Friday 16th November

Dear parents and carers, With only 5 weeks to go until the Christmas break, there is a lot to take note of at CEC. Please be sure to read the ‘Upcoming Academy Dates’ section of the newsletter and to commit events to your diary! Year 11and 13 have their mocks fast approaching, starting on Monday 10th December, with a small number of exams beginning earlier, and finish on Thursday 20th December. Year 11 students have received revision timetables and exam dates this week and we wish them well with this very busy period of revision. Our annual school play this year is Arabian Nights and our performances take place from the 18th – 20th December. Our students have been rehearsing with great enthusiasm and it is set to be a terrific run of evenings. We would also love to share our carol service with you; this takes place at St Mary’s Church, Northwood at 6.30pm on Monday 17th December. Over the next few weeks we also have Oxbridge mock interviews, Year 10 parents’ evening, our Christmas Fayre and the whole of Year 7 watching a pantomime in Year 7. Term ends on Friday 21 st December at 12.10pm. Thank you to all parents who attended Year 9 parents’ evening, which was very successful. I was attending the Ormiston Academies Trust annual conference this week and so wasn’t able to attend this parents’ evening as I usually do. I am delighted to share that Cowes Enterprise College received a coveted award for having the highest GCSE exam results in the whole trust for Grade 4-9 passes in English and Maths. I continue to offer parent surgery time over the next half term and really enjoy meeting parents in these sessions. A reminder that I hold them twice weekly on a Tuesday afternoon from 1pm – 2.30pm and from 3.30pm – 5.30pm to enable parents to get to know me and discuss the work of the school with me directly. Attendance is by pre-booked appointments only. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book in a slot in advance of each Tuesday. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

Safeguarding A huge week supporting Anti-bullying week this week at the academy!

Anti bullying week The academy supported anti-bullying week this week and there are so many excellent things to report on! Odd Sock Monday was a success lots of students talked about odd socks and understanding the fact we were wearing them to represent how we should, as a community, be celebrating even the smallest of differences about each other. The students have been involved in lots of education this week surround the theme of bullying and #choose respect – the national theme for the week this year. Students had assemblies on the key themes of respect and what constitute bullying and what the systems are in place at the academy to enable our continued swift action on things if they occur. Students report that: ‘Bullying is rare but if it does happen, staff deal with it quickly and effectively.’ Work during this week has also focused on our academy Policy in Practice review cycles, where we ensure that we involve students to feed into key academy policies so we can ensure that we are keeping our policies, live, relevant and that they continue to be effective in what they are meant to be doing. The Anti-bullying policy review has started this week as planned. Thank you to all students who have so far been involved in the process.

Wall of Respect! #choose respect.

Next week, our CEC ‘Wall of Respect will be up and running – thank you to all students who have sent through their offerings in line with the tutor programme. Students were asked to # phrases of respect that we, as a community, should living by. Next week will focus a celebration of this.

SSSAs! Senior Student Safeguarding Ambassadors Our new Senior Student Safeguarding Ambassadors (6th form) were appointed this week. They will be following a Yearlong ambassador programme to work with younger students and the Safeguarding Team. Their role mainly, after accredited training, is to be a source of support to younger students in issues such as friendship, work, online etc.

Reminder Please can parents, when dropping off, be extra mindful of appropriate speeds and of students crossing from the bike sheds to the main reception.

This reindeer needs a name! You will have the opportunity to give this reindeer a name at our Christmas Fayre. All are welcome!

Year 7 have raised £110 for BBC Children in Need through their Bake Sale and Duck Race fund raising. All cakes sold out within the first 10 minutes of break time! Well done and thank you to the following students for their help selling the cakes:

On Saturday 3rd and 10th November, members of Cowes College CCF took to the streets of Cowes in order to raise funds for the Royal British Legion by selling poppies. A total of £700 was raised by the unit. On Thursday 8th November, 12 Cadets from the unit attended the opening of the Field of Remembrance at Carisbrooke Castle by HM Lord-Lieutenant Major General Sir Martin White. On Friday 9th November, Cowes Enterprise College’s Annual Whole College Act of Remembrance service took place. As it was the Centenary of the First World War, Tutor groups researched the names of the 147 service personnel who lost their lives and are remembered on the Cowes War Memorial in Northwood Park. Special thanks to the sixth formers, and Year 7 students who were involved in the drumming and the playing of the Last post and Reveille. Thanks also goes to the members of the choir on the singing of the song Gassed last night. On Sunday 11th November the cadets took part in the Cowes Remembrance Parade and Church service at St Mary’s Church in Northwood Park. The College’s Remembrance box was used in the Church to represent the 147 names along with a candle for each person being lit.

Miss Wisniowski and Miss Crane’s Year 7 SRS groups have done some fantastic work this week for anti-bullying week! Well done everyone!

The deadline for payments is fast approaching. Please ensure your balance is paid by 10th December. There is a parents meeting on Wednesday 16th January at 7pm.

Reminder for all year 11 Geographers The fieldtrips are next week. 11C – Monday 11A – Tuesday 11B – Thursday. We will leave school at 10.45 on these days and will be returning on the 15.45 Red Jet so students will be dismissed or collected from West Cowes Red Jet terminal at 16.15. Students will need to dress appropriately (nonschool uniform) and make sure that they have clothing to suit the weather conditions as we are outside for the day (it looks like being cold and possibly wet). Students may bring packed lunch or have some time to get some lunch in West Quay. Please remember to bring the £5 needed for the boat ticket on the day. Any questions or concerns then please email kwiltshire@cowesec.org

There is no direct number for the absence line. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Mrs Wiltshire has shared a list of the groups in lessons and also has one posted outside ET03 if you need a reminder. Thank you to everyone who came this week, and we look forward to the sessions next week focusing on Paper 1 tricky topics. - Mrs Wiltshire, Mrs Eriksson and Miss Wisniowski

REMINDERS & INFORMATION December Mocks-Year 11 and Year 13 The December mocks for Year 11 and Year 13 start on Thursday 6th December and will end on Thursday 20th December. All students with mock exams will receive an Individual Candidate Timetable which will show the date, time, exam room and seat number for each of their exams. These timetables will be given our during tutor time next week. There will also be seating plans on the examination notice board in the MIZ each day showing both the morning and afternoon exams. If you have any queries regarding the mock exams please contact our Exams Officer Mrs Hambley at ahambley@cowesec.org

Library books We have a large number of library books, which have simply gone missing from the library shelves – or which have been on loan for a long time. Many children have been frustrated to find that one book from a series is missing. Please could you have a thorough search at home for any books belonging to the college, and encourage your children to return them to the library? Mrs Bowen will never be angry at children returning lost books - just grateful to get them back.

Thank you for your help.
