NEWSLETTER www.cowesec.org info@cowesec.org

Friday 10th May

Dear parents and carers, It’s only been a short week this week, but we’ve still managed to live it to the full! It has been wonderful to see so many students involved in our wide range of enrichment clubs and activities. Enrichment sits at the heart of the academy and our students regularly show commitment and passion for their clubs. Do have a look at the list of clubs on offer in the newsletter to check what your child could be getting involved with! Our main focus this week has been to support our Year 11 students, many of whom have now begun their GCSEs in earnest. Congratulations to students of Languages who have taken their oral exams this week. I have heard very positive feedback on how these have gone. In addition our large cohort of Art students have now completed their GCSE, which has culminated this week in the very intensive 2 day Art practical exam. I know that work produced has been both skilled and inspiring. The first written GCSE examinations start on Monday next week. We know how hard the Year 11 students have been working in preparation for these important exams and we wish them every success. I am delighted to let you know that our 3G pitch work continues to be on track for a move back to the Winder Centre for exams from Monday 20th May as previously indicated we hoped would be the case. I would like to share that I regularly receive praise from members of the community, via phone calls, emails and telephone calls, regarding how our students conduct themselves in the community when they are wearing our uniform. I hear almost on a weekly basis how students are thoughtful, kind, well presented and extremely courteous, often giving up seats on buses and offering assistance where required. Members of the local community tell me that we can feel proud of our student community. I continue to enjoy my parent surgeries as I feel strongly that meeting parents and hearing your thoughts is essential. This term my parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

ATTENDANCE #AttendanceMatters.

Current academy attendance is 94.9%. Thank you to all parents and carers for supporting us to support your child in achieving their best.

Parents should telephone the academy on 01983 203103 and select Option 1 before 8.30am on each day of absence, informing of the reason of absence and when their child will be returning to the academy, leaving a message on the voicemail. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Parents are required to send a letter of explanation of absence when their child returns to school. This should be handed into reception. This letter should detail the duration and reason for absence.

SAFEGUARDING We have had some great feedback on the new app ‘Hollyguard’. This app helps add some peace of mind and protection whilst out and about. It is the app that can help keep you safe. The HollyGuard website states: ‘In danger? A simple shake or tap activates Hollie Guard, automatically sending your location and audio/video evidence to your designated contacts.’ For further information, please access the website: https:// hollieguard.com/ Mental Health Awareness Week Next week is Mental Health Awareness week. As part of the academy’s ongoing work making Mental Health support and education a priority, the students will be sensitively focusing their pastoral times on the themes of mental health, ‘body image’ and accepting and celebrating how we think and feel about our bodies. The academy will be posting throughout next week some examples of the work the students do.

YEAR 9 CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Here are some of the characters the Year 9 creative media students have been creating for their technical skills workshops. Next week they are designing sets and scenes to showcase their film ideas. This is a very practical course and students have really got engaged with it. We can’t wait to see their films at end!

the

There is a planning session on Tuesday 14th May. This session will go onto until 5pm. All participants must attend as this is the planning session for their assessed expedition in July. Each students needs to bring the following cash with them for the expedition weekend in July: Camp site fee - £5 Assessor fee – £3.75

We had been hoping to assess our own groups but D of E have said external assessors are required for the assessed expedition. Students should have their physical, skill and volunteering sections signed off on eDofE before their expedition dates.

Please email jgibson@cowesec.org if you have any queries about this.

3G PITCH UPDATE It is very exciting to see the progress of our 3G pitch!

Larger images and previous updates can be viewed on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

STUDY LEAVE Until Friday 7th June Year 11 students will be expected to attend their normal timetable for all subjects until the final exam and/or coursework and assessments are completed and handed in. Where a subject is fully completed before Friday 9th June students are expected to attend normal lessons in this subject where supervised revision/work will be carried out for other forthcoming exams. From Monday 10th June Year 11 students are expected to attend timetabled lessons for those subjects that they are yet to complete their exams in. Students will also be expected to attend the extra timetabled revision sessions prior to some exams. They are, however, permitted to continue with ‘independent studies’ at home for subjects where all exams for the subject have been fully completed. If a student wishes to complete ‘independent study’ in college, arrangements for this will be made.

We would like to wish all of our students the very best of luck in their forthcoming exams.

SCIENCE REVISION SESSIONS Unless otherwise states, sessions will be on Wednesdays from 3pm
