HE ROOT OF IT STORY BY KARI KYLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRENT LIN & JAMES WANG

E

VERYBODY LOVES A GOOD SUCCESS STORY. You know - the little guy with a dream, against all odds, and succeeding? What many don’t realize or fail to see is that most businesses are built on the back of hard work, a solid foundation, and core values. There is no magic or easy way. I was honoured when asked to write an article about Cowell Auto Group, as it truly is a present day success story, and I spent quite a bit of time contemplating on how best to write the article. I called up my dad to get his insight. I explained how Gary Cowell grew his automotive company over the past 45 years from just four staff and one Volkswagen dealership, to almost 200 staff and four dealerships - Cowell Volkswagen, Audi of Richmond, Land Rover of Richmond and Jaguar Richmond; making it the longest running dealer group in Richmond and one of the oldest continuously owned and operated in Metro Vancouver. I also told him that I was impressed by how Gary always stuck to his core values and passed these values down to his sons Rand and Ryan, who now run the day-to-day operations of their successful company. However, I confessed to my dad that I was unsure as to how to communicate to the readers of the article the depth of Cowell Auto Group’s business acumen, but at the same time, the pureness and simplicity of their business model based on key core values. My dad, was silent for a moment, and then said, “Write about a tree.” “Huh?” I replied.

“Hmmm….okay dad, thanks for the tip,” I laughed, and hung up. I sat in front of my computer, and thought about this advice

When Gary Cowell was in his twenties he had a vision to open a car dealership - he planted the seed, and in December 1967 he opened his first dealership selling Volkswagens. The roots grew deep, and the business flourished. This is definitely not the norm in the automotive industry, but as Cowell Auto Group continues to grow and branch out, they want to ensure that they don’t dilute the customer experience. 2015 AUDI A3 BY TREVOR HOFMANN, CANADIAN AUTO PRESS

Wearing all of Audi’s newest design details, the 2015 A3 sedan makes a sporty statement. Its singleframe grille is more sharply angled than the outgoing model, wedgeshaped headlamps edgier, and large air intakes aggressive. AllLED headlights and taillights will be optional. The new A3 is a true compact, measuring 4.46 metres long with a 2.64-metre wheelbase. Small dimensions make for better maneuverability, but its interior is nevertheless spacious with room for five plus a large 425L trunk. True to Audi’s tradition of contemporary design the interior is

clean and devoid of clutter. Audi’s excellent MMI infotainment system features a seven-inch display that automatically rises out of the instrument panel. The A3 offers a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engines and one clean diesel. Entry-level models feature a 1.8L unit with 180-hp and 185 lbft of torque powering the front or four wheels via optional Quattro AWD. This model’s preliminary fuel economy rating is 5.6 L/100km combined city/highway. The second choice is a 2.0L four with 211-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque plus standard Quattro, while the 150-hp TDI makes 236 lb-ft of

torque, powers the front wheels and gets a preliminary rating of 4.1 L/100km combined, partly due to automatic start-stop. All engines use a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic. Upscale options include radarbased adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, and park-assist with surround-view camera. The 2015 Audi A3 sedan goes on sale in April next year, followed by the even sportier 296-hp S3. The five-door Sportback will return too, with an ultra-thrifty e-tron plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

SMART ENERGY CHO SAVINGS FOR THE MO STORY BY CHELSEA WATT PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUBERT KANG

HERE ARE MANY GOOD REASONS to save energy around your home: you save money on your bills, reduce waste and you ease your environmental impact. But going on an “energy diet” doesn’t mean sacrificing your taste and sense of style. Advances in technology and design mean that you can make Power Smart choices throughout your home to bring a modern, energy-efficient space to life.

information to make decisions that affect your electricity use and costs.

The number of electronics and small appliances used in every household has risen steadily over the past few decades. Making smarter choices when buying electronics and appliances can save you money and energy, all while keeping you on trend with the latest gadgets. Thanks to new meters which offer updated data about your energy use, you can get a better handle on how much electricity you’re consuming, and use that

But not all energy-saving lights or fixtures are created equal. To ensure you’re getting the best option and a quality product, always look for the ENERGY STAR® label. These products have been tested to meet energy efficiency, operating, and reliability criteria.

