WELCOME ROAD TO THE HORSE ✯ 2024 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Welcome to Road to the Horse!
e’re thrilled to be in the Bluegrass State and proud to provide the remuda for Road to the Horse 2024, the World Championship of Colt Starting.
I have been blessed to be the General Manager at Pitchfork Ranch since 2011.
As one of the great American working ranches, horses have been pivotal in building the Pitchfork Ranch. Horses have been a huge part of the ranch since it began in 1883, and that passion continues today.
As a dedicated breeder of American Quarter Horses, it is our goal at the Pitchfork Ranch to produce the world’s best ranch horse, one that is versatile, intelligent, attractive and strong. We are honored to have the chance to bring our 2021 foal crop to horsemanship’s most coveted event, where we can highlight our breeding program and the horses we love so much.
n the Wild ard hallenge presented by Platinum Performance you ll see a selection of Pitchfork Ranch fillies. hese fillies are the result of generations of careful breeding and are our top future broodmare prospects. The geldings in the Championship Remuda are a colorful mix of prospects who will be used on the ranch, and some will go on to pursue performance careers across disciplines, such as cutting, reined cow horse, ranch versatility and roping.
Road to the Horse sends a strong message, showcasing what is possible when partnerships are built on trust and not fear, and that parallels not only our equine program but our overall ranch philosophy. With over 140 years of continuous operation, the Pitchfork Ranch was built on a solid foundation that has stood the test of time.
We hope you enjoy the event and the horses that proudly wear the Pitchfork Ranch brand. We are excited to give our horses their time to shine in the spotlight, and we can’t wait to watch their journey unfold.
Thank you to Morris Communications Company, LLC, and the Road to the Horse crew and fans for welcoming us to this prestigious event. We look forward to sharing our passion for the horse with you.

ROAD TO THE HORSE ✯ 2024 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Though an avid lover of all animals, horses have dominated Lindsey Patterson’s heart and soul. With more than a decade of riding and training for her successful business, Beyond The Bit, Lindsey has seen and done it all. Lindsey’s training career began when she met her mentor and friend, Brandi Lyons. Having completed both of Brandi’s intensive trainer certification programs and subsequently working for Brandi as an assistant trainer, she has traveled across the country, engaging in horsemanship clinics, expos and demonstrations. Unlike many other successful trainers, Lindsey did not grow up with horses; however, her natural athleticism was a match for the challenge. Lindsey spent much of her youth winning multiple state championship titles in gymnastics and track and field and even set the New Hampshire state record in pole vaulting at 16. Her love of animals drove her to pursue a degree in animal science at Cornell University. Time spent working on a ranch in Wyoming proved to be a life-changing experience for Lindsey. At that moment, she understood and appreciated the incredible intelligence and connection that can be created with horses and decided to follow her passion. Lindsey started her business out in Wyoming since it catered to her love of the outdoors, mountains and Western lifestyle. Lindsey specializes in colt starting and problem horses but works with all-level riders and horses. In 2022, she returned to New Hampshire, and Beyond The Bit is now stationed in Freedom, New Hampshire.

WILD CARD
Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, watching John Wayne movies with his dad fueled John Baar’s fire to become a cowboy — a fire that would grow into a passion for understanding the horse and learning how they think, learn and interact. This passion sent John on the search for education from Masters in the colt starting and equine psychology arena. He spent time with Martin Black and Ray Hunt, learning the art of colt starting and quickly jumped on the opportunity to study at an International Horse-Man-Ship University with Pat Parelli — his current Pen Wrangler and Mentor. The education Pat shared through his Horse-Man-Ship program laid a foundation for John to build his understanding of the art of colt starting. The foundation has proved a solid base to build multi-discipline horse training from, creating well-rounded horses and horsemen. Through hard work and dedication, John turned this “summer school” program into a 10-year educational career, including not only horse training and development but also a deep dive into human learning and education. John taught people from all over the globe and earned the campus faculty leader position, guiding a team of 10 instructors while monitoring the progress of 80 students on campus. During this time, John was also in charge of heading the horse expo team to present the Parelli concepts worldwide. This experience opened the door to John’s current career, allowing him to build on what he learned from a decade focused on understanding horses and humans as learners in addition to international travel and sharing the nature of the horse regardless of differences in breed, age or purpose. Alongside his wife, Kathy, John opened Raising The Baar Horsemanship Center in Kentucky.

