Austin Peay Elementary School and Drummonds Elementary School (students at CIAA and in middle school are bused over after school). “We strive to provide a safe, fun environment for students, said new director Angie Davis. “We think it’s important to also engage students through educational activities. SACC provides care before school as well starting at 6 a.m. and after school until 6 p.m. On all holidays, they offer services from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekdays. Davis says they’re always looking for fun and interesting trips to go on like to the Covington Municipal Airport. “We hope to visit the National Weather Service in Memphis as well as Action News 5 this summer, she said. “We’re going to try and go to a Redbirds game too. Nearly every elementary school has an SACC office. Any parent or guardian interested should pick up an application there.

Continued from A1 But the price tag proved to be a little too much for the city. “I got an engineer in there and he said it was going to be $300,000 to bring it up to code.” In the 1990s, town hall moved to its current location at the corner of Atoka-Munford Avenue and Atoka-McLaughlin Drive. Non-profit thrift shop Tipton Cares moved in and moved out several years ago and the building has remained a vacant eyesore since. No longer structurally sound, bricks are easily removed with a crowbar. Black mold is growingi inside along the south wall and the west wall has been barricaded and surrounded with caution tape for quite some time because it is crooked and falling down.
Despite the attempts to save the old store, Walker said the most economical option for taxpayers is also the most safe: tearing it down. “I was really wanting to keep it,” he said. “It’s a historical part of Atoka, our first city hall, and there’s a lot of history there.” During a final walk-through Tuesday morning, Walker’s wife Jackie, along with centennial committee members Bob McFarland, Shane Waits and Bill Anderson, salvaged memorabilia from the old building: an old door, the old window and its frame, bricks, roof tiles. The Walkers planned to save the bricks for reuse in a memorial planned for Adkison Park, located behind the old store, but didn’t plan on beginning the salvaging process until after demolition. However, when McFarland
Jennifer Easley, FNP-BC Debbie Delones, FNP-BC
and Waits removed the window, bricks loosened too. Using a crowbar to remove the bricks, the group was able to stack hundreds for use as a seat wall in the memorial. “We’d like to put some of this memorabilia up at city hall, add it to the park,” Walker said. At press time, plans were to demolish the building at 10 p.m. on Thursday night. Walker said the time was selected because there would be less volume of traffic on the roadway. Once demolished, the city will lost a portion of the property to the state for a right of way. “Right now we just want to make it safe for people. This will also give a better view of traffic,” said the mayor. “It was the right thing to do.”

Job, career fair planned for April 28 By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com In an effort to inspire students, staff members at the Teen Learning Center/Alternative Learning Center have organized a career and job fair, which will take place next week. After a successful inaugural fair last spring, the center decided to reprise the event on Thursday, April 28. “Any time the community and schools come together it’s very popular, especially in a tough economy,” said Adrian Nathaniel. Teachers and adminis-
trators at the combined centers – which serve students assigned through the courts and school system, respectively – aim to help students realize that mistakes can be made, but can also be overcome. “A lot of these kids don’t see a lot of hope for themselves,” said Steve Zurhellen. “We want to show them that you can lift yourself out of that.” The free event – which is open to adult education recipients, as well as the public – will include vendors from many local businesses, industries and education institutions. Some, like Swift
Trucking, will have applications on-hand. A hospitality room is being sponsored by Gus’s Famous Fried Chicken, Eddie’s Exxon in Mason, both Tipton County McDonald’s and Naifeh’s locations and Covington’s Kroger. Organizers Sherry Taylor and Martha Fayne say the event wouldn’t be possible without the help of local businesses who want to partner with the centers to provide hope for those who may have lost it. Zurhellen said the goal is to expand horizons. “A lot of these want to be police and they

want to be fire,” he said. “Through this they can find out there are different things they can do than run the streets.”
Robbery suspects sought At about 10 a.m. Wednesday, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an armed robbery complaint on Highway 51 at Jack Bennett Road in Brighton. The victim, Tony Hill of the 300 block of Obie Brown Road in Millington was changing a tire in the cross over turning lane when he was approached by two black males (one described as having a beard and tattoos on his arms) who were driving an older model “box” style white Ford LTD. The victim was struck in the head with an object and the robbers made away with his wallet and cash. The victim was treated at the scene and released. Anyone having information in this robbery is asked to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 901-475-3300, Central Dispatch after hours at 901475-4300, phone in tips at 901-475-3007, email tips to sheriff@tiptonco.com.

