Friday 15th March

Dear parents and carers, This week I have an important and very exciting announcement to make regarding our already excellent and cutting edge facilities here at Cowes Enterprise College. I am thrilled to let you know that work starts today on a state-of-the-art £1m 3G football pitch at Cowes Enterprise College which will be the first on the Island. The full-size floodlit pitch won planning approval from the Isle of Wight Council and work is now underway. It should be complete and ready for use for the start of the new academic year in September, available for use by our pupils during the day and then for community use in the evenings and at weekends. Funding for the pitch has been provided by the Isle of Wight Council and by the Football Foundation. We are so excited that work is underway on what will be an amazing facility when complete. It’s the latest step in Cowes Enterprise College’s ongoing success story but I am also delighted that this will be a facility that the whole community will be able to take advantage of. We are a school that is incredibly proud to serve its community and we really do want everyone to make use of what is the first 3G pitch on the island. Thank you also to all Year 7 parents who attended parents’ evening this week; I hope that this was a positive and informative evening for you and your child and thank parents for their positive feedback on the evening. My parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

SAFEGUARDING We were really fortunate to welcome a visitor to the Academy today - Mr Omar Sharif. Mr Sharif is a Prince’s Trust Young Achiever and Pride of Britain Award winner. With thanks to our local Police, we were able to be a part of an awe-inspiring presentation from Mr Sharif for our Year 10 students in a special assembly about how young people can be the change they want Omar Sharif and Mrs J Harding to see in the world. Mr Sharif talked about his experiences after ‘becoming involved in the gang culture he lost three friends to knife crime and watched others be imprisoned, and realised that he needed to change.’ Mr Sharif described his experiences and spoke to our students about: “Growing up in an area of London where gun and knife crime were a way of life, Omar became involved in a gang when he was 16 years old. But when three of his friends died as a result of knife crime, it was a horrifying wake-up call and Omar knew things needed to change. And now, with help from The Prince’s Trust, he has turned his life around to help deter other youngsters from following the same destructive path.” Mr Sharif concluded his presentation with a story about a 5 year old child who wanted some of her Daddy’s time in an evening. He described how the girl’s Daddy gave her a map of the world and ripped it into pieces, telling her that if she could put it back together correctly, she would be able to have anything she wanted from him that evening. The girl did put the map back together and her Daddy was so amazed at how his 5 year old daughter could’ve done this, he wanted to know how she had. The girl turned the pieced together map over and on the back was a picture of a person. The girl said: “Daddy, I knew that is I put the person together right, I could fix the world.” This was such a poignant story that left the academy in such thoughtful reflection and we shall be continuing Mr Sahrif’s theme of the ability of one person to make a change throughout our curriculum. Further information regarding Mr Sahrif can be accessed here: https://www.prideofbritain.com/component/k2/omar-sharif

ATTENDANCE #AttendanceMatters.

Thank you to all parents and carers regarding the feedback on our attendance initiatives. The children love the attendance celebration breakfasts that run half termly to celebrate high tutor group attendance and are enjoying the recognition their attendance at school brings in assemblies too. As part of our holistic attendance educative approach, it’s great to hear that our weekly social media blasts reminding everyone about the importance of attendance helps to keep the subject of attendance at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Just as a reminder – these texts and social media blasts are sent to everyone, regardless of the child’s attendance figure. The texts aim to place attendance expectations high on parents’ radars, as attendance and punctuality are e s s e nt i a l for progress at school. We have screened our data and found that students with high attendance and punctuality achieve significantly higher progress than students with lower attendance and that there is a tangible link between attendance and success at our academy. We are therefore keen to keep attendance high on our communication agenda as we are determined to do our very best for every student in the academy in all ways. We are really pleased to see that since introducing our attendance initiative students’ attendance to the academy has notably improved. Thank you to all parents/carers for your support in supporting us to achieve the best possible outcomes for your child.

We will also be holding a bake sale during break time. #LeaveNoOneBehind

MISSING LIBRARY BOOKS We have a large number of library books which are overdue, or which have simply gone missing from our bookshelves. As you can imagine, this is incredibly frustrating for children wanting to read the books. Please could you search at home for any books belonging to the library, and encourage your children to return them as soon as possible? Please rest assured that students will not be in any trouble returning long overdue or lost books. Mrs Bowen would be very grateful to get them back.