“I have been incredibly blessed in my life to be surrounded by some of the best horsemen and women in our industry. And without hesitation, I would put Lindsey Patterson next to all of them. A student is defined as an attentive and systematic observer. She is a true student of the horse. That is exactly what Lindsey has done with her horsemanship. Mike Major | Road to the Horse 2022 and 2023 World Champion
Mike was raised as the son of a cattleman, Buddy Major, and grew up pushing cattle, match racing and competing in rodeos across New Mexico, Arizona and southern Colorado. Mike competed on the rodeo scene in both rough stock and timed events, where he specialized in bull riding and team roping, and later entered the cutting horse scene. The opportunity of a lifetime came up in the early 1990s when Mike purchased the Flying A Ranch in Fowler, Colorado, and found himself running 550 cows and growing his band of ranch horses, including a few mares and three studs: Bright Mito Bars, Joys Double Feature and Leovada Chic. He continued to team rope as ranching allowed but focused on growing his cattle herd and running the ranch. Although horses are a huge part of the Majors’ operations, the ranch is a working cattle ranch. Every year, Mike operates a large yearling cattle operation on the Flying A Ranch and the Rio Puerco Ranch in Belen, New Mexico, and enjoys training his own and client’s horses in Bowie, Texas, where he continues to see success in both the American Quarter Horse Association and Stock Horse of Texas show arenas. Mike Major is a two-time Road to the Horse World Champion (2022 and 2023).

They don’t have fights. Lindsey is a warrior. Don’t get me wrong, she can fight! She just won’t fight the wrong opponent. She is not out here for herself. She is out for the horse. Loyal to the horse. Like the sun, she is more than capable of shining out there on her own.“ — Brandi Lyons

“C.D. and I have started a lot of colts together. It’s always been fun to discuss the strategies and different methods, and I have always felt that we have both walked away with a lot more knowledge on what each horse needs to succeed. C.D. understands that to connect with a horse and help that horse learn, it’s not through force, it’s by developing that horse’s understanding. ROAD TO THE HORSE
Donal grew up in a remote part of Australia on a cattle station known as Saddlers Springs, where riding was as necessary as walking. From moving cattle, boundary riding and crossing land inaccessible by any other means, horses were a tool used for work and not much else. It wasn’t until Donal was 19 that the idea of training horses or riding for pleasure even entered his mind. A chance audition led him to his start at Australian Outback Spectacular, where he was introduced to a new world of working with horses — one that opened his eyes to the true capability of horses and started a hunger in him that continues to this day. Double Dan Horsemanship offered Donal the opportunity of a lifetime, taking him on as an apprentice and allowing him the chance to travel and work in America. This experience led Donal to specialize in liberty and theatrical equine performance. Upon returning to Australia, Donal founded Hancock Horsemanship. Amongst colt starting and restarting and excelling in the education of horses, Donal has been involved in multiple equine entertainment shows, TV appearances and music videos, as well as competing in several colt start competitions, including the TEQ Trainers Challenge in 2017 and representing Australia in the New Zealand Equitana The Way of the Horse Colt Starting Challenge in 2019. Donal is a respected colt starter, trainer and clinician. Traveling around Australia, offering clinics in horsemanship and liberty, he has also begun branching out into cow events and continues to expand his knowledge.

A lifelong cowboy with strong family values, commitment to patriotism and faith in Christ, Ken McNabb grew up in a traditional ranching community in the mountains of Wyoming. At 16 years old, Ken knew this was absolutely his true calling. Since then, he has been changing people’s lives through his weekly television show, “Discovering the Horseman Within,” airing on RFD-TV and The Rural Channel; social media platforms; nationwide clinics; three-week apprenticeship programs and special appearances at large expos. He still carries the passion and conviction he had as a young boy. Living his life on horseback has proven to be the ultimate way for Ken to reach out to people and their horses. In 2013, Ken received the Telly Award for an educational program called “A Day in the Life of a Rancher.” Ken is known for creating a unique environment where each horse is trained using gentle methods, and the rider is coached to become their best. Ken often tells folks to “Dream like a kid and ride like a cowboy.” Ken’s faith in Christ and his commitment to strong family values and patriotism help make him the kind of speaker people truly enjoy and connect with. Ken’s other passions have always been ranching and livestock production. In 2009, Ken partnered with Diamond Land & Livestock of Douglas, Wyoming, to host the first-ever Diamond-McNabb Ranch Horse Sale. The sale is now working towards its 16th year. Together, Ken and his wife, DeeDee, with their two sons, Kurt and Trent, live in Lovell, Wyoming, at the base of the Bighorn Mountains, where they are dedicated as a family to teaching others to dream bigger, ride taller and live happier.