There is some scary cutting in a graveyard When we were little “tree swingers” and wanted some money jingling in our cut off blue jeans we had to “hire out”. With rocks we carried for our sling shots, or maybe a broken blade knife in case of an emergency, for a “mumble peg” contest, sometimes back pockets were used to haul around all our money. We were fortunate never to require to’ sacks, maybe a Country Gentleman discarded tobacco sack with a draw string. One way to earn money was to cut yards. But, we had to wait our turn as the older boys had the first privilege in the surrounding neighborhood. As the mean boys matured, they located better paying jobs at Millington or all the way in Memphis, if they could get up a load and go together, since usually one vehicle served as a bus. We used the old reel type mowers with a wooden arm as long as a well rope. It seemed back then I had to push and grunt with all I had, just to get any leverage. But we knew better than to complain, as Daddy said, “well, get out there in the field pulling a goose neck, as that won’t be as hard to push.” So to say, that ‘chopped off’ that little problem. The biggest break of our yard cutting career came when we got our turn to cut the graveyard. Oh, they were so big and
and all the kin folk pedigrees. The revered selfappointed Old Testament Sages really got a thrill out of scaring us with tales of ghosts climbing out of graves in a full moon and haunting little boys. Even in the broad open daylight, the Sages reminded us the soon to be squatter, did not like for anyone to watch their new home being dug. As the Sages conversed, we really were ‘skeered’. At that age we started looking over our shoulders and behind us for signs the dead were going to ‘git’ us. If we heard the wind whistling through the trees, we knew it was a ghost following and was ‘gonna git’ us. Watch my backside and I’ll watch yours. We were as jumpy as a June bug in a locked down hen house, full of mad, hungry, long beaked White Rock roosters. Most of all, we certainly didn’t want anyone our age to know we were ‘’skeered’. But, we knew a couple of our friends that were petrified of graveyards, especially at night. So the next best thing is for us to have some fun. I can already hear the “Squeaking Door’ start to slowly open later in the day on the radio. Ghosts and Haints are Really Bad in the Great SOUTH…….GLORY!!!!!!!

A few good men... are you one? The U. S. Marine Corps had a recruiting slogan several years ago. It went something like this, “We are looking for a few good men.” It implied that not everyone was cut out to be a Marine. Not everyone was tough enough. Not everyone was strong enough mentally and physically. In short not everyone was good enough to be a Marine. Just like the U. S. Marines the followers of the Lord are sometimes referred to as military warriors. They are told to “fight the good fight of faith” (I Tim. 6:12) They are told to “put on the whole armour of God” (Eph 6:11) The followers of God are in a totally different kind of war than the Marines. Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places However there are many similarities to the Marines and the Lord’s followers. Not every one is cut out to be a follower of the Lord. Just like the Marines, it takes a lot of discipline, a lot of sacrifice and a lot of self-denial to follow the Lord, a price most are unwilling to pay. The Marines know there are many who could be a good Marine but they are not willing to pay the price. Similarly with following God, all can follow him but few will pay the price. God sent Christ to save everybody but not everybody will be saved. John 3: 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Note that God loved the “world,” every one, and that “whosoever” can be saved, God is clear that His desire is to save everyone. 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is
not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longwwsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. The grim reality is that few will be saved despite God’s efforts to save everyone. Mt. 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. Mat 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. If God wants everyone to be saved, yet few will be saved, wherein lies the problem? The problem is not with God; so it must be with us. Why will most be lost? Because most of us are not willing to pay the price. Remember the rich young ruler who came to Jesus asking how he might obtain eternal life (Mt. 19:16-30, Luke 18:18-30). He was told he lacked only one thing. Only one thing stood between him and salvationhis riches. He loved them more than God. Luke 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. Jesus went on to say it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. What will keep us from salvation? Anything we put before (ahead of) God. God said, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 Only a few will be saved because only a few will give up the sin that

separates them from God. Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Only a few will be saved because their faith is high in rhetoric but short on action. James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. We need to have a little less talk and a lot more action. Jas 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Only a few will be saved because they are following their heart and not the Lord. Sincerity is not enough. Paul admitted this in his persecution of the church. Ac 26:9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Sadly many will not recognize until the judgment day that what they thought was right is not right. Mt. 7: 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. The Lord wants a few good men. Will you be one of them? By Rick Huffman. He is an elder for the Gilt Edge Church of Christ located at 10726 Hwy 59 W, Gilt Edge.

