Friday 17th May

Dear parents and carers, With Cowes Enterprise College’s written exam series now well underway, we are really impressed with how the Year 11 students are coping! This is where our programme of support, intervention and revision timetables are so important, as they have helped our students to develop independent revision and confident study skills while providing excellent continued classroom support in areas where students have needed additional help. Our programme is bespoke for students so that every student is able to access the most appropriate programme for them. I am delighted to let you know that we have had great success for our Year 12 students who are gaining places at university summer schools for this summer. The summer school places we have so far been successful in cover a range of subjects including Medicine, Law, Politics, Computer Science and Life Sciences. These places are at prestigious summer schools at Imperial College London, University College London, The University of Bristol and Southampton University. Students have had to apply for places and have been successful in competitive processes. Well done to Charlie, Amie, Amelia, Ben, Emilia and Treeve! We are currently supporting our potential medical students in Year 12 in beginning their UCAS applications and looking forward to starting this work with the rest of the year too – exciting times ahead for our sixth formers. I continue to enjoy my parent surgeries as meeting parents and hearing your thoughts is key for me. This term my parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

WELLBEING

SAFEGUARDING Dya kno text spk?... Do you let your child play age restricted games?....

The academy has been working hard on Mental Health Awareness week this week and have been producing lots of ideas about how we can all look after ourselves.

Do you know what computer and internet safety controls are available?... Do you know the signs of grooming?... Can you identify risky behaviour?...

Below sums up some of the things we have been looking at.

If you answered no (or even yes) to any of the above, come and find out much more at the LSCB’s FREE information session on Keeping Children Safe Online. Their first event this year is on Tuesday 2nd July, 6pm, Ryde School with Upper Chine. Poster attached. All welcome – parents, carers, professionals, family members, you name it. It’s FREE but they do ask you to book a space here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/keepingchildren-safe-online-02072019-tickets61986865383

STUDY LEAVE Until Friday 7th June Year 11 students will be expected to attend their normal timetable for all subjects until the final exam and/or coursework and assessments are completed and handed in. Where a subject is fully completed before Friday 7th June students are expected to attend normal lessons in this subject where supervised revision/work will be carried out for other forthcoming exams. From Monday 10th June Year 11 students are expected to attend timetabled lessons for those subjects that they are yet to complete their exams in. Students will also be expected to attend the extra timetabled revision sessions prior to some exams. They are, however, permitted to continue with ‘independent studies’ at home for subjects where all exams for the subject have been fully completed. If a student wishes to complete ‘independent study’ in college, arrangements for this will be made. We would like to wish all of our students the very best of luck in their forthcoming exams.

SAFEGUARDING AROUND KEEPING HEALTHY DURING EXAMS So, that it then. Almost the end of another year and exams for Y11s and Y13s. Exam time is upon us and what is for many young people a stressful time. We have drawn together some of the key links available, covering a wide-range of tips to keep mentally healthy. It is easy to forget that for many parents, it is the first time their children have had exams, and teachers need to give them the heads-up too.

NOTICES FROM SCHOOL TRANSPORT

CHANGES TO HOME TO SCHOOL CONTRACTED BUS SERVICES – SEPTEMBER 2019 As an outcome of the recent agreed changes to the opening times of a number of island secondary schools, it has been necessary for the Isle of Wight Council to make significant amendments to the network of contracted home to school bus services. Further to this, there has been a continual reduction in the number of students entitled to free home to school transport over the past few years. As a result, the service 306 will cease at the end of this academic year. However for the small number of students who are entitled to free home to school transport, who currently access the contracted service due to be cancelled, they will be provided with a bus pass to access public bus services or alternative provision where necessary. Please see below a brief overview of the amendments, full details of the revised services will be available on our webpages over the coming weeks www.iow.gov.uk/schoolbusroutes 304 – Freshwater, Totland, Yarmouth and Shalfleet

- A slight timing change to align with the new opening hours

306 – Newport and Northwood

- Service cancelled

The Transport Service will continue to offer the Privilege Seat Scheme for students who are not eligible for free home to school transport where spare capacity exists, further details of which shall be circulated soon. Should you have any queries or concerns regarding these changes please contact the Council’s Transport Service: transport.info@iow.gov.uk

PRIVILEGE SEAT APPLICATION WINDOW – ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/20

The dates for the privilege seat application window for academic year 2019 have been finalised. Should you wish to apply for a privilege seat for your child to use the school bus service you will need to apply between 9am on Monday 3rd June 2019 and 4pm on Friday 14th June 2019 for children in school years 0 – 11, only. You will not be able to apply for privilege seats for sixth form students (school years 12 – 14) at this time. Please note that the online form will only be live between the above times and that applications received outside of this window will not be accepted. Further information on the privilege seat process can be found online, here: https://www.iwight.com/Council/ OtherServices/School-Transport/Privilege-Seat-on-School-Transport. Please also note the FAQs, Code of Good Practice and Ticket Terms and Conditions sections available via this webpage. If you scroll to the bottom of the above webpage you will see the bus services for which you can apply. This information will be live from 9am on Monday 3rd June 2019. Should the service you require not be listed you will not be able to apply for that service at this time. Do bear in mind that making an application for a privilege seat does not guarantee a seat on the school bus. Privilege seat ticket prices are set costs as follows:  Up to a full term £130.00  Up to half a term £65.00  Up to a full term AM or PM only £65.00  Up to half a term AM or PM only £32.50 Should you have any queries please contact the Transport Team at the Council via email: transport.info@iow.gov.uk or telephone: 823780. Important Points to Note  Information on all bus services will be available on the website from 9am on Monday 3rd June 2019.  There will no longer be merged bus services to Carisbrooke and Christ the King Colleges due to the changes to start and finish times.  Some services to other schools will also change or be removed.  There will be a strict payment deadline for making payment. Should you miss this deadline, the seat offered to your child will be offered to the next child on the waiting list (should one exist) and your application will be cancelled.  Once applications have been processed by the Transport Team you will be  able to see the status of your application online as well as make payment without having to contact the Council.