BRIGHT LIGHTS OFFER BRIGHTER CHOICES Energy-efficient lighting has advanced greatly, allowing you to light your space without affecting ambience and comfort. LEDs and CFLs provide the best opportunity to save energy and are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes and functions.

When choosing new lighting, you have plenty of options. Get the help of a lighting designer to help decide where to place fixtures for

And choosing ENERGY STAR lamps or fixtures, not just bulbs, will help make sure you’re maximizing your energy savings. If you’re trying to choose between types of bulbs, LEDs are generally more expensive, but the prices continue to drop as the technology advances. ENERGY STAR LED bulbs last a minimum of 25,000 hours compared to incandescent bulbs which last about 1,000 hours. The longer life helps offset the higher upfront costs for LEDs. MORE ELECTRONICS MEANS WE’RE USING MORE ENERGY THAN EVER New developments in home theatres and mobile devices have brought more electronics to our home than ever before. And those electronics are using more power than they used to: the average screen size of a television has increased by 50 per cent since 1970.

Standby power draws power 24 hours. Cut standby power by using smart strips to power off electronics when they're not in use.

Making smart choices with your electronics can make a difference. In fact, electronics can account for as much as 10% of your electricity bill. Much of that cost comes from standby power, or power that’s being drawn 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Today, the average Canadian household has 25 or more electronics in the home, many of these use standby power. Standby power is used to power features like timers, clocks and recordings. That always-on capability costs you. A single HD personal video recorder (PVR or set-top box) uses about 70% of its electricity in standby power. Using smart power strips helps cut down on standby power. They let you turn off power to some items, such as game consoles, while electronics like PVRs that need power remain on. Unplugging chargers and other electronics whenever you’re not using them can also help.

The average Canadian household has 25 or more electronics in the home. When you are in the market for new electronics, choose the most efficient ENERGY STAR® models. Televisions identified with Power Smart messaging are ENERGY STAR models that use at least 30 per cent less energy than their counterparts. Visit bchydro.com/televisions to find a list of the most energy efficient ENERGY STAR televisions available. ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES OFFER SLEEK, ENERGY-SAVING STYLE Some of the biggest energy users in any home are major appliances like refrigerators and electric clothes dryers. If you’re planning to replace your refrigerator, freezer, clothes washer or dishwasher, choose the most energy efficient ENERGY STAR appliance. They offer top performance and major energy and water savings without sacrificing function and style. Visit bchydro.com/appliances to find a list of the most energy efficient ENERGY STAR appliances available.

FOCUS | 2013

Even if you’re not ready to replace your appliances, you can ensure that you’re using them wisely to avoid wasting energy:

20

Set your fridge and freezer to their most energy-efficient settings — just cold enough, but not too cold. For fridges, that’s 2 - 3°C (35 - 37°F); for freezers, it’s minus 18°C (0°F).

Resist the urge to smell your brownies baking. Every time you open your oven door, you lose about 20 per cent of the oven’s heat. Look through the oven window instead.

Run your dishwasher with a full load only. Skip the heat-dry setting and let your dishes air-dry, or use the economy or energy-saving settings.

Wash your clothes in cold water. About 90 per cent of the energy your washer consumes goes to heating water. If you wash with cold water, you’ll save that energy, and your clothes will come out just as clean.

USE DATA TO FIND THE TIPS THAT WORK FOR YOU How can you manage what you don’t measure? If you’ve made investments into energy-efficient products, you’ll want to know if they make a difference. Thankfully, tracking how much electricity you’re using just got easier. New online conservation tools give you access to your usage data, right up to an hourly level. You can see the spikes where you’re using more electricity and access Power Smart tips to help reduce your usage. You can even compare your electricity consumption to the temperature outside or similar homes to see how you’re doing. Get started by creating a MyHydro Profile and linking your BC Hydro account at bchydro.com/myhydro. If you’re not already on the team, join Team Power Smart at bchydro. com/jointheteam and activate a challenge: reduce your electricity use by 10 percent over a 12 month period and you could earn a monetary reward. Choose the most energy efficient ENERGY STAR appliance. They offer top performance and major energy and water savings.