Hi everyone, Well, what’s next? Tornadoes? 40-50 mile-per-hour winds? 40-degree temperatures or 80-degree temperatures? Cloudy days for weeks? Or beautiful sunshine on occasion? We’ve experienced them all in the past six weeks. However, I am so ready for 80-degree temperatures and sunshine daily. Hopefully, it won’t be much longer. My girls and I and my granddaughter Whitney are all about to settle down to reality now that they have accepted their “older” age and our Hot Springs trip is history. Life has a way of getting back to normal very quickly. There are so many tragic things going on around the world and here in the USA, it’s just easier to say I’m too busy to listen to all that stuff. However, any one small thing done out of the kindness of your heart is always a blessing and appreciated probably more than we think. Even a smile sometimes mas a person’s day. K&L Exchange (previously the old Idaville Click Store) will be having an open house this Saturday, April 23 from 2-5 p.m. Speaking of kindness, Mr. Kenny McCain has come up with a terrific idea. There was previously an old bench that sat at the old Click store that will be used as a true blessing. This antique bench has been sanded and stained t be used in the open house. Mr. McCain would love for all who may be interested to come by and sign the old bench. After signing the bench we would love for you to give a donation of whatever amount you may

Greetings, We got more rain and it turned cooler over the weekend, but hey, it's spring and anything's bound to happen! We are deeply in prayer for all of our neighbors surrounding our state, several of which took lives in the balance. When it has never his your front door, never say how lucky you were. Say instead, “You were blessed as I've been.” The Jolly Corteria Club and president Gloria Sherrill will be pulling two winning tickets for the Easter ham give-away this weekend just in time for someone's Easter table. If you didn't buy a ticket for your chance at it, Kroger's got some dandy hams at reasonable prices! President Mary Burton was glad for a nicer turnout on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the weekly missionary meeting. As usual, teacher Willie Mae Burton brought another beautiful lesson. She is proud to see all of the crowd each week. However, recently, one of Jamestown's former residents moved back home from Mississippi, Irene Gaskins Harvey. Welcome home, Irene! The Tipton County Singing Union was held at St. Mark AME church in Munford on April 17 at 6 p.m. President Everlena Winfrey-Sloan was glad to see a nice turnout. Bright Hill's adult choir, featuring, minister of music, Terrence Sherrill and the group as always sang beautifully. Shiloh

CME and Mt. Tipton CME also represented themselves splendidly. The union comes together every three months singing praises to God! Pastor S. P. Cole of Bright Hill delivered a lovely message on Palm Sunday he was pleased to see a nicer turnout. As you know, this Sunday is Easter! As Christians, we are proud to serve a living Savior. We have Genie Renfroe who has had heart surgery and Mr. Kenneth Mason, who has been to church almost regularly with that “grand paw” smile, also Mrs. Shirley Jones and her son, Eric, and so many other. Brother Jim Edmonds is suffering with tremendous dizziness. Brother Jeff Phillips and his son, Beau, and three others from our youth department will be going to Costa Rica on a mission trip. Please keep these and the many other youth from church here in the states who will be joining them in your prayers. In closing, all of our ball players are staying so busy and filling mine and Charlie’s schedules. Of course, now Chase Kidd’s team is in the tournaments and has won five out of seven games. Way to go, Brighton Cardinals. This is the Brighton Middle School’s team. Of course, Matt and Luke Scott stay on the road too and have won several games for Brighton High School. I can’t leave out my little Addie. Their team, the little Blue Belles (who are all so little except Addie and one or two others), is really learning to hit that ball. Before closing, Charlie and I had the opportunity to meet our friends, George and Irene Parker’s daughter, Deena, from Bartlett at McDonald’s last week.; she is a beautiful young lady. Hope you all have a wonderful Easter as we remember the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior.