SCORING AND FORMAT
The scoring system works on a basis of 0 to 5 points, which increase in half-point increments. With the 0 to 5 scoring scale, judges will mark a competitor on individual scoring elements throughout the rounds based on 0 being the lowest level of difficulty and 5 being the highest. Those scores for each individual scoring element will then be tallied and totaled at the end of each round of competition.
The Wild Card Challenge and the Championship competition are scored under the same criteria. The Wild Card Challenge will not have a complete obstacle course in the finals, in the best interest of the fillies, due to the condensed format.
In Rounds 1 and 2, all competitors will be judged on 20 categories: catching and haltering, saddling preparation, saddling, introduction of rider, obstacle preparation, groundwork, general interaction, timing-reward and release, forward motion, willingness to guide/steer, progression of the colt’s softness-yields to pressure, clarity of message, overall horsemanship — reading of the colt, clinician’s conduct/demeanor, clinician’s confidence and understanding, clinician’s ability to build confidence in the colt, clinician’s ability to adjust to the colt’s needs, clinicians ability to build a solid foundation, appropriate use of pen wrangler, and the colt’s demeanor at the end of the session.
The final round is comprised of four components: saddling pen, rail work, obstacle course and overall riding.

No matter the discipline, a young horse must have a solid foundation to succeed, both on the ground and under saddle. To learn more, we asked our Road to the Horse 2024 competitors our top colt starting questions.
DONAL HANCOCK:
Describe the importance of a colt having a solid start under saddle. It comes down to one short answer: They only get one start. A horse may forgive, but they don’t forget, so it’s important that the colt starting process is solid and well done. What is the most important lesson you want a colt to understand?
I want a colt to look to me for leadership when I’m working with them. What do you love about starting colts?
like the result as it confirms that everything you have done with that colt has been correct. When colts start riding well, you know you have given them a right start; that’s the proof. What do you tell yourself when you climb into the saddle to give a colt their first ride?
For me, it’s about relaxing. You can’t climb into the saddle
expecting the colt to do something wrong. It’s all about riding the colt and seeing what he presents to you. What do you want to see from a colt before hopping on for a first ride?
I want soft, relaxed and willing groundwork. I also long rein my colts a lot, so I want that direction. I’m looking for everything I look for under saddle, so all they must get used to is my weight when I climb into the saddle.
Do you see a difference between how colts are started in the USA and Australia?
I feel it is quite similar. Every horse we have is different. I don’t feel the countries are separate in their approach to colt starting.
What is the most important element to horsemanship success?
It sounds cliché, but to go all the way with horses, you must love them and love what you’re doing. It can get hard and emotional, but if you don’t have empathy for the animal, it’s so hard to understand them.
42 ROAD TO THE HORSE ✯ 2024 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COLT STARTING 101
KEN MCNABB:
Describe the importance of groundwork. Groundwork is where your relationship with your horse starts, and trust is developed. It’s where understanding is achieved.
What is the biggest mistake you see students make when they are starting colts?
When a student develops a level of animosity between them and the colt. You never want a spirit of “I’m going to make you,” but instead, you must keep a team mentality. You may be the team captain, but you and your horse should always be on the same team.
What advantage do you have starting colts on a large ranch?
The advantage is we can take colts out of the round pen and immediately pique their curiosity by giving them the space to learn and explore in a brand-new setting. It gives them the ability to learn naturally as their surroundings change, and it teaches them to control their emotions. In an arena, the process can get stale, and it’s harder to make lessons interesting.
TIK MAYNARD:
Describe the importance of a colt having a solid start under saddle.
The most obvious answer is the things a horse can do physically — those things that keep them and the rider safe, such as wearing a saddle, walking, trotting and cantering. The more important, deeper answer is that the foundation is based on them being confident learners. They must be relaxed and able to focus either on the person or the task at hand.
Describe the joy of being able to take a colt on their first ride hat first ride is like going do n a steep double-hill black diamond fresh powder skiing run that you’re equally excited and nervous about.
Does starting a colt in an English discipline differ from starting one who will have a Western performance career?
I’ve often thought the beginning is very similar but ould say after that first week, there is a fork in the road gradually guiding them through skills to shape their eventual career.
Are there any differences in starting colts across different breeds?
The biggest differences come from the perspective of simply how you do things — how you interact with a 14 hands-high horse versus an 18 hands-high horse, or how much “whoa or go” they have.
What do you want to see from a colt before hopping on for a first ride?
It’s impossible for boredom and fear to coexist. I want to see my young horses bored with the saddle and bored with me stepping on. When he shows me that he’s bored with the process, I know we’re ready to move on.
What is the best way to give a colt confidence?
y horses gain confidence because if they try, then I reward them. Everyone develops confidence from success. he more times the colt realizes that trying releases pressure and leads to success, the more their confidence ill build.
How advanced do you feel a rider must be before starting their first colt?
person s confidence le el is probably more important than their actual ability to ride. I try to recommend my students be very comfortable riding, but I really ant them to be confident around horses.
What is a lesson you learned starting colts that you wish you had learned earlier?
I wish I understood the value of the release of pressure much sooner in my life.
I’ve seen different stereotypes between different horse breeds, but every horse is so unique, even within their breed. What breed have you had the most fun starting?
Since I found out I’d be competing at RTTH, I’ve started more Quarter Horses than ever before, and I’ve had more fun than I’ve ever had in my entire life. Partly because of the horses and partly because I’m going out of my way to work with other trainers who are talented with Quarter Horses, like Glenn Stewart and Jake Biernbaum. o do o create confidence in a colt where he will be willing to tackle fences as an eventing sport horse?
During the beginning stages of starting a colt, we teach them to go over, under, onto and through things. This idea of going over something, whether it’s a small log on a trail ride or a single rail in the arena, is something we just gradually build on until they ha e the confidence to o ercome any obstacle.
At what point in their training do you start introducing your eventing sport horses to obstacles or jumps?
I can begin introducing jumps, banks, ater and rails ithin the first couple of weeks. I’ll start them jumping on a lead rope rather than with me on their back. This allows them to think about the jump itself rather than both the jump and me at the same time.

