NEWSLETTER Friday 10th January 2020

Dear Parents and Carers, A very Happy New Year and I hope you had a wonderful break. It has been lovely to welcome back our students this week and to see them full of energy and enthusiasm for their learning and the term ahead. Congratulations to Year 13 students who are focusing hard on their learning. This approach has certainly paid off and our Year 13 students are starting 2020 with exciting university offers across a broad range of subjects including medicine and biomedicine, engineering, computer science, music technology and economics. We have a strong programme of support for UCAS applications here and it is great to hear of these successes. Today, we have held our mock exam results day for Year 11 students. They received their recent mock results in envelopes just as they will do in August. Students now have a clear picture of where to prioritise their next set of efforts and need to keep the revision up. We also now expect all Year 11s to have 100% attendance. Last year, Year 11 students with 95+% attendance achieved, on average, the best results in the year by a considerable amount so attendance can be clearly seen to be central to success. We are all here to support your children if their results are a little way off what they are aiming for; hard work and determination over the coming months will still be able to make a huge difference moving forwards. My parent surgeries continue this term on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

Mental Health and Well-Being There will often be times when students will for whatever reason, not feel happy or themselves.

The academy is fully committed to ensuring that every child receives warmth and support where needed. All staff are trained in Mental Health and Wellbeing of Young people and key front line staff are also trained to a higher level, certified in Mental Health First Aid and further qualifications to deliver bespoke interventions of support where needed – ELSA is one such example. This is to ensure that all of our young people are able to access appropriate emotional support alongside their academic studies with us. In addition to having a personal tutor and heads of year/mentors, we can offer a range of interventions for our young people. These are often delivered by our Inclusion Intervention Lead – Ms Cooke. If you would like to know more about what we can offer for your child, please do contact the academy to find out more. As part of our continued drive for ensuring positive Mental Health and Wellbeing, the academy is being supported in applying for the Optimus Education Quality Assurance Mark – The Well-being Award and are also committed to being a part of the Isle of Wight Youth Trust Mental Health Charter.

Enrichment can be a key area where students can access a more informal curriculum in order to boost well-being in some cases. We encourage our young people to take advantage of the clubs the academy has on offer as much as possible and are always keen to hear if there are some enrichment opportunities the students would like to see that we may not currently offer. Our current Key Stage 3 Charters are a good way for students to take advantage of further enrichment opportunities at the academy. Current Year 7 parents and students were introduced to their charter from the Transition days and further information about the new Year 8 Charter will be coming to you via next week’s newsletter. If you would like further information regarding clubs and extra-curricular opportunities at the academy, please contact us.