Hello from Burlison. Plans have changed for the roof on the Town Hall. Someone has come forward and given us a wonderful price for replacing the old roof with a new one. I really think that at this price we can’t go wrong and if this roof will last as long as the first one, which was put on when the building was erected around 1969, we won’t have to worry with the roof again until the year 2053. Relay for Life will be holding a silent auction, bake sale, singing and plate luncheon at the Burlison Community Center on April 30 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with all proceeds benefitting the America Cancer Society. Some of the items up for bid will be tools, gift cards, oil changes, wheel alignments and lamps just to name a few. Plate lunches will be sold for seven dollars each, so come on by, hear some good singing, be the highest bidder and take something home with
you, buy a plate lunch or two so you won’t have to do any cooking. Please remember that these funds will be used to fight cancer and who among us has not been touched by it at some point in our lives. Mrs. Charlene Williams came by the house the other day and dropped off an article about how the tradition of Mother’s Day came about. It seems the quest for a day to honor mothers was started in 1908 due to the affection and dedication of Anna Jarvis. Anna’s mother Ms. Ann Marie Jarvis was a mother to 13 children. She is credited with organizing women’s work clubs, which helped decrease child mortality by educating young mothers. She nursed soldiers during the Civil War on both the Confederate and Union sides and worked tirelessly to settle post-Civil War strife. Anna had often heard her mother say there should be a day to commemorate the hard work women do in caring for their family and others, so upon her mother’s death in 1905, Anna set out to

Hello Dear Readers, This is a busy week at Randolph United Methodist Church. Sunday, April 24, we will have a sunrise worship service out on the hill beneath the large cross. It will be at 6 a.m. We will be having breakfast after the service, a pot luck. Our regular worship services will be at ll a.m. On April 21, Maundy Service at Hopewell at 6 p.m. April 22, Good Friday Services at 6 p.m. at Randolph. May 1, 2011 a wedding shower at 2 p.m. for Marci Mills and Doug. Our homebound focus is Evelyn Griffin. She lives in Covington. Report from the old woman and old man: after two eye surgeries (hole in my eyes) I am supposed to be well. But it bothers me using the computer. We have been busy down at Tunica Lake. We were unable to get to our place for three weeks because of high water. Our son had built a storage area beneath the house. The high water removed the first three layers of the siding. It made a big mess in there. We had stored our outside chairs in it....they were a mess. One wooden chair had removable bottom...we still have not found the wooden seat. We found our big blue garbage can over on the next street. After the waters had gone back in its banks we had a mess to clean up in our yard. We raked and raked and we had a bunch of stuff to burn. Our push lawn mower was not put up, so it was full of water and the spark

make that dream come true. Anna’s efforts soon spread nationwide and by 1909, 45 states had adopted the holiday. In 1914, Congress passed a resolution submitted by Anna to create Mother’s Day, which President Woodrow Wilson approved and now we know how Mother’s Day came to be. Thank you to Mrs. Williams for sharing this with us. I have had several e-mails this week with news from the community and there just isn’t enough room for everything, as we are limited to a certain number of words for each article. I’m going to include only the time sensitive announcements and news in this week and the rest next week. plug was all wet too. So now the grass (weeds} need to be cut. Our next door neighbor had two big trees to wash upon his yard. The water was so high that about 50 motor homes, trailers, boats, were all moved to this side of the levee. But, after we had cleaned up the yard, it really looked good. There was a big cement pad next to our lot....I have been trying to get it cleaned up every since we moved there...well the water washed it off good for me. It was left nice and clean. We had a bunch of house plants. They were almost all dead - with out any water. We had put in a stair lift.... we put it up close to the top, so it is ok Today, Monday, we have been working in our yard here at Elm Grove Road. Our yard is trying to wash away down to the lake behind our house. We have one of those red barn storage buildings and with so much rain we had to put a big water pipe under it today so maybe the supports under it don't wash away!!! We have an acre and a half, so the old man mowed it this week with his big tractor. It only took him one hour and a half to cut it all. So he had to also "weed eat" around the flower beds. I got to use the blower to get up all the trash. We also put down some top soil in the gullies and rearranged some of the bricks we had been using to stop the washing away. Prayers for: Patra Ballard, Lois Conger, Edna Downing, John Downing, Charlene Lott, Paula Hathcock, Zadie Pugh, Mildred Wiseman, Evelyn Griffin and Dale Ferguson. Love & prayers.

