Interestingly, this work was consigned by a Swedish collector, and there is a biographical label on verso in Swedish as well. 15 Henry Faulkner (American, 1924-1981) Surrealist Mask Bouquet oil on board signed l.r. framed and matted, not under glass 17.5 x 11.75 in. (sight) Henry Faulkner has been the topic of substantial scholarly interest of late, with a recent exhibition at the Governor’s Mansion in Frankfort, KY, and also at Cowan’s Auctions in August of 2013. Henry Faulkner was born in Falling Timber, near Egypt, Kentucky. His flamboyant lifestyle carried him from a traumatic childhood in rural Kentucky through a bohemian existence in New York, Los Angeles, Key West and Sicily. His most pronounced traits—artistry, poetry, reverence for nature, love for animals, his restlessness and disdain for social convention, shaped him from early life. Faulkner was the eccentric rebel who brought his bourbon-drinking goat Alice to parties and exhibitions of his paintings (it was said she could sniff out Kentucky bourbon from across a room). Apart from the obvious striving for attention, his bizarre behavior was the natural expression of an unceasing and unblushing childlike wonder at the world around him, and of an unusual sensitivity to beauty. Information obtained from: Charles House, The Outrageous Life of Henry Faulkner: Portrait of an Appalachian Artist (Knoxville, TN: University of Tennessee Press, 1988). $3,000 - $4,000 16 Henry Faulkner (American, 1924-1981) Geisha oil on panel signed l.r. unframed 16.75 x 11.25 in. 24 George Ames Aldrich (American, 1872-1941) Outstanding Winter Landscape, Probably France oil on canvas signed l.r.; several exhibition labels on verso framed 30 x 35.75 in. (sight) A native of Worcester, Massachusetts, George Ames Aldrich studied in New York and France before making his way west to Chicago and, eventually, South Bend, Indiana in the 1920s. While Aldrich seems not to have spent as much time, nor produced as many paintings, in France as he originally claimed, his time studying the rural landscapes of Normandy and Brittany would inform his painting for decades. Picturesque scenes such as this one, with a focus on water and rural buildings, were particularly popular with the Midwestern collectors who embraced his work. Exhibited: Golden Age of Hoosier Landscape: Ft. Wayne Art Museum, Ft. Wayne, Indiana 3/1-7/31/1984 Regional Impressionism, The Hoosier Salon: Art Center Museum, South Bend, Indiana 11/10-12/31/1979 The Clarence and Mildred Long Collection of Indiana Artists Purchased from Marsh Auction, Oct. 1975 $3,000 - $5,000 25 Will Vawter (American, 1871-1941) New England Coastal Scene oil on board signed l.l. framed 13.25 x 16.25 in. (without pedestal); 62.25 in. (with pedestal) In the artist’s words, this sculpture “symbolizes humanity struggling upward in a spiritual sense.” The figures crawling along the stone column, making their way towards the top, are protected by the hovering winged creature benevolently watching humanity’s “poreia,” the Ancient Greek word for “great journey.” $2,500 - $3,500 61 John Soderberg (American, b. 1951) Steve patinated bronze on wood pedestal fourth quarter 20th century ht. 35.75 in. (without pedestal); 37.5 in. (with pedestal) This life-size sculpture represents the torso of Steve Biko (1946-1977), a South African activist and founder of the Black Consciousness Movement. He died while in police custody and has since been remembered as a prominent figure of the anti-apartheid movement. About the work, Soderberg stated that he “wanted to sculpt the concept of freedom and [...] came to feel that the most effective way was to sculpt its absence.” Accordingly, the sculpture depicts a shackled Biko tied to a pole, holding an open notebook with the following inscription: “Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” The base of the sculpture is in the form of a crushed eagle entangled in barbed wire. This work is part of an edition of 36. $1,000 - $2,000

149 Gorham Mfg. Co. Martelé Punch Bowl and Plateau American (Providence, Rhode Island), 1901. An exceptional Gorham Mfg. Co. Martelé punch bowl and plateau with marine decoration, the bowl having a dramatically undulating and scalloped rim over the body decorated with waves, sea plants and mermen blowing conch shells, all supported by a base of four dolphins, set on a matching plateau of rippling form punctuated by cast female heads, both pieces with Gorham marks on base. Punch bowl marks: to underside of bowl, Shreve, Crump & Low Co. To rim of base, ANN. Plateau marks: to underside, Shreve, Crump & Low Co. To one foot, ANQ. (For complete listing of marks please view this lot at Cowans.com. Photographs of all marks are available upon request). Punch bowl ht. 11 in. (at handle), wd. 18.75 in. (at widest point), plateau wd. 26.25 in. (at widest point), punch bowl wt. 194.566ozt (6051g), plateau wt. 217.942ozt (6778g). The offered bowl and plateau are coded ANN and ANQ and were originally part of a sixteen-piece set which also included two ladles and twelve cups. The set is pictured in Gorham’s Martele Photobook No. 4 (see inset image to right) and in Katharine Morrison McClinton, Collecting American 19th Century Silver, illus. p. 109. While the maker of the set is unknown, both pieces were chased by David Wilmot (1853-1940), one of Gorham’s master chasers. Wilmot was born and trained in London. He was hired by Gorham in 1875 62
COWAN’S FINE AND DECORATIVE ART