Log in to MyHydro regularly to track your progress. It’s a great way to see how much electricity you’re consuming and stay on track with your conservation goals.

POWER SMART CHOICES CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

If everyone in B.C. chose qualifying ENERGY STAR® appliances, we'd save enough energy to power over 250 community swimming pools for a year.

If everyone in B.C. turned off just one unnecessary light when they left the room, we’d save enough energy to charge 8.6 million smartphones for a year.

If everyone in B.C. hung one load of laundry to dry once a week for a year, we’d save enough energy to brew over 877 million pots of coffee.

If everyone in B.C. swapped four hours of TV for four hours of outdoor recreation, we'd save enough energy to power the Whistler Blackcomb Peak to Peak Gondola for over 81,000 days.

It’s a totally different feel from any other Jetta, too.

BEETLEMANIA: VOLKSWAGEN’S 2013 SPECIAL EDITIONS STORY BY MATT SINCLAIR

I

T’S BEEN 75 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST VW Beetles made cultural history. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the prototypical ‘peoples’ car’ became the most enduring platform in the history of automotive manufacturing. 2012 saw a brand new revision, styled with a lean edge of sporting aggression, a sleek sheet of blank canvas that has been begging for some splashy treatments. So, as a 21st century celebration of this 20th century icon’s birthday, we can think of no better present than these dynamic special editions.

FOCUS | 2013

Offering broad diversity in character and price point, this ‘fab four’ comprises the country-rambling romance of the Convertible, and the audio sophistication of the Fender. For those seeking a unique retro experience, there’s the GSR. And finally there’s VW’s latest implementation of the hallowed Super Beetle, if the challenge of decision-making behooves you to demand the best of everything.

24

The Convertible’s fabric roof raises or lowers in ten seconds, folding deftly away under a tonneau cover to resemble a baby spoiler. When unfurled, its curved geometry echoes the classic hardtop silhouette. Carefully considering safety, VW implanted two automatic roll bars behind the rear seats, also strengthening the chassis’ A pillar. Under the hood, a full range of engine options await: a 170hp 2.5L, a 200-hp 2L TSI, and an efficiency-exacting 2.0L TDI that’s lighter on horsepower – 140 – but cranks out a supreme 236 lb-ft of torque. For the musically inclined, the German auto giant reached across the Atlantic

to collaborate with California-founded guitar and amplifier legend Fender, whose devotees include Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and George Harrison. Packing eight speakers and a subwoofer worthy of a Norse god’s thunderous wrath, Fender’s premium audio system has been designed specifically for the Beetle’s cabin. Winning a CNET tech award, the depth and clarity of this system cannot fail to astound. And for the more visually oriented, the Stratocaster-inspired sunburst dash and Fender badging, as well as the 18” disc alloy wheels, will leave no doubt which classy car that music is coming from.

well: VW is only making 3500 this time around too.

The Super Beetle is that best-of-all-worlds you long ago stopped believing was possible, yet, the elements speak for themselves with scientific accuracy. First, take the most aggressive of the powerplants, the 2.0L TFSI 4-cylinder, packing 210-hp of primal energy. Then roll it into the most tricked out interior available, with an R-line styling package of two-tone black and red, panorama sunroof, and 19” alloy rims that will get you respectful nods from your local street racing community. Finally, steal the Fender audio The GSR, or Gelb Schwarzer Renner (‘Yellow system lock, stock and barrel; you have the

This car’s distinct appearance and unique backstory offer something collectible the moment it drives off the lot. Inside, the sophisticated R-line appearance package elevates the driving experience, with three auxiliary gauges adorning the dash, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel that gives a distinctly sporting feel. Then there’s the performance. Kicking out 210-hp from its turbocharged 2.0L powerplant, the GSR hits 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. 2014 TIGUAN R-LINE BY TREVOR HOFMANN, CANADIAN AUTO PRESS

olkswagen bridges the gap between mainstream and premium better than any other brand, and the compact Tiguan crossover is a fine example. VW’s LED lighting-enhanced contemporary exterior styling is mirrored by a clean, uncluttered interior design comprised of highgrade materials. Ergonomics are first-rate, all buttons, knobs and switches best in class, and the feature set of my top-tier Highline tester was truly upscale.