Kathy Keiter • 476-7014 Hello everyone! Hope you’re all doing well this beautiful day! I say beautiful because if we are able to wake up and take a breath, it’s a beautiful day!! Or if we’re healthier than our neighbor is, then it’s got to be a greater day than he has. I’m thinking of little Lucy Krull and her Mom and Dad and the change that has taken over their lives, something that they were not warned about, had no idea it was coming and “blast”, it was there! Please folks, remember to pray for Lucy and her family. That’s what the pink and purple ribbons are all about, so when you see one, just say a little prayer for them! Next Tuesday, on the 26th is Ms. Joan Pate’s b’day. Happy b’day Ms. Joan, we love you so much and we hope you have a great day!! Everyone here is accounted for, no one in the hospital! Praise the Lord!!!! Everyone seems to be doing well. That always makes me happy!! It’s like when one of your children are sick; you just don’t feel complete until they get
well again! Please continue to pray for Mr. Max Gibbs. Many of you know Mr. Max and he needs all our prayers. He was able to get a pacemaker put in last week and he is doing well with it! Once again praise the Lord for answered prayer!!! Just to remind you of our wonderful “Springfest” that we’ll be having on Saturday, May 14th. It starts at 10:00am and will go until about 3:00pm. I sure hope you all can come and support us this year! Have fun, eat, and listen to some wonderful music, train rides for the kids, other games for them, face painting, all kinds of things!! Hey, we have a surprise this year, Brighton High School Jazz Band will be here performing and THAT is going to be a real treat!!! We’ll have a cake auction; that is if you are able to bring a cake, but even if you can’t, come anyway and buy one. Ha! You are who we depend on every year to help us stay open. We have 5 rooms that are available right now and when our census is down like that, it makes it unbearable on our budget!!! We will also have something new that we started last year and that is to have an opening ceremony performed by Boy Scout Troop #260 from Brighton!! Featuring Alex Schuetrumpf playing his

We will also be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks for a donation to Dunlap. We’ll even have Ms. Patsy Fee over here frying up some of her famous fried pies hot out of the grease. She’ll have apple and peach and maybe even chocolate ones! Yum! We would like to say thank you to the Diamond Girls who brought all the Easter baskets to our residents this past Monday morning!!! Thank you so much girls!! Also, I would love to tell you about a special treat happening this coming Saturday at the old Idaville Store. They are going to be serving breakfast and there just happens to be an old, old bench that, from what I understand, used to be setting at the old store. Kenny has refurbished it and he will be asking people to sign their names on it for a donation to Dunlap Retirement Center!! Isn’t that awesome??? Have a blessed week, pray for Lucy, do something nice for someone and give a hug!

Community 150 Years Ago: the Civil War in Tipton County By RUSSELL BAILEY Tipton County Historian The brief articles that follow are primary source materials. The first, dated April 22, 1861, describes the first organization of what became Company C, 9th Tennessee Infantry Regiment composed of men from Tipton and Haywood Counties. The second deals with the military oiccupation of Randolph in Tipton County. Each article describes military activities in Tipton County before the State officially seceded from the Union. The occupation of Randolph by Tennessee militia on April 24, 1861 is significant because it was the state of Tennessee's first military action initiated by the governor, during the Civil War. “Mountain Academy (Mt. Carmel) Tipton County, April 22, 1861
Editors (Memphis) Appeal: At a meeting of a small portion of the citizens of Tipton County, at this placem for the purpose of organizing a Volunteer Company, to offer their services to the Governor of Tennessee when she secedes–to the President of the Southern Confederacy–on motion, J. N. Hall was called to the chair, and J. I. Hall appointed secretary. Seventeen names were enrolled and five thousand dollars…subscribed for the equipment of the company, which will soon be complete and ready for active service. –J. N. Hall., Ch'n.” -Memphis Daily Appeal, April 25, 1861, p. 1, col. 1 “Randolph – Fort Wright On the 23 April 1861 (Marcus J. Wright) being in command of the 154th Senior Regiment
of Tennessee Volunteers as lieutenant colonel, Colonel Preston Smith being absent on official business at Montgomery, Ala. I received an order by telegraph from Governor Isham G. Harris to proceed with a portion of my command and the Steuben artillery to some point above Memphis on the Miss. River. I laid this order before the Military Board at Memphis and being furnished by them with means of transportation, subsistence store, etc. I left Memphis at 12 o'clock at night with two companies of Infantry, Light Guards, Capt. Genette and Southern Guards, Captain James Hamilton and the Steuben Artillery and landed at Randolph 60 miles above Memphis about 10 o'clock next morning. The troops were at once encamped and a temporary organization made for the Battalion. (The fort was named for Col. Wright.)”