ROAD TO THE HORSE
CHAMPIONSHIP
From Horsemanship to e Highway and Every ing in Between
The Road to the Horse 2024 Wild Card and Championship competitors are each accomplished leaders in their individual disciplines. We took the time to get to know them a little bit more, both in and out of the arena.
DONAL HANCOCK:
What attracted you to training liberty horses?
There is a physical and mental side to training horses, and liberty demonstrates the mental side of training and the ability of the horse to take on responsibility.
How do you deal with pressure in the competitive arena?
I listen to a lot of podcasts from athletes, but the one thing that is going to help you is going to multiple competitions and learning through those experiences. You must learn in what state you do your best work and then work on maintaining that energy.
TIK MAYNARD:
Describe your overall horsemanship philosophy.
I almost hate to say what it is at this moment because a year from now, it will be different. The biggest aspect of my horsemanship philosophy is that it’s still evolving. What is the equestrian accomplishment you are most proud of?
How was it different to author a book about horses, and what did you learn from that process?
I have been able to share my equestrian lifestyle with both my family while growing up in Vancouver and now with my wife and kids. What is it like to train horses alongside your wife and family?
It’s absolutely perfect. It’s what I’m happiest and most comfortable doing.
What is the most common question you get asked about life in Australia?
There are a lot! I get a lot of questions about Crocodile Dundee and the Crocodile Hunter. One of the better questions I had was, “How long does it take to drive to Australia?” That’s not a common one, but it was one of the funny ones.
What is the biggest myth about Australians?
That everyone dresses like Crocodile Dundee and that we wrestle snakes and crocodiles — most Australians aren’t that brave!
Where is the most beautiful place you’ve ever ridden?
In Australia, it’s the Northern Territory, and in America, it was starting colts in the snow in Montana.
KEN MCNABB
You’re driving down the highway — what music is playing in your truck?
I learned the importance of words and how I speak and write. Being able to recognize the difference between saying, “I made the horse back up,” versus “I asked the horse to back up.” Writing gi es me the ability to re ect on ho to think through things systematically rather than just relying on feel and experience — like trying to break down the steps to back a horse up to someone who has never worked with a horse before.
Are you more nervous when you are showing yourself or when your wife is in the show pen?
I’d say it’s equal in different ways.
everyone in our family is broke.” We stick together, and we might disagree, but we’re there for each other no matter what.
This one always shocks everybody. I listen to a big variety, but Celtic Thunder most often. What values has ranch life taught your children?
Honesty, integrity and the value of hard work. What does family mean to you?
In my opinion, it’s the second most important thing in the world. First is faith in the Lord, and then my family. You want to be able to count on friends, but you should always be able to count on family. My family has a saying: “Nobody is broke until
Name a horse throughout history that you would love to ride.
Man O’War. I believe the truly great horses have fire in the furnace. an War bucked off his warmup jockey at every race except the one race he lost. He was a remarkable performer.
Describe the joy of watching horsemanship students’ progress.
When you’re working with a student who really has a deep desire and is willing to pour themselves into what they are doing, it’s such a joy.
ROAD TO THE HORSE ✯ 2024 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 4 HORSEMANSHIP
LINDSEY PATTERSON:
a e fi e ite s that are al a s in o r horse trailer tack room.