26

Chocolate brown perforated leather seats and trim, perforated leather-wrapped sport multifunction steering wheel, brushed aluminum accents, full-colour infotainment with navigation and Dynaudio stereo, Bluetooth handsfree, dual-zone automatic climate control, panoramic glass sunroof, and the list goes on and on. But it’s the way the Tiguan drives that truly sets it apart.

Planted, secure and confidence inspiring, the Tiguan tracks like a much larger crossover utility, begging to be driven faster than the posted limit no matter the road. Bred for the autobahn, it takes to BC highways with ease, and when passing is required the Tiguan’s turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder digs deep with 200-hp and 207 lb-ft of torque for a rush forward few rivals can match. It truly shines when the road starts to wind, the Tiguan’s fully independent suspension remaining flat and true even at high-speed, especially with my tester’s firmer sport-tuned R-Line suspension. It almost makes you forget you’re driving a car rated

at 12.0 L/100km city, 7.7 highway. Most important in this class, the Tiguan is practical. With 700L of cargo space in back and 1,600L when the 60/40 rear seatbacks are folded flat, there’s plenty of gear toting room, plus a flip-down centre pass-through will take a family of four and their skis up the mountain. In the depths of winter, the Tiguan’s 200-mm ground clearance joins VW’s 4Motion allwheel drive to make light work of heavy snow. Pricing starts at only $24,990.

365 DAYS OF DINING IN RICHMOND

STORY BY LINDSAY ANDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSAY ANDERSON

I

N JUNE 2012, I BEGAN A UNIQUE JOB: eating at 365 Richmond restaurants in 365 days, and writing about each and every one. Over the course of this daily dining adventure I got to explore the city’s diverse neighbourhoods, met some wonderful and inspiring characters, and took full advantage of my free pass to the Richmond Oval. Above all, I ate a heck of a lot of food. When I first began this adventure, the prospect of exploring the Richmond food scene was both exciting and intimidating; I didn’t yet know the community, I was unfamiliar with the Asian cuisine Richmond is famous for, and I’d never really been in the public eye. I therefore approached the whole thing as though I was student, and Richmond was my classroom. The more I ate, the more I learned, and I enthusiastically asked questions of readers and Richmondites. My understanding of Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese cuisines has grown immensely, and thanks to my Richmond Oval membership, my waistline has not! I literally tried hundreds of different dishes, many of which were quickly added to my Official List of Favourite Foods. From banh mi to pizza, xiao long bao to Persian kebabs, I found that Richmond offered never-ending options for me to explore, and I was still discovering new places during the last week. Sometimes I dined with friends, sometimes I dined alone, and no matter where I was, I always felt comfortable.

One of the incredible perks of this job was the non-food adventuring around town I did. I cycled around Richmond’s agricultural heartland; explored every inch of Steveston; went spot prawn fishing and whale-watching; visited a Buddhist Monastery; jumped for hours at Extreme Air Park; enjoyed live theatre, and much, much more. I came to realize that within Richmond, one can visit many different countries, and you need only to hop on the Canada Line to ‘get away,’ not an airplane. Here are five of my favourite restaurant experiences, and I genuinely hope you’ll have a chance to visit some of them yourselves. If you can do nothing else, make sure you get to Lido and ask for a fresh pineapple bun.