Gambling charges may prevent beer license it and I wasn't found guilty of that." "But you don't allow gambling in your place anyway, do you," asked Scruggs. "No, sir!" exclaimed Whitley. "The Covington Police always be checking my place and they have been very helpful with me," added Whitley when Scruggs told him he would be checked. "I invite them anytime." But according to the rap sheet provided by the Covington Police Department and included in Whitley's application package, he has had more than 15 charges ranging from speeding to theft over $1,000 and aggravated assault since the early 1990s. In addition to the current charges of gambling promotion, Whitley has had three other charges of promotion of gambling and operating a gambling house brought against him. In December of 1995, he was found guilty of the charge of operating a gambling house. The current charges occurred on July 31, 2010 when officers were called to the Wolf's Den at 122 N. Main St. When officers entered the establishment they observed Whitley, Henry Willingham, Floyd Shepard and Leland Flowers betting money on a card game. The officers observed a dice horn and dice on the table, as well. In addition to the cards, dice and dice horn, officers seized $1,132 from Whitley, $105 from Flowers, $67 from Sheppard and $1,835 from Willingham. As the owner of the nightclub, Whitley was charged with promotion of gambling and Flowers, Sheppard and Willingham were each charged with gambling.
By SHERRI ONORATI Special to The Leader COVINGTON - A business man's application for a Class 2 On Premise Consumption beer license revealed more than just the standard application form and familiar endorsements when it was presented at the City of Covington's beer board on two weeks ago. The meeting began with the customary question being raised by Alderman William Timberlake of the applicant. "I like to ask you if you've read city ordinance on age requirements for the consumption of alcohol?" Timberlake asked. "How are you going to check that?" Applicant C.J. Whitley assured Timberlake and the board he had measures in place to ensure no underage patrons would be allowed in his establishment, known as Wolf's Bigger Den located at 731 N. Main St. "We've got people who will be at the door taking money and checking ages as they come in," said Whitley. Alderman William Scruggs was the first to bring up the surprise addition to Whitley's application package. "You have some pending charges against you for promoting gambling in July 2010," said Scruggs. "You are aware of that I guess." "No sir," answered Whitley surprisingly. "According to what we agreed to in court is that they dissolved the class and I looked up the definition of dissolved and it meant to do away with; put it back together as if it never was. I was charged with gambling but they never did prove
And as far as I know, I have not been convicted of a crime. I have no fine to pay. I was accused but not convicted. - C.J. Whitley Mayor David Gordon asked Whitley if he had any documentation attesting to the dissolution of his case but Whitley responded that he had none. "When they told us we could leave, there was no fine, no court costs, no anything." explained Whitley. "There was an argument - they had confiscated some money and the problem was who that belongs to. We haven't resolved that. But the gambling charge was resolved." City attorney T.D. Forrester told the board that a preliminary look at the city's ordinances did not address the issue of Whitley's eligibility for a beer license. "If that's an issue for the board to consider I'd suggest that we defer this matter until the next board and let me look into it to see if he has pending charges," added Forrester. The mayor then asked Covington Police Chief Bennie Carver if there were any addition information he could provide. "At this time I don't believe they've settled the case on Mr. Whitley," said Carver mentioning that he was awaiting on communication from the attorneys involved. "When I filled out the application, they have on there have you ever been convicted of a crime." said Whitley to the board. "And as far as I know, I have not been convicted of a crime. I have no fine to pay. I was accused but not convicted." Alderman Scruggs voiced his concern that the board should wait to vote on Whitley's application until further
information could be obtained. "It appears to me Mr. Whitley, that there are too many things that are still pending and in my judgement you may not have been convicted but you've made a law run from what I see here, so I make a motion that we defer this to the next board meeting." Speaking to defend himself, Whitley responded by explaining to the board, "If you saw a man with a cigarette lighter standing next to a house and you called the fire department, he could set the house on fire but there's no sense in calling the fire department if he hasn't set it on fire yet." Alderman Tommy Black assured Whitley that delaying the vote on
his application was not a denial. "Alderman Scruggs has made a very appropriate motion," Black said. "C.J., we're not saying we're going to deny it, we're saying we're going to put it off until the next board meeting to see what works out." The motion was made and pass to table Whitley's application for a Class 2 On Premise Consumption beer license until the following beer board meeting on Apr. 26.