GEOGRAPHY FIELDTRIP

It has been great to see brilliant work done during pastoral time for Mental Health Awareness Week! Students have been doing work around mental health, body image and celebrating how we think and feel about our bodies.

As part of this, tutor group 9JHG have shared their ideas of what they do when they are feeling anxious.

On Tuesday morning Mrs Wiltshire and Miss Wisniowski took the first group of year 10 geographers out for the coastal fieldwork trip in the lovely sunny weather! We walked down to the Cowes parade to assess various coastal management strategies and then along the coast to Gurnard where we stopped to gather data about sediment shape and size, and beach gradient at Cowes Beach and Gurnard Beach. The students were well behaved and worked really hard to gather data on these topics. With this data the students will be working on making judgements and presenting the data through radial diagrams and beach profiles. A special thank you to Mrs Sheppard and Mrs Hughes as this trip would not have been possible without their support! Mrs Wiltshire and Miss Wisniowski are looking forward to taking the two other year 10 groups out on Monday and Tuesday next week!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AMENDED NOTICE

3G PITCH UPDATE The contractors have been working hard to ensure the pitch is prepared for work to pause for the summer exam season. We will continue to post progress updates when work begins again.

Larger images and previous updates can be viewed on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

FOOTWEAR Use of the 3G pitch will require specific footwear. Only studded football boots (screw-in or moulded) should be worn on the pitch. It is important that the studs must be fitted correctly to the shoe sole and in a way that they cannot capture the turf fibres. All studs must be fully tightened and there must be no gap between the studs and the sole of the boot. All studs must be free of sharp edges, have a smooth and undamaged surface and totally free of sharp burrs. Flat soled trainers or ‘astro trainers’ should not be worn on the 3G pitch.

Launch of the 2020 MOD Education Support Fund (ESF) In light of the ongoing drawdown from Germany and to provide time for the educational authorities across the UK to bring in longer-term provision for Service children as necessary, the Secretary of State for Defence in July 2018 announced the extension of the ESF for an additional two years - £3 million in 2018/19 and £2 million in 2019/20. Out of 224 applications received, requesting just short of £10 million, the 2019 ESF awarded £3 million to 76 successful applicants with funding directly benefitting approx. 25,000 Service children across the UK. The bidding round for the 2020 ESF opens on Monday, 3 June 2019 and applicants have until 1200hrs on Monday 30 September 2019 to submit their application. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications from England, Scotland and Wales should be forwarded to: DCYP-MOD-ESF-Mailbox@mod.gov.uk. Hand written, incomplete and postal applications cannot be accepted. Directorate Children and Young People (DCYP), which is the MOD’s professional focal point for all matters relating to children and young people associated with the armed forces, are the lead organisation administering and supporting the fund.

The ESF is open to publicly funded schools, Academies and Free Schools in the UK attended by Service children, where schools have to mitigate the effects on those Service children whose parents are subject to frequent mobility/deployment. Applications from Local Authorities in support of these schools can also be accepted. The 2020 application pack, including the application form and full instructions and guidance, can be found at gov.uk: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mod-support-fund-for-schools-with-service-childrengrant-application-pack. For further queries please contact: DCYP-MOD-ESF-Mailbox@mod.gov.uk.

We are delighted to welcome Robin Price to our Local Governing Body as our Parent Governor. Robin has provided a statement on his appointment to the role of Parent Governor:

“My daughter, Georgie, is currently sitting her GCSEs at CEC, so I think it is a good time for me to step up and become a Parent Governor. I have over 30 years of business experience, which will allow me to support the school in managing its tight budget and in attracting good, enthusiastic teaching staff. The school is the best-performing school on the island and is becoming the most popular. An increase in students will bring opportunities, but also challenges. I want to contribute to improving the school’s ability to provide an inclusive and rounded education to all of its pupils and ensure that the children have the best opportunities available to them. As a Parent Governor I would see my role as making sure that the parent voice is heard and that the views of parents are taken fully into account in the school’s strategy and policies”

MOON CAMP CHALLENGE Four Cowes Enterprise College students took part in The Moon Camp Challenge; an educational and inspirational project run by ESA and Airbus Foundation, in partnership with Autodesk The challenge was taken up by over 850 pupils around the world, with 535 participants coming from 15 ESA Member States. Over the past few months students used ESA’s educational resources, Airbus Foundation’s animations and Autodesk 3D design tools to create their lunar camps, coming up with the most creative, innovative and suited-to-purpose designs.

A huge thank you to Shaun Cuff who gave up some of his time yesterday to come and chat to our incredibly talented and enthusiastic Graphic Design students in years 8, 9 & 10. The students have been left incredibly inspired and excited to start their next projects. We look forward to welcoming Shaun back during the next school year!

Huge congratulations to Ewan, Jamie, Shane and Asen for being the only British team in their age group to reach the finals for their Moon Base design. We are incredibly proud of your work.