LINDSAY'S TOP FIVE RICHMOND RESTAURANT EXPERIENCES

1

SUHANG RESTAURANT #100 - 8291 Ackroyd Road, Richmond BC | 604.278.7787 EXPERIENCE: BEGGAR'S CHICKEN Experiencing this signature dish requires some planning (it must be ordered the day ahead), but it is well worth it. You’ll get to enjoy a whole chicken stuffed with sticky rice, egg yolks, edamame beans, water chestnuts, and soya sauce that’s been tightly wrapped in lotus leaves, encased in bread dough, and baked in the oven. When finished, the impressive dish is paraded to the table and cracked open. The chicken is unbelievably tender, the filling is sticky and flavourful, and almost any other dish you have at Suhang is guaranteed to be good.

2

KIRIRI JAPANESE CUISINE & SUSHI BAR 8780 Blundell Road, Richmond BC | 778.297.4330 sushiinrichmondbc.com EXPERIENCE: MISO BLACK COD After 365 days, I can still confidently say that the miso black cod at Kiriri is the single greatest thing I tasted all year. It was simple, pure, and buttery, and I have not stopped thinking about it since Day 120. Their sushi rolls, sashimi, and organic mixed mushroom salad were also phenomenal, and I’d certainly recommend Kiriri as a place to try some original and refined Japanese dishes.

EXPERIENCE: FISH & CHIPS On a hot summer’s day in Steveston, getting fish and chips is a must. There are a number of options, but the village’s two famous rivals are Dave’s and Pajo’s. Dave’s is extremely popular with the locals, and has dine-in options as well as a takeout. Pajo’s is a floating restaurant directly on the water, and while it’s slightly harder to get a seat, you can’t beat the view. They also have a location in picnic-worthy Garry Point Park, and all three of these restaurants offer fried salmon and chips, a local specialty.

LUCKY TAO CHINESE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT 8077 Alexandra Road, Richmond BC | 604.233.1219 EXPERIENCE: KING CRAB The annual King Crab season is a short one, and while it’s on, Richmond is certainly the place to be. There are over a dozen restaurants known for their preparation of King Crab, and I enjoyed my first-ever feast this year at Lucky Tao on Alexandra Road. The crabs are brought to the table before they’re cooked, then for several hours you’ll dine on every last part of the giant crustacean, each prepared in various ways (hello garlic butter!). Be sure to make a reservation, bring a crowd, perhaps wear stretchy pants, and get ready to partake in this beloved annual tradition.

5

HAROO KOREAN HOMESTYLE CUISINE 2000 - 8580 Alexandra Road, Richmond BC | 604.284.5596 EXPERIENCE: KOREAN FOOD If you’re not looking for it, Haroo is a place you could easily miss. It’s located on the second floor of an Alexandra Road building, and once you’ve made it up there, you’ll feel as though you’re home. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife team; it’s quaint, cozy, and serves food both extraordinary in flavour and presentation. Go with a group and try everything on the menu, or pop in by yourself for a bowl of their bibimbap, a traditional Korean rice dish served with plenty of banchan (side dishes).

JAGUAR MAN: COWELL’S JAMES HER STORY BY MATT SINCLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES HERZOG & GERALD RATH

T

HE OLD MARK 2 SAT FORGOTTEN in the corner of the lot. Yet this classic ‘65 Jaguar sedan still bore the majesty of the day it was minted. And to a fourteenyear-old James Herzog, it was the most beautiful thing in the world. If only he could, one day, drive a car like that. Little did he know how far his romance would lead.

FOCUS | 2013

Gripped by that winter’s customary Winnipeg freeze, the Herzogs’ summer landscaping business underwent its yearly transformation to plowing snow from driveways and parking lots. One day the local auto dealer called for service. James’s ears perked up. This lot housed the neglected Jaguar MK2. His father looked at the work order, not sure how to break the news to his son. “They told us just to just dump the snow on that old Jag,” he said gently. James’s face fell. He had to save that car.