A lariat rope, a dressage whip, a bridle with a d-ring sna e bit dri ing lines and etrolin hine. What is your favorite horse color?
Blue roan, for sure.
efining o ent that dro e o r horsemanship journey?
I wouldn’t say it’s a moment, but a period of time. t as hen first started my training business and started training colts in Wyoming after going through Brandi’s program, being able to execute the skills I’d learned.
What attracted you to horses?
The trainability of horses and that connection
you can have with a horse. I didn’t grow up around horses so the first summer spent on a dude ranch in Wyoming was when I was first ama ed at ho you could take these ama ing animals and teach them something. What do you feel is the biggest challenge to people improving their horsemanship? I think the biggest challenge is when our minds get in the way. It’s about having the mindset to execute an exercise and follow through on the process ithout fear or lack of confidence getting in the way.
What do you do for fun with your personal horses?
Trail rides would be my fun thing, especially riding in the Wyoming mountains.
JOHN BAAR:
What was so inspiring about the Western movies you watched as a child?
Watching those movies growing up in Colorado, I always wanted to be a cowboy. Cowboys always have horses, so living that cowboy lifestyle meant getting into horses.
escribe o rself in fi e ords Passionate, patient, understanding, driven and inquisitive.
What is one equine discipline you haven’t tried but would love to?
I would enjoy the heck out of competing in three-day eventing. If they ever got rid of breeches and let guys wear jeans, I’d probably be an eventer.
C.D. WILCOX:
Describe the experience of assisting Mike Major as his Pen Wrangler at Road to the Horse World. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It wasn’t something I expected to happen, so I was very honored to go and win it twice with him. It’s something I’ll always remember. What do you tell yourself as you walk into the competition arena?
I always tell myself to do my best with what I have. If you’re there to do the best you can, you’ll come out on top. Remember your practice and stick to what works. Are you a superstitious competitor?
I used to be through high school and college,
ho has been the biggest in ence in your horsemanship journey? he biggest in uencer is definitely Pat Parelli. I started my Parelli journey doing home study in 1998, and I’ve been with Pat for almost 20 years as one of his instructors.
What is a lesson you learned starting colts that you wish you had learned earlier?
That it’s okay to work outside the box, try new things and don’t get too stuck into one method.
like lucky saddle pads, tack etc., and I always chewed Juicy Fruit bubble gum. I have gradually yielded away from that. Showing horses takes all day now, and I just can’t chew gum that long! What is one item in your tack room that you have way too much of?
Parts and pieces of broken bridles. I have saved a lot of pieces of broken tack to use again for a rainy day, but I have more than I need!
What are the biggest lessons teaching horsemanship college students has taught you?
I have come to understand that people learn and hear you differently. I’ve had to learn how to explain the same thing in different ways where everyone understands.

Road to the Horse fans have been fortunate to witness both legends and future superstars from around the globe compete for the title. Supporters and competitors alike have shared the challenges, heartaches and triumphs that such a challenge creates. Road to the Horse has awarded 14 World Championships across three states, totaling over $1.5 million in prize money. Competitors from five countries have been represented in the competition and approximately 215 colts have galloped in the running of the Remuda. There are two ladies who have claimed World Championship titles: Stacy Westfall and Vicki Wilson.