and became a United States citizen in 1881. He was one of the most prolific and accomplished chasers at Gorham, and, for a time, was the highest paid worker, excluding the foreman. With the exception of a four-year hiatus in the 1890s, Wilmot spent his entire career with Gorham, retiring in 1925. The punch bowl, plateau and accessories were completed September 30, 1901 and at the time were estimated to have a net price of $1560. The pieces were produced as samples, rather than as special orders, and were intended to be sold through an unspecified retailer. The punch bowl required 100 hours to make and 197 hours to chase. The plateau required seventy-five hours to make and 135 hours to chase. Gorham records note the punch bowl capacity at nineteen pints. The four female heads around the base of the plateau were cast from a bronze mold, a rare example of Martelé not created entirely by hand. The design of the cast heads are similar to those on a Martelé plateau (coded ANR) that accompanies a ewer, both modeled by E. Codman and chased by Robert Bain, another Gorham master chaser. Gorham began its production of the Martelé line in the second half of the 1890s under the direction of chief designer William Christmas Codman (1839-1921). The artistic development of Martelé was both an adoption of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, at the height of its European popularity by the late 1890s, and a conscious effort by Gorham’s design team to create silver pieces that went beyond their utility to become art. Codman focused on the development of highly skilled craftsmen who hammered and chased each piece by hand, leading BID LIVE ONLINE AT BIDSQUARE.COM
to the line’s unique artisanal quality and lending it the name Martelé, coming from the French verb “to hammer.” By late 1897, Martelé was being produced using .950 silver, presumably for its increased malleability. This punch bowl and plateau exemplify Gorham’s synthesis of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. They showcase the artistic virtuosity of the designer and craftsmen responsible for its execution. Cowan’s is grateful to L.J. Pristo, Ph.D. for his assistance on this lot. 391 J.W. Fiske Zinc Recumbant Lions with Extensive Provenance New York, 1870-1874. A pair of male lions cast in zinc, in reclining positions on rectangular bases, one with inscription J.W. Fiske / 99 Chambers St. / New York; larger ht. 24 in., base lg. 39, wd. 13 in.; smaller ht. approx. 22.75 in. J.W. Fiske (1832-1903) was located at 99 Chambers St. in New York City from 1870-1874. This address appearing on one lion indicates that the form went into production while the company was located there. This form was produced into the 20th century as Fiske changed locations and appears also in later catalogs. The lions had previously rested on the front porch of the Chicago Pike Inn, Coldwater, MI, which was built in 1903. The statues have reportedly been at the inn since that time. Prior to this, they were believed to have been a part of the collection of Henry C. Lewis (1820-1884), an art patron and prominent resident of Coldwater. The majority of Lewis’ collection was donated to the University of Michigan in 1895. An 1879 woodcut illustration (shown here) shows the lions prominently resting at the door of Lewis’ famed art gallery and residence in Coldwater. Fiske was a prominent maker of cast iron and zinc garden ornaments, as well as copper weathervanes. His catalogs were exteansively published and broadly distributed, and Henry Lewis likely would have ordered these works (he is believed to have had others resting on the exterior of his home) from Fiske’s shop on Chambers St. Henry C. Lewis was a banker in Coldwater, MI who amassed considerable wealth following the Civil War. His interest in collecting began in the late 1860s, and he collected a remarkable amount of paintings, primarily from a Grand Tour in Europe in 18671868 and also from a single estate auction in New York City. Over 700 paintings were represented in his gallery, and Lewis opened it to the public. His collection was eventually bequeathed to the University of Michigan. It is likely that Lewis, while in New York for a major auction in 1870, put in a significant order with J.W. Fiske at 99 Chambers St. 124

The lions represented here are a rare example. They were the largest size of the recumbant lion, and a later catalog of Fiske’s offerings priced them at $120.00 apiece. Carol A. Grisson, Zinc Sculpture in America, 1850-1950, p. 633. $3,000 - $5,000

Terms and Conditions By registering and bidding in an auction conducted by Cowan’s Auctions, Inc. (“Cowan’s”), bidders (whether present in person, by telephone, by agent, by written or telephone absentee bid instruction, or through a live internet connection) agree to be bound by these terms. These are the complete and only terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. Cowan’s retains the right to bar any bidder from participating in any auction and to exclude or reject any bid. 1) REGISTRATION. All bidders must register their name, permanent street address (no P.O. Boxes), and telephone number prior to the auction. Unless known to Cowan’s, all registrants are required to present two forms of identification, at least one of which must include a current photograph. Bidders may be required to present a valid Visa or MasterCard. By registering with Cowan’s or submitting an absentee bid form, an individual registrant authorizes Cowan’s to obtain a copy of his or her consumer credit report and authorizes Cowan’s, at its sole discretion, to use the information contained therein to make business decisions regarding the registrant’s participation in the bidding process. 2) ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS. Bidding on any item, whether in person, by phone, by absentee bid or via a live internet auction indicates the bidder’s agreement to be bound by these Terms and Conditions for Bidders. Any right of bidder under this agreement shall not be assignable and shall only be enforceable by the original buyer. The rights and obligations of the parties shall be governed by the laws of the state of Ohio. All bidders submit to the personal jurisdiction of the state and federal courts in Ohio. 3) TERMS OF SALE. Announcements made the day of auction take precedence over any previous communication. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot at any time before its final sale and to reject any bid for any reason. The highest bidder for each lot acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the “buyer”. If any dispute arises as to any bidding, or between two or more bidders, at the sole discretion of the auctioneer, the successful bidder will be determined or the disputed lot shall be put up again at the last undisputed bid and resold. 4) BUYER’S PREMIUM. (a) Buyer’s Premium for “Antique and Modern Firearms” auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 15% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (b) Buyer’s Premium for “Fine and Decorative Art”, “Modern Ceramics”, “American Indian and Western Art”, “American History”, “Fine Jewelry and Timepieces” and any other specialized auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 20% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 15% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (c) Buyer’s Premium for online, timed and other third-party bidding platforms may vary. 5) ESTIMATES AND RESERVES. Presale estimates are intended to be guides and may or may not reflect the ultimate hammer price of a lot. Cowan’s retains the right to change estimates on any lot up to time of sale. A reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the seller of the lot and Cowan’s. In the case of reserved lots, the seller has authorized Cowan’s to bid on seller’s behalf until the reserve price is reached. In no case will the reserve be higher than the low presale estimate. Cowan’s standard house reserve on all property at auction is one-half of the low estimate. 6) WARRANTIES AND DISCLAIMERS. Cowan’s makes a limited warranty only to the original buyer of record concerning the authenticity of each lot for a period of 14 days after bidder’s receipt of the purchased lot. If a buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is genuine, the buyer may, at his or her own expense, obtain the opinion of two mutually agreed upon recognized experts in the field of the disputed lot. If these experts determine that the item is not genuine, the buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the rescission of the sale and refund of the amount paid for the item. It is specifically understood and agreed that the rescission of the sale and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy which might otherwise be available as a matter of law or in equity, and such remedy is conditioned upon the buyer returning the property in the same condition as at the time of sale. Cowan’s shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential damages. All sales are final, with no returns or refunds except as provided in this limited warranty. Except as provided in the immediately proceeding paragraph, EVERY LOT IS SOLD “AS IS”, without any representations or warranties by Cowan’s or the seller as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, condition or value of the property, or the correctness or completeness of the catalogue or other description of the property, and no statement, whether written or oral, shall be deemed such a representation, warranty or assumption of liability. Potential bidders may also reserve a phone line on Cowan’s website. If faxing or emailing requests for phone bidding, they need to be in Cowan’s office 2 hours before the sale begins. Once the auction begins, requests left on Cowan’s website may not be retrieved by the staff. • Telephone bidders are advised to indicate an “insurance bid”, which amount will become an absentee bid, pursuant to the absentee bidding process set forth above, if Cowan’s can not reach the bidder by telephone for a particular indicated lot. • Telephone bidders must disable any caller ID or other call blocking mechanism. • Cowan’s sells about 100 lots per hour, so telephone bidders should plan accordingly. Cowan’s will attempt to reach each telephone bidder, but Cowan’s is in no way responsible for missed calls. 11) INTERNET BIDDING. Internet bidding is available through our website; additionally, Cowan’s may post certain auctions on Bidsquare (bidsquare.com) or Proxibid (proxibid.com). There may be terms which apply solely to internet bids that should be reviewed online at the time of sale. Cowan’s is not responsible for any failure to execute a bid and shall have no liability to any bidder for any technical or other failure associated with an internet auction. 