32

Asking its price James discovered that, lacking a transmission, the car was actually affordable. He bought it, and for two years painstakingly sourced missing parts, so when he turned sixteen, James had already built his first car. From there, “it was a continual drive to make it better cosmetically and mechanically,” he reflects. “My love affair with Jaguar was born.” Inspiring a friend to buy a Jag too, James cared for both vehicles. This sparked further inspiration, and when he was twenty James started an automobile restoration company. Specializing in Jaguars, they handled other classic British marques like Austin Healey, Rolls Royce and Bentley. James was soon deep in Winnipeg’s auto scene.

The youngest of five, and only boy, James “developed a love of mechanical things at an early age,” he says. Growing up amongst Convincing his father to keep the Jag from an a playground of machinery in his parents’ icy burial, James soon realized that one way landscape business, “I was able to indulge or another, his car’s days were numbered. myself, learning to drive tractors and trucks.”

James built his restoration business to a sterling success, but after twenty-one years he felt stirrings. “I realized I was at a point in my life. I needed to make a big change.” It was 2006. Selling the business, he soon found himself involved in a long distance romance with someone on the coast and, two years later, he moved west.

...When he turned sixteen, James had already built his first car. The change suited him in more ways than one. In Winnipeg, “most people put their ‘nice’ cars away for the winter and have a winter car to sacrifice to the salt,” he jokes. “I went through withdrawal when I had to put my Jaguar away.” No longer did James need to deprive himself for five months of the year. Making a casual inquiry at Jaguar Richmond, James’s passion, commitment, and formidable skill set were quickly recognized. He was hired immediately. James now diagnoses customer concerns regarding their vehicles, and performs the maintenance required to keep these complex machines running precisely. With a degree of automotive knowledge reserved for the truly obsessed, and the wisdom that comes from decades of hands-on trial and error, James sees deep into the vehicles he works on. “One of the best ways to learn how something is built is to take one apart,” he explains, “down to every last nut and bolt.” His professional life has brought some very personal highlights, like traveling to the UK to see Jaguar’s original factory in Browns Lane, Coventry. But the towering moment came in 2011, when James was

instrumental in presenting the brand new XJ at Jaguar Richmond. Capitalizing on his extensive auto community connections, James produced a permutation of every XJ since its inception in 1969. There, lined up from start to finish, was the entire story of this famous car. “The turnout was great,” he states proudly. “People could really see the evolution of the XJ model through the years.” Scanning Jaguar’s history in his memory, James bursts with accolades, such as “building a double overhead camshaft engine that at the time was very exotic, and putting it into a vehicle that was relatively affordable.” He follows that with their creation of “the first disc-braked production car,” and “the ‘invention’ of the sports sedan.” BMW may claim this distinction, but as James says, “Jaguar was there 20 years earlier.”

One of the best ways to learn how something is built is to take one apart down to every last nut and bolt. James is especially enthusiastic about the current state of his favourite marque, excited to see “our parent company, Tata Motors, investing heavily in new plants, research and development.” He is not alone in praising Tata who, since acquiring Jaguar from a troubled scenario under Ford in 2008, have since returned it to rich distinction. Just as James labored to restore his much loved MK2 all those years ago, so too is Tata fostering a renaissance for the entire Jaguar line.

FOCUS | 2013

With record sales, and global design awards for their brand new F-Type, “all indications show that we are well on our way to recapturing the unique ‘Jaguarness’ again,” says James. But just what, precisely, is that special quality?

34

Jaguars, “are such a unique combination of elegance, agility, and beauty,” he describes. But to truly express how he feels, James turns to words he heard years before on vacation. “I was speaking with some local people, and when I told them I worked on Jaguars someone said, ‘I don't know anything about cars. But I always know when I see a Jaguar.’” We share these sentiments. As with any great passion, its essence can’t be put into words.