POP-UPS AND HOMERS Last weekend, Brighton hosted the Lady Cardinal Fastpitch Invitational, coming away with the trophy after shutting out Arlington 13-0 in the final game. At left, Brighton’s Ali

Lady Cards host, win tourney By JEFF IRELAND Special to The Leader Once a championship trophy is purchased, it’s always nice not to have to give it away to another team. That was the case Saturday afternoon in Brighton as the Lady Cardinals routed Arlington, 13-0, in the final game of the Lady Cardinal Fastpitch Invitational to secure first place in the round robin tournament. Entering the game, Brighton needed to defeat Arlington and give up less than three runs to win the tiebreaker over Covington, which, like Brighton, went 4-0 in the tournament. A strong pitching performance from sophomore Laura Judy and a 10-run second inning was more than enough to make sure that scenario played out. Judy pitched a five-inning one hitter, striking out four and walking just two to move to 12-5 on the season. “I felt like I pitched pretty well,” said Judy, “but it’s really about the defense they played behind me. They
picked me up and I’m really glad to have them.” Brighton’s offense also did a good job in support of Judy, banging out 11 hits. Already leading 3-0, Brighton (199-2) blew the game wide open in the third frame. Freshman Ali Christmas, who finished 3 for 3, had two RBI-singles in the inning and Brea McBride drove in her second and third runs of the game with an RBI-groundout and a single. Maddie Stafford added a double, Britt Sanford, Hadley Wilkens and Megan
McDivitt singled and Laken Jackson hit a three-run homer to left. Brighton lead-off hitter C.J. Jacobs singled and scored in the first inning as eight of Brighton’s nine starters had at least one hit. “I just knew we had to have a good game today,” Christmas said. “I was so proud of her (Jackson) for that homerun. Everybody played great.” Brighton head coach Robin Jacobs was glad to see his team play well during an up-and-down season. “We’ve done this before,” Jacobs said. “We’ll do this one night and then not do it the next … I just hope we can keep it going.” Arlington sophomore Alex Holt (1010) started in the circle and took the loss. She also had the team’s only hit with a two-out single in the fourth. The Lady Tigers fell to 16-14-1 with the loss after going 1-2-1 in the tournament. “Overall I thought we played well until this game,” Arlington coach
Brandon Morgan said. “I don’t know if it was because we had to wait so long to play this game or what. Whatever happened it was embarrassing because that’s not Arlington softball.” Covington (20-3-3) defeated Marion (Ark.) 9-0 in the previous game Saturday to finish second in the tournament. Junior Autumn Glenn (10-2) struck out six and allowed three hits to earn the win. She also tripled and drove in a run. Jasmine Brown and Gabby Glenn also had doubles in the game as the Lady Chargers finished off a perfect run in the tournament. Blaire Colbert, Katie McDermott and Rebekah Millard each had singles for Marion (4-15). Karlie Konrad took the loss. “We hit really well in the tournament,” Covington coach Martha Lawler said. “It’s time for us to do that because the district tournament is two weeks away.”
Chargers fall to 15-6 after loss to MHS By JEFF IRELAND Special to The Leader

s his team came to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning on a chilly and windy afternoon Tuesday, Munford coach Steve Ledford told a group gathered outside the fence what was by that point pretty obvious: “Not a good day to be a pitcher, is it?” With a stiff wind blowing out to leftfield, Munford’s offense took advantage of the conditions with 15 hits and two homeruns in an 11-3 home win over county rival Covington. Munford junior starter Casey Crowe (2-2) pitched well despite the good hitting conditions, allowing just five hits and striking out six in five innings of work. He allowed solo homers to Bobby Bailey in the second inning and Kirk Winberry in the fourth, but stayed out of trouble the rest of the game. “He didn’t give up much,” said Ledford, whose team improved to 13-6 on the season. “One (homerun) was pretty much a bomb and the other was a fly ball that got out of here. With these conditions, he did a great job.” Said Crowe, “I was just trying to keep it low, outside and out of reach.” Munford’s offense got off to a quick start with six runs in the bottom of the first. After Stephen Stewart doubled and Ryan Flake singled to get things started, Dylan Turner drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Josh Reeves singled home another run. Senior Zach Mays capped the inning off with a three-run homer to leftfield. “I was just thinking about getting a base hit,” Mays said. “That’s what coach always tells us to do. Stay back and hit the ball.” Covington junior Tyler Davis (2-1) started on the mound and took his first loss of the season. Blake Caughorn came up with an RBI-sacrifice fly