12) BIDDING INCREMENTS. The following increments are used at the auction. Absentee bids must fall within these increments. Cowan’s will automatically reduce any absentee bid to the closest increment if the bid falls outside the published range of increments. For Bids Falling Between Bidding Increment $0-500 $25 $501-1,000 $50 $1,001-3,000 $100 $3,001-5,000 $250 $5,001 and up $500 or at the discretion of the auctioneer Cowan’s reserves the right to modify increments at any time during the auction. AFTER THE AUCTION 13) BUYER’S RESPONSIBILITY. Upon the fall of the hammer, title to the offered lot shall pass to the buyer and the buyer immediately (a) assumes full risk and responsibility for the lot, including liability for loss or damage and (b) is liable for payment of the Purchase Price (as defined below) to Cowan’s. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ask specific questions on condition related concerns prior to the auction. Cowan’s will not rescind sales with buyers that have disputes regarding firearm’s bore condition. 14) PURCHASE PRICE AND PAYMENT. The discounted “Purchase Price” for each lot shall equal the hammer price, buyer’s premium, sales tax and, if applicable, all packing, handling, insurance and shipping costs. Payment may be made with cash, personal or traveler’s check or credit card. Cowan’s reserves the right to hold a purchased lot until a check has cleared. A convenience fee of $15.00 will be assessed to all transactions made in the alternate payment channels: Phone payments are made available as a convenience outside Cowan’s Auctions customary payment channels, therefore these payments are qualified as payments made in the alternative payment channel. All forms of payment made using this method will be assessed the convenience fee. Please call Cowan’s Auctions if you have any questions regarding this policy. PLEASE NOTE: A surcharge of 2% will be assessed to all credit card transactions. This surcharge is not greater than our cost of acceptance. Buyers who are present at the auction must pay the full Purchase Price at the time of the sale. Buyers who bid by telephone or who are absentee bidders will be invoiced within 5 days after the close of the auction and must pay the full Purchase Price for each purchased lot within 14 days after the date of the auction. By signing the absentee bid form or placing a bid by telephone, an absentee bidder authorizes Cowan’s to charge the Purchase Price for each lot for which such bidder is the successful bidder to the credit card number provided by telephone or on the absentee bid form, unless payment in full or alternative payment instruction is received within 14 days after the date of the auction. No property will be released by Cowan’s unless the Purchase Price has been paid in full. Institutional billing may be available, and should be arranged prior to the auction. Cowan’s may impose late charges of 1.5% per month (or the highest interest rate allowed) on any amount owed to Cowan’s that remains unpaid after 30 days. Buyer shall be liable for any collection costs or attorney’s fees incurred by Cowan’s to collect payment, to the extent permitted by law. 15) SALES TAX. Buyers are required to pay any applicable state and local sales tax. 16) SHIPPING. At the request of the buyer, Cowan’s will authorize the shipment of purchased items usually within two weeks after payment has been received. Shipment is generally made via UPS or Fed-Ex Ground. Unless buyer gives special instructions, the shipping method shall be at the sole discretion Cowan’s Auctions. Cowan’s is in no way responsible for the acts or omissions of independent handlers, packers or shippers of purchased items or for any loss, damage or delay from the packing or shipping of any property. ADVICE TO INTERNATIONAL BUYERS. Cowan’s will not ship any package containing a firearm to any location other than within the United States. Buyers outside the United States must make their own shipping arrangements taking full risk for the transportation of any firearm. Property made of or containing certain plant or animal materials, such as coral, crocodile, ivory, whalebone, baleen, tortoiseshell, etc., may require a license or certificate before exportation from the United States and importation to another country. If you are purchasing items that contain these materials, you need to check the government wildlife import requirements in the countries from which and to which the item is being shipped prior to bidding. Since the export and import licenses are independently issued by the countries of origin and destination, obtaining one does not guarantee that you can obtain the other. Purchasers are responsible for making timely payments on items won at auction, even if a license is delayed or denied. 17) SHIPPING CHARGES. Buyers are required to pay for all packing, shipping and insurance charges. Overseas duty charges are the responsibility of the successful bidder. Be aware that for larger and/or valuable items, shipping charges can be substantial. 18) REMOVAL AND STORAGE OF PROPERTY. If purchased property has not been removed, or Cowan’s has not received shipping instructions within 21 days after the auction date, a $10 per item per day storage fee may be charged to the buyer. 19) CANCELLATION OF SALE. If purchased property remains in the custody of Cowan’s for a period of 60 days following the auction, Cowan’s may, at its option, cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages any payments made by the buyer, or resell the property at auction or by any other commercially reasonable means, for the account and at the risk of the buyer, and in such event, buyer shall be liable for the payment of all deficiencies plus all of Cowan’s costs, including but not limited to storage and costs of both sales. This right of cancellation is in addition to any and all other remedies available to Cowan’s.