2014 JAGUAR F-TYPE BY TREVOR HOFMANN, CANADIAN AUTO PRESS

The F-Type is the first two-seat sports car Jaguar has introduced since the 1961 E-Type, and after a single glance you’ll be wondering what took them so long. It’s downright gorgeous! The lines don’t mess with sports car tradition. A long power bulged front-hinged clamshell hood, muscular fenders, short tapered rear deck: all classic Jaguar. Frontal styling doesn’t attempt to conjure the spirit of XKE, but more effectively captures Jaguar’s modern brand identity in a most pleasing way, whereas its narrow blade-like taillights are amongst the prettiest in autodom. Front to back, the F-Type is a glorious objet d'art. Strong, intense,

virile, yet pretty, elegant, sensual. It’s small by today’s standards, yet the F-Type’s wheelbase is long enough for stability at all speeds. Lightweight aluminum construction makes the most of a double wishbone front/ rear suspension, and its alluring powertrain lineup. A trio of engines starts with a supercharged 340-hp 3.0L V6 with 332 lb-ft of torque that’s good for 5.3 seconds to 100km/h. A 5.0L V8 is available too, making 380-hp and 339 lb-ft of torque for 4.9 seconds to 100km/h. Lastly, the supercharged F-Type V8 S produces 495-hp and 460 lb-ft of torque for a 4.2-second blast to 100km/h. An eight-speed

THE LONDON HERITAGE FARM: RICHMOND'S HIDDEN JEWEL STORY BY VICTORIA HANSEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY VICTORIA HANSEN

T

hese days, when our lives seem so rushed and time seems to fly by at alarming rates, it’s good to find a refuge that offers some sanctuary from our hectic pace. The London Heritage Farm in Richmond provides such a retreat, connecting us to a time long ago when things were much slower and nature governed our calendars. The Farm, which is owned by the City of Richmond and operated by the London Heritage Farm Society, showcases a way of life from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Established in the 1880’s, the original 200 acres has been reduced to a little over four, but the beautiful setting on Dyke Road overlooking the Fraser River preserves the feeling of another era, with a restored Farmhouse and extensive heritage gardens.

Life in the early days of the Farmhouse was hard and isolation was undoubtedly a major difficulty.

FOCUS | 2013

A charming introduction to the Farm is the special London Tea, served in the Tea Room, formerly the dining room of the old Farmhouse. It’s a simple yet elegant Tea, with warm scones and jam and a selection of three home-baked goodies, all made in the Farmhouse kitchen. The signature tea, London Lady Tea, is a unique mixture of black teas blended especially for the Farm. All is presented on pretty bone china and silverware at tables overlooking the colourful heritage gardens. The room is also home to a number of historical photographs, and they evoke a wonderful sense of how it felt to live in this house so long ago.

38

Back in 1877, six years before British Columbia was to join the Canadian Confederation, and at a time when Vancouver was still the little settlement of Granville, two teenage brothers, Charles and William London, arrived from Ontario. Shortly thereafter, they purchased 200 acres of land for about ten dollars an acre, built a small house and began the arduous tasks of clearing and draining their new property in preparation for farming. It

was not until 1888, however, when Charles married Henrietta Dalziel, a Scottish bride, that the present Farmhouse was begun. It was to take ten years to complete.

During the 1890’s, the front or southern part of the house was added. It must have been quite an undertaking, as it doubled the size of the building and gave not only a lot more room to its occupants, but also a feeling of elegance with its handsome staircase and spacious front parlor. The dining room doubled on Sundays as a sort of church, providing the community with a meeting place for religious services. The London family also began a general store and post office, and built a pier, London Landing, on the Fraser from which to ship their farm produce eastward to New Westminster.

The first part of the house to be built was the northern section, now the back part of the present structure, the section that currently houses the Gift Shop and kitchen on the ground floor, and children’s bedrooms and play area upstairs. The small size of the rooms, and indeed of the house itself at this stage, are a reminder of the primarily functional aspect of the structure, and demonstrates how, by necessity, the inhabitants lived in very close quarters. Charles and Henrietta raised five children on

They farmed and raised their own family there until 1948. Thereafter, the Farmhouse had a series of owners and rental families, and fell into severe disrepair in the ensuing decades. For several years, before the City of Richmond purchased the property in 1978, the London Heritage Farm Society worked in conjunction with the City to save it, and was rewarded by the registration of the house and farm as a heritage site under the BC Heritage Act. They were then able to restore the Farmhouse and now administer the property. Although they continue to work closely with the City, they are an independent body. Mary Lou Schootman is the Society’s current Administrator. She’s also a wonderful source of information about this historical jewel. She acknowledges that life in the early days of the