for Covington in the second inning to cut Munford’s lead to 6-2, But Munford took control of the game in the third, scoring three runs off a Jase Hutchison solo homer and a pair of wild pitches that allowed runners to score from third. Covington fell to 15-6 with the loss. “We played poorly,” Covington coach David Sage said. “We started out the season 13-1, with our only
loss to Arlington.” Since that start, Class 2A Covington has played a strong schedule against larger schools like Collierville and Bolton and some tough out-of-state competition in the USA Classic. “We always play the bigger schools, no excuse there,” Sage said. “You might say we’re having a little bit of a midseason letdown.” MORE SPORTS NEWS CAN BE FOUND ON PAGE A16 ھ

MHS avenges loss to Brighton Munford got a little revenge Monday night in District 13-AAA action. Two weeks after falling to Brighton 11-1, Munford defeated the Lady Cardinals 8-2, leaving both teams tied for first in the district with one loss each. Brighton (19-10) plated two runners in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2, but Munford (214) answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take control. Ashley Hobson and Alex Turner each singled in the sixth for Munford and Maggie Johnson singled in two runs to cap off the inning and make the score 8-2. Paige Barnes picked up the win for Munford, allowing just six hits and retiring the first 11 batters of the game. Hobson and Johnson were each 2 for 2 for Munford. C. J. Hastings to have book signing for second novel ‘Laughter is a great way to relieve tension and put other people at ease’
When Memphis author Robert Hastings goes to a funeral, he usually does so with foreboding. It’s not because he fears death or is insensitive to the atmosphere of a visitation or a cemetery. It’s because he doesn’t want to laugh. “Laughter is a great way to relieve tension and put other people at ease. It alleviates some of the dread. Of course, maybe some things strike me as funny that perhaps wouldn’t be to someone else. But really, I think it’s just that I’m willing to admit it.” The dubious theme of poking fun at death was the genesis of Hastings’s new book, Back When Mary Alice Was Still a Blonde. The writer’s first novel, Three Grapes and a Cold Biscuit, was published in 2008. It told the story of a middle-aged school teacher in 1970s rural Alabama who’s forced into counseling after disgracing herself during an altercation in the faculty lounge (spurned by an insult to her chicken casserole). In the course of the therapy sessions, readers are privy to the kinds of secrets and scandals that seem to have resonated with anyone from–or familiar with– small Southern towns. “Back When Mary Alice Was Still a Blonde is somewhat of a follow-up to Three Grapes in that it shares a setting and a main character. But I didn’t set out to write a sequel, and the new book is its own self-contained
work.” This led the native Southerner to start thinking about death. And what would happen if two contentious sisters who’ve happily avoided each other for years suddenly had to come together to plan their mother’s funeral. “When it comes to death and the entire business of it in the South, our customs and rituals are so entrenched. There’s a lot of material to work with.” Starting with the parade of food people take to the family of the deceased, Hastings explicitly declares the pecan to be ”the official bereavement nut of the South,” and says there can be no closure without a minimum of at least three pecan pies.”And that’s just a good start,” the author insists. From there, launching the story in Mary Alice was much like preparing for a real funeral. “Families have a lot of choices to make when a loved one dies,” Hastings points out, “and there are many details to planning a full visitation and funeral service. I made lists of everything that would need to be decided. And then I imagined what it would be like to debate and defend every choice with someone who’d want the opposite of whatever I chose, right down to the selection of the underclothes to put on the body.” The two sisters in Hastings’ tale might have been under the
impression they would only have to tolerate one another long enough to get their mother buried. but, as it turns out, the real shock may be when they realize they might be in each other’s lives a bit longer than either had planned. Robert Hastings will be at KL Exchange in Atoka on Saturday, April 23 to sign copies of his book in celebration of the store’s grand openeing in their new location. The event begins at 2 p.m. KL Exchange is located at 4704 Atoka-Idaville Road. For more information, call 901-840-4040.