Here is a perfect setting to enjoy the simple pleasures of nature's beauty. Farmhouse was hard and that isolation was undoubtedly a major difficulty that the young family faced. But there were many rewards, not least of which was a close connection to the land, to “how things grow and where they come from.” One of the functions of the Farm today is its role in teaching just those things, especially to visiting school groups, a fact that obviously delights Mary Lou. Throughout the year, students tour the Farm in guided groups, and learn about farm life in the early 20th Century. Other group tours can be arranged, and all include the period rooms of the Farmhouse Museum as well as the allotment gardens, the bee hives, pond, and hand-tool museum in the barn.

There are many events on the Farm’s calendar throughout the year, not least of which are the Christmas festivities, beginning in mid-November when the Farmhouse is beautifully decorated inside and out and seasonal goodies are on offer in the Tea Room and Gift Shop. 2014 RANGE ROVER SPORT BY TREVOR HOFMANN, CANADIAN AUTO PRESS

That shapely sheetmetal is actually the world’s first application of aluminum unibody construction in an SUV. A new high-strength alloy plus high-tech adhesives and riveting techniques result in 360+kilos of weight loss. The Sport was already very quick, but thanks to its new lightweight body it can sprint to 100km/h in only 7.2 seconds via a new supercharged 3.0L V6 capable of 340-hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The

new engine allows for much better fuel economy too, at a claimed 12.4 L/100km combined. Those that want more can opt for a 5.0L V8 good for 510-hp and 461 lb-ft of torque and 5.3 seconds to 100km/h. An eight-speed automatic mates to either engine, capable of sporty 200-millisecond gear changes via steering wheel-mounted paddles.

even better traction. Additionally, the upgraded 4x4 gets torque vectoring for improved on-road handling. While the new Sport’s beautifully detailed cabin and bevy of electronic convenience and safety gear might initially wow you, its new 5+2 passenger configuration will be even bigger news to growing families who need seating for seven.

GENUINE ACCOMPLISHMENTS STORY BY KARI KYLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY AUSTIN KAY

I

t’s Thursday afternoon, and I prepare to interview real estate gurus and married couple, Austin Kay and Anita Chan. I consider options as to the theme of the article – will it be about their positive attitude, their cutting-edge use of technology to market themselves, or their work ethic? Having never met them before, I am curious as to who they are, and what has made them the top-selling realtors in Richmond? I dial Austin’s cell number and he picks up on the second ring. I immediately hear the professionalism in Austin’s voice, and the upbeat enthusiasm in Anita’s. They are warm, open and ready for the task at hand. I very quickly begin to understand what the secret is to Austin and Anita's achievements - but more on that in a bit.

Austin has lived in the Lower Mainland since he was five. He attended Vancouver Technical High School in Vancouver before heading to the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) to study Business Administration. Soon after graduation from BCIT, he started in real estate. “I had a friend who was in the business, and he convinced me that I would be good at it,” explained Austin. “In 1993, I started with NRS Block Bros., and I have enjoyed growing my real estate company in Richmond ever since.”

Anita was born and raised in Vancouver, and like Austin, she also attended BCIT where she obtained diplomas in Operations and Financial Management. She received her BA from Lakehead University in Ontario, and landed her first

Sporty is also how one might describe her current vehicle, an Orkney Grey Range Rover from Land Rover of Richmond. “The Range Rover drives like a sports car,” states Anita. “I am excited to finally see the newly redesigned 2014 Range Rover Sport. Apparently there is a third row seat option that would be great for our family.”

After chatting with Austin and Anita, I have learned a lot about who they are, and what has made them successful. As I predicted, they are forward-thinking in their use of technology, and they have a top-notch accounting process. They are organized, energetic, positive, and they put their hearts into helping their clients. Even more so, there is something else that
